X Drummer: Songwriting Tool for Negative User Reviews

One of positives grids biggest IOS blundersThis had the potential to become what was and is still very much needed on the IPad, which is EZ Drummer. If only the developers weren’t so shortsighted. Number 1, it shouldn’t have been an auv3 app , number 2, it needs to have separate output support for each kit piece. At this point it’s abandoned and I know those things will never happen, in fact no one at PG is sharp enough to make ANY of their apps into audio units. I just do t think they should make anymore apps for the iPad because they really don’t understand it’s user base at THIS point..Version: 1.5.12

Very unhappyThis app does not do what it said it would. I get it to sample my song and it picks he can’t attract it isn’t even close. It cannot be edited to fit what I’m doing. This is a toy and I need a real drum track that I can Adjust to fit the song. Complete waste of money. Garage band is better. I want a refund. You have made it impossible to get one..Version: 1.5.8

Doesn't work as advertised.Play your guitar and it creates a drummer for you. Great idea but flat out does not work. Timing is off by miles. Works as a metronome but not worth the mention net imo. Really wish I could get my money back!.Version: 1.0.3

Keeps crashingHow do I get my money back? This app keeps crashing. Every time I hit the store button or hit to unlock some of the templates, the app crashes..Version: 1.5.0

AverageVers. 1.5.6 seems like it promises more than it delivers right now. It kind of feels like music memo’s with more features, only at least music memos supplies a bass player. Still depending on what you expect to get out of it ... could be worth it for you. Sound quality is good. But I’m not convinced I got my money’s worth at this point..Version: 1.5.6

I’d give it 5 stars… butThere needs to be more metal drumming styles… or maybe the ability to change the snare drum rhythms.. like an option to space out the snare drums or put them closer? I dunno. I just think iOS or Positive Grid needs to have an extreme metal drums package for guitarists and producers alike. That heavy metal package is just so outdated.. Positive Grid has some of the most distinguished of death/extreme metal guitarists on it’s roster and no drum pack to back them up on iOS just yet? They get dubbed the “heavy metal drums”. It’s like one category of heavy metal. Come on, now! 😂.Version: 1.5.12

Would like my money back thanksIt was left me lacking and outright disappointed. I would like my money back please..Version: 1.5.12

Jumped the Shark...I cannot believe that a company with the credibility of Positive Grid would release a $20 app, that has ZERO direction, manual, links to some tutorials, etc... I guess if you are as smart as this AI drum program, it won't be a problem. As for me, and the dregs who actually like a tad of "How to" when we shell out $20 for a dam iPad app, we're out of luck. TD.Version: 1.0.1

No Bluetooth Headphone SupportThis app is useless if you use Bluetooth headphones. It disables your Bluetooth headphones when you enter the app. For a songwriting tool this is awful. If this is a bug it needs to be corrected ASAP..Version: 1.5.12

Low ratingI am giving a low rating just because when I buy a product I want to have the manual under my nose, and here I don't. I hate buying and have to journey through an external website, and then still not having a simple way to get the stupid manual on pdf. So, 1 star from me. Too bad, it could have been a lot higher. Sorry, "Positive". UPDATE: actually, this software does deserve a low rating even from a musical point of view....I have been a pro musician for years, the drum patterns are all 8 bar phrases. But musical phrases are not necessarily always made of a specific number...and if your piece uses 4 bar phrases for a section, you need a fill, but the packs come with only 1 fill! ridiculous! Have you ever heard a drummer coming into a studio, who can only play 8 bar phrases and when you tell him: "play a fill on the 4th bar of that phrase" the drummer replies: "sorry, I don't know anymore fills, I only have a spare one for each song". I want my money back. Another software made by computer nerds, not real and proven musicians. Also, I bought one of the packs, there's 3 spare fills. Once again, the fills are too few, you can't do any serious work with this software. Could have been a hit, but it's not, unfortunately. I think the Ipad is a brilliant platform for serious musicians. I bought this hoping it would be better than the brilliant Drummer (which amazingly is even free ) in Garageband, but I was mistaken.Version: 1.5.12

