Frosthaven: Official Companion for Negative User Reviews

Shockingly TerribleThis is astoundingly terrible for a paid official app. At best, it’s clunky. The list of things that don’t work well let alone at all, exceed my interest in listing them out..Version: 1.0.2

More updates, still badIt’s getting better each update but it still has poor UX. Adjusting health is tedious and has no indication of responsiveness. Still wish you could put character name in. Lots of little things like normal enemy add button is left of elites, when it makes more sense to be on right and therefore indicative of how it’s used after adding. No drag to adjust health. Having to choose level before seeing characters is annoying..Version: 1.3

Decent first attemptMissing too many features and polish from a well know game developer. This is absolutely not worth 7.99 in its current form.Version: 1.0.2

Bugs almost to the point of uselessnessWhen playing Frosthaven scenario #8, clicking on the “Create summon” or “Add monster” buttons didn’t do anything. We couldn’t add hounds as the scenario advanced, so we ended up using the free x-haven assistant app. I prefer the visual design of this app and I look forward to the improvements and fixes that would make this app fully functional. A companion app is definitely easier than managing all the tokens and cards and counting!.Version: 1.4

Not worth itBuggy (e.g., cards staying on screen when they shouldn’t), missing features (e.g., setting monster numbers, dragging order), way too expensive (struggling to figure out the cost), constantly drops connection when switching apps..Version: 1.1

DO NOT BUY. Free app is better. You’ve had 3 years to make a better app. The old app was made by volunteers and doesn’t have bugs and missing cards like this! What a Shame. This app rarely connects properly, requires internet for multiplayer, and has so many bugs and mistakes that you cannot trust it to function. Worthless..Version: 1.1.1

Absolute Embarrassment of an AppThe pre-Cephalofair drama Gloomhaven companion app was arguably one of the greatest tech companions of all time. Flawless networking, client-server magic, just all around perfect. This app has none of that. This app has a single state that multiple people can see. Previously everyone entered initiative and it was hidden until the draw phase. Nope! Can’t do that apparently it’s too hard for a professional app studio (it’s not, someone is just selfish and greedy). Landscape on a tablet and setting which character has gone and not gone is all sorts of messed up. Summons enter with 0 attack, 0 movement, despite default values being fixed. Can’t set custom names for characters These are my issues in the first hour of use. It’s probable that I’ll encounter more issues as I keep playing. Overall it’s just extremely irritating that we have to deal with this piss-poor app because someone’s greed and ego were more important than customer satisfaction..Version: 1.2.5

Not ImpressedI like how it populates scenarios with appropriate monsters, along with automated modifiers, but no such features for characters. Lots of things that could be tracked and applied, but aren’t. Not as useful as I expected for the hype..Version: 1.2.5

Broken AppUnable to add curse and blessings after new update was pushed.Version: 1.3.1

Please add Mac compatibilityEverything looks nice but trying to use a small phone is tough. I really don’t want to have to buy an entirely new device just for a bigger screen when I already have a Mac..Version: 1.0.1

Good but needs some workUsed this for a few scenarios a couple weeks ago with minor problems (conditions not expiring correctly) but then I tried to use it tonight after the update and found out that I could play Round 1 but when attempting to draw cards for Round 2 it wouldn’t flip the monster cards and proceed. Couldn’t find a work around of any kind. There needs to be a feedback button somewhere within the app too to report things. If there is one I couldn’t find it..Version: 1.2.2

Great Look - Moderate FunctionabilityI love the look of this app - but it most definitely feels like the beta version. So far, we’ve used it twice. The things we really liked: 1. Big clear symbols 2. Great hi-resolution art 3. Really slick look Things that aren’t so great: 1. No horizontal mode on tablets - this means you have to do a lot of scrolling to see all enemies. 2. A lot of ui elements seem too big on a table - they seem more suited for the small screen of a phone. 3. A couple little bugs - when we started the scenario, the monster standee numbers were added in seemingly randomly and not 1, 2, 3, etc… Additionally, when we went to the second section, the new monsters were added in, but their initiatives were not re-ordered, leaving them out of place at the end of the line-up. With a couple of small bug fixes and a horizontal mode, we’d definitely give this app 5 stars - but in it’s current state, it definitely feels like a beta version. At the moment, x-haven still feels like the more reliable solution for tablets..Version: 1.0.1

