Dark Noise: Ambient Sounds for Negative User Reviews

I bought this app. Now I have to pay again for life subscription? As others have mentioned… you can get much better quality audio from Apple Music. They should have offered a lifetime to current customers who bought the app already… perhaps a discount like other developers have done to show value in their current customers 👎🏼.Version: 3.2.2

EXPENSIVEIt’s ok, lots of options, but it’s now incredibly expensive. Many other apps out there basically doing the same thing. For what it is, it’s hugely over priced at $80 for one time payment and $30 annually..Version: 3.0.0

A scamThis app looks like it will let you create noises, and mix cool sounds. Its only 50 noises and the only thing you can do with them is put play and listen the noises. All thar for $15. i feel robbed.Version: 2.6.0

This app woke me upThe way it mixes sounds together is awful and jarring. In addition the sound quality of said sounds is poor. I was drifting off the sleep after a few minutes and one of the sounds just changed so dramatically I woke up with a mini anxiety attack. It’s not a constant sound at all and that’s fine to a degree to make it realistic but after 5 minutes there shouldn’t be a DRAMATIC change in the sound that’s already poor quality. Odd though because I remember this app being great..Version: 2.6.0

Disappointed by the sound libraryDefinitely a quality app, but I was expecting more variety in the sounds being offered. I will never listen to a microwave or a vacuum running. I was expecting more nature sounds etc. Too many man made categories with sounds I’ll lever listen to..Version: 2.5.1

Not worth it honestlyI thought it looked pre g and I was willing to pay $6 for it but in the end I don’t reckon it’s worth what you pay, the sounds have little bass and are quite overpowering making it hard to find relaxing. It’s still a good idea and has a nice variation of sounds but nothing special..Version: 1.3

Do bugs need squishing? It seems a while ago that the app was updated. Since I bought it, I’ve mostly enjoyed it. Lately, the sounds have stuttered, leaving gaps that interrupt the whole concept of peaceful noise..Version: 2.4

No Google Home casting integrationOnly way to push the sound to other devices is using AirPlay. With a home built with Google Home speakers it’s so frustrating..Version: 2.3

Disappointing but fixableThe sounds are good but the whole “make your own” option is broken. When adding sounds and listening to the thing it sounds really nice, but saving it and then playing it out of the edit menu makes it immediately go all choppy and staticky and just painful to listen too. I made a mix of Brown noise, heavy rain, dripping rain, rain on a tent, and a creek which sounded beautiful. I saved it and then listened to it again..... it felt like I was plunging a cheese grater through my ears and to my brain. The make your own mix feature needs serious work. What’s the point of making your own mixes for your needs if you can only listen to it in the edit menu without it having its way with your earholes like a colony of randy insects. It’s painful to listen to out of the edit menu. That’s what kept me from being able to give 5 Stars as the individual tracks are lovely and in the edit menu a personal mix is Divine, but saving it and listening to it in the list of favourites and individual sounds turns it into the worst thing to listen to besides a certain orange cretin running a certain country. This needs fixing as asking £6 for this is well worth it when you can truly listen to your mixes without having to go into the edit menu or create a new one, but a bit of a slap to the face when your sleep mix suddenly goes from beautiful and divine to the most awful noise since my sisters yappy dog with a screech that cut through all forms of defence and hit horribly on a visceral level..Version: 2.2

Missing featuresI don’t understand. The white noise app is free yet mixes with your music but this doesn’t? The sounds aren’t any richer than what you get from Portal and that you can mix with music too. The favourites option is easy to use and handy but not enough for the six quid asking price..Version: 2.2

Good app, butGood app, but I never had to pay for an app twice even when logged in with same Apple ID. Contacted company they just said the obvious “if you were logged in with the same Apple ID you shouldn’t have to pay twice. I had in on my iPhone wand wanted it on my iPad but the system didn’t detect I purchased it before. Plus most paid apps tell you within the app you paid for it or are a premium user.. no follow up from developer, sad with such a good app..Version: 2.7.3

Too expensiveRequires subscription of $30 per year for anything other than white noise and rain..Version: 3.2.3

Poor selection and executionDisappointing from the start as the brown noise is horribly high pitched, it is essentially white noise yet that is even higher in this app. Most of the sounds are so aggressive and constant: the water ones are like you are in a flood or rapids, no tranquil and relaxing as in real life; the purring cat sounds like a mechanical cat on steroids powered by an engine. One of the only good ones is the spaceship as that is what brown noise should actually be. Would be nice if there were presets as well as making your own mixes. Not great for £9 so requested a refund..Version: 2.6.0

