Ultralingua for Positive User Reviews

More than a dictionaryI have use this app since a long time when I had a Palm Pilot until now that I have an IPad..Version: 2.6

PerfectJust Superb...Version: 2.3

Great AppI use it in conjunction with Google Translate, and I find the 2 indispensable..Version: 2.6

Easy to useAn easy to use bi lingual dictionary which has helped me with my Spanish over many years. Clear and extensive definitions Spoken words for pronunciations Very good verb conjugation included Much easier than leafing through a big heavy book. Kevjoiner uk.Version: 2.8

Ultralingua Fantastic! An amazing application and once you start to really use it..one realizes how useful it can be to learn the language. It is my constant companion!!!.Version: 2.9

I love this appThis is so good - I have the French, French-English and French thesaurus add-ons and find it’s worth paying for quality. Love it on both the iPhone for quick reference - and the iPad. Love the verb conjugation - before that I only had 3 tenses.. in my repertoire. Love the fact that it gives plenty of examples too. Would love a french - english ‘slang’ add-on to bring my granny-french up to date. How about it?.Version: 2.4.1

WonderfulI hesitated to buy this because I already have a HUGE paper dictionary. But now most of my content is on the iPad, including music, books, podcasts. It is so much faster to look up words with the app. I study French and this is a big step forward for me in terms of what's in my toolbox for learning. I like the favorites feature because I can then make my own flashcards from special new words I want to remember. I am glad I have it now on my iPad!.Version: 2.3

Great all-around appI use this app frequently everyday, and I'm very pleased with the variety of dictionaries, the regular updates and the support. I have more than once emailed support and received a considerate and rapid response. I will say that the dictionaries (specifically Portuguese-English and French-English) don't appear to be as complete or thorough as other dictionaries. I have to sometimes use a dedicated Portuguese-English dictionary to dig up some words and to get some etymology. This is by far Ultralingua's weakness. They need to improve their current dictionaries or supplement with larger/better ones. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the app and like having it all together in one app. Other suggestions: 1. Make it easier to look up another word / clear out the old entry. The "x" to clear is rather annoying. A keyboard short-cut would be an excellent option when I'm using the dictionary on my iPad (with keyboard)! 2. Allow the customer to list their dictionaries in custom order. Thanks.Version: 2.3

Good, but slowerI like the new combined bookshelf- it always seemed pointless to have multiple apps from the same company. The new interface is nice, but it'd be even better to have graphic icons when picking from the list of available dictionaries. I don't have many, but a graphic is always easier to recognise than some text. You could just use the icons from the standalone apps. Another negative is the search/dictionary lookup feels slower in the new versions (in the standalone apps too) probably because it goes straight to the entries now, rather than giving you a list of words to pick from first. Nevertheless as a user I'm left feeling like the process is slower (maybe give more visual feedback during the search process).Version: 2.3

Near perfection!I've been using this app for years and the interface keeps improving! You can easily find verb conjugations by typing in any form of the verb. The interface is clean, simple and uncluttered. Plus, the search history and customizable favorites make this a great study tool. *** MY ONLY COMPLAINT is the tiny "x" button to erase the word. Sometimes, I need to tap this two or three times before it responds. It would be better if you could just tap once in the entry box and start typing a new word immediately instead of wasting an extra second or two trying to erase the last entry..Version: 2.3

Very handyThis is really very handy. You can look up a word on your phone and TRUST it (unlike with Google translate or Wiltionary). You can flip quickly between languages and you can look up conjugations. I use it several times a day. Indispensable..Version: 2.9

BravoExcellente version.Version: 2.3

AwesomenessLove Ultralingua....Version: 2.6

Very convenient and helpfulCoordinating my three dictionaries (so far) in one app is very convenient: excellent idea! It is true that these bilingual dictionaries cannot replace the far more ample versions on my library shelves, but I cannot take them with me. The two forms, app and hard copy, are complimentary, each withs pros and cons. This app and three dictionaries was a worth while investment. Its search function is improved and welcome, allowing finding forms of verbs I've not recognized..Version: 2.3

I like best Ultralingua appI am glad that I learn a dictionary for both German and English. I also need to Japanese dictionary. Please available on Ultralingua Japanese!.Version: 2.3

