✓ Best Decision EverBest decision ever if you are looking to explore all the beauty and history in Hawaii. We were on one island (Oahu) and took a tour with a company and felt like we only saw things from a bus windshield. When we got to Kauai, we canceled our tours, got this app and had the BEST time of our life at our own pace. We learned a lot, got amazing pictures, saw breathtaking views and made so many memories with the help of this app. It’s a must and hope they come out with more tours across the states. ✓ Totally worth it for the road to Hana, Maui!I sprung for the navigation system with our rental car…big mistake! It was a tablet that used google maps 🤪 So I downloaded Shaka guide and paid for the traditional route and made sure to download the route as I knew I’d lose cell service at points. Worked great and wasn’t distracting! It told us points to skip if we were low on time and everything we might want to know. I would’ve completely missed some awesome turnoffs. Keanae arboretum and keanae peninsula detour were highlights! Added bonus was when they’d tell you where gas was or bathrooms. Then on the drive back hearing the history of Hawaii was pretty cool too. Wish we would’ve known about Shaka guide when we drove up Haleakala crater for sunset!.Version: 8.1.8
✓ Just do it!We downloaded the Shaka Road to Hana loop tour for our Maui vacation and it was worth every penny. We wanted to drive ourselves so we could stop where we wanted, spend whatever time we wanted, and skip the things we didn’t want to see. This guide was amazing and helped us find some really unique spots. The guide is knowledgeable and fun and the GPS worked almost to perfection. You won’t regret the purchase. And if you’re nervous about the full Hana loop, don’t be. Our rental Nissan Rogue did it with no problem and the roads are much improved since my husband and I made the drive 12 years ago. It’s a long trip either way, but seeing some of the back Maui countryside with less traffic made the loop worth it for us. The locals understandably drive faster through there, so be on the lookout and pull off to the side to let them pass..Version: 2.1.5

✓ Worth every pennyThese tours are so incredibly well done. It is even sent A LOT of time went into creating these, and it is greatly appreciated. We did Shaka guide in Maui for the road to Hana which was essential. You get no cell reception, but since Shaka Guide works off GPS we were never lost! We then listened to all 4 Kauai tours during our week there. Because of this app we went to a beach no one else had mentioned for excellent snorkeling, and we ended up swimming around the most amazing reef with multiple turtles. The stories he tells you about Hawaiian history are great, too, they give you such an appreciation for the place you are. ✓ Don’t Think Twice! Get it.The night we arrived in Kona from Georgia, a lady in the hot tub mentioned the Shaka Guide app in a way that I should have known what it was and should have already had it. She gave us a rundown of all of the places she had visited with her family during her ten day stay on the island. I did my research on it when I got settled in our room for the night and I can easily say it was the best decision made during our vacation. We used the app and did all of the available tours for Kona, even combining a couple. We saw and learned so much during our ten day stay and it made for an epic trip. ✓ Great guide!We downloaded this based on a recommendation and it did not disappoint! The places recommended to stop were amazing! We didn’t feel like we missed out on anything. The guide did an excellent job of checking in with you based off time and providing recommendations on things to skip based off the time and what you wanted to do. My husband and I also loved hearing about the history and looked forward to this facts throughout the journey. ✓ What a great guide!!My family took a last minute trip to Kauai and didn’t make any reservations for anywhere so instead we bought the Kauai package and did all the driving tours. Wow! What a vacation saver!! We saw places that we would have totally missed and we could view everything at our leisure which is great when you want to spend a week on aloha time. The GPS navigation worked perfectly and we really enjoyed the educational stories and even the jokes. 