Top Gear Magazine for Negative User Reviews

Do not update this app if you already have it.This app was great until I downloaded the latest update, I subscribe to the printed magazine but with that subscription on the last version of this app I could log in and download all editions without having to pay for them again. But now that option has gone you can not log in with your printed subscription so you would have to pay again to have them on your ipad which I'm not prepared to do.. This is very disappointing that they have changed it. If I have missed something I will change my review but for now it's one star DO NOT UPDATE if you already use this app, you also loose all editions you have already downloaded in the previous version...Version: 2.1

Lacks refinement. Content much better than app (for that price)I choose the app because it's not easy to travel with 20kg of magazines. Or a gigantic crate with my dear Clarkson, May and Hammond stuffed in it. I still think they were the team I needed for a 10/10. Hope the 'new ones' will keep trying. As far as the app is concerned, not enough zoom and navigation possibilities on older issues. And, still, not enough on the more recent ones. It looks a bit like a 5 yrs old app. It does the job but not 1 % more. Petrolheads only. iPhone? If you are younger than 35 or have a 'macro view' button on the side of your head. Or glasses. Or both.Version: 2.2.50

Better but still annoying3.5 stars. They seemed to have finally figured out that having autoplaying movies with loud engine noises it not something everyone wants when READING a magazine. So at least now you don't have to constantly dive for the mute button when you decide to read quietly in public. The content and imagery is excellent but it's still wrapped in erratic, annoying and inconsistent design. Are you swiping up, down left or right to continue reading the same article this time? Why am I being told to swipe in a particular spot when i should be swiping next to the item instead? Why don't all images go full screen? If you can't zoom in to an image then at least make it enlarge. Thumbnail galleries are pointless. Plus, many more interactive "activities" to make every page more difficult to read. It's still forced landscape too (which as everyone knows is the most comfortable way to read on an iPad! Hope you all bought an Air!) but at least now they made the library forced landscape too so you are not spinning around. On the upside it's still far, far cheaper than buying a physical magazine subscription if you are in North America. So, pay less work harder to read it, or pay more and you'll be able to read it in more comfort and less time..Version: 2.1.59

DisappointingWhat a shame, this looks like a promising app but I won't be able to use it. The magazines I buy can't be downloaded. Just gives me an error message every time.Version: 2.1.38

New Version not GreatSo the app asked for a new review so here it is. Downloading an issue doesn’t work properly, and it still won’t remember your place in the magazine. If you want a higher mark than one star developers, how about fixing fairly glaring errors that were never prevalent until you decided it needed a new look..Version: 2.2.58

Awesome magazine, buggy as hell appThe magazine and stories are really great and entertaining to read. But the app is buggy and always has difficulty starting, remembering you or signing on. It works, eventually, but difficult to engage..Version: 2.2.10

Poor Quality AppApp is confusing and not at all user friendly. The subscription policy is unreliable and I know that I will not re-subscribe, although it has cut me off from my subscription two months early thus preventing me from viewing the last paid for editions. The content of the magazine itself is ok, although the writing is at times so pretentious to be unreal..Version: 2.2.55

Still not fixed. Purchased magazines still missing. Why are they even capable of destroying entire digital collections? This represents everything wrong with digital publishing. Once paid for they should have zero access to my library. Also to note, the re-downloaded issues look like bad jpegs with jagged lines and compression artifacts instead of the previous ultra high resolution and quality they used to have. It's currently more convenient to download pdf issues than it is to purchase them legitimately. Please stop punishing your customers..Version: 2.1.34

Why can I zoom some pages and not others?!?Excellent material, first class writing, but sometimes hard to see on an ipad mini. Some pages you can zoom in, some you can't. Oh well....Version: 2.2.10

Now UselessDoesn’t recognize my subscription via iTunes and therefore won’t let me read any back issues. Will be cancelling mine at the next renewal which is luckily next month..Version: 2.2.54

Can’t get Support question answeredBought the subscription through the App Store, upgraded to latest version. Now can’t login as no user / password issued or entered. Reported this 3 days ago and haven’t had a response yet.Version: 2.2.54

