Collins Bird Guide for Positive User Reviews

Great service from SupportThe latest update for this app looked like it had hugely increased storage on my iPad mini 5. My older iPad mini 2 showed much less storage for the previous version. I contacted Support over this Bank Holiday and I got swift emails back respectfully asking if I had more video volumes on the mini 5. I checked and the mini 2 only had volume 1 downloaded - doh! Thank you Fiona for your rapid replies and advice. BTW - Fiona says that if you ever need to delete the app then restore it from the App Store your lists will be stored in iCloud (provided you are signed in) so they won’t be lost..Version: 1.7.0

Most comprehensive field guide app availableI’ve been using this app for almost 5 years. It’s an incredible tool for those of you who are not well versed in the ornithology of the U.K./Europe and North Africa. The features that help narrow down likely species in certain countries and habitats based in the info you supply from your own visual assessments will catapult your learning and is far easier than flicking through the book version. I work as a professional ornithologist and this app is such a vital tool not only saving weight on the bulky books I used to carry but also providing a lot of the songs and calls alongside the classic Collins ID plates. If I ever need to double check anything this is always my first port of call. Cannot recommend it enough, it’s pricey... but so is the book and this covers far more..Version: 1.7.7

Great AppGreat App, but WHY three 1GB+ updates in four days ... Please have some respect for user data charges and package your updates more efficiently!.Version: 1.7.1

Excellent Format!!In North America I use the mobile app from Sibley, iBird Pro, and Audubon. My recent trip to Europe was not a birding; bird watching was incidental. Nevertheless, I needed a guide for those times when I encountered birds. In a brand new place and with new birds, the most fulfilling is to be able to ID on my own. The Collins Guide was excellent. The home page has groups or families of birds which makes it very easy to navigate to a groups, e.g. waders or finches, and then to scroll through the group and compare different, but similar species. I found this format far superior to any NA bird app. Species info could be expanded some, but I can’t imagine any other app format which makes it easier to find and identify new birds - the European birds were all new to me..Version: 1.6.4

Great app but problems with 1.4.2We've used this app for a couple of years now with great enthusiasm, and don't have any problems with it. We think it's good value for money, even with the in app purchases, unlike others. But it won't update to 1.4.2 from 1.4.1! Probably doesn't matter, it still runs fine, but worrying that this is an issue. (and the Report a Problem button above doesn't seem to take you anywhere useful!)..Version: 1.4.2

Great but could be better. This is good but could be improved. I cannot find a help feature to contact anyone to get help. There really must be an option to make the video screen full size. A memory of previous searches would also be really useful too. Please make video screen bigger and blackout surrounding type. PS Rotating the device does not make the video full screen on an iPad ..Version: 1.6.5

Definitely most comprehensive birding appsThanx and thanx again to all the folks who made this app and keep all the improvements. No other try within this field could dare to compete. I wish you luck, dudes, keep on keeping on. Translate your app to as much languages as you can and add more and more features. Voices! Add more misc calls, voices, alarm calls, etc. As well as complete translations to all the languages you’ve covered for all the species names. If one day you’ll be ready for put all the texts localized — that’ll be definitely my day. Till then I just want to thank you at least for all the work you’ve done. Waiting for often updates..Version: 1.6.1

My go to bird app also works on M1 MacsThis is my preferred bird id book in App form, and I use if I need to check something when out and about. I am delighted to say that not only does it work on my M1 iMac, opening at what I assume is a size used on iPads, but it can go to to full screen without much loss of definition to the illustrations..Version: 1.7.7

Bird-tasticExcellent app in all aspects. Well and truly worth the high price for such high quality, it really feels slick, smooth, and sharp to use and explore. Bundle this with beautiful illustrations and twenty dollars doesn't seem like much anymore....Version: 1.1.0

The best bird app just got betterThe major update - August 23 - is great. Well worth paying for. More information. Easier to use. Just amazing to have all the info you need in your pocket..Version: 2.0.3

V.goodI think this is v. Good.Version: 1.4.2

Best Old World birding app out thereLike the title says, best Old World birding app I've seen. Slick, good-looking, easy to use ans informative. Reasonably priced, too. If I could take off a half star it would be for slightly pale text that might be tough to read in the field. Hopefully an update will fix that. Otherwise, well done..Version: 1.1.0

When will taxonomy and Latin names be updated? When will taxonomy and Latin names be updated?.Version: 1.7.2

Helpful for me, fun for my catI love this app, as an artist it’s useful to be able to properly identify this birds I’m drawing, and this app helps me even when luring a bird I want to see ☺️.Version: 1.6.2

Works on Apple silicon too!I have always been a huge fan of this app on the iPhone and iPad. Just upgraded my laptop to an Apple silicon model and thrilled to have it working here as well. Hope to see an upgrade to the third edition in the autumn!.Version: 1.7.7

Update on my February reviewThanks for the small but very useful improvements. Introduction and topography diagrams now easily readable (larger font?) and distribution maps can now be enlarged. Great! Oh dear. With the August 2020 update, the labels on the topography diagrams in the Introduction seem to have shrunk again. Please make them bigger, or provide a zoom facility..Version: 1.7.3

Bird book in my pocketI love the fact this bird book is with me all the time. However, I do wish the naming of birds did not require me (a bit dyslexic) to get the spelling 100% right. Could they not have predicted text and cut me some slack?.Version: 1.8.3

