Crosswords for Negative User Reviews

Marxist GameI will never support a Marxist leftist game. The belief in the “Notion that children must be eventually DISABUSED” of Santa is disgusting. “Santa” was founded in the giving to the poor by the Roman Catholic St. Nicholas..Version: 2022.1

Much potential, but bug-ladenI have been loving this app since my days with an original iPad. Without hesitation, I paid the fairly hefty premium for the full version. I am disappointed that I can't recommend the current version—it's buggy, and the developer has been slow or outright unresponsive to my bug reports and suggestions. Some of the bugs are deal-breakers..Version: 3.53

Deceptive sale tacticsThe interface made it appear as though purchasing the app would allow you to download ny times crosswords. However, only after purchasing does it prompt for a separate login to a ny times crossword subscription in order to download the puzzles. The syndicated, week-old puzzles are available on other apps for free—this interface is deceptive and designed to trick people into paying $10 for the app before revealing that you still have to pay more for the puzzles. Developers should be ashamed of themselves for using this tactic..Version: 2020.6

Too easyThe “hard” puzzle was easy and you cannot tell when you are done. Meh..Version: 2021.2

Nice interfaceNice interface word puzzle game. Clean and fun..Version: 3.53

This app used to be accessible for the visually impaired but now it is notWhen I first downloaded this app a few years ago, it had full accessibility for voiceover. Now the keyboard is no longer accessible, although the grid still is. I am blind and I use voiceover on the iPhone, but now I am unable to access the keyboard to input my answers. This means that the puzzle bundle I bought last year is no longer something I am able to use. I would really appreciate if the keyboard could be made accessible again for those of us who rely on screen-reading technology in order to use our phones and enjoy apps like this..Version: 2021.2

No access to Telegraph crosswordsThis app no longer has access to Telegraph crosswords which was my sole reason for installation. Will this be permanent because if so I’ll delete the app?.Version: 3.60.3

You have to pay upgrade to pay more ?It appears this app is nothing but a money grab. You pay to upgrade only to find out that upgrade only gives you access to download crosswords for more money. There is also no one to contact for support. Huge rip off !.Version: 2022.1

Can’t access most British crosswordsWas using this app for years before it stopped importing Telegraph and Independent puzzles..Version: 3.60.2

Purchased bundle doesn’t downloadPurchase a puzzle bundle and it thinks it downloaded, screen is blank, no puzzles. Tried to download a different sample problem. It asked to start now, I answered yes. I got a blank screen with a running clock in the bottom right. This app is definitely not recommended..Version: 2022.1

Nov. 2017 update brokeThe latest version (3.59.5) is broke on my iPhone. The top 2-3 rows are grayed-out with some kind of overlay. I cannot select any squares under the overlay..Version: 3.59.5

Meh.I have yet to be able to delete a puzzle. directions aren't helpful..Version: 2022.1

Reasonable software; non-existent supportI bought this software so that I could download puzzles from a couple of websites and import them into third App. Unfortunately, the functionality to import downloaded puzzles is not available in the trial version. However, when I downloaded some sample puzzles (.puz files) I was unable to import them. They would just show up as grayed-out items and I could not import them. I sent a message to the developer in late December. To date I’ve not heard a reply. If you want to plunk down ~$10 for a non supported piece of software, this is a good place to start!.Version: 2020.2

BasterdsLike previous reviewers I’ve been using this app for at least 7 years to complete the independent crossword most days. Keeps my poor brain active. Anyway, It stopped downloading the Independent a few days ago so I deleted the old app and downloaded the latest version. On this new version I then had to upgrade to get back to where I was. OK - I’m happy to upgrade for the price of a cappuccino given how much use I’ve given it over the years. Fair enough. It costs money to develop an app. But NOW I can’t download the independent at all. It’s disappeared from the available list. So my cappuccino has gone cold and smells a bit of manure. (Not using the other word cos my review will be marked as too rude). Anyway. Stand Alone. I’ll be asking for my money back. Better luck next time. I’m off to find an app that works..Version: 3.60.2

Paid app, not freeHave to pay to subscribe to crosswords. Wouldn’t have a problem with that if it was disclosed in the description of the app. Uninstalling..Version: 3.60.5

Don’t waste your moneyIf you like UK puzzles then there’s nothing here. Even trying to download old puzzles is very difficult if not impossible, scrolling back using the date picker is very buggy, it frequently sticks on the current month, or when scrolling backwards the current date appears and it then won’t go back. I have never yet got further back than 2013. The old version was better but of course virtually no UK puzzles now available. Yes it isn’t their fault but surely they could make something available. If you want a US puzzle then it may well be fine, if you want anything else then don’t waste your time or money..Version: 2021.2

