KQ Dixie for Positive User Reviews

Amazing valueSounds great. Price is unreal for this type of instrument. And an infinite number of patches available on the web make this a must have..Version: 1.0.8

Good App but has some quirksGood app, UI is way too beige. it needs a dark mode update desperately, it syncs with hardware some of the time but that depends on the phase of the moon apparently. Sounds awesome and exactly like the volca fm’s / dx7. Good work by a solid dev.Version: 3.1.11

Ingenious and clever app. Simple and intuitive to understand too. This is a straightforward reproduction of the sounds of the DX7. In all honesty I finally understand how an FM synth works because of this app. I thought I understood FM synthesis, but I really do now, because of this app. I too would like to see ways to share my presets with others and hope that gets implemented in future updates. This is a no-brainer purchase and highly recommend..Version: 1.0.5

Love it so farA really accurate and easy to use DX7 emulator. Love the different themes and the layout, sound is excellent. MIDI mapping seems great too..Version: 2.4.3

Just get itAmazing for the price! I now have more presets available than I have time in my life to hear them all!.Version: 1.0.2

OMGHow can a mere 2.9mb be such a slice of heaven. This is the iOS ability ive been craving for a long time. I like to tweak presets rather than define from scratch & the import of fm7 files is what hooked me into this app. I see it essentially says all bets are off with x86 devices, but to be honest its working fine on my iPhone 5 and my iPad 4th gen... I love this, its easy access to decades of classic presets... ooo the tones 👌.Version: 2.0.5

Everything I wantedGreat app. Can load sysex files with iCloud support. You can map sliders and knobs from your midi controller to work in sliders and knobs within the app. The app crashed when I tried to load 5000 sysex files at once hahaha but was great in smaller amounts. Works great with GarageBand, you can press play and record GarageBand from within the KQ Dixie app. Nice work devs..Version: 2.2

Exceptional FM Synth App with great UX/UII was looking at the Volca FM, the Yamaha Reface DX... but now have found my perfect combination in KQ Dixie with the Alesis Q25 midi keyboard with full-size keys. I am new to FM synthesis, interested in sound creation and this app and it’s interface/interaction design is exceptional for learning and playing. Super intuitive to use, fun to play and great for learning FM synth..Version: 2.0.9

Very cool!Love the flat interface. Just show me what I need to know, no fluff..Version: 1.0.9

Finally - DX7 patches on iPad/iPhone!The discovery of this app has absolutely made my day! I own the excellent Korg Volca FM, which led me down the rabbit hole of exploring all things DX7 and FM synthesis-related. All you need to know about the DX7 is that there are THOUSANDS of interesting patches all over the web. Most of these were professionally programmed decades ago, and have just been floating around ever since. But until KQ Dixie came along, there was actually no way to PLAY a DX7 patch on iOS. There were apps that would store and send sysex (DX7) files to your Volca FM, but you couldn’t hear what the patch sounded like until it was on an external piece of hardware. That why KQ Dixie is so useful to me. Finally, I have a way to audition this content, identify patches I would like to have on my Volca, and even dabble in some light programming. As it turns out, however, KQ Dixie is a great instrument app in its own right. I really like the clean UI and easy access to the keyboard and all parameters. There are even some neat touches like on-board filters, overdrive, and delay effects. In fact, it’s so good, it might make more sense just to use this app within the iOS ecosystem, rather than capturing sound from an external synth. NOTE: This is a very early review, and there are some understandable bugs with v. 1.0 pertaining to importing .syx and .zip files. The developer is attentive to these, and at least one update has already been submitted. And, to top it all off, KQ Dixie functions as an AU instrument, which makes it infinitely useful in DAW’s which support that functionality, as well as other apps like AUM or Quantiloop that can house AU apps..Version: 1.0.1

Lovely designReally nice design. works great on an SE. I love the simple method of layering voices. super!.Version: 3.1.9

Nothing betterI don't say it's THE best but this app is in the top group. I don't consider any app as the best because there are a bunch of apps that have their place in that special place of excellence. One of the funniest things I saw today was a 4 star review for Kq Dixie. People use these reviews as a way to ask the developer for a feature, which is a terrible thing to do. Just send the guy an email. If everyone reviewed that way then when we look through the reviews for good apps, we would not be able to make a good decision based on the reviews. Think about what reviews are there for. It's to let others know if the app is worth buying, not as a way to convince the developer to add a feature that you want. Of course people are so selfish these days that they don't really care about anyone else..Version: 2.2.2

Great DX app, low resource usage, good for sequencing in DAWsI remember when the hardware DX was an object of lust and envy for many. The idea you could have one for £3.99 would have been absurd, yet here we are. There are literally thousands of free patch collections of powerful and distinctive sounds you can download and open in this marvellous little synth, for clear and distinct digital textures, bells, pianos, and even some thumping analog-y basses, as well as the usual bass guitar noises. There are some cool curated collections too, which eliminate the dross and duplication -search for ‘Dexed cart 1.0’. If I had a criticism it is that it is not easy to navigate the patch folder system, and I have yet to find a non messy way to save my own curated banks of sonic weirdness culled from the masses of bland 80s cheese on offer that you have to wade through to find the gems. And if I had a suggestion it would be to add in a patch randomiser/morpher function, as FM is still hard to program and a good ‘roll of the dice’ could at least give you a starter for 10 in creating your own sounds..Version: 2.0.4

