BBC Music Magazine for Negative User Reviews

New formatI really don’t like it at all. I find it very hard to navigate through it, and it’s nothing like reading the magazine. If I could go back to the old format, I would do so immediately..Version: 7.0.0

Going downhillThis app used to be great but as usual someone had to ‘redesign’ it. (Read not any better, just different and worse than before) Don’t give me new and worse. Where are the links in the magazines, where is the music, where is any ‘ease of navigation’??? This it really terrible. The actual physical magazine and cd are fantastic and amazing. This is not..Version: 8.7

Does Not Give Free Stuff!I thought it would let me read a magazine for free, but it won't let me!.Version: 3.1.23

Music gone againHave had this subscription for years. This is the third time I can no longer access the CD music. Please fix. Very frustrating and disappointing..Version: 5.6.5

Download problemI tried the free trial period, and managed to download the first edition (which was great), but for the next one available couldn’t get past 0% downloaded (despite leaving it overnight). The ap support is via a survey monkey form which doesn’t work - fields don’t accept any input..Version: 5.6.0

Free for print subscribers?Claims to give free access to print subscribers, but US subscriber numbers don't seem to work. And it's months later, and they still don't work. And as noted in July, the math is off, the 1 year sub being more than twice the 6 month sub. Face it, these people really want to annoy their american market. And in the latest version, the link to even try to enter your subscription details seems broken. sheesh..Version: 1.1.4

CrashesGreat magazine. Terrible app. The crashes have been going on for a week. Fix already or give a refund!.Version: 3.1.23

Very disappointingNo links to music app like Gramophone Magazine, can’t copy text to paste into Apple Music..Version: 7.0.0

Amp VideosUnfortunately the so called digital cd is in the format of a sample cd. I.E. You play the first track, then after that is finished you have to manually play the next track. Unbelievable, useless format. I can't sit down and just play it especially if I'm in my car, on my iPa, I can't just play it on my Bluetooth and enjoy, unless they fix this I'm never buying another copy, I love the digital magazine, the CD is useless..Version: 3.3.60

UnreadableUnreadable on the iphone6, don't bother. Other magazines have realised that they need to produce different layouts for iPhone and iPad in order for the work to be readable, clearly not this one... I can't believe no-one tested this and thought "gee that text is a bit small, perhaps this solution isn't fit for purpose".Version: 3.3.56

DisappointingThe magazine looks the same as the paper version with the addition of some music samples. However the "cover CD" is only playable a track at a time and only whilst the app is open! So, a continuous work, like Taverner's Protecting Veil, has to be heard in chunks - not good..Version: 3.1.21

Bug fix my...Their newest "bug fixes" made it impossible to open, while I'm still paying for issues I can't read..Version: 3.3.60

The BBC Music Magazine app has no accessibility at allI am registered blind, and use the iPhone large fonts feature, dark mode and zoom features to make the iPhone accessible. The app is has virtually no accessibility at all. It doesn’t use dark mode. There is no text reading mode. The zoom capability for the articles in the magazine is not good. While it is possible to zoom in to articles, this only goes so far, it is necessary to use the native zoom capability go go further, but the result is still quite small, but manageable. Note that sometimes when using this method, the screen goes blank and it is necessary to go back to no zoom, and get the page back to normal and start again. The real problem is with voiceover. There is virtually no voiceover support while reading, the only voiceover capability is the page turn slider, however if you use it, the pages don’t reader at all, and all you get is a blank screen. The app doesn’t use the iPhone large fonts feature at all. I think this is the worst magazine reading experience I have had on any device..Version: 5.6.0

Crash, crash, crashThis magazine is almost unreadable even if you get the magazine to open before it crashes, it will inevitably crash at some point when you turn a page..Version: 1.5.0

Very disappointed to lose Magazine copyI’m afraid the loss of magazine design turns this from a pleasurable coherent read into nothing better than consulting one of many music websites. The essential essence of the magazine is lost. Similarly the presentation of the cover discs is now just the sort of random streaming you can do anywhere rather than a magazine article with associated content. There is nothing left now to justify a subscription. N.Version: 7.0.0

Huge disappointment! As a subscriber and fan of the print edition, I was eager to try out this ap. Unfortunately, there is only an unresponsive window for print subscribers to register. Don't waste your time or your money on this, it doesn't function!.Version: 1.1.4