Landscape mode please!Basic user research would show 99% of iPad users with a stand have it oriented landscape. Please sort as I am using a fan made version after paying for this because of the ineptitude of development. Not what Cepholafair stands for..Version: 1.0.2

Waste of MoneyI had all the members in my group purchase the app, only to find out we couldn’t get the online play to work. Rather than pass around a single phone all night we ended up setting up the physical components. Quite a brave move to force other developers to shut down their helpers only to sell an inferior one at a remarkably high price..Version: 1.1.1

Helpful but not as user friendly as X-haven helperPro: networking mostly worked, though we did hit a few sync issues that we resolved with restarts. Con: 1) randomly generates enemy standee numbers instead of letting us choose. I can see why this might be useful, but we’re accustomed to drawing randomly from he standee bag. 2) does not reorder characters/monsters by initiative when adding monsters after doors are opened. 3) some actions require one tap more than you would expect. For example: I can add an enemy with one tap, but adding a summon requires tapping through a confirmation dialog. 4) previously drawn attack modifier cards are displayed at the top of the screen, covering element statuses. Clearing the display of these cards requires an unintuitive two tap sequence. 5) The top section, which contains scenario title, elements status, and section controls, takes up way too much space, especially since we can’t rotate into landscape or change font size. I have an iPad mini. It seems like this was designed by someone who uses a pro..Version: 1.0.2

Not worth it.If this app was free I would give it two star. The original Gloomhaven Helper was light years ahead of this app and I got it when it was free. The other current helper apps are better as well. But here I thought the official Frosthaven app from Cephelofair would at least be decent, but “NOPE” I was wrong. This app seems more like a quick cash grab than an actual helper. Will be switching back to X-haven app..Version: 1.1.2

Monster attack deck doesn’t reshuffle…Pretty good app so far, but I noticed the Monster Attack Deck doesn’t reshuffle after drawing a crit or miss. It instead goes through the whole deck before reshuffling. This makes the monster attack deck unusable since it breaking a core balance mechanic of the game. Should be a simple fix though once developers catch it..Version: 1.2.5

1.1 doesn’t connectConnection room codes are correct but we get “wrong code” error messages. Host also either gets a room connection code or gets stuck on “loading” and can’t create a room for other players to join. Wait for an update or improvement. There’s so many functionality problems and issues. As well as general annoyances the free apps are better. Don’t pay $14 for this..Version: 1.1

Not workingThe app was working great and I thought it was a nice streamlined way to play, once bugs were taken care of. But recently it got bugged out completely and my old saved game cannot be used at all. I have to create a new party to play it. Fortunately, the campaign isn’t tracked using it.Version: 1.3.4

Lacking some much needed featuresThe design of the app is pretty good but unfortunately I’ve had to stop using it because it lacks envelope x content, summons, proper objective tracking, and the flavour text (ability names) on enemy cards.Version: 1.4.3

Good start, needs polishingThis app has a lot of things going for it. Connecting with other devices was easy, but there was some syncing issues. When marking a scenario as complete after using the app, it leaves the blue flag marker for continuing a scenario. I wish that would clear. They are on the right track ability to track your completed quests. Tracking unlocked quest would be nice as well. When flipping monster modifiers, you can’t see the attack and the modifier at the same time, which just takes some getting use to. Adding conditions isn’t the easiest since you don’t do it in the same place as marking damage. I’d also love condition reminders. Especially for monsters with innate abilities like the snow imp’s brittle. As others have mentioned, landscape mode would help for tablets. All in all, I love the aesthetics of the app. It removes a ton of the burden associated with Frosthaven..Version: 1.0.2

Don’t buy yetApp looks great but we weren’t able to finish a single scenario, it bugs and you can’t do anything but to close the app and restart everything. Super disappointing.Version: 1.2.2

Potential when it’s bug freeGreat for handling initiative and monster card tracking but it’s got some issues right now. - started a 3 player campaign and it auto assigned monsters and boss health as if we were a 2 player party - recent modifier deck overlay persisted and I have to reopen the monster modifier deck to make it go away - connecting to an online session was flakey and we had a player unable to change items after a bit - a monsters health adjustment ended up frozen and we couldn’t change them. Had to delete and recreate - mobile app keeps making players rejoin of the app loses focus Doesn’t feel great that it’s a paid app, officially supported, and buggy out of the gate..Version: 1.0.2