Ridiculous updateOther comments regarding the newly tiny fonts and forced landscape view are correct. Here's my issue - all previous issues have disappeared, despite using the "Restore All Purchases" fix suggested above by the publisher. After the automated response to an email complaint promised a response "in 24 hours," it took 3 days to get a form email asking me take all the troubleshooting steps I told them I'd already done (force restart app, restart iPad, uninstall and reinstall app). So now I get animated ads that I can't skip, but none of the previous content that I actually paid for..Version: 2.1

Only works with microscopeThe latest "patch" deletes all your current top gear magazines, leaving you the fun of restoring them again. And then, it's only in landscape with no zoom ability. What genius thought that taking away the portrait orientation was marvelous, and must be followed by making the type too small to read. And while we're at it, lets change the letters to the Cyrillic alphabet. (The last is an exaggeration, but you'll never know it because you won't be able to read anything.) At least we can look at the pictures, and guess what narratives should fit each review, perhaps making up our own. Yes, good testing is essential prior to release. In cars, and not surprisingly, in apps..Version: 2.1

Took my money can’t log inVery quick to take payment but can’t log in to access the magazine I just paid for. If digital app going to compete with physical copy in newsagent you need to give the customer the magazine when they pay for it! Very frustrating. Much better when it was on Readly..Version: 2.2.52

Can't read on planes:(I'm happy you have finally created an iPad version of our magazine, but it has a fatal flaw: It craps out if you try to read it without wifi (3G). This means I can't read my magazines on the subway, on a train or on a long car trip. This for me is a deal breaker. It is exactly the opposite of what a publication s meant to be. Unfortunately I have just subscribed for another year. Honestly, if this not corrected I will be forced to cancel. Sorry guys.Version: 2.1.34

Weak effortI was expecting more, but the subscription price is obscene for a really poorly executed mag. I'll go back to buying the hard copy (sometimes) and my subscription to the very excellent Evo mag on my iPad..Version: 1.1.0

0 starsBring back Clarkson, May and Hammond!.Version: 2.2.10

No contentI have been charged for my subscription but the app does not give me any content. Just asks me to subscribe (again). So, have paid and received nothing..Version: 2.5.8

The Brits do it againMuch like the Triump TR8 or Aston Maritn Logonda, they have taken a good working idea and added features that are neither needed or wanted, while removing those that were wanted. Lack of zoom, even though it says there is a zoom in the guide, landscape only, I wanted to read a magazine is all!! I hope that they look to the experience of the British auto industry, not exactly a great business and try to restore what we had. Until it is resolved I recomend that you stay with the old app! Do I really need to read Jeremy's editorial with fake background wizzing by? Don't think so..Version: 2.1

Do NOT use the latest version with an iTunes subscriptionI have had a valid Top Gear magazine iTunes subscription for a few years now, but as of the latest update, I cannot access any of the old issues, and so called support are USELESS, no responses whatsoever. Steer well clear until/if they fix it....Version: 2.2.54

Cant zoomIt's frustrating that you cannot zoom into the text....why must web pages be easier to use?!?!?.Version: 2.2.50

Cannot read any magazinesI’ve been a digital subscriber, via iTunes, for many years. However, with the recent ‘upgrade’ I cannot access any of the magazines, even after hitting ‘Restore purchases’, which always used to work. Sort it out please, now..Version: 2.2.54

Just don't buy itI regularly buy Top Gear, Car and Autocar and thought I'd tidy the house up a bit by getting this app. Seriously - don't bother. Upon getting the app and eventually figuring out the subscription approach, I was set and... no magazine. I assumed I'd get the latest edition to start the subscription but no. So I bought a one off edition for that month to find that days and days later - the same edition appeared as part of my subscription. However, this month's issue is stuck there as a Click to Preview. It's out on the news stands and it's offering to sell me the edition but my subscribed edition has not arrived. Beyond frustrating. Yes I'm logged in. Yes I've looked at the outdated FAQs (summary - turn it off and turn it on again). Doesn't seem like the developers understand the Newsstand app is like the undead - you can't kill it without a stake through the heart of the screen. Only Harvard Business Review comes close to this annoying level of incompetence. Steer clear... look at the other reviews....Terrible app - I want my money back on my useless subscription..Version: 2.1.59