😊 Of note, I had trouble downloading my guides to my iPad after purchasing on my phone so I sent a FB message to the guide and they answered within minutes. They worked with me until we got it resolved and couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful! Customer service was top notch! ✓ Escape through Road to HanaWe were in Maui on 8/8/23 when the wildfires engulfed the west side of the island and we had to escape to the east side of the island. We downloaded this tour in Paia by the airport before embarking on the road to Hana. This tour brought us so much joy and comfort (and entertainment!) during the trip to and back from Hana. We could not be more thankful for this tour. We loved the details and general info. And we loved the Hawaiian music between talking bits. It is SO well done. My wife and I remarked after completing the first one—and many more times throughout the week—that the Shaka tours were the best bang-for-the-buck purchase. From just the perspective of finding places to enjoy, the guide was awesome. But the additional value of the historical and cultural narrations made the tours even more enjoyable for us. We were unsure whether our kids (a teen and tween) would enjoy the tours—they did even more than they would admit. I can’t recommend this app more highly. I usually spend tons of time planning and mapping out road trips, but the Shaka app now does it all for me. Seriously, you could plan your entire Hawaii itinerary around this app! Not only does it point out great scenic stops and tourist spots; it suggests hikes and some local food spots along the way, too. ✓ Shaka Guide Me EverywhereShaka Guide tour of Hawaii Big Island is absolute fantastic. It has a wonderful selection sites, activities, restaurants, and stories. The stories of Pele were our favorite - they left me, my husband, and my boys ( 11 and 10) wanting to learn more. The sync with GPS location was flawless. And the selection of Hawaiian music between history and descriptions of points of interest was such lovely driving music. We started off by downloading only one road-trip and ended up purchasing the bundle for all the trips. If we return to Hawaii we will definitely use this guide for the other islands. ✓ The Utah guides are awesome and a great value!We paid more for some of the books we aren’t using during our travels around Utah than we did for this “guided” tour of several of the parks here. It’s amazing. We love the way it works with gps to give us the right recording in the right place. My kids were rapt in attention to the stories and we all appreciated having a guide right there to tell us what we were looking at. So far we have used Arches and Bryce and we look forward to trying out Zion as well. We were really bummed that we didn’t download Capitol Reef before we went through that area. Sad for us. One request: while the music is surprisingly(!!) good, we would still prefer to play a podcast or listen to our choice of music during the in-between times. We did the grand circle island tour, the app gives you plenty of heads up for potential places to stop. Driving along were given plenty of information on the area & attractions. ✓ Shaka la kaWe used Shaka app to visit Hoover Dam and Lake mead. Overall it was well worth it. Great choice of scenic stops and on point narration. The GPS was okay but I wish the navigation layout could have been better like apple or google maps. Perhaps some partnership in future could facilitate this. Choice of music or songs could be better. I'm assually the go with the flow and figure it out as we go, but felt like I should check online... Came accross this app and was open to the idea and purchased one of the road trips. ✓ Loved Shaka for Maui and YellowstoneWe first tried Shaka for the Road to Hana in Maui and it was a huge hit! It made our trip that much more enjoyable and both young and old loved the stories and the stops along the way, but when we went to Yellowstone I was hesitant to use Shaka. Most reviews highlighted how much it enhanced their trip to Hawaii, but I wasn’t sure if it would be as great in Yellowstone. I’m so glad we downloaded the guide! It made our trip to Yellowstone even more enjoyable. We all loved the stories, the interesting facts and the music that kept us entertained throughout the park. One of our favorite stops was a hidden gem, courtesy of Shaka, where no one else knew about it. I cannot recommend the Shaka guide enough! You won’t regret it..Version: 8.2.3
