ForScore for Negative User Reviews

Good, but…The app is excellent for keeping all my music in one place and great for annotating etc. However… for an app with almost everything I need… why, when paying for a subscription is it so complicated to migrate my music to another device? On such a sophisticated piece of software, surely this should be automatic or at least a one-step process without the need to use up valuable iCloud space. Sort this out and it will go from a 3 star app to a 5 star app..Version: 13.0.5

No longer works for meI used to love ForScore and got an iPad Pro specially for use with it. I found the ability to add my own symbols when editing particularly useful. However, I play electronic percussion and page turns can be challenging, so I set it up to do page turns triggered by MIDI form a trigger pad on my kit. Quite niche, I know, but my feet are too busy for a Bluetooth foot switch and reaching over the kit to turn the page isn’t an option. This worked great for a while, then there was an update and it hasn’t worked since. I can program it for the page turn but it doesn’t work when I’m in a score. I reported it twice and there have been more updates since, but no acknowledgement and no fix. This is a deal breaker for me, so I’ve had to go over to Newzik. I still like ForScore otherwise, but if I can’t use it when playing live it’s not much use to me. If you don’t need this feature I’m sure it’s still great..Version: 13.1.5

Issues crashing with darkroomJust spent an hour taking pictures of an opera vocal score I own, cropping them individually and editing each page’s colour individually. As trying to multi edit crashed. After that hour, it doesn’t save, and instead crashes every time. Pretty tired, frustrated and wasted a huge chunk of my time..Version: 10.5.3

CrashCrashes when tapping “rearrange”.Version: 13.0

Crashed during every search.I bought this to use with my Ukulele pdfs and a foot pedal. I have a large PDF from Jims songbook. First I noticed the app does not search across multiple PFF. But worst of all it crashes when searching in this large file. This renders it in usable for me. Such a shame. Refund request next..Version: 11.1.5

Besoin d’un mode d’emploiPour ne pas perdre de temps inutilement et sourtout mes nouveaux scans, j’ai besoin d’un guide..Version: 14.1.3

BuggyWonderful features but buggy. Several times it’s erased my full repertoire and markings, so now I create a new archive on a daily basis. Limited support from designers who simply said that this was “a known bug” as the Mac version hadn’t been updated to the iPad version. They seem more focused on rolling out new features than making what exists completely reliable..Version: 14.0.2

Not intuitiveLook I get why everyone is using this app. But I have to say that I have found this app very frustrating to learn to use. Basic things like figuring out how to pull up the “navigation bar” are very difficulty for me to figure out. I searched the documentation over and over trying to figure out what gesture would pull up the navigation bar and found nothing aside from an old blog post from the developer making fun of people who don’t know about long taps (fyi, long taps don’t bring up the navigation bar). I eventually resorted to randomly poking the screen over and over until I got to settings at which point I was able assign my own gestures. I also find the process of importing pdfs to be needlessly laborious and again not clearly explained in the documentation. I guess if I am to use this for gigs I will need to reserve a couple hours of prep time to scream at the app while I desperately try to execute basic functions. And before snide developers dismiss my comment as coming from some techno-phobe… I work with computers all day long and am no stranger to figuring out how to do things..Version: 13.1.5

Annotations erase out of nowhereI really like this app as it is quite easy to use. The only problem I have with it is when it erases hours of work annotating scores. This has happened to me twice in the past two days where I have annotated a full pages work and it completely erased itself and there is no apparent way for me to get my work back. Very deceiving… Please do something to fix this !.Version: 14.1.3

ImpossibleInstructions are poor; links are given that don’t take you where they are suggested they will. Menu options supplied that aren’t available. Cannot import any thing into this app; whether PDF or from Dropbox..Version: 13.1.7

