Ultralingua for Negative User Reviews

AnnoyedAs much as I liked the product when the dictionaries were separated I find it very annoying that after spending $20 for each of six dictionaries I am now encouraged to spend $10 for each of six new dictionaries. I see no reason to do so any time soon even if the new product has many more features. This style of marketing does nothing for customer loyalty..Version: 2.0

App not opening on iOS 8 and iPhone 6I really like this app, and need it to lookup and learn new word in France when trying to communicate. It’s been great and I liked the last improvements to get the conjugation of verbs easily. However it’s not the cheapest on this medium and it would be nice to see it support the latest iOS and phones for release, or soon after. I’m missing this app!.Version: 2.4.1

UltralingusNow it's VERY slow to operate since the upgrade. Really frustrating, especially on my iPhone 4. Please do a bug fix!!!!!!!'mm.Version: 2.1

Disgraceful! You must be out of your minds. I've already invested £100 or so in your dictionaries and now you expect me to pay again to replace them with this 'upgrade'? I will be looking to replace Ultralingua instead, and will advise my friends to do the same. Shame on you! And if this is a new app, why does it not fill the screen of my iPad?.Version: 2.0

Fautes en françaisÀ la première lecture de cette application, on note deux fautes: 1. Bienvenu! Bienvenue s'écrit avec un e lorsqu'il s'agit d'une interjection. 2. Avez-vous déjà utiliser Ultralingua? Utilisé est ici un participe passé et non un verbe à l'infinitif. Je vais me passer de ce dictionnaire avec 2 fautes à la 1ère page. Comment y faire confiance?.Version: 2.0

Needs an updateThis app hasn’t been updated in two years and it shows. Every time I try to download language library updates it crashes. It seems Ultralingua doesn’t want to comply with Apple’s privacy transparency requirements because there is no other logical explanation for why they are not updating. DO NOT BUY THIS APP until they update..Version: 2.9

Poor integrationBought the French and Italian dictionaries prior to his one but none of my favorites came across so useless, had to delete this one. Don't bother.Version: 2.7

I don't think so...I have been an enthusiastic user of the Ultralingua Italian-English and German-English dictionaries for a few years now and have found them invaluable. I will continue using them for as long as they remain available which, given that I have paid over £30 for the pair of them, I expect to be for some considerable time. I shall not, however, be paying almost the same again for a product with minor improvements which should simply be offered as a free upgrade. Dictionaries, in common with most reference books, require only minute upgrades and no-one in their right mind would pay twice for a virtually unaltered product. It is staggering that you consider your customer base to be of such low intelligence that you believe they might fall for this rather crass and somewhat desperate money-making scam. Those who are serious enough about language learning to purchase a heftily-priced dictionary app in the first place, generally have a modicum of intelligence. We understand words like gullible, credulous and naïve and generally seek to avoid being made fools of. Very disappointing Ultralingua..Version: 2.0

UltralinguaOk but I've already paid a lot for the current version. I wouldn't pay this much for an upgrade. I'll keep what I have or shift to another alternative :(.Version: 2.0

What is thisNot clear if this is the new app or if the other ultralingua apps are still supported. What's the difference..Version: 2.2

Very poor value for existing customers£13.99 to replace the Ultralingua French-English app that I have already bought in its version 1 guise is too steep, despite the (minor cosmetic) improvements. Also, the multiple language support clutters up the intro screens for modest users. I wish the development effort had gone into enhancing the current offerings..Version: 2.0

Please updateIt just crashes on my mac please fix the bug.Version: 2.9

Very poorThis app itself is an abuse of existing customers. The English dictionary is very poor; for example, there is no entry for 'in' as a preposition. All in all, a disgrace..Version: 2.0

VERY POOR!I recently upgraded my phone and have lost my SPANISH/ENGLISH dictionary. It won't restore and the software people don't reply to my request..Version: 2.6

No upgradeI paid almost 20eur for my dictionary. Ultralingua want me to pay about 15eur more, to bring their wayward apps into line. No new dictionary, some improved functionality, but overall … just pay again for the same thing I already have. I don't think so..Version: 2.0

Discounted upgrade a step in the right direction but problems persistTook the plunge and paid £5.99 to upgrade with the French English dictionary, but many entries seem blank. For example, try to translate hen from English to French shows poule, poulard and cocotte, but the follow up words for hen house, hen pigeon and turkey hen offer no translation unlike the old Ultralingua product. Maybe that explains why I feel there is a lot of white space between entries. Also, black bar down the rhs of the screen isn't at all attractive - why isn't all the screen area used? Despite upgrading, I think I still prefer the layout of the old version... Hopefully issues are sorted soon....Version: 2.0