✓ Outstanding companionWe used it for our trip to Maui. The Road to Hana and the drive up Haleakala was so much better for the insight they provided. We also really appreciated the filler music which helped the mood. We ended up with torrential rain during our drive to Hana and the Hawaiian music made it a little better. I do wish they’d add a sunset tour of Haleakala, because our sunrise tour was rained out. Also, you require a reservation for sunrise but not sunset so it might help those who couldn’t get sunrise. ✓ Wonderful guided tourThis app is great! We did a tour of the Big Island. We didn’t go to all of the places because of time and rental car agreements as well as physical ability, but we saw plenty of amazing things. It recommended good spots to eat and shop, took us to cool towns and locations, explained the history of the spots. The navigation was very clear and there are A TON of spots on the tour… I would suggest going early though if you want some more fun. You can also go multiple times and get directions to a specific spot if you need to eat something or if you want to take a break. The Big Island had a lot of hiking spots, but there are still plenty of things that people with wheelchairs can do. You can see Rainbow Falls without a hike and there is a paved ramp. Not all of the spots are accessible though (some of the caves for example). It did show us a lot of cool spots that we wouldn’t have seen if we had just driven on our own. There was so much information and so much fun! And again, the tour doesn’t expire and you can find directions to specific spots, so if you need to stop and go again another day to check out other spots you can! ✓ Shaka Guide Invaluable on our Hawaii TripThis is an interactive GPS tour app by a Hawaiian local who guides you around different parts of each Hawaiian Island (I understand they have more guides in other states now.) Our trip was totally enriched by this app. Not only did he know all the great local spots to stop and sightsee, but also hidden gems and yummy food stops. He also notes restroom stops which is invaluable all in itself. Additionally while you are driving, he tells Hawaiian history and legends. I couldn’t imagine our trip without this app!! ✓ Oahu Six tour guideWe purchased this six tour guide before coming to Oahu and can honestly say that we found them all very helpful and saw pretty much every corner of Oahu with these self guided tours. We love using these self guided tours and have used others before. A couple of the stops we should have had reservations for the tours. That was my fault for not doing the pre-arrival research. Technology was fairly simple. I did have to call for help the first tour we made. My phone needed to be cleared of open apps and shut down restarted with new network settings. (east to west coast traveling). Really enjoyed all of the history and great stories in between the stops. Drove the whole Big Island with Shaka. Never had a problem. Thank you Shaka for making my travels easier. ✓ A gem!I bought this on our second day in Kauai, and my only regret is that I didn’t buy it on our first day! Shake Guide made our experience in Hawaii a rich one with so many beautiful, interesting, unique, and iconic sights and excursions. We learned a great deal about the modern and historical Hawaii, visited little known spots and hot tourist areas, and ate delicious meals and snacks thanks to Shaka Guide’s suggestions. All three of our children (ages 15, 11, and 9) enjoyed the guide and asked us to turn it on every time we were in the vehicle, even if we weren’t following the tour route. The music between points and stories was an unexpected bonus. The narrator’s Hawaiian humor was entertaining but didn’t steal the show from Kauai itself. ✓ Don’t want to vacation any other wayThis was by far the best money spent on our Hawaii vacation. We got the Big Island tour and could not imagine missing out on all the stories, humor, music, recommendations, directions, and history provided during our daily travels. Driving directions were precise. The guide is bossy and yet super chill. He will tell you which stops are just okay and which ones are a must see and why. Some turns we wouldn’t have known to make and thanks to him we ended up finding some cool spots. We felt like we were traveling with a local. I was kind of overwhelmed but we knew we were going to do the road to Hana drive and one of our friend’s recommended this app. It really allowed us to relax during the drive, see the sights, and pay attention to the road/other drivers. ✓ Worth it!I bought the National Volcanoes Park tour for the big island of Hawaii. I was a little reluctant when I saw the price for this tour, but my friend swore that I’d be grateful if I bought it. She was right! As we drove along, the guide gave directions and suggestions for stops but also let us know if it was highly recommended to stop or just “ok.” He also shared factoids which gave us something to look for when we explored the area. ✓ A Must-Have for Kaua’i!Absolutely the best money that I spent leading up to my honeymoon in Kaua’i. For $30, I got almost a week’s worth of awesome driving tours to pretty much every major part of the island, and lots of lesser known spots, too! If you really do EVERYTHING that Shaka recommends, these will definitely take you most of the day (more than the 4-6 hours suggested), if not multiple days. Another warning: the hikes are always more challenging than he lets on, at least if you’re not a regular hiker. Doable, and awesome, but what he calls “easy” doesn’t always seem to be. Other than that, I can’t recommend this app enough. I wish they had these tours for more locations around the country!.Version: 1.0.5
