SynthStation for Positive User Reviews

Money well spentYou can't complain, for how much this app costs it's amazing! I also got the portable controller for it and its a cool toy to play around with. Lots of options for sound synth!.Version: 3.2

Works with iOS 8 iPod 5th genI linked my 5th gen iPod via a cable adapter to the Synthstation 49, and it rocks using this excellent app! App also works with a 1st gen iPad on the Synthstation, very professional and excellent integration of software and hardware. Beautiful app! Bravo Akai!.Version: 3.2

UPDATE IMMEDIATELYI can’t use it anymore. It’s incompatible with the new versions of iOS. The sounds in this are incredible. If you do I’ll get a Grammy..Version: 3.2

The eye of the beholderWhat the other guy said .. only without the crippling 2 star review.Version: 3.2

Works Again! iOS 6 + v. 3.2 - iPhone 4SWhen I upgraded to the v3.1 software on the Akai Synth Station app on Oct 12,2012, it no longer received MIDI information from the Akai Synth Station 25 keyboard. It no longer showed up in Midibridge either! - that was with iOS 5, not iOS 6. SINCE TODAY IT WORKS GREAT!!! First I upgraded my phone to iOS 6. And then today, AKAI released free upgrade v.3.2 - and Magic! it all works! The sounds are great and it is tons of fun..Version: 3.2

Ignore all the negativityThese reviews are negative and hurtful, this is still a great app today, i had no problems using it on my iPad Air 2. However it could us ea big update for the new iOS software. please dont give up on this app.Version: 3.2

Works fineI bought this although was skeptical due to all the bad reviews. However, I have had no problems with it what so ever. It's fun, intuitive, and I definitely see my self using it when I'm on the run. I had bought the keyboard that complements the app and thought maybe that's where I would find problems with the app but still works fine. Fun app, cheap price, works..Version: 3.2

Great app - great new price, only one concernLove this app, I also have the 25 key synthstation controller which really makes this powerful. Synths sound great, love the drums, love everything...EXCEPT - would love it if the arpeggiated synths could retrigger at the selected BPM every time you hit the key. It almost sounds like the arpeggiated synth is connected to an always-running, silent beat, and sometimes when you hit the key (with arpeggiator ON) it doesn't always trigger right away - as if it's in the middle of the beat. I realize that when the sequence is playing you'd probably NOT want this feature, but when the sequence isn't playing and you're in performance mode, I'd love the ability to have the arpeggiator re-trigger whenever a new key has been played..Version: 1.21

It's nice, but...Yeah it's nice my dad bought it for me for Christmas but yeah... I CAN'T SAVE ANYTHING. ANYTHING AT ALL. And it's not like there's a save button right there and I'm having problems with the update. THERE JUST ISN'T A SAVE BUTTON. ANYWHERE. The only way to save it is to download it onto a Mac or PC but once you get out of the project it's hopeless. All the files that you worked hard on are WIPED. I hope they add a save button... Lol wait a minute I found it.Version: 3.2

Almost thereSo close to being awesome. It falls short in one KEY area...when I tried to save a new project or a sequence....it just wouldn't accept my changes. So basically you are unable to save what you've done. Fix that and it's perfect. Other than that, this is super fun. And productive for knocking out ideas..Version: 3.2

This app is to be used with the SynthStation 25This app should be free for those who bought the SynthStation 25, since it already cost 70 dollars. That being said. This app along with the machine is a wonderful portable synthesiser, it takes some fooling around to understand the app, but once you do, everything is programmable! you can edit parameters on individual drum keys, or you can go through a huge selection of synth levels. there are 3 oscillators, you can change levels on each of them. then there's many other parameters for controlling the final sound to the most minute detail. this is a legitimate synthesiser, if you have the synth station 25 to go with it. I can't wait to record with it! You should not use this app as a standalone synthesiser, it lets you change all those levels in real time with the machine, without the machine you need to switch back and forth to the "perform" selection, but it's not meant to be used like that, don't give it a review if you don't have the machine. This is very nice.Version: 3.0

The app is good but...I want the experience of a real music production keyboard, Will there be a new feature where you can play 4 to 6 sounds in one while touching afew keys on the app & the synthstation 25?.Version: 3.2

