10K Runner, Couch to 10K Run for Negative User Reviews

OkThe plan and how it learns from your ratings after a run is good. What really let’s the app down is if, like me, you rely on a smart watch to track your runs as well. The communication between the app on the phone and the app on the watch. You can have two different runs going on each at the same time if you wanted. They SEEM to save your last run between the two but I’m not 100%. The watch app also misses out a lot of the features from the mobile version and calories burned is sketchy. There are free running apps available that have mastered these. For a subscription service this isn’t great. The app does is it’s job. But I wouldn’t hesitate to migrate to another if I was recommended one.Version: 8.540

Enjoying the free trial but…I am enjoying the free trial, however I am struggling to get the app on my Apple Watch to load and more so I am frustrated that the prices for subscription are way more expensive then what the App Store has listed..Version: 9.3610

GlitchyI just finished week four run two and it hasn’t saved previous runs and has just brought me back to week one day one. Very frustrating..Version: 9.3610

Was OK… but now it isn’tIf you read the reviews, you see everyone loves IT. But, that was 6 years ago and it is STILL the same app… except for the price. What was once a few $$ has increased their price for the app 275% in 6 months with no end in sight. Yep, you read that right. 10K runner has drunk the greed wine. Do yourself a favor and check out one of the other amazing (and free) running apps. Including: Nike Run Club (this app has all the features and seems to be interesting in keeping the technology updated…) Runna (Described as your personal running coach, if you are serious about your running and want to increase your speed and endurance, this is the best running app one the market.) Garmin Connect (If you have one of these watches, try the app. It is loaded with lots of great stuff, including plans and the ability to drill down into the data of your run… gathered through your watch… Imagine that 10K Runner, an app that actually works with your watch instead of being just a glorified TIMER for $20 every three months or a $40 purchase.) Lots of options to choose NOT to reward an app developer for their outright sucky greed and business “decisions”. Take your overhyped MBA and put it in your old stinky running shoes. You made a bad decision..Version: 9.3500

Premise is goodThe premise for this app is great, a couch to 5km for people who can already run a bit, and it does start you off later down the line based on information you give them. My issue is that the voice only tells you when to stop and start running, with no indication as to how long is left so if you want to be see how long is left on each section you have to get your phone out and open the app specifically which isn’t really doable when running. You can’t start speeding up/slowing down when there’s a minute left because you don’t know. It also doesn’t let you see the rest of the run once you’ve started it, so you can’t see how many sections you have left etc.Version: 9.2110

InconsistentThe training plan is well structured and will more than likely get you to your goal without injury. It challenges you but not too much which means you will probably stick to it and feel satisfied with the progress you make each week. The problem is that the app doesn't work consistently. Occasionally I get all the cues and it correctly records distance and calories. The rest of the time it's one or both of these: a verbal cue is missed (very annoying); it doesn't record distance and calories for the whole workout, only part of it. It's not the GPS on my phone (I have iPhone 6) as Apple Health is picking up the distance covered okay. I have all the settings correct. Support is not very good. They take ages to respond and then come up with something like 'Are you running outside?' Or 'Switch GPS on and off'. It has great potential but for me it is not working as intended. They seem to be developing loads of other apps that they are keen to sell you, but they would do well to sort this one out as a priority..Version: 7.3

Lifetime membershipGreat app to get you into running however I have now signed up for the lifetime access twice and still end up paying monthly..Version: 9.3400

Not What I Expected.I’m new to running. I ran several 5Ks before getting this app. My goal was to train for a 10K and improve my pace. My pace was not great when I started and it has not improved very much over the course of the program. I now have one more run with the app before it will award me with the coveted 10K Pro Runner Badge. Yeah!!! The problem is that the app is scheduling the last run for 60 minutes. At my current pace, it will take me 75-80 minutes to complete a full 10K. I don’t understand how or why I’m being presented with a meaningless badge. Voice cues. The app’s snarky Valley Girl comments and cues never change. The exact same comments at the same points for every run. Boring. The comments provide no guidance and offer very limited encouragement. No insight no motivation to make improvements. I run streaming music from my phone to my AirPods. If I start the app from my watch, the chimes and voice cues do not get transmitted to the AirPods. They use the watch speaker. So the watch app is a convenient way to start, pause and complete a run, it doesn’t check all of the boxes..Version: 8.510

