Learn Chess with Dr. Wolf for Positive User Reviews

Loving it!I hadn’t played in many years. Having tried a few chess apps, Dr Wolf is proving to be the best. The ‘mistakes review’ is extremely helpful for understanding how blind-sided I can be …I’m only on ‘Advanced Intermediate’, but working at it. It’s the feedback in the context of my games against the Dr Wolf (computer) that works for me..Version: 3.2.1

Great way to get better at chessThe free version doesn’t give you much feedback on your game but it’s still a great app to practice on..Version: 2.43

Highly recommendThis app teaches you so much about chess and helps improve your game. It’s easy to use and focuses on making you better. And on top of all that it’s free!.Version: 2.37

Good app with potentialI am a USCF class B player. I have been playing on the advanced level for roughly 20 games. What I notice is Dr. Wolf doesn’t necessarily play at an advanced level, but rather suggests advanced skills he hopes to cover in the game. That does not mean those opportunities will arise. Furthermore Dr. Wolf will suggest to you to take back a move that is either a mistake or he sees something better. In either instance I have had Dr. Wolf make outright blunders dropping material or giving his Queen away for nothing. As far as rating goes 1500 is average USCF and Dr. Wolf has me at 1055 when I am 1630 USCF. I have won all 20 games so I don’t understand why this is. This app has a lot of potential and I love the concept. I’d like to see these issues fixed..Version: 1.47

Great AI coachIn this app you play against an AI coach, Dr Wolf. Wolf will play close to your skill level so you have the satisfaction of being challenged without getting crushed. Love how you learn by playing full games rather than drills. I also like the training feature where you re-examine mistakes from your past games. My only complaint is sometimes the solution Dr Wolf has in mind doesn't really make sense. I think if Dr Wolf doesn't have a good explanation for the move then that position should be skipped. Thank you!.Version: 2.04

Must playI love to play dr wolf everyday to get better and I think more ppl should play.Version: 2.33

The most amazing and useful chess app everDownloaded it a few days ago, I really love this app!! I love chess but this app teaches you strategies while you are playing and the amount of stuff you learn and you remember then, is unbelievable... Really well Done guys!!! You make the difference!.Version: 1.54

Wonderful teaching game, but...This app is fantastic, but I feel I can’t give it 5 stars for two reasons. If a future update fixes these, then I’ll happily change my review. First, when asking for a hint on what to do, it doesn’t often say why we should move this piece there, and it isn’t always apparent (though he might explain why he moved a certain piece or congratulate you on finding an attacking or defensive position). The second is that the level difference between “Advanced” and “Expert” is astronomical. I can easily win against Dr. Wolf’s advanced-level games, but the expert level demolishes me every single time. I’m not suggesting to make the app easier; however, adding more levels after advanced and before expert would be a great addition. Being stuck at a level that I can beat over and over provides a steeper learning curve when the next one is near impossible for my skill level. I’m not sure if I’m the only one with this issue, but for my own personal benefit after buying the pro version (definitely recommend), I wish it had this feature. Note: I have not also tried out other teachers yet, was hoping to beat Dr. Wolf first..Version: 1.64

I ❤️ Dr.WolfGet.Version: 1.97

Truly impressive for teaching chessI make educational games for a living and as such, I’m honestly really particular about any interactive game or app that tries to teach things. A lot of them are simply not very good at educating, long story short, this app is excellent and I have a better understanding of chess in one hour of practice than I had from friends trying to explain things for hours. I downloaded three or four chess apps at once to see which one I liked most, but haven’t needed another app besides this one at least while I learn. I like how it encourages trying moves in a learning mode and lets you undo those moves, and also gives real time feedback on your choices and your weaknesses in those moves. Great job!.Version: 3.4.2

App is goodThis app is well made, is fair in how much it will teach you before asking for money. I am able to beat the worst bot now..Version: 3.2.1

Love this chess coach!Dr. Wolf is fun and friendly way to learn chess. The coaching and lessons take you step by step into the nuances of the game, both strategy and tactics. Whenever you need a little help, Dr. Wolf is there to give you a hint and encouragement. It feels like you are playing with a real person because Dr. Wolf comments on every move, praising your good ideas and cautioning against a mistake. I love when I make a stupid move and he says “Oh dear…” but it’s nice to know you can always take it back and try again..Version: 2.38

“Expert” level not expert enough.Dr. Wolf at expert level is no more than a version of the advanced level that makes almost just as many mistakes, albeit less embarrassing ones. When I launch a legitimate attack on “expert” Dr. Wolf, he often makes ridiculous blunders that beckons checkmate in less than 5 moves, leaving me feeling snubbed by the end. There are obviously somewhat educational purposes to his sudden weaknesses, but a difficulty level named as it is should be a platform where highly advanced players can feel consistently challenged. I believe having a more formidable opponent that can still act as a guide through more complicated variations retains more educational value than an opponent who plays with enticing inaccuracy. The latter is, after all, not an ideal role model for the more perceptive amateurs. Also, the concept of “strong moves” are based on very short-sighted standards, evaluating my moves just in light of incidental guiding principles and not the overall strategy of the game. Not expert teaching, I guess. If the nature of the app’s chess advice would be more refined and flexible, this app would become more competitive. And if learning opportunities and consistency of computer strength could be reconciled in an exceptional way, this app would become my favorite for chess..Version: 1.59

Love this gameI became better at chest like never before thanks to this game; one of my best app purchase in a while! Great job Dr Wolf.Version: 2.43

SuperbThis is an excellent chess tutor app, in fact it’s a superbly designed app full stop. Clever interaction, top hints and explanations, and Dr Wolf is a great original character. It’s helped me a lot... This app deserves a wide audience..Version: 1.32

Just brilliantThis app is just brilliant, I’ve gained so much from it so far and there is still lots of content left. I like the in game tips and the game mistake reviews and the lessons are easy to understand!.Version: 3.0.2

ExcellentI have been wanting to learn how to properly play chess for years, and this app pretty much covers it for me. Good lessons and tips, really enjoyable. $6.50/month isn’t that bad either for the monthly cost, or $4/month for a year is reasonable as well, considering how much an actual instructor would cost. Highly recommended!!.Version: 1.59

