As a concept I can understand why some less imaginative players could struggle at first (duh me just wanna kill....drool). Create life, not destroy it? How very weird? But this is really about ramping up the power metre of a huge machine - revving an engine through a series of challenges, just using biological and not mechanical means while zipping through a dazzling and varied cave network (complete with many hazards and potential snuff points just to mix menace in with the majesty). It kept me engrossed for days until I'd mastered all three endings. Highly recommended..Version: 2.0

The graphical design of the game is striking and the story is well told, even though it's presented as a series of simple dialogue captions with still photos. Your character is part of a scientific mission, so your objectives are presented accordingly with appropriate language. The control system handles pretty well, and the jet pack and in-game physics work smoothly, although selecting and throwing objects in mid-air can be a little tricky. You really feel like you're properly spelunking on Mars; crawling and squeezing through tight passages, dodging falling rocks, and discovering new life. The controls are very good. With just one finger, you really feel like you're in control of your character. ✓ What a great mix of gameplay styles!I needed to take a break from playing, so here I am reviewing. I'm about to go back to it, though! An hour in, Waking Mars seems to have interesting characters that play off of each other well, an intriguing and mysterious story that I want to uncover, a large world that I want to explore, and all of this is wrapped around a good ecology simulation that I want to poke and play with. Grow creatures so that other creatures can eat and reproduce so that you can get the environment up to the point where yet other things can grow … that's quite a sim! Spider was fun, and much deeper than it had to be, but it was heavy on the *game* elements. This is still a game, but the world is much deeper and the story more accessible. Also, POC main characters? Intelligent world building? I can't wait to play more!.Version: 1.0
✓ Cool, thrilling and engaging hard sci-fi, geniusThis is a tremendous game, a truly moving and passionate piece of science fiction for people who like the idea of discovery and exploration. If you're idea of science fiction is Asimov, Bradbury or Bester rather than Halo or Space Marines then this is the game for you. I remember playing The Dig all those years ago, watching The Inner Light on Star Trek: The Next Generation, imagining what a game or TV show could be without the need for a 'monster of the week'. Finally a game delivers on this, in a welcoming beautiful style. The hints of Metroid and even the Dreamcast's 'Lack of Love' make this even more memorable, as does the real sense of earning and earning throughout the adventure. I've been impressed by some games on the iPad, staggering by reading comics on the retina display and it I haven't LOVED something on the iPad until now. Maybe the game won't appeal to everyone but for me, it's perfection. I wait with bated breath and hope in my heart for Tiger Beat's next game. Thank you..Version: 1.3.1

✓ It was like potato chips. I just wanted to keep playing!Disclaimers: I'm not looking for a lot of difficulty, or tight timing, or sequences that test my agility, when I'm playing a game. I find it especially frustrating when a game has some story, or some momentum, but I have to keep replaying a sequence. So, when I started this game, I immediately put it into "Casual" mode, meaning that while I could probably get my character killed if I really did a terrible job, that was not going to be my primary focus. With that said, I really enjoyed what this game delivered. I enjoyed its logic, and figuring out how to deal with the different types of life I encountered. The game had a very pleasant story, and the two human characters were pretty likable as well – all of which really helped, as I kept coming back to this game, playing it for hours and hours. It was like eating potato chips. I always wanted to find out what was behind that next "door," and to solve the next… well, I wouldn't say "puzzle," exactly but… interesting situations to figure out. I would have liked an extra 20 or 30 seconds of…something, at the very end of the game/story. But that's a fairly small complaint for a game that provided me with so many hours of entertainment..Version: 2.1