Much improved except very slowI like the new set up and conjugations incorporated. My only complaint is that it is now really slow..Version: 2.3

Very useful, no network requiredI disabled my data plan while travelling abroad because the global plans were really expensive. Being able to use a multi-lingual dictionary off the network was invaluable. This program is attractive and extremely easy to use. I especially like being able to enter any form of a word (plural, conjugated, etc.) from either language and getting directed to the right definitions. Also, the definitions are thorough, and there are lots of example phrases. I use Ultralingua on both my iPhone and my iPad, and I love it. (Nice updates since first launch. Actual improvements.).Version: 2.0.2

Works smoothly and looks beautifulThe redesigned interface looks great and makes it easier to look up words in either direction quickly. I also love that the verb conjugations are bilingual and also available without having to switch modes on my iPhone. The favorites is great for those tricky words that I never can quite remember. I also like how the history function works..Version: 2.0.2

5 starsThe best dictionary..Version: 2.7

A linguistic milestoneSimple, crystal clear and accurate: excellent! Love it..Version: 2.2

Excellent app, but pricey. As a learner of several languages, it's really great to have an app that consolidates all my dictionaries. I love that you can search for a word within all the dictionaries at once in the Ultralingua app. Also love the integration w Collins dictionaries, because they have excellent conjugation lists and phrase explanations. All in all great app. Would be nice to see an Arabic dictionary soon. My only other problem is that each dictionary is quite pricey, so you really need to be prepared to invest in them..Version: 2.6

Great!Very helpful and easy to use.Version: 2.3

C'est génial! This app is the best thing since <du pain en tranches>. I've had it for over a year and I'm wearing it out. It must contain the equivalent number of entries of a very fat dictionary - I very rarely can't find what I'm looking for - and it sure beats the hell out of carrying around a fat dictionary. It gives really good, current examples of usage in context, and possibly best of all, it will conjugate verbs in any tense with a tap on the screen. I have two minor gripes with the new version of the app - on my iphone 4 screen it flickers when I'm scrolling through a long entry and it can be a bit 'laggy'. Also it would be great if the 'conjugations' links were tinted a bit darker so you're less likely to hit them by accident when you're looking for a definition. I didn't much like the default font in the new version (it was a bit fussy and distracting) but quickly discovered how to change it. Really good app..Version: 2.3

A breakthrough in mastering a foreign languageWhat app does is shorten the time between when you hear a word you don't know and when you find what it means so that it wins the race with the normal decay in mental activation that starts the moment you realize you hit an unknown word. In other words, you find the meaning of the unknown word before you get distracted by something else or forget what the word was. Particularly when you combine this dictionary with a flashcard app it becomes really powerful. Armed with this type learning support and internet radio plus a few books, the only barrier to learning a new language is motivation. Of course if also really helps to have something to talk to in your new found language..Version: 2.3

Excellent aid to communicating in SpanishMy husband and I have Ultralingua with us all the time for communicating with Spanish speaking friends. We can move quickly between languages and the grammar is now more accessible than ever. Includes lots of common expressions too. I hope to see even more expressions in the future..Version: 2.7

Best Language Dictionary CollectionI use the French and German to English dictionaries. The newly redesigned layout is amazing on the iPad. Being able to see conjugations and definitions all seamlessly on one page is incredible. You don't have to hit the reverse button to search words in either language. Everything is so crisp and fluid. Hands down the only app to get for translation and conjugations! The only change I would like to see is an added grammar page of noun, pronoun, and adjective declensions, like a small grammar handbook..Version: 2.3

It keeps getting better and better!I use it heavily for Italian and French in an academic setting..Version: 2.7

GorgeousOk, so this dictionary app is quite useful - amazing search that catches misspellings and searches both(!) languages, easy lookup of words used in the definitions (that is an awesome feature, by the way!), good conjugation, etc - all that stuff they say in the marketing text. But really, it's beautiful. The default font is gorgeous, the 'favorite' dog-ear is cute as hell, and switching languages is kind of fun (how do you make something like that fun?!). I mostly just use the English dictionary, but having the thesaurus and the English-Spanish all together in one app makes it so easy and just, well - pleasing - every time..Version: 2.1