A work in progress?I like Positive Grid products, Jamup Pro is great. This one does seem a work in progress. Along with what other suggestions I see people have made, I would add the following comments: When you add an AI pattern to the song editor, it's not what you initially hear! Say it picks up Rock 05 as Explosive, when you add to song it puts in Rock 05 Original and only the verse and chorus! Why not all the parts! And it overwrites the whole song! Also when you hear the sample, it gives you a click track intro - it would be nice if that was also added to the song or a manual click bar(s) could be manually added! As mentioned a click intro (or to put in at any point there is drum silence) would be nice! And also this can be included when exported, so that in the DAW you can have the click intro and also without click intro as separate tracks if required to hear actual song or to record... I think it needs better fine tuning, like being able to completely remove the bass drum and/or snare etc on drum patterns. When you use the AI, whatever it detects should be particular to what you are actually playing and only that part of the drum pattern supplied to be added to the song - not just the option to replace the whole song! This way you can separately play the various parts of the song: intro, verse, chorus, bridge etc, get appropriate drum patterns for each and add them all to the song one at a time..Version: 1.0.3

Needs updates bad since ios 14Crashes Auria pro and Cubasis 3 - rendering it a useless standalone drum app....i need a virtual drummer like garage band, which is why i got this...and i bought the metal pack too....hope i get refunded.Version: 1.5.12

Get nothing but feedbackDoesn’t work right on iPad..Version: 1.5.12

Very DisappointedI’m incredibly disappointed for several reasons. The first and most important reason is that it simply doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do. The app will not create or find a beat that comes anywhere close to what I’m playing. It changes the tempo, time signature, etc. there is an immense amount of static and other noise while playing and the user interface is very sloppy and not friendly at all. Overall, I’m very disappointed with this and even more upset that I paid for it..Version: 1.5.8

Needs work.I was a beta tester. Coming along but a few things. On learning guitar function is good. But it needs to be a way to reset ai to start over again instead of closing the whole app out. All the midi needs to be drag and drop even in the AI part. The bottom off the screen hides the add to editor function. Also for export there needs to be more options. Like google drive, or even save to iPad. Just more ways to save and send. Also it is hard to find where you can make the drum Set more or less aggressive. I found it at first but I lost it and couldn't find it. Just make that an easy feature. This is a great idea. I know you guys listen and I know this will be just as good as all you products..Version: 1.0.2

Just CrashThe app just crash always, poor customer service!.Version: 1.5.12

NO LONGER WORKSId give you nothing if i could 👿👿👿👿 How about you refund us all our money, this no longer works period ! It hasnt done so for at least two years at least Worse still, it was worth having once !.Version: 1.5.13

Fix bug pleasePlease update your apps. Bass drum on funk distort once in a while!!!.Version: 1.5.12

Much potential, little deliveryThe good: it's stable on my iPad Air 2. The bad: this app serves no practical purpose aside from a fancy looking practice tool. There is no way to transfer any song that you've pieced together from its limited grooves to a iOS or computer based daw other than a single two track mix with no mixing options. I sure hope this app sees some extensive feature additions soon..Version: 1.0

Fixed? I hopeThe app had a horrible static like sound at first but I deleted the app and reinstalled it….so far sounds great 🤷‍♂️ Edit~ so yeah woke up my iPad started to play with some more beats and the staticky sound is back so 🤷‍♂️.Version: 1.5.12

Tempo BPM is offThere seems to be a bug in the tempo section. Type in the exact tempo and it doesn’t line up with several metronomes I’ve used to test it out. This makes it completely useless for me. If customer support can fix this I’d very much appreciate it as I’ve spent money on this.Version: 1.5.12

Missing the freedom of a sequencerI so much want to use these drums in my projects and my clients projects but without a sequencer we are somewhat limited. Please incorporate one and I guarantee this app will be one of the best. Thanks..Version: 1.5.8

I expected more from thisIs way too limiting. The beats can’t be modified, the drums sound terrible for being 2020. They have a toy-ish tone that ruins the whole experience, not even the purchasable presets work. I expected something closer to EZ Drummer, which I guess it was the goal of the developers of this app. But so far is such a waste of money and data..Version: 1.5.12

Kind of junkJust static. Even reinstalled it. Nothing but static, even tried headphones, same result no drums just static..Version: 1.5.13

NopeSnap crackle pop. Cool idea, poor execution. Crackles. I would love to input my own samples or use a midi roll to plot drum hits but cant figure ththat out. Do not like. Please refund me..Version: 1.5.8

No Bluetooth?!!XD could be basis of practice/backing tracks, but no Bluetooth makes it limited. Playing back thru iPad speakers is a joke, when should be able to hear via my PA like every other software. And for some reason, Indie Rock add-on doesn’t show up in Templates, yet Classic Rock did. Needs some more fine tuning..Version: 1.5.12

IssuesIt’s Not quite there yet. I have found many issues. Flaming or flanging out of phase of drum hits for one. No real sense of velocities in the playing, which makes for a very unrealistic drum track. I am disappointed in the app at this stage of its development. There’s many others out there now that are far more realistic sounding because of multi-samples, and velocities being implemented. They need to have that in this app ASAP. For the money I would have expected it be implemented already. Ghost notes etc. are non existent..Version: 1.5.8

