IFretless Bass for Positive User Reviews

Great Instrument, Killer MIDI Controller!A killer apps for beginner and pro musicians alike! (This review was original written for iFretless Guitar but the Bass and Sax versions are very similar with some instrument specific enhancement so I will just use this in all three reviews.) The iFrelless Guitar is truly an amazing app, one of my top 10 most used music apps on my iOS devices, and I have hundreds of them!! I think the app would be great for: Budding musicians who wants to start sounding good from the start go and meanwhile learning and exploring the Guitar fretboard layout and how it relates to the piano keyboard. It is also great for learning and practising the different scale, modal and chord shapes for the guitar. (Been trying to convince the developer into adding a scale overlay to aid learning...would be even more awesome as a learning tool then. :)) Guitarists(and Bassists) who wants to have a realistic and great sounding onboard guitar instrument on their iOS, as well as a familiar fretboard interface to play and control other music apps like BS16-i, Sampletank, and hundreds of other synthesiser apps with. Keybaord players who wants to add good guitar sounds to their arsenal, while being able to finely control all their sounds with the best pitch bending and velocity sensing(plus a CC touch controller pad) on the iOS. The onboard guitar instruments sound great(you can have three guitars playing together), and while the onboard effects are quite good, you can even use Audiobus to output the sounds to effect apps like JamUp, Amplitube...etc to create your very own custom sounds. The developer has painstakingly layered and programmed the sound samples so that the instruments sound really responsive and realistic. Hands down the best sounding guitar soloing app on the iOS. (though it lets you play power chords concurrently as well!) Where it really shines for me though is it's playing surface. No distraction with buttons and the likes. Pitch bending is absolutely awesome and definitely (the best)one of it's kind. Period. The control feels natural and intuitive and once you have learnt the basic scale pattern you can play in all keys easily(unlike the piano keyboard) and there are different tuning options to pick from. An optional touchpad can be activated to control any CC's you want(e.g.: timbre, filters, volume...etc). Velocity sensitivity is the best I have seen on any iOS app and while this still has some room to improve, this is more a limitation on the iOS and the developer is ready to pounce on any new technological possibilities to improve the app as soon as they become available. With coreMIDI, you can use iFretless to control and play the hundreds of other music apps. One fun thing I have recently done is to use iFretless to control a good GM Soundfont hosted in BS16-i and viola, not only instantly I have 128 new instruments to play from, I also have a 81 key drum pad that is velocity sensitive, bendable and CC controllable! It works really well with Sampletank too having hundreds of acoustic, orchestral and synthesized sounds. Great as it is as an instrument, I find the iFretless series has helped me greatly with my learning BOTH the guitar and the keyboard as well. With the colours of the strings denoting the black and white piano keys it allows me to explore the different scales and modes and translate what I know from the Guitar to the Keyboard and vice versa. You can also turn on the Key Labels so you know what you are playing if you get lost(which can happen as you are playing a 9 x 9 fretboard! A scale and mode overlay would be very helpful in this aspect and I have been emailing the developer Hans Anderson who is very helpful and responsive and he said that he was trying to get musicians to get away from the "scale" mindset and explore the other new sound territories and hence he had decided to leave that out for now but would keep his mind open about adding it later. While this is very true as I have found myself playing in surprising new ways, I think it is still good to have the option and allows a smooth and easier entry for new users. After all, it would be best to first learn the rules, THEN learn how to break them. :) Other potential areas to improve would be easier assess to the option screen and it's interface, a "Polyphonic" mode to allow multiple notes to be played on the same string, more customizable note range(0-127), allowing other chord types to be played easily, having different MIDI channels for the chord output from the main, and a scale overlay with large number so scale and mode types for easier learning. These are by no mean the apps' shortcoming but rather just represent my wish list. :)) When I first got the app, I was hoping that iFretless would behave like my real guitar, but now I am almost wishing that my guitar would start to behave more like iFretless! My hat off to Hans Anderson and his team for creating such an expressive and playable instrument. Clearly he cares a lot for his apps and would be committed to continue improving it. :) Get the app, explore it a bit, learn the basic scale patterns(start from C-easy with the string colour), and you will be absolutely amazed at how realistic and expressive a Pro level music app can sound!.Version: 2.10.1

Tremendous as a MPE midi controller…!…for both iOS and MacOS apps and software. I use it to control orange tree samples virtual guitars. It allows me to play those guitars with many types of articulations, especially hammer ons, independent slides and bends per string, harmonics, and more! It’s like having a linnstrument!.Version: 1.4.29

