10 Minute Japanese for Negative User Reviews

FREE TRIAL IS FAKEIt offered me a free trial so I pressed the button which said ‘try free and subscribe’ and it tried to charge me £70+. Luckily I didn’t even have that much in my account at the time so my bank rejected the charge but I was given no free trial. They tried to take my money immediately. If o had the money in my bank, it would have been taken from me. Don’t trust this app. There’s no free trial..Version: 1.0.12

Not free trial friendly.Being forced to subscribe from the start is terrible..Version: 1.0.9

Good for vocab refreshIt’s basically just glorified flash cards right now. The pronunciation feature is kind of nice but without context added for words some of them are useless anyway..Version: 1.0.15

It’s okayThe app is okay. It would be better if they let you could practice the words of your choice. If you say a word wrong a few times it will just move on. I would want to practice those words the most..Version: 1.0.15

Nothing like the adsJust a glorified spaced repetition flash card app. The ads show you learning vocab by following along with subtitles, but it’s blatant false advertising. Like those ads you see for mobile games. Worse yet is you have to sign up for a trial before seeing what it really is. And it’s not even as fleshed out as some alternatives. There are a couple desktop browser extensions with the advertised feature, but not quite as smooth looking as the ads for this showed. And nothing really mobile based. Really disappointed..Version: 1.0.14

Deceptive ad - don’t install this appThis is just a SRS flash card app. There are no videos as shown in the advertisement. Edit after developer response: Although it’s a useful practice to advertise with a “trap door” using features not available, it’s better practice to direct customers to a landing page that says “feature not available yet.” It’s a dark pattern to bait and switch customers into providing personal information (which is useful to the product for marketing and future development ideas) and a sign-up process with a default of the one-year subscription before you can even see the product. It’s true you can “download the product for free” but that just puts the app on you phone. You still have to sign up for a subscription before you can see any of the content. This app is just bad news in general. Avoid at all costs..Version: 1.0.15

No refunds on subscriptions! Beware of the free trialBe careful if you sign up for the free trial to make sure you cancel before it subscribes you. It’s $90 for a whole year, and the customer support emails don’t get responses, so you won’t get a refund. 😬 dont make the same dumb mistake I did. The app itself is… ok. I don’t feel like I’m learning useful things. The lessons are a little random..Version: 1.0.16

Not free like advertised on InstagramSaw this on Instagram advertisement, said it was free, went to download and try it and you have to pay to get access to learning. Upsetting..Version: 1.0

Easy to use app - customisable categoriesMy husband and I are using this app together to learn and practise Japanese. I appreciate you can select the topics that interest you. It’s simple to use, reminders are efficient and for the most part works well. We’ve had only one issue, and unfortunately are unable to reach anyone to fix the bug (4 separate in app contact developer messages across 6 weeks + 1 in-app review). Aside from this one hiccup, the app is very reliable and easy..Version: 1.0.12

Let me out as wellI feel exactly the same as the review above. I think funds are starting to come out of my account and obviously within the fine print somewhere a subscription has been made. I have written to the app companyBut with no response. If this is not resolved soon, I will take legal action and claim this as fraud..Version: 1.0.11

Wants $ upfront- don’t water your timeWould like to get those 5 minutes I lost answering questions only to be confronted with a 2 month minimum paywall.A free trial should truly be free, not predatory in the hopes I forget to cancel and get charged. If I was responsible enough to remember to cancel something, I wouldn’t be using an app to learn Japanese in ‘10 minutes’ ごにょごにょごにょ!.Version: 1.0.5

Download appDo you have to pay for the app, can I use for free ?.Version: 1.0.15

Where’s my refundApple store said it was refunded but you did not issue it..Version: 1.0.15

Badly put togetherThe choice of words seems to be quite random, with some outlandish words coming up that most people wouldn’t need in the early stages of learning a language. What’s more, the words are all presented in kanji, with a Japanese recorded voice which is often difficult to understand even when played back slowly. Presenting the voices in both kanji and romaji would help enormously since obviously no one who is a Japanese beginner (or even intermediate) will be able to read kanji, and memorising kanji is something that should happen at a later stage. An app like this should provide an easy and fun way of learning useful Japanese vocabulary and in my opinion this one fails completely..Version: 1.0.4

Paywall straight awayUnlike other language learning apps this one o my offer a 7 day free trail unlike others were you can use the app for free but certain content of paid for but you go through this quiz just to find out you’ll need to pay after a week which isn’t long enough to figure out how good the app works for you!.Version: 1.0.10