Brilliant !Highly recommend !!!.Version: 2.3

Great programKeep up the good work..Version: 2.3

A constant companionSo, I haven't written many reviews on iOS apps, but feel this one is deserving of it. As I study and teach languages I've found this application to be my constant companion. I love that it can be used on both iPhone, iPod and iPad with the same license and wish there was more integration with the MacOS version. Please bring the MacOS flash card feature to the iOS version and sync the two would be all I can imagine as possible improvements. I feel this is the dictionary standard on which all will be compared and judged. Keep up the great work. I also want to mention the Bookshelf app that unites their various dictionaries is brilliant and something that others can only dream of..Version: 2.9

Portuguese English Dictionaries (both of them) are Awesome!Olá! I purchased both the Ultralingua Portuguese-English Translation Dictionary and Verbs and the Collins Portuguese-English Translation Dictionary and Verbs apps / dictionaries. They are both sold / run through the Ultralingua bookshelf app, and they're fantastic and easy to use. I especially love how they are fully functional off-line, and customer support was excellent. For clarity, the “apps” are dictionaries (Ultralingua version, and the Collins version). They, and all other Ultralingua dictionaries, are run through the Ultralingua bookshelf, thereby making it super easy and convenient to flip back and forth between the two. I am studying European Portuguese, and both dictionaries have a mix of European and Brazilian Portuguese. Hopefully my review will help you decide which dictionary to purchase, or if you want to buy both. Either way, I feel they are worth every penny / Euro cent and more. Note that both dictionaries pull from the same database of verbs, and the conjugations are **excellent**. I love how the English translations are listed right below the verb tenses (a million of them, right? 😱) so you know exactly what is, for example, the meaning / correct usage for a Pretérito mais-que-perfeito composto (PMQPC). Like what the heck is a PMQPC???? Portuguese is such a difficult language, and these apps / dictionaries are super helpful. BTW, the PMQPC, which even as initials is difficult to type 😳, is the equivalent of the Past Perfect in English (ex: I had studied…) And one more note about the verbs: The verb count is around 6000+ for both English and Portuguese. The verb database tends to have more verbs than are found on the dictionary side, meaning you can look up a verb on the conjugation screen that might not be found if you searched from the dictionary screen. The biggest difference between the two dictionaries: Ultralingua has more words translated, Collins has more phrases. One suggestion for the developers: please add a flashcards feature (like you have for your desktop version) so words can be easily added to create a study list. This would make it a 10-star app. A couple notes about this review and the other Portuguese dictionaries and verb apps I’ve purchased or downloaded: 1. I own a kazillion apps, and this is the first review I’ve ever written (please don’t skewer me for being radio silent in the past). I took the time to write this because it was hard for me to choose between the two, and hopefully this helps y’all through the decision-making process. 2. I have many other Portuguese study tool apps, and while my limited budget guides my purchase decision (e.g. freebies or less expensive apps), I will say these two dictionaries were well-worth the money spent. Hope this helps!.Version: 2.7

Good but not perfect yetGood but still there are some issues to solve..Version: 2.4.1

Best for learning a languageAccess to all definitions of a word and all conjugations of verbs. Easy to use..Version: 2.9

Nice updateVery nice update. The integrated dictionaries are wonderful!.Version: 2.3

Best language app I’ve foundI’ve used this for years, and I have zero complaints. Easy to use, no internet needed, rapid and efficient customer support—which I’ve needed just once in all this time. But I would kill for a Danish-English. Any chance of that?? Puh-leeze!.Version: 2.9

Great App!I’ve used many foreign language dictionaries in the past but none compare to this one. Easy to use and, for the most part, very comprehensive. Only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars: would like to see more in-depth usage examples. Also, I’m often surprised at omissions and occasionally have to go to another source to get the translation I need. Otherwise, highly recommended..Version: 2.7

Great improvementI am really enjoying the new update. Much easier to use..Version: 2.3