ExcellentFun app. Perform bass-lines you never knew you had in you! It doesn't take long to be playing a great sounding pattern with this app. Put it through some processing and you are away. Heartily recommended!.Version: 4.4.7

Great app, could be awesome!I recently broke my left arm skiing, and was desperately searching for an app that would allow us to not cancel our upcoming gigs. I tried several and had just about given up when I discovered ifretless! The sound is awesome, and the latency non existent to my ear. The things holding it back for me, are that I can save presets, but they don't show up to be selected later, so I have to configure everything every time I start the app. Secondly, why not let me go down to 4 or 5 strings like the actual instrument? The option for another fret or two would be nice as well. Keep up the good work, and thanks for listening..Version: 3.6.2

With Audiobus support this is brilliant for GaragebandFantastic sounds and great interface for quickly playing bass riffs. Only missing thing is harmonics, but otherwise very articulate..Version: 2.5

Bought bundleAll the iFretless sounds and interfaces are fantastic. Guitar could use an update, actually it would be very helpful if all 4 had the same Settings format. Love the string interface and sounds. Velocity is truly remarkable! Well worth the 30$..Version: 1.4.25

Unbelievably realisticThe touch controls make the app incredibly easy to get into if you know how to play bass/guitar. It also allows for a very natural sound unlike using a keyboard as slides/vibrato/hammer-ons etc are easy to do and sound great. Also has plenty of controls to adjust the tone. One of the essential apps if you need a realistic and playable bass to use with Audiobus. Sounds stunning!.Version: 2.3

Unusually playable instrument. Sets the gold standard.I play the Bass in live performances using Bluetooth MIDI (puc+) and my EWI 5000 wirelessly. The expressiveness and sound quality rivals many desktop instruments, and this is a truly fun and capable instrument. The development team is also quick to address issues and customer support is highly responsive. Love. This. App..Version: 4.4.9

IfretlessFun!.Version: 1.0

ExcellentThe very first music app I've bought that actually feels like an instrument. A lot of thought went into making this responsive and playable. This app has replaced my midi guitar and is just wonderful to play. Works over midi and inter app to GarageBand on a 1st generation iPad Mini with no problems. If this was a hardware solution I'd happily pay several hundred for it. Brilliant work developers. Thank you..Version: 3.2

Awesome!Great sounds, very realistic. I am also a real bassist and let me tell you, with apps like this the sky is the limit. I also purchased iFretless Sax by the same people, and that is awesome too! These apps are serious tools, not toys. Thanks for the inspiration guy. Shalom to all. Nebben.Version: 2.9

Long time favoriteJust a great sounding bass app, or a “fretted” midi controller app for those more familiar with fretboards than keyboards. So fun to play I rarely get out my real bass guitar anymore..Version: 1.4.27

A thing of beauty :)I'm not a bad bass player and can sound quite good if I work at it, but on this I sound like a world class virtuoso! Highly responsive and realistic sounds coupled with a string layout I can only wish my bass had. One major thing is missing at present, Audiobus. I want to record my awesomeness. :).Version: 2.0.2

StellarIf you want great fretless bass with a superior touch surface that plays other apps flawlessly via virtual MIDI you won't be disappointed here!.Version: 3.6.2.3

THE Bass AppAbsolutel genius UI and fantastic real Bass sounds... incredibly powerful for multitudes of instuments if teamed with an app like Sampletank... if you write/record music that needs feel and expression or true bass sounds it is a must have..Version: 2.1

Great sound and playabilityI'm a keyboard player rather than a bass player but this is the first app I go to once I've got a drum track down. It sounds great and I end up playing differently than I would triggering it through a midi keyboard (which I can still do if I need to). Fantastic as a midi controller too. The IAPs are cheap and worth it..Version: 2.5

Tuning issue (update)Totally awesome! Thank you so very much for being punctual & addressing this as thoroughly as you have!!!! It is rare to find a really good app, and even more rarer to find an app designer who will fix their app as quickly as you folks have! As of today, 12/26/18, the tuning is still out of whack. If you use the default settings, you can hear it. Some notes are right on (some G notes) & others are a 1/2 chromatic step down. This app is so very beautiful & the sound quality is great! Fix this for us as soon as possible please!!! Bravo guys!!! Perfecto!!!.Version: 4.4.12

Good appVery good fretless bass sound and great midi control in audio bus....I purchased this app from my iPad and didn't see any of the in app top up purchases...I felt like my pocket had been picked, excuse the pun...Other than that this is a very good must have app...Version: 2.3

