Imbroglio for Positive User Reviews

An addictive utterly unique gemLike most Brough-verse games, it takes a little time for the game mechanics to sink into your brain, but once they do this is an impossible-to-put-down masterpiece. The dungeon floor as your "deck" of attack/ability cards that you move around on and how they level up based on where you and your enemies are when you defeat them forms the core of what makes this game so good. You have to balance care and risk in both pursuing the gem of each floor and killing enemies to level up your cards. The high score nature of the game keeps me coming back again and again after every defeat, most of which are my own fault. That's the mark of truly good game design..Version: 1.03b

Emergent strategic geniusDoesn't look like much at first. Seems pretty simple after a play through or two. Then you check the high scores and realise how much you have to learn. It's a game that reveals itself as layer upon layer upon layer. A simple rule set with seemingly infinite customisation gives you a game as deep as you want it to be. If it gets its hooks in to you, you'll be playing this a long long time..Version: 1.0

Amazing!A truly incredible game, and it explores its mechanics to its utmost..Version: 1.09c

My favorite gameWill always have a place on my phone. This game is incredibly rewarding when you figure out how to succeed. It makes you feel smart. And it's fun. This never gets old..Version: 1.06

Pretty Perfect (when you lose it will be entirely your fault)One of the truly rate games where skillful play is more important than luck or IAPs (of which there are none except for the expansion pack). A massive variety of weapons, adventurers, and monsters; All balanced to perfection. At first, you won't know why you are dying so fast, but keep playing and the light will come on. And... iPhone X native screen support!.Version: 1.07

AddictiveBrilliant little strategy game. It takes a bit of effort to figure it out but once you remember what each tile does, the game really opens up..Version: 1.01

It grows on youIt’s entertaining, and you don’t realize the hours are going by. I think there’s a bug, though, where if you unlock a character and then delete and re-install the game, it won’t unlock them again unless you beat your high score (saved in Game Center). Be wary of this; hopefully dev can fix it one of these days..Version: 1.09c

A simple but addictive gameSimple but clever and beautifully executed game. Perfect learning curve with additions to characters and tiles as you progress to maintain interest. Wonderfully free of in-app pay-to-pay purchases. The only reason not to get this game is the same reason I may have to delete it from my phone soon: it is utterly, utterly addictive..Version: 1.01

Another great game from Michael Brough.Unique and unusual are two words for Broughs games that always come to mind. This is another great little game who's depth and strategy comes out the more you play it. I recommend this as much as any of his other games which I have also purchased (868-Hack) is just brilliantly mindboggling. 5/5 :).Version: 1.03b

PerfectThis is everything I want from a mobile game (fun, challenging, easy to pick up/put down, relaxing) without everything I don't (freemium, IAPs that aren't expansion packs). It's held my attention an order of magnitude longer than most mobile games. The sound design is very nice and relaxing. The art is... not well drawn, per se, but done with consistency and a cute aesthetic that makes the whole thing very charming. Beautiful game design from Michael Brough as always. Anyone who likes this should also get 868-hack. It's a crime this doesn't have more reviews..Version: 1.04

Just buy thisBuy without reservation. This guy puts out quality polished games that'll keep you coming back for more. Reasonable cost and no additional in app purchases. Art and sounds are not his traditional style, which is a huge plus for me. Keep the games coming sir!.Version: 1.0

Perhaps his best yetI'm a big fan of Michael's previous games - Zaga-33 and 868-HACK in particular. So far, I'm thinking this might be his best (which surprise me, given how highly I rate Zaga). Again, it's a micro-subversion of what is 'Rogue-like', with its own distinct ruleset and ideas - and it works brilliantly. Actually, I found this the most quickly understandable of Michael's games... and I feel like it's going to have more longevity than 868-HACK. Basically, if you're a fan, you won't be disappointed. If you weren't a fan, I think it's just possible that this, with its fresh visual style, might change your mind..Version: 1.0

So far so goodI've just played enough to open deck edit for the first four characters but Imbroglio seems very promising and easy to recommend for 868HACK fans. Looking forward to playing more and getting a sense of the weapon balance/synergy. Maybe a random (character-legal) board button on the edit screen would be nice..Version: 1.0

Fantastic game. The add-on is worth itOne of the most addictive games I have played. A perfect mix of up front strategy and planning and turn based tactics. The add-on with the new game mode is all I play. I love the weapon limits and 4 day tournament feel. Great work!.Version: 1.04