DisgustedI bought the Junes issue on this app and was quite frankly disgusted by the amount of advertising in it (every second page almost). It also didn't have any interactive features as other magazines do. Being a loyal top gear fan for many years I feel disappointed with such a poor effort....Version: 1.1.0

Non existent supportI paid for a subscription up front and after 2 months I was unable to log in. Resetting password doesn’t work and I’m still waiting for a reply from top gear to a mail I sent weeks ago for help. Waste of money..Version: 2.3

Has not worked since JanuaryI purchased a subscription in January 2014 and have not been able to access a single issue since then. I have contacted support and was told that "an update was coming". What a load of garbage. This was $35 USD and I have not been able to load even one single issue. Absolutely worthless..Version: 2.1.64

Lost to Cost CuttingI love(d) Top Gear. I won’t get into the politics, etc but I *will* get into what’s changed and the three things (one since fixed) that the most recent changes to the digital version of the magazine have lead me to write this (scathing?) review. 1. Low resolution scans of print edition. Just what I want on my 12.9” iPad Pro! Echoes of the old [failed] Flash/PDF magazines of a decade or two ago. 2. Download a bit of the whole magazine at a time. Wait, what?! - I read this magazine when I travel. You know, in an airplane, without data to download the next page... how did this *ever* become an issue that I need to mention? The medium was the message... 3. [fixed] rotation: only one way to hold the iPad to read the magazine. Seriously? Solution: I have put my money where my mouth is; I have turned off auto-renew. Hopefully these issues are fixed, although cost-cutting is usually a death knell....Version: 2.2.55

HorrendousDoesn’t let me log in. Doesn’t remember place in magazine. Doesn’t remember my password. Chocolate teapot Subscription cancelled.Version: 2.3

Needs some serious thinking to improve the appAs much as I love Top Gear magazine, I regretfully must say the app is one of the most primitive apps I've come across. Several reasons: 1) You cannot easily see only the issues you have downloaded. Really really an eyesore as I'm bombarded with every single issue on opening the app. 2) Cannot download multiple issues in one go. Only downloads one issue at a time. That is so stupid in this day and age of multitasking. 3) Cannot download issues in the background. Ie cannot download when reading an existing top gear issue or when the top gear app isn't open. All the above points are already done by other magazine apps such as STUFF and Men's Health so what's stopping Top Gear to add such basic functionalities?.Version: 2.1.59

Well that’s the end of that thenI have been a subscriber of Top Gear Magazine for many years, but, the latest version of the app has caused me to cancel my subscription. The previous version worked excellently, on my iPad, in landscape mode, when sat on my desk. The latest version doesn’t even support that. The navigation is poor and I find I am spending more of my time fighting my way around. It’s a shame that, although the content is as always fantastic, the new delivery mechanism should fail in such a catastrophic way. If you ever bring back the old version, let me know and I will resume my subscription..Version: 2.2.54

No zoom after updateForced to read in landscape mode if you can call it that as you can no longer zoom in so text is to small and unreadable. Did someone test this at all I expected more.. Needs to be fixed ASAP as ready is impossible..Version: 2.1

Ambitious, but rubbishSince the 'upgrade' a few months ago this app has become effectively unusable. It's all very well having tons of interactive features but when the download size has ballooned to 600MB per issue, when the download fails more often than not and when the app crashes half the time on any given page, it's an utter waste of time and a massive turn for the worse. I want a magazine I can download and read quickly and reliably. A mostly non-functional 'interactive experience' which majors in being an experience in frustration isn't what I want. Subscription cancelled..Version: 2.1.38

Slow and buggyVideos take forever to load - start and stop as data streams. Pages partially load, then stop. Love the magazine, but the does not unfortunately seem to be a working alternative to the print edition. The pieces that work seem great - has potential, but does not appear ready for prime time..Version: 2.1.64

ReviewYou are always asking for one and it is a pain..Version: 2.6.1

New update terribleWith the latest update you always need wifi to view current issues. It runs extremely slow and sometimes won't even load. Serious lag between pages as well. Latest update is awe full. Please fix or revert to the previous..Version: 2.2.10

App RUINED by last updateLatest update ruined what was a perfectly good app. Can’t make it go to landscape mode (most convenient way to read in my opinion) and turning pages got slow and irresponsive. Will not renew my subscription.Version: 2.2.54