IOS 8 fail!Absolutely useless on iOS 8 - fails instantly.Version: 3.1.23

Challenging processFor every new issue, the download process is challenging and far from intuitive. That's true for via iTunes subscriptions anyway..Version: 3.2.31

Poor serviceNot only crash, crash, crash but no useful feed back following ios 8 impact. Please fix and update..Version: 3.1.23

No CD!Instead of the excellent monthly CD, you get an in-app streaming option. I'm guessing this is going to be squashed to 128kbps which is not what you want if you're the kind of person who reads a mag with an regular column on audio! I prefer to download 9600kbps files from HDTracks, but the 1411kbps of the CD is a minimum. Disappointed that this offering is so last-millennium!.Version: 3.3.37

New(ish) format is awfulI just can’t put up with this any more. I much prefer the “magazine experience” way of reading any magazine (others I subscribe to continue to provide that alongside the newer format). The ‘web’ like format might actually be bearable if it actually worked properly. I have a relatively new (2020) iPad Pro which I use to read 4 or 5 different magazines - only the BBC Music Magazine has such a flaky interface. Unable to scroll down some pages, skipping to next page for no good reason, doesn’t remember where in the magazine I have got to. I’m sorry but unless there is a significant improvement (and a return to the magazine format) my subscription will be cancelled..Version: 7.0.0

UselessI assume you will be issuing refunds to all your customers, since you clearly can't be bothered to keep your app up to date and working. For a company the size of the BBC, this is pathetic..Version: 3.1.23

Great Magazine, Not so great RedesignLoved loved loved the ability to read the magazine exactly like the print edition (but hyperlinked). This new design was not needed and severely detracts from the overall experience. Feel free to offer this as an option for those who want it, but please provide the classic experience for those who have enjoyed it that way for years..Version: 7.0.0

Customer service is completely MIAHaving a problem with the app because it does not recognize me as a subscriber. Tried to restore purchases, no luck. Try to log into my account online- fails, even with stored password. Try password reset, no email received. I finally try to just cancel because I don’t need the hassle. This magazine does not even appear in the drop down to select magazine. Complete frustration and customer service FAIL..Version: 8.7

Crashes under IOS 8Was always a bit unstable but will not start up at all under iOS 8. If you are going to take money under these subscriptions it is the duty of the provider to make sure it works. Ios8 dev kit has been around for a while so no excuses. Lazy..Version: 3.1.23

Back issues unavailable.Be warned - only purchase this if you intended to read recent issues. If you pay for back issues, you will find they are unavailable. Customer service is no help whatsoever..Version: 3.3.58

Not as good as the paper copyWARNING! the paper mag has a "free" cd with it...although you can listen to samples of the music discussed you don't get the "free" album that you get with the paper copy. This is the first and last I buy..Version: 1.1.2

Terrible App and Even Worse Tech SupportThis app has gone from mediocre to terrible. Every time a new issue becomes available, the app ceases to function and crashes. I have to delete it and reinstall it to get it to work (which means I have to redownload all of the issues that were archived on my device). Given the fact that downloading an issue is a long and cumbersome process (much longer than any magazine app I use). I have reported this on several occasions to their customer support and have not had the courtesy of a reply or fix. Many times have I truly thought of canceling my subscription because of this. I would also give e them a D+ grade in readability. They need to move to article view capability, like Condé Nast publications use, rather than the outdated “pinch to enlarge an article” approach..Version: 3.16.1

These guys need to get some remedial math training . . .A six month subscription is $26.99, while a twelve month subscription is $59.99. Hmmmm . . . seems to me I'd get the 6 month subscription, then let it renew in 6 months (for a total of 12 months), and I'd pay only $53.98 (saving $6.01 over the "great deal" on the annual sub). Lordy, and we all thought the British had some brains..Version: 1.1.3

Cannot access as a print subscriberFor years now the support site has stated that "Unfortunately there is no free access to the digital editions as part of a print subscription. In the future we hope to offer this function so that you can upgrade your subscription to enjoy both editions." This app is useless to me until or unless they ever get this fixed in the U.S..Version: 3.2.31

Great magazine, but...Thoroughly recommend the magazine for all the printed material. However, the lack of ability to play all the music from start to finish (one has to access each track separately) is a real bugbear, particularly for people like me who like to listen in the car. Am seriously considering returning to the print version because of this..Version: 3.15.0