I know how to play now! Before using this app, I was only good enough to stay alive in a game of chess. It was especially hard for me to wrap my head around capturing the king and winning in general. Even going against a “Beginner” Dr. Wolf would have been difficult for me. BUT thanks to the lessons I got from here, that’s not really an issue anymore. I’ve won several games! I’ve only been able to beat the beginner mode, but I see this as an improvement! I’m excited to study more on the lessons the app has in store for me. Even if it’s just in the free version..Version: 1.991

Improved my game in a few weeksReally impressed with this app. I have tried other chess trainers in the past but this is the only one that gives explanations in plain English. It has already improved my chess level and I'm sure I will only improve. Things I would love to see would be adaptive AI level based on my playing and also integration of lessons inside of a game. By that I mean the ability to be given a brief lesson on a specific move/tactic when made during a game. It would also be great to have a way of learning and practising "book" moves. All in all a great app that I hope gets even better!.Version: 1.59

Great appYesterday I decided that learning how to play chess would be a good use of my time, and this is the app that I happened to download. I love the hands on puzzle approach to teaching and because of the amount of times you go over a single thing, I found myself learning quickly. You do eventually hit a paywall but honestly you get so much for free even if you don’t pay you can leave knowing the basics of chess to get you started. No complaints here..Version: 2.33

Decent trainerI would prefer it if there was a way to change the board appearance it looks like it’s played on an old copy of the Financial Times. An option to change the design would be helpful.Version: 1.59

Excellent!!Just learning to play or looking to hone your skills, this app and the coaching program really delivers!!.Version: 1.97

Fantastic appLove this app. Super for beginners or those wanting to tune up their game. Works flawlessly and the coaching on the purchased package is great and well worth it!.Version: 1.64

Fun and InteractiveI really enjoy using this app daily and have since purchased the full version. I have noticed some errors, however, with some of the lessons for they display more pieces than what actually exists (e.g. 3 bishops during the forking lesson). Otherwise this is a very useful app to learn chess..Version: 1.59

Great, couple improvements to suggestGreat app in general. Couple areas for improvement: he says some of the same things over and over. (“I see, you’re castling.” Etc.) It’s irritating. It would also be nice if it was somehow visually represented which pieces on each side have been captured, the way you can easily see that during a live game. But most of all, it would be great if the coach could point out MY specific weaknesses. Nothing would help me improve as much as that. I was delighted to see the update but it’s introduced a bug. It’s not recognizing me as a paid subscriber anymore and won’t coach. Can you fix?.Version: 1.57

It’s addictiveAwesome app for a raw beginner like me. Has kept me entertained every time I pick it up. It’s only been a week and I’m already at a level now where I feel I have a certain amount of control which is very rewarding..Version: 1.64

Five stars with a caveat!Overall this is the best app I’ve found to learn chess. The balance of constructive criticism to congratulation is encouraging and it keeps you wanting to learn more. My only complaint is that sometimes the hint button that shows you the best place to move makes no sense and there’s no explanation for why that move was suggested. One time it advised me to basically forfeit my last rook and my queen and then its next move was checkmate. Unless it was some greater lesson on listening to your own instincts, I can’t figure out why that was helpful! I would also love a button that shows pieces captured..Version: 1.61

YolSometimes I frustrate you, I feel bad. Before I make a move I don’t think well.Version: 3.0.2

Well doneReally well made app, take it slow and practise and it pays off. I am awful but it made me enjoy chess and I show progress.Version: 1.87

StudentGreat learning tool and fun.Version: 1.99

Excellent tool for just starting out at chess.I knew very little about chess but wanted to know. I started on Dr. Wolf and not long after, I feel I could sit down and play someone. I’d probably loose at this point but I’m doing and redoing the lessons and playing “Dr. Wolf” often. I am getting better. There are so many ways to learn on this app: Lessons, Training and Playing. Even while playing Dr. Wolf is helping - if you want the help. Not to mention, it is fun and nearly addictive if you want to learn chess..Version: 1.95

Excellent! This app is great, particularly for beginners. There are many levels of play to set and a constant dialogue, with or without help , as you choose. Great! And for no cost !..... However I wish I could pay a one off fee for the app as I do not want to commit to monthly subscription as suggested..Version: 1.86

IncredibleGives wonderful advice and insight on how to play chess, way better than I would’ve thought..Version: 2.33

My favourite game nowThis game has helped me get better at chess it’s worth it.Version: 3.2.1

This app is truly teaching me to play chess. I have waited for this for years.I have wanted to find an application that would help me learn the game. It has really opened my understanding of the game. Here a few reasons: 1) The various games provide relaxed training opportunities to make a mistake and then ask if I wish to flip the board to determine why the last move was a mistake. 2) When I finish a game I can go over all of my blunders to compare what I did versus what would have been a better move. 3) The training session help explore specific tactics I can use for the specific pieces in unique circumstances. 4) I just learned there are multiple coaches and I am switching to see if they offer different teaching methods. The only suggestion I can think of is the developer could break the games down to help me recognize when to recognize sacrificing a piece or how to develop in game tactics when transitioning from opening and developing pieces. Well done. Worth the money if you want to learn..Version: 3.4.0

One of the best chess appsI’ve learned a ton quickly from using this app. I went from knowing next to nothing to going up to being rated 500 in about two weeks. It’s like having a chess coach on your phone. Well worth paying $35. I want to give the app five stars but I gave it four for a reason. The app doesn’t have a way to practice an opening you’re working on when you want to. I would love it if the app gave me the ability to choose what opening you want Dr. Wolf to play. I wish I could, for example, have Dr. Wolf play queen pawn openings so I could work on that defense with black. It would be amazing if this app had an opening trainer. I would pay extra money if there was an add on with an opening trainer..Version: 1.94

An annoying bugOverall, great to improve chess. However, if after a bad move Dr Woolf suggests to view from the other side and on returning sides you move away from the app, when restoring the game and making a move you’re presented with the message “Oh no something has gone wrong. Let’s start a new game” and you can’t finish the game you were playing. So annoying! Also, it would be useful to be able to ask Dr Woolf why he made a particular move, as it’s often not obvious and would be a great way of learning. Worth the subscription, but could be better..Version: 1.82