Stay where I was!Seriously TG. Just because I went to a different app to reply to a message doesn’t mean I want you to go right back to the start and choose which magazine I want. Then choose the same artical I was reading 5 seconds ago..Version: 2.6.0

Can not find your detailsThis app membership was offered after my print sub failed during Covid. Useless because it won’t recognise my login details..Version: 2.3

Content Great, App NotThe magazine content is terrific! The new app with all it's interactivity would be great also, if it ever worked. The app crashes constantly. I haven't been able to read the magazine for months for which I paid for a subscription because the app is so terrible..Version: 2.1.38

PoorVery disapointing, no interactivity, videos or anything that makes magazines on the iPad great. Lift your game Top Gear.Version: 1.2.0

"Cannot update library...An error has occurred" . Welcome to iOS 8 w Top Gear app!.Version: 2.2.0

Dysfunctional APP and support staffI purchased this APP in December 2013. I am able to sign in and am recognized. However, I am not able to access my paid subscription. The only option which appear are to extend my current subscription or to again purchase a single monthly issue. I have exchanged at least eight emails with the service and each time I am promised a fix is in the works. I still do not have access to my magazine and am out 25 pounds..Version: 2.1.59

Waste of moneyDisgraceful....... I was totally bombarded by advertising to the point of not knowing whether I was looking at an article or another ad! Further more there is no interaction, may as well just have a standard mag. This is a very poor effort, I couldn't even manage to read it in a sitting. Try the "Motoring" magazine app, it's free and it makes TG look like a joke..Version: 1.1.0

Can’t access subscription after latest updateRestoring my subscription is not working after the latest app update and I can’t access any magazines despite renewing ,y subscription!.Version: 2.2.54

Does not work with my iPadDown loaded iOS 12.5.4 for my iPad Air today & the Ap will no longer Open. Apple have concluded my iPad is working correctly after returning to Factory Settings. I renew my Annual Subscription next week & need help Terry.Version: 2.5.1

No zoom possible in some pagesThe app won't allow you to use zoom in some of the pages. cant read the txt in ipad mini. please rectify it..Version: 2.2.10

I can’t get to the home pageI can’t exit the current magazine! Please fix ASAP!.Version: 2.2.51

Below averageOrdered a subscription last month but when the new month arrived it is not available for download (3 days into the new month). All subscriptions are automatically set to renew. Have not found what settings or who to contact will disable auto renew. Price very high for electronic media..Version: 2.1.34

Why? (don't update!)I used to love the old version of the app, I have a mag subscription, but liked being able to take it with me with the iPad when I was out, the new version of the app breaks that though. There is no way I'm subscribing to the app and the mag separately which seems to be the way you have to do it now! Why has the option gone? And more importantly why are you not warned that this will happen before updating the app? I'm hoping I've missed the option somewhere, but doesn't see, to be the case..Version: 2.1

Poorly designedShould give option to mute the stupid app.Version: 2.1.45

Constantly FailsI constantly have trouble trying to read the magazines. It keeps telling me I have no subscription. I have to log out then re-login. Sometimes it won’t let me read some issues then another day it allows me. The telephone help line are beyond useless. GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK.Version: 2.5.3

Latest update does not work eitherBought 6m subscription through iTunes and downloaded Dec issue. It disappeared on last update and the cog-restore issues- procedure did not work. Today downloaded fix and still does not allow me to see the Dec issue I already had!.Version: 2.1.34

Extremely underwhelmedI've been waiting for this for ages, having regularly been reading Focus magazine purely on the app for a year now. So imagine my disappointment to see that instead of using the same brilliant format as Focus, this 'crApp' is just a PDF, unreadable on most pages without continuous zooming and panning. Surely this lesson was learned 16 years ago with the web - if we enjoyed viewing content in this way, browsers and HTML would never have been needed. Very poor 'app'. Somebody needs shooting at TG for not doing it properly like Focus magazine did..Version: 1.1.0

Waste of time - subscription cancelledI first downloaded this app because I got a free subscription on iPad with the magazine. It took weeks to find my subscription it had apparently been 'lost', this was finally sorted out and I was happy with Top Gear on iPad. I then updated the app only to find that this had been taken away from me, and unbelievably they have 'lost' my subscription AGAIN!!!! I have now lost faith in this company and have now cancelled my subscription altogether, after reading Top Gear for over ten years..Version: 2.1

