LifesaverThis app is amazing. Love the layout & the different categories depending on how you’re feeling. So helpfulI downloaded this app when I was really struggling. I downloaded a lot of others too cause let’s be real I was pretty desperate and this one made the others look horrible. It’s free. It’s a tracker for how long your streak is. It has little cartoon characters. And it’s helpful for when you just need a little boost and when you REALLY need help. There’s 5 minute things and 15 minute things to do. I personally enjoy the five minute ones more because I have the attention span of an almond. I’m currently at 465 days. I never would’ve gotten to this or even six months without this app. I really do enjoy it :).Version: 5.2.4

Calm HarmOverall Calm Harm provides users age twelve and older an experience that encourages them to shift their mindset to activities or tasks that are intended to distract them from self-harming behavior. These activities and tasks are representative of mental health frameworks and engage the user to develop a stronger sense of self and reflect on relationships, accomplishments and health coping mechanisms. The range of activities allows the user to explore their evolving mindset and provides the user with an interface that can likely be used over a period of time. Lastly the data and information that is collected is placed in simple charts and logs which allows adolescent users a quick and effective way to track their progress, patterns and trends. It would be beneficial for the user to be able to share these charts and data with mental health professionals and caregivers without having to provide their passcode and login information. So many usesWhile I originally downloaded this app for its intended purpose many years back, I now use it more for anxiety and OCD than self harm. It’s particularly helpful for OCD when I’m struggling to not give into a compulsion. It’s helped me a LOT over the past month in taking positive steps to improve my hoarding problem—calming me down, distracting me, and comforting me when needed. I hope the app makers eventually recognize all the good this could do for other mental health issues and start advertizing it, but in the meantime, I’ll just be telling people myself. :).Version: 5.1.6

Great app one suggestionI love this app, i’ve only used it for a little while now, but i’ve looked at (i think) all of the features. i know you can submit suggested exercises, but maybe we can make our own private exercises. so that we can feel more related to and it’s just hard to think when you’re in this position. i think it’d just be nice to have this option like “think about this person. think about talking to them and talking about your problems with them” if you know what i mean. and you could put it in whatever category you choose or even make a new category for like favorites for exercises a that help the most.Version: 4.2.0

I locked myself out!This app is excellent. I used it a bunch last year when I was struggling with my mental health, and I was recently cleaning out my phone and found it hidden in my health folder. I tried to log in but I forgot my pin and security answer—I smiled so big when I realized I couldn’t get in. I thought, holy hell, I’ve been healthy for long enough to not need this anymore!! I’m probably going to delete the app because I no longer use it, and I certainly don’t need to have access to all the notes that I wrote when I was in a bad place. However, when I was using the app, it worked perfectly. CalmHarm was exactly what I needed. It’s saved me from countless anxiety attacks and calmed me down when I couldn’t rely on anyone. AmazingI’m 18 and began self-harming around 11. although over time it occurs much less frequently, every once in a while a really bad urge comes out. in more recent years ive started to feel much more insecure about my scars and have become more dedicated to bettering myself instead of hurting myself. having all these tools makes me really think about why i am feeling the need to hurt myself, immediately creating a sense of mindfulness that i often lack when i’m feeling so down and impulsive. it’s not simple- i have to think instead of just feel, and often have to repeat exercises several times- but along with the determination to finally quit, it ultimately keeps me from doing something i will absolutely regret later..Version: 4.2.1

Good App, some suggestions!I saw this app on Twitter. I was looking for an alternative to some breathing based apps for winding down and then saw the distraction option for this app (and the breathing one). Thought it was an interesting concept even though I don’t physically self harm (I just overthink things). I know this is geared towards people who self harm but really it could be used for everyone at every age. I think it’d be helpful if you had different reasons to choose from why you’re using the app because the get help literature is excessive upon first use and kind of put me off a little bit. Also, it was giving an error when selecting location so I picked a different location and changed it later in settings. When people want help the last thing they need is an error screen. Otherwise, great app upon first use. Will return and hope for positive changes!.Version: 3.0

