PocketGuitar - Virtual Guitar in Your Pocket for Negative User Reviews

Overrated, could have been great. The good reviews for this app are either fake or deluded. This is an okay toy, but it's poorly implemented. You expect to be able to form chords with and strum away at the iPhone screen, but you can't. You can slide your finger across the strings, which makes a guitar-like drone, but it's nowhere near what a touch screen guitar simulator should be like. I downloaded it a month ago, and I barely bother with it now because it's such a peculiar little app that could have been so much better. Not worth the cash..Version: 0

Stupid guitar appStupid app you cant even play it the strings dont work. Totally not worth it, annoying waste of money. DO NOT BUY THIS APP..Version: 0

Not really playableI play guitar, so naturally I had to download this app. One small problem, the fret board is too narrow! You really have to sqeeze your fingers together to get them on the right notes. This is even after stretching the frets as far as they could go. My fingers are not big either so I can't imagine someone with large finger tips trying to navigate the frets. It is a great app for listening to single chords and coming up with chord ideas, however don't even think about stringing chords together while strumming. I guess it is not the apps fault but only the limitations of the iPhone/touch dimensions..Version: 0

I'll stick to my real guitar! This app is very well done, and the sound is reasonably realistic, but I found I quickly got bored of it. You can't really play chords (not without dropping the iPhone!), but single notes work well (diads I found tricky, especially sliding), but really the app is just a toy, so perhaps I expect too much out of it! At £0.59 ($1?), it's worth getting for a bit of fun.Version: 0

DON'T GET THIS APPPlease do not get this application, if I can save just one person $1.20 then this review will be worth it. Guitarists: Just because this application has strings and frets doesn't mean you should get it. You can't play ANY songs and it battles with chords. PLAY YOUR REAL GUITAR INSTEAD!.Version: 0

What is this?Fix it! Can't strum without crazy feedback! Fix the sensitivity issue. I touch one string and multiple ones are also affected. Can't even play a simple chord. I just wasted my money..Version: 1.3

AaaAwesomeHey this app is awesome as.Version: 0

Not goodUnless you're a midget with micro hands with long skinny fingers it's way to hard to play anything.Version: 0

Great workWhat a great way to show off your iPhone. Brilliantly thought out. Although it is crashing then rebooting after any setting adjustments. For those who can get no sound, maybe like me, you're hitting the iPhone volume reduction button with your thumb when you try to hold it like your Strat neck?? Techinique is everything, Still great fun. Well worth the price..Version: 0

Good, but has problems....Okay, I would give this a 4 star if when i use the classic guitar sound, the second thinnest cord doesnt have a high pitch "tink" sound to it, making it an unpleasant experience to mess with. the second thing that bothers the hell out of me is that this "auto puck" instantly cuts sound off when you let go of whatever you are touching, making this virtually useless to play anything "fast" and next update should include full fret, scrolling like the moocowmusic, fixing the 2nd thinnest cord to not have a TINK in classic guitar mode, and making a option for the auto puck to let the sound "instantly cut off" or "normal".. i hope this makes sense. i could of gave this app a 1 star because i wanted to play auto puck and classic guitar, or if i wanted to scroll my fret, but i am fair i dont just give 1 star for ridiculous reasons like "cost" or "not good enough for cost," lets be more mature than that..Version: 0

Fun but not musicalA laugh but not by any means a substitute for the real thing. You can't change chords with out it losing the plot. Bottom line fun to make some noise with but not musical..Version: 0

:(Sadly, it lags... Can't really swap between chords/notes with it being audible and not having some messy "blargh" sound. Disapponted. 2 stars..Version: 0

Fun but you need tiny fingersMy fat fingers just won't squeeze into the fret size necessitated by cramming 6 strings and 4 frets onto the iPhone size screen. You can adust the fret size and spacing, but to fit my fingers would leave too little on the screen to then be useful. It's fun still but there's no way I could do more than pick out simple tunes on an open tuning. Even then, it's not comfortable to hold the phone and pick note without dropping it etc. Easier to switch to an hawian style putting the phone flat etc. You won't learn the guitar with this so not great for novices, and if your not a novice you'll find it frustrating. But don't think of it as a guitar but a new "guitar like instrument" with different limitations and challenges and just play. :-).Version: 0