Great but unstable. My keeps on crashing on my iPad..Version: 2.1.34

Latest update is awfulI’ve been happily enjoying this for years, but the latest update is hateful. It won’t bookmark pages. You can’t zoom in at all, even to enlarge the text, never mind the photos. I haven’t seen any interactive content yet. Basically it’s now a pdf version but without the zoom option. I probably won’t renew my subscription because great content is hidden behind a substandard app/interface..Version: 2.2.54

Poor, very poorVery disappointing. No interactivity, poor formatting for the medium. So many better apps out there, Motoring for example, and Motoring is free.Version: 1.1.1

Latest software is frustratingThe old downloadable magazine was a solid performer and took minimal space on a modern smartphone. The latest is slow, reliant on connectivity even in download form with frequent request timeouts interrupting. The “specials” content is great but the reading format seems to be incompatible with a smartphone and is forever scaling and hard to read. Shame as general content is very good..Version: 2.2.54

Yea you loose the stars and get evans. Its lost its mojo. I’m sorry I don’t care about Chris Evans’ view on anything especially not cars. Some good journalists still, but Car Magazine is better by far now as they don’t have Chris Evans..Version: 2.2.11

Prepare to be disappointedYou might as well scan your the physical edition of TG and open it in a PDF reader, it would be the same experience. Super poor effort in regards to user interactivity and engagement especially in comparison to other less reputable magazines that are doing a far better job. What gives?.Version: 1.1.0

Lots of bugs with this app.Unfortunately the download time for this app is extreme. I could get in the car drive to the newsagent and pick up some milk as well as the magazine in the time it takes to download. I've not had this problem with other iPad magazines or papers. I cannot view the covers of the issues unless I buy them (and even then it's hit and miss). So I am not sure what I'm getting until I've bought it. Reminds me of those covers they stuck on naughty magazines... I didn't think Top Gear is x rated! When downloading you can start reading the magazine and if you close the app to do anything else the download pauses! So you can't download in the background. I've got an iPad 2 and a new iPad and I have only so far downloaded on the iPad 2, so I'm not sure of these are iPad specific problems. Great magazine in theory, and it's often out of stock at the newsagent so if you don't mind being patient for 10 minutes and dealing with a few amateur programming issues for your £2.99 then go for it. Otherwise just get in the car and buy the paper one..Version: 1.1.0

BlahFree preview edition is a couple of random pages, if you want me to subscribe give me a full issue even if its back issue. Funny how there is no advertising in the preview. Im sure thats not how it is.Version: 1.1.0

Great iPad content rendered unusable by updateI have enjoyed reading Top Gear Magazine in its printed form for years, but living in New York it was always expensive and late to get hold of. I couldn't help but think there had to be a better way. Apple rolled out the iPad and as soon as it was available I subscribed to the magazine through Zinio. Their rubbish delivery (late) felt like a step backwards, and I leapt onto the app distributed through Apple's Newsstand. All the waiting was gone and I could enjoy the magazine as soon as it came out. Hooray! Then came the latest update, and suddenly it's all gone very wrong. No portrait view? No zoom? I can only guess that they released this app without testing it at all. I'm sure there must be lovely features and lots of bells and whistles, but I haven't experienced any of them because they have rendered the magazine unreadable. Maybe it's all part of an upcoming episode of the show where Clarkson, Hammond. and May take it upon themselves to re-design the iPad app? I don't think so, because even the Hammerhead Eagle iThrust was better conceived, and tested according to the video footage of testing that the boys put together, and the Reliant Robin Space Shuttle was more successful. SORT IT OUT!.Version: 2.1

Doesn't work on iOS 8.1On iPhone 6 plus with iOS 8.1. When I first turned on the app it jumps right into topgear watches (one of the free issues I suppose). Wondering where the main screen is, clicked on one of the image, the navigation bar shows up, clicked on the back button, nothing happened. The navigation bar was gone, and further clicking did not bring the navigation bar back. Closed the app completely and turned it back on, only got a white screen and the app would never load from that point. Please fix..Version: 2.2.0

