AirPlayer - video player and network streaming app for Negative User Reviews

Access from internetIt would be great if you can use this to access your NAS server from outside. Not just in your home LAN..Version: 1.2.00

DLNA connection is flaky.Connecting to a DLNA server is flaky. Sometimes it takes more than 10 minutes to start playing a movie..Version: 1.2.00

Poor HD PlaybackNot suitable for playing HD. Choppy video experienced playing 720p x264 .mkv files streamed from minidlna server to an iPhone5s. A mix of plugin and decoding options where tried but made no difference. Unable to delete a media server that was manually added. These videos play fine in VLC but unfortunately it does not support ac3 sound. If you plan on playing HD .mkv files look elsewhere..Version: 1.1.09

Could e a great app.Starts with all selections greyed out. As soon as my pogoplug nas drive is recognised the app crashes. I don't know how apple testers have allowed this application to go through their 'testing procedures' without realising how poor it is. Sort it out apple and get this removed and have all the purchases refunded! ** new update finally allows me to view my files, mp3 files seem ok but NO divx, xvid or any other video files will load. So what's the point. Two stars as at least it's going in the right direction..Version: 0

DisappointingCrashing. Locking up. Not playing anything. Wasted my money on this!.Version: 1.1.04

Waste of my moneyI'm annoyed it had to pay for the full version to be able to see what it could do. I have a thecus NAS with twonky media server and I have ps3 media server. No matter what file or server I use playback is stuttered and jerky. I have tried 8player and this is more limited in file types currently but has no issues and is not jerky. This is even on a wireless N network. Wish I could get a refund....Version: V1.0.08

Streaming issuesHave streaming issues after update playing xvids/ac3 sound starts stuttering after a random amount of time and only seeking seems to fix it. Also bug in menu system that locks off all options if failed to access dlna server forcing an app reset..Version: 1.2.00

HD poor playbackFirst the good, so far it has played every format I have tried so a big plus there. but sadly from 720p upwards I'm getting ever increasing stuttering as the resolution increases making pretty much my whole library unwatchable on a IPad2. My phone plays the same files flawlessly as does my Internet TV, so my only conclusion is the app engine could do with a lot of optimisation. So far have used the media server in my link station Pro & the ps3 media server with similar results, but will continue to test others..Version: 1.1.03

PoorNot enough settings / control. For example the time delay for audio playback (to give buffering over a slow wifi connection) only applies to the current track and then goes back to zero. The sort order of audio files listed is alphabetical instead of by track number. And so on..Version: 1.2.00

Does not work well with Windows 7 Media Center picturesIt errors out on image files with Windows Media Center, does not display any progress info, it errors out on long lists, etc. Maybe it works better with other DLNA servers, or maybe it works better with video, but my main interest is image files, and it doesn't cut it for that. 8player worked much better..Version: 1.1.03

Does not run on my 3GSThus app works great on my ipad2, however I originally purchased it for use with my 3gs iphone around the house. Whenever I run it, it immediately shuts down right back to the iphone main screen. I don't mind paying for apps, but there should be some way to guarentee that the app actually works before spending good money on it....Version: 1.1.02

Skips and doesn't sync AV! UselessReally wanted this app to be as good as the other reviews but I can't get this app to play back my HD videos from my NAS device without serious picture skipping and audio sync is miles out. Other DLNA apps work perfectly, I have a free one that works great but doesn't support TV out which is why I gave this a try. Really hope this is an issue just in the latest update and it'll be fixed soon in an update as I feel like I've just thrown money down the drain..Version: 1.0.05

Video and audio badly out of sync. Grrr! After reading some good reviews of this app, I finally purchased it but was immediately disappointed. The UI controls were slow to respond, the video quality was poor, and it was badly out of sync with the audio. I was streaming videos via DLNA/UPnP from a ReadyNAS NV+ NAS. Other free players I tried didn't have these issues, though their GUI designs and supported formats needed improvements. In hindsight, these issues were minor compared to those with AirPlayer..Version: 1.0.09

I can’t doHi I purchased airplayer but how do I put video can you explain me..Version: 1.2.00

Best so farThis is a pretty flexible app. Good file compatibility, good device compatibility but a few bugs. I can only get the sound to work using Airplay and Apple TV. I've had sound sync problems a few times but resolved it by restarting the playback from the start. Playing HD files on my iPad is not perfect and the image is jerky. Could be my network but I don't think so..Version: 1.0.05

