Morningstar for Investors for Negative User Reviews

Decent but datedMuch like their website, there hasn’t been any real technical improvement in close to a decade, and key features are missing. For example, you can’t expand a chart, click on a pay date on the chart to see a historic price, or use any of the more advanced features such as screener tools. If you’re on an iPad, you’re far better off using the website, despite its screeners feeling a bit long in the tooth and limited in functionality..Version: 4.12.0

Echo complaints of othersThe new version is a hugely retrograde step. It's interminably slow, the designers have tried to squeeze an iPad screen's worth of information into the limited real estate of an iPhone screen, making it hard to see anything at a glance. Result: I have almost entirely stopped using the app on my iPhone (it was by far - by far - my most heavily used app beforehand) in favor of my iPad where I still have the old iPhone app running. Makes it much less convenient on the go. Otherwise I go to Reuters or Bloomberg for quick price checks. M*, you blew it with this one. Please bring back the old version, even if you have to rebadge it as M*Lite to save face..Version: 4.12.0

Ok but not greatThe app constantly logs me out which is annoying. I also find much of the content challenging to access and the UX not all that great. The MS website is far better. One of my biggest wish list items? I wish I could access the Morningstar star ratings lists…. “Show me the 4-star companies. Show me the 3-star companies.” Etc… the website lets me do that but not the app. Annoying, as a premium member who values those lists as a good starting point for exploration. There is more I don’t like than like, about this app… even though I LOVE Morningstar..Version: 6.2.0

Getting Better.April 2022: I love MorningStar. The iPhone app, not so much. 3 Stars is generous. Supposedly there’s a beta version coming. The beta version apparently can look at your actual portfolio, so that it can be better analyzed. I’m still waiting. From what I’ve seen of Beta, this will be five stars. We will see. 2019 Nov: I was asked if I liked the changes. I hadn’t noticed any. No longer freezes as in 2015. Can’t compare funds and still no portfolio analysis. I don’t need a diagram. Otherwise very useful. Jan 2015 and still freezes often. Delete & reinstall again Dec 2014. Freezes often. it does load faster but the information in the watchlists that I have created is not there. MS said they standardized the information so that it would load quicker. I would rather have the information. Not sure why we can't have both though. Add portfolio analysis. MS iPad has it. I can get it on the website of my iPhone for Vanguard and for MorningStar. I contacted support without any meaningful response..Version: 5.5.0

Not as awful for the price once fixed (updated)Morningstar itself has good information but they’ve made the app impossible to use. Despite being logged into my account, anytime I search a new security, it won’t show me the stuff I’m paying for. It used to force me to thru an arduous process to login and connect to the website via Safari. Now it won’t even let me do that but wants to force me to resubscribe thereby making the app useless on the iPhone. Update: Sent a message to support about these issues. They almost immediately resolved. Apparently the issue was due to a permissions issue related to my account so the knock on the app was not entirely fair. For now, I bump up to 3 stars and will readjust higher if it stays fixed. As the functioning app is much more useful and less annoying.Version: 6.0.1

Used to be betterThis app used to be good, about 2-3 years ago. Now it’s quality and functionality have been degraded to the point of near uselessness. What used to be a functional, seamless and intuitive interface for viewing lots of useful information, performance charts, etc, is now hopelessly broken. Morningstar seems to have no interest in paying competent developers to fix it. What used to take one or two clicks now takes ten or doesn’t work at all. One star because zero stars isn’t an option..Version: 6.2.0

Slow to update with websiteFeatured articles on the app version significantly lag from when they are released on web. It sometimes takes a week for those same articles to appear on the app version. I find myself having to log onto the web version on my phone just so I can read the latest articles that are released..Version: 5.8.0

Security issues and difficulty signing inMorningstar seems to change the app frequently, so chances are that you’ll encounter a new login process every few months. As a result, it’s become annoyingly difficult to log-in sometimes. Despite the recently multiple factor login security, I recently looked at my portfolio and found…that it wasn’t mine! My information was no where to be found, and the finances of someone else showed up. I logged off and back on, and my info appeared. I called the Morningstar tel # that appears on the app to report the security breach. The foreign call center worker didn’t grasp the sense of my report, I had to repeat myself and ask her to report the matter..Version: 5.1.0

Needs a lot of workNot a substitute for the computer version of the website. Data is wildly inaccurate during periods of volatility—most likely due to too many people refreshing the app. You guys need to implement systems that can handle 4 standard deviation traffic loads. As we know, markets don’t follow normal distribution curves, and neither do manic investors. This app will not be a tool used by serious investors or professionals until it can deliver data with fidelity (as in high fidelity)..Version: 5.6.0

