✓ Decent, but there is betterOnly gives 2 zoom levels, either big and eating up your phone's real estate or too small to accurately tap the spaces. When scrolling through the clues, does not consistently recenter on the puzzle well. The pop-up navigator is a clumsy solution. It has an option to view the clues and what has been filled in on the puzzle. One thing that would improve the app is if you could directly answer the clues in that view. 2Across is better..Version: 0

✓ Awesome app...til it started crashing.This app was working like a champ. A great time-passer and the clues were tough enough to be challenging, but not overly obscure enough to be irritating. That's all over now, though, since for some reason it has just decided to stop working. Banner/Title page comes up when I open the app, but then it crashes and spits me back to the home screen. Rinse, repeat. Pretty disappointing. I notice that the full version of 'Crosswords' doesn't have nearly any of the negative reviews here, so I will give that one a try. ✓ Problem after updateI very much like the app and have been using it for years without issues. Almost exclusively now, I use it for the Independent cryptic crosswords. Unfortunately, after the last update, the app now incorrectly shows only the total number of letters in an answer: it no longer shows the number of letters in individual words of a multi-word answer, and it also no longer uses two colors to represent the constituent words. If there is a new setting that turns on this functionality, I haven't yet been able to find it. I hope this gets fixed as it significantly diminishes the appeal of the app..Version: 2.70

The puzzles I tried had far too many references to modern American TV and POP culture for my liking though I am sure others wouldn't mind this. I hardly want to spend $10 when your light version is broken and you don't care. I noticed that the App will gladly give me the opportunity to purchase new puzzles, when it is stuck. How convenient! ✓ Good but with flawsThis is a fairly good app with some nice features...hints like revealing a letter or error checking the word or entire puzzle. However, in the few games I've played so far, there have been spelling errors in the clues, significant enough to make it near impossible to guess the answer--examples: "you may hire one to move your vase" (answer was "lawyer"--"vase" should have been "case"), and "event for getting rid of deaf people's stuff" (answer was "estate sales"--"deaf" should have been "dead"), and there are more. Many of the clues don't indicate when the answer is an abbreviation, and none of them indicate multiple-word answers. As frustrated as I am with being unable to trust the accuracy of the clues, I can't imagine paying money for it..Version: 2.27
✓ Buyer bewareI purchased this app for both my iPhone and iPad. I later made an in-app purchase to upgrade them in order for them to sync with each other. It turns out that even though Stand Alone Inc. has no problem with taking your money, the feature is broken. In-app purchases do not work with this product and you’re stuck with having spent your money but getting nothing. I’ve been emailing the vendor since January, who every month promises to fix the problem but never does. The latest e-mail was yesterday when, once again, they missed the date they stated they would have the new app in the App Store. My guess is they outsource the programming to another company and Stand Alone is just too cheap to fix the problem. NOTE: they’re not too cheap to take your money for a feature they know they can’t fulfill. And it’s been going on since the release of iOS 7.0. I like the app and the puzzles are great, but it’s clear that if you want the convenience of syncing this app between your iPhone and iPad, or computer, the company just outright lies in claiming the in-app purchase will upgrade these apps with that capability..Version: 2.47
✓ Horrible!The latest update is a POS! The app will no longer load any new puzzles. Customer service, of course, blamed it on Apple. They told me to delete the app and reload. ✓ Worst Crosswords Ever!To the compiler: You're not very good at this, are you? Do a course in compiling crosswords, then try again. Here's a couple of hints for you: Answers should not be made-up words or phrases; Clues should indicate if the answer has more than one word; You need to decide if your crossword is cryptic or straight, or generalist or specialised, then stick to that. The basis of this game is great and it is a valiant effort, but it is WAY to scrunched together. I've been playing for about ten minutes now and the whole time, I have been yelling at the game because I pressed the wrong button because it is WAY to close to the one I wanted. In landscape mode, the clues are WAY to close to the right-hand keys, expecially the backspace. Whenever you try to hit it, you have to be extra careful or else you will hit a clue instead and it will bring you to it and if it's one you have already done, you might end up deleting it. ✓ Good puzzle mechanics - Mediocre CW experience.Puzzle (app) mechanics are great. Readability. Hints. Function. Layout. All good. Puzzles themselves, not so much. I do CW puzzles for fun, to keep my mind sharp, and to learn new words. National newspaper puzzles are good at this. These puzzles here are created by people enamored with their own cleverness. If you're looking to broaden your word base, look elsewhere, unless, that is, you need to know the first name of the mayor of the Brazilian hamlet 23.5 km. ESE of Rio (7 letters), or, the Latin name of the 3rd earthen jar from the left found in the Assyrian caves by Fred Flub in 1424 AD (6 letters). The creators also love rural British colloquialisms even a Londoner wouldn't recognize. But their worst creations are words with hints ending in "?" or "sort of like", etc. These words and word groups are complete non-sequiturs and couldn't be guessed by anyone until you have about 93% of the letters. It's sort of like "Let's show you how clever we are by coming up with a 20 character word group only WE are smart enough to figure out." Really a shame because the puzzle mechanics and presentation is first rate. If you're looking for less frustration, better more realistic word sets, and more fun, look elsewhere. 4 stars for the puzzle and app mechanics and presentation, none for the egos creating the wordsets themselves..Version: 2.24
✓ Two +'s and several -'sThis crossword has the advantage of having a small-ish keyboard, leaving more room for the puzzle itself. It also has a nice way of shifting from 'down' to 'across' and vice versa by tapping on the clue. But it has some disadvantages that rule it out for me. I found it difficult to get intermediate grid sizes; the usual Mac way of enlarging and reducing by finger-spreading sometimes works smoothly and sometimes seems to have a long lag time. The total range of sizes is somewhat narrow. For example, I couldn't make the puzzle small enough to see the whole thing at once. Perhaps the feature that annoyed me the most is that if I started filling in a word in the middle of the word and then put a letter of the final square, the app immediately jumped to the next clue, even though I hadn't filled in the beginning of the clue yet. Ideally, it would go to the beginning of the word to let me fill in the remaining letters. The app also seems rather jittery; the grid has a tendency to move around a lot. I didn't find the navigation arrows helpful but some might. I also didn't find the magnifying glass helpful but, again, some might. I couldn't see a way to make the keyboard go away entirely. Maybe it's there and I just couldn't find it. Nor could I see a way to change the size of the clue font itself..Version: 0
✓ Too confusing.If you are outside of the USA, steer clear, there are too many Americanisms that any one outside would have no idea what the editor is going on about. In many places, it seems the compiler just filled in the squares with letters, then made up clues to suit. All I am looking for is a straight foreword dictionary based crossword, no matter how difficult, that can challenge me, not one where I have to search the internet searching for the meaning of the clues. ✓ Bad Clues and Obscure AnswersI enjoy doing these puzzles for a short amount of time. There are clues that are challenging and fun, but there are always several clues in each puzzle that are terrible. Many of the clues are poor. Example: "The ____(3)". Many answers are also annoying. It seems as though the writer completed the puzzle and then Googled answers to see what he could make out of the random words left over. These often end up being last names of irrelevant or super obscure people or words from foreign languages. I've done a lot of puzzles that are a "good" frustrating because they're challenging, but these are frustrating because the clues and answers are dumb..Version: 2.70

