Jumpspeak | Language Learning for Negative User Reviews

So buggyI want to love it but it’s SO buggy. Doesn’t give you a long time to retry words you get wrong as it works off a three second timer. There’s a delay when you hit the microphone button to speak. This delay sometimes causes the entire conversation AI to get stuck and the only way to fix it is by exiting the entire lesson which loses all progress. For whatever reason, “Y” is programmed as a different word (you can tell when you tap on it to hear how to say it) so it always gets marked as incorrect. There’s been a lot of times I was on a roll and got so frustrated that I had to just stop trying to learn for the day..Version: 0.12.1

Does not support SpanishIt only covers Latin American spanish not real Spanish from Spain. So no good for me!.Version: 4.0.3

Good Idea, But Finicky and Prone to FreezingI really like the idea of Jumpspeak as an app, however, the execution leaves a bit to be desired. Well, the idea of conversing in someone real time with an AI is appealing, many of the conversations devolved into over exaggerating pronunciations to get the app to recognize what I am saying. For example, I have had to repeat the same phrase more than a dozen times to get the app to recognize that I’m saying “hablo” (the correct response) instead of “habla” (what it keeps thinking I’m saying), or similar. Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of progression in the lessons so much as the lessons seem to be structured to practice a specific situation that the learner has already experienced, perhaps, in another app or classroom. Overall, this might be a good tool to practice or refresh, but isn’t great to learn the first time..Version: 3.5.0

Not really a 100-day trialI normally don’t pay for apps, but I was excited to try this one given the 100-day trial period. I should’ve known better when I had to pay up front to use the app, but I gave it a try anyway. App was kind of glitchy, but had its strengths. After a few days, I knew the app wasn’t for me. Tried to get my money back but no such luck. Filed an inquiry online using the chat option and still no response from anyone (this was a week ago). Wish there was greater transparency about the trial period not being a trial period..Version: 3.6.1

Buyer bewarePurchased a ‘lifetime’ membership, a master class, and w/o understanding the additional charge, ‘live tutoring’, but all the while keeping in mind that there is a 100-day ‘risk-free’ trial. Somewhere in there I apparently missed that the live tutoring only has a 7-day trial and is also ‘non-refundable’, at $295month Before I knew this, on day 5, I tried and was unable to log into the live tutoring app because I was prompted to pay. I let it go and tried again a few days later w/same results. Frustrated w/the experience I wrote to cancel and was informed that my live tutoring purchase, which billed $295 on my card w/o my knowledge, was nonrefundable. Through back and forth I ended up canceling everything. I had to implicitly ask for a refund on my my original $249 lifetime membership and the $59 masterclass. $599 purchase, where I was led to believe I had a “100-day risk free trial’ To date I have not received my refund although I got an email saying the $245 & $59 refunds are ‘in process’. Apparently I’m out $295 for a service I never was able to access or use. Clearly Jumpspeak banks on customer misunderstanding. I’ve never experienced a business that would not refund a product or service that was not accessible or used, when cancelled days after purchase..Version: 4.0.0

10 minute try outFirst impressions are not good, doesn’t seem to be intuitive or flow. Didn’t register my voice at all on just one sentence, but fine on the others. I was hoping it’d be better. I pay for and use the big competitor (DL) every day, but thought this might help me in a more conversational way, I’ll keep trying for a few days and will report back.Version: 3.7.4

French; lots of potential but not quite thereDownloaded the app for French last week. Love the constant ability to speak as compared to other apps. The AI Bot has some great potential for practicing free form dialogue. Here are my issues/suggestions for improvement: 1. I can not get the translation to appear in the Speaking & Reading Mode despite changing settings to “auto translate”. (Ironically, the reading function does work in immersive mode). 2. Slowing down the speech doesn’t work in Speak mode. Makes it hard to catch what the chatbot is saying especially as the translation isn’t coming up. 3. The voice recognition is frustrating. Seems to stumble on single syllable words (eh, eu, y, a,) and brand names (Uber). 4. It would be nice to be able to go back and read a transcript or save the recordings of what I’m saying. Without that, I feel like I’m just reading out loud without full context. Sometimes I learn a phrase but there’s no chance to go back to it. 5. I don’t see the course work in the app for French. AI Chatbot/Tutor also doesn’t save the dialogue so can’t go back to learn from it. 6. I saw the demo video showed lessons in verb conjugation/. Not seeing that with French version. Great potential and feels more relevant than DuoLingo or Babbel but still has a way to go to be fully robust learning tool..Version: 3.7.3