Pretty goodIf you want a media streamer from your NAS server buy this app: it basically does the job Like other reviews this provides a great solution for NAS streaming and it picked up WD mybook world no probs. But there is significant lag with streaming some movie file types - vob particularly. This is work roundable if you convert to another format Buy other reason for 3 star is music player interface: need to be able to build a playlist and browse other music while listening to current song. At te moment this is pretty clunky..Version: 1.0.09

Used to work wellSince the latest patch/update, Airplayer now won't let you fast forward to any part of the file you're playing with the slide bar. The previous versions did. So now the only way to fast forward to keep tapping the >> button which only advances you 10 seconds at a time. I'll be looking for another app as this feature is why I watch media on my mobile devices, so I can get straight to that point in my viewing from where I left off previously..Version: 1.1.04

Key features missingGood file format support but plays files individually instead of the whole list and doesn't always keep playing in background. Disappointing.Version: 1.0.09

Had this for couple of yersFar too difficult for the common man, vlc streamer is better and free, never been able to get this to work well, waste of money.Version: 1.2.00

A few bugs need sortingStreaming from ReadyNAS Duo Pro to iPad. Was really looking forward to this app, as the ReadyNAS Remote app from Netgear is terrible. This picked up my NAS straight away, which was a good sign. When playing songs, it crashes quite frequently, especially those with cover art. The buffering of each song at the start can be very annoying, it should be doing this at the same time. The HD video is not very good quality and very jittery (sometimes freezes). I tried all the different settings, including increasing the cache. The sound is usually well out of sync with the video; and I mean we'll out!! I also have 8player, and I wish I bought that one first. The HD video is superb and faultless, and supports playlists and download facilities. Unfortunately, I could only give AirPlayer a couple of stars, as these issues definitely need addressing urgently..Version: 1.0.05

So-soThis needs a better folder organizing features. My file system was not used and unnecessary videos on the nas were cluttering the "all videos" screen. This also prevented the videos from displaying quickly because it was probably compiling ALL the vids on the nas. Also not showed all my vids. Not sure if it lacked the codec or I had too many vids to display. I probably will go back to goodplayer. Broken yes due to codec copyright but still manageable to use..Version: 1.0.06

DLNA discovery very poorAs the title suggests, the app can't discover either of my DLNA servers: Linux running MediaTomb (which it claims to be able to discover automatically) and WDTV Live that presumably runs minidlna. So 0 stars for that. On the other hand, I have a Seagate Goflex Satellite (not connected to home network - you can't) that runs minidlna that it can find. It is very smooth streaming from that and seems to use a large buffer so the network led on the Satellite is not active as often as another app I've tried for streaming. It also seems to be less prone to stuttering than the other app, but when it chokes, it does so for at least 5 seconds. 3 stars for the compatibility with the Satellite. Please fix the DLNA discovery problems. Manual entry for things such as Mediatomb where the guy who installed it may not have used the parameters in the config file that the app expects are not unsolvable and many desktop apps like XBMC only require pointing to a hostname to diccover the DLNA server. Oh, BTW, even using the provided hint to connect to my Mediatomb server did not work - yes, I did substitute it's correct IP adress..Version: 1.1.01

Doesn't really workI bought this to use with a local DLNA server (Serviio). I know that my device can play the files from Serviio - if I copy/paste the URL into Safari, QuickTime opens and the file plays just fine. But I wanted a DLNA client that could browse and launch QuickTime. AirPlayer browses the server just fine, but it never actually requests the media file. I reported this to the developers three months ago and they never implanted a fix (as a developer I know this would be easy) so I'm giving 1 star. I would give zero if I could..Version: 1.1.09

Does not support multiple folders in a playlistThere seems to be absolutely no apps out there that support this feature, and so I expected that for $8 perhaps this might let me simply play files from more than one folder at a time, but no. No app developer wants to put in the five minutes of work needed to simply allow for cross folder playlists. Don’t waste your money on this unless you want to only play one album at a time, and with pretty bad buffer times to boot..Version: 1.2.00

Plays files but audio out of syncWhen I first started using this a few weeks ago it worked fine. Then all of a sudden it started lagging the audio behind the video from the media stored on my net gear nas. I access this via a stable and solid wireless n link and the streaming works fine to my near by xbox so i can only blame the apps performance unfortunately. If this were fixed I would be able to use the app and therefore give it a much stronger rating. In the current form avoid..Version: 1.0.09

Don’t know what happenUse to be an awesome app! Used it for several years mainly to stream my music. It had worked so flawlessly for years had me thinking it was my equipment messing up and it was actually the app. Obviously they have stop maintaining the app it was great when it worked. Would suggest trying some else..Version: 1.2.00