Not badCool but no like a real guitar.Version: 1.3

DecentIt's good, but their other one, ishred is way better..Version: 0

Expected moreInstruments do not sound like they should or could, and almost impossible to play by person with average sized hands, I am a guitarist and I know all the positions but could not get my fingers onto them even after making the fret board as wide as it could go, I know that the app is restricted by the size of the iphone screen but then maybe it should have not been made in the first place....sorry developers, its just a gimmick, not a musical instument..Version: 0

Do not buy this appIt is a wast of money.Version: 0

Ok.....A little bit rubbish after a while as I don't have enough notes to play at the same time, like a real guitar. This is why I bought it, because I thought it was meant to be a virtual guitar, not one that has a 'scroll' button so I can only play so many notes at a time. You should make it have an overall view of the guitars neck or at least a half view or I can't practise songs on it like I want to. However the sound is good and the effects on it like the distortion e.t.c are good, they almost sound like a real electric guitar..Version: 0

App not very goodAnnoying to play chords on. I'd press a string down, and not move my finger at all, but the string will act as I've let go. That pretty much makes it impossible to play chords on. Until that is fixed, I can not say this app is usable..Version: 0

FailImpossible to play anything other than single notes, maybe an Em or A maj chord but otherwise forget it. Silly stupid gimmick. As much like a guitar as a whistle is to a clarinet..Version: 0

ErrorsJust like the moocow software, trying to play certain strings together results in an error where it just cuts out the music. disappointed untill next release with the issue fixed untill then - almost impossible to play but still highly entertaining.Version: 0

Would never downloadThought this might be a cool app but it would never download. Checked other apps and all downloaded just fine. Kind of disappointed I wasted a $1..Version: 1.5.2

MehNot bad but I played for six years and was trying to play a song and the chords didn't work but it has amazing sound and heaps off guitars and it's only one buck worth it sort of.Version: 0

This six!!!!!Pretty lame and a total waste.... Looks cool but it is not..Version: 0

Fun but, impossible to play with big fingers !As the title suggests. I have quite wide fingers (I have to bar an A chord on a guitar as I can't fit my fingers in the conventional way) I find pocket guitar impossible to play because of this, which is a shame because it looks like a fun little app. So, if you have Walls pork sausage fingers like me. I wouldn't bother. If not, go for it :).Version: 0

Not badThis app is ok but after a few days of using it I find it isn't as responsive as I would like and it can get a little cramped when you have 7 or more frets on the boards. the sustain could also be a bit longer too, but it works good for playing greensleaves.Version: 0

Decent, fun, but some issuesThis is a visually pretty guitar app with decent sounds and even some playability. I’m amazed it’s still on the App Store and not broken by iOS updates. However: It’s never going to be like a real guitar. You have to play with it from the perspective of knowing and accepting this. The menus are clumsy (tiny targets, and you have to hold & drag, like the behavior of classic Mac OS 7 and earlier menus). Also, as of today (January 6th, 2020), I’m noticing note fluctuation bugs. I have to restart the app to get it to stop doing this. It seems to be some mode that particular samples get stuck in where it flips back and forth between the normal sustained note sample and something else (maybe a different sample or playback rate). I assume this is due to iOS changes because it never did this to me before (though I don’t use the app much at all, I think I would’ve noticed it years ago if it happens this quickly in a session of use). It’s kind of an iOS classic, and it still works, but it could stand to be updated..Version: 1.5.2

... usumption review...Well umm... AWSOME!!!!!!... if u r stupid! I bought this app thinking i would be pretty kool but holly crap i was rong! dont buy wast of money. very dissapointing:(.Version: 0