✓ Awesome App!!We used this on a recent family trip to Hawaii. Used the Circle Tour for our trip around Oahu. We hate tourist bus trips so this was perfect. We all learned a lot about the island. We could stop where we wanted and stay as long as we wanted! App just picked up us soon as you started driving. It highlighted touristy things and also off the beaten track spots. So much information!!! We are family road trippers and would love to see this App for some Canadian Destinations. ✓ Best part of our trips! Every time!Shaka Guide is the best bud you could ever have! We’ve been to Maui 3 times, Oahu once, and always make sure to do a tour with our Shaka :) We’ve completed - Classic Road to Hana, Sunset Haleakala & Stargazing, West Maui Coastline, Oahu Legendary North Shore Loop & Honolulu’s Backyard Rainforest tours. Alllll of them 10/10 would recommend, must do! It’s like having a buddy in your car who tells you cool history you’d never otherwise know while driving past, and also having a local who gives awesome recommendations! Never had any tech issues either, super smooth system, even my parents have used it! I will say - we had 2 days on Oahu, and picked the Legendary North Shore loop since it was longer, however, it was *mostly* surfing history, surfing people, boards, and surf spots. I think if we had to do over, we should have done the Grand Circle Island Tour. Also - ALWAYS check their recommendations on what to bring, we forgot to check before our Haleakala Stargazing, and forgot warm clothes😂 very cold but thankfully we had beach towels to keep us warm, not too bad! ✓ A totally tubular tour app!!!!My family and I used Shaka Guide for the Road to Hana tour in Maui and it did not disappoint! The local insight, great recommendations, and overall amazing storytelling amplified everything the Road to Hana had to offer. The price is very low for everything that is included with buying the tour such as the networkless gps which helped immensely with navigation especially in a dense forest. I wished that the app had a greater variety in the music that played when driving or “tour in progress” but with the constant stops we took it was alright. I honestly couldn’t imagine doing the Road to Hana without this guide, and in all honesty, I would say spend 20 dollars on this app and go at your own pace than way more with a large group (and stops you may not want) Overall this app is amazing and really impressive for not being owned by a large company. Since there’s no cell service for most the the trip, it was great to have a guide pointing things out along the way that a first timer may miss even with lots of prep and research. Loved how it kept us safe and legal - telling us where and when it was ok to stop for attractions and when we needed to just drive by. Also appreciated the heads up on bathroom stops and which attractions are paid vs. free. Having a local guide who knows the area show us some lesser known stops was worth every penny - these were actually some of our favorite experiences! The Hawaiian history on the drive back was entertaining and we thoroughly enjoyed our trip. The stories are very interesting and the stops are really cool and totally my favorite thing so far on our vacation. The only thing I suggest is start really early!!! Like 5am if your coming from Lahaina. There’s so so so much to do. There’s a cave that is a must. It goes all the way through so don’t skip that one. I went twice because I didn’t know it went all the way through and was a bit nervous so hurried out but went again and it was awesome. Needs flash lights Most food is closed by 5 So if you find a place to eat then stop! The drive back at night isn’t bad so don’t worry about running out of light. It’s kinda fun actually. ✓ Fun and a good value.We loved this app. Took a full day Oahu loop tour. Found it fun and informative. There a few enhancements I’d like to see. #1 is making this work with Apple CarPlay. CarPlay is now on almost every new vehicle and if your visiting Hawaii, I’m sure you’ll be renting a car with Apple CarPlay. That would remove the need for a car mount. Another enhancement would to have options like if you’re going to go in the water or not. We skipped a few stops since we were not going in the water that day but bookmarked the location to return at a later date. ✓ Fantastic Guide!We thoroughly