Crippling Bugs Ruin the ExecutionDespite the other low ratings, I took a stab at this because we wanted something to manage our campaign and make our lives easier. As of writing this review, the the official companion is wholly unusable. I expect this to be corrected promptly, but this is the rating as of today. Getting right to the heart of things, on Scenario 1, while usage isn’t as clear as it could be, things began functionally enough on Round 1 and we were able to stumble our way through the first round. Immediately upon entering initiative on Round 2, the monster card draws began and their initiative numbers rolled like slot machines. Forever. Wholly unrecoverable after restarts and everything else you can imagine. Just dead in the water. Fine, we’ll restart and try again. This time on Round 2 draws for the monsters…the game refuses to progress. Now you’ve drawn successfully for the monsters, but the game won’t move forward. The draw button is still lit and you can’t “tap initiative” to move forward with any of the players or monsters despite what cards are drawn or what initiatives are there. If the app can’t be trusted to manage the basics without crashing, then how can I trust it not to waste my time and lose all my progress through Round 12. We ended up breaking out the physical components instead and regenerating the current scenario to move on from the app. For a paid and official app, this screams not speaks, volumes about the lack of quality control. I will add on the positive side that the desired state is (somewhat) clear. I’m not going to harp on the lack of documentation and such as I’d rather have functionality first. There are positive features in here in terms of what the developer wants to do and present. Management of elements, monster and ally decks (at least put in some indicator that the deck is being or has been reshuffled though please), monster health and status, player health/status/xp, round tracking, automation of status effect removals, etc…these are all great features and steps. But none of this matters if your app can’t be trusted to allow a team to progress through each scenario without game-ending bugs..Version: 1.2.3

A step in the right direction, buuutttt……Added much needed functionality, but conditions will auto expire at the end of the round only to reappear at the start of the next round. Are you guys testing this stuff before you roll it out the door?.Version: 1.1

New bugs in new versionGreat update recently but now can’t add monsters when pressing the add monster button.Version: 1.4

Latest Update Causes Major ProblemsUpdate 1.4 breaks character summons. Also NPCs/Objects cannot be given hit points. Also characters cannot increase their hit points above maximum to account for items like the Traveling Cloak. Prior to 1.4 characters could not increase their maximum hit points to account for items like the Traveling Cloak, and positive and negative effects would end at the end of the round rather than at the end of the character's next turn which will almost never be at the end of the round. Updates are supposed to improve the app's usefulness not decrease it!.Version: 1.4

Needs polishApp works at a fundamental level with decent UI, but suffers from connectivity issues. I’ll be in the middle of a campaign with a friend and the host will lose connection. Reconnection almost never works and restarting the scenario setup is a headache. Furthermore, there’s some visual bugs. One example is if host rolls a monster modifier, it shows up on my screen but then the modifier cards stay there blocking my view, until I myself press the modifier deck. Would probably stay away from the app until they fix the main issues..Version: 1.1

Campaign tracking is lackingLandscape mode is vital, as others have mentioned. I’m also disappointed in the campaign tracking, or lack there of. There’s no way to indicate what scenarios are open or locked, which means I will have to maintain a separate list. There’s also no way to track my current team and levels, to determine scenario level automatically. There also seems to be no way to log retired characters. There was a great app to use as a base of what people wanted, and it doesn’t seem to be taken into account at all..Version: 1.0.1

Lacking many features from Gloomhaven helperMissing features that GHS or the old helper had. Just use Gloomhaven Secretary instead..Version: 1.0.2

Terrible compared to the Gloomhaven appSo many errors. Functionality awkward. Very unimpressed with Lucky Duck’s implementation. Really hope they are going to make an effort to improve the app. In the meantime, the free X-Haven app is superior - so save yourself some money!.Version: 1.0.2

App Crashes ImmediatelyThis app doesn’t work. After developer logos and title card the app is blank for a few seconds then crashes. I am using an iPad with iOS 12.5.6, which according to the App Store should be supported. This is very disappointing, especially at it cost £7!.Version: 1.0.2