Used to be good, no longer works at all.Used to be good, no longer works at all..Version: 1.1.09

What happened?I've had this app for ages to use with my tversity server. Worked perfect. For about two years. With this update, for some reason when I select songs. Each one starts at 11 seconds in. So that's no good. Then if I hit the lock button after selecting a song. It skips like crazy. Can you please tell me why you took a perfectly good working app (that I paid for) and turned it into a pile of crap? I'd give less than one star if I could. But don't buy this app. It used to be good. It's not anymore..Version: 1.2.00

NearlyGreat concept and I love how it auto detects available networks on my iPad2. However it's very limiting if you're just connecting to Windows 7 - no amount of tweaking and fiddling with network settings seems to enable you to view custom folders. I.e. I can view the default video, pictures, music etc folders, but if I want to view my HD Movies folder for example, it doesn't detect it, even if i try showing it in one of the detectable libraries. I can only hope it's a different story when I set my FreeNAS up... On the HD thing, it didn't recognise my MKV version of Cast Away. It's 13gb in size so not sure if there's a size limit on what can be streamed, but the description clearly says it supports the MKV file format. I'll keep tweaking but it's not looking good if you just want a Windows 7 based solution. On the plus side, what media I could stream did so extremely quickly on my wireless N network with no judders..Version: 1.1.02

Ok but not worth the money - should have trial before buyI went off the recommendations, that was my first mistake. Usually I trial before I buy but this app does not have a trial version. It's ok, finds the media server, navigates through files quickly but takes a long long time to load a file unpto 1 minute. This is not related to my dlna server as my other clients hook up and play within 10 sec. The other issue is fast forwarding and skipping within a file, it doesn't work! I downloaded 8player lite and it outperformed this app. I'll just have to hope that the developer fixes Airplayer, feel a bit ripped off! If you don't mind a sluggish app and wasting time and $5 on it go for it, but don't expect a great app..Version: 1.1.02

Poor performanceNew version update 1.1.08 is of very bad quality. The prior version worked better, although not perfect, but this new version buffers a lot when using DLNA video streaming (HDHomeRun Prime). Moreover, when buffering, the app will skip to the next file in the DLNA video list--in my case this results in changing channels. Moreover, the new app cannot find the list of DLNA servers in the network effectively. I have to open and close app several times. Prior version would find them almost instantly. Very unhappy with new version. Wish I could get my money back. Note: my network configuration hasn't changed. All I did was update the app last night and now the app performs poorly..Version: 1.1.08

Way too slow to play filesFinds media servers okay but takes ages to start playing files to the point of being unusable (even music files take a fair while). Other apps, including explayer and filebrowser play movies from my nas almost instantly. I'll be filing this one in the 'didn't work' basket and hoping that one day an update will make it functional..Version: 1.1.03

Needs a tweak.Either the CPU, GPU or wifi bandwidth isn't sufficient on the iPad2 to decode and present 1080i material from MPEG-2 and retain sync between audio and video. Video's smooth, but slow, drifts from the audio track. Plenty of bandwidth to handle SD material at 480i from MPEG-2. Very smooth. Can set it to drop frames to keep 1080i in sync with audio, but then it drops frames on the 480i material it can play just fine. De-interlacing is primitive at best. Perhaps a good strategy for dealing with 1080i material would be to tell the ffmpeg plugin to toss out every other line, then scale and display that. Might help, but the user has little control. A decent start, let me serve material to the iPad2 from my MythTV server, now please see if it can be tweaked to show HD at full speed and in sync,.Version: 1.1.02

Used to be nice appGlitches in playback with TWONKY server. Skips and jumbles start of songs. Still never able play an album seamlessly without buffering gaps between songs. I rip FLAC using XLD. No issues with rips in PLEX or LMS. This used to be my go to app. I don't like PLEX, but I may have to switch. Bummer..Version: 1.2.00

Can’t exit slide show!!You cannot get out of a picture slide show! Also the app cannot find half of my video folders on my Netgear DLNA server..Version: 1.2.00

So far so goodInstalled it and it auto found my twonky server. Haven't watched a full movie yet but at least it recognizes my video formats. Wish I'd bought this first instead of plug n play..Version: 0

