✓ Great app, amazing customer service.Having great plans for eating healthy, my wife and I decided to incorporate technology. Deciding on a highly recommended app, crouton was what we’d use going forward. We weren’t disappointed! The app is easy to use, quickly adds recipes, and the folder system was a great way to add to a meal plan. We did hit a snafu after ordering the IAP (it’s an extremely small fee for a huge lifestyle change that the app offers). But after sending a message on a Saturday morning not expecting help until Monday or after, I was surprised to have received a response within a an hour or less promising to take a look at it. Later that evening the problem was resolved. Like the title, want to state again, this is a great app, and the customer service is absolutely amazing..Version: 2020.16.1

✓ Truly amazing applicationNavigating recipes hand-free is simply mind blowing! Gorgeous app, designed to feel at home on iOS. Ingesting recipes is painless with various options to scan text when adding cooking steps or ingredients. Would love to see additional export options. After investing the time to input all of my recipes into the app, it would be comforting to know I could extract them (in bulk, not one by one), and into a format which can be used elsewhere. ✓ HeavenThis is everything I have been wanting. I have recipes in binders sorted as best I can, recipes in my computer documents scattered everywhere and recipes I have emailed to myself. I like to use as little paper as I can and don’t like to print recipes out. Enter the Crouton app. Simple to use, paperless and works simultaneously on my Mac and iPhone. I can create folders and tags that allows me to categorize and file in various ways. My black bean soup recipe can go in both soups and beans folders plus have tags for vegetarian and vegan. I can import directly to the app from the internet recipes as well and have wonderful photos along with my recipes. I absolutely love this app. Thank you!.Version: 2022.14
✓ Why I would miss my phone…If I lost my phone, I could find other ways to call or email people, but this app is indispensable! I use this app every single day. I love how I can copy recipes I find online and easily paste them in this app. Also, I just scanned a recipe from a magazine into this app! Who would think it could be possible? I figured out that you have to scan ingredients and steps separately, but the learning curve was low. Also, you have to proofread, because as miraculous as this feature is, it still needs the user to help it out a little. I think there are features on this app I don’t even know how to use, and some day I’ll get around to trying them, but in the meantime I’m going to scan the recipes I use out of my cookbooks and then get rid of them! But a note to the developer: please don’t leave users high and dry like the developer of my other recipe app: I can’t access my recipes on that app any more because they won’t update the app for use in updated iOS. ✓ Perfect, perfect, perfect.I bought the app the other day after ages of pining for an actually decent recipe manager app. Some I’ve found in the past were actually good but they always had the downside of being absolutely vile in terms of design. I genuinely could not think of a feature that is even somewhat bad in Crouton. Everything is perfect. It wasn’t hard to beat the rest tbh given they were horrible but you have exceeded that so much. ✓ Closest to an Apple Recipe App you can getDesign language is very similar to Apple’s, it’s intuitive, you can scale recipes, easily convert between imperial & metric, easily manage multiple timers in app and import recipes super easily from websites and other sources. The one-time purchase is definitely worth it. There is a subscription service for their AI features but you can easily turn all of that stuff off in settings if you want it hidden away. My only real complaint is how the groceries system works. The lack of integration with Apple’s new groceries feature is annoying for me. I use the new feature all the time as it sorts things automatically and is better integrated in Apple’s ecosystem, but I cannot add to the Apple’s groceries list inside the app. I don’t know if this is something that is possible for Crouton to do, but if it is I would like to see it implemented. If Crouton cannot add groceries to Apple’s groceries list, than I would like to see similar functionality in Crouton..Version: 2023.12.7