Cool as hell in theory, but...First off, PocketGuitar is an ingenius idea, but the clunkiness of this app makes it really difficult to play. You can play single notes sparsely, but don't bother trying to actual riffs or chords. You're not going to impress anyone with this thing. Secondly, it seemed to screw up a bunch of my other apps. Earlier today, I was listening to tunes on the iPod function and I thought I would switch over to PocketGuitar to play along. As soon as I played a note, PocketGuitar closed and brought me back to the home screen. I noticed that my icons seemed to be "wobbling" on the screen and my dowloaded app all had little lock symbols next to them. After the lock symbols disappeared, I was unable to use any of my downloaded apps. After several hours of trouble-shooting, I removed PocketGuitar and the other apps started working again. Beware - use this application at your own risk..Version: 0

Fun for approximately 2 minutes, but...This app is entertaining for about 2 minutes and ok to show your buddy (you: hey check this out. --buddy: ha that's cool. --You: *turns off app*). Otherwise very clunky and nothing like playing a real guitar (I've played since I was 10--for around 15 years). Basic chords are difficult, and it's extremely common to misfret even when your fingers are in the right place. The reason I gave this app 3 stars is because it inadvertently serves as a tune by ear guitar tuner. It includes multiple tunings as well you can use to hear the open strings and tune your real guitar. No idea why it's #1 in app store..Version: 0

Too small and gets old fast!I was excited to download this app seeing that it was the top paid app and the reviews, but man was I wrong... The frets are so small that you can't even play cords. When you do manage to cram your fingers to fit the screen, you can't change to another cord without dropping the iPhone. You have the option to make the frets bigger, but then you only get maybe 3 frets on the screen and the strumming part of the app becomes too small to use or disappears. This app is so bad, I don't have any idea on how it became the top app. I play the guitar and this app is nothing even close to be as enjoyable or useful as a real guitar... I would even go to say that a fake guitar from the game Guitar Hero unplugged is more fun to play than this app. Learn from this review and don't waist your money... Go spend it on a double cheeseburger or another app. LOL....Version: 0

BadWas fun for a minute Spend your cash somewhere else.Version: 0

Just too smallThe app is really well made and sounds lovely but it's simply too small to get any sort of enjoyment, even simple chords like a are physically impossible to play, the frets are designed such, that they could accomidate a babys hand just out of the womb, any more and u can forget it. For 59p I thought I wouldn't care how good it was but I do feel slightly ripped off after use..Version: 0

This app is terrible - customer service is even worse! This app is terrible! I was excited to try it. It had no sound. I went to the developer's site. Read his info on what to do. Did it. Still no sound. Then I emailed them. This was their reply: "I'm sorry, it's hard to find out what's wrong with PocketGuitar on your iPhone. Can you check if it still doesn't make sound if you plug in the headphone? If it still has no sound, one thing I can suggest you for now is to restore your iPhone from the original firmware again. Shinya" Restore my phone and firmware - NO I CANNOT - I would lose everything - and be starting over all because they failed to make their app work. What a joke of customer service. They sure had no problem taking my .99. You have been warned!.Version: 0

Good Toy, Bad Guitar Sim, But Can Be Much Improved EasilyThe rating of this app depends on what you expect from it. If you expect a toy, it is inexpensive and fun. It lets you play all the strings and the sounds and effects are great. For 99 cents, it is a bargain. However, if you expect a guitar simulation app, you will be frustrated. It is totally impossible to play chords, unless you have fingers like twigs. This is also not to be compared with apps like GuitarToolKit, which are tuners and chords libraries. A totally different thing. The developers could very well go ahead and develop a premium edition with sliding frets, a chord library, a selection of solos and scales to be practiced (maybe with leading lights pointing to the notes) and a way to really play chords, maybe with small programmed buttons at the bottom. Most songs have from 3 to 7 chords anyway, which could be available as buttons on screen. You touch them, they play. I would pay much more for an app like that, and it seems to me that 90% of the programming work has already been done..Version: 0

