LiveBPM - Beat Detector for Positive User Reviews

Fantastic for drummersI play drums in a band and use this all the time. We don’t play to a click (amateurs!) and this has been invaluable in helping us keep at around the right tempo. Live music does naturally move around in time and this keeps a check on how much. I’m amazed at how well it picks up the beat and how quickly. It even works when there are no drums or other percussion for example when a guitarist is playing an intro, somehow it picks up the tempo! I also love the graph which I use to show to band mates at rehearsal how the last song went and how much they sped up! It’s great as it is and my only suggestions for development would be: - Intelligent auto setting of the tempo range. If your song tempo is at the end of a range then you can sometimes get a halving or doubling of the tempo as you go out of the set range. Not a problem really and only occurs if you go straight from a slow song to a fast one and don’t have time to alter the range setting - This is going away from the app’s prime function but the ability to set a series of count off tempos (like a set list in a metronome app) which are displayed using a swinging line (I really don’t like flashing dots or bars on metronomes) would be great BUT only as long as it didn’t impact on its main job of showing the current tempo. In short, I think this app is absolutely first class. Does exactly what it needs to do, no fuss, no fancy graphics, no drop outs. I can’t imagine being without it at any gig. Recommended for any drummer or other live musician who doesn’t use a click..Version: 1.2.1

Drummers need this. The app can be a bit wonky with odd time signatures, but it otherwise does a fairly amazing job without the need for extra trigger hardware. I have used it to learn how my emotions impact my tendencies to speed up or slow down. I also use it to show bandmates where their perception of time is off (“No, in fact we did not speed up. We were +/- 1 bpm the entire time. Have a look at the data.”).Version: 1.2.1

Works as describedGreat drumming companion. Thanks.Version: 1.2.0

BpmVery accurate when finding out bpm for records.Version: 1.2.0

Beat Live BPM DetectorWorks again! Accurately detects bpm every time. I am a professional DJ and have been using this app for years. Perfect for auditioning tracks and getting quick accurate bpm. Great for live shows. Detect bpm of dj on before you! A quick note. App stopped working with IOS 14 update so I deleted. Tried other apps that all sucked so I installed this one again, authorized app to use microphone and it’s working again!!!! So happy. Hope this helps someone else:).Version: 1.2.1

Update needed for iPhone XI’ve been using this app for some time now and absolutely love it. However since upgrading my phone recently to an iPhone X I’ve been experiencing an issue with the app not closing when I’ve finished using it, leaving me having to switch my phone off as my only option to get out of it. Please can you put out a bug fix to address this problem as I really don’t want to have to stop using it. This is the only reason I’ve not given it 5 stars as otherwise it’s superb. Thanks!.Version: 1.2.1

Can't live without it!I've been using Live BPM for over a year now and can't live without it. Do yourself a favor and download it now..Version: 1.2.1

Does what it says on the tinThis does one job, without adding unnecessary bells and whistles. So far, it's really accurate and a useful tool. Nic.Version: 1.2.0

Love this AppDrummer here... This is a great $4 “insurance policy” for tempo. The big display (I use an iPad) allows me to look over and see if I’m creeping up or dragging (spoiler: I don’t have perfect tempo). Especially helpful for me on the sower songs but I use it for everything. Again, it is just a nice “double-check” on the tempo..Version: 1.2.1

Awesome little appThis is not a flashy app it just does what it says on the tin and that’s why I love it. This is a Simple and accurate time saver of an app. If you like me naturally write with various tempos getting a temp track to reflect the natural flow of a song can be tedious. This app shows you where you speed up and slow down. It has been often said that people who hear my life performances get far more out of it than the recorded version of the same song. This is because for so many years I bowed to DAW workflow and stuck to a constant tempo. DAW’s now have tools to help you with tempo maps but often as is the case with Logic Pro it falls over when you introduce time signature changes along with tempo changes. This app gives you some of the tools necessary to manage work arounds in your recording process until. Knowledge is power and this little app can help you analyse your music pronto..Version: 1.2.1

Detecting a click tract bpmI use it only to detect the click track count in for the backing tracks I purchase. Some producers publish the tempo but most don’t which makes it unclear visually where sections start and stop. I can have it listen to the count off click audio, set the discovered bpm in Reaper, load a track and see how it lines up many bars down the line. If the tune is played in good time, everything will line up visually and the snap function will be useable. Live bpm worked perfectly for this simple task..Version: 1.2.1

An excellent AppI only used this for around 15minutes lsat night & already I can see how great it is. This is going to be so good for a persons inner clock, because you need to keep the tempo yourself & it isn't given to you via a quarter note click like standard metronomes do. I'm going to use this at my next band rehearsal. I might position it so the whole band can see it. They love to give 100% blame to me (the drummer) for any timing fluctuations. Not fair. I highly recommend it..Version: 1.2.0