Purchased the Collins Italian-English dictionaryI’m a beginner Italian student and purchased the Collins Italian-English dictionary offered through this app because it seemed more informative than just using a translation app. I really like the full list of conjugations, etc. However, I’m surprised that in just a few paragraphs of simple reading there have already been a few words that I wasn’t able to find in this dictionary at all and a few more which I figured out the infinitive of but still did not find in the list of conjugations. Furthermore, the translation app does recognize and translate all of these words accurately so I’m further confused as to why they don’t appear in the dictionary....Version: 2.9

Old Version Excellent, New UselessI paid good money for the old version (Brit Flag), then more good money for the new. Latter was accessible with diff for a while, and actually very good. Now it is impossible to access, aleays treats me as if never purchased, and will not sync with other Apple devices. The new version was great in all respects, bu something screwed it up. Estoy triste!.Version: 2.2

Not as good as it could beSince the consolidation of all dictionaries into one file, it added one useless step to the consultation process. First, the user has to open the file, and then he has to open the selected dictionary, before being able to actually look for the required word. Instead of simplifying the process, the new consolidated dictionary made the consultation process longer. It is unfortunate!.Version: 2.1

Claims it consolidates all purchased dictionaries in one place -- it doesnt.Fix this..Version: 2.3

The Best Dictionary=========== UPDATE =========== After upgrading iOS from 8.3 to 9.1 this app crashed when launched. I contacted support and for the first time ever, they did not respond. After several days I contacted them again and they responded, telling me to uninstall and reinstall the app, which I did. This deleted all my purchased dictionaries. Their instructions stated that if this happened I could have the app reinstall all purchased dictionaries. This does not work. I contacted support again and again no response. I contacted them AGAIN and now nothing but silence. So I'm left with an app with none of the dictionaries I that I've paid for. From 5 stars to 1. =========== END OF UPDATE =========== This app is by far the best German/English and French/English dictionary I have ever used. It is comprehensive and gives plenty of examples of word usage. You can search for a conjugated verb or a verb in any tense and it will locate it, give you the definition and steer you to the infinitive. From there you can get all conjugated forms of the verb. I use this app every day, multiple times per day. It is the most used app on my iPhone and it is the only app about which I have no issues or complaints..Version: 2.6

No longer worksThis app no longer works on an up-to-date iPadPro..Version: 2.8

NO customer supportI'm having trouble opening the Bookshelf app, crashes every time I open it. I've asked Ultralingua twice to help, no response either time. I can't use any of the dictionaries at all. Prior to this problem, I really liked and used the app a lot. Be aware that their customer service is no support whatsoever. :( I have a new iPad Pro on iOS 10..Version: 2.7

Ultralingua, you are CRAZY for wasting resources developing this app.Seriously, what were you thinking? No one is going to pay again for such expensive products! I do however concede that for virginal iPad users who haven't yet purchased any dictionaries, this may be a fantastic app for them. Me? I'll be saving my money and going elsewhere... Can't believe the stupidity of whoever commissioned this app! DON'T BUY!!!.Version: 2.0

Stops audio playbackThis app stops audio playback as soon as you enter it. Very annoying..Version: 2.7

An insult to existing customers. This is terrible, no more major updates for older Ultralingua dictionaries and no option to move the dictionaries I have already purchased into this app. The reason given for them not doing this is that giving discount to some but not all users is against apple guidelines. It is even hinted at that these original apps could be removed from the app store in future, so if I ever lose my dictionaries I may not be able to download them again. Well, Ultralingua should make all these in-app dictionaries free for a short time then, so that regular users of their apps can add what they have already bought. Or can they not offer a redeem code to existing users for the iTunes store? There must be some solution, the current discount of 50% for each dictionary is poor in my opinion. I actually think I prefer the interface of the old apps too - they make use of the screen better. The brand new features aren't extremely major anyway. - font options (you have a choice of 5 fonts now - but still can't change the colours of the header words, which I would have liked in font options as I don't like the red font with some dictionaries, blue is easier to read.) You can also increase/decrease text size, but is this feature worth me paying more again to reload dictionaries I already have? This is a feature I have been wishing for, but I can't change the colour, it doesn't seem I can pinch to zoom, so it isn't even implemented to its best now anyway. If I was a new customer this would be great, but this should be an easy thing to update on the old apps. - Translated conjugations - this is gimmicky, you can get conjugations in the old apps and if you are learning a language you will know what to do with them without a translation. Some tenses are not always so easy to translate anyway. -Search improvements. Are these worth buying the dictionaries again for? Being able to search for "put down" instead off having to search for "put" and then scrolling to the examples? I don't think so. I'm sure it will save a second but it wouldn't be a feature I would notice much or pay extra for. So this is what we are having to pay extra for if we want continued support. I'm sure if you are a new buyer this app will be amazing - being able to have a single app for my dictionaries is something that would have been useful and by far the best, most useful new feature. If you are an existing customer like myself it doesn't seem there are enough new features to warrant paying out again. The poor thing is my old app still crashes sometimes despite it being up to date. Also, I would like more information on dictionary data, i.e. if any of these dictionaries have a print equivalent - some language courses recommend certain dictionaries and if you need an extensive, unabridged version which is huge to carry around in real life then it is hard to tell if you are buying this or a smaller one..Version: 2.0