100 day trial period is a conDon’t download this app if you want to take advantage of their 100 day money back guarantee. Apple refuse to refund through their claims centre and Jumpspeak customer service say they aren’t able to refund if the app was downloaded via the App Store. Absolute con..Version: 3.7.4

Terrible voice recognitionI get you want to have accurate shaping of the pronunciation of the words you’re learning but there’s zero feedback in why something isn’t being accepted. Frequently I’m getting words rejected and sometimes when I try to repeat a phrase it’s different words in the phrase that are being rejected. I’ve tried using the app una very quiet place ti ni avail. Same results. It’s extremely frustrating to always be focused on whether or not the app is going to accept the words or not rather than focusing on the language learning. Also when I arrow my ti review the missed words at the end of the lesson the app completely freezes. Nothing works. I’m using an iPhone 14 pro. This isn’t a hardware issue. I made the mistake of prepaying for the lifetime subscription during the holiday sale. I will be asking for a refund. It’s unusable..Version: 3.4.0

All smoke and mirrors, NO substance and probably all paid or fake reviewsWow. If I wanted to spend the absolute minimum amount of time building an app just so I could promote it as an affordable option and then just flood unwitting victims with up sells costing several times more than the original offer, which after skipping and bypassing reveal only a shell of an app with horrible voice detection, no formal instruction or guidance, just a bunch of AI chats that will jumble languages together you aren’t even trying to study, not recognize even basic spoken words in the language of study, and ZERO of the promised value, THIS IS THE APP I WOULD BUILD. You will get ZERO guided instruction, ZERO videos onto watch, ZERO constructive feedback other than the AI ‘critique’ of the horrible speech to text feature that got more of the spoken words wrong than it got right. PLEASE don’t waste your time on this app or this company. Their objective is to extract the maximum amount of money from you as possible and no focus on providing actual value - at least if you’re not independently wealthy and can’t afford to pay - I’m pretty sure all the upsell attempts added up to well over $1K/year. Possibly multiples of that. We’ll see how ‘risk free’ their refund offer actually is..Version: 3.7.4

Buggy but promiseJapanese: AI asked me for my name. The suggested response was “yes, thank you” This app feels and looks amazing. Once the bugs are worked out and conversation is fluid and understanding, I will be purchasing a year membership easily..Version: 3.6.1

Doesn’t workTested the app without paying and using one of the three free conversations. I was using the japanese ai program. The ai understood what I was saying after a few attempts, however, when providing responses their english translations were wildly inaccurate. Additionally the english translations provided eventually ended up blatantly wrong by just copying the previous sentence despite it saying something completely different. Once I ended a conversation and it gave me its “feedback” it started critiquing its OWN sentences?? It had nothing to say about mine. For context I’m conversationally fluent in Japanese. Disappointed in this app and its price point. Do not pay until you try, don’t fall for their trap. Maybe it will get better one day, or maybe their other languages work better. But considering it was evaluating its own sentences I doubt that would be a language specific issue..Version: 3.7.4

So slow!!So far I have been enjoying Jumpspeak. It’s definitely different from any other language app I’ve tried. It’s like talking to a chat bit in Spanish with suggest lines already there for you to say and test your accuracy. It’s cool, I can see how it will be beneficial with annunciation but I don’t see how it will help you figure out on your own how to speak independently. I can see this app becoming addicting and something I wouldn’t be able to put down but the loading time between each line is sooo slow. You can’t continue at the pace of a regular conversation. It’s too slow for me to want to put up with for very long, so I get off sooner that I really would like just because I’m frustrated.Version: 0.8.9

Charged for free trialThis company should focus on getting the free trial right before all the upsell during the sign up. Made the whole experience feel shady. I was charged for what I believed to be a free trial. Ability to obtain support seems none existent. Functionality of app itself seems weak although the concept seemed good it just didn’t match up to expectations..Version: 1.3.0