Worth the Hype!Have been hearing about KQ DIXIE from friends and forums since I started using iOS to make music and now I get it. It’s highly usable with no bad presets at all! Lots of power under the hood as well with many parameters to toggle and dial in. Word on the street is the dev is going to be raising the price soon so glad I took the plunge on this very capable FM synth app..Version: 3.1.10

AwesomeGreat synth app. Can download and use sysex files from the interwebs which means there are literally h7ndreds of thousands of patches available. Well done devs..Version: 1.2.3

Mind BlownA real six-operator DX7 on your device. And one so easy to edit and program. And works inside so many other apps. Almost makes me want to get a real hardware DX7...almost..Version: 1.0.2

An absolute delight!I’m a big fan of both of the musical apps by this creator-absolutely essential applications at an overwhelmingly affordable price! The graphical interface is delightful! It sorta reminds me of old style cartoons- I enjoy returning to it. The sound design is about as intuitive as FM can get- very easy to navigate. And it sounds great! Also works as AU so I can control it with the Bram bro sequencer collection. Fantastic app and my thanks to the developer!.Version: 1.0.3

The first great iOS synth from 2018! We’ve waited for years for a proper DX7 emulation on iOSIn 2010, we got DXi, but instead of being a DX7 emulator, it is a TX81Z-based app with more waveforms and features. FM4 beat the sound of the DXi. The first 6 operator FM app we got was TF7, but it did not try to be DX7-compatible. Although Phasemaker and NFM are more like the DX7 (and have AU support!), it wasn’t until 2018 that we got a proper DX7 emulator from the same guy behind the hidden gem, KQ Mini Synth. Not only it has a good interface, but it also has a pleasant sound and is compatible with DX7 banks. You can even load zip files full of banks. The digital pantheon of iOS is almost complete! We now have a PPG, a Fairlight, a DX7, a CZ, a Prophet VS, an M1, and a Wavestation all on iOS! I really want a D50 on iOS, please Roland!.Version: 1.0.1

DX7 gateway drug — 5 Stars! This synth opened up the world of the DX7 to me. After playing around with DX7 patches in this app for a few months I liked the sounds so much I bought myself a Yamaha TX802. Now I upload patches to my TX802 with the same app. Worth every penny!.Version: 1.2.3

DX7 HeavenBrilliant FM synth. Great interface. Sounds superb. Patches galore on net. Low memory resource user!.Version: 1.0.1

Very very nice6 operator AU Extensive control of parameters Get it!.Version: 1.0.1

Love itI freakin love this, I have loaded it with DX 7 patches, absolutely awesome.Version: 1.1.6

Update the Preset Management SystemThis is the best FM synth for iOS for technical sound design. You have to learn how FM synthesis works in order to make patches though. I would give it 5 stars but figuring out how to manage the presets is a real pain. It can be done but you soon find yourself on the forums asking questions. This is too bad because this synth has access to the largest number of presets compared to any other synth in history. Please developer make the preset copying, saving and organizing much more user friendly!.Version: 1.1.1

Please helpI’ve just purchased this app and in the cart there is free downloadable sound files but when I select them nothing happens do I need to have audiobus for them to open and get extra sounds or am I just doing something wrong , thanks in advance for your help.Version: 2.4.3

So far, so good!Impressed by simplicity of use, managed to get 100s sound banks installed - that exposed only problem in interface I’d like changing straight away...... Instead of showing filepath for every single patch when browsing, change it so that folders are present for ease of use. Would be nice if full cut and paste could be added to the folder structure too. At present it would be impossible to compile a master library from selections made after auditioning from 1000s of patches. Other than that - a great FM app at a great price - thoroughly recommended..Version: 1.0.8

Really nice appHad an issue but developer helped me immediately. Nice sounds..Version: 2.4.1

DX7 baby!!This synth is just about perfect. It faithfully supports all the DX7 sounds that I love, has a clever interface and supports AU. I can’t as for any more than this. Well done!.Version: 1.0.3

This is the oneI’ve only had it for an hour and I’m already in love. Just what I needed to continue to learn 6 op FM synthesis and share my patches out. It really is a steal for this price..Version: 2.4.5

7 stars. Where is the 7?Awesome amazing app. Well worth the $$.Version: 1.0.2

Perfect emulation of the DX7Fantastic, truly fantastic. Even takes DX7 SysEx files too. Any chance of making this macOS compatible so I can use it as an AU in Logic Pro?.Version: 2.4.5

The hype is realBeautiful interface with incredibly deep MIDI configuration settings..Version: 3.0.4