Brilliant! This is a terrific game that has an interface as smooth as something simple like Threes, but it has a depth of play that is far beyond simpler games. It has that "just one more game" addictiveness that will see you trying to improve on your bat score. Highly recommended..Version: 1.03b

Simplistic DepthThis game is both easy to just pick up and play when you need to kill time but it also has many layers of depth, from positioning to choosing your weapons and where to put them. It satisfies a need for quick games and engrossing gameplay. I highly recommend this title..Version: 1.02

AmazingI take my hat off to you sir! This is a great game..Version: 1.0

So much fun...More puzzle than roguelike, this turn-based game is equal parts frustration and joy. Move around randomly-generated mazes trying to up your score and keep alive. Then, after you've gotten the hang of things (or you think you have...) build your own tile layout and start building things up in addition to staying alive. There's plenty of unlockables in this fantastic game, there's nothing quite like it anywere....Version: 1.04

Classic smestropShort version: If you are a fan of Michael Brough buy this now. Long version: I think this is the closest thing to a "normal" game from smestrop that we will get. It has the signature grid based puzzle action that we expect, but now you build the grid! There is a basic set up that is kind of a tutorial but after you master it you get the ability to change the grid however you want. Having your weapons set to the position on the ground makes you feel like you are scoping out the room and planning out your attack, except the room always is changing so you have to try to spread your options out instead of just relying on one type of approach all the time. Basically it's a great game to wrap your head around and I'm interested to see if this will beat 868-HACK as my favorite iPhone game... Just buy it already!.Version: 1.0

SuperbUnputdownable. It's a steep learning curve but it's very rewarding once you crack it..Version: 1.04

Great difficulty rampThis might look intimidating, but it's so simple to play anyone can get into it. The ability to copy board layouts from people on the leaderboard means you can do as much or as little strategizing as you want. It feels like Threes, where you can instinctively move quickly, or think three moves ahead. Both are equally rewarding..Version: 1.02

Brilliant!Another brilliant game by Michael Brough. An evolution of the rogue-like game Brough successfully explored with Zaga-33 & 868-Hack. Biggest addition to the genre are weapon floor tiles that can level up. Finding the right weapon tile to kill enemies brings some strategic flare. The ability to customize tile layout after getting an intermediate score brings a deep layer of strategy that feels like building the perfect game card deck. Thanks for a wonderful game!.Version: 1.0

Very funny ^^It is so fun and good game.Version: 1.05

I keep coming backI’ve never wrote a review till now. This game is the one that deserves it. It’s challenging, has high replayability, and is mostly fair. 90% of my losses in this game are my own fault. Occasionally the wall shifts will trap me in the worst possible position, but plan accordingly and this shouldn’t be an issue. I’ve been playing this for years now. It’s the only game that I’ve never deleted from my phone..Version: 1.08b

SublimeHas a bit of a learning curve but after a few games things start to make sense in this roguelike / deck-building / RPG game. Like the other games from this dev, months if not years of play can be expected..Version: 1.01

Classic gemIf you like puzzle games, rogue-likes, or games like Threes, this is a must-have. It’s been on my devices for many years and is still one of my favorites. Takes a bit to grok, but once you do… it has incredible depth and replay value..Version: 1.09c

Love new mode with one big exceptionYou can read other reviews for general impressions of the game, but in general this is a near perfect game. I love the new draft mode, except that you can only play the level you create once. It takes too long to be recreating boards over and over to only be able to play it once. Unless I am missing something. Please please change that so we can play each board unlimited until we decide to move onto the next board..Version: 1.09c

I give it a 5/7, full marks!Brough’s games occupy a very different kind of design space on iOS…Angry Birds this is not, thank god. While you can play a round of Imbroglio quickly, you’re punished for doing so. Imbroglio is a real puzzler and has so many levels of complexity to it. Interesting tweak to this game is that you get to determine what the terrain looks like by placing weapons on each tile. Download and play for a bit, then re-read the rules because you keep dying, then reread again. So good. Thank you!.Version: 1.0

Cannot open itI just can't open it. Reinstalled several times but it just doesn't work..Version: 1.05

Beautiful, deep.Every game by this developer is fascinating, this is no exception. I feel I'm slowly understanding something big when I play this. Plus, beautiful sound design..Version: 1.0

Argh! This is a great app! However, I just downloaded IOS 11 and now I can’t get it work at all. Please fix 😝.Version: 1.05