Good appMaybe more feedback when you make a bad move on why it’s a bad move. That’s it..Version: 3.3.2

AI So Advanced!Easy to forget that Dr Wolf is an AI. This is the first bot I have ever interacted with and not been painfully aware that it’s just a stupid computer program. I could even say I admire and look up to Dr Wolf and his mastery of chess. In-game coaching occasionally lacks explanation as to why a certain move is better, and sometimes the suggested move doesn’t seem better at all; that is, unless he’s just failing to explain why it is..Version: 1.64

Absolutely love it! Make it stronger though. This is one of the best chess apps I’ve ever seen! It offers valuable insights as you play and the whole experience leaves you feeling like you’re playing a real coach genuinely interested in helping you. My only complaint is that it’s too easy to beat even on the highest level. I’m rated around 1700 uscf and even the expert setting isn’t terribly challenging. PLEASE up the playing strength and I’d gladly dole out the monthly fee for lessons. This is exactly the kind of app I’ve been looking for..Version: 1.17

ChessVery good great app.Version: 3.2.1

Wonderful Chess TutorialAs a newcomer to Chess, many tutorials or other apps don’t work in teaching, however even after 20 minutes or less on this app I was able to learn the basics of chess. Much recommended to anyone willing to learn chess..Version: 1.51

Fun way to learn chessIf you’re a beginner like me Chess has a lot of fundamental ideas and tactics that you should know to make sure you have a good foundation and this app is the best I’ve played so far it’s fun and guides you through games in a way i haven’t seen other chess Apps do. It tells you when you make mistakes and gives you alternatives. Im learning and having fun playing games where now i understand how to begin, what moves i should start out with etc. If you’re a beginner and want to improve and learn fundamentals and understand why certain moves are made in games and how to pull them off etc check out Dr Wolf 👍🏽👍🏽.Version: 1.82

Actually Learning ChessI don’t tend to write many reviews, but this app earned one! It is a great step-by-step learning tool for how to properly play chess, learn different strategies and thought processes, help you learn from your mistakes, and allow you to also just play some chess. You can also play with lessons happening as you play, or just play a normal game. And, you can choose which lessons to learn, so if you are familiar with the pieces but want to learn more strategy, you can get right to it! Explains clearly, gives you as many tries and you need, and helps you find improvements in your games..Version: 1.89

Best in a (non existent) classShort review : if you are learning chess, Dr. Wolf will be a great booster. I should elaborate from my own perspective. There are resources that will teach the rules, and there are resources that are challenging enough for a semi-serious player (say FIDE 1400+). From there down to the rank beginner there is precious little. Dr. Wolf is deigned to fill that gap, and all while I’m having fun playing a new and unique game! I am an advanced beginner (as I write ~ FIDE 1000) and need help with tactics. Dr. Wolf won’t tell me every tactic (chess is a difficult game, folks) but I really enjoy when the app offers its commentary. I have a feeling there will be more to come, although if I ever get to 1400 (that certainly is an aim) it will be time to move on to the typical resources. Another great tool for us patzers is of course regular play, and there may well be cheaper options if one improves through competition..Version: 1.56

I really enjoy playing !!!I think it’s a well structured app.Version: 3.4.1

Could it be more accessible towards blind people?I haven't used this app long but I'm excated to use it and sign up as it sounds promicing. I didn't sign up but started beginner lesson on peaces. It told me about rooks and said to move the rook to the star and I'm blind so I obviously don't know where the star is. Your app seems to function very well with voice over Screen reader but it didn't say where the star was so that is very difficult for me. I would love to use your app because it sounds so promising but I would like to be able to compleate the challenges. They are quite visual but I don't think it will require to much change to make voice over screen reader read the visual things out to make it accessible for me to please. Thank you So much and very excited to play and learn when this is right. Thank you.Version: 3.0.2

Very impressed with Dr. Wolf!I’ve been telling everyone how this noob has gotten so good so quickly and it’s thanks to Dr Wolf! Just started playing Chess and have learnt so much already. Can’t wait to learn more. Excellent job on the app guys! Great interface and interactions! It’s world class!.Version: 1.63

GreatSo fun to play! Only wish the free version had more coaching but just can still play different levels for free..Version: 3.0.2

Beat MagnusThanks to Dr Wolf, I was able to beat Magnus at age 8 after many many many failures. My chess game is improving because of the lessons and the in-game training. Onward to the next age of Magnus..Version: 2.38

Now I can’t actually play chessI knew nothing about chess, now I can actually play a little. Methodical instruction that.builds on techniques. Enjoyable and fun..Version: 1.77

Addictive game, great coachingNew to chess, learning to love it as a result of this game. It’s great!.Version: 1.88

Excellent Chess gameThanks for Dr Wolf. I love it..Version: 1.77

Entertaining way to learn!I keep improving and the supportive permissive environment really helps!.Version: 1.84

Supports older devicesI use an old phone and old iOS. I’m really happy to see that they’ve done some bug fixes and it works on my old phone again! Hooray for supporting older devices!! This is a great app and I really enjoy it. I can see visible progress when practice with Dr. Wolf :).Version: 1.91

Fantastic tool for improving chessI’ve been trying to improve my game for a year or so and making little progress. This app is a great application of technology. In the two weeks I’ve had it so far my game has notably improved. Equivalent private coaching would be multiples of the purchase price..Version: 1.94

Great app that doesn’t cheat but EncouragesBeen looking for a app to replace Magnus app. He is not encouraging chess and is now surrounded by people who ONLY love money. The money over chess doesn’t take chess as a whole to the next level. You need to pay constantly for brain power. Which is to aid you in learning the better move. In over 5 years the app would never never offer a draw. Which is ridiculous its AI for crying out loud. Then when it’s your turn to win the app just crashes to keep your rating down. I have complained for years. And it’s always some unencouraging answer. This app actually teaches instead of discouraging the art form..Version: 1.59

Brilliant app. A godsend.Love it. It really is inspiring what you have made. My only gripe is in the UI. I have to over extend my thumb to hit the ‘next’ button. This is fatiguing on a large phone. Might I suggest that the chess board becomes a hit zone to forward progress? Well done guys. Also — I can’t find a way to turn off your sound effects? I tend to listen to music while using your app. Is there a way that I cannot find?.Version: 1.92