Superb app covering all of EuropeHad this app for two days and I and my wife are very impressed. This is the first app that we have found that gives excellent coverage of the whole of Europe, along with a brief description of vagrants etc (though not always with pictures). Agree with Gatekeeper101's review - a search for an individual bird would be most useful. However on his second point ('Thrush' family), by using the 'Thrushes and Chats' icon on the home page the missing two thrushes can be found - so a bug for the developers to fix there in terms of searching by Family. G/L's review states there is no explanation of the colouring on distribution charts - by accident I found that by touching anywhere in the map it throws up a dialogue box with the very information required. I would recommend reading the 'Introduction' box (long grey bar) at the top of the Home page for further useful info about the app, though it doesn't mention the distribution chart info. I have just completed my 'Life List' on the app but was disappointed the app didn't then tell me how many birds were on my list - again, something for the developers to address in the next revision. Overall, however, myself and my wife are looking forward to using this excellent app..Version: 1.1.0

Bird guide problem?Great app but: Only issue is when opening this App that it stays on the home screen for about ten seconds. This is way too long, we know what the app is called ;-) Make it two seconds and we'll all be ecstatic. Others have told me this too! Alan.Version: 1.3.0

Best guide yetI’ve tried several bird guides. This is the most useful I have found. The ability to compare similar species is particularly helpful. Already a large application, but how about adding common names in Welsh where they are in fairly widespread use?.Version: 1.7.2

Back to its top notch selfBTO Bird atlas not working but having reported on Saturday of a bank holiday weekend, the fix came through on Monday. Very impressive... App is back to its full usability once more and all is well. Well done Nature Guides!.Version: 1.6.0

@thetwitcherThis has to be the best app ever created for European birding! I have almost every other bird guide app. This is simple, powerful and easy to use in the field. A must have! Now please make one like this for Australia 😄👍.Version: 1.7.3

Slightly out of dateGreat app but to be the ultimate field guide app it does need to keep up to date. The addition of Wilson’s Snipe for example..Version: 1.7.7

Version: 1.2.0

Fantastic AppExcellent Search functionality making it easy to narrow the list of possible birds for ID. Embedded multimedia with sounds and video. Broadsheets of images to quickly scan and isolate bird ID. Easy navigation and comparison of birds. Clearly a lot of care went into planning this app..Version: 1.2.1

Simply the bestBest app ever for any birdo… Enven if you are not in europe some of the drawings are so useful for worldwide species (shorebirds, seabirds, ducks etc.) a Must-have for any solid birder..Version: 1.0.1

👍all is wellWell done app back up and running correctly Videos all installed nice too see you have sorted it out quickly Top marks.Version: 1.4.2

Add new featureCould you please support searching by the Other language name of bird ( thats already added in the flag icon ) ? Thanks for your great App 🌷🌷🦆🦆🐥🐥.Version: 1.7.7

What a beautiful app! This app is sensational in every way, a pleasure to use and so incredibly convenient when coming from Australia back to Europe, not having to carry my paper version! Highly recommended!.Version: 1.6.4

How a field guide app should be madeJust picked up this truly gorgeous app and I'm beyond impressed. Takes good quality content from Collins' print editions and applies really innovative graphic design and GUI. Focus on showing similar birds to compare. Audio, range maps and text all in easy reach. There are in-app purchase options for three video libraries (common, less common, and rarities) as well as one to add the BTO breeding bird atlas maps for the UK. I added the common birds video on my iPad, while on my iPhone I'll omit that to save space. Similar bird comparisons are 'curated' meaning the app publishers maintain lists of which ones you should also compare. I thought the intro said I could make my own pairings as well, but if so I couldn't find this feature. All other functions are very well presented and easy to see where to tap or pinch to get them. In all, a brilliant app and well worth the purchase price..Version: 1.2.0

Great app, issue with In App PurchasesHave just downloaded this app to my iPad and IPhone. It is essentially the book with some additional features, such as being able to compare different species, bird songs and calls. Haven't yet explored all the facilities yet though! One issue is the In App Purchases. The app comes with sample videos, presumably to tempt you to buy additional videos, which you will probably want to make the most of the app. Volume 1 is over 100 additional videos of common birds which is £5.99. I bought this but it came up with the message "not enough disk space" when I knew I had plenty. To resolve this problem, I went to Settings and selected Restore App Purchases, the videos then downloaded..Version: 1.5.4

Room for improvementI really like it and don’t regret investing. It’s very complete and authoritative, just like the book, but that’s also its drawback: it’s quite slow to use in the field, and I think it’s missed a lot of the opportunities that mobile devices offer. For example, it would be GREAT if the app recognised the user’s current location (or allowed manual entry on the day), and then provided the option of excluding all the extremely unlikely birds from the interface. It would also be great if I could click on a family of birds (e.g. warblers), and then see the members of that family listed in order of likeliness for that area. In other words, it would be great if I could, with one click, see the three most likely warblers for Lakenheath in July, without having to trawl through dozens of exotic and rare but still almost identical species..Version: 1.2.0

New standard for bird appsPurchased the Collins Bird Guide based on the reputation of the Collins book. I am traveling to Europe and wanted an easy but thorough guide for my bird observations. This app is intuitive and engrossing. The birds are displayed in visual diagrams with the ability to drill down to the bird you are observing. When the user identifies the bird, distribution maps, diagrams, sound recordings and similar birds are displayed. Very easy to use. There is a comparison section I'm finding useful before traveling as it allows me to study differences in similar species before heading overseas. I have not used this in the field yet but am enjoying playing with the format and learning a bit about the birds..Version: 1.4.2

No Lesser Redpoll?Surely should include the Lesser Redpoll (Carduelis cabaret). Bit of a spanner in the works for being my primary bird list app :0(.Version: 1.5.1