Great outside on watch, poor indoorsGlitches out and doesn’t record correct information when used on Apple watch on a treadmill. I had to uninstall from the watch. I’m hoping it can work from phone alone while the watch records accurate info, but I’m not sure it will be effective.Version: 9.3110

First time useI am 61 and have just used this app for the first time as recommended by my daughter. It was really good and helpful to be told when to stop and start running and have short running sections to begin with. So many exercise apps are geared to younger people who are already relatively fit and not older people like me starting to exercise again after a long break and a lot of gained poundage! I did adapt it a bit and just walked faster when it said run. However I did manage a 1 minute run towards the end. I will update as I hopefully improve!.Version: 8.004

Expected better for the priceI like the program but the Apple Watch version is very buggy. Sometimes it can see the route I ran, sometimes not. Sometimes it says I had a heart rate, sometimes not. On today’s run it said my average heart rate was 58bpm! I used to be a frequent half marathoner so understand pace etc. But this app includes the distance of the warm up and cool down in the pace calculation but only the actual workout portion in terms of time. So it tells my Apple Health that I went at some lightening speed that I could never have done! Not worth the purchase price..Version: 8.400

Buggy App Betters AvailableRunning instructions aren’t clear and audio instructions for me were intermittent. Doesn’t have useful pointers like telling you to speed up or slow down. Doesn’t give progress via audio or an indication of distance you should travel. And it’s not optimised for latest iOS releases.Version: 7.510

Not bad but a little annoyingOk so it does do what it says, but: A)Why doesn’t it go on to the next run after completing run 1? I was a little annoyed to find out after my second run that i had basically done run 1 again. When I open the app it should go to my next workout not my last. B) i have Apple Watch, AirPods, and iPhone. The only notifications i get are a faint buzz on my wrist, i missed a walk round which was a little frustrating. There are slicker apps I’ve used in the past. I will continue to try this and make decision next week..Version: 8.004

Charged when selected trialGot charged right away when I clicked free 7 day trial..Version: 8.540

Read before purchaseAs a concept, great. In practice, frustrating with some fundamental flaws. I have been patient before reviewing. I am fourteen runs in. a) I do not believe the over-whelming number of 5 star reviews. Shortly after purchase I was presented with a rate this app screen. One could only select 5 stars in order to clear the screen. Nothing else would do. I had to terminate the app and restart in order not to immediately rate 5 stars. b) I do not have many apps on my iPhone. No contention. But the app fails to state start run, or start walk frequently. So much do that I have to time the plan looking at my watch instead of listening to the app. I frequently find that I have run or walked more than I should have because the app has not stated even though it is the only app running. So, I have to get the iPhone out and either try and rewind to start again or even terminate that run. c) There are other major issues with this app that make the whole experience frustrating. I am going to try and persevere but I am getting pretty cheesed off..Version: 7.510

Just mehThe training plans have potential and are paced well for meeting your goals. But the app will cut out during some intervals if it’s only on in the background. For example if you’re watching something while running on the treadmill, it’ll cue the first few intervals and then just not do anything so you don’t know when to stop or start. You actually have to stop and open the app and by then its out of sync to where you’re at. It’s annoying. I’d expect better for something you have to pay for 3months worth.Version: 9.010

I like this app EXCEPT...On two occasions now, the time elapse has been wildly inaccurate. I ran for well over a mile and a half and the app reported I had only completed 3 minutes of my run time. This can feel so debilitating when you’re trying so hard to meet the goals. It’s not the first time either. Also the forward, back and pause buttons are easily triggered and there’s no way to return to where you were before doing so. There’s also been a malfunction with the music option since I first got the app. Selecting an iTunes playlist causes the app to freeze. I have to close and restart every time. Now I control my music outside the app. Any help I can get with these issues will ups be great. I wonder if anyone else experiences these glitches..Version: 7.510