IMMEDIATE Charge for free trial + weak vocabYou don’t give the option to try without a free trial & payment information, but i chose “free trial” and immediately I was charged. Like within 30 seconds. As a fluent speaker I was just curious on how the app worked, I didn’t want to pay for it… on top of that, some of your vocabulary includes very obscure forms of common words that won’t be used outside of scholarly/historical context. Not happy with this :(.Version: 1.0.10

Don’t waste your money on thisI am a native Japanese speaker and checked this app for my wife to learn Japanese as it was advertised in my Insta feed. All the words seem to be translated using Google translate. Since Japanese is a highly contextual language, simply auto translating words won’t be too helpful especially when they are inconsistent or plain wrong. I won’t recommend it even if it’s for free..Version: 1.0.3

So bad that it auto charges you for 1 year subscription feeWhen you sign up, you get 1 week trial free then it automatically charges you for a one whole year fee without sending you further alerts! Wrong! Should at least confirm whether user wants to continue..Version: 1.0.15

Huge disconnectI am not able to differentiate the complicated kanji when learning new words so when I have to “spell” the words, I am basically guessing. That’s not how I like to learn. The rest is ok but the choice of words seem incredibly random. I would not recommend this app..Version: 1.0.10

Nice idea, but no furigana option.I like the idea of this app and how the words are organized into many different categories to learn. However, it doesn’t show you the Furigana, making it difficult to review words and practise..Version: 1.0.9

Latest update caused problemsFor some words the spoken word does not match the kanji/kana on the screen. Needs to be fixed immediately!.Version: 1.0.7

This app is not free!It was very appealing at first, but once you answer a few personal questions about your study goals and such, you will be asked to buy a membership in order to study. You will get a free 5 day trial, nonetheless it is not free in the end… Do not recommend..Version: 1.0.15

It’s not freeIt’s not free, it’s one of those apps where you get a free trial - deceptive.Version: 1.0.15

False advertisingThere’s nothing on the App Store that says you need to pay for this.Version: 1.0.15

Major False AdvertisingThe advertisements are a lie. Absolutely false advertisement. They make it look like we will learn in a fun environment through anime scenes or manga. This is nothing of the sort and is more akin to Duolingo. Which isn’t outright bad, but it is not what is advertised. Also the emphasis on memorizing kanji out of context and without any meaning behind the characters is a waste of time. There are over 2000 kanji to learn and they just throw them in there without reason or academic thought process. And yes, they will respond to this review with “thank you for…blah blah blah…it takes money and time to develop blah blah blah…yes it does. But be upfront about your product and don’t sell it based on a lie. Or maybe say “coming in 2024…then whatever feature you are working on, get it done in time. But their repeated lies on instagram ads should be pulled. Now…cut to the aforementioned “thank you for blah blah blah…we are sorry for blah blah blah…it takes time and money to blah blah blah..Version: 1.0.15

Could be betterThere is absolutely no introduction to any of the Japanese writing system. So you have to cheat by unlocking words when you are prompted to write in japanese. Also, the words that you have already learn have no flash card going forward. You have to go to a list and click a sound in order to review. The app is very pricey for what it offers..Version: 1.0.15

Keeps crashingI’d give a higher rating if the app didn’t crash every time I get to the end of lesson 1. Will not let me progress passed that. Day 3 and I can only say “cucumber”.Version: 1.0.9

Charges in US dollarsWe are win Australia and you would expect the fees to be in Australian dollars. Check b4 you get hit!.Version: 1.0.16

Could be good for reinforcing knowledge learnt elsewhereTwo issues with the app, first is the bar to begin using this app is quite high. Many of the practice lesson require already knowing Japanese characters and more than just hiragana at that but does not seem to have any tool for teaching them. This means that you need to already have a decent amount of knowledge before being able to use the app. Second issue is the predatory subscription service, there is no free option to use this app unlike what it makes you believe before opening. Upon launching for the first time you can get a 7 day free trial but it requires you to set up monthly or yearly payments following it. Very common but still a horribly predatory system that hopes you forget about the subscription until it’s too late. For me this app sounded like a good idea focusing on learning key words is a great idea that can help general understanding but the bar of entry and predatory payment scheme ruin any potential.Version: 1.0.15

UnsubscribedI downloaded and paid for this app before traveling to Tokyo to familiarize myself with some vocabulary that I didn’t know. I regret paying for the expense when this app is mostly just flash cards, and found that while I enjoyed practicing new words with it, it was not incredibly useful in practice without grammatical context. I tried some phrases out with locals when visiting restaurants but was met with a lot of confusion, which made me believe that perhaps some of the vocab was inaccurate for daily communication. This app cost too much for what I got out of it and I was certainly a victim of Instagram advertising..Version: 1.0.16

