Birds of Brazil for Negative User Reviews

Missing multiple lists of favoritesIt is a shame that an app with such rich and comprehensive content as this one does not feature a “filter by state/location” or at least the possibility to manually create multiple lists of favorite birds. This renders the app almost useless because one has to scroll through 1800+ thumbnails of birds to try to identify one spotted bird. I have written the developers some time ago asking for this simple feature to be implemented but got no answer whatsoever.Version: 2.0.5

UpdateThis app was working fine on my iPad. It started crashing today and I found the update. Turned iPad off, updated and it is still crashing after the credits page shows up. I'm leaving for Brazil today. Can you help me?.Version: 2.0.3

Incompatible with iOS 7!I bought this as I am on a birding trip to the Pantanal in a few days time and the van Perlo reference book is heavy! Unfortunately it freezes under iOS 7 if you attempt a search and can only be resuscitated by a reboot. I contacted the publisher, Natureguides, and they informed me that a remedy is a "low priority". I have regretfully applied for a refund..Version: 1.0.0

Don’t waste your money!Used this app to record my bird sightings in Brazil. Three days into the trip the app disappeared. When I downloaded it again all my sightings were gone. Totally useless app..Version: 2.0.4

Chip Scialfa, PH.D.Having a digital field guide has improved my birding experiences in North America and so I jumped at the chance to get this app. While it certainly has a lot of nice features, I can't recommend it strongly. Why? I'll be brief. Illustrations are of poor quality, for example, do not show wing patterns on some species where it is important. Functional links are too small to see in the field. Compare with Sibley. Fields are too touch-sensitive, opening whole categories of birds unintentionally. Search function locks up the system, running on iPad, but, so far, not on the iPod. No compare species function. Need a "field book" type set of plates that allow fast comparison of large numbers of species for the person new to an area. In short, use a paper field guide, unless you already know the birds. Save this for songs..Version: 1.0.0

Needs a way to download sightingsThis was a great app during a recent trip to brazil. Much easier to deal with than the book, which I also have. but I was sorry to see after getting home that you cannot download your sightings... ie your ‘favorites’. This would be so much better if you could record details of species etc in the field and download it.Version: 2.0.7

Terrible updateAfter this last update the app stop working on landscape mode on the IPhone 6 plus if you mark a lot of birds the app quits. I wish I could go back to the previous version..Version: 2.0.2

The thumbnails are too smallThe tiny thumbnails make it difficult to use this guide as an identification tool..Version: 1.0.0

Great idea ... but terrible illustrationsI have most other Bird Guides apps and applaud their innovative approach bringing field guides to the iPod and iPad, but the illustrations used for the species in this guide are truly awful. The standard of photographs are generally good but these are not available for many species and the sound recordings are of mixed quality. The concept is the right one, but the quality of the original material is poor. Contrast this with BirdGuides app "Butterflies of Britain & Ireland" where the illustrations are superb!.Version: 1.0.0

Crashes at openingJust downloaded V2.0.3 and it crashes at the opening page..Version: 2.0.3

OKNot a bad app, but I wish it had more photos and better drawings. My main criticism though is that the song/call feature doesn't seem to work..Version: 1.0.0

Incompatible with iOS7Includes some photos and audio so could be a useful improvement on the van Perlo book. But it's incompatible with iOS7, you can't use the search facility without re-booting the app. This should be clarified in the blurb!.Version: 1.0.0

DisappointedNo where is it mentioned that you have to have internet connection to use this app. This is not the case with other efield guides. In Brazil, I am frequently out of range so the app is not very useful. Will still have to carry the book so would have passed on the app had I known its limitations..Version: 1.0.0

Kleber de BurgosThe Bird of Brazil (Vs. 1.0. for iPhone iOS 5.1.1.) is a good product and will certainly be of a good help in field, not to mention it's the first and most complete of its kind for iPhone/iPad. The ability to choose from English to Brazilian Portuguese, including names according the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee (CBRO) are amongst its best features. Nonetheless, it does present some downsides: does not offer song (vocalization) files for a huge number of species (mandatory specially for song birds), and some photographs are really bad (even out of focus). A good example is the Yellow-faced Siskin (Carduelis yarellii), perched on an exotic coniferous tree, shown completely out of focus. I found this very annoying throughout the guide. For some photographs were made outside Brazil, you'll find birds out of their environmental contexts. Yet, if you plan to use this guide also as your checklist, bear in mind it does not offer ways to store data on your lifers (like places, etc.), for this purpose you'll find a single star-shaped icon that can only be set on or off..Version: 1.0.0

Nice idea but lacks functionalityAlthough comprehensive in its scope, this guide has several aspects that must be improved in future updates. The "drawings" are awful in most instances and the text descriptions are lacking any of the detail expected in a serious bird guide. The maps are sometimes hard to decipher also. From a functional point of view the search function does not have a back button meaning that one has to exit the app to reset the full list of species. A further annoyance is that the list itself is very hard to manage with high level groupings constantly opening when trying to scroll up or down. This app is a great start but I would consider it very much a beta version or less of something that could truly be a valuable tool in the field..Version: 1.0.0