In the vein of Metroid-esque exploration adventure games, Waking Mars presents a believable and suspense-filled trek through Mars' uncharted landscape that will keep new and hardcore gamers hooked from the very first moment. I can honestly say that the some games in the genre have high potential to grow tiresome within a few short hours. However, Waking Mars' very clever graphics (parallax perfection!), beautiful animation, and eerie score come together to great a truly must-download experiences for anyone. Hardcore gamers will undoubtedly respect the Valve-like attention to detail and seamless integration of story and gameplay. Casual players will quickly grasp the intuitive controls and highly usable, yet unobtrusive interface. The primary character, Liang, says at one spot - "We are lucky to have been chosen for this mission". I think that players of this game will share this sentiment. Beautiful scenery, clever use of backdrops and fades, reasonable music (though I wouldn't buy it myself), a good story told at a good pace, and so much to discover! The instant transport system is a bit of a cop-out, but you will probably have to use it more than once. It's logical, believable, gorgeous, interesting, and more fun than you can poke a stick at. ✓ Best game I've yet to play on iPhone (besides Infinity Blade)I was completely surprised at how great this game was. I review iPhone games for a local paper around here so I just bought this thinking it looked kind of cool, and I wound up so pleasantly surprised. It's a story about the discovery of unknown species under the surface of Mars and a man named Liang as tries to escape back to the base camp. But even more so, its a story of our role as humans as we relate to other species, and about how our choices impact delicate ecosystems. The parameters in which the game are set are even within scientific reason, save for the fictitious state of Mars. I would totally say this game is educational, and probably the first educational game I've actually enjoyed. The controls are executed perfectly so your fingers aren't always in the way, and all in all I played it for about 6 hours until I felt like I was done with it. Don't let the pricetag scare ya. ✓ Extraordinary Adventure Game!This is an amazing adventure game, with excellent graphics and engaging story. I love the fact that you learn about the environment as you move along, mainly through one's own experimentation, building up a "Mars encyclopedia" along the way. And then you get to use this knowledge to master each level, sometimes revisiting older areas to acquire "items" and/or solve puzzles. Truly fascinating, and you can tell there was a lot of thought put in about how all the creatures interact, and how it should be balanced. Unlike other games, controls are absolutely perfect, and movements tend to be very realistic. It's not all easy or repetitive like some reviews mentioned, but rather each area presents its own challenge, and you have to be creative to successfully face some of the situations presented. And there's enough flexibility for you to conquer levels your own way, although the main story line is mostly linear. ✓ A classic for the iPad!You are on Mars, with a mission to explore tunnels below the surface, whilst communicating with your colleagues, a human on the surface and AI with an interface/dialect problem. All of your equipment seems to be lost, broken or malfunctioning, including a mysterious probe which your team sent below the surface... At least life-support for your suit seems fine! A great engrossing Sci-Fi adventure with nice graphics, a plot line, cool characters, mystery and humour. Plenty of references to Sci-Fi classic books and films you know and love here. THE most engaging and fun game I have played so far on my iPad2 (as of April 2012). A must for any nerds like me who appreciate style and story rather than shmup. Actually more room to explore here than many "3D" style games on iOS, although the style of the game looks much more platform/dungeon. You can retrace your steps, take different turnings etc, just like a proper game. No rails here. ✓ Excellent exploration/puzzle gameThis is just the right mix of exploration, story, and puzzles. The puzzles are not super challenging but they require some research. The overall story (with really great understated characters and dialogue, mostly), the beautiful environments, and the care given to the design of the ecosystem makes completing your research and your work feel like a meaningful accomplishment. A few minor issues: game center achievements made while offline will never be registered (this is not a big deal, but it is frustrating when an otherwise excellent game cannot get this basic element of mobile game design right), the save system is never transparent to the user, and certain aspects of the progress mechanic are likewise not clear (for example, your progress in a specific area can backslide without user input due to the natural evolution of the environment, which is really cool, but it is not clear how that impacts your overall progress through the game)..Version: 2.0

✓ Fantastic for nerd dad and savvy sonIs it really fun to wander around a cave and plant seeds? For hours? Yes. Yes, it is. I bought this as a shared game for me and my five-year-old, who's moderately game savvy. I was attracted by the sci-fi story, unique gameplay and graphics. And this app did not disappoint. We've played it together for dozens of hours, and finally just finished the story. For the first time. And my youngin' has already gone back to start it again. The story builds with near perfect pitch, revealing plot points in a way that's almost always interesting and nicely cumulative. Totally impressed with the developers' creativity when it comes to creating engaging challenges that don't simply revert to standard blow-it-up/kill-it actions. (I love a good FPS, but this is a great change of pace, and way more suitable for my young audience.) Also liked that the characters seem distinct, and appreciated the hints at further story outside of what we actually experience. And the scientific themes of research and experimentation were not lost on my five-year-old. A fantastic way for him to play around with those real-world concepts. A little more story upfront and at the end could've bookended the gameplay nicely without ruining the continuing narrative feel. But also it can be played at the Causal-level where if you die you get returned at where you were, before you got stupid, and with all your supplies. How to save your game is not readily apparent. 2. The fact that there are several possible endings is not obvious either. 3. They either just spin in circles accomplishing nothing and refuse to catch pods or just carry them around aimlessly, or they commit mass suicide leaving you with the time wasting chore of creating literally hundreds, spending hours at a time doing so only to have a bunch of corpses sitting at the bottom of lava pools and leaving you with the lowest biomass level possible. It's an obvious bug that I really wish the developers would fix. I've had a blast playing through a majority of the game, but ever since the latest update I can't even come close to reaching a biomass over 300 when I'm required to have at least 2500 just to progress. The gameplay is great, I really like the idea about reproducing life instead of destroying it. And all the different types of plants/creatures that are available. The research system is great and is a good thing to go back to if you're stuck. At the moment I am up to the part where you have to block a passage so that all the cold wind comes in, but I'm not sure exactly how to block it, but I'll get there :D. The deeper into the game play the deeper I found myself studying the different life forms and thinking through how to keep moving forward. I really liked the narration. Too many games I've played have the same track looped over & over, and having different characters with different personalities drew me deeper into the game. I don't consider myself a "gamer" so I like challenging, but not incredibly difficult games. This one fit the bill for me; and as the game progresses and more things are introduced, the complexity grows at a nice rate. Only issues are that it does get repetitive - you're essentially doing the same thing over and over again in each new cavern - and that it's far too hard to get the third ending without extra hours and hours of just grinding repetitive unsatisfying gameplay trying to max out the biomass (I don't see how it's even possible for some of the caverns) and there's not enough control with the jet packs to get the floating seeds to the fertile ground on floor (rather than ceiling). Jet pack 1 jerks all over the place, jet pack 2 is fast but unpredictable and jet pack 3 is smoother but too slow to keep up with the seeds..Version: 1.3.1