A pointless, fiddly, cumbersome messThis is trying to fulfil a need that doesn’t exist. We already have a free app called X-Haven that does everything you could ever want from a Gloomhaven / Frosthaven helper and it does every single thing better than this. I am currently watching the Lucky Duck stream where they are talking about how much they are listening to the community to improve on it. No, they really haven’t. By far, the worst thing about this app is the clunky way you are expected to type in initiative numbers for ever single character, every single round. X-haven let’s you drag and drop into the right order which is so much simpler and less clunky. It’s an unforgivable design mistake. I have been asking the devs to implement this change for ages and nothing has materialised. That is just the worst thing but there is so much wrong with this app I could write a whole essay on it. It should be studied as an exercise in how NOT to make a boardgame helper app. Do yourself a favour. Download the far superior x-haven app and save yourself the headache!.Version: 1.3.4

Avoid this appActive bugs and missing critical functionality: 1. If you at any point switch apps you may be disconnected from the server. Once disconnected you cannot reconnect… making the app unusable. 2. The undo button sometimes works, and sometimes is greyed out and does nothing. It is extremely frustrating. 3. The armor value for enemies is not provided. None of this mentions the numerous ui annoyances. Drawing an attack modifier results in blocking the screen for all players until they acknowledge it. The buttons are extremely small and there is considerable delay when clicking them. There is no landscape mode. This app is poorly made. It makes promises it does not keep. I’m sure the devs cared about the game and the community, but at this point this app is closer to a scam than anything else. If the devs want to improve the community they should either take this app down, or need to do dramatic work to make this app workable, and live up to the promises in the app description..Version: 1.0.2

Needs significant workI trust this app will eventually get where it needs to be, but disappointed that the official app (that everyone at the table needs to buy) lacks significant functionality and ultimately does not do nearly as well as the multiple other free apps. We repeatedly get crashes when trying to host games or connect..Version: 1.1

Not perfect but still a must have quality of lifeWhile there is still a lot to improve to this app, it is such a huge quality of life compared to the full manual play. Things I’d like to see added: - hide player initiative until we draw cards (like in the gloom haven app) - full loot card tracking, i.e. full history through the scenario and player assignment - party/campaign sheet tracker - individual player mod deck.Version: 1.3

No horizontal (landscape) view for tabletWhen I’m using an app for a game, I want to be able to view the app on my iPad while it sits horizontally in a stand on the game table. Unfortunately, this Frosthaven companion app has no horizontal (landscape) view available. For me, this makes the app unusable. I don’t want to have to pick up my iPad or iPhone every time I need to make a change in the app. It looks like there are some cool features here. However, this design oversight by the developers means I will never use this app and I just wasted $8. Another fail is the monster modifier deck. When you draw cards, there is no indication of how many cards are remaining in the stack. The number of cards remaining in the modifier deck can be an important strategy element..Version: 1.0

BuggyBoneshaper cant make summons anymore and the add monster button doesn’t work. very annoying.Version: 1.4

Could be much better fir the priceIt is over priced for what it is. I would have liked to have seen Gloomhaven Helper expanded since it was already a great product with more features such as landscape mode and touch support, rather than essentially copy it, force it off App store and charge a huge fee for it. For that price it should add party and loot management and really needs landscape mode and sliding health and initiated bars. I also find changing monster health slow to display change and finicky. I am fine paying the price but the app but it needs to be more than an battle manager. It needs to manage every trackable element of the game and cloud save. If you are going to knock a pioneering, well regarded app off the platform by paying licensing fees and passing that cost onto the buyer, you better do a much better job then the app you are stepping over..Version: 1.0.2

This app does not work in online modeOffline this works fine, but as soon as you try to play with several people on different devices the app freezes and you have to kill it and restart. With the main game so eagerly anticipated and pricey, and the app also adding cost, you’re letting the side down. Please get this fixed..Version: 1.1.2

Not worth a pennyHave an iPhone and this app is constantly broken. As one thing gets fixed other things are broken. Worked ok but then I couldn’t add NPCs or modify health. Now I can do that but my monster modifier deck won’t work. How do you release a patch and not regression test at least the major capabilities of your app. Very sorry I paid for this as it has caused as many headaches as it has helped streamline the game.Version: 1.4.3

Oh, man! This needs work.It doesn't really track a campaign, just your scenarios. You still have to track your resources, xp, gold and other stuff on your character and campaign sheets. Not a huge deal. The point of this app for us was to have less things on the table. All monsters, attack modifier deck, and ability cards can be managed through the app — when they work. It’s buggy. Updates have been released, but we’re still running into issues where we can’t advance after character initiative because the monster abilities won’t draw. We’ve had to completely remove and add monsters to save the scenario and get things working again..Version: 1.2.3