Version 4.0.0 broke a good programI logged on for the first time since the v. 4.0.0 update went live. The new user interface broke the conversational flow of the app. What’s worse, the four categories don’t load anything when tapped. The app is completely useless to me now, and they still haven’t fixed the voice recognition algorithm. I want my money back!.Version: 4.0.0

No Castilian Spanish ☹️Like so many of these apps that come out of the US, it only teaches Latin American Spanish, give me a Castilian Spanish course and I’m in!.Version: 3.7.4

Do not recommendFirstly the user interface of this app is terrible and as other users report, the speak detection is really bad compared to other apps. Secondly they state they have a 100 day guarantee for refunds however then refuse to give you a refund themselves and their app is not set up on the App Store to process refunds. Waste of time and money..Version: 3.7.3

Frustrating and faultyI used this app and tried to cancel at the end of the trial period. They were not helpful in cancelling my subscription. I keep trying to use it but it’s more frustrating then functional. Full of glitches. It stalls a lot and doesn’t always recognize your voice properly. Some text does not display in full so there is no way for you to get it right when words are missing. Great idea, but poorly executed..Version: 2.2.5

Fraudulent paymentsI got this app with an offer of £45 for the year. Today, only two weeks of using the app I see £229 removed from my account. Highly concerning and do not trust this app..Version: 3.7.3

Entire product hidden behind a paywallIt’s impossible to even try the app without paying at least $40 for a three-month pass. Absolutely ludicrous to not offer a few levels as a free trial (or a free trial period)..Version: 3.6.1

Potential? Yes; Execution? NoThis app has great potential for teaching someone Spanish. Fun whimsical scenarios keep it interesting. The problem is the execution! I wish I had not paid $44 for 3 months. The app freezes and frequently needs to be shutdown and restarted. Trying to learn when it doesn’t work is pretty frustrating. The app doesn’t say pronunciation back to you no matter how many times you’ve got it wrong. Keep saying wrong and getting Nice try. No matter how many times you say it wrong in a row the likelihood you are going to stumble upon the correct pronunciation is between slim and none… because at some point you’re going to be using a different language venting your frustration. In the review (after the lesson) the sound button doesn’t more 3/4 of the time before it freezes and forces you to restart but passes you on the lesson no matter how well or poorly you did. There are certain words in the scenarios no matter how many times you say them, change pitch or inflection, loud or quiet, hold your device close to your face or far away and it simply does not recognize you are saying the words. For instance ¿Què? Or any word that follows it. I could say the entire sentence and the app tells me I said one word..Version: 3.1.0

MehThis app is okay for learning pronunciation and tuning your ear for Spanish. But not so much for people who are trying to learn how to have real time conversations. It would be different if the app asked questions and you actually had to respond in your own words in the language you are trying to learn, not fill in blanks or choose which one is right. Also the app seems to have a hard time actually hearing or picking up what one is actually saying. Even with correct pronunciation, the app will still tell you that you got the word wrong. Not terrible, but definitely room for improvement.Version: 0.8.9

Good concept medium executionI really like the concept, but as other users have said, the speech recognition often doesn't work. You need to be in a quiet space, wait a moment before you answer, and speak very loudly and clearly. You can't respond in a conversational tone. Also, I will say that it starts off at a fairly advanced level. I did four years of highschool Spanish, so that's my baseline. I started on 'newbie', and I felt like it was pretty advanced, so I went down to experience 'zero'. It's still frustrating to get full, quick sentences that I don't understand instead of slower, less wordy conversational prompts. If the software worked better, and there was a truly elementary level for beginners, the app would be perfect. As it stands, it's okay..Version: 3.5.2

Nice approach, latest update needs fixingI like the learning approach. Please fix the latest update. The voice stops working after the first scoring of my pronunciation and the exercises go terribly slow..Version: 0.8.2

Crashes non stopI give up. This app has potential to be amazing but it crashes all the time and I often have to re record things 5 times before it registers..Version: 0.15.1

How do I get rid of this app from my phone?Only option once downloaded is to sign in. No way to delete. App does not appear on screen, and seems impossible to delete. Way too much admin to see if it’s any good. More info and samples should be in the ads. Content sounds terrible from other reviews. Please help me delete this..Version: 3.7.4