Bring back the dashboard buttonThe latest update is disappointing. I recommend this app to a lot of people but the latest update removed genuinely useful features and replaced them with features you may set once, if ever. Before I was able to configure a bit for the dashboard that was visible at all times which displayed the progress of my goals. Now this has been replaced with a display setting button which I have never needed to use and certainly doesn’t need prime UI real estate. I’m also perplexed why they dashboard statistics are limited to 90 days. The data that is collected must be insignificant in size compared to the storage of the actual scores themselves. And processing more data, assuming they are using an SQLite database, wouldn’t be any more demanding for the app. I would have loved to have tracked exactly how long I have spent practicing since I started learning the piano, but sadly, I can’t for no good reason. But for the last 90 days I’m golden..Version: 13.0

Page goes blank during performanceI have been using Forscore for the past 5 years as a professional musician and it has been very reliable until the last year, pages will suddenly go blank during performance leaving only my annotations, this is absolutely a horrific experience for anyone who performs classical music professionally. Is there a reason why this happens? Could Forscore fix this? Please don’t be the reason that makes me go back to paper sheet music..Version: 14.0.3

Unreliable for public performanceI have used forScore for years — I use the pro version with face gestures to turn pages. As a professional musician, it is one of the most important apps on my iPad. There are many advantages that we are all aware of. I would like to share the biggest disadvantage (a bug) which makes forScore unreliable for public performance. Occasionally (roughly once a week, or a few times a month), a score will disappear into a plain white screen with nothing visible except the annotations. It always happens at page turns — usually the first, but sometimes in the middle of a piece. This first happened to me in a public performance two years ago and I no longer use my iPad for public performances, I simply don’t trust the software. I have spoken to three friends who have experienced the same issue, which has not been resolved in two years worth of updates. Do not trust this app for public performance, unless you are able to continue playing from memory if your score disappears, or you are willing to accept the risk of embarrassment! I have reported this issue and hope that my trust in this app can one day be restored..Version: 13.1.5

GoodAt first this app seems expensive for $30. But after getting it, the uses for it become quite evident. This is definitely a major upgrade from using paper scores. It is very helpful for musicians and has most features you might want, while being laid out very clearly, making it very easy to navigate. Would recommend..Version: 14.0.3

Highlighter featurePlease give us a proper highlighter feature. The one that doesn't make black texts/notes looks smudge..Version: 14.0.3

I absolutely love forScore but I need it to be more accessibleI have low vision and bought forScore because of the reflow feature. I love where it’s going but at the moment it needs some work to be accessible to me. If, in future, you are able to improve the app to better handle repeated sections and first and second endings, whilst in reflow, I would be forever grateful. Likewise, if I was able to tell the system where a bar was and use a foot pedal every number of bars to move through the music (rather than being a continues stream), it would be life changing. Thank you for considering partially sighted musicians in the creation of this app. I hope these insights are helpful..Version: 12.0.10

Fix this update!Latest update is TERRIBLE. App constantly hangs, drops pages, runs out of memory..Version: 13.1.1

Bugs with performance modeI’ve been using this app for ages and it used to be great. But since a recent update, turning pages has become seriously hit & miss. Sometimes it pages backwards, sometimes it goes into edit mode. I can’t rely on it for performance anymore..Version: 13.0.4

Was goodThis was a great app. However, for a long time too many glitches have taken away its features. Everytime I try to access settings or any if the tools up pops the music directly blocking access to every tool eg metronome and sharing. It's really disappointing.Version: 13.0.4

Love it, but it fix the audio issueThis is a fantastic app for organizing my scores and as a tool for teaching. It has made it so easy to reduce the clutter of my musical life. I’m giving a low rating because of the issues linking audio to the scores. The developer claims that this is forbidden by apple, yet apps like amazing slow downer or others can do this with no issues, so it seems the problem is actually on the part of ForScores development team. These other app allow me to open audio from apple music and slow it down, speed it up, etc. the only limitations are that the protected files from Apple Music cannot be repitched. I’m certain there is a solution to this problem. Please fix it because it is a genius idea to include that feature within ForScore…if only it actually worked….Version: 13.0.5