Cannot effect summon hit points… or summon them…Cannot increase staring hitpoints above starting amount (matters for my current class)..Version: 1.4

No landscape option for iPadLike most, my iPad stand puts the display in a landscape orientation. How hard is it to give us an app that rotates and either scales or rearranges the layout? More than annoying..Version: 1.0.2

Great idea, poor functionalityLooked great and was really exited to use it for my remote gaming group. However, nobody could connect to the session, forcing me to scramble to set up the manual way. I Feel bad that in encouraged my group to spend money on this when it isn’t usable.Version: 1.1.2

Broken, againYet another bugged version from a paid app. Use a free app that is better supported, not this constantly useless broken and very infrequently repaired work from first-time programmers.Version: 1.2.5

Wow what a piece of pooLucky duck obviously don’t care about their rep or are not in the app dev business.. were they created just to build this app? UX clumsy; zero sound; unpolished in every way; it genuinely feels like I have installed a scam app as the core of this app stinks. Embarrassing. I wouldn’t fancy my chances of getting dev work after being associated with this project..Version: 1.1.2

Need to fix roll issueThe app is currently re-shuffling monster decks immediately after crits or +2 are drawn. Need to address as this does not match the rules. Should be at the end of round..Version: 1.0

Nice but could be better… for the priceImprovement suggestion: - Being able to switch off each monster not by category but by number would make tracking easier, especially when a lot of the same kind is present. - Customizing loot deck (ex: when adding +1 to a material card) - Auto add NPC for specific scenarios.Version: 1.3.5

Wrong Room Code!!I played the gloomhaven companion app and it was great. This app is giving my party “wrong room code” errors constantly when trying to join the same campaign. Also, why when we enter our character initiative does it show each character the other characters initiative before drawing cards? This is wrong the gloomhaven app had it right and kept them secret until you drew cards. I hope they fix these issues as my party basically threw away our money if they don’t..Version: 1.1

Good start, needs a lot of workLooks great and has some nice improvements, however we had a lot of issues with the app making it nearly unusable. - connection issues with online sessions, some devices connected fine, others sad invalid room. This even happened with the same device, started out fine and then started having problems - battery use seems really high - resuming from a Lock Screen seemed to cause app to get out of sync and start having connection problems - monster attack modifier deck and loot deck lost all their cards and we couldn’t get them to work and had to start using the physical decks - would be nice if boneshaper (and any) summons were loaded with their default stats rather than 0.Version: 1.1.2

So Broken, Utterly UnusableUpdate broke everything. Can’t use it. Can’t draw cards. Resets didn’t work. Please fix..Version: 1.2.1

Undo button doesn’t workNot usable until the undo button works. One team member accidentally ended the round and then we had no idea what the monsters were doing during the current round. Also for some of the monsters it doesn’t show 2 shield, just has the shield icon..Version: 1.0.1

A few issuesHoping these issues can be addressed easily enough with updates. 1. The app is forced into portrait mode, and won’t even rotate 180 degrees. This means I can’t charge my tablet while running the app if I want to have the app stood up and visible. Ideally, having the app able to run landscape would be best. For an app that needs to run for entire sessions, charging is important. 2. Effects that last ‘until the end of your next turn’ should be automatically removed, rather than require the user to physically remove them 3. Conditions that have an effect should be auto applied, such as wound and regenerate 4. The option to apply monster numbers, rather than a random allocation. 5. There is no way to signify which character has completed their turn in a round. You should be able to click on a player to show that they have gone. Just like flipping their name on the initiative order using the physical components. These are all things that have been/ are included in free apps, so I don’t think it is too much to ask. I also have one request which is a hope more than a likelihood: Sync with Forteller to have thematic commentary included in the app. Some sort of verification process to make sure the user owns the content on Forteller, then having it play when you click through the sections. Lucky duck do awesome stuff, so I would expect this product to be at a better standard than it currently is..Version: 1.0.2

Crap at this pointSuper disappointing in its current state. Should have stuck with the company that made the Gloomhaven tracker. Hopefully it will get better with updates.Version: 1.2.5