Now demands additional $10 to download puz formatExtremely annoying, having already paid for this app and multiple previous versions on iOS and going back to palmOS. However, I discovered that one of the older versions - also called Crosswords, but with a dated skeuomorphic icon - will actually open .puz if you download it from safari. Of course if you subscribe to the NYT puzzle, you might as well use their app..Version: 3.60.2

App not connectingSo this app recently stopped connecting to the Internet... None of the websites attached to the app including developer sites are working either. Time to look for a new app..Version: 3.56

Hate the UpdateLoved this app until the new update. Super sluggish. Lost the option to delete a puzzle. Would get rid of the easy and simple puzzles leaving only the harder ones to work on. Now everything is cluttered..Version: 2019.4

Doesn’t work with IOS upgradeI find there is no usable keyboard now with my iPad. The upgrade changed the keyboard, which I don’t like at all, and the keyboard on this app is still in the old larger format and can not be used on the puzzles..Version: 2020.6

Annoying updateYeah I know that the developers have to generate income every once in a while and therefore sell an "upgrade" but this upgrade is annoying. It has busy looking distractive quirks. For example if you want to peek at an answer or letter you get an animated arc of choices including Tweet, Facebook and rebus which for the life of me I would never use--in this lifetime. And each time it appears the arc is positioned differently. They also require more precise touch selecting so that you have to touch exactly in the middle of the bar to go from horizontal to vertical and not elsewhere or it won't work. There are other little annoyances which declare this is not the same as the tried and true Crosswords app, now called Crosswords Classic. I wish they had simply left it the same, no value in this upgrade except that they will likely work on this one while letting the old version languish. One month later: I've used this "new improved" interface for a month. The more I use it the less I like it. It's awkward, unintuitive and disorganized. For example my NYT puzzles stopped downloading--no longer available on this app according to the developer (as requested by the NYT). Can't find the subscription interface to check the details. It's a mess and need to revert mostly to the old interface..Version: 3.59.3

Half the features, confusing settings, unstableThe original Crosswords Classic is by far the best crossword app for iOS. This paid upgrade is missing many of the customization features of the original, has a very confusing interface, and the settings pane comes without any explanation of what any of the features do. I will admit that it looks prettier, but the whole thing feels rushed. To top it off, it crashes on my iPhone multiple times per session, with a near 100% crash rate trying to load up the puzzle info pane. Good luck trying to read the puzzle title or notes from inside the puzzle. The ability to see the clues in a list is an iPhone only "feature". Why on earth would you REMOVE a feature from the app when it runs on a larger screen which should handle it even easier? It's also possible to cheat the best time by solving the puzzle entirely in this clues-only mode, because the timer only runs when you're actively viewing the puzzle. This is a holdover from the classics app, and it's how people are able to solve the NY Times Sunday puzzle in under 3 minutes. Don't worry, they aren't just super smart. Save your money. Get the classic version and wait until this one is more mature. Much more mature..Version: 3.2

Used to be greatAfter the most recent update, the cursor does not move over filled in squares, can’t delete all wrong answers, and other subtle functions have disappeared. I will be deleting this app..Version: 2019.4

Useless for the Telegraph CrypticI upgraded today from Crossword Classic, which had stopped downloading the Telegraph 2 days ago. I upgraded specifically to access the Telegraph, which was listed on the app info. My sign in to the Telegraph wasn’t accepted on either my iPhone or my iPad (both running iOS 11.4.1); the sign in works perfectly well on the Telegraph site. Then the option to sign in disappeared completely along with all signs of the Telegraph. The app itself is horribly designed. The original Crossword Classic app, which I’ve used for years, was easy to navigate. This version is absurd—but I could live with it if the Telegraph worked. Either fix the issue or please give me a refund..Version: 3.60.2

Waste of Time & SpaceAll interesting crosswords are unavailable - developer has not done homework with original providers. User interface is baffling and much worse than in the predecessor. Don’t bother!.Version: 3.60.4

Where are my puzzles?I enjoyed the starter puzzles so thought I would purchase more. As far as I know the purchase went through, but I cannot find the rest after I did the first one. How do I get Liz Gorski vol. 1 that is supposed to have 20 puzzles. Anyone have an answer? It is very frustrating, but I upgraded hoping for a better experience..Version: 2022.1