English italian, English German, theseI am only disappointed that they are not off line.Version: 2.1

On and offWhen I first got this app it worked well. Now it doesn't work properly and when I do a search for a word it only searches for verbs and vice versa. I've tried reinstalling and reloading dictionaries but still same problems.Version: 2.7

ProblemI got some problem with the programm can you help me.Version: 2.1

Disingenuous statementsJust one month ago I paid almost £20 for a dictionary that I now discover has no future development path. The company says "we would like to offer discounts to existing users, but Apple won't let us". If Ultralingua are going to rip off loyal customers they should avoid making it worse by such statements. At the very least they could have offered an introductory period in which the app was heavily discounted to all buyers to allow the 500,000 existing users to upgrade. This would have made them some money and brand loyalty. Instead, all they have done is alienate their entire customer base..Version: 2.0

Almost thereGOOD ! Nice interface. brought back the copy and conjugate button on this version compare to stand alone dictionary. This version allow you to recuperate the dictionaries you bought previously. But for some reason i can't explain, all the dictionaries previously bought didn't show up in the bookshelf, even if i followed the instructions. And the fusion seems to the available only once… I would have gave 5, but i gave 3 for the recuperation problems, and not working with iOS8.Version: 2.4.1

Waiting for the punch line to this joke.So let me get this right. First you charge me nearly £20 for a dictionary, then you abandon it, rewrite a new one and try to sell it to me again. I want some of whatever you guys are smoking. This should be an upgrade. Existing users get it for free, new users buy it. Thats how it works. See you later Ultalingua. I'm seeking out one of your competitors..Version: 2.0

Very confusing as it says Try It for everythingI tried this app but it does not recognize that I have any Ultralingua apps when I do have some. It just says "Try It" for everything listed app. How can this be a desktop? This app is a selling tool! No one needs this to be installed because if you need anything offered in here, the Apple Store will offer it. I am removing this from all of my devices..Version: 2.4.1

Rip offSurely this should be an upgrade? It's not as if the original was cheap, or this offers anything substantially better (indeed there seems to be less detail, not more). Disappointed is an understatement..Version: 2.0

Crashes after latest iOS updateI'm having exactly the same problem. I can't use it all. It crashes without opening. I have an iPhone 5s. An urgent fix needed..Version: 2.4.1

I tried new design - no thanksBRING BACK OLD INTERFACE - as option perhaps. OR FIVE NE MY MONEY BACK!! The old design had its flaws (too thick, more taps necessary) but it was efficient. Now u have to scroll kilometres and miles of text to get to what I need and it's not good on eye too..Version: 2.3

Dreadful!Don't know where it came from! Updated my Collins - which disappeared and was replaced with this. Lost all my history of previous searches - invaluable. Dreadful font lacks sharpness and clarity. I want my Collins back!.Version: 2.3

TerribleI can no longer open the app, it just crashes. Please sort it. Supposedly updated for ios 8 and it still crashes..Version: 2.5

Rip offCan't migrate already purchased dictionaries.Version: 2.0

Does Not Support Family SharingIt says it does, but it does not!.Version: 2.9

Be careful!!!If you buy a dictionary on your iPhone it will not work with the Mac App... You'll have to pay twice... I think that shouldn't be. That's not right..Version: 2.7

CrashesJust updated to 2.5 but it simply crashes whenever I try to open it on my iPhone. Needs fixing quickly. Happily, it works just fine on the iPad..Version: 2.5

Crashes on iOS9Used to be a really useful app but now it crashes every time I try to open it..Version: 2.6

Best dictionary app?The most annoying thing about this dictionary is its font. It’s tough to read. The performance of the app is terrible it’s laggy on my iPhone 8 which is a pretty new phone. It lacks many features that other free dictionaries have, for example, ability to add notes. The dictionary is not complete it lacks many words. No voice pronunciation is available. The UI is cluttered....Version: 2.8