Excessive Battery usageI had to delete the app. According to my iPad’s Battery usage indicators, X Drummer is using 57% because it’s audio is supposedly running in the background; however, I went into settings and ensured that it was off after I installed the app. The fix to that bug should definitely receive priority..Version: 1.5.8

Doesn’t work no soundJust purchased this app no sound seems drum kit not loading.Version: 1.5.12

Tempo never matches🤬I play something slower then it matches a 172 bpm beat? I’m using in app bias amp I see the signal of the guitar but beat never matches!! Junk!.Version: 1.5.8

DisappointedWhile I find the samples to be of good quality, this app needs serious development to make it worth the price paid for it. I'm on an iPad 4, and that may be part of the problem, but if it is, PG should note that in the description. This app is slow, full of static noise, even when just browsing samples and unusable with IAA/Jamup. Suggestion, make a trial/free version so people can test this on their devices without throwing cash into the app toilet. Good idea, bad reality - I'm uninstalling and writing off this too expensive app as a total loss..Version: 1.5.5

IntermittentWon’t work on iPad Air, installs but when you restart it it says that there are no matching packs, now loads packs but no audio output output fader has no effect, frozen spinning symbol bottom right, works on two other iPads I own but not on iPad Air running os 12.1.2.Version: 1.5.11

Updating the previous reviewMy 12 years old crushed Tabla (Indian Percussive instrument) contains much more depth and attack than these 8 bit samples! My apologies!.Version: 1.5.13

Not for musiciansIt’s designed to get you spending on in-app purchases. There is provision for creativity. There is no piano roll. Creating your own beats and editing existing beats is not possible. If you are looking for a drum app for creating your own music don’t waste your money here..Version: 1.5.12

Love the company!I have the Bias Amp stuff on ipad and pc and it’s so good! However, this app is broken. I can’t get it to do anything I want except play the kit with my fingers… when samples aren’t missing. Please just reconstruct the app over so whatever’s wrong is gone. Call it X drummer 2 even. A lot of work, but I’ll pay again I don’t care..Version: 1.5.13

Can not use at my production level. Recommended for beginners/novice recording artists.I have many Positive grid products that I’ve purchased over the last couple years that I’ve Ive upgraded to the max, and use religiously on a daily basis.... but in all honesty X-Drummer just doesn’t cut it for me, especially on the level I’m at. The sample quality I require for my level of work just isn’t there and it lacks many features I thought it would offer. For musicians out there looking to get a quick, basic jam going and/or any musicians new to the recording process that need to quickly produce and lay down some simple, pre-programmed drum patterns without having to invest hours/days/weeks learning the process for MIDI sequencing and everything else that goes with it. X-Drummer is a simple tool that any average musician can use whether it’s practicing, rough demoing, help with songwriting, etc. I do NOT, however, recommend X-Drummer if you work at a professional/advanced level because it does NOT offer the production value, sample quality, kit customization, app integration, audio support/formatting, or flexible work flow that professional engineers/techs would use as far as industry standards go. This app will work just fine for most home studio musicians, hobbyists, music students, etc. so I’d recommend it to them any day. As far as my take on it, I’d honestly appreciate a refund because simply put this doesn’t serve me any purpose. Id rather use that money use towards other tools, software, or other gear like amp/Efx packs in Bias 2/Bias FX or towards a down payment on the new Bias Guitar Mini which looks INCREDIBLE. Bias 2, Bias FX, Final Touch, all great.Version: 1.5.12

Unbelievably useless 🧠🧠🧠👎👎👎I was waiting for awhile for fix and correcting the obvious problems with this app.update after update but it seems to nobody noticed or ignored that the drum pad is useless.all over on the drum set are setting signs and icons that there is no way you play the drum and accidentally don’t hit the sitting sign . That is really unprofessional and ridiculous..Version: 1.5.5

Not goodThere is no feel in patterns, they all sound like each other..Version: 1.5.12

Not yet worth the hefty priceI wish I hadn't gotten excited and downloaded before researching better. AI only works through the microphone input on the app -- no interapp or audiobus inputs, nor importing recorded audio from another app through audio paste -- so no hope in adding beats to stuff you have recorded in a daw on the iPad. I sincerely want my money back..Version: 1.0.1