Needs more FeaturesGreat idea, but need more features, like select subtitles, and audio, in my iPad when select HD movies in MKV, it plays, but the video frozen in every second, makes unwachable, maybe with some buffer the playing could be more nice. or simply tell's that video file could be played. Another great idea, its if takes the data of every movie gained from scrappers of XBMC, like cast, movie Artwork, plot. That would be nice..Version: 0

CrapWould not even give a star.Version: 1.2.00

Ok but phones HomeWorks fine when it has access to the Internet. Block access and it takes minutes to play a file. Can only conclude that it is calling home and uploading some data. Not good for limited resource users or privacy conscious.Version: 1.2.00

Has potential, but buggyStarted out well - instantly found my Synology DS409 with browsable folders for photo, music and video. Music worked fine. Photos initially showed fine but after a few dozen they only rendered only as pixelated versions. The app then got confused about portrait/landscape orientation and got stuck 90 degrees out! Videos (QuickTime) were too slow to view. DivX didn't play. I haven't tried other servers so they may fare better, however my Synology NAS streams happily to all my other devices..Version: 0

Doesn't work with apple AirPort ExtremeThis app looked fantastic and just what I needed so paid and then found out it don't work :( gutted , so done some searching and found file manager and that works a treat , I would like a refund please ! It should state doesn't work with apple AirPort Extreme as it don't have DLNA ! And this app needs that to be enabled for it to work , it's a good looking app but unfortunately did not work for me I did send feedback to the maker of this app but got no reply as of yet , I hope they can fix it as it looks a great app.Version: 1.1.03

Slow frame rateThis app does exactly as it says and was able to play everything on my ReadyNAS dlna sever. The only gripe is that the video framerate is quite low so the video appears jerky. I thought it was just the file types but they play fine locally on the iPad and it's not a network issue either as a much older Xbox can stream the same file over the same WLAN perfectly. Oh well, will keep looking....Version: 1.0.09

Frequent crash after updating - No PlaylistI just updated to the new version and I am experiencing frequent crashes. The previous version was crashing but not as much as the current one. I was expecting a playlist for the Music atleast in this update which is a basic functionality that is being supported by all players. Please do release an update soon and that will really help continuing to use this app..Version: 1.1.00

BlankWorst $5 I've ever spent do not recommend it it barley deserves 1 star.Version: 1.2.00

Works quicklyUsing it to play mp3 . Works well and pretty fast browsing. Music stops when you move back to library from player. No playlist. So you click a song and manually change it, or Loop it or let the one song end. Failed to stream wtv from my wmc could hear messed up audio only. Mp4 blurry rip was slow and jerky. Avi small formatted played, but once I tried to move forward or fastforward it just went into a net io spin. With that said, it has a quick pretty and useable interface and handles small files great. Look forward to the continued dev of this app, it has some really great potential. I have an app to stream me wtv, mp4 no matter the formatting and it looks beautiful on the ipad2. So my review is based vs the other software I use..Version: 1.0.09

Playback is JerkyIt's ok, but playback is quite jerky..Version: 1.2.00

Great for Synology NAS but a bit buggy.I have a Synology Diskstation DS710+ and this is exactly what I wanted to browse and play all media files on my iPhone. It does actually work really well and is similar in use to my PS3 or WDTV. Unfortunately it often hangs for about 30 seconds for each folder hierarchy that I back out of. Once fixed, this app would be perfect!!.Version: 0

False descriptionI am VERY disappointed and angry with the makers of this app. I actually spent money for this application, after reading the reviews, thinking it would be a final solution to my needs; it can stream music! However, upon download of the app, it cannot stream music at all!!! This is false advertising. Rather than post on here I e-mailed the maker, I also googled and searched the web. All I was able to find was the same copied and pasted information off the website, which was about as much help as a chocolate fire door. Very unhappy with this and would appreciate it if the developer gave me my money back!.Version: V1.0.07

A key element of the description is misleading.Where the developer claims that the app can stream from a nas to apple tv 2 is some what not true as you still need an apple device to airplay to a Television. Videos played using the player with ios 5 Ipad 2 are slow, framing and out of sink using a couple of the marcher video formats. And as for the price of the app, its a bit steep for the claims made in some of the description. This app needs updates!!!.Version: 1.1.02

Won't find devicesThe idea is great but it won't find my xbmc or media centre devices, my ps3 is able to. So unfortunately I'm not able to use it.Version: 0

Apple TV not supportedI would have rated this five stars if it had better performance with Apple TV. It will send the audio but the video only plays on my IPad. Other than that it is great, supports PS Media and Windows Media Player and allows me to stream my AVIs to my IPad.Version: 1.1.03