Good app regressing!IPad Air with iOS 8.3 Ok, I have had trouble free use of this app for some time now but i am really frustrated at the recent change. Mags only seem to download if I am reading them so I order to have them on my wifi only iPad for reading on the train I need to pretend to read every page (!) at home to be sure they will be available off line. I've only just realised this as I had half a mag to read on the train tonight. I'm not happy with this and if not fixed I will cancel my subscription. Not worth the hassle..Version: 3.3.37

Change not goodThe latest update is poor in comparison to the previous version of the application: the interface provides more a series of individual and rather ‘clunky’ website-like pages rather than the excellent electronic but genuine magazine feel previously experienced. As with the previous version of the app., the so-called ‘Cover CD’ is a misnomer as playback does not provide a CD experience: the tracks do not play one-after-the-other, as per a CD, they each need starting separately; and playback stops when the iPad goes into screen saver mode or if one accesses another page in the magazine. Correcting this issue is, technically, simple to achieve. I’ve noticed that the August 2021 and earlier editions in my library do, indeed, display in the previous and much better magazine format but, the so-called ‘Cover CD’ has disappeared from each of these earlier editions. This is a serious problem as all these ‘Cover CDs’ are supposedly included as part of my subscription payment and, therefore, should remain accessible contractually. LJK - subscriber.Version: 7.0.0

PoorHaving been a print subscriber to BBC Music Magazine since it first began I thought I would try the digital version from Apple. It has been fine until the latest iOS 8 update. The app crashes. I have tried all the recommended solutions i.e deleting and reinstalling to no avail. I feel literally shortchanged. It is appalling that the customer is left in this limbo! If it is not fixed soon I will be withdrawing my subscription. A shame as the magazine is great..Version: 3.1.23

How Is This!!Got the app.. Might be missing something but have no clue where to find the magazine. Think I found it. But no clue whatsoever where the music is? How to get support. Extremely difficult app to navigate and I am good at that. Had to cancel since I have no clue how this app or magazine with the music works. Wasted some money on this. Too sad. Not User Friendly at all. It is called Customers... Make them happy and make it easy to use..Version: 3.3.60

CrashingHow do you get your money back.Version: 1.5.0

Back Issues IssueLove having all the issues on my device. However, I purchased the back issues and can only access them on the iPhone app, the iPad app will not show them even when I restore purchases. I have rebooted, reinstalled the app etc. etc. all to no avail. :-(.Version: 3.11.0

No US support and not mentioned except by reviewersWrote to confirm and this is the response ------ Thank you for your email. Unfortunately access to our iPad app is not currently free to our subscribers within the US, due to access issues. We are working to make this possible but do not have a specific date which I can pass onto you at present. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. -------- This should be noted on iTunes and in the magazine. Of course, should I pay, I can access the content. This therefore seems more like a (bad) business decision than a rights issue. And it certainly been managed badly..Version: 1.1.3

You know something is bad when...........the latest issue requires an update to the app and it offers to redirect you to a place where no update is available. I’ll thought-through, rookie error. The magazine is so-so with the reviews section increasingly crowded out by ‘popular’ twaddle..Version: 3.16.5

IPad appI say exactly the same as the first review..Version: 1.1.4

Pity you can’t give minus scores!I’m not a regular subscriber to the magazine but have used the app to download the magazine when the mood takes me. Last time was less than a year ago and the app worked perfectly. Downloaded the October issue and paid £6.99. Utter waste of time and money. Pages don’t load properly, pages don’t turn when swiped, crashes, in short utterly useless. This appears to be a case of trying to fix something that was never broken in the first place and ending up with an app that is unusable. Uninstalled and switching to another classical music mag. Hope the Beeb are happy about losing revenue due to this truly appalling app..Version: 7.0.0

Not recommendedI've persevered with this on and off for a long time now. It's just a glorified scroll about PDF. Reading experience is terrible. When is it going to be a proper iPad magazine like the BBC Focus..Version: 3.3.44

Appalling update Feb/22The updated version is a disaster. Slow download, bland design, you have to wait for pages to fill in, you have to scroll down to read pages as in a website. Oh for the old app! Thank god there’s still gramophone. Very sad about this. Rj759.Version: 7.0.0

