Carbon - Macro Coach & Tracker for Negative User Reviews

Not as good for UK users vs competitors.TL:DR If in the UK get NutraCheck app, read on the internet and manage your own macros. In comparison to the Nutracheck app which has a much better tracker including food sharing and the UK database is accurate with a UI in general that is significantly better. Carbon often appears to forget what foods you’ve used regularly unless you create them, which isn’t a huge time investment but considering the annual cost should be included. There are countless items where a barcode scan brings up either the wrong food or the macros are wrong so you basically need to create your own food library. The search operator is also buggy and brings up highly processed foods first over an actual vegetable when searching with its name. The algorithm “coaching” for calorie adjustment is okay, but I think if you watched layne norton’s videos there is enough information there to do this yourself and the time and money you save with the better UI/functionality of Nutracheck - as a UK user - makes up for this and especially if you live with a partner who also tracks rather than them also having to create a food/recipe. I’m sticking out the process for the time being of diet and reverse and will update should it change..Version: 2.47.1241

Needs workFood database is TERRIBLE which leads to a lot of time wasted on manual entry. No companion web application so you must do tedious manual entry on mobile. Tolerances are too tight on macros rendering the whole ‘coaching’ thing useless unless you’re very strict. I’ve found using a free tracker and making my own adjustments to be easier. Adjusting your intake for your goals is not complicated either and doesn’t justify dumping $10/month into an inferior food tracker to get spoon fed an intuitive adjustment once in awhile..Version: 2.44.1131

Perfect concept - but they need to upgrade the food databaseI love the app and have been using for about 4 months now. The tried and true concepts about gaining muscle/losing weight and nutrition are to the point and easy but WOW this app is far behind in its food database. I constantly have to input new foods which isn’t as much of a problem on LoseIt and Myfitnesspal. I’d say I’m inputting new foods 3x the amount I had to on other apps. LoseIt even has an AI that will input everything for you just by directing the camera at the nutrition label instead of the barcode. Eventually I think I will switch back to a free app with a better food database now that I have the concepts down on how to calculate and track weight and adjust calories weekly. Inputting new foods just takes so much time and if the developers wanna keep their customers they have to stay ahead of the curve on ease of use and access. I will continue paying for the moment as I’m a big supporter of the people who created this app and hope they get the message to stay competitive in this app market..Version: 2.50.1538

Best tracking app hands down!!After having used other tracking apps for years, I’ve never been more glad that I switched to Carbon Diet Coach. It’s easy to use and the interface is simple. When getting started, the app asks multiple questions and then you establish your goal. Weekly check ins with your ‘coach’ mean the progress of your goal is assessed and macros are amended if required based on how you are tracking. The approach is scientific and takes the guess work out for you. Tracking macros has never been easier, and the results are real. Would give this app more than 5 stars if it was possible!.Version: 1.0.24

That is a SCAMAll the informations the provide you can find online for free. No recipes, no type of exercices, you pay a subscription for an automated calculator that you could find on google for FREE. I don’t recommend..Version: 2.46.1214

Many better apps out thereUser interface is not as clear. Can’t save meals, so you have to manually add everything (add yesterdays breakfast). Can’t enter specific number of grams, but rather have to add that 1 serving is 65 grams, so if you have 100 grams you have to do the math to find what fraction of a serving it is. The macro budget that the app creates doesn’t actually match the calories, so if you follow the macros, you’re over on calories! The list of foods isn’t as comprehensive as other apps either. Lot of hype, and not as good as even the free versions of some others..Version: 2.50.1538

Not made for NZI wouldn’t bother if you are in nz, you have to add in everything manually..Version: 2.49.1324

Lacking clarityI’m afraid it’s a bit trial and error to work out how this works and why some information is used and not other but the support will respond. Quite expensive for what it appears to do, but at least monthly subscriptions are possible to test it out..Version: 2.50.1538

Stay away there’s much better appsThis app is so basic it could be a spreadsheet. All manual data entry. The “coach” is just an algorithm that checks if you hit the intervals you yourself set. It didn’t read from my health data to create the plan. You cannot add new foods, only recipes, and the database is limited. And worst of all, they have no trial so now I wasted my money!.Version: 2.60.2354

Wanted to try something newI follow Layne Norton on Instagram and he has a lot of bravado about his knowledge and also his program. I generally don’t like his aggressive attitude online, but I love his science based approach and respect his in-depth understanding of the weight research as it is above and beyond what many other weight management coaches understand on a physiological level. I wanted to try his program because I thought it might be somehow different than other calorie restricted tracking apps. I thought it might take into account my overall hunger level, give me feedback on what foods I was tracking and make suggestions and even take into consideration my exercise as I feel that on days when I burn a lot of calories I feel extremely hungry the next day and have always wondered if I could do something different than just keep the exact same calorie intake after days where I exercise and do non-exercise (ie weight train and do heavy yard work). This app did none of that and I was really disappointed. I can count calories on my own without paying for the app. Maybe it is better suited for people who want to gain muscle or put on weight ? I didn’t feel that is was any more helpful than “MyFitnessPal” or other calorie tracking apps and cancelled my subscription..Version: 1.0.36

Not for meI heard one of the creators talking about this on the Huberman Lab podcast so I gave it a go, having used the free MyFitnessPal app for a while. I can’t see the benefit of this, and definitely not for £9.99 a month. I like the fact that MyFitnessPal takes exercise into account as you undertake it (noting that most exercise trackers do overstate the calories burned from exercise). However I’m a cyclist and often do a 4-6 hour ride, so my exercise isn’t a steady spread over the week. (Carbon just gives a daily calorie requirement based on levels of activity). I couldn’t see any smart recommendations in the 3 weeks or so I tried this, so I cancelled the subscription. In summary, not for me..Version: 2.50.1538