FFRRIKKEN GOOD!!!Even though it's made by Akai, for $2.59 I expected this to be rubbish - it's not. Has a range of synths & drum pads. Could have done with an 808 & 909, but has a lot of the other classics. With the patch editor and effect units this is phat!!! It's like having FL Studio on my iPhone. I have got a few pieces of Akai hardware, and for the first time I don't feel like I've been ripped off. This is a bargain!.Version: 1.21

Works Great - Awesome Price! The negative reviews had me worried, but for $2 it seemed to be worth the risk. I use an iPad 2 with iOS 5.0.1. I installed and shut-down/restarted my system and it works perfect. I'm not sure why everyone else is having so much trouble with this app? Excellent application for me - THANK YOU!!!.Version: 3.2

Powerful ToolA lot of the reviews on this really don't take into account that the app is made to compliment the controller. As a guitar player, I wanted something to help write songs without being bogged down by trying to learn the ins and outs of a synth. The app AND controller made it easy to delve in as a casual player to get great sounds right away. The app makes total sense when paired with the synthstation 25 controller, and if you read the reviews with anyone who has it, it looks like they would agree. I haven't used it during a live performance yet but as I get better I wouldn't hesitate to try it out with my band The Live Amps..Version: 3.0

Love itLove this app and thanks Dave for the support re crashing after the splash screen.. But how do I save my edited synth sound??.Version: 3.2

Insanely Awesome.I picked up a Akai SynthStation25 from my local store for only a fiver as they weren't pushing any and it was last in stock (insane) and got it up and running as soon as I was home. Works PERFECTLY with the old iPod Touch with iOS 6.1.2 lying around the house and the amount this little thing can do is insane. The only thing is the amount of people that have compatible devices in 2015 is minuscule and it was lucky my brother had a iPod Touch he didn't use anymore, otherwise I would be out of luck. As a Synth head and music technician I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who picks up a hardware kit like I did and has an old iPod touch..Version: 3.2

Not all bad...Don't know why I bought this despite all the negative reviews, but I'm glad I did. The app gives you one polyphonic synth, and two monophonic synths that sound really good as well as a drum machine with a nice selection of samples. And while you can't make any patch edits without leaving the keyboard, its not very hard to program a sequence, have it play in a loop, and make edits that way. Not ideal, but far from impossible as other reviews would have you believe. The sequencer is not too hard to grasp either. Just pick your synth, pick your note, and set its length. Thats it. Maybe its not as easy to program a sequence as other virtual studios in the app store, but again it is far from the impossible task others gave written about. On the down side, there is no audio copy and paste with other apps and you can only export your songs via wifi. Still, Synthstation is a great virtual studio that costs just a fraction of the price of other iOS virtual studios. Even though it may be lacking some features and sports a somewhat complicated workflow, it is still a bargain at its current price. FWIW, I'm running Synthstation on a 4th generation ipod Touch with iOS 5.1.1 without any problems after several days of use..Version: 3.2

So nearly there.I agree with the other 4 star reviews, this is so close to being the best bit of kit out ther for the ipod touch/iphone. There's just one main thing holding me back from a 5 star rating though. I currently have a 32gb ipod touch (latest version) which runs like a dream, apart from with this app, it keeps warning about low memory, and if you don't exit to save your progress then it will crash and not save. Apart from that this is a pretty intuative and massively useful app. Like other reviews though, a preview of the sounds on the synth edit and sounds sections would be great. All in all this will probably end up being my favourite and most used app for music..Version: 0

Program okFinally got program open and I like what I see so dismiss my first post don't know what the glitch was but after shutting down my iPad 2 and turning it back on program is working fine now please keep improving it I will give it 5 stars..Version: 3.2

Works fine nowRunning iOS 6, works just fine for me. Does everything it promises . Drum kits are great.Version: 3.2

Not bad but....It's ok for v1 , but it needs some evolution . Need to be able to change synth sounds from the grid editor. Drum editor needs velocity control. Grid editor view needs to access loop range . Too much going between screens for basic stuff . Overall it's got a great potential and awesome sound , just needs some tweaks to get it a bit more usable. Also needs the audiopaste feature , and being akai I reckon it needs an audio sampler to record our own acoustic loops.Version: 0

