✓ Dead serviceUpdate: One game released in the past year, social media seems to be a skeleton crew, their sales pitches of weekly releases are blatant lies now. It’s clear the service is dying and I wonder what will happen to the games on it. Ah well, it was good while it lasted. Original: The App Store has a long history of great games that have been lost to time. Either the dev has disappeared or greedily just abandoned their old work to chase the next trend without caring about their former customers. How ironic that now all those former greedy devs are now running back and interested in updating these games! GameClub preserves these classic games and updates them for modern devices. Every console has retro releases these days, and GameClub is like the iOS version of it. Whether you want to revisit your favorite games from the past, or want to see the history of iOS gaming for the first time, the reasonable subscription price gives you a ton of options and it is constantly updated, and this app also has lots of relevant articles and sorting options so you can find new games easily. Think of it as a compliment to Apple Arcade. The games are somewhat easier to get into and require less of a time commitment than the epic console-style games you’ll find in the arcade. ✓ Interesting idea but I hate the business modelI would consider a subscription, if it were more like Audible, Xbox Gold, or Humble choice. Give us a game to keep each month. Make me feel like my payment is giving me something, even if I don’t play every day. This subscription model just leaves me with a bad taste. It isn’t even a matter of your price. You would need an enormous catalog that includes exclusive AAA titles for me to consider any monthly fee. As it stands I don’t even want to give your catalog a fair chance. ✓ Noble cause, but the subscription ruins it allI love the fact that GameClub is reviving these old games, but the subscription model is NOT the way to do it. Of course I’m in no position to judge the company’s business decision. The company probably thinks the subscription is going to make them more money in the long run, and they are probably right. What I’d argue is that using the subscription model defeats the very purpose of GameClub, which is to revive and preserve old games that no longer function on new devices. Having a subscription means the games will only function if GameClub is around. What will happen if it goes under? It will inevitably take all the game it “revived” with it. How exactly is this preserving the games? If the company really is interested in preserving the games, they will give us the option of buying individual games outright. I’d rather pay $50 per game than subscribe. To me this is not about the amount of money I spend. I will gladly spend more money if I can be sure that no matter what happens, the game will be available in my account ready to be downloaded. So PLEASE give us the OPTION of buying individual games outright. I know I alone have very little power but I’m voting with my wallet. As long as I’m required to subscribe, I won’t spend a dime on GameClub games. ✓ Controller supportA lot of these old games are classics for iOS. Several I still own and play on my older iPod touch. I think 5 a month is a decent price for this service except one thing. No controller support on games that need it... like Mage Gauntlet. It’s not iOS 6 with lame Mfi controller support. We’re at iOS 13 with Xbox and PS4 controller support. Also for each game it makes you put in an email only for it to say error so even if you have previously purchased games they will not work! ✓ Poor supportI have reached out to GameClub multiple times regarding a detrimental bug in one of their games, Cursed TD 2. It has been over 2 weeks and not a single response. I’m not even sure if they have people looking at their tickets anymore. It saddens me, but this game was a huge part of why I paid for the subscription in the first place so I will not longer continue to pay for a service that is broken at its core. ✓ Sales Pitch Falls ShortThe game “Spider 2:Rite of the Shrouded Moon” is an absolute treasure to me. I’ve gone to great lengths to spread the word on this game over the years, and maintain the game on multiple devices. I recently damaged an iPhone 11 with Spider 2 on it, and had been again a happy girl. I’ve had to re install everything including Spider 2 on a new IPhone 11. After installation, I got a pop up saying since I had purchased the full game in original form, I had free access to my game, without ads. Sad to state, not true.