Getting better, but still...Some features are removed under updates. I understand that apple is not interested in making convenience for everyone, but i’ve enjoyed ftp function a lot. If someone can possibly steal my scores by cracking my home or work wifi, i’ll buy that guy a bottle of wine. Removing functions is pretty silly. But, it is as it is. Thank you for (finally!!) adding option to annotate the score in 2-page layout..Version: 12.0.5

Bad quality in 2023This was a great app in its heyday, but now it has too many unfixed bugs that were added in v13 and v14. It’s becoming unworkable, even with Pro. Getting sick of losing my work and setlists due to sync bugs. Getting sick of poor usability, especially for Apple Pencil annotations and for singing with audio accompaniment tracks..Version: 14.0.1

The app needs to get betterI downloaded this app yesterday and today I’ve downloaded two pieces of music but I cannot put them on this app it will not recognise the one drive when he’s got a security lock on it I don’t know why you can’t just have to use the security lock when you’re using the app and download into the OneDrive so it knows it doesn’t work from dropbox so perhaps consider to use if you’re downloading the music downloads direct onto the app and not into everywhere else so perhaps there is an update make it a little bit more easier to move music Trying to have a security lock on it so no one else can access it and if there is a security lock on another app try and work with the app so you can use the security lock rather than having to disable it and then re-enable it and then if you wanna use again you got disable it for 1499 I expect it to be a bit more better and easier to use and probably a lot more friendlier for dyslexic people.Version: 11.2.6

Honestly worth more than $20Update: Removed 2 stars because there seems to be a common issues with annotations missing or merging. This has been going on since September with the 13.1 update (I believe). Hopefully, this post can get some attention. Beides the major bugs, the app is still great. I was a bit hesitant when I saw the $20 price tag at first. This is taking into consideration that I’ve never payed for an app in the past. However, after seeing a few friends with it and trying it myself, I’m extremely satisfied with the features this app presents. I’m able to share my music with other people and all of my IOS devices, organize and easily notate my music, and add audio and vocal tracks to the bottom of the score. Obviously, there’s more available features than that, but I found these to be the most beneficial to me in the long run..Version: 13.1.6

Not very user friendlyCan’t access the main screen from my iPad when I am looking at the sheet music. Also the page turning is very awkward. Disappointed in this app..Version: 14.0.2

I used to love this app but…I am a professional concert pianist who uses forScore on two iPads coupled together to perform with. Since I started using this app aprox. 4 years ago, when I found it to be wonderful, it has become less functional. When issues arise they take longer and longer to get fixed. But my real issue is with the suposedly "Pro" level of support that I am paying good money for. These days, when I have a problem, unless I’m really, really stuck, I don’t bother trying to contact forScore because I know I won’t get an answer. I’m still waiting for an answer to my last email sent on 2022-12-22! There is something wrong with this picture.Version: 14.0.3

Great app but .....The app recently started ‘refreshing’ especially during times when I haven’t opened it for, say, hours. Instead of going straight to the page I had stopped in the last time I used it it suddenly refreshes into a page with ‘basic functions’ like a first time tutorial. This gets frustrating if I have to get at a score during a performance or during teaching. Also it seems to crash a bit more often. Happened when I upgraded, which was the version before THIS latest update you have. Does it have a maximum limit as to data that can be stored? I had almost 2 thousand scores - I am using an ipad with 128 GB storage - and like 90 percent were GONE when I tried to re download the app because of these issues. Hopefully you can understand how I felt when that happened Hoping you can fix this. Otherwise I’d have given five stars without blinking,.Version: 12.1

ForScore 13 for Mac OS not available everywhereVersion 13 doesn’t appear in the Australian Mac OS store, so it’s impossible to take advantage of cloud syncing. Not impressed..Version: 13.0.1

FustratingUsed to be great when it synced with Microsoft OneDrive but unfortunately no longer able to do this. Forscore blame Microsoft, Microsoft blame Apple and Apple blame Microsoft and after many online chats to try and sort it out with all three of them I'm still unable to sync to OneDrive. Looking for an alternative unfortunately..Version: 12.1