Won't even launchI have not been able to use this app in months because the app won't open. I got excited when I saw the massive update for the iPad version but it is literally unusable. It just crashes and closes before it loads. It never, ever works. Ever. Deleted..Version: 3.2

Not badI like playing with things on this app. I wish it was audio bus compatible..Version: 3.2

What I would like to see!I need a update can't hear this app on the iPad speakers just in the head phones. This a great app akai please don't give up on it. I paid for it and I'm feeling cheated I can't use it. Your a big company it's just app that needs a few updates with the new iOS 9.3.1 system I love my SynthStation please don't give up on it I love it. Your company is so big you can do this with your eyes closed every product you make is great I have all your apps. Please allow me to keep using the SynthStation in it's beautiful glory this app is a blessing from God how ever created it don't give up on it..Version: 3.2

Good SynthA lot of features from a respected synth company. But come on Akai, this needs to be made to work with audiobus. Even the lesser known brands are doing that..Version: 3.2

Synth stationI've worked in electronic music making for over 20 years writing many albums and solo sound scape's... I found working with computer a bore very little hands on this may be because I've always worked with hardware etc... Then I was told about the synth station !!! I'd picked up my iPad a few weeks before with the app in mind... It's the best thing I've ever done :-) my iPad is now my portable studio where I can write when ever the feeling takes me... I then take my ideas I to my studio and build on my tracks.... I'm in the process of re working my first Album from 1994 it was a pain to perform live as it was a mass of keyboards and samplers etc BUT now it's all completed in my IPad....... Sad thing with this app is akai have left it to rot no updates very little support why why why develop such a fantastic app only to leave it behind no audio bus support no updates sounds no focus on what has become the heart of my studio..... Come on akai when are you going to take a step back and bring this up to date with the other apps around you.Version: 3.2

Sounds great - but please add audiocopy exportHmmm Some very strange 1-star reviews on here. Perhaps the next "1-starrer" would be so kind as to let me know which synth apps are currently superior at the price point... I've been playing with this over the weekend, and would agree with the majority of the suggestions of the 4-star reviews above. The most important thing is that the synths sound EXCELLENT, and are highly, intuitively, customisable. The interface however is very clunky and dated (which perversely I quite like), but suffers in terms of its look and feel to some other iOS music apps. The main issue, as mentioned above, is in the song edit and sequencer. I would dearly like the option to "record" live keyboard performances to the grid edit, and also to export .wav recordings to other iOS apps without leaving the phone - i.e audiocopy/pasteboard etc. Perhaps even the option to audiopaste in to the drumpads? A few minor updates to the functionality will help this app to really fly. The key thing for me is always the sound, and I will have to respectfully disagree with the "1-starrers" in that it sounds pretty good to my ears. Maybe I should give those National Festival championships back.... Jose.Version: 0

Five stars for the keyboardHere's what I mean. The program is like a started for someone trying to get their feet wet. But the keyboard is great with GarageBand. The transport buttons don't work but the pads work with the drum sounds. And being able the play the piano with the sustain peddle is wonderful. The people at Akia need to think harder about the program. It would make it woth having..Version: 3.2

Finally worksAfter a lot of trouble shooting with akai the app works for me. If any one else has an issue with no sound the fix was to change the rotation lock to mute. Cycle the switch a few times then back to unmute. Change the switch back to rotation lock( if that's what you prefer) cycle the power. Took a few days of emailing with tech support but its up and running..Version: 3.2

Great update but...This was a great app to begin with, but the update has addressed the issue of skipping through menu after menu, which made it a much less fun app than it could have been. The update is great and gives access to everything within the app, therefore making it much easier and more fun to use, however, the keyboard is now really small, and for those times when you don't have an external controller, the keys become quite difficult to play. Could do with an option for a larger keyboard that can be turned/toggled on and off if needed. Still, keep the updates coming, a vast improvement..Version: 3.0

Great appSolid, with lots of knobs, faders and cool stuff to play with. The overhaul last hear made a world of difference. Now...audiobus!!.Version: 3.2