Essential AppI use it all the time for mixing my records. It never fails! Giving it a 4 since it could have a better interface, perhaps some digital-looking font and a “night mode”..Version: 1.2.1

WOW! AWESOME!I placed it under my hi-hats tonight @ rehearsal (for 3hrs) & it worked perfectly! Very impressed! 100% satisfied!.Version: 1.2.1

Love using this app.I'm a performing drummer and use this app to help keep an eye on the bands tempo. It really is unique in listening to the tempos and displaying them. I would recommend it. There are few things that could use updating. But overall it is a winner..Version: 1.2.1

Pretty accurate.Saw this app being used by rick beato and must it is accurate. Test it with a metronome..Version: 1.2.1

Been using for 4 yearsI’ve been using this app for almost 4 years while Playing in a 24 piece big band. I Had a few people inquiring how I keep such a good time after last nights rehearsal. I pointed directly to this app and claimed, not only does it keep me honest, but I have proof when the band doesn’t listen well! Lol ! Seriously, this app has saved a few arguments with the Director!! I have never tested its accuracy to a click. However, it’s very very close. And when the band decides a tempo feels good, this app is gold to help repeat that bpm for the next performance if we wish. I’ve been meaning to write a review of this app for a long time. The interest from other band mates last night and the nice comments I received about holding the band together (I’m the Drummer) told me it was time to write this review. Thank you to the developer, your work is very much appreciated..Version: 1.2.1

Awesome appI downloaded this app a few days ago and have been playing with it ever since. If there was some way to calculate the average tempo over what it recorded and displayed the lowest BPM/highest BPM over that period would be great. These numbers could be used for all sorts measurements making it easier to see improvement over time..Version: 1.2.1

Stop the bpm questioningNot so many musicians have a perfect feel for tempo. “We” as base players and drummers are the guides. This app is a must have and it closes out the complaints from singers and other not perfect timers. I (the drummer) set the tempo for the band. Without the app I was not able to SHOW the factual tempo and that is where it gets annoying sometimes. Now the tempo played is not a “feeling” anymore but a fact. Made my live easier. And I can see when I screw up before anybody else 😉. And yes sometimes the singer of solo players want some freedoms, that’s fine too! We than can show them how much freedom we gave them..Version: 1.2.1

Stop the whiningI say that in the title for both people in your band if your using the app, and some of the complaints I read about people who have purchased the app. I found this app when I was at a local jam session in DC. The house drummer has it on a phone on his bass drum. After on jam I immediately downloaded the app. It was that impressive to me. I rarely pay to purchase apps, but this was a no brainer. Years ago I had a thing called a beat bug. You put a trigger on your snare drum, and you’d get the space between hits as a number on a screen. It kind of worked, but had a lot of shortcomings especially since it only worked when you hit the snare on a consistently on the same beats. In most cases this app picks up the BPM in a few seconds, and holds on to it very well. I read reviews saying it’s bad at odd time signatures. They are wrong. Using the speaker from my iPad I played “Love is stronger than justice”, by Sting, and it had no problem keeping up with Vinnie Colaiuta’s perfect timing switching between a groove in 7/8 and a double time chorus in 4/4. I, going to say that folks that had those issues were experiencing user error. I’d say I’m a professional level musician who plays a semi pro amount of gigs each year. Last year I did over 70 gigs, and used this app on many of them. It give you invaluable information on the gig and stuff for you to work on when you get home. It is a speedometer for your drums. No more whining about what happened with the tempo. You’ll have actual documentation. I have had a number of drummers do the exact thing that I did when I first saw the app, which is just download it. You should do the same..Version: 1.2.1

GreatLove this app but today it is crashing and won’t launch —maybe it is my phone-anyone else having this ?.Version: 1.2.1

Stays on screenApp won’t close on new IOS..Version: 1.2.1

Best BPM Counter app!Use it on the daily. From radio, DJ sets, to live bands. When you want to know the BPM the of a song, just fire it up and goes to work( Kind of like Shazam for BPM's). Works great and you don't have to tap!!! Thank you for this app!!!!.Version: 1.2.1

Superb AppFor this money, buy it, what a great little tool. It soon picks up the pulse and gives a very accurate reading. As a drummer I use a Tempo Ref device that is over £100 to purchase, comes from USA, and attaches to my snare drum. This app gives the same reading as my expensive Tempo Ref and reads the rhythm in actual time rather that reading just the snare drum and recording it in half time. The readout is simple and clear, no bells and whistles to fuss with, just a readout of actual time. It’s easy to be critical of any app, particularly a paid app, but for this money, it’s a no brainer, just get it..Version: 1.2.1