Fun way to improve your skillsI really like this app: it’s well-designed and very helpful, and I think the cost is quite reasonable. About the only thing I’d add is the ability to get more detail on why a suggested move is good or why a move the engine considers a mistake is bad (it will often say, but not always)..Version: 1.89

The best chess app yetI downloaded this app with some skepticism, since I’ve tried numerous chess apps over the years but found them frustrating. This one, however, is in a league of its own (I have the paid version). My chess abilities have skyrocketed, and my only complaint is that it’s addictive! I would like to see some additional options as the developers continue to listen to feedback, as they so graciously do. Some suggestions: let the user see which pieces have been captured; add a forward button (for when we use the back button and then change our mind—sometimes Dr W plays differently when we do that); explain why he sometimes labels a move as a blunder (in the “learn from your mistakes” option after a game, which is generally very helpful). In that section, I’d also like to see exactly what I played when he shows me the board where I made a mistake. But for those of you wondering whether this app is worth it, I would say that its advantages are terrific!.Version: 1.57

Great App with much more potentialThis is in my opinion one of the best apps to learn how to play chess if your a beginner or simply looking to improve your game. It’s simple to use yet in depth enough for people who already understand the basics. However there is room for improvement. First of all after a game is complete you are able to go back and replay moves where you made a mistakes. However if you click the ? Button for help, it tells you what the best move to make is but doesn’t explain why. A small explanation of the preferred move would be a good addition for those playing this game to learn. Secondly I think for the money there could be more in depth lessons, such as popular openings, exchanges etc. But if your looking for a game to improve, I have found this to be simple and easy to use. Great app guys!.Version: 1.64

Late discovery of chessI am 70 years old and took up chess 2 months ago. I started with Dr Wolf about a month ago and have found the training and lessons are helping me improve. Chess has made my retirement days more interesting and I am glad I have discovered chess, albeit belatedly..Version: 1.87

Simply excellentGreat tutorials with reasoned explanations- a great way to learn..Version: 1.65

Great appGreat way to improve on your chess skills. Good value and lots of fun.. definitely recommend this to any budding player. The tips and lessons help develop your game.Version: 2.04

CrushingThis app is well designed and much more fun than the traditional sort of “chess puzzles” type approach. You can also personalise it a bit, choosing coaches, changing your name and so on. A few times it has made me laugh with its sass. Update with more sass, please! The only problem is that I’ve played 175 games and am getting worse instead of better. I have enjoyed using the app and say it is good value for money, but my chess isn’t improving. Perhaps it’s just me. Perhaps I need Dr Wolf to be a bit more direct or the training to be in more bite-sized chunks. After my last set of games, Dr Wolf seemed to suggest I should take a nap. She may be right..Version: 1.83

Fantastic teaching appFantastic teaching app. Well done, it’s been an enormous help to me and I’ve already improved dramatically. It’s quite hard to believe sometimes that the incredibly helpful and friendly guyyou’re playing isnt a real guy coaching you and giving compliments/encouragement along the way. Best chess coaching app ever. Cheers.Version: 1.05

Chess appGreat game, a bit slow to load sometimes.Version: 1.991

Finally! For ages I have wanted an app like some other apps which explain key concepts in tutorials but which explains these concepts AS you play with it so that it’s like playing against a teacher who is assessing your moves and telling you what you did right and what you did wrong. Finally it is here! It sounds silly but I have taken a break from chess and was nervous to get back into online play. Having this app means I can play not just against a dumb lifeless bot but against a bot who will guide me and teach me as I play. If I could make one criticism it would be that more levels would be a great idea, maybe 5 levels of beginner, 5 of intermediate, 5 of expert and 5 of master. Overall a fantastic app Update: the creator of the app personally contacted me to thank me for my review! The customer support for this app is outstanding and I have recommended it to everyone I know who plays chess and everyone at my chess club.Version: 1.59

Is it possible..Great training program. I really appreciate the lessons learnt sofar. As am trying to get better at my strategy. However there was a queening move that DrWolf did in two moves. Queening in one file and capturing my piece in another file all in one move. Is that possible?.Version: 2.04

One of the best games I ever playedIt’s a good game to get it calms your mind.Version: 3.0.2

Excellent appI was a complete beginner, a bit scared of trying chess at all, but I’ve found this app to be extremely informative, easy to use and it seems to have improved my skills and knowledge about differing strategies..Version: 1.59

Very good step to step teaching materialI am very impressed. Clear examples and good instructions. Very easy to understand and it’s fun to learn..Version: 1.87

What a fantastic app.I’ve been designing apps for 10 years, I have worked in most of the big tech companies out there. Trust me when I tell you that this is a fantastic app, incredibly well designed, fun, gentle, it’s almost like having an excellent master next to you. Showing you the ropes in a calm and gentle manner. I love this. Subscribing 100%! Thanks for making this app <3.Version: 1.80

Very Useful worth subscriptionI am finding this app far more useful than slogging through books. The programme works extremely well and gives you valuable teaching and advice while actually playing a game. i has helped me move on from being stuck in a rut after learning the basics..Version: 1.86

One,if not, the best!I have been using this one to improve my chess skills. Bare in mind that apart from knowing the basics of how each piece moves I knew nothing at all. Since learning with Sir Wolf, I, now, confidently can play a game of chess and maybe have a chance of winning BUT practice is the best tool you have. I try to play a game a least daily and alocate at least 30-60 minutes a day in learning, mistakes review, lessons. Today I have just learned the Queen’s Gambit pt1 and just used it to play a game in Intermediate level, and won quite comfortably with 35 great moves and only 5 minor Blunders (from when forking). I would like to thank the Devs for making this learning kerb such a friendly one and the experience you get from the moment you start the app to the moment when you close it is not only fun but so calmly and “gentlemanly”, it is as if there is not a bot that is teaching you but an actual person. Keep it up! Love it! I am a subscriber student to Sir Wolf and it is so worth it (of course if you would like to learn this fascinating board game)..Version: 3.4.0