Do you require a set list of tasks to accomplish including the order in which you should accomplish them when playing any video game? Are you now, or have you ever been, Director Michael Bay? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, Waking Mars is probably not the game for you. If you appreciate a subtle playing experience where you are tasked with prodding a beautifully imagined and rendered dormant alien ecosystem into self-perpetuating growth, this game will be a good time for you. It would be unfair to call this a total ripoff of Aquaria, though the similarities are there. Aquaria focuses far more on fighting tough guys and bosses than solving puzzles -- in Waking Earth there are no bad guys to defeat, though there are a few to avoid. The graphics are better in Waking Mars, but the music isn't quite as good as Aquaria. Basically if you played Aquaria and thought it was stupid, you will think this is even stupider. On the other hand, if you enjoyed both it and, say, Superbrothers Sword and Sorcery, then you've got yourself a winner..Version: 1.1

There isn't a ton of walk through type material on the internet, so you are really on your own for how to get through it, but that just makes it that much better. If they release a sequel I will buy it immediately. Can't describe how great this game is, just buy it and let it take you in. Growing various types of alien flora is a profoundly peaceful, emotional, and tremendously interesting, engaging activity, and the vast assortment of characteristics or capabilities a plant may have contributes a great deal to the depth of the game, making it a unique, enjoyable experience. Nevertheless, the impression is all but destroyed by the cheap, tawdry, crudely cut out photos intended to represent the protagonist and his female associate. However charismatic the models might be, they look extremely ordinary, totally out of place and effectively break the immersive atmosphere of the game every single moment the portraits are displayed (which is pretty much all the time). The game itself deserves the highest rating possible, six out of five, yet the character portraits spoil it so much that I am tempted to reduce the rating to three. I think that the game would improve a great deal if those photos are removed, or if an option to disable them is made available in the game settings..Version: 1.3.1

Much like Dorothy, Dr. Lian enters into a mysterious world that is full of fascinating organisms, some of which are beneficial, some benign, and key to the doctor's continuing safety & well being, others that prove to be extremely dangerous, which will test his survival skills to the max. What makes this game fun is discovering which is which and this is accomplished by using a combination of the few resources the Dr has on hand, such as the very cool and indispensable Jet Pack, along with logical analysis to determine how to utilize each native Martian life forms' specific attributes to the best advantage. This app requires some patience while you think it through, step by step. The dialogue between you and another team member and an AI computer called "Art" back at the base explains the story. Most of the problems involve not killing enemies, but making things grow. The mechanics work well, the graphics are good even on the tiny iPod screen, and the challenges are interesting. You get a choice of difficulty levels; I play it at the easiest level because I'm just filling spare moments with it rather than dedicating myself to it. At the easiest level you can be "killed," but then you just have to start that piece of the game over. I don't know if this is true at the harder levels. ✓ Waking Mars 5 StarsWhere to start... Waking Mars is an amazing game, and the graphics are stunning. There's something about growing plants and opening Cerebrane on Mars enjoyable. ART adds to the fun of the game, with his weird sense of humour and voice, adds to the fun of the game. O truly recommend this game, I already have and my friends love it as well. ✓ One of the best games for the IPad!This has to be one of the best games available for the IPad. Intelligent, immersive, and engrossing, this game really gives you the feeling of what it would be like to be able to explore and control an alien ecosystem. Fantastic and interesting I think that the concept for this game must be unique on the App store. This game can be a little frustrating at times as one area you have spent quite a while improving becomes infested with one particular creature, but I guess this is realistic to what would probably happen in nature, and part of the game play. If you like intelligent games that don't just consist of bashing and hitting things, buy this game now! it is well worth the money considering how much work must have gone into it's development..Version: 1.3.1

✓ Really well made game...This is a top notch game that certainly won't be for everyone. However, for those who love adventure games like it, it's superb. The simple dynamics work well and the production values, aside from for forgettable music, are high.