Nice but,,,A truly great instrument which sounds extremely authentic and is fun to play. My only criticism is this. Why that annoying string buzz on bottom E. Yes I’m sure it’s for authenticity but it’s unnecessary. I particularly like the hard finger fret style but it’s ruined by this. Turn down the velocity control I hear you say,,,but then the hard style is lost. Please remove it in an update or is there a secret trick ? I want to give 5 stars but the buzz is giving me Tinnitus..Version: 1.4.29

Best bass guitar sim out thereI have been playing with this app for a short while now and I am blown away by the ease of use and realism of the sounds created. I have played electric bass for around 30 years now and I am amazed how easily I was able to play grooves with this app straight from the box. Well worth the asking price and I look forward to seeing this app develop with time. Love it!.Version: 2.2

Latest release - No soundNo sound generating from app on iPhone 6s plus ios 11. Anyone else have this issue?.Version: 4.0

NiooceThis new update is the dogs for all you AUM Rozeta freaks out there..Version: 4.1

4 for conceptA fully working version will be great. I've used garage band, mugician, geo and cantor and like what you're adding but with an iPad 2 and iOS 5, there seems to b an issue. I've only been using it for midi control which is fine for network but seems flawed for virtual midi which seems great and responsive at first but after ten or so notes the latency seems to grow and never come back down to earth. It's as if each new note exponentially increases the delay..Version: 2.0.1

So natural soundingRecording sampled bass has never felt or sounded better. If you've ever recorded repeated 1/8th notes on a keyboard bass patch you know how unnatural it sounds. As an ex bass of 15 years this would really irritate me. But playing two fingers on iFretless's bass string produce some very authentic bass lines. The new support for Audiobus is a great feature for my iOS recording environment. There are several preferences you'll have to tweak inside the app to match your playing style. You can even send out midi to control sounds on other apps that support virtual midi and maintain iFretless's expressiveness..Version: 2.2

Lots of FunLots of fun to play with. For "fret oriented musicians", it's the next best thing to having a physical instrument. With midi, the sounds are unlimited. I'm using it with Sampletank right now. Wish List: For guitar players, an option to set the 3rd string to a 3rd and leave the rest as 4ths. For power users, an option to assign each string to consecutive midi channels, starting with channel 1 at the top. Combine that with ios apps like Midibridge or various PC/Mac apps and you'd have a huge range of performance options and tweakability..Version: 2.4

Excellent bass sounds and nice interfaceThis may become my favorite bass app on iOS. There are lots of ways to generate synth and fret instrument bass sounds on iOS, including synths, samples, and SoundFonts. But iFretless Bass is a great pick-up-and-go package that has real life quality and touch responsiveness. It's AB and IAA compatible, too. The strings can be laid out in various intervals and there are about 10 instruments, including some decent synth sounds. While I found the string interface easy enough to play, it should be noted that the app works as both a MIDI controller for other apps, AND you can use other Virtual MIDI apps to control it. So if you have a good MIDI sequencer (I recommend Xynthesizer or Analog MIDISequencer, but there are many), you can generate perfectly timed rhythms that are precise even beyond what a human could actually play. This is particularly great if you just want the bass part as part of a backing track for other instruments to layer on top of, such as a synth or guitar. The EQ controls actually give a decent variety of sound control under the hood, but I think the variety of instruments here is pretty good to start with. Rock/guitar musicians often feel a little neglected by the bass and drum options on iOS, which tend to be EDM-oriented, but not so with iFretless Bass. While the app did seem to run well enough on my iPad2, there was some occasional clicking during faster passages that is a bit of an annoyance. I believe the developer has a YouTube video about how to reduce/circumvent this, but this is a minor occurrence that should not discourage you from checking out the app. Highly recommend..Version: 2.10.1

IncredibleThis sound very good and that can't be said about to many bass apps I've purchased. Very pleased with this app great job dev hope the latency get a little better other than that it perfect..Version: 1.2

Amazing New UpdateI didn’t think you could get any better. With this new update it sounds scary natural! I’m definitely an acoustic kind of musician and without having to spend a lot of money on bass I just use this app to do my recordings. I graduated from the Institute of Audio Research and a pretty talented singer songwriter/musician so I’m pretty picky about my sounds, that said, I have no complaints no I change anything about this app. Seriously, it’s awesome. -Matt.Version: 4.1.1