Super DXWOW this app is amazing and quite ground-breaking for iOS with an incredible price at launch. A fully fledged AU, IAA and AudioBus enabled synth with the capability to load DX7 sysex files from the web. Easy peazy. It has MIDI in so can be played with an external keyboard and can even be used to edit a DX !!.Version: 1.0.1

Wonderful DX for the iPadThis is just what I have been waiting for someone to build. A straight forward 6 operator FM synth for the iPad. It sounds good and all the controls fit on one screen. There is also a very useful and quick Sysex file import facility to provide thousands of ready made presets. What makes it a 5-star app for me, is that the developer listens to his customers and keeps improving the app, instead of taking things away like many others (including the big companies) in this appstore. Being able to play velocity using the onscreen keyboard is one such noted improvement, as there are many times when one cannot use a separate MIDI touch sensitive keyboard to program and play it. Thanks to the dev for making a great app at a great price!.Version: 2.0.1

A Yammy DX7 synthesiser....For a great price! So much nostalgia in a good way (I was around then) sounds great! And so many possibilities.. (I understand 'dixie' is a cute reference to 'dx' 🙂) Nice control interface and the onscreen piano keyboard is great too, responsive and with a good way to navigate octaves with the bar above it. Trivial detail? Maybe but some synth apps seem to neglect it, making using their app harder than it need be.. Future request: be able to search patches with a text field or by type or such and then be able to favourite them into a list? There are so many patches once i grabbed one of the available dx web packs...Version: 2.2.4

Excellent app for FM files! There are literally thousands of DX7 patches available on the net and this app is superb at presenting them. After the last upgrade the sound disappeared but returns if you visit PARAM and use the reset button below the poly/mono mode button. A tiny glitch that doesn't spoil the 5* rating..Version: 1.1

80’s DX7 mojo is here, but this outstanding synth is capable of so much more.Yamaha’s DX7 digital synthesizer was EVERYWHERE in the 1980’s. It’s FM digital synthesis was capable of very unique sounds. Although because of the great difficulty programming the original hardware units, most everyone just used the presets. Those 32 original voices are here too, and have their charm, but the real draw to Dixie is that the thousands upon thousands of voices & patches created by DX7 users over the past 30 years are compatible with the app! Google DX7 patches (sysex format), download the patch or a .zip of patches, import into Dixie via the Files app. That easy. Plus if you want to create new custom patches, I’ve never seen an FM synth that made patch editing easier to grasp. There’s plenty of effects and controls are easy to read & interact with. This app could be 10x more expensive and it’d be well worth it. Highly recommended..Version: 1.0.9

Great FM SynthBest synth for iPad Perfectly does a DX7, which you can many presets for. Highly recommended!.Version: 2.3.5

DX7 on iPadI absolutely love this app! It allows you to have a “DX7” on your iPad, plus it supports AU so you can use it directly in a host app. It makes an awesome editor, especially for the Volca FM; Here’s why: it allows you to design a patch and hear it (unlike Patch Base). When you you import sysex files all operators are on (again, unlike Patch Base). But where it’s really great for the Volca FM is the inclusion of the Velocity slider where the mod wheel usually is. So you know EXACTLY how it will translate to the FM! If you want the slider controlling vibrato instead, you have that option by going to settings. It also uses next to no CPU, even on an iPad Air 1, so it runs very smoothly. My only complaint is that is desperately needs a manual explaining the utilities/ file management. I spent hours figuring out how to create a blank voice bank to store my custom patches to. I put a video on YouTube explaining the process. Search “Creating an Init Voice Bank in KQ Dixie”. I highly recommend this for FM synthesis enthusiasts..Version: 1.1.1

Timbres keep resettingFor some reason when I load a new patch I lose timbres from the previous patch, I used to be able to have a timbre on a from one patch, a timbre for b on another etc. now I change settings to say 5 timbres and as soon as I look at another patch it just reverts back to 1 timbre (timbre a).Version: 3.0.5

A steal for this priceSuch an amazing synth. Sounds awesome and you can find endless presets online ... wow. Definitely one of my new favourites.Version: 2.3

Dependable and Fun App!I am a unprofessional keyboardist who uses iOS soft synths exclusively in liveless performances and unkempt-trailerpark work. I am also a sound destroyer and contaminate all my own sounds.... Testing, testing, testing, sound check..Version: 2.3.1

So awesomeLove this synth. Would love a vst version!.Version: 2.4.4

Outstanding appI started with the fm 2 from audio kit which does sound good but it’s sample based and not fm. Therefore you cannot dump or import sysex. The dexed port for iOS is weak compared to this app so if you don’t know which one to get then get KQ, I also think it’s evil to charge for a free open source port that is weaker than the competition. Anyway I wanted an equivalent to the DX5 ( 2 Dx 7s) and this app lets you stack multiples of itself and use multitimbral modes. I mean what else can I say but outstanding. Fully compatible with sysex easy to import and export. Instead of buying a volca fm 2 I just downloaded the sysex and problem solved I saved $200..Version: 3.1.5