Errors in copying scores to another deviceI have been with ForScore from the very beginning and in fact I even pay for the pro version that I feel makes very little difference. I would say it has been a 5 star app up til recently. I am a professional concert pianists that works with two iPads that I pass my Scores back and forth after adding fingerings and notes to either students or myself. Airdrop has always been the fastest way and had been flawless until the last month or so. Now, every time and every score I send that has kept the annotations from previous versions now automatically takes random measures from a previous section and randomly inserts into another page. Not whole pages but lines here and there. So I’ll be playing along and all of a sudden a Line from a different piece in the same score will appear and Then the next line will be the correct piece again. Very frustrating. Having the pro app is suppose to get support. It took 10 days for a response and then when i responded to the non answer I got no more responses. I think it’s time to look elsewhere or just play from my purchased henle app which has its own annotating frustrations. I love all the new features but I rarely use them. How about good old reliability? Frustrated musician. Sure Never been frustrated By a score before!!!!!.Version: 13.0.4

Disappointed with updateI have used this app for a long time and found it really useful and would have given it 5 stars until this latest update. The Perform function has being removed which has made turning the pages unreliable. I don’t like the way it exits the perform function when you tap the screen. It slows down turning the page if you accidentally tap the screen too hard and has now made it very difficult to use as I was so used to how it was before..Version: 13.0.1

Incredibly buggy and unreliableI am a full time music student at university, I practice piano five hours every day and I’m giving up on forScore ForScore crashes almost every day on my iPad, and is really laggy and slow to load my scores and turn pages. Really bad for an app that’s designed for load scores and turn pages. ForScore Cue is laughable. I have two 12.9 inch iPad pros that I bought so I could have dual pages, but one out of two times I try to connect my second iPad, it A: doesn’t show a connect prompt, or B: Shows a blank page on the cue iPad. Slow, unsynced turning is true 90% of the time. I would NEVER rely on this for a performance. My annotations straight out do not save sometimes. I can recall more than once where I have spent 20 minutes annotating fingerings for my score just for it to disappear. Infuriating. My scores will also uncrop spontaneously and ruin my fingerings, depositioning them with no way to fix. I subscribed to forScore pro, so I could get the priority support. When I inform them of these bugs they say something like “we’ve been aware and we’re working on fixing it” and they never fix it. I really am upset because I really want to use forScore but It’s just too buggy and unreliable at this point for me to risk my degree on..Version: 13.1.7

ReviewI bought this app after reading great reviews. Tools don’t display, share facility won’t work. Import facility worked once but didn’t work again. I tried to get support but it was never available. Waste of money..Version: 11.0.4

Good for basic page turning, terrible for saving annotations. If you are planning on using this app as just a substitute for physical sheet music, this is a great app. For those that seek to annotate, mark their music, etc. this app has a very annoying bug that has yet to be fixed as of the most recent version/update. I’ll spend roughly half an hour annotating a score on two or three layers and upon selecting “done” it all disappears. It comes back sometimes when I go back into the editing phase but disappears again when I’m “done”. I’ve had another bug that randomly merges annotations from multiple layers into one layer as well as moving annotations completely from one page to another. In short, if you want to just turn pages and save music electronically, this app is perfect. If you want to utilize any of it’s other annotative functions, simply don’t waste your time..Version: 13.1.5

Beware of this update. Don’t do it if you’re a serious user. Critical issues…Several critical bugs that have cost me hours of non-value added work. I am a professional that uses forScore on an IPad Pro connected to a Korg Kronos. Here are the issues: 1 - All pages of scores (created on versions earlier than the update) that have been both cropped and manually marked up are a mess. The markup layer no longer aligns with the underlying PDF as the crop characteristics of the PDF layer are gone. Made many pages with manually added notes completely useless. This has created hours of work for me to fix scores I need to use for gigs. 2 - The sending of midi program changes is broken. When the iPad is connected to a synth, sending program changes from forScore crashes the forScore app (completely quits). This happens with both midi embedded in the score as well as midi buttons. Also, when the iPad is connected to a synth changing programs directly for the synth also crashes the app. These crashes don’t happen every time, but it always will crash on the 1st or second or third or fourth etc. It always will crash. Completely unreliable for any performances. This was a nice feature that is now useless. 3 - Navigation buttons created on an earlier version - pressing these buttons on a score (i.e. to back to page 1) causes an immediate app crash..Version: 14.0.1