Very coolReally like this app. Simple to get to grips with and will let you get ideas down very quickly. Great kits to get started with and synth-heads can go to town on all the various parameters waiting to be tweaked. I have had this two days and am doing some of my favourite stuff for ages. As a stand alone music app (for professionals) this will be limited but, seriously, look at the price! And I will say two words to you: MIDI EXPORT! Even if you only used this as a pattern generator, you will be extremely happy you got hold of this and...you know those MPC drum swings you've been after? Check!.Version: 2.1

Blame GameI note a number of reviews that whine about IOS 5 incompatibility. Here's my view. Apple updates its OS with no regard to anyone else. That update breaks many apps (same as happens with computers). Everyone blames the individual manufacturer for the break. Everyone complains when apps are not instantly updated to fix Apples latest whimware. I wonder how much genuine development time has been wasted because of the fact that everyone has to fix breaks that all-too-frequent Apple updates have caused. Anyway. Synthstation. Works perfectly for me. Some great sounds and, more importantly, great facilities for programming news ones. Very flexible and enormous fun to play with..Version: 2.1

Potential ...I think comparing this to Beatmaker is something of a false positive. They strike me as very different implementations of composition tools - I like the fact that SynthStation lets me play instruments, rather than working with pre-determined collections of sounds. I think this is a good 1.0 release and I hope that future releases will let us play our parts "live" on the mini-keyboard / pads rather than writing them in on the grid editor. I also think the sounds and editing functions are pretty good..Version: 0

...I don't understand why all the bad review O.o , but anyways this app is pretty good. Simple, lots of kits to play with, with three different oscillators. For $1.99 it's pretty good..Version: 3.2

Cure for crashingJust had a prompt and pleasant email reply from tech. I had the same problem, crashed to desktop from splash page. Simply double click the home button. Everything running in the background should appear at the bottom of the screen. Hold an icon to bring up the 'stop' button (as opposed to the delete button)' and shut down the other processes you have running. This one works the ipad hard, and needs all the juice it can get. When you have stopped all the other stuff, it should open fine, just like for me. Hope this helps. Synth is good, by the way!.Version: 3.2

Amazing appAmazing app and the price is unbelievable too. Works well on iPad 2 16gb IOS 5.1. There is so much to tweak that it does take a bit of learning by fiddling around. You can generate custom sounds and save them to be accessed by a PC on the same network as WAV and MIDI. The drums add so much more depth to complete your music. The new interface on this versions looks so much easier then the older version demos on you tube. In my opinion a line showing the current playing position would be a useful feature. I could not seem to get the new file name to be renamed from new project or new proj. But the music does save and can be recorded and saved and accessed by a PC. Once you work out that the record button adds the keys you press to the grid layout and can be played back, then you have most of it worked out. It works great as a stand alone app, no real need to have the extra keyboards to plug in unless you are a real pro..Version: 3.2

DrizzleGreat app no long If u like making bangers need to sample though which is makin it a four star rating.Version: 3.2

IOS 5 problemsDoesn't seem to work with iOS 5..Version: 2.0

My reviewI like the app it's designed for producers like me .i would like to see another app like this ..more instruments.. More project storage space..say up to a 200 at least.. And more drum kits or at least where those like me can make , and store our own kits..other than that..it's a excellent buy..and keep it a iOS 4 app..that will make it even more excellent..we buy In to many things that don't work..but this does it more me..was just saying what if this could sample too..I would be in heaven...as a producer..I love the 49 for what it allows me to achieve ...Version: 3.2

TURN ON LOCATION SERVICESTurning on location services will fix the crash. Had this problem in the past with some photo apps. iPod 5gen. iOS6..Version: 3.2

Missing the point? This app is supposed to be used with the synthstation 25 keyboard, and then hopefully all the concerns about useabity will be irrelevant. It sounds great, it is very flexible, and I can't wait until my keyboard arrives! Update: the so called performance controls cause sound breakup on something simple like changing arpeggiator tempo! I hope akai sort this, otherwise they have a dead duck with lots of hardware that won't sell.Version: 0