No longer workable and getting worse by the day!Update: now they are playing big brother and blocking you if they find your password used somewhere else. If I feel the need to have a security service, I certainly wouldn’t pick them. Like others have said, the new “security” features are not user friendly! The whole idea is to check holding on the fly. If I have to go through this convoluted process each time I’ll go somewhere else. Which is unfortunate as I’ve used it for years. I would also add that the new “security” feature doesn’t really add much security. It just redirects you to a web site which I doubt really makes it more secure..Version: 5.1.0

Room for improvementI have a premium account, and while a new subscriber, I use Morningstar data extensively. The portfolio tracking feature is nice on the iPhone, and I especially like that I can also follow the same portfolio on my iPad (which you can't do with Apple's default Stocks app, because it doesn't exist for the iPad). Sometime the portfolio view acts a little buggy. Sometimes it won't let me scroll up the page, initiating a page refresh (even if it just refreshed) rather than scrolling. After the refresh it starts working okay for a little bit. It's annoying, but it's manageable. However, I really wish the iPhone app had all the financial data (10 yr history, key ratios, etc) that the website does. The iPad app comes closer, but really, I just end up using the website on both devices when I need full access to the financial data..Version: 4.5.0

Eh, not terrible… but also not good. The app is a painfully slimmed down version of the website, the website is exponentially better. The app is great for quick info lookup, but there are far better apps for market research. Morningstar is the gold standard for analyst research, so this is in no way a critique on the info itself, but instead the gap between the utility of the website vs the app. *7/5 Update I am logged out of the app every single time I close it for more than a few mins which is an unbelievably incredible hassle. This has been going on for about 3 weeks..Version: 5.0.0

Limited Information and utilityWorks fine for what it offers, but trying to change profile information is not an option which is not helpful if you need to change an email, phone etc. I spoke to the help line and they kept insisting it’s there. I’ve rebooted the phone, reinstalled the app multiple times but no success. Even followed their written instructions to the letter, but no success. Clearly not user error..Version: 5.7.1

Needs more data and featuresThe Portfolio section is very basic compared to the website, e.g no performance graphs, trailing returns, or personalized performance. Not able to add/delete holdings such as inputting buy/sells. I question the value of this app if it can’t do more than show you very basic stats that you can get on almost any financial website. Will be deleting until these features are added and the app less reliant on the website..Version: 5.0.0

Really messed up transition to the new on line beta version.Only way to tryout the online beta portfolio account import is to go in and delete “manual” entries are imported from legacy version. Not doing that results in duplicate holdings. But wait, doing that deletes holding in legacy portfolio view. This should not be a big deal however, MorningStar failed to update app to pull holdings from imported accounts making the app worthless for reviewing your holdings. A very poor and amateurish IT transition! Basically makes app worthless when transitioning to the new online portfolio model..Version: 5.6.0

Wasn’t able to use the appI am extremely disappointed by the lack of response from Morningstar Support and the app UX. I paid for a subscription online and then downloaded the app on my phone, then proceeded to log in. The app kept saying to renew my membership (which was paid for already - I was able to use the web version just fine and used the same email account online and on the app). It never let me look up any securities or do my research on the app. I would say that your platform is great - with great features - however all the goodies are useless if I cannot access what I paid for… hence the one star rating..Version: 5.7.0

Why no more historic stock price graphs? The last major Morningstar web site update took away major functionality, such that I no longer use it. Similarly this app lacks a basic price history graph where the term can be adjusted (only way to check price history is a very course resolution view in the “price vs fair value” tool, default = logarithmic which is misleading). Please do better Morningstar!.Version: 6.0.0

Morningstar iPhone appI’m not sure why Morningstar put the changes that force you to constantly re-log into the app with the latest update but it’s annoying. It’s a news and tracking app designed to allow you to look up financial instruments and read opinions. It’s not a trading application which I can more readily understand the security reasoning behind. But in an average day you have to log in multiple times and if this continues I will just move my research to a more sophisticated platform. Very disappointed with recent updates..Version: 5.0.0