There are so many neat features that seem trivial but make the user experience so much better than any alternatives; always-on whilst viewing a recipe, hands-free navigation, automatically suggesting an import based on the URL in your clipboard, syncing ingredients to your groceries list, quickly scaling up or down the recipe so you can easily make multiple portions; it goes on and on. ✓ Really lovelySimple UI, easy to import recipes, active developer, inexpensive, not a subscription - what’s not to love? I’ve tried Paprika in the past but couldn’t get past the somewhat dated UI. Mealime has been our go-to for meal planning but I felt boxed in to their recipes, unable to add our own. Crouton opens that up immensely, not only allowing recipes from Mealime to be imported, but from all major recipe sites. And it feels like it’s only getting better. Reviews from a year ago asked for features like multiple recipes per day in the meal calendar or iCloud sharing, and the developer has delivered on those. ✓ Hands down, best recipe appI was using Notion before this app to organize my recipes which was a huge pain, because I was manually entering all the details. Crouton makes it so much easier by detecting clipboard contents (containing a URL) and automatically importing everything, which then automatically gets categorized. Not to mention all the little details like starting a timer from within the recipe, and the in app grocery list. ✓ “The One”Rarely do I leave app reviews, but Crouton made the exception list. I have tested just about every recipe manager app there is; I used Paprika for years, tried Pestle, gave a few of the others a shot, etc. When I discovered Crouton it blew all of the others out of the water. From the native iOS look and feel, to the customization and support, this app has it all. The developer is also extremely responsive and passionate about his app, which is a huge factor when comparing apps that have similar functionality. ✓ Exactly what i've been looking for....with caveatsSo this app is exactly what i've been looking for, and easy way to store recipes in a structured way, to share with my family. But, although it does the simple things very well, there's a couple of issues i've had that have stopped me from giving it 5 stars. - When adding additional people to the Household sharing, I was having to delete and add all people again - the recipe ingestion is good, but could be better, or give a warning if there's a site that it typically doesn't work with. - I had a bug where it was continuously creating the "Groceries" reminder list even though i'd set it to a custom "Shopping" list - and i think the Meal plan feature is great, but needs some tweaking...like i dont think it should be the default landing page on open (Just an opnion) All in all i think it's a great app, probably just built by a single person, so i'm not holding too much hope for ongoing support, but there was no ongoing subscription fee...which was nice for a change :).Version: 2021.8
✓ Finally a good recipe replacement to NotesI randomly stumbled on this app on Mastodon and I’m very glad I did. It’s a lot better than most of the other ones I’ve tried that never stuck, so I finally replaced my big Recipes folder in Notes. Love that there’s a single in-app purchase for the core functionality, and not just a subscription. Though even the subscription is very reasonably priced, so I’m trying that out now as well (super appreciate the “why is this a sub” alert - great idea). My only major wish is an improved grocery UX. 1) I wish the keyboard would show up right away - the keypad seems redundant since the amounts are detected from text. 2) I want a + on the bottom. 3) Would _love_ to see auto-completion and auto-sorting like in the Grocery app (or even manual ordering for a start). ✓ Great, minus a few small things.Good work, it looks beautiful and its easy to use (love how the notes part of a recipe has a notepad background). The only thing I’d like to see improved is the ingredient and method scanner. With ingredient scanning it will sometime register the same ingredient twice. And also sometimes detect the measurement portion of an ingredient twice (For example, it had Tbsp in blue as the measurement, but it also had it in the text too) Really, I’d almost like it if I could manually tell it to try and scan, because the time it makes the most errors is when I am doing nothing, or gliding down between ingredients. As for the method scanner, the one issue is that when manually selecting the text area there is a limit to how small the scanned box can be. Meaning I had to include the 2nd step of the recipe in the scan itself, and then copy/paste to separate the first and second steps afterwards. -Overall awesome app, and those things aren't dealbreakers whatsoever as scanning is always a finicky thing..Version: 2020.12.1
✓ Terrific appI have used Paprika for years but am now in the process of transferring everything over to Crouton. It’s similarly attractive and many features are similar (eg importing from websites, scaling, metric/imperial conversion, search, folders, meal plan, grocery list) but Crouton has some great additional features that I find really helpful, especially when it comes to 1) cooking (shows one step at a time; can tap an ingredient to display the quantity) and 2) meal planning (eg. main recipe list shows no of servings and prep/cook time in addition to recipe name and photo; ‘random recipe’ feature). I also LOVE the Discover tab which lets you subscribe to recipe feeds and quickly import any that you like the look of. One other feature that I’d love would be some indicator of how long it’s been since I cooked a particular recipe, to make sure I’m not making the same few things over and over..Version: 2023.12.6