Speech recognition needs improvementI love the premise of this app but having tried the first lesson, I have had great trouble getting the app to recognise my speech. I am in Section 3 of Duolingo Italian and my accent is fine, under the exact same conditions (wearing headphones and walking along a road) Duolingo has no trouble understanding my spoken answers. I also tried in a quiet space and had the same problems, even for simple phrases like “sei lontano” I’d like to sign up but at this stage it’s too frustrating.Version: 3.7.4

App straight up does not workMicrophone does not pick up speech. This is despite granting access to mic and deleting app and reinstalling. Useless..Version: 0.10.8

ScammedI am extremely disappointed in this app and this company. I saw an ad on Christmas Day for a discounted sign up price. I was excited to try out the app at the price of $59. After signing up, it takes you through a list of “add ons” that I quickly went through with no intention of subscribing to. A week later my card was charged $295, almost six times the amount I had originally paid. I reached out to customer service who said I was signed up for a tutoring service that I had not used nor will use. I told them there must be a misunderstanding because I was never aware of signing up for this service and had not used it. I asked if I could be refunded under the circumstances. After going back and forth over email THEY REFUSED TO REFUND ME! They said they would cancel the service but that they would not refund me. The company took $295 from my card on file without me knowing. I am a teaching assistant at a university training to be a professor. Many of my students need to fulfill a language requirement to complete their degree. I was hoping to share this app as a helpful tool to many of them. However, like them, I will REFUSE because I cannot lead my students to support an unethical company like Jumpspeak.Version: 3.7.4

Stop asking how my lesson wasThere needs to be an opt out in the settings for rating your lesson each time. It’s super annoying. There’s plenty of other ways you could be compiling experience data - stop being lazy and forcing the user to do your dirty work. Literally can’t tell if I like the app yet, because I find this aspect so tedious/annoying..Version: 4.0.6

No free versionWould have liked a free version before having to spend money for the pleasure of looking at whether its suitable. Also didnt like how I only could speak responses and couldnt type them.Version: 3.7.4

So bug ridden it’s embarrassingThis app has been following me around the internet for ages. I decide to install it and pay for it. Possibly the worst app i’ve ever used. Not only does it hang at the end of an exercise, it has no ability to recognise accents and doesn’t accept my responses. ***it sounds impressive with AI etc but it’s really nothing special **.Version: 0.11.2

Scam!I “subscribed” for the free trial, immediately went into my subscriptions and cancelled (as I always do to avoid forgetting) and GOT CHARGED $100 at the end of my “free trial” and it automatically renewed for a year. WARNING THERE IS NO FREE TRIAL ON THIS APP!!!!!.Version: 3.7.4

Frustrating inconsistency with voice pickupI have been using for a few days. I can see wonderful potential but I find the voice pick of very inconsistent. It stops working part way through using the app even though nothing g has changed with my speaking or environment. When it works, it’s great but inconsistency will see me using the 100 day refund I think. I will continue to give it a go because I REALLY want this to work. I’ve been trying to teach myself Spanish for a decade and can read it well enough now but never get to speak it. I’m really hoping this will be my breakthrough. Please start working all the time !!.Version: 3.4.6

New features don’t work. No access to help on support pageSo I was excited about the updated features making it similar to another language app I use until I got to the write section and the screen is blank. I tried closing out and logging back in nothing worked. I then wanted to reach out to help/support only to find out the website doesn’t have that option only a bunch of random questions and responses but no place to ask for assistance. Idk I’ll give it a few days to be fixed or I’ll just get my money back..Version: 4.0.0

Irritating chime makes me want to abandon lessonsI did my first lessons on Jumpspeak today, and they were fantastic. Except, for an irritating chime after each, and every action is completed. This will keep me from being able to practice this at work, or anywhere, where there are other people around. Not to mention it is simply just an irritating tone, and no way to turn it off. It’s completely unnecessary. We are not Pavlov‘s dogs. We are trying to learn. Can you imagine if every time you did something in the real world and completed a task there was a chime? I hope the app developers do something so that you can turn the noise off..Version: 4.0.3