Great music making appLove this app, takes a little to figure out but you get jammin quick. Love the authentic sounding drum kits and the pads and the editable synthesizers. A little tricky to make sense of it all at first but worth it to learn. Can make cool beat ideas in no time. Cool app sometimes crashes but it's been good since I updated it..Version: 3.2

Very nice updateFinally Synthstation looks and feels like an Akai product. At first release of this synth app I was surprised that Akai had left some of their great synth experience behind but with their new update this synth is now very powerful and it all looks amazing. Extremely gorgeous and very well laid out. This now operates more like a synth studio rather than a simple synth app. Well done Akai team and thank you for giving us iOS players a great Akai product. P.s. Akai retro is back in so it would be cool to see an Akai S1000 app. Cheers..Version: 3.0

HssssssThe reviews were so uniformly negative and apparently stupid, that I had to try it! Best 2 bucks I've spent in a while!! I can't imagine what it takes to please someone who thinks they're going to get hundreds -or thousands!- of dollars worth of gear/audioware in an iCreep for less than a sawbuck, but I'm sure glad I don't have to work tech support for these yahoos. Yes, the keyboard seems to be from 1998, and the output does seem a little under amplified, but it's a great "toy", with real nice pro samples, which latter ALONE make my ears giggle..Version: 3.2

Can u guys update the iOS system pleaseI bought this app like six years ago. N I never had a problem with. The app up until I went n purchased me a brand new iPad hitch has all the updated versions installed so I can’t use this app.i love it and would like to be able to use what I paid for if u catch my drift. Please can u guys take a few minutes out of your busy day and update your iOS for this app I mean when the last time u guys updated your iOS for this app was back on the iOS 3.2 system ..Version: 3.2

Great for priceConnected iPhone to computer and installed the software - program now works The program hiccoughs and glitches if you do too much at one time, but using this program off and on since '11 - I've learned to work with it Recommended as a sequencer and not with peripherals. With that in mind it's the best value for what you can get from it - you can sequence entire songs, and quite frankly - it has a very fat analogue sound that sounds cool.Version: 3.2

Don't buy if you don't have the hardwareAs the title says, this app needs to be loaded while your iPad is docked in the synthstation, otherwise it won't open. If you don't have the hardware prolly best you don't risk it. I'll be honest I bought the hardware for other apps but was pleasantly surprised. This is an great app that punches above its weight. That'll do Akai...that'll do..Version: 3.2

Works fine after rebootFor .99 can't beat it. It would not open before I rebooted the IPad. Thank you for review 1. For the reboot hook up..Version: 3.2

Great in an old school kinda way.I was pleasantly pleased with this app after reading some quite frankly nonsense reviews. The synths + fx sound really good for a mobile device and it's a great sketch pad for getting down some neat loops. I had some cool grooves up and running in 2 mins, once you RTM. Sure there are things missing but isn't there with all mobile apps and indeed software instruments ?, there always will be. things id like to see. 1.all serious music production apps should have audiocopy/paste where needed. 2.the sequencer needs velocity especially for the drum sequences. 3.user sample import for pads. 4.some kind of motion automation. (maybe some of things can be done but iv'e not found them yet. all in all very pleased and already sampling some cool sequences into logic..Version: 0

MrAwsome on ipad, very easy to use. Needs a 12 pad or 16 pad otherwise everything you can expect..Version: 0

FantasticAbsolutely fantastic app, virtually every feature you could ask for . The only improvement I would ask for is when used in conjunction with the synthstation 49 there were an option to split keyboard for different patches for real time playing rather than just recording track by track.Version: 3.2

Good synth.Ummmm no. I am not going to shell out for a two octave iPhone synth controller, so you can advertise it as much as you want, it ain't gonna happen. Subtracted one star for that. However, as fiddly as the app is, you get a drum machine and a fairly sophisticated three osc synth with sync, ring mod and an impressive selection of modulation controls. You get a grid sequencer for your drums and three separate synth tracks, and some storage to save your material. The overall results can sound pretty impressive. This is pretty good in the value for money stakes and well worth buying..Version: 2.1

I miss this app!!I wish Akai would update this app and make it work with iOS. It was a great synth, one of the best ever on iOS!!.Version: 3.2