Bad reviews come from FreeloadersBefore getting this app, I only knew how the pieces moved. That’s it. I went through all the lessons for beginners and then played a game against the AI set at “strong beginner”. I was able to defeat it, albeit with my coach every once in a while nudging me in the right direction and the ability to take back some bad moves here and there. The amount I learned is astonishing. I signed up for the $4.99/month which is just peanuts considering you get a “coach” that actually teaches you and sets up many exercises and problems when covering lessons. Much like a math or music tutor would do. If you do yearly instead of monthly you’ll get it for less than three bucks a month. This is such a no-brainer. I took the free trial and saw the value right away. Not surprisingly, the bad reviews for this magnificent app come from people who want everything for free. That’s their main beef: “Waa waaaa it’s pay for play, waaa waaa”. How are they surprised that they have to pay for quality goods and services? Do these people go to a car dealership, enjoy their free test drive, and then complain that they have to pay if they actually want the car? Anyway, the AI coaching here is nice. A patient and understanding experienced dude at your service 24/7. Exceptional for beginners..Version: 1.59

Great for newbiesGreat for noobs.Version: 1.95

Dr. WolfIt is the best way to learn chess!.Version: 1.85

Excellent training toolA no-fuss chess player that focuses on teaching, which it does really well. My only criticism is that the subscription is quite steep, particularly as there are no real external costs, and I subscribe to applications that give far more for a fraction of the price. If the cost is not an issue for you, you will get a lot from Dr. Wolf’s stoic, unflinching face..Version: 1.62

What a great appLearning chess has helped me a lot. Dr wolf also showed me the strategies and played with me!.Version: 1.52

FantasticGreat chess app. Thank you..Version: 2.39

Good game but there is some flawsI’ve only been playing for about 15 minutes, when I got to what to do on the opening 11/33 I played a move then he responded and said I’m attacking 2 pieces though I could use the piece he attacked and defend the other one and if he took it would be a bad trade for him, so it’s not thinking what will be the best for me but overall it’s great for training it helps you a lot, though I would be considered a beginner but it’s beginner is so weak. It gives good tips good for training I’ll be using it for a while.Version: 2.43

Awesome chess tutorNot one to write reviews but this is a awesome chess tutor!!!!.Version: 2.38

It’s very very goodHard to beat at the most advanced level & always “up for a game” The coaching wasn’t for me so I learn & play for free with no annoying ads I highly recommend this app and wish to publicly thank the developers..Version: 1.96

Best chess appI have downloaded and played a variety of chess coach aps and this is definitely the best one available. My game has improved and the game review is excellent. The app truly plays at the correct level ranging from “beginner mistakes” to chess master variations. If you want to learn chess or improve your game this is the app to buy.Version: 1.64

Recommended to my friendBest teaching tool ever.Version: 3.4.2

Very interactive. The thing I like about this app is the instant feedback your get after every move. With most chess computers all you are given is a numerical assessment of the position but here you are the told in natural language what the situation is, which I much prefer. In would be nice if, in the future, you could set up a position from a book to study and also increase the engine strength for serious study but perhaps that’s down the line, I hope so anyway. Very good app with much potential and I just hope the developers can make it even better. I also love the way you can go over your mistakes in a game assisted by Dr Wolf. I think this could be very valuable in improving as a player. I just wish they had this out decades ago when I had a burning interest in chess but have become a bit cynical over the years due to lack of training..Version: 1.58

Dr Wolf; A Great Way to Rediscover ChessSure, there are lots of chess apps available but the Dr. Wolf app is perfect for someone wanting to improve their game. With a combination of structured lessons, guided training and gameplay with feedback, progress and mistakes are clearly identified, allowing the user to develop their understanding and skill in the the game at their own pace.Version: 1.98

Great for learningIf you are looking at ways to improve your game and build upon your skills from beginner or imtermidate skill level, this is the chess app for you. I enjoy it and have been learning more than I was expecting from this app. The only down side is it doesn't synch across multiple devices. If you subscribe and down load the app on your iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, your progress isn't update across all devices (thus the four stars). However, when I brought this up to their support, I received a quick reply and was informed they are aware of the issue and are working to fix it (five stars and thank you Holly). Overall, I would highly recommend this chess app to family and friends and feel the cost of the subscrition is worth it..Version: 2.04

Got into this after the Quern’s GambitSuch a cool app. I really wanted to learn chess but I found books very difficult. First there is the notation to learn, then the book isnt very interactive so you need an incredible memory to learn anything. This just teaches you as you play. I’d tried to do something similar by playing a faceless bot and referencing books or websites as I played. But this just did that so much more succinctly. I think this app is perfect to take you from complete beginner to intermediate player in no time at all. I am 2 days in and I can now beat other bots at intermediate level who used to wipe the floor with me. It’s like having your very own Mr Shaibel! (Only kinder!).Version: 1.64

Very good chess appGreat chess app with good lessons and adjustable levels of gameplay. The only problem I have with the app is that it promises a free trail period after the initial training has ended but when you sign up you are prompted to pay. I realise the developers need to make some money, just think it could be made clearer. Other than that, one of the very best chess apps available..Version: 1.80

Necessity!!Good Teacher you’ve got here!!!.Version: 1.75

Learning Chess? This is the app for youI play chess badly and love a chess puzzle, but this app is perfect in every way. It’s like having a friend teach you. The post game review is second to none pointing out key moves you did wrong and challenging you to fix them. Instant subscription from me 👍🏻.Version: 1.59

Could be better.Game recommends moves, often correcting moves I’ve made, but without explanation of why my move was bad or why the suggested move is better. Last night it suggested a move which would have allowed my pawn to be promoted, only to be immediately captured by my opponent’s rook. I found a better move which put his king in check, forcing his rook to move to block, followed by a another check, forcing his rook far enough away to allow my pawn to be promoted and not captured. Overall, I enjoy the app and find it helpful. I am an ‘advanced beginner’ hoping to improve my skills. Again, explanations of recommended moves would be helpful, perhaps even having the computer play through several moves from your error to demonstrate why it is a blunder, then return the board to a point immediately prior to the blunder..Version: 1.65