This app is amazing by farDefinitely worth the money very incredible every producer who wants to create live bass sounds should have this thing. The audio unit capabilities in the visual display inside of other applications for music make this Audio unit one of the best. I enjoy playing it every day or every chance I get it simply magical. Thank you for your hard work you deserve five stars.Version: 4.2

Like itIt's my kind of app. Simple and workable..Version: 1.0

Took me a long time to get around to buying this......but man am I glad I finally got it. I have had hundreds of bass sounds for many years, but this app really ads a lot. Great sounds, great playability. What else is there? This is definitely the stuff..Version: 3.5

Good sounds and very playable, but...A definite instrument in its own right. Ifretless bass can be played expressively - the nearest thing to an actual bass guitar on the ipad (or iPhone - it even works well on the small screen of my 4s). The sounds are good too, consistently so across the octaves. My only issue with ifretless bass though (hence 4 rather than 5 stars) is it doesn't allow driving bass lines to be played. Even triggering the same fret twice with different fingers, or the same note on different frets with different fingers in quick succession does not get the required sound; it is just too staccato. So a suggestion: a a selectable sustain function which keeps a note playing (with its natural ADSR) until another note on the same string is played..Version: 2.10.1

BassicallyThis is an app created by someone who really plays the bass and knows that it can be a lot more expressive than a synth. 5 stars, bass-ically one for each string..Version: 2.5

Now has playing surface in AU!Having the playing surface in the AU has now made this a five star app. Hope the others join it!.Version: 4.2

Very good, can be better.I am handicapped and this allows me to be a bassist again. Except for the Upright Bass, the sounds are very good—certainly enough for gigging which I do. The upright bass is horrible and useless. Oh well, you can’t have everything. I found a bug that will not bother must users. When you quit iFretless Bass, it doesn’t quit completely. If you only tap the screen, you won’t notice it but, if your keyboard is connected to your iOS device, any other sound library will be odd because your keyboard will still trigger iFretless Bass (your keys just have to be hooked up. It still happens if you tapped the glass on the bass). Drove me nuts till I figured it out. The workaround is easy enough—shut down your iOS device and restart. Time consuming and annoying at a gig. I didn’t notice this bug with the iFretless brass and wind libraries. Except for that and the upright bass, sounds great and works fine..Version: 3.6.6

Great App, one issueLove the sounds! The upright could use some love, but the others are sweet. One issue... the tuning on what would be the A string is tuned a half-step low (Ab). This changes depending on how many strings you have setup. When I put 10 on the screen, the 4th string is tuned a half-step low. Other than that, awesome..Version: 4.4.9

What an awesome app! This app is so fun to play with and the visual waveform is a great bonus. I recommend!.Version: 2.0.1

Is this some kind of joke? It’s a bass app, but the strings are obviously the wrong tones and labels. Standard bass tuning is E A D G lowest string to highest. That is not what this app shows, the app is DGCF. I choose 4 Strings, and I’ve searched the options. There is no setting for what note the lowest string is. I paid money for this app and the most basic fundamental thing is wrong. UPDATE: I found that if I open the options menu, I can then SCROLL the display of strings, and make it E A D G. There is no indication that you can do that, but magically, surprise, the interface becomes scrollable when you open Options. The option menu didn’t contain anything about that. Anyway, I wish there were other display options for the way the fretboard looks..Version: 1.4.25

Thank you for the Audiobus update!Last week, the AB control panel wasn't working as expected on iPhone or iPad. So, I emailed their support team (probably the dev), and this update was released straight away! iFretless Bass is a wonderful and intuitive app! It sounds great and is a must-have for your musical arsenal!.Version: 3.3

The ideal electric/synth bass instrument for iOSI have been putting together a mobile demo-recording setup around the iPad and iPhone, and I wanted a realistic-sounding and usable bass-instrument app, for laying down bass parts on song demos when I don't have a bass guitar to hand. In short: iFretless Bass is ideal for this purpose. It sounds great (try routing it through Audiobus and a bass-amp in BIAS, for extra realism), and the touchscreen "strings" make for an intuitive interface for guitarists. iFB is a useful MIDI controller too, and I also play its sounds from my electric guitar via a Sonuus i2M guitar-MIDI converter. So: looking for a great-sounding and useful bass instrument for iOS? Look no further :-).Version: 3.0

Absolutely Amazing!Fantastic! Thank you!.Version: 4.0

GreatAs a bass player it's very useful... I use it as a MIDI controller for just about everything.Version: 3.0

Lower notes pleaseI love the app. I use it with my midi keyboard controller. I wish it can get the low Bb note like bass players who turn their instruments down 1/2 step on their 5 string basses.Version: 1.4.29