Cant access Telegraph puzzlesReally liked this App so paid to upgrade to the pro version. But it won't download the Daily Telegraph cryptic puzzles and I have a subscription for this. But when I try to enter credentials to access them nothing happens. Cant find any support apart from the faq which doesn't answer this problem. Feel like Ive wasted the upgrade cost. But works on my iPhone! Not happy!.Version: 3.59.3

From 5 stars to 2I was loving these puzzles until I suddenly had no access unless I paid. They shouldn’t say it’s free if it requires purchases later..Version: 2022.1

Missing best crosswordsI looked forward to every Saturday evening and Sunday morning to the two best crosswords. Why aren’t they included? Not planning on going Pro until they are back and included. Thanks..Version: 3.60.4

Nice try, but lacking in key areasThis is not a bad attempt at a crossword app, but it fails in very critical ways. First and foremost, clues don’t tell you when a word is an abbreviation, or if it’s multiple words, how many there will be. These are huge issues, that make solving puzzles feel ridiculous and frustrating without that. I’m also not a huge fan of the ridiculous color scheme they use. Otherwise, it behaves decently enough as a crossword puzzle app. But there are better ones out there..Version: 2022.1

It’s OKPuzzles are good but needs a couple of features 1. An option to highlight errors as made OR 2. An option to search the entire puzzle for errors. You can only check for incorrect letters within the individual clue.Version: 3.60.2

In-app upgrade not clearHit the upgrade button and was expecting to go to the App Store. So, I put my finger on the home button to switch apps and before I knew it, I had paid $9.99. NO other warning on the upgrade fee..Version: 2020.3

Umm - A DowngradeI don’t get it. This is marketed as an upgrade to their old app. The only thing it does better is give you a little info on the providers. On the other hand, the google search button doesn’t work and the delete puzzle button works but is clunky. Not impressed..Version: 2020.6

Disappointing. This app is consistently rated as one of the top crossword apps but it has stability issues on multiple iPads (Retina, Air 2). Switching to and from the app causes the grid of puzzles to freeze or show a blank screens. Frequently puzzles in progress will be displayed in the grid of puzzles as all black. The only fix is the kill the app and restart it. It’s been this way for months so if this is the best app for crosswords on iOS, I’m can’t imagine what the other lower-rated ones are like..Version: 3.53

It Used to Be Better…It works, but gets flakier with every release. The top row is often partially hidden, switching away to another app and back again changes the solve orientation from vertical to horizontal (but you won’t know it until you start typing), navigation in “clue list mode” is awful (whereas it used to be great in older versions). I’ve been with this app and its earlier incarnations for well over a decade, but I’m starting to look at (hopefully) better options..Version: 2022.1

Not Off to a Great StartWell, I downloaded the app, hopeful that I could do online puzzles on my iPhone, beyond the NYT puzzle I do in their proprietary app. Seemed legit, so I went ahead and paid the $10 to upgrade without trying out the app first. That was my mistake. Downloaded a .puz file from the net, and this app refused to open it, it just remained grayed-out and the icon wanted to be opened with Puzzazz. Next, I opened a puzzle from within the app, and the menu bar from my iPhone 7 all of a sudden extended itself down and obscured the top row of the puzzle. Lesson learned: Always test drive it before you buy it..Version: 2019.5

Delete buttonApp is good; has challenging free puzzles. Biggest annoyance is that the backspace button is small and I always miss it because it’s offset from the keyboard.Version: 2019.4

Not Crossword Classic for sureTried this one for a few days after using Crossword Classic for years. Glad I gave the developers some additional $$ because Crossword Classic has been my most used app on my iPad since iPad’s existed, but this app just isn’t my cup of tea. I gave it a shot, but I’m back with my beloved Crossword Classic and just dealing with the little eccentricities!.Version: 2020.3

Stopped giving best crosseordsCan no longer get my favourite crosswords on this app so will not use anymore.Version: 3.60.2

It was great…now it’s horribleWhy doesn’t is show you when you get a puzzle right any more? Why can’t you revels all errors? Why would you kill those options? What’s the point if you don’t know if you got it right or not. You have to scroll through each clue and see if that one is correct. Makes no sense..Version: 2020.6

Buggy App, Unresponsive PublisherI’ve used this for years and put up with lots of little bugs because the volume and assortment of puzzles was good. Lately I’ve found that more than half the time, none of the difficult or hard puzzles show up on the list…then will randomly reappear. I’ve contacted the publisher and gotten no response. Looking at the many negative reviews here to which there are also no responses, I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath..Version: 2022.1