Great app for beginners... frustrating for serious playersThis app has the cool "check out what my phone can do" appeal to it, although any serious guitar player will get frustrated with this app in a matter of minutes. A consecutive run of chords is next to impossible as you'll find yourself having to carefully concentrate placing your fingers on each string for every chord you play. And that's just with open chords... bar chords are even more frustrating. This app would be great for beginners learning scales and chord fingerings. If you're a serious guitar player looking for an app that truly simulates guitar playing, then I would stay away from this one..Version: 0

PocketGuitar had potentialThe app could have gone far, the fact a user can move up and down the neck is terrific. I would rather see an app like this that anchors at nut where the head stock is and has frets sized respectively. Obviously you have to reduce size, but for heaven sake distances have to be proportional from fret to fret. Now that I would buy, I bought this piece of 2nd rate dev crap and I am actually amazed it still loads on current ios. Doubt that would still apply if implementation were par for the cours(e) and PocketGuitar had been a playable iGuitarAPP. Peace, Halmummy.Version: 1.5.2

FrusteratingThe sound randomly stops working for a period of like 10 seconds then I can play for like five seconds then it goes away again!.Version: 0

At best, id say its poor..I HAD to write this review, because its pretty crap. like others have said, way too sensitive, sounds arent terrible, annoying as you can only play like, 4 notes in a song before having to stop and scroll.. and the accelerometer pitch change sounds awful! and to the people who say oh shut up you dont know what youre on about, im a real guitarist, 3 or 4 years i think, but more than 2 anyway, and this is only suited to beginners, more advanced guitarists will find it difficult to use, especially if you have big fingers :).Version: 0

Hardly worksThe bass is the only instrument that will work. I get no sound out of the other guitars. I've tried restarting as well as deleting the app and redownloading it from the app store. No luck. Waste of time.Version: 1.3

Creative, But For Beginners OnlyHaving played guitar for almost 8 years now, I feel this application doesn't get even close to a proper 24' fretboard ;) BUT, it is an iPhone app and it's meant for entertainment value, to have a bit of fun plucking strings around for basic chords and tunes, and is not capable of playing Hendrix solos as some gentleman here suggested in a review :P haha. To the devs: great idea, good app for what it's worth functionally, but you need to a) brainstorm ideas for fighting the 320x480 screen size to come up with a more accessible fretboard, and b) not advertise this app as a pro guitar app with all kinds of concert level capabilities; there will be other guitar players less polite than me who will not 'appreciate' that ;) Rates: 3 out of 5 stars. Good job guys..Version: 0

O.KGood, Good, I think it should have a scroll button for the frets to make it a bit easier. And it is way harder to play then a normal guitar! Mostly for a smoke on water type of thing an easy non fret changing song. Can't play Navana or anything else. And some of the guitars don't sound right sorry. 3/5 Would vote 5 for the changes. :/.Version: 0

Great, but 'loses' string pressesThe only problem is that, as others have already said, I can press strings and the app will 'unpress' them without me doing anything noticible or significant. Em is easy to play consistently, while D is nearly impossible. Am works well, but G is 50/50, etc. Please add some sort of sensitivity adjustment/control to country this. Otherwise, excellent app with great sound quality!.Version: 0

It's a Toy, Not a GuitarI bought this on the strength of the reviews in here and can say honestly say that it is a neat toy, but does not even come close to replicating a guitar. For one thing, it is very difficult to finger chords and I always tend to accidentally nudge the volume control as I stretch my fingers into the proper position. One of the problems with playing chords is that you must keep your fingers directly on the virtual strings at all times. If you release pressure for a nanosecond, the string does not light up any further and you won't here that string. Kind of difficult when there is no tactile sensation like there is with real strings. Also, you are stuck in one position of the neck at a time which is limited to 3 or 4 frets depending on how you have it set up. I guess if you really fast and accurate with scrolling it might be possible to play in more than one position on the neck, but this is certainly beyond my dexterity. Having said all of that, I still enjoy PocketGuitar for what it is: a 99 cent sound generating toy that costs less than a pack of Altoids. Just don't think you're getting a mini-guitar, 'cause you ain't..Version: 0