Strong potential but not there yetI’ve been using Jumpspeak daily for the past couple months and the potential for a great app is there, but it just falls short in key ways. The stories and scenarios are great and I love that there are numerous levels and stories within levels (I was learning Spanish). But the voice recognition is quite faulty. One either has to have *perfect* pronunciation for words to be caught (e.g. it worked better for my native Spanish-speaking husband) or it would just not pick up random words. I’ve deleted the app and maybe will check back in a few months to see if it’s improved since I paid for a full year. Really hope the dev team can improve this app since there really is a lot of potential..Version: 3.4.3

Good to… very badStarted well at mid levels. Now at the B2 and C1 stages and things don’t work properly. Most annoyingly my Italian interlocutor sometimes speaks to me in poor English not in Italian! There also seems to be no difference between reading and immersive mode and in neither can see any text to read, just a pointless speech graphic. The speech recognition can also be very patchy. Frustrating. Was enjoying it. Not any more..Version: 3.7.3

Doesn’t even let you try anything without paying a minimum of $60!!I was eager to try this after seeing it advertised, but when I opened the app to try it out, it literally doesn’t allow you to do anything on it all all, even in trial form, without an upfront payment of $60 minimum with plans going all the way to $250! I’d be willing to pay for a language app if it was good, but not willing to pay upfront before u even get to see what this app offers! Makes me very suspicious of what this app may or may not offer, since they don’t want to reveal anything without a payment. They offer money back guarantee but it’s always a headache and hassle to try to get app companies to refund, so I’d only be willing to try this if it allowed a trial period and then payment if I decide I like it and want to use it, like nearly all other apps on the planet offer….Version: 3.7.4

No free trialI downloaded the app, but before trying it, I have to pay £70 for one year’s subscription. I’m not sure if I would get this back if I tried it for a week, then decided it was not for me. Too much of a risk with the poor reviews, sorry..Version: 0.13.2

Glitchy, no free trial, not worth the moneyI regret paying for this app, it is really glitchy, only teaches South American Spanish and a lot of the features you would expect it to have are missing. I asked for a refund within my 30 day period and the customer service team repeatedly kept trying to convince me to stay instead of just returning my payment. I didn’t have time to keep going back and forth so I lost my money. It has definitely not been worth the money and I would advise anyone to use the following apps instead: Busuu, Kwiziq, Speechling, Lingvist, Duolingo. Don’t waste your money.Version: 1.1.1

MembershipHow do i cancel membership?.Version: 0.13.1

Needs some improvementI just did the 3 free lessons. I do like the conversational style of learning. I’ve been using “the other app” for years and learned words in these 3 lessons I’ve never seen or heard before. Maybe it’s different when you pay for it, but there was no way I could find that would assist you in learning how to say a new word so I was essentially left to guess. Several times I’d have to skip something because it wasn’t registering what I was saying. The words would turn green except one or 2 then when I’d go back to say them, words that were green would change back and I’d never make it through the whole sentence. When I clicked review to learn how to say what I missed it didn’t register a single word I said, so I’d have to listen to the sentence then hit skip to make it to the next one. I’m not really interested in paying $80+ for an app that doesn’t work well..Version: 3.7.4

App sign upApp doesn’t allow a user to sign up.Version: 0.10.8

The speech recognition is baaaadI have tried multiple things speaking faster/slower, enunciating, I don’t get this app at all. Most of the time it doesn’t pick up anything I say. If it does happen to work, any natural pause makes the mike cut out. Also, cannot get this app to work with headphones (?) as soon at you tap to speak it cuts back to speakerphone (?). I like the concept, when I can get it to work- but it simply doesn’t recognize that I am talking, doesn’t catch any words, or just doesn’t register the microphone most of the time. This means I’m just repeating myself 10 times to get it to register and getting more frustrated with ever lesion. Just. Bad..Version: 3.4.3

Disappointed. How do I get a refund ?The bot seems to want to end the conversation after only a handful of contributions each way. I had to work so hard to keep a conversation going that it distracted me from the actual task. Also I got some complete gibberish. The speech recognition needs work. Inferior to what I have experienced in another app (DuoL). I had to manually edit most of my responses. That kills the spontaneous nature of the conversations this app claims are the key to learning. There’s no help or feedback mechanism in the app. So no way to raise this issue except with a review. After 6 or 7 lessons, I’ve had enough. £59.99? I would like a refund..Version: 3.7.3