A wonderful ideaA very nice and classic looking chess set up, but the teaching is where this app really shines. The Dr Wolf character is polite, kind, and (at least for me) uses very good methods of teaching the moves and rules of the game. I especially enjoy how after playing a full game with him, he will go back and review the mistakes you made. Even more so that he will do this for multiple games. The only thing I dont like, and is my reason for a four instead of five star review, is the subscription system. I strongly dislike how many apps are switching to the subscription system as opposed to simply making and selling a product. I wont be subscribing for a game, but should there ever be a one time payment option to gain the lessons then I would very strongly consider paying that. However, I will still enjoy the free games with Dr Wolf as he is quite an enjoyable opponent. :).Version: 2.43

Great appI love this chess app. I’m a 52 yr old novice who new absolutely nothing about openings, the middle game or the end game strategies of chess. Still not a GM by any means but this app has really helped me to understand the game a lot better..Version: 3.0.2

Great game with helpful tipsTraining module very clever and helpful.Version: 1.64

Incredible learning app but with one simple request. This is by far the most clear, straight to the point, and accessible chess learning app. My only request is that when I tap the hint button, it usually poses a wonderful question that encourages me to figure it out. It would be great if the solution to the hint didn’t automatically pop up after a few seconds. I’m honestly trying to learn and when the answer pops up while I’m still figuring it out, it doesn’t let me learn it on my own. Perhaps only give the solution upon hitting the hint button a second time. Otherwise, this app is perfect..Version: 2.41

Nice learning environmentProvides a friendly, supportive learning experience. The lessons and the gameplay are symbiotic. To make the app even better, there should be deeper explanations on why the “best move” hints are really the best moves, especially during the middle game. Sometimes there is a good explanation, but other times the explanation is too shallow or altogether absent. Clearly the hints are considering the gameplay several moves ahead, so why not share the logic with the “student” like a live teacher would? The game board could also benefit from some 3D options to create a more life-like experience..Version: 1.64

Dr WolfIt’s a good app, but don’t plan on practicing openings, this guy never has any type of traditional opening. Always opens like c6 or a6 or something crazy. He plays well but it would be nice if you could plan his style so you could practice openings. You start 10 games and rewind after every first move, he’s going to have 10 different openings. This guy absolutely never starts the first of second moves with a knight either like 99% of the people your going to play in real life. Out of about 50 openings i tried just to see, almost forty had double pawn openings and most were like bishop pawn or rook pawn openings. You just don’t see those playing the people i play. I would fall over dead if this guy had a pawn knight knight bishop opening one single time. He may in there somewhere, but I’ve never seen it.Version: 1.96

It's really goodThe application is really well done. The writing is impressive. Dr. Wolf almost seems like a real person. The application really helped me to improve my chess. The training is good and when you're playing "real" you can always request suggestions. I wish there were more training. I finished everything within two months... and will now move to another app only because I feel like I need more training and now there's nothing left to do in this app. Hey guys if you add more trainings, more tactics, strategy training, please let me know!.Version: 1.59

Want to stop being average?Plenty of apps out there but this will improve your game immediately. Stop looking for freebies get your wallet out and start winning some games..Version: 3.1.3

Excellent Chess InstructionWell-presented chess companion which has the eponymous avatar to guide you towards being a better player. No long tutorials. Just start playing chess and the doc will make suggestions as you progress. You can track your progress in certain disciplines with level stats. It’s like sitting down at a board with a personable Prof. Layton. Has definitely improved my real-world game and broadened my understanding of the nuances that separate casual players from hard-to-beat veterans..Version: 1.05

Best appThis is the best app if you’re learning how to play chess.Version: 2.34

Best chess training appThis chess app is amazing at making it feel like there is a person sitting down with you and walking you through every aspect of chess, from basic rules and principles, to advanced chess terms and strategies. This app is great for everyone, whether you don’t even know how chess pieces move, if you have been playing casually for a while and want to become better, or if you are competitive and looking to broaden your knowledge..Version: 1.87

Works really well. the best I've felt learning chessWould recommend to any beginning doing a quick way of getting better..Version: 2.04

Automatically give hintsPlease give an option that shows everything. Like the strategy of the other sides positions and it’s advantages. Also including an automatic hint shower for your side instead of having to manual spam the question mark each move..Version: 2.37

Awesome but one suggestionThis app is awesome but I have one suggestion Add a lesson on how to checkmate with your king, 1 bishop and 1 knight. Most people don’t know how to do this in the endgame and will end up drawing either by the 50 move rule or stalemate or repetition. (only piece for black/white is their king and 1 bishop, 1 knight, and king on the other colour’s side.) I think the King+Bishop+Knight checkmate would be useful to have added to the app so please consider my suggestion..Version: 2.04

Where has this app been all my life?Amazing to use and learn. Takes you through key training points. From beginner to advanced. Highly recommend. Probably best for people who have played the game before but don’t have a solid grasp of strategy..Version: 1.64

Covid stress relieverThank you for creating a teaching chess program. This program has been very valuable due to our second Covid lock down. It provides learning chess why playing at different levels. Thank you, Clem.Version: 1.65

Pretty Darn GoodIt’s a very well designed app. One very frustrating thing that happens a lot - in the middle of a game, I might need to lock my screen or switch to another app. When I go back to the app, I get either get frozen on the main screen, or it’s not frozen, but still on the main screen instead of continuing where I left off. This seems to happen most consistently in the “review mistakes” training. Not sure if it’s a memory issue or what, like the memory is clearing when you leave the app, but it’s a little annoying. Not enough to stop using the app, and definitely not enough to keep me from recommending it to amateur chess enthusiasts!!.Version: 1.59

HelpfulDr wolf helps in a helpful way. He gives tips and tricks and compliments while teaching you..Version: 2.43

My chess gameEvery day I play a few games still at beginner’s level. It’s good,I have a lot of fun and hope to improve. Thanks Anna.Version: 1.59

I think this app is greatGreat app!.Version: 1.57

The perfect package.I’m a 68-year old who has been frustrated for sixty or so of those years by not ever being able to get any better in this infernal game, despite purchasing dozens of books and apps. This little chestnut of a program has changed all that in a handful of days. I’m always leery of “in-app purchases,” but the deal here is that you go through enough training and practice to improve, and then you decide whether you want to subscribe. No ads for other junk. I was sufficiently surprised by my progress (mostly by being forced into being systematic, and then chided by Dr Wolf the second I wobbled) to opt to subscribe. That was just days ago. Already I’m leaps and bounds ahead of where I was even then. I LOVE the lessons, the instant feedback, the brilliant writing throughout (thank you, writing team!), and innovations such as the invitation to swap sides whenever you do something stupid, designed so you can observe how obvious your gaffe was to the opponent. Truly humbling and instructive. That alone has vastly improved (what I know know is called) my Board Vision. Bless you Dr Wolf. I’m happy, hooked and hard at it. Checkmate!.Version: 1.54