Sadly failed to record run effectivelyThe app failed to record my run effectively. Stopping 3 times half way through the run for no apparent reason. As I had purchased a for lifetime a lifetime there is no way to be refunded. I would like a full refund please!.Version: 9.010

GlitchesThe app in principle is great, but most of my runs there is a glitch where after the first or second walk sequence, the app does not alert you to run. I will look down and see that I was already supposed to have started the running segment but neither the chimes, nor the vocal instructions came on. I’ve been using the app for 4 weeks and it happens on three out of four runs. Given that the whole purpose is to tell you when to run and when to walk this is frustrating. It means I can’t put my phone in my running belt because I have to keep checking if it’s time to run yet. It only glitches once per workout, so once it happens once, I know I’m in the clear..Version: 8.411

Fundamentally flawedA distance run trainer that does not accurately record distance. I’ve been using this app through my Apple Watch Series 3 for 10 weeks. My most recent run fell slightly short of 10k in the time (170 metres to be precise) so I decided to try for the full distance through the Workout app yesterday, following the same route. You can imagine my dismay when I reached the same point in the route and still had at least 1500 metres remaining to run. I was completely bemused. Having gone back to read critical reviews I now think that- as others have said- this app tracks the distance you cover in the 10 minute wam-up and cool-down period, but doesn’t include this in your pace/time calculation. Basically it told me lies- that I was running at an well-above average pace and would be able to complete 10k in a ‘good’ time, which I actually can’t. Not only is it misleading, I think it could possibly be dangerous for some people’s health. Furthermore, the pathetic ‘coach instructions’ are nothing short of insulting, and it doesn’t provide splits. Steer clear..Version: 8.540

No interval vibrationI am extremely disappointed in this App! I was really excited to use it (had been meaning to for some time) with my Apple Watch using the interval feature that feeds your runs to Apple Health BUT there is NO VIBRATIONS function to indicate when the run or walk interval is over. Using this while running on your watch is beyond irritating…it is infuriating. I hate it when tech does not do what it is supposed to do! Even with my watch volume cranked, I need to continually look at the watch face. I have contacted support numerous times and no one replies. I had expected much more!.Version: 9.3500

Confusing controls and really annoying voice commandsI found this app one of the most confusing things to use. Everyone starts at the beginning of training for a 5K. For a 10K training app I was expecting to be able to skip the 5K section or at least have the start of the 10K training sign posted. Searching through every week to find a suitable starting point didn't give me the best first impression of the app. Once I was running it didn't get much better. The voice commands are not helpful. Telling me "You're almost there" twice during the same running period is pointless and frustrating. More useful would be letting me know the time left maybe or how long I'd been running. I also found the computer generated voice really irritating. How many different commands are there really? Could you not hire a voice actor for a day? Twice during a run it allowed me to accidentally reset my running time but didn't then allow me to move it back to where it was. Maybe an undo button would be helpful? I felt that it asked me for access to my location and music when I wasn't able to pay attention to the decision I was making (is mid-run really the best time to find out if you can access my music?). Giving the app access to my music was a mid-run decision I bitterly regretted. Maybe I'm unique here but when I end my work out I don't immediately want my music to stop. Ok app that needs work..Version: 7.3

So so as long as you don’t want to see your routeNice to have the watch app but not very good that although it shows you a small map on your watch at the end of your run that it doesn’t show you this map in the Apple Fitness summary or even on the 10K runner app itself??? What’s the point in tracking your distance if it can’t show you where you actually ran which would be so helpful to see... It did show my map once in Apple fitness but never again and when I asked “Support” I just got a generic reply of we are looking at this feature 😩.Version: 8.300

Not flexibleThis app would be fine if you are under 50 and in reasonable health to start. The progression is too fast and too long for those who run at a slower pace or need short intervals. No option to customize the intervals..Version: 8.400