Worth itSometimes you just need to quickly know the BPM of a song, and you do not have the time (or the mind!) to do the math. It’s annoying that the orientation is landscape. A bit more difficult to hold with one hand and operate..Version: 1.2.1

Great appThis is a great app for drummers, especially those who play shows with minimal rehearsal. If this functionality could be paired with a count-in metronome and the ability to store set lists, this app would be perfect..Version: 1.2.0

Works Astonishingly WellReliably grabs tempo off of any track with rhythm elements. Sometimes doubles tempo, but that’s easy to deal with. Great job!.Version: 1.2.1

Works great.I am a old school DJ who still spins vinyl. I use this to know the actual BPM of what I am playing on the fly. No more tapping out the beat, just put my phone in front of a speaker..Version: 1.2.1

Only 4/4 time...I absolutely love this app and would recommend it to any and all musicians!!! Sometimes I feel it’s more useful than a click track to be able to watch your tempo and adjust on the fly. It’s not a messy or difficult process like a click track can be. For me it was as simple as getting a phone mount and finding a spot for it on my drum kit. I use this app multiple times a week and I can say it’s well worth the money! Now to answer a few of the questions I had about this app.... It can detect a beat from any instrument, clapping, or pretty much any noise. It has about a 1-3 second delay on reading your tempo. If you have a simple 1-2-3-4 beat, it can easily read it and display your tempo. If you’re in a funky groove with lots of accents it may be a bit more delayed (based on my experience) Lastly, it only detects in a 4/4 time signature. Now this last one is my main issue with the app. I understand you can’t get an instant read on your tempo no matter what. And it’s very usable and helpful even with the slight delay. The main complaint I have is that there’s not a button or toggle switch to go from 4/4 to something like 3/4 or even 6/8. I would love for the developer to possibly add this feature. That being said, when you’re playing in 6/8 time (or anything but 4/4) you’ll still be given a tempo that is reliable and allows you to stay focused on keeping that same BPM in your music. What is frustrating is that if you’re learning a song that should be played at say 60bpm 6/8 timing. You CANT expect your app to tell you when you’re at 60bpm in 6/8... you’ll get something totally different! Since it is reading your beat based on 4/4 timing. Overall, I love the app and think the benefits far outweigh any and all negatives. It’s very manageable to get around these cons. It’s just not as easy and polished as it could be. Great app, I love it and thank you!!!!.Version: 1.2.1

Works very well!I usually don't rate apps. I wanted to rate this one because I was so impressed. I'm using it on an iPhone 5 with the latest OS. It's not optimized for the taller screen, but that doesn't affect functionality. I used this at my last band practice and wasn't expecting it work. I couldn't believe how quickly and accurately it started tracking the bpm, even despite the very loud volume of our music. One thing I noticed is that it sometimes loses the time signature. For example, it might be reading at 120bpm, but then a change in drum pattern will cause it to read at half or double tempo. This happens very rarely and doesn't affect the usefulness of the app. The only change I'd like to see in future updates, other than being optimized for iPhone 5 screen, is the ability to tap something to indicate where a song starts and stops. Sort of like a lap timer on a stopwatch. That way I could go back and look at the tempo graph for various songs. All in all, it's a great app..Version: 1.1.2

Can’t close app on iPhone X modified reviewPreviously I stated you could not close the app on an iPhone X however as the developer pointed out if you do turn the phone sideways you can close it by swiping up. Thank you so much for the response this alleviated a very frustrating problem for this app..Version: 1.2.1

PurchasedCannot get the device to pick up vibration to give tempo.Version: 1.2.1

Fantastic super useful music applicationI use it in a couple of different ways. One of the ways I use it as a songwriter is when I get a work tape from a writing session I play it back and then use liveBPM to determine the BPM of the song so I can then pull it into my Studio One DAW and then use the tempo detected by LiveBPM to produce the demo. So much more efficient and time saving to use liveBPM rather than trying to guess the tempo and trial and error using a metronome. It’s also very useful in a live club situation where I’ve used it to research which popular song tempos resonate with different demographics in different genres of music..Version: 1.2.1

Works! This is about the only app out there I have found which can actually listen to you play and report bpm without having to tap the screen (which is a cop out). Very useful for band practice. History is good. 4 stars not 5 because I'd like an update for new retina devices, current one is a bit blurry and cropped. Would be nice if it auto selected bpm range too..Version: 1.2.0

Brilliant, simple app, great for drummingWorks fantastically well behind the drum kit, to monitor tempo changes without having a click track..Version: 1.2.1

Hi DanielLove this app, use it almost every session! Daniel is there any way to feed audio into the headphone port to detect beat? An option for detecting 3/4 time would also be amazing, thanks!.Version: 1.2.1