Broken promise, uninstall. The ad said try it for free… Then it wanted me to enable notifications, microphone access, create account, read testimonials….. Then it wanted me to pay a subscription upfront, minimum 3 months..Version: 3.7.4

Can’t get a response from customer serviceTried it out after targeted ads, it was really glitchy and didn’t work for me at all so I cancelled the account and emailed for a refund. I have had one generic reply, but nothing relating to the email I sent them, I have since emailed twice and it’s been nearly a week without a response..Version: 3.7.3

Company closed?I have been charged by this company without my permission. Also the app doesn’t work, it’s stuck on the intro screen. No emails responded to and not active on social media. I am going to have to raise a dispute with my bank. Avoid..Version: 0.17.1

FrustratingI’m finding this app very frustrating to use. When you speak, it takes several seconds to register. Often, I have to repeat myself over and over. The conversations are stilted and the required responses are very inflexible. It also often tells me my response is correct when it is not..Version: 4.0.3

Impressed by their swift refund policyAs promised, I wrote a critical review of this product and their interesting “trail” method. I downloaded the app with the expectation that I would be charged after the trial period ended. Instead I was charged the full price when I started my trial. After not being satisfied after 10 minutes on my initial interaction with the app, I wanted to cancel and expected a painful refund process. To my amazement, the refund process/followup emails was readily addressed less than 12-24 hours. So I give it to them, the company is responsive and provides great customer care. Just not happy that they charge you full payment during your trial period or do not disclose this information candidly in their agreement. Such a weird payment scheme, that is not common/ that does not put faith in a company. But if you wish to cancel and get a refund, surprisingly it was streamlined and efficient. Who knows if they will even post this on their review site..Version: 3.7.4

No free trialUnfortunately this app doesn’t have a free trial. I don’t want to risk subscribing without first trying it first, especially with a few negative reviews..Version: 3.7.3

Buggy and creepyI regret paying for this app. It’s super buggy. The conversations are plain creepy and often weird. Like telling a friend you know about her affair, out of the blue in a otherwise normal conversation. Stupid. Everything about feels like it’s been designed to be hip and cool, from the conversations to the people shown but frankly it misses the mark by a mile and comes off pretty sad. Most importantly it plain doesn’t work well. Give this one a miss..Version: 3.4.5

Good concept, but needs workI'm really hoping that the developers improve the reliability of this app because it could be great and maybe much more effective than Duolingo. The main issues are sometimes long delays in processing speech, complete app crashes when you repeat a sentence (which require you to restart the app and have to repeat the entire lesson), the skip button not working, and consistent problems interpreting simple speech. With the last issue, when I speak "No, ella no habla bien español," for example, it recognizes the first "no" but no matter how I say the second "no," it cannot recognize it (noting here that several native speakers from different countries have said that my pronunciation is excellent--plus, why would Jumpspeak accept the first "no" every time and not the second one?). Plus when the skip button doesn’t work and the app isn’t excepting your response, your only option is to, again, close the app. I could put up with problems like this in a free app, but not one that I'm paying $80 a year to use. How do I request a refund?.Version: 3.5.1

Huge delay in micThere is so much to like about the platform and what they have developed so far, BUT… is it really a conversation app if I have to wait 10 seconds between responses for the mic to load? I also wish there was a way to uncover/cover translations (at least in the immersive part) so that I can see if I understand before just reading it (maybe it changes as you progress and I haven’t gotten far enough?). Currently I have been attempting to cover translations with my thumb when reading the Spanish part meant for me, but it seems like I should t have to since I pay for the app. But more importantly: THE MIC (specifically on the front end of the response, not necessarily they assessment of pronunciation).Version: 2.4.0

Buggy and 30 day moneyback guarantee is a lieDon’t be fooled. It’s a free download with an in app purchase to subscribe. The prompt for the subscription tells you that you can get a full moneyback guarantee if you cancel within 30 days. When you click through that prompt, it takes you to the App Store where you finish the purchase through Apple. the problem is at Apple doesn’t issue refunds for app purchases. So if you don’t like the product, you actually have to go refuted it with Apple. What a mess. Total false advertising. Oh, and the app is buggy. In 45 minutes of using it I got four or five errors about the ChatGPT integration..Version: 4.0.3