Good but lacking feedbackI got this a few weeks ago and it does what it says on the tin, but these days, you expect more. Like many others, I keep my phone (with the app) in a zipped pocket at the back of my shorts. I am missing a lot of feed back as lets face it, I need this to keep going. The app does not give audio FB as to what the next section is going to be, so if I do not memorise in advance, I have no idea how long my next running section will be, walking or whatever, it would keep me more motivated and focused if I was told in advance of a section how long it would be, also, it would be great to have a count down during the run. Further, the motivational Q’s are boring and few and far between. Also, when I finish, I can see a map of my path in three colours, BUT, there is no way for me to know how much I actually run, it would be interesting to me if I ran for 30 minutes and there is a green line, I want to know how far I run, but there is no way to know that unless I do it manually by using the measurements on my Apple Watch. Finally, there is no support for Apple Watch which is a shame as much of the required FB could be shown on a matching app on the watch..Version: 8.230

Paid for this app years ago and can’t use it nowSeveral years ago, I outright paid for the 10K Runner app (before it became a subscription). I was always able to utilize the full 10K Runner program. Sometime over the last couple of years, it seems the app was updated and a subscription is now required to utilize the full program. I attempted to “restore purchases” from settings, but to no avail, I cannot have full access to the program. I can only access the first four days. I used to love this app but because I can’t even use it, I can’t help but give it one star. This is incredibly disappointing that I actually paid for this app years ago, and now (on the same Apple ID, the only one I’ve ever had), I can’t use it without paying for a subscription. What happened to grandfathering in folks who bought the app prior to the implementation of a subscription? Other fitness apps have moved to a subscription as well but didn’t make their users who purchased the app from the beginning pay for a subscription to access full features. Seems like the point of purchasing the app has been defeated. Wishing I’d never bought it..Version: 7.510

Not ideal for treadmill usersI am really enjoying the app and the plan is great; however as the app tracks your distance via gps I can’t track how far I have run on a treadmill. It’s a shame to look back through my run history and see tiny figures as the gps has just seen me stay in one place for the duration of each run. A really simple option to input a distance value for treadmill users at the end of each run would make the app unbeatable by others available..Version: 8.411

Really good app, could be more supportiveThe app is great how it breaks down the weeks and gradually builds you up to 10K. It has worked really well for me as someone who wants to race ahead and then feels disappointed when I tire myself out and haven’t hit my running goals straight away 🤣! I really like you can optimise the runs, this has been really helpful as at first I found the runs easy and wanted more of a challenge. I think what would make this app even better given it cost over £10 is changing the voice over support to be more relevant to your run. It says the same thing at the same point each run. My brain is then trained to know what point during the run you are at and for me that makes me go one of two ways, either power through or think OMG I have that much left to do! I would like more variety of support voiceover based on the run you are doing, maybe more during longer runs. Also tips for running would be nice, always good to have a refresher!.Version: 8.400

Good coaching, not accurate min/miThis app is ideal for anyone that wants to do exactly as the name says “couch to 10k” essentially, just be able finish it running non-stop. If you are hoping to improve your run or you care about your pace, try something else. It has absolutely helped me run further, longer and I was by no means a runner. When I saw that it tracked my run at 9:13/mi I was absolutely thrilled. It was unbelievable that I could do so well! …a little too unbelievable, so I decided to track the run (excluding warmup walk and cooldown walk) separately as an outdoor run in my apple watch. Results: couch to 10k avg 9:13/mi. Apple watch 10:47/mi. I thought the app was a bit off, but seeing the results was devastating. Over a minute’s difference might be negligible if you were doing other things like waiting for coffee, but for running times, that’s huge. Overall it’s a good app but I think you pay for it after 7 days (I don’t actually remember) and if you’re paying for it, you should be getting accurate info. If it’s free then hey it’s free, just don’t rely on the pace..Version: 9.3610