Good sounds but...Sounds are really good ,but the "click " keyboard sounds are too loud, what could I do too reduce "click" keyboard sounds?.Version: 3.6.2.2

Very cool app design wellGreat sound and layout is easy to understand. Cool bass app....Version: 1.0

If you play Bass, BUY THIS APP!!!Great app! Definitely makes me want a 9 string bass! If only I could afford one in real life....Version: 1.0

Pretty realisticConvenient way to lay down quick, nice sounding bass lines. You won't be disappointed..Version: 3.6.1

Excellent instrument! As a guitarist this feels right, plays well and sounds fantastic! The tutorial videos and help section are very good as is the loop recorder. This will be a 5-star app for me when inter-app audio is added, allowing me to record directly into my Auria DAW whilst hearing existing tracks - at which point I'll probably buy the sax app too! Recommended..Version: 2.9.2

A Real FindI have loads of Ipad music apps. This is an outstanding bass. Anyone is the price of admission. Mortgage the house. Sell the cat. Your life will change. well... maybe not, but this bass is a must for jazz, funk, pop, electro, and all derivative genres..Version: 3.1

Great appReally is a good bass app. However, as a midi controller it is even better! Shame there is no internal way of recording the noise you make, but hey we can only pray that Audiobus solves that problem. As it stands it is a midi interface that I understand coming from a guitar background a lot more easily than your standard keyboard style interface. Recommended..Version: 1.3

Simply AmazingThis has replaced my bass guitar when recording..Version: 4.1

Nice Instrument would love to see it deepened, thoughI really dig this bass library. I was in search something similar to my COPIOUS bass VSTs in a convenient app and this had the best reviews. Although not NEARLY as deeply sampled or scripted as a bass library for Kontakt or Ample Sound, these samples are great and retain most of the authentic bass aura that you don’t get with many keyboard bass patches. I won’t gripe about adding scripting to simulate the ranges and register of a real bass, as I know that this requires lots of time and investment & is a bit much to expect from a $15 app. But, I will suggest an update adding adjustable layers for all of the resonant, release, & fret noise idiosyncrasies of a bass to make the sound less sterile, adding ‘string tap’ & atonal mute samples assignable to a single key, MIDI CC, & velocity layer as an option for rhythmic players, optionally integrating the “hard finger” samples with their buzzing into the regular bass libraries to generate even more tonal variation on each string (round robin would be nice, but I understand limitations), include a few assignable effects (up and down slides, slap fox, etc.) that can also be triggered from the touchscreen & assigned to aftertouch for those of use without a feature rich midi controller, and, lastly, add ‘slap’ & mute as tab options for all electric basses; offering the ability to include them as a top or bottom velocity layers. I’d gladly shell out more cash to purchase these updates, as I really have no other alternatives other than bringing my MUSE Receptor with Kontakt out of retirement or settling for my Tyros 5’s bland bass patches. Thanks for this great app!.Version: 1.4.29

Like it!Great MIDI controller with effective virtual MIDI routing. I would like two things: 1) Ability to enable note-off messages too. It seems that some notes stick in BM2, but that could be BM2. 2) A vertical slider on the left with assignable cc message numbers so those who are using synths can control one parameter in addition to volume and pitch bend. Even being able to send a modulation controller message would be helpful. Also, when closing background MIDI apps, the app starts making really loud crackling sounds until network midi is re-enabled or closed and reopened. Thanks for a great app!.Version: 1.2

5 Stars of course !Props to the developers for fixing the preset change issue,(amongst other things). All is well with this app! Plays nice! -Sounds nice!.. It’s nice! These guys are 4real into iOS, showing great possibilities, and, abilities of the platform! Keep em coming.. (FYI, Keep your eyes on them for ‘August 2019’), and beyond.. Bless up! King.Version: 1.4.21

THE BEST BASS APP thanks againHello iFretless Just want to say thanks again for the best bass app in the App Store if your a musician who records on the iPad you will not find a better sounding bass app. Please everyone buy this to support the development of it.Version: 4.4.12

Love the new XY padsWith this latest update and the new XY pads, this becomes one of the funnest and most useful midi controllers that I own. I'm especially liking how solid virtual midi works now :).Version: 2.0

Issue resolvedThanks for resolving the issue. It’s working fine now.Version: 4.4.3

Great natural sounding bass!More convenient than grabbing a real bass and sounds as good! Game changer for mobile music making..Version: 1.4.29
