✓ Terrible upgradeI use this all the time but the most recent update has downgraded my paid for version to the free version which is much more limited and now shows ads. Where has the previous version gone and why am I being stung for £9.99 to reinstall the version I had before?.Version: 7.1(32)
✓ MisleadingThis dictionary uses only American English. Ignore the UK flag, you will not be able to look up any English words with specifically British spellings, or any vocabulary specific to the UK. It shows distinctly North American words and spelling and puts them next to a British flag - really confusing for any Spaniard using it to learn BrE. It should have made it clear that this is an American English dictionary as a dictionary that does not recognise words like "colour" is completely useless to me and I would not have paid for it..Version: 6.2.71
✓ Needs refinementThe app is very useful but it has a few annoying features. Since I also use the Larousse English/French dictionary extensively I couldn't help but to compare the two dictionaries, especially since the Larousse app costs $5.99 and the Ascendo app costs $9.99. On the plus side: (1) English and Spanish words are interfiled in the Lookup module. (2) Tap the Audio icon and hear the word pronounced (if you are online). (3) Tap the Microphone icon and Record your voice. On the negative side: (1) Lookup, Phrases, and Conjugate modules are not interfiled. Too many key strokes are required to first translate a verb (Lookup), then conjugate it if it's a verb (Conjugate), then hope that there might be an example of how to use it (Phrases) -- which there generally is not, then Lookup the Spanish word in English to determine the gender if it's a noun. Phrases should be fully integrated with the relevant vocabulary. A Conjugate link should appear on each specific verb Lookup page near the verb itself rather than having to close the keyboard and tap the Conjugate icon in the bottom bar. Interfiling would have improved usability. The app is organized as if it were a print document. In the online world there's no reason to have separate phrasebooks, conjugation books, and dictionaries. (2) The gender of Spanish nouns should be indicated in the Spanish Lookup, not only the English Lookup. (3) The Microphone icon is located too close to both the search box and the Audio icon, which creates frustrating results if you tap the Microphone by mistake. If you tap the Microphone, a Recording message pops up. If you Cancel the message and tap the Audio icon, there is no sound and you can no longer hear pronunciations. It took me a while to figure out that you have to tap Done instead of Cancel. Then an arrow appears beside the Microphone and you must tap the arrow which changes into a square box and then back to an arrow and then the Audio icon works again. It's a mystery what is going on. It's also annoying. (4) Extremely little context is provided regarding usage of any word, making it difficult to choose the correct translation. For example, if you search the verb "to be" there's no explanation differentiating between "ser" and "estar." (5) Tap the Microphone and Record your voice. This feature is a negative for me, although others may perceive it as an advantage. It seems that the dictionary is intended to have a second purpose as a language training course. However, the dictionary's functionality should be improved before its uses are expanded..Version: 5.1.5
✓ Very unintelligent functions for an app of this expenseI purchased this app because an article I read says that it can be used for offline translation. Well it is "offline" in the sense of a traditional paper dictionary, but has no translation function i.e., you can't type in what you want to say and have any offline support. As far as a dictionary the entries are not very well documented (say to explain nuances of usage, for example with pronoun particles), the conversational phrase shallow in volume, the app features remarkably underdeveloped, and the quiz is extremely unintelligent compared to apps that actually help expose you to contextually useful vocabulary, quizzed and re-quizzed on a rate so that you can better remember. ✓ Needs a bit moreI like this and have recently used it on a long trip to South America. I especially like that it can be used without an Internet connection. However, there are 3 things that I really wished for but didn't find in the current version: 1) Easy cross referencing between the lookup dictionary and verb conjugations. Both features are nice, but they don't communicate. If I look up the meaning of a verb, I need to look it up another time in the verb section to learn conjugations. Why not have a quick link? Same problem the other direction: if you look up conjugations, it is difficult to get to definition. 2) Search function in verb conjugations. As it stands, it is tough to find irregular verbs if you don't already know the infinitive. If we could search for any conjugation, it would be much more useful. 3) The phrase sections were nice but way too limited. Please keep adding new ones regularly!.Version: 4.3.1
✓ GOOD, BUT!!I like the simplicity, scope and functionality of the app, but can't get the pronunciation feature to work (yes, I've tried rebooting my iPhone and iPad)..Version: 6.2.71
✓ Spanish dictionary reviewThis app is apalling! I can not access the conjugated verb part of this app. I complained at least 3 times, first of all January of this year, and nothing has been done about it..Version: 4.3.1

✓ Paid $14.99 for ads?We love this app, but the latest update has started displaying ads. We specifically bought the paid version to avoid ads. Have now uninstalled all our Ascendo apps..Version: 7.1(32)
✓ Only Lookup & Phrases Functions are UsefulTotal waste of money. After playing with the free version for a few minutes (note free version is in the Education category and paid version is in Travel category in the app store) I decided to take a chance and buy the full version even though it's expensive and there were no customer reviews yet. Big mistake! In the free version, you see that the verb conjugator only shows you the present tense. I assumed that I would be able to view all tenses of the verb in the paid app, however the paid app also ONLY HAS PRESENT TENSE, which is of no use to anyone but a beginner. The quiz is a multiple choice translation quiz. The wrong answer choices are so ludicrously wrong as to make the whole thing much much too easy and worthless. So that leaves you with the dictionary/translator lookup which seems to work fine, and the phrases which also seem okay, but you can get both for free or much cheaper elsewhere. Save your money..Version: 0
✓ Mmm, it's ok, but for rapid translation it's clunkyThis would be great for those wanting to learn to speak Spanish. However, what I was looking for was a way to communicate in a work situation with someone who had no English. I thought by upgrading to the paid version of this it would be useful in that way. ✓ Lacking Some Key Features for the PriceI've been living in Chile for the past 12 months and have been searching for the perfect dictionary and it still doesn't exists Pros: -Offline Search and Conjugation - Word History - Word definitions include topical context for different verb/noun usage - Adding Notes/Photos to words Cons: - Lacks many Spanish words -No ability to add additional words to the dictionary - No ability to save/star favorite words - No ability to see which words you've written notes on or added photos to - Quiz feature doesnt provide a "Quiz Summary" so once you miss a word the answer is forever lost - Dictionary turns down music on iPhone when in use. Difficult to use when traveling or studying as a result - There's no way to change order of phrases or phrase list. - No ability to create custom lists. As a result "My Phrases" list is a huge list of words that don't exist in the dictionary, slang, and phrases. - Phrases are not searchable. Now I have a list of 200+ phrases with no way to sort or search them. What a mess..Version: 6.2.71
✓ It's not too badThe best feature is that it conjugates the verbs Very useful. Biggest weakness is that it doesn't identify the gender of nouns. Also vocabulary is somewhat limited. Even very common words like avacado. If there was a half star I'd give it three & a half..Version: 5.1.5

✓ Update and Premium AccessI am writing with both confusion and frustration that after I updated the Spanish Dict + VL app to version 7.1, it now requires me purchase Premium Access for ￡9.9 once again, and I cannot restore my purchase. I purchased the app for ￡9.9 and now this update downgraded my access, shows me adverts and requires me to spend ￡9.9 more in-app again. What is this indecent business about? ✓ Good but not great, considering its priceI like this app for the verb conjugation sections, however it seems they are missing many words that I could find on the free Dictbox app. Also in portrait mode, the Translate button that I find very useful, which links the dictionary section with verb conjugations, gets cut off. Alas, I find this being my back up dictionary even though I paid more money for it..Version: 5.3.12