Good albeit limitedI have a tough time focusing and this app paired with a set of noise cancelling headphones does help quell external distractions. The caveat being that only a few noises included truly resonate with me. YMMV in terms of how useful the provided library is..Version: 2.3

[Almost] all sounds are monaural[2.0 update below] The app design is lovely, and the sounds are of a fine quality … except there aren’t any stereo sounds as far as I can tell. I’m a sounds app connoisseur (yes, that’s a thing), and of the six sound apps I use, even the free ones, this is the only one I have that has no stereo sounds. (Even the color noise sounds can be produced in stereo.) So the sounds will be fine if you’re far from the source, but if you’re close by they’ll sound a bit flat and less immersive. I’m hoping the “more to come!” promise means this may be addressed in the future. 2.0 update: this version introduces some new sounds, but after auditioning them I’ve found only two that are in stereo: Lake, and Ship Deck. For me, an app centered around monaural ambient sounds is like a camera app that can take only black and white photos. But YMMV..Version: 2.0

DisappointedI was really hoping to like this app. However, I was instantly let down by the audio quality of the recordings. First off, the audio sounds very heavily compressed. In some of the louder sounds like Thunderstorm or River, you can hear the artifacts that you only get in a low bit rate audio file. It’s incredibly distracting and unpleasant. Next, the recordings have a ton of noise which should have been filtered out. In the Crickets sound, there is a ton of noise in the lower frequency range. It’s so loud that it almost drowns out the actual sounds of the crickets. Finally, the recordings are just difficult to mix. This is partly due to the previous point of unwanted noise filling out the frequency spectrum. If I want to mix Windy Trees with Crickets, it becomes a muddy mess. The lower register noise from the Crickets competes with the low wind from the trees. The upper mids of the crickets is overpowered by unwanted white noise from the trees. I do enjoy the functionality and design of the app, but I would not recommend this to anyone that values high fidelity and properly mixed audio..Version: 2.5.1

Great app, but needs improved audio qualityI’ve been very pleased with Dark Noise. Really helpful for sleep inducing ambient sound. The variety is solid. Good design. I especially like the ability to create custom sounds by combining the stock sounds and adjust their individual volume to make a highly customized mix. It even synchronizes my custom mixes and settings through iCloud to the other devices, including the macOS version. I would rate it five stars, but the audio samples need to be stereo or surround sound to really deliver realistic ambience..Version: 2.6.0

Siri Shortcuts no longer workShortcuts stopped working a few weeks ago when my iPhone updated. When it worked, it was buggy. Sometimes just saying the phrase worked and sometimes Siri would say, “ready to play ...” but never started the requested sound. I contacted the developer and did not get a response. I dislike having to play it from my phone and hand off to my HomePod using airplay enough that I’m ready to stop using the app altogether..Version: 2.7.4

New pricing is ridiculousI would be happy to pay for lifetime but it would have to be much cheaper. Currently looking for an alternative to this once simply beautiful app..Version: 3.2.6

Not nearly enough calm sounds for meI’ve owned a bunch of these apps over the years. This one I just bought on sale, because it seems to have a gorgeous UI and is actively in development, where so many have gone abandoned. Now I can only speak for myself, but surely most people want this for relaxation? Well, relative to other apps I’ve used, here are some examples - the wind chimes are far too busy, the streams are far too furious, there’s way too much splashy movement going on in that lake! You can lower the volume, but it doesn’t solve it, these samples are just too hectic. It needs many more CALM, simple, repetitive recordings. Then it’ll be great. Who finds listening to a lawnmower relaxing? No idea! But that’s kind of loveable..Version: 2.4

Sounds too compressed..I bought this thinking I’d be hearing some quality white noise especially for the premium price… but ….Sounds toooo compressed… especially now that you can find lossless white noise on Apple Music. Just takes some searching.. I’m a bit disappointed that they’re charging at such a premium. Only pro is that the white noise choices are all neatly organized but I can’t even set it as a scene. But at least has Siri support..Version: 2.5.1

Wanted to like it but iPhone version is buggyThe iPad version works great and does everything it’s supposed to do. The iPhone version however is basically broken. UI elements disappear (like the list of sounds vanishes and won’t come back until I force close the app), and it freezes when trying to a access the settings menu. I think the app shows promise but I needed both the iPad and iPhone version to work reliably, so unfortunately I had to request a refund..Version: 1.3

Keeps asking for a reviewVery annoying and disruptive. Makes using App difficult. There should be a way of stopping this very annoying behaviour..Version: 3.1.3