Great but needs polishingThis might be the best sheet music/all round useful music out there. However compared to the rest of the iPadOS ecosystem it feels like it needs a bit of work to bring it to a premium state. A lot of the features are hidden behind menus, only just discovered it has a piano feature after 6 months of use - ui has a low discoverability. If you want to have one app that does has all your music and does it all, this is for you, I just wish it were a bit more intuitive to use..Version: 13.1.7

Switching pagesI wish switching pages while on half page mode would be as easy as full page. App is not cheap!.Version: 14.1.3

Cannot open since updateThe app will not open/load anymore.Version: 12.1

No Support and pages turn by themselvesThe app can do a lot, but when it comes to reliability, they need to do some serious work. There is something that causes pages to turn without touching the screen. It can be 1-4 pages in quick succession. It’s nerve wracking in the middle of a performance to keep track of pages and still be able to engage an audience. I put in a support ticket and got a fairly quick response with a couple of questions about the PDFs I was using and I responded quickly. More than a month and several follow-ups later, still no response—nothing. I even have the PRO subscription, so thought I’d get at least a some sort of response from support. Can’t say I can suggest the app for performance. Definitely don’t go with the pro subscription, since it basically gets you nothing more useful than the basic app..Version: 14.0.3

Face gesture page turns don't workThis has got even worse with the latest update. Now each time you start it, it boots up with a set of instruction pages that you have to wade through before you can start using it. Don't even think of using this app for a performance or exam, you'll look ridiculous as you try in vain to get through these pages, and the audience/conductor/fellow musicians/examiner are going to be very frustrated with you. Stressful - the last thing you need! I upgraded to the paid version for this feature, but it's useless and I want to warn others. It a neat idea, which works whilst you're in the settings menu. But as soon as you're playing something for real, it will systematically fail, both with the turning-the-head setting and the mouth setting. Mostly it simply fails to recognise either, or it waits 5 seconds and then turns 2-4 pages at once. Don't upgrade for this reason. I have a Bluetooth Donner pedal for the same thing, which similarly doesn't work, and was hoping Forscore's face gesture feature would finally be the answer - it isn't..Version: 13.0.4

Some stuff should be simplerI’m new to it and Can’t figure out how to close individual scores ;-\ nor how to create folders (not setlists).Version: 14.0.3

Frustrating/Persistent Glitch despite iOS and app updatesI have always loved this app. I have always used it with my 1st generation iPad Pro but, for the last couple of months, I have been having troubling issues with forScore. The single page turns are starting to lag a lot and when I use half page turns and jump around within a set list, I will turn half a page and the following half page will show the next chart instead of the next page. To get it to go away, I need to tap forward once more (this allows the full following page to display) and tap back once (so I can go back to where I initially intended to be). This is unacceptable to use during a performance because it is causing me to make mistakes and miss entrances. Please have a look into this and find a way to fix it. My iPad is old but it is still in perfectly usable condition and I don’t imagine that should affect how the software works. As much as I would like to avoid it, I have to leave my rating at 2 stars until this problem is resolved..Version: 14.0.1

Keeps freezing in edit mode!Used to work perfectly! Update has made thing so slow and glitchy..Version: 11.0.1

DisappointingPretty disappointed. After reading great reviews was expecting a lot from this 25$ app… pretty underwhelming, not intuitive and lags on my brand new iPad….Version: 14.1.1