Don't buy it.I know its only 1 buck but its not a very good app. when you put your fingers on the strings it always touches other strings and it just doesnt work on the iphone..Version: 0

Waste of moneyComplete rubbish, sounds craps and has no playability.Version: 1.5.2

Very disappointingA joke really.Version: 0

No SoundThe sound isn't working on mine. I tried changing the settings and it still didn't work. I have the original iPod touch, not the 2nd generation one. If it won't work with the 1st generation, it should say so before I have to spend money on it..Version: 0

Utter Crap!Good luck trying to play something on this - almost impossible to fret simple chords (as a pro guitarist I shouldn't have that problem...) really silly stuff. Don't waste your time or money....Version: 1.3

Dreadful appCompletely unresponsive. Don't waste your $0.99..Version: 1.3

Dude, you really expect this to work?I bought this app just for kicks, and that is all i barely got. you really cant even scratch out a rough tune. It is very fully featured, though. It has options for instruments such as elec.,acoustic, and acoustic-electric, bass, mute guitar, and ukelele. It has effects such as distortion, chorus and delay. You can use alternate tunings, however it is still off tune. Only buy if you have a few bucks for apps laying around. If you can only get one app, get Bejeweled 2 instead. because a paid app as anything other than a game is a joke. So seriously, save the money-times are tough stimulate the economy elsewhere if you must. <<<MOST OF ALL, BUY A REAL GUITAR, AND TAKE APPS AS NOTHING MORE THAN A TOY>>>.Version: 0

No soundSometimes there's sound. Mostly the guitar won't play :).Version: 1.3

Great little app for the price. But lacks features.I have this and Guitarist, and I have to say, Guitarist just has so many other features that are just too important to recommend PocketGuitar. However, the sound on PocketGuitar is great and the resizable fret board makes it a real pleasure to play. But without recording/playback etc it is just 3 stars. Add those features and you can be sure I will give this one a better rating. I do think it has it's place and if you don't care about all the other features and just want a strait playable sim guitar then this is the one you will want to get..Version: 0

It's OK, has potential to be much more interestingOne of the very first guitar simulations I bought for iOS, which is still after all this time is only designed to run on the iPhone (app does not take advantage of the iPad size difference). There are several other teriffic apps which could be called guitar simulations, for example "Steel Guitar" by Yonac, and "Pearl Guitar" (which has fallen into disrepair and is no longer updated by the developer). These were designed to take advantage of the larger format available on the iPad and both have many more options. Please update this app and make funding the development part of an in-app purchase! Please!.Version: 1.5.2

Cannot play even simple chords let alone songs!!!!Dont waste ur money!!!.Version: 1.3

Not So GoodAs an experienced guitarist this thing just doesn't do it for me. I love the concept and the behind the scenes effects and features are very well done but it's WAY too fiddly to grip the phone and play...even open chords are tough. A new / non-guitarist won't get anything out of this! Would love to see a video of someone playing a tune...there are some very positive comments on here so it can't be all that bad, eh!?.Version: 0

Hard to playEspecially if you have slightly thick fingers. plus one finger can't press on two 'strings' simultaneously for some reason, making many chords even *harder*.Version: 0

Pretty crappy appPretty crappy. Don't waste your money. Most of the time no sound comes out when you strum the strings. Also when I hid the menu I could not get it back without deleting the app & re-installing. As I said, pretty crappy..Version: 0

BarfGarbage. Not even worth a good fart..Version: 1.3

Not for me!I have no idea why I bought this other than it kept appearing high up in the Top 10 paid apps list, had good reviews and only cost $1.19 AUD. To be honest, I'm not a guitar player, not finding it much fun and hardly touching it. I must be the odd one out!.Version: 0