Just So SoI really wanted to like this app but it's just so so limited. No option to edit midi within app, some of the fills are just all over the place. Play to learn really is a gimmick as it just does a track regardless of whether you sing humpty dumpty or rock. Some of the samples cut out without decaying properly. I can't put my finger fully on it but it just seems half baked for the money. Maybe it will improve. I love Positive Grid otherwise but wish I could have a refund. Edit October 2019 Still very average and not usable. I'm guessing PG will abandon this for Spark or something. The funk beats and rythmns are atrocious. Clearly not programmed by a funk drummer or musician..Version: 1.5.12

This is a somewhat interesting metronomeIt sort of figures out what you’re playing. The tracks are all OK but you’re not going to write songs with this. You’ll get your timing a little tighter, which you could do with a metronome. This app is too expensive and it seems like they’d like to sell me more tracks but clicking the link Unlock All Tracks crashes the app. You can do better Positive Grid..Version: 1.5.0

Great Drum Synth, Horrible Song EditorThe Drum sounds on this app are the most realistic MIDI replications I have seen, so far. I love how easy it is to configure the drum sets. I have a drummer friend who has listened to my recordings and wondered who I worked with to record the drums. I also love the variety of different drum styles and music genres the app supplies. Each genre has several different full song options to use. The usage for browsing song styles and drum configurations is very intuitive. This app is SO much more powerful than GarageBand when it comes to configuring drums and choosing song styles. On top of that, you can export your song to MIDI to import into other apps, when compiling other parts of your song through other apps. For example, I import the drum line MIDI into Guitar Pro to help write the guitar sections. The app is strong enough of a drum synth that I am willing to put up with the below issues. If you are looking to simply put together a song piecing together the existing parts of a genre style or a combo of styles, the song editor will meet your basic needs. This will be an amazing app for you to use. The further you move away from that simplistic use case, you run into more major implementation inhibiting problems as you get more complicated. 1. When compiling a song, you can only move one segment at a time. So, say you remove a segment from the song, you can’t just fully delete that section, closing the gap that that section consumed. You have to go through, touch every segment further down the song, moving them back to fill that gap #TimeConsuming. This kind of functionality assumes you are going to get the song right the very first time. I’m sure you are able to pull that off... not me. 2. Moving song segments, as mentioned previously, is very obnoxious. It would be nice if you could zoom out and move segments from a macro view of the song, right? That would, at least, make some of the pain of the previous issue a little less annoying. But, when you are looking at the macro view and tap on a segment to move it, the default behavior is to resize the section, pushing every other segment around it further down the pipe. That means you have to zoom into every section far enough to make an accurate tap in between the large sizing bars on either side of the section. You cannot, then, zoom out to move that segment. You have to pull that segment all the way down the line to the target location. 3. Each section of a song is limited to one configuration for that bar length. For example, if you use a verse section that is 8 bars long, you can only configure your drum set to play one setup. If you want to build up the intensity over those 8 bars, you have to start piecing together different instances of that section. The problem with that is, you cannot duplicate more than one section at a time. So, if you want to take that verse section you’ve compiled and replicate it for the next verse, you have to duplicate each subsection of that verse separately. If you want to duplicate a segment that starts at the beginning of that section, it gracefully duplicates behind the first section pushing the rest of the song down that same length. Now, here is the great Easter egg in that process. If you decide to only use bars 5 & 6 of that 8 bar segment, the second you go to duplicate it, it acts as if you are duplicating bar 1-6 of that segment, pushing the rest of the song down 6 bars rather than the 2 bars you are actually using. This creates a gap of 4 bars in your song. 4. One other issue, outside of the Song Editor, that creates a ton of work arounds that prolong integration with other apps. The metronome on this app is WAY off. If you have it set to 90 BPM, you will actually be playing somewhere between 82-84 BPM when playing the song live. This problem extends to using IAA. When I tried to record the song straight into Cubasis or Auria, the beats were WAY off. To get around this, you have to export the song as a MIDI or WAV file, where, miraculously, the metronome is cured of its depression. The below are some of the nice to haves that would also make life a lot easier using this awesome app (no sarcasm, I promise). 1. First, I like to mix each drum on different tracks in my DAW. That allows me to EQ and compress differently for each part of the drum set. It would be great to have an option on the export functionality to create separate files for each drum part. Right now, I have to configure a drum set, then go through and create separate custom drum set configurations for each drum piece, with the volumes of the other pieces muted, then export them individually #NotADDCompliant. 2. It would be great to be able to import MIDI from other drum synths. This would override a lot of the pain of the Song Editor, if you don’t want to redesign it from the ground up. I would happily use another DAW style MIDI configuration tool to compile the song, then import it into the app to utilize all the strongest functionality that this app already provides. All that said, this app is well worth the purchase price necessary to get the greatest aspects of this application. I look forward to UI redevelopments to make this app much more valuable than the 5 star maximum allowed in these reviews..Version: 1.5.12