Going back to myfitnesspalI had high hopes for this. I think the interface is clean and it is easy to use. Ultimately myfitnesspal’s free edition is better IMO than this app which makes the monthly fee feel really steep. My major gripes: -recipe entry - one by one ingredient adding is inconvenient with no batch add option -food catalogue isn’t as extensive as MFP -no iPad version which would help with some of the data entry -macro / calorie suggestions via the “coach” - nothing groundbreaking here that you couldn’t find online yourself or with MFP.Version: 2.50.1538

Wanted to like itI wanted this app to work but it just didn’t meet my needs. Pros: macro counting. You can put in your specific goals Cons: Entering food consumption could be a drag. I wish there was a way to put in specific calories. The options for measuring food aren’t variable enough and it’s a guess. I realize Layne would say gets food scale, but I don’t have time to measure every little thing all day long. (Ie I uses teaspoons of something and only tablespoon is offered as a way to measure) My specific food may not be available for selection, but I don’t have time to put in all the data about it so sometimes I just want to put in calories or protein. The “coach” is a bit of joke. It asks did you meet your goals? Yes/no. If you hit “No” It basically responds “better luck next time”. Maybe not in those words, but that’s the interpretation. That’s it. Nothing to help you. Then you do it all over again next week. With the exact same outcomes. My least favorite part is that you can’t put in your workouts. I’m an endurance athlete. I need to be able to track my calories in and out. I can’t afford to go to low or I won’t have enough energy the following day. Being able to adjust the daily calorie needs based on activities is really important whether your trying to lose, maintain or gain. No two days are the same..Version: 2.50.1538

I like the idea of this appI really love the idea of this. Simple, user friendly ai that takes the leg work out of analyzing nutrition data and making adjustments (like you have to do in my fitness pal), but something is lacking. It seems that carbon doesn’t not utilize user data at all if the user was ‘not compliant.’ Carbon has me eating at around 1032 calories per day currently, & I strongly suspect that I need to be eating more than that. For the past 2 weeks, I’ve been eating around 1300 rather than 1032. When, check in rolled around, I marked ‘non compliant’ because thats close to 300 calories over the daily goal that carbon set for me. I've also logged my weight daily, and I’ve averaged -1lb per week in weight loss (when my goal is -.5) This is the disappointing part, after consistently logging calories, macros, weight, loosing more weight than intended, and completing the check ins, carbon doesn’t utilize the data (calories consumed if ‘non compliant’ and logged weight) to make adjustments if you select ‘non compliant’. Or maybe they do, but the “looks like things didn’t go as planned, let’s try again next time” (or something along those lines) doesn’t elude to the fact that they do. I don’t know if this is a development constraint or what, but I think if all of the data was utilized it would make this app so so much better..Version: 2.49.1324

Not worth the costI’ve been using chronometer (free) for years, my fitness pal (free) before that. I really need help losing some weight after a medical issue and I thought I’d try this- hoping it offered some kind of coaching/motivation etc. It has a smaller food library, no barcode scanner (a great feature chronometer has) and no way to track exercise. I have found myself wondering what exactly is supposed to make this better than free alternatives. Some folks do exercise enough that they need to adjust their calorie intake. If I run a marathon, 50k, 100k, or spend 3hrs training, I’m not keeping my daily totals to 1,600. That’s great for xt or rest days but there’s no accommodation for exercise within the app. TLDR: there are FREE options that are better and more fleshed out- chronometer being the best IMO. I’m going to keep trying to use this till my subscription ends and will update if I have misjudged..Version: 2.54.1956

Can’t add barcodesI’m in Canada, unable to scan barcodes. Not sure if location or country has anything to do with it. Haven’t been able to scan anything. Can be frustrating. Can scan the exact same ones to myfitnesspal..Version: 2.50.1522

Not good international capability.I purchased a monthly membership yesterday. Starting entering my foods and tried to scan products. Unfortunately the app doesn't have a big database and could not detect very popular brands of my country (New Zealand). MFP has never given me this issue, I will be returning to that. Have cancelled my subscription with carbon..Version: 2.52.1747

Paid for the app but rejected by Facebook groupPaid for this app and tried to join the online community. Answered the basic questions as requested e.g. “where did you hear about the app?” but told I couldn’t join with no reason given. If you’re looking for support/to be able to use the full features of this app (something that is crucial) I’d seriously suggest using a different app that you’re going to get your money’s worth from..Version: 2.58.2218

Terrific app, but buggyExcellent app in terms of usability and functionality, but I was logged out 3 days ago and cannot log back in. Having requested a password reset email several times nothing has been received so I’m stuck and have lost money. My only two options are to either suffer the loss and sign up again or just cancel and find another app..Version: 2.0.954

Good but frustratingHaving used MyFitnessPal, I find CDC has a far better Interface and the diet coaching is next level. My biggest frustration however is the food logging. It is absolutely atrocious, it cannot find simple foods and very little is found using the barcode scanner. It can lead to inaccurate logging and take too much time. Lucky I’ll it’s half the price of MyFitnessPal or I wouldn’t continue with CDC. PLEASE ADDRESS THE FOOD LOGGING….Version: 2.53.1936

Has great potentialFound the concepts of the app fantastic with adjustments of macros & changes based of feedback input into the app . But as another review has shown I agree that the food database is so poor. I had not one thing I eat show up on your database when tracking my calories whereas MyFitnessPal had everything in comparison. Adding everything manually every time just lead me to stop using the app which I’m still paying for which I believe you should have a free trial period to sample the app so I could’ve found this out before committing to a subscription. I sincerely hope that this improves as I will use the app once all its little flaws are fixed until then all the best with the app development.Version: 1.0.19