Constant crashesI used to use this app all the time, it was great. Now I tap on the icon and it crashes before opening properly. It has been like this since iOS7 came out. I'm in France and can't lool at the dictionary I have paid for! Frustrating. Please fix this..Version: 2.4.1

PoorNo real explanation about what you are getting - wanted a good French / English dictionary - they may be good at each - but to pay $20 for the translation is bad news.Version: 2.3

Now it crashesLatest iOS, will not open! Pathetic..Version: 2.4.1

PointlessIt's not bad but it's pointless. If you already have these dictionaries why do you need an app to consolidate them? It's a bit like smashing up the lifeboat to make a raft.....Version: 2.4

New version is not as usableFor example, previously it remembered the last tense for conjugation, which was very helpful for exercises. Also with the dictionary and conjugation "modes" it's harder to swap between definitions and conjugations.Version: 2.7

I will never buy from Ultralingua againIf I had known that they were going to end-of-life my two previous Ultralingua dictionary purchases to make me pay twice for the same content all over again with a new "version", I never would have bought from them in the first place. This is even worse than when record companies made you buy the same music twice when they switched from vinyl to CDs, because in this case the quality is hardly different and the only form factor change is an arbitrary version number they put on the dictionary browsing software. Ultralingua clearly has proven themselves untrustworthy, as how long can we expect the new dictionaries to be good for until they change the software and recharge you all over again? One year? Two? Never again will I buy from Ultralingua..Version: 2.0

Les dictonnaires Ultralingua: excellentsCependant, je n'ai pas trouvé d'avantage à utiliser l'étagère versus simplement créer un dossier "Dictionnaires" pour y ranger mes 3 dictionnaires Ultralingua, surtout que l'étagère n'accepte pas un des trois (Français-Anglais)..Version: 2.3

What is the point of this newsstand like app?It doesn't recognize all the ultra lingual dictionaries I have on my device.Version: 2.3

PointlessWhy would someone pay $10 or more extra for something they already have?? I've already paid $25 or so for one of these dictionaries and now they want me to buy it again for some minor usability improvements? This should be an update, not a completely new app. The developers should start to care more about their customers and less about their profits.Version: 2.0

Dud and NOT FreeThe material is good, but this app is NOT free! It is worthless without spending at least $A20 on each dictionary or variant. It's an attempt to sell again what we've already bought at a pretty high premium. There's no way I could justify this app because any advantage in usability is quite minimal. Greed seems to have trumped commercial common sense, especially for current users who'd be well advised to stay with their current solution or go with alternatives if it comes to it..Version: 2.0

Needs fixingI would have given this a 4 or 5 before the update. Now I has become painfully slow. I hope you can fix it..Version: 2.4

Leave itUnless you have a fascination for antiquity you should leave this app alone. The upgrade for this app leaves a terrible interface with awful font too large to navigate comfortably and too gaudy to enjoy. Pick Collins - it's more expensive but it's value for money.Version: 2.3

Fantastic but outdatedOne of my favorite dictionaries, but the app hasn’t been updated..Version: 2.9

Interesting idea, wrong audienceThe Ultralingua dictionaries are written for people who already have a good working knowledge of both languages. They are helpful when you need to find -- or better, be reminded of -- just the right word. They have lots of words with brief entries for each. For example, the Ultralingua Spanish-English dictionary has "over 75,000 entries with 290,000 translations." Their iTunes store page quotes a New York Times review as saying it is "for serious language students and translators who are looking for more precision." This audience already knows how to conjugate verbs, and may even be able to spell. The new version is better suited for beginners. For them it could be very helpful to be able to enter a conjugated irregular verb from something they are reading, and have the dictionary sort it out. This seems like a much better fit with the Collins family of dictionaries. Their Spanish-English dicionary has "over 55,000 entries with 100,000 translations" and many more examples of usage than does the Ultralingua dictionary..Version: 2.0.1

Agree with previousHaving already purchased the app, it seems exploitation to have to pay a further amount for what should be an update..Version: 2.0

Does mot work on iPhone 6Paid lots of money for it a while ago. Still waiting for iPhone 6 update. Current version does not run. Get your act together if you want to charge real money for an app!.Version: 2.4.1

Not user friendlyIt feels like I've wasted my money because this is so difficult to navigate around I tend to not use it. Would love to be able to enter a word and it goes to that word or the verb, but instead you have to work out which screen you need to be on, then which language you need to select before retyping the word after trying on the 'wrong' search bar!! Very frustrating..Version: 2.9