Honestly I’m so happyMy mother is an amazing chess player even winning national competitions when in High School. I never showed any interest when I was younger but now that I’m 25, I really wanted to learn so we could play together. This app is actually so perfect and very well thought out.Version: 1.86

Great learning toolI didn’t know anything about chess before this app, it explains everything very well! Highly recommend!.Version: 3.2.1

The best app ever! / La meilleure application !A very concrete application where each move is very well explained. Being an intermediate player, learning by visualizing the moves with good advice is essential. you never feel alone. for less than $ 1 a week, you have loads of content. to buy without hesitation. if I could invest in this company that offers these applications, I would without hesitation..Version: 1.80

Great and freeIt’s really great so far, easily the best free app for chess. No annoying ads and you don’t need to pay for a membership. Really helps to improve your chess skills.Version: 1.77

Great coach - but scope for further improvementI’ve played some of the free games now, and feature I miss the most is being able to analyse my game: at the end he’ll see you played 60 good moves out of 65, but you have no way of finding out where you could have played better! In a similar vein, I’d like the level to auto-adjust to my playing strength. Lastly some of the coaching doesn’t always make sense, like being told to develop your pieces including your queen, when there are no queens left on the board! But overall a fun and useful application..Version: 1.56

OkGood for learning principles. Really fun UX. Only issue is that the AI is a unrealistic at levels beneath intermediate. It just plays well then makes a really obvious mistake that no human would ever make to give you a chance. Just play the harder levels and get beat, you’ll learn more..Version: 1.991

The best Chess appNeed to win? Buy this app is so good !!especially when you sign up for coaching😸.Version: 2.34

Great, howeverDuring some lessons, the pieces will magically duplicate. I had like 6 kings in the mate with queen lesson.Version: 1.68

Second time aroundI downloaded and used the app when it first came out and it was pretty good. I reinstalled again today (a year+ later) and the game seems improved. However, the app isn’t affordable. It’s not clear at all why it’s a subscription. It’s also not clear why the dev can’t make sufficient money off $10 per install. Your income isn’t my business but I would put up with an ad heavy version of this app if it meant that I could keep using it and you could get some amount of income from me. Or, you know, you could charge something a bit more reasonable like a one-time fee that fits the budget of us chess students outside the US..Version: 1.90

Best teacher ever!Dr Wolf - I’m in love 😍 you’re such a great teacher. So supportive!!! Thanks a million.Version: 1.56

Great way to learnI never leave reviews, but I had to leave one on this I have played a little bit of chess with my mates but no formal training this app got me to a pretty respectable level in about 3 weeks... I win every game against my mates easily now..Version: 1.64

Chess gameAwesome.Version: 1.59

If you want to ImproveThis is a very good learning app uncomplicated and fun to use. I have bought a years sub and a quarter through and do not regret it. I also use Liches which gives you variety and can be used online with other players. I always come back to good old Dr Wolf though..Version: 1.61

Great appI am much impressed with this app which is part of chess.com. I have known the rules to play chess decades ago, but could never figure out how to play it in a half-decent manner. I get more instruction for my money with the gold package on chess.com plus dr.wolf than I got with the chess.com diamond package I originally tried..Version: 2.38

Helpful, well executed chess tutoring appVery enjoyable gameplay and useful instruction. The Dr. Wolf persona is effective and enjoyable. Just enough variety and personality to make the dialogue motivating. The tutorials and opportunities for in-game learning are all very well realized. My only quibble would be that in the “reviewing mistakes” from the previous game, there could be more detail not just on the alternate moves to consider but why those moves were better choices. But this is a high class problem. About the only thing I can really complain about is that I hate the app icon. Yes, don’t mind this old man’s head on my home screen. I am a serious professional human..Version: 1.59

Great app!!This app works great and is a great teacher..Version: 1.68

Great appI learned to play chess with this app. I promised myself after things shut down a few years ago that I’d try anyway. This app/game is great and I play quite often, so much so that I received a message after finishing a game last night asking if I was a developer. I’m not. I’m still at the beginner level and the only reason why I win is because the app lets me. I make plenty of mistakes and the app always asks if I’d like lessons. Really can’t afford them right now, but I’ve learned a lot just from watching what the computer does in the game. I know and understand what each piece is named & how it moves and advances on the chess board. Much appreciated for a great app..Version: 2.40

Stuck on beginner levelReally enjoy this chess app, but don’t seem to be progressing in the app, despite having over 170 wins at beginner lvl and only 3 losses. I’ve done all the lessons, paid for a year’s subscription, but no progress with regard to moving on from beginner level to the next levels, don’t know what I am doing wrong!.Version: 1.92

Really good chess coachOne of the best apps I have used, I noticed an instant improvement in my chess games allowing me to climb up 100 rating almost instantly after implementing some of the teachings. Slight issue with the UI however the black squares on the chess board really hurt the eyes maybe a more filled colour instead of lines would help.Version: 2.41

Absolutely love it!By far the best learn to play chess app out there. Simple and easy to use, highly recommend!.Version: 1.97

THE BEST!!!THIS GAME IS AMAZING!!! for 4 years i have been wanting to learn how to play chess but NO ONE KNEW WHAT I MEANT by what are the rules and what can and can’t you do everyone tried explaining it to me but i just didn’t understand but now i can kinda play, so GAME ON DR. WOLF you’ve got a new player and a new competitor🃏i might even beat u at your own game, it is possible ofc..Version: 1.82

Dr WolfGreat Chess app! My daughter and I are both learning at the same time and this app is helping make memories..Version: 2.41

Best chess app everI know how to play but it’s great to learn actual techniques and this is the best way to learn. Learn as you go, in game tips, undo button, training, classes, even the look of the game is a W. Great app, congratulations to the creators..Version: 3.0.3

