✓ Very usefulI use this app a lot. It is my first port of call and is, for an app, surprisingly large in its content. I particularly like the fact that it will give the pronunciation of a word aloud. The verb section where each verb is conjugated in different tenses. This last feature would be even more useful if it provided an English translation of the verb on the conjugation page. ✓ Great little additionI wasn’t sure I needed another French-English dictionary in my life but actually VidaLingua has been so advantageous, it’s definitely a keeper and more than worthy of its place on my i-phone display! Speed is key for me so I’m a big fan of the clear format and the fact that there’s not too much info for the eye to scan. There are usage examples but should I want to delve even deeper into a word, I can just click on the globe which takes me directly to other apps’ insights into that word. I particularly like the quiz feature (slightly addictive) and the verb conjugator. My daughter (15, learning French, sharing the ‘French+’ app with me) is a fan of the phrase book: there’s every scenario from the practical (‘Emergencies’) to the fun (‘Flirting’). The feature we are both most enamoured with is the facility to add photo/voice/note attachments to word entries. Let’s say she is eating a cake and wonders what the French word for ‘crumb’ is. She searches for ‘crumb’, finds it’s ‘une miette’, takes a photo of her cake crumbs and attaches the photo to that entry, thereby creating her own personalised dictionary. Like me, she’s a visual learner who retains information by association, so this resource is really effective for vocab building. I have now subscribed because of these improvements and also to get rid of the annoying ads. One can play each conjugated version to practice pronunciation. The only downfall is you can’t set the list of all conjugated versions to play while, for example, driving. It covers all I need, from an extensive dictionary, to a phrase translator, both ways, and also gives complete formations of verbs. As always it is helpful to know some French already as literal translations can sometimes be misconstrued. But all in all it is my go-to aid when needing something in French. ✓ Problem with text translationThe app was just great, I had been using it for more than a year now, without updating to the latest version. Yesterday it began to break when I press the translator button, so I decided to update it, and I did but the same problem kept existing, so I deleted it and redownloaded it, it worked fine but now it doesn’t translate texts in the translator, even the plural or feminine forms of the nouns, I don’t know why. ✓ Quite good but limitedI thought this dictionary was quite good until I read a French story with some unfamiliar words. Not a single one of them is in this doctionary and they are not obscure or colloquial. My other reservation is with the quiz. It's a great concept but for two things: firstly, a large percentage of the words are almost identical to English, or the same, which kind of defeats the purpose. Secondly, for others you struggle to make a connection, or else have to second-guess which meaning they have in mind for a word, and sometimes there are two possibilities. ✓ Good Free French DictionaryThis is a really good free app for learning French or English with dictionary, travel phrases and verb conjugations. The dictionary covers basic language. I found a few words missing but then I noticed an info icon appears in search bar to let you know if they are available in paid versions. ✓ Pretty GoodI speaking French quite well but still have a million words to learn. I try to read French newspapers when I am in France and this is an excellent dictionary to have in your hand. It is so quick to respond. It is excellent for those common French words that I recognise, sort of knew but just can't bring to mind. The main shortcoming is with popular slang words that do appear often in newspapers and with letter abbreviations. In English we all know about things like TUC, CBI, UKIP, etc but it is hard to find a source of similar French TLAs (three letter abbreviations)..Version: 5.3.12

There are however a few words that I’ve found are not translated; with those words, I find the conjugation forms but I don’t find the meaning of the root word. The Ascendo dictionary tempts you with a shorter, free version, which itself is very useful. I found it so useful, in fact, that I bought the full version. At $10 it's not the cheapest app around, but I feel it is good value compared to, say, the Collins dictionary -undoubtably more comprehensive but probably more than I need for everyday use at $25. ✓ Wonderful appI have been using this app for a long time. I speak and teach French, and I find it very useful. There are so many things I like about it. The dictionary is quite exhaustive pronunciation is great, many verb conjugations, useful phrases and lots more. Following is an update to my old review. The developer not only fixed the problem that I wrote about below, but he has added lots more words. Everything works great now. Just tap any word or phrase and it will pronounce it for you. I highly recommend any app by Ascendo. Old review: This app is just wonderful, but recently it stopped pronouncing words. I contacted the developer, and they responded immediately. Apparently Google changed something without notifying them, and that caused the problem. This is how to fix this issue on an iPhone: Tap the speaker icon at the top right of any dictionary word screen and turn off the switch for "Use better quality online voices when available." Then make sure the volume is turned up and try again. This totally solved the problem..Version: 8.2.24

✓ Excellent App with one provisoAfter searching the many many Apps for a useful translator to assist on my holidays in France, I decided to test drive this one. I found it the best of the bunch. It was accessible on both my iPhone and iPad for use in the Gite and out and about. Brilliant. However, I decided to pay for the Premium version which appeared on my iPad and was very pleased with the extra resources. BUT this did not transfer to my iPhone!!! Does this mean I have to purchase the Premium version for each devise??? This does not seem good practice as other Apps which I have purchased have transferred.