Very helpfulI sometimes have certain periods of time when I’m very sad or frustrated and this app really helps. I normally don’t have the urge to self harm but I do use the app a lot because it helps me calm down so that there is less of a risk of me thinking about self harm. I think my favourite one is the breathing exercise because it just helps me calm down but I also really like the other ones. Amazing but some things need to be fixedThis app is great, except the log in is so stressful and aggravating. when you tap on the bar that asks you to log in, it takes about 10 tries until the keyboard pops up and it makes me even more aggravated and upset than before. also i wish there was an option for a random activity so you didn’t have to scroll through every time and choose one. Right off the bat…I was curious about this app, and right away there’s this moving animation on the Home Screen that I can’t turn off. I tell you what, that would contribute to my stress if I were trying to get used to where I needed to go. There should be an option to toggle it off, or fade it out after a few repetitions. Helpful!!I’ve used this last year as it was a suggestion by a therapist, & just started using it again recently. It has helped me out!! I am glad more people have suggested things to do!! :D I think though, there should be a gaming place where ppl can use the mascots (if they’ve chose any), & play with them?? Maybe a section where you listen to ocean waves or nature, as some cannot go outside. A video of where there are visuals of the mascots talking & telling you to breathe or are telling to close ur eyes & telling you what to imagine!! Changed my life!I started cutting myself about 5 months ago. I didn’t think it was that bad until my friend told me she cut herself and was getting a therapist. I knew I had to tell my mom. It was hard. I stayed up for a whole night thinking of what to do. I told my mom after school the next day. She was glad I told her and helped me. I went a week without cutting (hardest week ever). Unfortunately I started cutting again from stress. Then I found this app. It changed my life. I don’t know what I would do without it. I’m now 1 week without cutting. This app has literally saved my lifeThis is a wonderful concept. I think my favorite part about it is that the activities have categories. For instance, very few health apps have a “distract” solution. This is often one of the most important ways to help someone in the moment. Thank you for being absolute geniuses. The customization within the app is also very soothing, and the little characters are adorable. Science says that living by a body of water is good for the mind, so your theme is sweet and reminds me of the ocean and every wonderful memory I have from going to beaches. If there is any way in which I can support your app, I would love to. I do recommend that you take a page to list hotlines, not your own, but maybe the national hotlines for most countries. Pretty good concept with room for improvement.My self harm is actually binge eating or snacking unecessarily. That being said this still seems to work a fair amount of time. The suggested improvements: •Needs Touch ID. Who has time to log in everytime? •When it asks you to list things it would be nice to put like 20-30 blank lines that can be typed on. Coming up with a mental list actually stresses me bc it feels like a test where I need to remember my answers. •How about a virtual dice or a virtual bubble wrap? It’s not entirely practical for me to keep things like that with me. •How shout a diary section or a way to vent or type as an addd feature of “support” or “distract”? Overall good app! Very goodI was told to download this app by my therapist, and it has helped a lot. Something i find very useful and comforting is that the distractions and techniques (such as drawing or painting or baking etc) are all normal activities and don’t make me feel different or alienated. One thing I think could be good is some distractions within the app, instead of all on paper or in person. For times when people are feeling extremely down, it can be difficult to get up and do things. Maybe something like in-app games or questionnaires would be good. Wonderful for anyone struggling with mental healthJust downloaded this to see what it was like, and it was actually really, really nice. At the end of each session it has a journal and self survey that you can fill out so you can keep track of your experiences and see what helps you best. It also asks (generally) what was wrong and then gives you advice on how to deal with that problem or how to fix it. It also has a direct link to a help hotline and 911. Helps a lotI’ve been struggling with self harm for years now and it’s been pretty hard to manage. This app definitely helps a lot, and I love how it tracks your moods and lets you use a journal to keep track of your progress. The only thing I would suggest is that after you “ride the wave” it asks you to pick how you’re feeling (sad, numb, angry, etc.) and it only lets you pick one. It would be nice if it would let you pick multiple because there are some days when I feel both angry and sad equally. It is NOT per se, a screen interactive app- it it does not have in app-minigames to distract you, or a spot to type prompt responses. I find it useful to type my “responses” in my notes app or in the self-monitoring section of the app afterward. It has a countdown timer on the screen for the duration of you doing your activity, whatever that may entail, and then you pick the phone back up/reopen the app when the timer is up and reasses how you are feeling..Version: 5.2.2

Login one timeI just got this app and it seems like it will be VERY helpful! This is my first comment on any app ever. I normally don't comment or review apps, but this one is important. The one problem I have with this app is that each time you enter the app you have to login. I know that when I am an emotional/mental unstable place it can be difficult to think of things like passwords or I might need help a little faster than it takes me to remember a password and then type it in. Amazing but has some flawsIt’s annoying to constantly have to log back into it. I don’t know if it’s just me or other people are having the same problem. Sometimes I forgot my password and memorial word and can’t get in for a while. Sounds good!I found the app easy to use, which was helped by what I recognized as the utilization of many therapeutic techniques, including setting small, measurable goals, self-monitoring, and a strengths-based approach. Given that self-harm is not something I have personally experienced, I do not know how helpful it would be when used, but the design and functionality of the app make me think it would be an extremely useful resource for social workers to recommend for adolescent patients who struggle with self-harm. Personally, I just use it to calm down when I feel nervous or feel an anxiety attack coming on, but I've seen it work for lost of different people in lots of different situations. Excellent appI am a psychotherapist and I recommend this app to a number of my clients who self harm. They have all had varying success with it and all have found it beneficial. I have also used this app for clients with OCD. It enables to refocus their thoughts using the app for distraction purposes. Very helpful!There are a few things I think could be fixed, but other than that this is an extremely helpful app I think it would be good to have the breathing excessive last longer instead of it stopping every minute. I also wish the random category allowed you to do activities from all of the other categories instead of randomly selecting a category. Over all absolutely amazing!.Version: 3.2

