British & Irish Butterflies for Negative User Reviews

Poor poor poor crashes after 30 seconds useNot really worth the money although the update sorted out system crashes/app shutdown. Save cash and buy a small fieldguide. Would be much more worthy of higher rating if it included some or all of the macro moths!! Maybe in the next update but then that would be asking toooooo much I'd guess.Version: 0

ID HOPELESSIn future I will take note of other reviews, Identification is very time consuming, if not, impossible. Pretty pictures, £9.99 waisted in my opinion, needs a lot of work. Crashes out without warning, who tested this?. I have the bird app and there is no comparison, you have at least some control, search etc, come on, pull your socks up..............Version: 0

Not worth £9.99For this price I would expect much higher quality images, many more hd photos, even videos, links to on-line information, etc.Version: 1.0.3

Poor.I am very disappointed with this offering. Bought as an aide to identify these insects it is actually pretty poor. If you come across a caterpillar and wish to id you would have to go through every entry. This desperately needs an update to include a method of identifying the butterflies and caterpillars in the field - see the excellent tree ID app for how it can be done well. For £10 pounds don't bother you would do equally well to use the Internet in the field and it would be no slower. Thank god I resisted the temptation to buy the birds app from the same developer..Version: 0

Disappointing for £9.99I bought this for ID purposes in the field. However it's useless for this as the index of butterflies is so small you cannot find what you want unless you spend ages clicking on each one. Please sort this out!.Version: 1.0.3

Good but could be betterA good first attempt at an interactive fieldguide. But why not use some of the iPhone's hardware to supplement what is essentially a paper guide? Imagine a field guide that can use built in gps to feature only those species encountered at the location of the observer. This list could then be futher refined by identifying only those species currently in flight. An interactive key would also be a fantastic addition. Looking forward to other titles in the series and improvements to interation with available technology..Version: 0

Appalling navigationNavigation is a list of butterflies by name with a tiny image (1cm x 1cm max). Also, no search facility other than typing in name. Worth a couple of quid in its current form..Version: 2.0.0

Missing important detailsSadly, it is missing size/wingspan which, at times, would greatly help identification. The pictures give no indication of (comparative) size, with each picture being the same size. Identifying similar looking species is actually quite difficult, with the organisation of this guide. As others have remarked, this is essentially a paper book. The compare feature is useful, but limited. As others have suggested, the option of being able to filter by current location would be very useful. As would being able to filter/rank possibilities by time of year. It is a bit frustrating having scroll through all the pictures to be able to access the distribution info, lifecycle/year info and the description text. The description text is generally very informative, but, as previously mentioned, missing vital details such as size. It would be better if this could be accessed directly at any time by use of a button. On an iPad, at least, there is a large amount of empty space which could be used to show the distribution and lifecycle details. Also, most features appear to be given over to over-plugging of the corresponding Moths app, especially the 'view this species in the Moths app'; which is particularly annoying since it doesn't appear that any butterflies are in the Moths app!.Version: 2.0.1

Not quite HDA nice iPhone/iPod Touch app but despite the + sign the illustrations are very soft when shown on the iPad. If they were upgraded to really make use of the larger screen it would look great. that said they are still quite useable and the information is first rate..Version: 1.0.3

DisappointingUsed to like the older version. I find this version annoying. The pictures are so small, identifying an unknown butterfly nigh on impossible. Thus and the price has put me off from buying the Moth guide..Version: 2.0.0

Not really for iPadThis is an informative app, but for the price it is, IT SHOULD HAVE A SEARCH FUNCTION FOR IDENTIFICATION, otherwise it is not very useful out in the field. Also it is marked with the '+' sign which means it should be suitable for iPad but the pictures are not at all HD when put on the iPad. Not worth the £5.99 really, but with a few tweaks it could be brilliant..Version: 1.0.3

Could be betterYou really need to know your butterflies before using this! Search would help. Identification guide might make it worth £9.99. Nice photos..Version: 1.0.3

Problems with version 2.0The content of this app is very good and I have been happily using version 1 for a good while. The upgrade to 2.0 brings some useful features (e.g. a comparison facility) but also introduces a major problem. While the photos on this version will still resize to fill available screen space (if you minimise the text or change to landscape orientation) the other illustrations don't - they just show at the same small size surrounded by loads of wasted white space. The accompanying i.d. tips text now verges on too small to read on a full-size iPad. In version 1 the illustrations resized properly to use available screen space. This is a backward step for version 2.0 and, given that the illustrations are such a key component of the guide, it really needs fixing to restore the usability of the excellent underpinning content..Version: 2.0.0

If it ain't broke why fix it??Disappointed with this update - a-z doesn't work well anymore and detailed flight time graphs aren't there as far as I can see. Also screen obviously not catering for older iPhones. Can we have the old version back please ???.Version: 2.0.0

Great startA good index and lots of detail however not the most useful app for identifying butterflies. The thumb images are too small in the index so impossible to match what you are seeing. Once you have found your butterfly (I have yet managed this), the contents and information on a particular butterfly is very good. If it were possible to flip through the butterflies by colour as full size images for identification, this would make this app so much more useful and pleasurable..Version: 0

Butterflies of Britain and IrelandUseless!!!!! A total waste of money. It keeps on crashing after about 30 seconds viewing. Unless this bug is fixed don't spend your money..Version: 0