AmazingFantastic app. I'm still in shock it actually works. Would love a version with a "count off" feature so I don't need two devices for gigs. Thanks again..Version: 1.2.1

Very useful appAs a drummer, I always dreamed of having a gadget for real-time feedback of my tempo. As an electrical engineer, it seemed a mobile app would be the perfect way to go. But to reliably extract the bpm from whatever acoustic sounds the mic is picking up? Wow, that's a tough problem. While looking around for ideas and tools on how I might make my own, I stumbled upon liveBPM. There must be a lot more under the hood than the simple interface would suggest, because this app is very robust. I'm very impressed with how it responds to changes in volume, rhythm pattern or tempo. Clap a simple rhythm along to a metronome in the background, then turn off the metronome to watch your how your internal tempo drifts. It's fun to watch the bpm graph with your eyes open or closed. If new releases of liveBPM are planned I'd love to add a second graph displaying the position of individual claps relative to the current measure. An excellent, well-engineered app..Version: 1.2.0

Perfect for vinyl DJsFor true vinyl DJs this is an invaluable tool!! No foolish tapping required, just leave this app open and you have a live + accurate display of your current track’s bpm. Easily the best $4 I have spent on my music this year... Thank you Daniel !!.Version: 1.2.1

Good for what it’s meant forIt does a good job of tracking tempo. However, I wish it would support split screen on the iPad so I can run it side by side with Forscore. It’s a terrible waste of space running in full screen. I will still give it 4 stars because it is successful in reading and accurate bpm when playing live..Version: 1.2.1

Fantastic appI'm a drummer and used this app for the first time on my gig tonight. It gave me readings throughout my performance so I could tell when I was pushing or pulling the tempo. Very nice! The only reason it's not 5* is the interface isn't very good looking, but otherwise it's an excellent tool for musicians to work on their tempos..Version: 1.2.0

Love it!I've often needed to know the tempo of tracks. The brilliant thing about this app is that it draws a graph. So you can see whether the tempo is a constant - which for live music and music from earlier decades isn't a given. Over the years I've tapped the tempo out on a DAW and used tempo matching in the DAW if I suspected a changing tempo. But this app makes it so much quicker. I've worked on various TV dance shows where a quick idea of the tempo is essential before committing to a dance style. This app gives you just that and is very accurate. It's not so good with tracks in Waltztime so I still measure those myself. But I would be very sad not to have this most useful app..Version: 1.2.1

Works every time without fail, but maybe runs fastI’ve been using this at least once a day on average for six months. … very reliable and picks up the beat very fast. However comparing its readings to accepted readings posted by DJ’s online it might be running a couple of BPM fast. Or maybe it’s my turn table..Version: 1.2.1

This app is great!First off this app is totally worth the money and I recommend it to any serious rhythm player. I have already been promoting it a lot. I am a professional drummer and I have been looking for something like this for years! Unless your playing with backing tracks or recording, Playing with a Click is too Mechanical. This app allows the tempo to breathe, and its like a little angel on your shoulder telling you the band is speeding up or slowing down. It is totally worth the money, but I have two requests: 1) MUST HAVE Include integrated metronome with capability to store tempos for a set list like the "Tempo" app this way I could click on a song and see the tempo to start out with. It would be great if you could choose how many measures for that to go for, just to help start at the right tempo, then the app could go into BPM detection mode. That's the only problem with this app is that it does not help me know exactly what tempo to start a song, and during a show I do not have time to experiment with different taps to find the right tempo. 2) NICE TO HAVE Ability to save the graph for different performances If you could integrate number 1 above this would be the best tempo tool app on the market and I would easily pay at least twice as much maybe even four times the current value. Please add number 1 above!! Great app thanks!! CV.Version: 1.1.2

Useful appI have enjoyed using this app, and the developer was very responsive to a question I had..Version: 1.2.1

Needs an updateUsually very good. I use it every week. Since last iOS update it no longer opens. Please update. Edit: I reinstalled the app & it is working once again..Version: 1.2.1

Live bpmGreat app.... simple an does what it says it does. reads the bpm of what ever it picks up through the mic. this has been very helpful for recording. thanks!.Version: 1.1.2

An Absolute must have...If you are a drummer this is a no brainer. I was skeptical at first, but after testing on a tune in 7/4 I was playing with a group, I was sold. Pro drummer, covering multiple genres, and this app is my best friend. Great practice tool, excellent gigging tool...this lets the pocket breathe to your personal feel. Sure a metronome is a great static representation of the time, but this to me personally is a greater tool, letting you know how much your time alters throughout a tune. Very accurate. My only request ( a crazy one) to let the app drive a metronome through something like audiobus, at a user chosen interval( metronome bpm adjusts over a set time or number of bars) to allow the click to be fed to others..Version: 1.2.0
