✓ Great App for Reviewing PhonicsI use this app with my son. It's so much easier than flash cards and he can use it independently when we are in the car. He reads each word out loud and then checks himself by touching the sound symbol. I wish there was a category for the beginning "a" sound like in alone, away, afraid, etc. I know I could add one but the app's voice is so much nicer than mine!.Version: 5.0

I can set up the list of words based on the syllable type or sound we've just learned and my students can self-check if they've read the word correctly. ✓ Unbelievable quality, features, and easyI've used this awesome app for 2 weeks and I can't believe that it is free with no in-app purchases to trick you into buying in order to use the complete set of features. I've used the ready made list for the CVC (short vowels), I've made customized list with "highlights " and category pictures I.e. The Polar Express. And I've let the children that I tutor record their own lists. If you find that you can't record, simply go into settings where you select the app and flip the button for the app to access the mike and do the same if you want to add pics to your categories; flip the button to let the app access your camera roll where you can select the pic you want to use. ✓ Works well. Fun learningDespite negative reviews I have tried this app and found it to be a super addition to my phonic resources. The American accent is smoothed and allows the full sound of vowels to be identified...more so than many regional uk accents would do. The range of phonemes is impressive and the separate treatment of graphemes is vital in supporting awareness for reading and articulation. I have been able to fully customise the recording on some flash cards so parents / teachers can put their own voice over the default accent if they wish to eliminate the us/uk accent issue. ✓ AmazedAt first glance this looked unsuitable, the accent was American, not a lot of use in English schools, but then I found the settings screen and was amazed to see that I could alter all the words to my own voice. This alone makes this app worth the time and effort. You can delete and add your own words, change to game mode and alter almost the whole layout. Not found how the favourites link works yet but I am sure I will soon. If you are prepared to put in the effort to make the changes this app I think will be worth it..Version: 5.0

✓ Microphone not workingThe app is great. My mom is a speech pathologist and she uses this app a lot with her students. However, I am running the latest version of iOS 8 on my iPhone and the microphone won't work with the app even after I flipped the toggle to allow it. ✓ Great selection of wordsAs an SLP, this app has a tremendous selection of words in a convenient format to use during therapy. It is also a great resource for older students in therapy because there are no pictures that would allow them to say this is "baby-ish." A suggestion for improvement word be to separate out the various forms of vocalic /r/ words into their own categories (I.e. /air/ beginning, middle, and end vs all in one folder). The only reason I did not give this app 5 stars is because i need to use the mute button. The voice is way too sing-songy and sometimes the pronunciation is off..Version: 4.4

The list of words is huge and It's easy to create your own category/word list for words You want a child to practice before reading a story. The words included with the app are at a variety of difficulty levels, which is both an advantage and a problem. I would like to be able to arrange the words according to my preference so I could group words by level and/or hide words rather than delete them. A work around is to mark words as favorites, which has its own category at the end of the list and can later be changed as a child progresses. In the game portion, I would like to be able to turn off the encouragement phrases. They are too frequent and get to be annoying. Turning off sound in settings does not turn these off. Overall, this app gives you plenty to work with in clear phonetic categories..Version: 5.0

✓ We are enjoying it!My 5 y.o little girl is struggling in kindergarten because Portuguese is my first language and it is very hard for me to make her believe in my English . I bought a letter factory from Leap Frog to help "us" practice the phonics and it did helped a lot, but my little one is having a hard time putting them together. When I downloaded this app I read all the reviews and decided to give a shot. I'm very surprised on how it is divided in groups of sounds and the first group we worked was the magic e (made), Chloe got the hang of it after the fifth word and she IS reading the words in that group. The only thing I didn't like is that the audio doesn't give the child the chance to try by herself first because it says the word as soon as she clicks on it. I fixed that by putting my phone on mute and she can change that when she is done trying to ready, so it's only to check if she ready correctly. Besides that I really liked the app :).Version: 5.0

It is organized in alphabetical order by phoneme and students can record themselves and then compare their pronunciation to the app speaker. It is being successfully used by our beginning readers, students with learning disabilities and English language learners. The free versions of many of the Alligator Apps have many excellent programs but we plan to get the full versions when our funding becomes available. ABC Genius, etc. are also highly recommended. ✓ OutstandingOk let's get the bad points out of the way, the American accent as provided is dreadful but you can turn that off, this also says its for age 4 and above but some of the cards are ridiculously difficult but if you take the time this can be customised to the level of your child. And the good bits, well my son is seven and dyslexic (as am I) and reading is a huge challenge, we work through whatever sounds his reading recovery teacher is working on and he has great fun recording himself saying these words in silly voices. Once he has gone through the words in that section it automatically switches off (no more twenty mins of work and getting nothing done he just needs to get to the end of the section) I have tailored some words to suit his needs added new ones but have not removed any as he is loving the challenge. Add the set words your child has to learn at school for added fun all I need to do is figure out how to save my new recordings and I will never get him off it..Version: 5.0