Well built, poor quality soundsI downloaded this app from widget ad that showed this app as a sample. I instantly loved the UI and the capability to function with shortcuts. But the sound that works best for me(airplane interior) is apparently a very short audio loop with just enough pollution that it keeps me awake! I can hear a faint clicking noise that occurs every few seconds and for a neurodivergent mind, I fixated on the noise. I wish there was better quality audio sampling..Version: 3.2.5

Nice But....The audio is in mono. Would not have bought it if I had known. It's a shame because the interface and widgets are very good..Version: 2.4

Any normal fan musicI want normal fan music.Version: 2.5.1

Disappointed overallNothing to add.Version: 2.2

What the hellI bought this app and now I have to subscribe..Version: 3.1.1

Mixes not workingMaybe it’s me, but after a while the mixes I made just dont work. The single sounds do and some mixes. But for some reason I can’t get them to work and have to start again. I did send a message on the app but heard nothing back.Version: 3.1.3

Scam. Always Trying to Rip Me Off.I like the app. The problem is that the app conveniently forgets quite often that you already have an active subscription. The app then locks you out of the premium features, because it wants you to spend money to sign you up for a more expensive subscription. Therefore, I have stopped using the app and canceled my subscription. I refuse to use any app that has a primary focus of using me to make money. Really sad that such a great app has as a primary focus scamming subscribers out of their money. If I could give the app no stars I would. I mean what is the point of paying a subscription to have access to premium features when the app will the next day conveniently forget that you have an active subscription and want you to sign up for an even more expensive subscription..Version: 3.2.6

CHEATED by the developers, reporting this to AppleI paid for this app already. My family became dependent on it for sleep sound. Tonight, the app informed me that I am no longer a paying user, that I must now pay, AGAIN, every year, to continue using an app that I already bought. This is a violation of section 3.1.2(a) "Permissible uses" in Apple's App Store Review Guidelines: "If you are changing your existing app to a subscription-based business model, you should not take away the primary functionality existing users have already paid for." I'm reporting this app to Apple. If you want more of my money then you need to make another app that I want to buy. You can't just charge me for the same app over and over after I already paid you for it..Version: 3.0.0

Underwhelming, not worth the priceI bought this looking for some high quality sounds so I could study and sleep more efficiently. This app seems great on premise, with both iOS and macOS support. £9 is a bit steep but I took the plunge. The sound selection is terrible. Less than 10 of the sounds are actually listenable, and only 3 of them are any good in my opinion. Why would anyone ever want to listen to a hoover or lawnmower? Not only that, the audio quality isn't good, especially compared to the competition. The icon on macOS is pixelated and low quality. No sounds added in ages. I recommend searching for an alternative..Version: 2.7.3

Overall a nice app but its not without issues.I’ve been using this app for about 2 months now and although I love the overall design of the app, there are a couple of frustrating issues I’ve been unable to resolve. First, I tried creating a Siri shortcut to start playing Brown Noise on my HomePod but Siri only responds that I need to continue on my iPhone. Second, the app will randomly stop on my HomePod, usually during the middle of the night causing me to wake up. I think its a great app but until these issues are resolved I’ll be looking for something else..Version: 1.3

Please figure out stereo image1) There's only one sound "Lake" that has it. The others are very narrow positioned so sound tiring and disturbing at some point. 2) Could you please explain how to create a sound mixe? It's stated in the app description but there is no clear way to do it in the app. As this app doesn't suppose to do much these subtle things are very crucial to back up a high £9 price..Version: 2.6.0

Sound quality is offI agree with scampercom about the sound quality being off. The sounds sound thinned out. I use in-ear headphones (not Apple’s) to help blocked out co-workers when trying to concentrate. I usually listen to music but sometimes that can get tiresome and I prefer white noise. This app, though I really like the selection, probably wouldn’t help. The sound quality from other apps like Noisli and Noizio are better, with Wildfulness being the absolute best with 3D sound. I can mix sounds with Noisli but the app hasn’t been updated in a year or so and you can hear the looping. Noizio is updated, has more sounds than Noisli, but you can hear the looping and it requires so many in app purchases to expand the library. Wildfulness, Wildfulness 2, and it’s 3rd counterpart Sonas Island (or something like that) has beyond amazing sound quality. You can hear the looping with a few sounds but it’s biggest flaw for me is the lack of variety. It’s ALL nature sounds. There are other apps I have tried but most were unnecessarily complicated or not worth mentioning. This app is good for it’s simplicity, ease of use, features, and variety, but unfortunately not it’s sound quality..Version: 1.1