Good but problematicForScore is certainly the best music reader I’ve used in terms of functionality. It is easy to upload music to the app and view your music as well as make your own set lists. The other features is where the problems are. The metronome function is cool and the annotations with Apple Pencil are fantastic, but other useful features and actually navigating the application leave much to be desired. Accessing an app’s settings menu shouldn’t require a google search to figure it out. Likewise, instructions for using other features such as links have ambiguous instructions that force you to use trial and error to figure out. Trying to access your library isn’t as easy as tapping a link that says “Library”; same goes for your set lists. There’s also the option to back up your library and set lists, but it’s not easy as allowing it to access your iCloud Drive account like you might when you first launch Pages or something. Speaking of backing everything up, the feature is mislabeled as “Services”. The backup section doesn’t properly backup your files and allow to easily restore. So, like the title says, the app is good, but also has a list of problems and usability/interface issues that can ward off new users..Version: 10.5.2

Not reliableDo not buy this app if you have the update of iOS 14 or more as it’s not compatible with the latest version of for score. Had For Score for 2 years, it was always good until last update and now it is lagging for ever and can simply not work with it anymore. I had to buy another app to be able to work as a musician in orchestras. Cause of the lack of update from For Score, the page turns are not reliable, has at least 3 seconds delay for simple tasks as writing, zoom in and out. Over all pretty disappointed that I have to wait for an actual update to have the chance of using it again. I just cannot work with it anymore..Version: 14.1.2

Problem resolved. The app on my device had a problem with crashing, which forced me to reinstall. It's now working perfectly. The support from the developers was amazing. Fingers crossed, here's to many more years of flawless work with this app..Version: 10.2.6

Ok, Could be great. An ok basic app with missing obvious features. The simplest of them would be the ability to easily invert display settings so that black text over white background could be inverted to white text over black background. Easy auto scroll per song, programmed using the Bluetooth pedal, editable chord labels with instant transpose for guitar or other instruments (capo transpose for second guitar as an exemple). With those features, it would turn into a great app. It’s great for scores but lacking for a band setting or typical solo bar performer..Version: 13.0.5

Loved this app but now unreliableI have loved this app over the years, use it every day for work but since the last couple of updates, it has become very unreliable….will be performing and will turn the page to a blank screen. It happens so often that I will no longer use it for performance. Wish I’d never updated it..Version: 14.0.3

New icon looks terribleI just want to point out after all these years using the app that the new app icon looks horrendous. It looks completely out of place from the rest of Apples design and looks like someone pieced two random symbols together. Don’t fix it if it’s not broken. The previous one at least looks elegant..Version: 14.0.2

Annotations all moved around after updateAfter the most recent update, all my annotations got moved around on the page. This includes hours and hours of translations, fingerings, etc. Absolutely UNACCEPTABLE and my scores are now useless.Version: 14.1.2

Great App, but Syncing songs isn’t working.ForScore is a great app for any level and any player, especially for people (like myself) who have many songs. However I have two concerns. 1. The sync isn’t working. I use forScore on multiple devices, but the songs do not sync with other devices linked with the same account. This is troublesome because when trying to use my phone or more portable device than my IPad, it doesn’t work, and I have to take the pictures one by one to get all of the pieces on each device. 2. The second problem is the flipping page feature. I know the app calibrates to one side or the other by tapping on the right or left side, but I think there needs to be a heightened sensitivity setting. The reason for this is because I play at recitals and in public areas often. I have played at some mini concerts until COVID 19 came around. With the page not flipping when I tap it, IT MESSES UP MY PERFORMANCE. I either have to modify the piece to make it like I didn’t make a mistake, or I have to pause awkwardly mid performance. This has happened to me many times, and I cannot stand mistakes in public performances. It makes me look like an inexperienced rookie playing. I can understand if I tap once and it doesn’t turn and it turns the second time But when I am button mashing the screen and it still doesn’t respond, that is a problem. Fix these issues, and I’ll give your stars back..Version: 11.2.2

Not user friendly. Not user friendly at all. The control panel is only sometimes available, no way to learn how to use it as I can’t get to any settings panel. Which means I also can’t cancel a subscription or deal with deleting an account. Frustrating..Version: 14.1.3