It’s promising, but...I have several positive grid apps, all are great. So when this was being released, I couldn’t wait. Finally it was released, and....it’s disappointing. Sounds aren’t bad, patterns aren’t very good in any style. It’s ok, updates are coming. Well, after several updates, this is the app that I use....almost never. If I could do it over, I would not purchase this app. I wouldn’t have it on my iPad even if it was free. It may be useful in very limited situations, but there are far better apps available..Version: 1.5.8

DisappointingI bought this at full price because I like and have all of the company’s amps and fx. It came with a very limited selection of drums for the price. The sounds are pretty good. Now I see that they are selling new content instead of upgrading the content for customers which they had talked about. Definitely one of my more disappointing purchases..Version: 1.5.1

PromisingThis app is fun to use and fairly straightforward for putting together ideas for drum patterns. Desperately needs integration with the likes of Bias guitar tones and programmes like cubasis so that you can actually record and transfer ideas easily into a project. Some way of loading an audio file with pre-recorded guitars as an example so that you can place in the drum patters and shorten/lengthen or edit would also be useful. A good app but ATM limited by lack of integration..Version: 1.0.1

Free? This app is worthless Even for free it is a ripoff!.Version: 1.5.8

Very irritatingIt was working fine but then all of a sudden there’s tones of static on all drum sounds!! Please fix!.Version: 1.5.8

CrashThis app is crashing so much that it is not useable. And my iPad is not the issue as it works 100%..Version: 1.5.8

Beta? Work in progress? Update-Just got worse.Decided to finally pull the trigger on this app even though I was aware from reviews of its shortcomings. I'm a guitar player and hate writing drum tracks, so being able to quickly come up with a beat to jam to is great. For the most part it does a decent job, the Ai doesn't always get it right. Sounds ok, not great. Same velocity on every hit like a robot. There's too many things in my wish list to type here. Number 1. Needs a mixer for each piece of kit, 18" crash is too loud, I could go on and on. It's also a buggy program, crashed a few times in a couple of hours of use and sometimes it's unresponsive when touching the screen. Everyone wants an EZ drummer for iPad, this could be it in the future but it's a long way off. With enough updates and fixes this could be great instead of just looking great. For the price this should perform better. Keep them updates coming Positive Grid and you'll have a winner, at the moment your not even in the medals. Update-Positive grid shows its true colours with latest update. They have introduced IAP's and there is still no mixer. I will not be spending another penny on this regrettable purchase, don't buy into this con from this greedy company. There are much better options..Version: 1.5.0

Doesn’t workThis app would be very good if it worked it is complete crap keeps crashing complete waste of money you tech guys need to sort it out quick! Why are you releasing apps that don’t work complete waste of money utter crap!.Version: 1.5.2

TrashRefund please..Version: 1.5.12

Needs work...UPDATE: Upgraded to the new 2017 iPad with iOS 10.3.1 and app will no longer launch. UPDATE 2: 1.0.1 App update fixed the launch issue. I have to agree with the other reviewer. This app isn't complete, and is quite underwhelming. Given the company that is developing it, I have faith it will be great one day, but as it stands, it is an incomplete product and overpriced for what you get compared to more mature offerings. I really hope they have more in store for this app, because it is a great concept! It could have used more development before asking people to pay $10 for it, though!.Version: 1.0.1

Good but....Right I really love this app it is very useful for me being more of a portable guitarist than anything else but sometimes I would press on genre that I play which is metal and no matter what riff I play I keep getting the same drum beats over and over again just a different tempo and I have bought the heavy metal pack and I have the default metal arrangements that it comes with but it’s just annoying how no matter what kind of metal riff I play I get the same drum arrangements if this is a bug it needs fixing ASAP as I love this app it’s handy to be able to just plug my guitar into my iPad and open the app and play the riff I have just wrote and have a instant drum track for that riff but at the moment it’s not what I’m enjoying using because of this issue. I also think that some features in the app that would make it even better is having the ability to record your own drum beats using the your own custom drum kit I know this apps main purpose is to give you an instant drum track depending on what you play on the guitar but I would love to be able to play a drum beat I have in my head and turn it into a reality using this app. Another feature that would be cool is having the ability to fully customise the drum track from editing the grooves like you can in midi based programs..Version: 1.5.12

Crap - complete waste of £20!Totally un-intuitive, half the buttons don’t work If a search is selected then you can’t get out of it because the close button doesn’t work.Version: 1.0.4