IPhone App UpdateThe iPhone app no longer works after the update. Worse yet paying for an app MS tech has been unable to fix in approximately 10 days. Help!!! Update Hang in there, while you release a new update and improvise the update. What does this jargon mean on a bottom line basis, your tech group has no idea what they are doing or your tech support have no idea of what you are doing. Neither of which is acceptable, the longer this goes on the worse MS looks. We are now going on 2 months with no fix for the app to work on my iPhone. I have deleted and reinstalled the app over 10 times at your direction without success. The app works on my iMac and iPad. Tech support is nonexistent since the responses are so standard that it just feels like a stall tactic until I just stop bugging MS. The analytical data is great but if you are unable to access it on a mobile device, the value is very limited. Hope to receive a positive response soon..Version: 5.5.0

Locks up on search function past 48 hours. ? No iPad app?Same problem on laptop as on iPhone. Price has nearly doubled over the past 2-3 years or so. Ads have become more intrusive. Oh, yeah, and didn't they go public? Anyone see a pattern? Problem is, there's very little competition. And as for the iPad, Bloomberg and Schwab have killer apps. I'm willing to pay the price, but I don't feel they're keeping up. The ads are particularly annoying. That having been said, the service is quite useful when it's accessible..Version: 5.2.0

Unable to access with Investor MembershipWhy is the premium membership not linked up with the investor membership on the app? On the website we have access to premium content as an investor member but not thru the app. Please make this available for people who are paying the premium price for membership. It has been months since I signed up and still no development on this. I have other complaints with the performance tracker which worked for the previous premium membership and not with the new one. Please get this corrected otherwise the value is not there..Version: 5.7.1

Becomes less and less useful with each updateThe most basic things, like a 1-year chart aren’t available anywhere in the app. And all the basic info used to be on one page. I think they have deliberately made it harder to share screenshots and (on the website) removed the printable/PDF options so paying users can’t share the info, but in the process they have made it impossible for their paying customers to use. Both the app and the website have gotten continually worse over the last 5 years or so. How is it that you have to go to another tab to find the P/E of a stock?! How is that not on the first page you pull up?! Just terrible..Version: 6.0.0

Once again… this dumpster fire of an app is broken. I’ve had it!Now it won’t let me log in. No error… accepts the password, icon spins for a few seconds … then back to login. Somewhat similar to the problem they had last time around… a month or so ago. Seems like they got if fixed …but now broke it again. I’ve lost my patience. If Morningstar can’t get the basics right (logging in is about as basic as it gets), how can anyone trust them with more. Certainly not trusting Morningstar with $$$ if logging in presents their people with difficulties like this..Version: 5.1.0

New update less user friendlyI’m all for more security, especially when dealing with financial information, however requiring username/password virtually every time you open the app is quite annoying. I can see people moving to easier passwords to type in with less characters because typing in a complex long password takes out any convenience of an app. I find myself using this app less often now. TouchID is much preferred if you need to prompt me so frequently..Version: 5.0.0

Great, but just one problem...I’m using this app to watch the stocks I'm investing in, but recently some of them have changed their names or split into multiple companies. So I would try to add the new company and it would show up on my watchlist as “dummy” and not by the actual company name. And the other problem showed up in the edit feature for my watchlist. I tried to remove a company from it that recently changed its name and that company doesn’t show up in the watchlist editor. Yet that same company shows up in my actual watchlist. This app would get a 5 star review from me if these bugs were ironed out so hopefully a future patch can fixes these issues I’ve encountered..Version: 4.8.1

It’s okI like the portfolio option to follow certain securities. That works really well. The Markets section of the app is where I lose some interest - the color options for gainers/losers is too hard to see and I find that rather worthless. The News items I enjoy reading but is not mobile friendly - text is too small to read for most articles. Needs a lot of work there. I like the app better than say Google, Yahoo, or MSN simply because Morningstar is known for being much more objective in their reporting, whereas the others are too swayed by Democratic and left leaning narratives. I like the app but it needs to work..Version: 4.12.0

More secure log on - really? It looks like the Morningstar’s v5.0 upgrade to make “logon more secure” basically requires users to log in with their password every time the want to use the app. Prior to v5.0, I could logon once and keep using the app without a logon prompt as long as I didn’t close it. After v5.0, I need to logon anew after some indeterminate idle time. In my opinion, that will lower security because users will start using simple passwords that they can remember rather that using a strong password with randomly generated characters, numbers, and special characters, which they store in a strong password manager. If Morningstar wants to make logon more secure AND user friendly, they would adopt Face ID as a logon token like all of my other financial apps such as bank accounts and brokerage accounts..Version: 5.0.0

Useless FeatureI recently signed up for the Premier service & was initially disappointed to find that Stock Reports & recommendations for particular stocks are no longer available. Great feature before & the main reason that I signed up. Downloaded the app & wished to “Add To Watchlist” certain stocks. Although the feature is clearly there it would not work. As such I contacted customer service to see what was wrong. I was told this feature (although there) is not available on the app. “The app is only to track investments & you may not be able to edit any data.” What must be done is to sign into the website & add the stocks there. Sounds pretty foolish to me..Version: 4.12.0