enjoyed Shaka Guide for Maui! I purchased the combination package and we did the Road to Hana, Haleakala Crater and the West Maui mountains. Great directions and entertaining commentary! We had a group of 12 in a van for Hana & Haleakalā and 6 in a van for West Maui- a booked tour would have cost a fortune, so the Shaka Guide was ideal for us :) We learned a lot about Hawaiian culture, history and the land. The historical and geographical teachings were very interesting and informative, and the narration is a lot of fun for folks of all ages. While the tours are live, the app’s GPS tracks your progress incredibly accurately (down to the turn, fork, stop, etc in the road) to queue up and deliver more fun and interesting content. Recommend spending a little time familiarizing yourself with the app and how the tours work (especially as it relates to the map of wherever you are) before hitting the road. The guide let us know what stops were worth stoping at and which stops probably wouldn’t be worth the hassle to get out of the car… which is BIG for that crazy busy road. ✓ Shaka made our trip the best trip to KuaiThe value of $30 for 4 trips along Kuai is an incredible value. The content is interesting, entertaining, and many times just pure comedy. I wish the navigation could be displayed on the car screen so I don’t have to look at my iPhone screen. There is a bug in the program. We will reach a mile stone on the route, a point on the map and the Shaka guide voice will come on, suddenly it will stop and then Shaka guide will start all over the same instructions. Our family loves to get in the car and explore, and the Hawaiian Islands are perfect for that type of travel. Usually it’s me interrogating friends, locals, and concierge workers and then planning the stops. I wind up with chaos and a lap of maps and brochures. Instead we used the app for 2 full days, and partly on a third. The App had options for scenic views, interesting history, shopping, dining, beaches, parks, and hikes. There was something to satisfy many preferences. I felt like we saw and learned so much more than what I could do myself. I would have missed all the hidden gems. We enjoyed the entertaining stories and mood music during the in between drives. I wish we had learned about Shaka just a few days sooner when we were on the Big Island. ✓ Great Tour Guide!We took the North Kauai tour yesterday and the Waimea Canyon tour today. We really enjoyed them. There were so many interesting stops that we probably would have missed, and the history, stories, and music along the way made it a lot of fun. It was so nice to have the tour guide tell us where to turn, etc, and not have to worry about navigating on our own. Sometimes you won’t hear anything for a while, but it’ll come on again once you get closer to your next stop. The one thing that we thought could be improved was the navigation to the starting point. Even if you only use one your, it is worth the money, considering some people pay hundreds of dollars per person to go on the same volcano tour with a guide. My only complaint is with the app itself. When looking at individual stops within a tour, when your not doing the full tour, you find some glitches. I was looking for a beach. ✓ Shaka Guide tours for Oahu, Big Island and MauiMy family and I took a bucket list trip to Hawaii and had an absolute blast with Shaka Guide. We discovered this App after taking a circle Island Bus tour on Oahu. After spending so much money on a tour where we stayed too long at some places and not enough at others (for our tastes anyway), we searched self guided tours. (Obviously this would only apply if you have access to a vehicle). Shaka guide was highly rated so we thought we’d give a tour a try. We loved it so much that we messaged Shaka Guide and asked if we could exchange our single tour and pay the difference for a bundle for all four islands. This was done for us no problem. Customer service was amazing. These fine folks kept us busy, entertained and educated on Oahu, Big Island and Maui for a month! While in Hawaii, 2 strangers thankfully told me about the Shaka app, so I looked into it and figured I’d give it a try. We love learning about the history of the land we were visiting and seeing stops we wouldn’t have otherwise known about. ✓ Great addition to our trip!This app was incredible and was perfectly timed as we drove around the Island. We enjoyed several stops we would never have known to explore. The app will need some updates for volcano national park because of a few changes with 2018 lava flows but otherwise it was very informative! We used it with GPS when we were following the routes and off GPS when we went our own way both worked great.