Some problemsI recently used the 5k runner app by the same company to go from couch to 5k, which was really helpful for planning my exercise and motivating me to work a bit harder on every run. I was so happy with it that after the free trial period I paid for the premium experience and as I reached the end of the course I decided to move on to the 10k app. I was therefore pretty disappointed to discover that the 10K app also starts from beginner level, and so I could have started with this app and I wouldn’t have had to pay twice for the same experience. Furthermore, this app is slightly less user-friendly than the 5k app. I like to record my runs after I complete them, and the 5k app would always make it quite clear that my distance included the warm-up and cool-down walks by including that 10 minute in my total time. However, this app only gives the time between the warm-up and cool-down for total time, while the GPS map includes the walks at beginning and end, so I’m completely uncertain if my total distance includes the warm-up and cool-down or not. I think I might search for other apps instead of paying more money for this inferior app..Version: 8.300

OverchargedI was charged for a lifetime subscription and then later that day I was charged for a quarterly subscription. Contacted fitness 22 a week ago and still haven’t heard back. Horrible customer service. Of course Apple is no help.Version: 8.180

Kinda Lame. Canned compliments you can’t switch off.Just like TV shows from the 90’s with. canned laughter soundtracks overdubbed onto the scripts, this app presumes its paying users are stupid or insecure, or both. Every new session begins with a canned “Hey There Awesome Runner” blurb and other insincere drivel. Unfortunately, even with all the “coaching” and “notifications” selected to OFF the app still blathers on. It’s cringeworthy. Some of us who purchased the app might actually just want to hear it tell us what activity to do next. Run. Walk. etc. Spare us the canned insincere compliments. I didn’t buy this app to listed to recorded compliments. I bought this app to provide a running routine program..Version: 9.3300

Good app (sorta) but it’s click bait.I have used the 5K app with success. I got the 10 K app thinking that it would help me get to 10 K, but instead it’s just a 5K app and then they bait and switch and try to get you to buy the last half of the app for $50. Bait and switch is a rip off!.Version: 9.3500

Good but could be made betterI’m on my second time around using this app to get back into running. I really wish they’d add back in the feature that allowed you to manually tick off a run you’d done and add in a feature that allows you to state the run was done on a treadmill where maybe it allows you to enter your running speed and distance covered total to allow it to work out when to add in the optimised runs or to adjust the programme. Currently it keeps changing things thinking I’m running slower than it’d like but it’s actually just that I’m on a treadmill so I’m covering much further ‘distance’ than it thinks.Version: 8.400

No SpotifyDoesn’t link up to Spotify only Apple Music BOO:(.Version: 8.700

Ok at bestWatch and phone run separately. Phone doesn’t show watch runs. No customization next to no coaching. Lifetime membership was a waste of money.Version: 8.411

Don’t like updateI liked this app because I had the option of having it track my run or just tell me what to do based on time. The update doesn’t allow for untracked running. As well the app says it may track you while the app is not in use. That’s a total unnecessary invasion of privacy..Version: 9.2240

A glorified stopwatch with gpsI assumed that since it’s running on an iPhone and has access to the gps and gyros, it would use AI to adapt the program to fit each runner. Instead it just shows the same program to everyone. I’m not at the 10K mark yet but I’m not a couch potato either - the app still tells me to walk every few minutes instead of adapting to my level. I ignore those “walk” instructions and run as much as I can, but the app still shows this as a walk because that’s what it was expecting..Version: 8.004

Had to delete it and lost my progressIt was going well and I really liked it, I actually started a couple weeks late and joined my friend but when I got to the 5k badge (week 8) all of the following weeks disappeared and the only runs I could access were previous runs. The app was saying I was at the finish line and did my 10K when in reality I’d only done half. I emailed them screenshots and they said to just delete the app. WARNING: all the data is saved in the app so all your progress will be lost.Version: 8.411

Apple Watch part doesn’t workThere seems to be a bug with the Apple Watch part of the app, as it implies it will be available (and installs on my watch!) but then never leaves the “open on your iPhone to finish setting up watch app” page. Probably will delete it if I can’t fix this problem as I prefer to run without a phone, but otherwise a great running program..Version: 8.400