Horrible revision broke appA new version of the Morningstar app in July that was supposed to give better security ended up crashing the app. I'm a Morningstar premium subscriber who paid $199 and over 4 months later I - and many others based on the one star reviews - still can't reliably sign into the portfolios to check my stocks on the app on my iPhone (and sometimes on iPad too). Multiple calls and emails to Morningstar support to troubleshoot the problem haven't fixed it. I get lots of polite surprise and sympathy but the app still does not work..Version: 5.4.0

As good as their website is, their app could be a lot betterI’ve been a Premium subscriber for a while now, and I love the website and paid content. The app, however only provides you a portion of the information found on their website. In order to look up valuation metrics, I have to either launch Chrome or look them up in another app. Also the login process to the app is silly now, I don’t understand why the app isn’t capable of directly logging the user in. Also, weird bugs like the Fair Value ratings do not consistently load correctly in Portfolio / List View. Don’t get me wrong. The app is still useful. I love Morningstar’s service and recommend the paid service to anyone who is getting into investing, I just think the app could be significantly better..Version: 5.0.0

Missing lot of featuresIt is missing more than half the features of the desktop edition. Still it is useful to have something in the pocket phone to assess market conditions, and read news articles related to stock I may be interested in. Another annoyance is “forced updates”. I cannot continue to work without “immediately” updating the app. Other apps informs me about availability of update - I can update when convenient. But this app forces me to update “immediately”; this is odd and very annoying !.Version: 5.8.0

Used to be betterThis has been a great app in the past, but currently does not appear to link to portfolios. Paid subscriptions do not appear to be recognized by the app so can’t see paid-for investment content. So most of the great features apparently are now unavailable. All I get is a limited news feed of Morningstar publications, which are great, but I miss interacting with my data and conducting investment research..Version: 6.2.0

Still too little functionality & unnecessary logon processThis app still requires a logon every 24 hours and does NOT use any FaceID or fingerprint technology on smart phones. If you bother to logon, you don’t get the same Notes, Buy/Sell price, and other options you have on the full website. If you are a mobile user, this is NOT the service for you. Morningstar is showing it is not very intelligent so makes me wonder about how smart they about setting those fund star ratings and stock values..Version: 5.5.0

Great service but app has login issuesI decided to finally get Morningstar Investor as I use the web version of this service often. I am a big fan of the quality of content and breadth of information - delivered very professionally, as well. However, frustration started immediately after downloading the app. I am not able to sign in to my Premium account (which works fine on the web version). I consistently receive the notice “An error occurred. Please try again.” even after reinstalling. Very disappointed by this. Great company & service and worthy of 5 stars if this issue is resolved..Version: 6.2.0

Disaster of an UpdateWho’s bright idea was it to add all the “white space” to the display of my portfolios v6.0? Almost half the width of my screen is just the name of the security. That now take up three lines of space when only one is needed. And each column of data now includes extra white space. So now I can basically the security name and one column of data at a time. What a disaster! There’s a famous expression of wisdom, “If it isn’t broken, don’t fixit.” Now you have broken what was working perfectly well. Please put it back. Or give me a setting to go back to the previous “compact” view. Maybe the new version looks better on a 4K monitor but that’s not the point of an iPhone app. All I can figure is that the person that signed off on this new design does not even use the product themselves. If you would like to know what updates would be useful to your users, I will be glad to help you. But until then, please, please pull this release down and republish the old version ASAP!.Version: 6.0.0

IPhone app remains disappointingThe recent “upgrades” to address security and crash issues need fixes regarding incessant need to logon and content. I am invested in many closed end funds and after selecting Quotes and then Full Report, nothing loads when using this iPhone app, whereas Full Report does load data using the iPad app. The previous versions weren’t bug-free, but were superior both in functionality, interface, and content. Very disappointed as a Premium subscriber..Version: 5.1.0

They don’t care about retail investorsThis app never works. Every time you try to sign in you will get an error. For $40 Morningstar investor (funds) allows you to group by asset class or investment type only. There is no filtering once you create your watchlist. You’ll spend days testing other watchlist from your main watchlist to “filter” what you are looking for. For the life of me allow grouping by all other columns. Likewise, allow further filtering once screener is saved. A poor thought out user experience - very frustrating..Version: 6.2.0