Totally unreadable app. Magazine OKI took up top gears offer of some 99p issues and thank god I only bought 2. This app is all over the place. I can't read a single page without it jumping about. There is no zoom facility (just a mag glass with a line through it???) so you have to sort of gently swipe about to read the different columns. And it doesn't go where you want it to go either. At one point, I ended up back in the library section when I was trying to read a bit at the bottom of the page. This 1 star is for this hopeless app. The magazine is fine..Version: 2.1.38

Sometimes less is just less. There has been a gradual decline in the functionality of this app and the new update has sunk even lower. At one time it was possible to resize the pages on the screen, click on links, images and additional content. Now, sadly, the resizing is no more and links virtually none existent. I’m sure the photographers put a lot of thought into taking the shots that fill the magazine, only to find that many are too small to really appreciate when they appear in the magazine’s app. Save for doing a bit for the environment by saving on paper and transportation costs there’s now little to gain from going digital..Version: 2.2.54

AppallingSubscribed in may- an update meant I couldn't download issues for three months, customer support were USELESS and also couldn't refund me. Latest date has solved that but now I can't zoom by pinching, on some issues it also doesn't rotate to portrait view, so have to read it in landscape with two pages spread across the screen. Not to fear I've invested in a magnifying glass to read future issues. Seriously, this app needs much better support and someone who knows what they're doing. don't subscribe to this, get the paper issue..Version: 2.1

Can’t viewPaid the subscription via my iTunes account for the year but not allowing access and it keeps wanting to charge me again to view!.Version: 2.2.52

PoorSubscription worth it, just such a poor app you can’t make the most of it. Doesn’t recognise my subscription, so have to logout then login to even read an edition every time open the app or switch to another month. Such a letdown, get a print subscription instead.Version: 2.3

Not working with iOS7Since I've upgraded my iPad to iOS7 none of the issues I've purchased will display..Version: 2.1.45

New version won’t loadI can no longer use the app since the latest version was installed. It will no longer load. Apparently only way to report an issue is by opening the app and clicking report an issue! Any guidance gladly welcomed.Version: 2.5.1

Constantly crashes.Version 2.5.1 constantly crashes at the splash screen when I try to launch it on my older iPad running iOS 12.5.4. It was running just fine before the latest iOS update. It works fine on my newer iPhone but why am I stuck downloading PDF copies, that are formatted for print, for offline viewing? It used to download the full-featured digital copy formatted for my device. If I wanted something formatted for print I would have subscribed to the print magazine. At least I wouldn’t have to squint to look at it! If the offline content doesn’t revert back to the way it used to be when my subscription comes up for renewal, you are losing a customer..Version: 2.5.2

New update is uselessIf you’ve subscribed via iTunes app then you’re screwed as it won’t let you read your past issues unless you subscribe directly and pay again Have reinstalled app. Still doesn’t work. Have reported this twice through the apps own bug reporting function and no reply in 2 weeks. My subs finish at end of this month and won’t be renewing. Should be zero stars as app doesn’t work..Version: 2.2.54

Please fixUpdated the app, restored my purchases and now the pages are stuck in landscape mode....the writing is soo small that I can't read it! And you can't even enlarge the images or the writing!!! Sure I like to look at the pictures, but I would also like to read the articles! Please fix!.Version: 2.1

Won't RunWon't run on my 1st gen iPad. The parts I can see look brilliant but overall a waste of money for me! Crap! I really wanted this too!.Version: 2.1

Excellent content, awful appThe content is as great as you would expect if you're even considering a subscription. The app is awful. Half the the time, you can't figure out which way to swipe to go where you want. Up, down, left, it's crazy. And PLEASE PLEASE stop the auto playing videos! You open the app in a quiet setting to read for a bit, and all of a sudden the air is filled with the scream of a V12, shortly thereafter followed by the screams of people telling you to shut up..Version: 2.1.45

RUINED!!!What have you done to this app?? It’s completely ruined!!!why is the picture quality worse??Why are all the back issues now PDFs?!?!?!?? I’m furious. There was nothing wrong with the previous version of the app so why did you have to mess it up. Fix this or I’m unsubscribing!.Version: 2.2.54