Very niceLove the update.Version: 2.3

Excellent *concise* dictionaryAlthough I was originally looking for an extensive, unabridged French-English dictionary in electronic form, I was unable to find one for under a few hundred dollars in CD-ROM form. So I ended up with this (Collins-Robert Concise French Dictionary) and have been extremely pleased! I have been able to rely on this, to a great degree, for translation of academic texts. I find this version user-friendly; its conjugations and plethora of idiomatic expressions are especially helpful. My main complaint is also in the realm of idioms--occasionally (according to the French professor with whom I collaborate on translations) the nuances captured in the dictionary are off, or the expression does not appear at all. And predictably, specialized or unusual vocabulary--to be found in most unabridged dictionaries--sometimes does not appear at all. But in terms of how this app advertises itself, I cannot imagine a better basic dictionary that covers 90% of my needs--and for $20! Pleased indeed..Version: 2.3

Earlier fonts were betterThis is still the best for me but honestly the earlier version was better for me and was more user friendly. Letters in earlier version were bolder and easier to read..Version: 2.3

The best app when u learn SpanishThis app is superb! It's easy to use , works without Internet and its been great help for me! Recommend !!!! Love it!!!.Version: 2.3

Easy to use, but with one problemLike many have said, this app and the separately purchased dictionaries work well. However, unless I haven't set the app up correctly, at least for me there is a serious problem. When words are marked as favorites, words from from different languages appear in the same list. I never want the words to mix. I have French, Spanish and German all mixed together, making the favorites quite useless for me. I'm never reading multiple foreign languages at the same time..Version: 2.4.1

New version crashes at launchOn iPad Air. Can't evaluate it. There goes one of my favourite apps. Pity.Version: 2.5

👍Really I like it, specially when I'm looking for phrasal verbs...Version: 2.6

Ultralingua DictionariesFor a number of years I have used the Collins Pro Español–Inglés by Ultralingua as well as the Gran Diccionario Vox de la Lengua Español. Just recently I purchased the Ultralingua Collins Italian-English. The first two dictionaries are excellent and the latter is also good and has a surprisingly complete vocabulary. Naturally, as with all Ultralingua products the software is excellent. Perhaps most importantly, the Ultralingua customer support is unsurpassed. All three products are well worth the money..Version: 2.5

Ultralingua Collins dictionariesI've used these dictionaries for a few years and they are the best value for money. I look forward to the day when the Indonesian - English dictionary by Echols and Shadily is available. It will save me carrying two heavy books...Version: 2.4.1

Very polished, pleasure to useVery nice usability improvements. Great layout and quick access to most used functions. It's nice to have multiple languages and thesaurus in a consolidated app. It's a pity the Apple doesn't provide app "upgrade" pricing mechanisms in the App Store, I've also purchased the French-English stand alone app in the past and would have appreciated it. (I really wish you would Apple, you're not doing us any favors for apps like these.) Thanks for the promo offer in lieu of an upgrade, which I learned about from the newsletter. In case you're reading this too late, their newsletter will let you know of future sales - download the basic app for free and subscribe from within it..Version: 2.0

Great appBut I would like to be able to hear pronunciations.Version: 2.3

Worth itSo expensive. But these are great dictionaries and so convenient. Full conjugations. Sample sentences. Highly recommended for serious language students..Version: 2.7

Optimize app please!Like many other users here, I’ve been using the app for quite some time. Great translations and easy to use but really needs to be updated to fit the iPhone X screen. Would have given 5 stars easy..Version: 2.7

Expensive but worth it for heavy usersI've tried several of the free/cheap offline French/English dictionaries but none of them worked well for me, especially when looking up irregular verbs. The Collins dictionary available in this app was pricey but miles better. I'd recommend spending the money if you plan to refer to it regularly..Version: 2.7

Good but needs multi-dictionary searchThis review is for both the app and two of the dictionaries (Apple won’t let me review the standalone dictionaries Ultralingua sells). The Ultralingua app itself is mostly great, in that you can have just one app for multiple dictionaries. However, unfortunately you can only search one dictionary at a time. If I’m looking for, say, an EN-ES translation of a word, I want to be able to search all my EN-ES dictionaries, not just one. It seems a single-app approach should allow this. As for content, well, I’ve learned that more words in a dictionary isn’t necessarily better. For my EN-ES example, the main one with 75k words isn’t better/worse than the Collins 55k one. The 75k one has more technical words (e.g., isotherm). But when I asked my Mexican wife to throw a test word at me (jamaica), the Collins dictionary had it (hibiscus), whereas the bigger 75k one didn’t. This is exactly why it would be great if you could search words across multiple installed dictionaries, or at least switch easily between different dictionaries for the same search term..Version: 2.10