ExquisiteHighly compact and inventive take on the classic RPG dungeon crawler. Builds on the procedural design of 868-Hack with 8 unique 'classes' and allows players to design the layout of upgradeable weapons that line the dungeon floor. The sound design and art style are wonderfully unique as well..Version: 1.0

A near perfect gameImbroglio is possibly the most elegant game I’ve ever played..Version: 1.09c

Tightest game design everAll that this game lacks in visual polish it makes up for in depth. As a game designer I am in awe of all the complexity and intricacy the designer was able to cram into a 4x4 grid. It starts out as a survival/optimization game, turns into a deck building game, and at high levels of play is a procedurally generated puzzle game. It is surprisingly deep. Well worth your time..Version: 1.02

The best iOS game I've playedI've probably put 50 hours into this game and I'm still finding new play styles. It seems really convoluted at first but everything comes together after your first few games. Now I just want dlc with new heros and weapons..Version: 1.02

Back working....five starsYay back working....well done I can now get back to swiping..Version: 1.09c

AwesomeBut I wish it supported iPhone X screen..Version: 1.07

Masterful Tactics!Imbroglio rules in many ways. Its awesomeness is impossible to overstate. It is challenging, clever, complex, and boss..Version: 1.09c

Beautifully designedOne of the top 4 or 5 mobile games I've ever played. Whether element of the game design is beautifully thought out and expertly combined. This new work continues to advance Brough's pioneering explorations in the young art of digital game-crafting. It's also very fun and terribly mysterious..Version: 1.03b

Brilliant! Huge replayabilityI’ve played hundreds of games for 30 years. I am very picky and most games bore me. This game is great. It can be replayed over and over because you can change the “tiles” that the character attacks from..Version: 1.07

Amazing game!!!Another gem in my collection!!! It sits right next to 868-Hack. And won't leave my phone ever. Thanks for this fantastic fantastic game!.Version: 1.0

AmazingEach of Michael Brough’s games are a masterpiece in original design, and Imbroglio has to be best of them. Strategy, tactics, depth and planning, yet all handled by a smooth UI which is perfect for one handed, turn based play..Version: 1.07

BrilliantBeen playing off and on for a year now, I really think it's up there (yet nothing like) Tetris..Version: 1.05

An excellent titleThis is the kind of game I comb the App Store looking for. It's an actual game!! Fun to play, and challenging. The focused problem solving of this game is what makes it fun. I find it accessible without focusing on characters or world-building (which often detracts from actual fun) while also being challenging without being ridiculous (or relying on pay-to-win crap). I like the fact that it doesn't spoon feed you: once you get over the learning curve, this is a game among games. Absolutely splendid..Version: 1.04

My goto subway game for 2016, and beyondIt's an excellent game with tons of variety that works offline, works one-handed, is fine without sound if you want to listen to music or a podcast, and displays all of its accumulated consequences in such a clear way that even if you come to your stop halfway through a game, you can pick up instantly where you left off without having to remember anything..Version: 1.03b

Better than 868 hackIf I wasn't such a huge fan of his work I might not have stuck with this game, but I'm so glad I did. It takes a little while to grasp all the concepts but when you do it all just clicks so well. Really deep and engaging, and such great pacing for mobile too..Version: 1.0

SuperbMichael’s games always have a depth and clarity of gameplay that, once you get the core proposition, is somewhat breathtaking. There’s a reason why there’s a gap between his games despite the somewhat simplistic presentation. The polish isn’t in the visuals, it’s in the play..Version: 1.0

Love it, simple and endlessly deepOne comment on recent patch - you can still use Harry build with now-outlawed range-ish options by copying a friends board that used them back when they were legal. I would prefer to see, and ideally help develop if I were better, a new Harry meta. I like that last sentence..Version: 1.08b

I love all your games.Especially, 868-HACK. I'm so glad to see a traditionalist who makes original games, for a change..Version: 1.04