How to cancelStarted the free trial. How do I cancel before I am charged? Not very transparent in the app. Other than that, it wasn’t bad..Version: 1.0.15

Average language appNothing special, black text on a white screen. Idk why I thought it would be different or better.Version: 1.0.14

Let me outI hope I’ve not subscribed. It’s not clear when you’ve subscribed and there’s no obvious way to end it. I’m going to delete the app and hope that works..Version: 1.0.10

Another subscription based appThere’s no free version? Even Duo is free. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Will just have to continue Anki and reading Genki and using Chrome extensions for reading/watching shows..Version: 1.0.16

PaywallYou have to be pay to use the app, why don’t they just charge upfront. Don’t appreciate getting tricked.Version: 1.0.5

ClunkyDoesn’t really help your better off using a genki textbook.Version: 1.0.7

Misleading ads to rope you into payingNothing like the Instagram ad, which showed an anime episode with translations, making it look fun. They know that’s a tool everyone wants and they’re pretending they’ve developed it to get you to try a free trial that automatically charges you at the end. This app is basically just flash cards. There was an error on the first one I looked at. Use Memrise for free instead. It’s literally the same. I wouldn’t really be mad if they hadn’t put up that extremely misleading ad. I get that a tool like that is hard to make and takes time, but don’t pretend you’ve created it to trick people into getting your app. Shady..Version: 1.0.14

Pronunciation is all over the placeThis app aims to teach people Japanese, but the pronunciation for words are all over the place. It’s like feeding Japanese romaji into google translate and playing it back with English pronunciation. 間に(Ai da ni) is pronounced as (あいだ えぬ あい). It makes no sense and i do not recommended this app for anyone to use. The subscription fee is high and other language learning app is better (the one that starts with D). The app that starts with D is not great but way better than this one..Version: 1.0.12

Bad appDon’t bother you can find better sources online, through videos, or apps like Duolingo, Beelinguapp, or EWA. They don’t give you everything but they at least let you have some free material without forcing you to get a free trial then pay.Version: 1.0.12

Subscribe before try?Apps that ask for you to subscribe to a cost package before you’ve even tried a single thing get immediately deleted from this phone and given one star reviews..Version: 1.0.6

Makes u pay without seeing how it worksU cant do anything because of a paywall..Version: 1.0.15

Needs workNot a bad idea, the implementation lets the app down. Clean interface, logical control. The choice of words is interesting but seems to be pulled out of dictionary based on algorithm, possibly linked to the mentions, and so I would question the real-world usage. But translation is often off the scale, which, to be fair, is a common problem for similar apps (and 日本語 in general, 通訳 vs 翻訳). My main problem is that voice recognition is less than adequate, as an example if there is ~ before the phrase, it becomes impossible to repeat it. In turn, pronunciation is also marred by issues such as は sounding is ‘wa’ when it should be ‘ha’ and so on. At times the pronunciation has got very little to do with what is written. What annoys me personally is inability to switch off romanji; crashing after you you’ve done half of Train Words section and then again when you do all of it; finally, would want a bit more challenging tasks, such as presence of some wrong kanji during the writing exercise, or similarly sounding words during 聴解. And maybe a bit more AI in stats, showing problem areas..Version: 1.0.10

Pay to Even See AppThe app asked you for a lot of data harvesting information. After that, they ask you for payment method subscription without allowing you to try app. This is shady business practice and should be frowned upon..Version: 1.0.12

Glitches make it un-useable.I was interested in using this but there are multiple glitches that make a lesson impossible to finish which makes you have to reset the lesson. It happened with a few different words, so I contacted support but didn’t get a response..Version: 1.0.12

Entirely too many errors for a paid appToo many errors in pronunciation spelling and pronunciation to be worth the monthly subscription..Version: 1.0.12

The app is “free” but charges to start using itThis app may be good, I have not actually used it. But it isn’t free like it seems on the page. I would probably get it if it was a one-off payment though..Version: 1.0.13

Too advanced for a quick 10minute session. The leveling on this app is completely off. It feels like I’m getting random words from a dictionary. Far too much kanji, not everyone study kanji. The multiple options section on some questions are too obvious. I see some potential for this app to be great, I’m not at the level to take advantage of this as a subscription..Version: 1.0.13

PhishingApp just talks about how great it is then launches into a string of questions to gather data, then asks for money. I don't know if it even does anything else..Version: 1.0.15

No starsTrash they stole money from me and didn’t ask to renew or anything it just charged me twice I need my MONEY BACK!!!! There should be a notification or alert to tell you to renew because I just wanted to try it for free first but I didn’t like it.Version: 1.0.15