A very useful tool!I have used this dictionary (and its predecessor from the days of palm pilots) and find this version exceptionally useful to work with in searching for the right word, correct translation, proper conjugation. It is one of the pricier apps - but it provides excellent value for the money you spend. And it is convenient to use the same platform for other languages- so I keep my French and Portuguese dictionaries conveniently linked..Version: 2.7

BrilliantVery useful and with the ability to conjugate verbs and store favourites...excellent app, always have it with me..Version: 2.7

I think the app for English-German is brilliant! But is stupid that I cannot share the $20 dictionary with my iPad without buying the app again. The price is insane. Compared with competing products it seems ridiculous. However, if one is serious about learning a language, it is a worthwhile investment..Version: 2.1

Indispensable app; needs iPhone X optimizationThis app is great in terms of content. I’ve purchased the French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish dictionaries. However, the app could use a UX refresh. It’s cumbersome to get into and out of conjugations, the UI is a little dated, and the app has yet to be optimized for the iPhone X..Version: 2.7

Great range of dictionaries and fabulous customer serviceI was unable to install my previously downloaded dictionaries on my new iPad so I contacted Ultralingua and they sent me download codes for the relevant dictionaries. Thanks!.Version: 2.5

UltralinguaAvant la dernière mise à jour, on pouvait copier et coller du texte dans le dictionnaire. Maintenant, ce n'est plus possible. C'était bien pratique pour prendre des notes..Version: 2.3

Important and a must haveThis is very important to have to learn study 📚 more words I bought this so I can learn and expand my vocabulary in Italian 🇮🇹 language since I’m studying 📖 Italian 🇮🇹 in the Rosseta stone app and because you need to learn way more words like tou know you native language 💕 💗 💜💜💙💛💛💚 this app I bought the full version to unlock all the words in Italian.Version: 2.9

Great update - with one caveatThis app is a great update. I use the French-English dictionary on it, which is more concise than the Collins French-English dictionary that can also be loaded on the same up (I use Ultralingua's Collins French-English app separately, but it is available in this application as well). One issue I had was on my iPad. When I loaded both the French-English and the Collin's French-English dictionaries, the French-English version was basically inoperable. It seemed to suffer from incredible performance problems (i.e., 30-90 seconds to respond to any keystrokes). This isn't an issue on my iPhone 4, just on my 1st generation iPad. Anyway, the fix for me was to delete the app and redownload it from the app store. Then, I only installed the French-ENglish dictionary. Now it works great. (Again, for me, this works because I have the Collins French-English dictionary as a separate app. And, yes, I have two because often one of the definitions is better/more appropriate than the other and the Collins has examples.).Version: 2.3

The betIs te best app in the app store....Version: 2.7

Great appI've been using Ultralingua dictionaries for a long time now. The bookshelf idea always seemed a sound one enabling quick switching between a monolingual Spanish dictionary and a couple of English-Spanish ones. The interface is way to use, so handy having conjugations a swipe away. I also use the Ultralingua Version on my Apple computer.Version: 2.7

Complete app for most languagesThis collins app gave the good idea to collect all their most favorite and compete dictionaries in one app. Regularly update of this app is one the most advantage of this app.Version: 2.7

Great! It’s very helpful. I find all words, and I love the verbs very detailed!.Version: 2.9

Easy to use and comprehensiveGreat app that works well offline when you are out and about. This will be a resource I will use for many years. In future it would be even better if more assistance with pronunciation could be built in, especially with conjugations of verbs for ils/elles!.Version: 2.3

Great dictionary, offline use, YAY iPhone X supportThe title sums it up. I’ve used Ultralingua for years now, going back to 2010 or earlier. It’s a fantastic dictionary with conjugations, idioms, and slang (though no dictionary could ever contain all slang). I love that it works offline. And, I appreciate that this app can store multiple languages so I don’t have to open a new app. As a language teacher, this was the dictionary I’d recommend to students because it uses no data and is fast (the reference website we all know and love is great but fails in those two areas). Update: 5 stars! The only thing missing was iPhone X support and now it’s full screen!.Version: 2.8