Fantastic tactics in a 4x4 gridThis game has been devouring hours and hours from my life - I'm itching to start another run while I type this. Imbroglio is a turn-based tactics game where each space of your grid is a different weapon with various capabilities. A mace hits hard, a magic dagger teleports enemies away from you, a needle restores health, etc. Kill an enemy, the weapon you are currently standing on starts to level up. Each enemy has specific weaknesses, so positioning yourself on the right tile in the right moment is critical - you'll go down fast if you don't think ahead. The game's most devious and ingenious bit of design is it allows you to customize the grid yourself - there are a few dozen weapons to choose from, and I find myself constantly reconfiguring my layout to improve my game. The tiles look nice, but the character art is simplistic and ugly. Don't let that put you off - the sound design (all acoustic guitar) is lovely, and the game is intensely replayable. In the insane, advertisement and IAP world of the ap store, somehow $4 has become "expensive" - but if you like strategy games, I cannot recommend this game more. Brilliant design is worth money - and Imbroglio is brilliant..Version: 1.0

Beautiful piece of artI have never reviewed an app but I'm in love with this game. I've never played a game like it. I'm an artist and recognize the beautiful simplicity of working within tight parameters to create something deceptively complex. Bravo!!.Version: 1.0

Incredible gameOne of the most enjoyable games I've ever played on a mobile device. It takes a few minutes to figure out the strategies, but once you look at some of the leaderboards to get tips for board design, the game's intrigue, play-repeatability, and genius just explode..Version: 1.04

An amazing game for all occasionsImbroglio is an extremely enjoyable rogue-like that is playable in both short and long sessions. The game allows you to create different combinations of characters and weapons before you start a round. The expansion that comes with the app adds many fun play styles and is definitely worth the money. Almost definitely the best game I've ever played on iOS, and possibly even my favorite of all time..Version: 1.03b

Another home-runM.B. hits it out of the park again. It's only when I lose hours in a game I write reviews. This enigmatic game is well worth both your time and money. A novel and absorbing blend of genres. Highly original. Thanks Michael :-).Version: 1.0

Deep, Challenging, EngagingPerfect for a train commute. Turn based, challenging, doesn’t get old. Love it!.Version: 1.07

Added to my "permanent" screen within a few playsThis is such a great app. Within a few plays it landed on the screen I reserve for apps I never plan to delete. If you like the game there is really no reason to. It combines puzzle and fantasy elements wonderfully. You get to unlock and choose from characters with varying special abilities. You also get to design the map, which is basically weapon tiles. Not only can these be combined to produce great synergies, they can also be selectively upgraded and become more powerful sometimes gaining special powers of their own. In the end this is a high score game, but the number of possible strategies makes it infinitely replayable..Version: 1.01

So excitedOne of the best games on the app store. So excited for an expansion! Thanks Brough!.Version: 1.07

Nice but not amazingIt's a beautifully put together game, with nice artwork and an innovative new type of gameplay. However, something seems missing from it that I feel somewhat regretful of spending money on it. Maybe it will grow on me more as I play it..Version: 1.01

He did it againAnother winner! Imbroglio is a great mix of short-term tactical gameplay mixed with long-term strategic planning. Over time, you'll get better at slaying monsters in the labyrinth, but your board will evolve too, as you unlock new items and tinker with the configuration. This game is one for the home screen--do not sleep on it..Version: 1.0

Brough's FinestI enjoyed previous games by this author like 868HACK but Imbroglio is by far their deepest game. If you enjoy serious puzzle games or rogue-likes then you may be up to the challenge. There are few hints on how to play but the color coding makes it pretty clear if you spend a little time experimenting. Persevere for more than a few minutes and you'll be rewarded with a considerable amount of play styles..Version: 1.0

LOTS of optionsIn case other reviews or the pictures lead you to believe otherwise, this is not a rouge-like game. This is a turn based strategy game. It's pretty good, still. Simplicity of design and basic mechanics make it easy to get started and your choices do affect the outcome. Once you unlock all of the weapons, there are so many options it can be overwhelming. I hope and hope that the author adds a randomize option to board creation. I feel like I would just keep coming back to challenge myself on a random board. It would also force me to step outside of my comfort zone and learn how to use more of the weapons. $4 is a bit steep, but I can appreciate that this isn't going to be a multi-platinum title and small developers need to get paid, too. Randomize Board option. Add it, please!.Version: 1.02

MasterpieceSo much brilliance packed into a small space..Version: 1.09c

One of the Best!Imbroglio is one of the best puzzle/roguelikes on the app store, simple grid simple mechanics but a ton of strategic depth between the characters and cards and the board changes each time after picking up the star really keeps you thinking! Im a big fan of Brough’s games, minimalist designs but lots of depth. Should be featured constantly on the app stores best puzzle/board/strategy front pages. Never leaves my phone, thanks Mr. Brough!.Version: 1.07