I like it but there’s one problem..I already did one activity where I really was desperate to self harm and I didn’t want to do it anymore after that. The only thing that annoys me about this app is everytime I exit out the app for a second and come back it always asks me to login with my password. Also when the urge to self harm isn't very strong, at least for me, the act of having to type in a password makes me stop and think long enough to be like "don't do this". Really helpful, discreet, and privateThis has really helped me slow down and not make any irrational or harmful choices. It has lots of different options for distractions, coping skills, releasing bad emotions, and the like. My favorite is the breathing exercise. It’s really simple and so effective. It’s discreet enough you can use it almost anywhere. I’ve used it to get over panic attacks at school, home, public areas. It works wonders. Plus, the app is very private in that it has you put in a password before you can enter the app, that way no nosy siblings or friends can invade your privacy..Version: 4.0.1

Big helpThis app has been a big help to me over the past few months, just wish I’d discovered it earlier! The app does keep log of how often you use the app however I think you should be able to also add times you had the ‘urge’ or self harmed but didn’t use the app to keep a better log for our doctors of how frequent it occurs as personally if I’m in public when I get the urge I don’t use the app and sometimes I forget I have it. Very good appTbh I love this app I normally get on this app before my bed time that’s when the urge to self harm is stronger when I try to stop myself from doing this it makes me stressed so I go on this app I quite like the art ones bc I’m a creative person myself but other ones like walks I can’t go out on walks bc I’m only 12 and I could be dangerous. Very helpfulThank you so much for developing this app-it sure helps alot of people :) Please just note that there are more ways than one that people harm themselves and some of those include hitting things or snapping a rubber band on the skin, even if these ways aren't as destructive as other, consider if they're really a good alternative, because that's still self harm. Also have a suggestion :)I haven’t been using this app for not a long time and my therapist recommended it to me, but I absolutely love it already, all the activities and breathing exercises are lovely and its helped urges a lot !! I do have a suggestion for a dark mode option, as there are themes but the screen is bright. I use it at night as well and its super harsh on my eyes haha! Childhood Problems Finally ResolvingI’ve had problems with self harming since I was a kid and I got over it for a while until I entered college this year. This app has been so helpful in helping me resist hurting myself when I feel like I’ve failed. My only problem is because of the way I will self harm I can start harming really quickly and because of the password on the app I sometimes find myself harming before I can even type the password to get in. Downloaded during an emergency not expecting it to helpHaving PTSD triggers inducing extreme emotional flashbacks recently has caused almost constant inescapable feelings of anxiety thus triggering my sh urges. The suggestions help me realize there is other ways to escape, and I did not even need to complete set up to use the tools. The creators clearly are knowledgeable of DBT skills and truly care about users mental health. I am lucky to be able to receive professional help as well, but this app has helped me cope tremendously. It is so much better than others like I Am Sober, that do nothing but make you feel bad once you press reset. Amazing app! (and suggestions)I just wanna say I love this app, it’s helping me break my bad habit. It reminds me of all the positives in a moment of negativity and it’s so genius that it forces you to refocus to something positive, and gets your mind off the bad stuff. It also rewards you with streaks with little badges! And it gives helpful resources for things the app cannot do. I do have a suggestion though. When activities start where you have to use your phone, for example texting a friend, the timer never works out of the app for me. I’ll go to my messages app while the timer is at 4:45 or so, and when I get back 5 minutes later it’s still at the time I left it. It would very helpful if it could work out of the app so I don’t have to use another device, though I understand this is out of your control. Best tool for a counsellor to support kidsI am a counsellor and I work with teenagers and parents and I always recommend this app! It is the best app ever to avoid self harming. The only thing that would make the app even better (5 stars) would be if they could make into different languages (i.e. French or Spanish). It’s great...when it works.I recently switched to the iPhone X. It worked perfectly fine on my 8 plus. However everytime I need to log in, the keyboard won’t pop up when I need to sign in. This frustrates me because I really depend on this app to help me get through tough days and I can’t when the app won’t work. 👍🏾I’ve read some of the other reviews; they are very mixed. A while back my school counsellor told me to down load the app and do some the activities if I feel the need. At first I didn’t want to get up and find a pen to doodle or call someone, I found the app very frustrating because of that and I think a lot of other people did to. However I think people forget to understand that mental health is different for everyone so this one app cannot work for everyone. It’s not the creators’ fault that this app hasn’t worked for you. It still didn’t work for me so I deleted the app for a while. I’ve decided to download it again. GreatI don't normally write reviews but I find this app amazing to help me ride the wave and manage my urges. It doesn't always stop my urges (which is my own issue, however it has REALLY HELPED!) it has so many suggestions and different ways to help ride the wave and you don't even have to use it for self harm it can help ride the wave for a lot of issues related to mental health problems. It also helps you keep a log about your urges and asks you rate how the activities helped your urges! Highly recommend!.Version: 2.1