ExcellentLove the new look and functions. What would make it perfect is sound for each word..Version: 2.3

Ultra lingua bookshelfThe bookshelf option is really useful. I keep all of your dictionaries in one application. I am studying Spanish and am a volunteer translator. I specially like the verb conjugation features..Version: 2.7

MrGreat dictionary this - use it all the time. And fantastic customer service when I had a small problem (something that was the fault of my iTuens, not the app). Great!.Version: 2.5

Add Swedish languageIt's very good dictionary , I suggest to add Swedish language , I need it ..Version: 2.7

Useful!Actully i like it, it's very simple and easy to use..Version: 2.7

Recent Update is ExcellentThe latest updates to the app are brilliant. Now I have one app for all my language dictionaries, and I particularly enjoy a new feature where clicking on a word expands the definitions below it without loading a new page, even allowing you to view several definitions at once for words listed next to each other. It makes the whole experience much smoother..Version: 2.3

Works v well, once againThe dictionaries on this app will cost you money, but generally far less so than their physical equivalents out there. There's also the benefit that comes with storing multiple dictionaries on one device, offline. All in all, this is a good quality app that translates the helpfulness of a good bilingual dictionary into a compact form. It also actually works with iOS 8 now, thanks to the new update that comes after a long period of crashing on opening..Version: 2.5

SaleThe half price sale was enough for me to upgrade as I only had one dictionary. I wasn't going to pay full price for dictionaries I already paid full price for. I even added another. But for those with several apps, the upgrade price may be too high. I find this new version is better integrated—mainly words and verb conjugations. The app works better too. The display is too spread out. It looks nice but more could be put on a single screen. No hint that an item is expandable or maybe I just haven't figured it out yet. This refers to the iPhone version. Might look fine on the big iPad screen. I would like the French verbs identified as intransitive or transitive, and where applicable have the associated prepositions shown..Version: 2.0

The perfect dictionary application! The best dictionary app on the App Store. I've been using this app with the French<->English dictionary whilst living in France and I can strongly recommend this as an essential learning tool for all language students. The dictionaries are pricy, but the prices are certainly justified by the comprehensiveness of the content, and the attention to detail that has gone into designing the interface, which takes the needs of the user into account before anything else! Over the time I have been using this app, it has been constantly updated and improved, and it keeps getting better and better and faster and faster. A great investment you will use over and over again! Highly recommended!.Version: 2.4.1

Excellent for French -EnglishI’m using this app for French - English. I live in the US and it’s more than useful since years. I removed a start because the app is NOT taking the entire screen on iPhone X..Version: 2.7

Awesome Update! This app has really helped me learn French. I've been using it almost daily for a few years, and I love the new layout. Definitions, expressions and conjugations all in one place. Love the navigation and easy to read font. Thanks for the awesome update! Update: Gotta say again how incredible the update is. Way easier to navigate than before. Intuitive, smooth, and fast!.Version: 2.3

The best multilingual dictionaries on iOSI am bilingual in Spanish and use the app for work. I'm also a language hobbyist and love the ability to search all dictionaries at the same time to define unknown words and study their origins. I have tried many other English to foreign language apps and none compares to the completeness, ease of use and accuracy of Ultralingua. The monolingual Spanish and French dictionaries are also the best on iOS..Version: 2.6

The bestI use the Collin’s Italian - English dictionary all the time. It’s very smooth, has tonnes of example sentences and the verb conjugation is super convenient. I use it tens of times every day, and haven’t ever found an app anywhere near as good..Version: 2.4.1

Searches only exact spellingsI like the feature that accesses my other Intralingua Collins dictionaries to search for words, but it only finds exact matches. So, "disculpa" will come up but not "disculp" -- but how do you know to add the "a" to get a match?.Version: 2.8

ThesaurusBought the 2.99 app. It's a thesaurus for French or Eng, not a translator. Has verb conjugater. Prob. worth $2.99..Version: 2.7

Crashes on iPhone 6Agree with previous reviews, but it crashes when opening on iPhone 6..Version: 2.4.1