Broken for UK Indie and TelegraphUsed to use this app daily to complete the independent and telegraph crosswords. Was also holding out for the Telegraph General Knowledge crosswords after a support agent of the developer told me they were working on it. As with other people here I don’t now seem to be able to download or sync my choice of crosswords, rendering the app useless to me. I did email support to find out any more details, but haven’t heard anything back. Therefore, 1 Star..Version: 3.60.3

Blechhhh!!You never get a second chance to make a first impression. MY first impression is that this app is UTTERLY FEATURELESS. No error checking except for individual squares. No notice of correct solution. How basic can you get??? I don’t understand the high ratings of others and I’ll continue my search for a GOOD crossword app.Version: 3.60.5

Can’t find helpLengthy menu options but no solutions to clues!.Version: 2020.3

Works—Sort OfThe app works, but there are frequent drawing and navigation glitches. It often takes two or three taps of the Menu button to actually get the menu. And the menu itself! I realize the developers probably thought it would be cool to have it pop over the current square, but the fact that the buttons are really small and they move around means you have to look closely for the button you want then tap carefully on the right one every time. Sometimes, tapping the arrow to skip to the next clue in fact skips to the one after that—or it it just doesn’t skip at all. They've had years to get this right, with this and the Crosswords Classic app. Bugs are fixed, only to reappear a few versions later. All in all, it’s quite maddening and frustrating..Version: 3.56

WSJ stopped importingI’ve bee a fan since ‘classic’ for my WSJ puzzles. Today I downloaded the 21 Aug file from WSJ, opened it, and saw ‘no new puzzles were imported.’ Please help! (I tried your website and support page and Twitter, but everything is stale—no recent questions or product updates).Version: 2021.2

Clunky and expensive with in house purchasesThis is not a user friendly app. It is ok when you are in a crossword but not when you are trying to navigate and look around crosswords. It is expensive for the app and then to get all these bundles it costs extra. Very disappointed..Version: 3.59.2

No additional puzzlesApp comes with a few starter puzzles and offers other bundles for sale. I tried to buy two of these, they took my money, never provided any additional puzzles. So, for two bucks it’s not worth my time to pursue. But save your own time and money and don’t deal with these crooks..Version: 2022.1

Crossing “t’s” and Dotting “i’s”I have finished multiple puzzles on hard difficulty. I found most of the questions to be intriguing and rewarding when solved. But I’m writing this review because in more than one puzzle I found puzzles answers that didn’t coincide. On on puzzle an answer was clearly MTVDJ. Though an intersecting clue with the answer IRV changed MTVDJ to MTVVJ and which was found to be correct in the info screen..Version: 2019.8

Zero supportTerrible app. Zero support. Didn’t work for what I needed it to do, although I had to pay $9.99 to find out it was useless. Contact the developer and have heard nothing back after over a month. Don’t waste your money..Version: 2021.2

Can't return to home screenI wanted to buy a bundle, but the app wouldn't return me to the home screen from one of the puzzles. I can't get out of the puzzle except by starting a new built-in puzzle. So the interface needs work..Version: 2019.4

Not quite readyI updated from the classic version and although I like it the format for the iPhone X, the interface is kinda cluttered and some things don’t seem to work. Namely deleting puzzles that I’m never going to do. I try to delete all but nothing happens...?.Version: 3.60.2

Not ready for primetime yetMy review is for an iPhone 6. The original app, Crossword Classics, remains my app of choice on iOS. This one has a cleaner interface and a nicer keyboard but too many bugs. Things I’ve encountered in the last 24 hours: Getting to a puzzle’s info screen (accidentally) and not having the “Back to Puzzle” link at the bottom. This has happened more than once. Incorrect highlighting of boxes when listing just the clues. It also highlights several boxes rather than just the one you want. Skipping several clues when clicking the Next/Prev Clue arrows in both across and down. These are full-on irrefutable bugs. The rest of my issues are opinion. First, I would rather have the menu of options at the top of the screen away from my finger as I don’t use it often. Crossword Classics has this option, this app doesn’t. It’s not easy to reveal just a square and then just a clue without first having to go to the settings in the middle of a puzzle. Checking for errors in the entire puzzle is unintuitive. You can zoom out too far. I.e. the puzzle becomes smaller than the actual screen and it’s hard to zoom it back to the exact spot where it fills the screen horizontally. Looking forward to future updates but for now, Crossword Classics still works great for me..Version: 3.56