✓ Genuinely very goodThere’s so much lost potential out there with subpar apps that just don’t get the core problem and never solve it. There’s only a few handful of “essential” apps on my phone (and most aren’t even that great). This one goes straight to the top. Recipe scanning works very well, the way following a recipe breaks it into steps with multiple timers as live notifications is brilliant. The ingredient links in each recipe step is wonderful and. Even the wink your eye to move between steps - sounds gimmicky but I’ve lost count of the number of times I have to rely on my nose or elbows to awkward scroll just because of my greasy hands. I don’t know, I think the developers got this one right. It’s clearly a labour of love which comes across as a very good product. Also no subscription model (which I would haven never paid for because it simply doesn’t make sense for so many products out there). ✓ Everything I wanted in a recipe managerI use crouton purely to organise and display my recipes, and it does an incredible job. It can import a recipe from a website, break it into digestible steps, scale and convert the measurements to suit any number of people AND then generate a shopping list. And it does it all without feeling over complicated or difficult to use. To top it all off, last night I discovered it has FACE CONTROL. When viewing your receipt in the step-by-step format, just wink with one to go back a step and wink with the other to go forward a step. No more touching your tablet with greasy, wet hands that may or may not have just touched raw meat. Genius! I recommend this to anyone who uses a tablet to store and follow along with their recipes. Its flexibility for tagging and grouping recipes has helped tremendously when planning meals or as a quick reference. I'm more willing to share recipes now with the variety of elegant share features. For the features that aren't quite ideal, like importing recipes from a social media link, the developer acknowledges the needs and is swift to engage about a potential update in the future. I have used this app nearly every day as of recent, and at least once a week for the last year. ✓ Simple and clean!I have been using Recipe Keeper for some time now, and in comparison, this app has a MUCH better UI/design, is faster and more “native” to iOS. I love the minimal design but without sacrificing usefulness. Some features I need before I can actually leave behind Recipe Keeper for this app: - Family sharing (very important since cooking is a whole family affair) -a synced MacOS version (or some easy way to import websites that I find while browsing on the desktop, otherwise I have to do added steps of bookmarking on my Mac, then importing into the app on the phone) -multiple grocery lists (e.g., ability to make separate lists for Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Costco etc) or some sort of tag system to differentiate. Also grocery lists need to be synced with family members (eg, currently my family members use shared iOS notes bc it syncs super fast when we’re shopping together but in different aisles).Version: 2020.12

I have years of inefficiently managing my recipes under my belt.. from paper solutions to even using Trello to try to keep track/make weekly menus (never worked). But just discovered Crouton and couldn’t be more excited. I stumbled upon a recipe online and wanted to save it... suddenly Crouton popped up as a way of saving it. Automatically all the ingredients, steps AND photo + title etc were synced and imported into Crouton. What?! Lifesaver! Long gone are the days of importing photos and manually adding ingredients and steps, for most of my recipes. I’m super impressed. ✓ The Best Recipe App I’ve Found!This is the most efficient and cost-effective recipe app I have used. I have tried (& paid for) Paprika, Any List, Grocery, and SO many others. I went to each for the ease of a particular feature (or a few) and they always managed to either change/break the feature, have another feature that made the app frustrating to use, or require a subscription to be able to use it. Crouton beautifully imports recipes from 99% of the sites I get recipes from. It brings over most of the information I need. I really only need to manually put in what I want in the notes. The last app I used did not have scaling and it was SO FRUSTRATING. The fact that it can also AUTOMATICALLY convert standard to metric within the recipe and the hands free features are GAME CHANGERS! I love that it also has the option to show the ingredients you need at that particular step while looking at the instructions. And so many ways to sort-folders, tagging, smart folders (with more than one sort option!). For an app that is billed as a “hobby,” you can tell this is someone who cooks themselves and put so much thought into the app because they use it themselves. ✓ Phenomenal Recipe appWhen quarantine hit during 2020, I started picking up doing cooking and trying out different recipes pretty much daily. This resulted in my safari bookmarks getting cluttered with recipes of all kinds. After I saw a Reddit post mentioning this app I gave it a try, and I must say it’s by far the best recipe app I’ve ever used. When you copy a link it automatically suggest creating a recipe card from it, you can sync it with your reminds list so that you can easily make a grocery list, and you can create meal plans. I migrated from Paprika which was fine but felt clunky and couldn’t abide the pricing for each device. ✓ Great app, would like to set default units to metricFantastic app. It's extremely handy that it syncs across Mac, iPad and iPhone so I can curate my recipes on my Mac and then follow the recipe on my iPad. Importing recipes from websites has been fairly accurate. However it seems to have a weird habit of converting some volumes (e.g. tablespoons or teaspoons) to weight, which isn't very helpful. Thankfully it's a relatively quick fix. My main wish is that there was an option to set a default unit (e.g. metric) so all recipes were automatically converted instead of having to select it for each recipe..Version: 2024.1.2

The step-by-step is very clear, the feature to follow the receipt with gestures is a fun addition but not perfect. The only thing I’m missing is the ability to rate recipes. I like that I can type recipes in Arabic and the formatting won’t mess up as with other apps. I love that I can organize my recipes in folders, move the recipes across folders with ease, create a weekly menu and the app will even generate a randomize menu for you. The one thing I am missing is the ability to share recipes in the app with others.