Best Chess Training App I have usedThis App makes you feel like you are playing against another person. The commentary you receive allows you to figure out what is wrong with your move and why the proposed move is better. The conversation is clearly limited and sometimes I want to get more from the ‘trainer’ but it is a great help..Version: 1.59

Good for newbiesHas helped me get started with this game. However he always tells me to stop training, and I have to find something else to do when I would rather keep training! But that is good because I get carried away with things and burnout..Version: 1.59

Dr.wolf chessThankful to Dr.wolf chess excellent lessons I learn amazing tactics idea to play chess successfully, for the past decade I was struggling to know the in-depth facts of chess game your super lessons proved very helpful and just in 3 days I am able to play defend and use proper approach in every move Thanks a lot Fida.Version: 3.0.3

Best Chess CoachI cannot believe what I have learnt in a short time with this application! I have tried others but this one is the absolute ultimate. I am a beginner and within a week improved my skills! Thank you so much for all the skills I am learning and the pleasure it gives me! I am a teacher and this app. was Triple Chessnutdesigned by exceedingly skilled teachers! Their technique is wonderful. You cannot go wrong with this app. Thank you so very much !.Version: 2.33

Making me persevereI’ve always been a very casual on-off chess player over the years but this app is helping me - as a fifty-something - get back into the game. Bravo. One small niggle - how can I change the time of the daily reminder to practice. It seems to have set itself at a very unsociable hour..Version: 3.0.2

Great for beginners, minimal naggingAttractive board, good AI for beginning players. You cannot move past beginner level unless you sign up for coaching at $5/month I think it is. But it doesn’t nag much and you can play uninterrupted as much as you want. I like it and play it often. I used to play the Optime chess but it’s basically just an ad, like many apps I suppose..Version: 1.991

Almost as good as a live teacherI’m a chess beginner and have been using this app at least once a day for about a month. I love that I have options: training on specific strategies, playing a game against Dr. West (who plays at my level,) and reviewing mistakes. You can also get hints, or take back a stupid move. Although “Dr. West” doesn’t speak out loud he makes plenty of comments which appear on the screen to reinforce what I am doing right or wrong. I highly recommend it..Version: 1.83

I like it a lotI was looking for a chess game where I could play others but I saw this and figured I would give it a chance. I used to play with my roommate and he taught me a lot about chess but I haven’t been able to play in almost a year. This was really cool to go through a game and get coached on better moves. I made quite a few perfect moves and he coached me through some of my mistakes. Originally this was a five star review but I wanted to see if I could change the design so it wasn’t so 2D and if not was going to mention that I’m the review. Instead I found out I can’t play for free very long. I didn’t realize it was a pay to play and so expensive to do so..Version: 1.56

!!!Kind of annoying when you wait for them to move for two hours!!!!.Version: 2.43

Helpful selection of Lessons, Unique InterfaceThis chess application provides the feeling of actually playing against a live opponent, who offers conversation; often helpful. There are a wide variety of lessons available. Probably could best be summarized as a friendly, helpful chess application. We have a suggestion to consider for future versions: When showing a suggested move (using the ? Option), briefly explain why the player should make this move. There are many levels available. All in all, highly recommended for the valuable tips and lessons..Version: 1.75

EnjoyingJust downloaded it. I’m enjoying learning chess!.Version: 1.55

Dr. Wolf on topVery informative tutorials with a teacher that is well-drawn, helpful, and would probably have a nice voice. His praises make me go brrrrr~ Love..Version: 3.0.2

Great app!Really nice game analysis and lessons on specific topics within chess. The app runs smoothly too. Any chance we could receive some sort of badge when we have completed lessons to track our own progress? Could these lessons or badges be rated gold/silver/bronze depending on your performance in these lessons to test and monitor the improve in one’s learning?.Version: 1.63

At first I loved it but then...I don’t want to be that one critical person that points out everything wrong with the app but that’s ok because there’s not much I might be wrong but sometimes I feel like it gives me tips that helps me to lose. Ive tried playing the whole game with tips and another without and I lasted much longer on my own. I’m not saying the tips should just be there so that I can win but... For example, it’ll tell me to move my king to the corner of the board ( I do it even if I don’t think it’s a good move because i don’t call myself an expert-my thinking is that it’ll tell me the better move) then two moves later I’m in Checkmate! Some could say that it’s my fault for not paying attention to the dangers on the chess board but aren’t the tips there to guide you in making a prudent, safe move that will make you think twice about the move you’re about to make? Seriously, correct me if I’m wrong please! But I did get good tips in general..Version: 1.59

Educational and InformativeI knew almost nothing of chess. Dr. Wolf taught me a lot as I started playing with him from the basics. He patiently plays based on your level and corrects your mistakes as you play. This is indeed a wonderful approach to learning chess step by step..Version: 3.1.3

A greatly encouraging and motivating atmosphereGames are exciting and boosting confidence..Version: 3.1.3

Very helpfulThis is very well designed, and seems like real interpersonal assistance. Best chess app I’ve seen so far..Version: 1.57

Wish the speech had soundWould love an option for read aloud speech vs having to reading it yourself — we have a kid who this would be amazing for but they can’t read yet so it’s inaccessible..Version: 3.0.2

Better ReplaysThis is a great teaching tool for sure. I’m learning stuff I’ve never known about on top of the fact that I haven’t played chess since I was an early teen. But watching you tube chess games this last month has inspired my desire to learn. What seems to be lacking for me in this tutorial is that I can’t back things up after checkmate. And during the Training I can’t back up or move forward to see where my blunder was if I were to move forward. I’ve found in playing the game here I’m making a move that the software is telling me it’s a bad move yet I continue anyway and find that I did exactly what I had planned to do and won. Although there may have been a better play but it didn’t fit my ultimate plane. If there were an option to click a button to show the better move or even moves that would help me a lot. I’m a very visual learner and that would be fantastic. I have a long way to go in learning this game and this software is great. I haven’t used any other software out there to know of anything different but here’s my 2 cents. Thank you again!!!.Version: 2.33

Absolutely Terrific. This game is absolutely terrific as it has helped me get significantly more skilled so I am able to compete with my friends who are chess enthusiasts..Version: 2.41
