Butterfly iQ — Ultrasound for Negative User Reviews

Not made for remote useI want to start off by saying I really like this product and the quality of images is what I expected from the promotional materials. What I am very disappointed with is the customer service and specifically the inability to communicate with someone who takes the time to understand the issues I am having with the product. The butterfly is marketed amongst other things as a tool that can be taken anywhere (reference global health and rural links on the website). Unfortunately, as anyone who works in these environments will tell you, often internet is limited and in the case where the software crashes or a user is inexplicably logged out there is no way to use the tool until one is connected back to the internet. Which in some cases can be days. The tool is then completely useless in the interm. Most commercial machines I have used have an option to be used in emergency mode without logging in. Alternatively, a known user should be able to log back into the software locally even without internet. If they need to revalidate once connected to the internet to upload/exchange data that would be fine. But a user should never be dependent on intent access to log into the software in order to use the probe. I tried to explain this point to multiple customer services reps- who then replied with links telling me to connect to the intent and disconnect. Not very helpful if there is no internet available in the first place. I am giving a one star rating as although the product is very well designed, being periodically kicked out by the software and then being unable to log in without immediate access to the internet means the butterfly is not a reliable tool for me to use where I work. Will gladly change to a much higher rating if/when this issues is addressed..Version: 2.10.1

Misleading sales forceI purchased this unit over a year ago and made it clear that I had no interest whatsoever in using their cloud storage. Nor did I need any updates, as the area of use & interest for this unit is very specific. I was told repeatedly that there was no need for me to purchase updates if I did not want additional capacity or cloud storage. Well now that the free cloud storage (which I have not used) is up the unit is virtually worthless. I cannot save images on my iPad as I could before. Completely misleading. If you want to buy the probe as a software as a service, that’s how they need to market it. I’m going to have to buy a new ultrasound from another provider. The images are fine, the company now that’s another story..Version: 1.28.2

Terrible Support and FunctionI’ve owned a Butterfly for about 2 years now. The probe recently began having issues and I’ve been working with support. Unfortunately, they only have a canned answer to restart your probe. If that doesn’t work, they request you buy a new probe at $1500 (not including a $500 annual membership). Poor products and worse support. I would recommend looking elsewhere if you’re interested in a bedside ultrasound..Version: 2.30.0

Too many obligatory updatesNeeds OB calculations for estimated gestational age. I work in Liberia and thought it would be a great overall diagnostic tool but twice have been blocked because the app stops working if it hasn’t been updated every thirty days. And I get no cellular data network or WiFi at the hospital I work at in a very rural area. So I have been blocked from providing care to patients because of this obligatory frequent update. I wish Butterfly could just tell about updates like other apps but still let you use the old app until you have a chance to update!.Version: 1.13.0

ImpracticalVery slow wireless charging. Requires an app with an account to use which means you can’t share it with others. Definitely not something you can just grab and use when you’re in a hurry, but perhaps a good toy for training sessions..Version: 2.7.0

No inter-device compatibility with iQAll the updates improve the iQ+ but the iQ users are left hanging. Still with no adapter option to iQ users. Some of us bought the previous version weeks before the iQ+ launch without any warning that a new model was going to launch with better compatibility. Just give us an expensive adapter to improve inter-devices compatibility. It shouldn’t be that hard for a company that promised to keep innovating the previous model..Version: 1.26.0

Unable to upload to cloud. The app and device work okay for just looking around. Resolution is not great. Good luck finding CBD with this. The main flaw is that I cannot upload to the cloud. It simply says failed to upload. I tried several different internet connections. I’m thinking that their servers are probably crap. I don’t think this product is ready for prime time..Version: 1.18.0

Extremely MisleadingI saw the write up about this in the App Store. I have has so many different ultrasounds for so many different things - a phlebotomist trying to find a vein to kidney stones and all sorts of other issues. Thought it oils be cool to be able to see my own ultrasounds. It is free O. Top of everything else. My iPhone can do LiDAR now, which I have used in my floodplain management, why not ultrasound. What they don’t tell you is you must purchase a noted device. Your phone is not the ultrasound as they imply. The needs to be made clear. And need a to be stated upfront..Version: 1.27.0

Bad image qualityFine for just looking around. Images are grainy and not the best. I’ve used several different handheld devices and all have better images for me. Also the device gets really hot after a few minutes. I probably wouldn’t buy again..Version: 1.22.0

Nice portable much room for improvement mostly in MSKGreat user friendly platform, would like to have a Bluetooth option for ease of carrying. But the biggest downfall is the MSK tendon definition gray scale is weak and ver difficult for diagnostics. If Butterfly can fix that this thing will be a gigantic game changer. Keep on improving and shatter the imaging playing field. As of now I will still need a bigger machine for nerve and MSK..Version: 1.8.0

Restricted in my countryI like the app but difficult to download it in my country and a message appears in the screen that not available in your region although my country is off OFAC in 2020 restricted list ..Version: 2.6.0

Warranty and performanceUnfortunately I found there’s no ability to extend warranty right after purchase of the device. And as I feared, it stopped working a year later at a time that I needed it to scan a patient . When it did work, the constant updates get in the way of using device when needed. I now have an expensive paperweight. Awaiting response from support- which sent a message that it may take days to reply..Version: 1.14.0

Good functionality but not durableGood probe, but has broken down twice after 3-6 months requiring a replacement.Version: 2.28.0