BBC Music Magazine AppTruly terrible! This app fails to work in Ios8 despite installing 8.02. Great magazine but spoiled by lack of attention to user convenience. It never worked well; took an age to load and instal. But at least it worked. Now it doesn't..Version: 3.1.23

So far, a worthless app --- I want a full refund!I downloaded this app less than an hour ago and paid $6.99 for the October 2014 issue featuring Johannes Brahms. My iPad Air is running iOS 8.0.2. The download of the October issue took forever, but I was nonetheless looking forward to reading this issue. But this was not to be. A split second after I clicked on the issue to open it, the app takes me to the red BBC MUSIC screen, and then CRASHES 100%. I am totally unable to access even one page of the magazine online. I WANT MY MONEY RETURNED TO ME. You have ripped me off, whether intentionally or not. Does anyone know how I can get my $6.99 payment back from either Apple or BBC? (dated October 1, 2014).Version: 3.1.23

BugUnreadable until they fix the bug that makes the pages reload every 10 seconds making it impossible to read..Version: 1.1.3

Where's the free CD?Where's the free CD? The printed magazine comes with a free CD. This does not..Version: 1.1.2

Needs scalingAnd don’t be so naggy. I use this on my iPod Touch because I don’t have the right sort of Kindle nor any access to the print version. The problem is that on small screens, even with the ability to zoom in, reading articles is awkward and clunky. The magazine should be scalable so that it’s legible on any device. Also, the app is somewhat naggy, firing out various reminders of special offers in the grand tradition of last-chance-to-get-for-a-song..Version: 3.16.5

No US supportDoes not support free access (as it claims) to US print edition subscribers.Version: 1.1.3

Currently Unusable - Dec 2012This has never been the most stable magazine app compared to others that I subscribe to however currently the app constantly crashes. In addition somehow I have paid twice for latest issue that I have not been able to download. Very Disappointing!.Version: 1.5.0

Doesn't seem to workBought two issues. Never able to download them..Version: 1.5.0

A shocking messI wanted to be fair before I cancelled my subscription as I gave loved the magazine on my IPad. So I looked at the ‘new’ redesigned version again. It’s truly ugly and a shocker. It looks like it was put together on an old Amstrad. How could someone have let this happen?.Version: 7.0.0

App won't load since IOS8 UpdateSince updating the IOS update the app now crashes.Version: 3.1.23

Bery Bery CrashyWhat the hell? This is ridiculous. Please update and fix this....Version: 3.1.23

Mr HDoes NOT Work. Avoid. Might as well put your money in the bin. 0/5 stars..Version: 1.5.0

Mag good; app clumsyVery slow download. No search function to find specific articles or reviews. Makes having all these back issues kind of pointless..Version: 3.16.5

I'm rating this 1Nativex, once again, has failed to give my free platinum. They owe me more than 500 now. Scamming parasites..Version: 3.3.60

TerribleI purchase this months issue just to hear Horowitz and the music isn't even downloadable. Also can't hear the music without constantly opened screen. Terrible..Version: 1.5.0

Utter rubbishCannot download issues cannot get support utter crap. Not run by BBC and constantly directly to Apple for any support question. Sadly have to rate this one star because it won’t let me rate it no stars pathetic.Version: 5.6.4

What?Well, after calling the UK, being passed on from person to person, they gave me a number to call on the US, only to find out that the contents of this app is not available to customers on the other side of the pond… What? Get with the program, guys! Disappointing to say the least..Version: 1.5.0

Unhappy with the new formatAs others have mentioned, the changes indeed really ruin the user experience. I recently switched to a digital sub and I’m disappointed that reading the issues feels much like scrolling through a clunky website. The app before wasn’t perfect, but I’m sure most readers would prefer a user experience similar to reading the physical magazine, as it used to be pre-change. Please consider reverting back to the more readable older version..Version: 7.0.0

Content excellent, delivery poorTitle says it all really! The content is what it has always been - excellent. However, the app is disappointing. It works most of the time on my iPad but is erratic on older ones. The music, that is a proper CD with the printed magazine, is pathetic; seems low quality and will not play tracks automatically. You have play each one independently, one at a time! Why not provide a link to download them all?.Version: 3.3.60

Loss of Digitised Print Version DisaapointingIt’s a great shame that this new version of the app gives a clunky web-style version of the magazine rather than a digitised print version. It’s not an enjoyable experience at all. An outstanding magazine but this app really lets the world-class content down..Version: 7.0.0