Not iOS 8 compatibleThis is a good app but it won't launch on iOS 8, I've been waiting for an update for a while now..Version: 2.4.1

Eh?I've been using one of your dictionaries for two years now, and, despite the high price, it always needed tidying up. I was forever finding words that went nowhere when you clicked on them, or errors in the layout of definitions. Today I find a link to a new-look dictionary, for which you're trying to charge me again. Is this to replace my existing dictionary? Are you not going to develop the original dictionary anymore? As for the new look, I just sampled the Spanish-English version, and unless I'm doing something very stupid, it barely seems to contain a fraction of the detail of the dictionary I've been using for the past two years. What's going on?.Version: 2.0

Solid dictionaryUpdate: this app no longer works on iOS 9 and iPhone 6 for me (instant return to springboard). Running the dictionary separately does though. ----- Good app that is very handy for my spanish lessons. It could do with some more idioms but overall I’m very satisfied. I’d be lost without it. The only feature that I think would be good would be Siri integration..Version: 2.6

CrashingHello Since I updated my iPhone is to 9.2 I can't get the app to open.Version: 2.7

Great app, but... crashes on open on iOS 10I can't open this app since installing iOS 10. It immediately crashes. However I used to love this app and used it a lot for both Spanish and Italian. Please update for iOS 10 (iPhone 6s+)..Version: 2.7

A step backwardsI've has this iteration since available and it is clumsier and even seems to have fewer words, which I find hard to believe..Version: 2.3

Was great, but now won't start!Crashes on opening, desperately annoying as I have bought two dictionaries and can't use either. It was the best dictionary I have used! Please fix!.Version: 2.4.1

Won't open on iPhone 6Crashes and won't open.Version: 2.4.1

ExtortionateI know that the old dictionaries are not being abandoned but bringing new features only to a new app where I have to pay again for my already purchased dictionaries is really extortionate and greedy. I already found the separate apps very expensive concerning the fact that a lot of vocabulary is missing. I often have to use other apps or online dictionaries to find a word I'm looking for and now I am to pay even more if want to have cool new features and a new layout? Making the dictionaries free for customers who already bought them as a full price app would be your only way out of this. Just look at the other reviews....Version: 2.0

RichI'll be honest, great app & features but you're asking way too much. Regardless of the features you offer, we can get dictionaries for much less. MUCH less..Version: 2.0

Love the app, don’t love keeping twoI originally installed the bookshelf from a recommendation from a single language Ultralingua dictionary with the promise that I could use it and dictionaries for other languages in one app. The problem is that the bookshelf has never pulled in the purchase of the single language dictionary as promised. The developers used to send one off codes so I could pull in the single language dictionary every time a change was made to the bookshelf and I lost access to that language, but a few years ago they stopped responding. Now I have the bookshelf app with five dictionaries and a single language app installed. Its less useful to me to have to search the single language app separately, and it bugs me to have to keep two apps installed. The problem has also dissuaded me from purchasing other dictionaries in the bookshelf app. I would have thought they’d have fixed this bug by now, but apparently this “feature”, which is still advertised within both apps, is not seriously supported..Version: 2.8

BetterWell, you finally did the right thing. Stopped blaming Apple. Stopped claiming it was not possible (^^) and gave a migration path for previously purchased dictionaries. It is a pity it took the internet equivalent of a mob with flaming torches and pitch-forks to push you to do it! As a result you have lost a good deal of trust, and made a lot of your formerly loyal customers very angry. I sincerely hope you have learned from this experience. You will have to earn back the trust of your customers - and that will not be easy..Version: 2.4.1

Why pay more for a less useful dictionary??Since the "upgrade" is much slower, (painfully slow) and less comprehensive.. whenever i have internet connection I use Leo, which is a free app!!.Version: 2.1

Existing customers need not applyI'm sure this is a fine application - indeed, the quick play I had with he sample sections suggests that it is attractive, fast and useful: if you do not already own any ultralingua dictionaries, then I am sure it represents good value. But expecting people who have already purchased previous versions of the ultralingua dictionaries to pay full price to purchase them again just isn't a starter, I'm afraid - there simply isn't enough value here to justify that. These dictionaries are not throwaway 99c apps - each one represents significant expenditure. So, the conclusion? If you don't own ultralingua dictionaries already, then try this out for sure. But if you do, forget it. Your prior business evidently means nothing to these people..Version: 2.0

Love it! If i can use it…I love this app and i love the consolidation of the dictionaries, since i live/work in 3-4 languages. BUT since the last ios update, it CRASHES on start up. When are you going to fix it?? It's been months!.Version: 2.4.1