✓ Misspelled words as answersIt's a good game for passing time, BUT, some of the answers to the words are misspelled. For example, I have one answer that's "lipsyncing". All the other lines confirm this to being the word, too. Only problem is that in order for it to fit, there needs to be an "h" in the word: "lipsynching", which isn't a word. Another thing I'm not liking is that some of the answers are phrases, or parts of a sentence. For example, one answer I have is "mayigo" (may I go?). ✓ Sample puzzlesI've solved all of the puzzles that are available when you first download the app, but when you try to download a sample to decide wether or not you want to buy the whole package, it says "this may take a moment", and it just won't download. At this point the app is useless. You click "download sample" and it immediately wants you to login and purchase it. If you want to try a new puzzle package, don't bother. But now all of a sudden it won't space itself out on the screen correctly. Half of the puzzle/clues are hidden under the keyboard, it won't scroll all the way down, I can't hide the keyboard, and the black navigation/clue bar is nowhere to be found (presumably also hidden under the keyboard). ✓ Nice UI - but not a good ad for the full versionI am a Guardian cryptic crossword fan and although I like the feel of pen and paper I thought I would give this a whirl with a view to buying the full version if I liked it. Always handy to have a second or third crossword handy for those long flights! Sadly, the crosswords included in the light version (kudos for spelling it correctly!) are all in the 'a little-bit-cryptic' US style. Having lived and worked in the US I regularly did the crossword in USA Today, of which these puzzles are reminiscent, and I often struggled with the abundance of clues that assumed a knowledge of American history, places, chat show hosts, colloquiolisms, obscure (to us) TV actors etc. No major complaint about that - I learned a great deal about the country as a result - however, as a taster for the full version of this app, this will be unlikely to satisfy a British cruciverbalist - especially one who is a fan of the Guardian crossword! I confess that I merely skimmed through most of the puzzles but I could see it wasn't going to get any better. Having said that, I'm not 100% in agreement with previous reviewers who have suggested the clues are 'ill conceived' or 'insufficient'. They are simply the type of clues that style of puzzle contains, and without that deeper Americana knowledge you're going to struggle anyway. I know I did! I'd like to point out that this concern is about the CONTENT not the appearance or usability of the app, which looks good. ✓ Nice Interface, Odd Puzzles...I think this crossword game actually has a really nice interface. I tried 2 Across also, and this one seems much easier to navigate. However, a couple of the clue-answer pairs seemed really strange with bad spellings. Ex. The answer to "Add a handlebar, perhaps?" was "growamusdash"... and another answer of "Colin Powell" was spelled "Colon"... so there's some work to do with the quality of the puzzles. ✓ Wonderful, but 1 major glitch and 2 minorWell designed, with good controls, good layout and lots of puzzles to solve--some quite good, many with obscure pop artists' names. It also does have a flag if wrong setting, turns the letter red, so you'll know right away if you're on track. The one major glitch? Even if you have "jump over filled squares" turned on, it still overwrites the first letter in a word! Thus, one is forever entering the correct letter, but the app puts it into the wrong square and you end up having to backtrack. What could have been an amazing feature (and usually is for other letters in a word) is simply a repeating nuisance. Next, it's all too often that you tap on a square on the left edge of the screen and end up back at the list of puzzles--a nuisance. Finally, when you're done, it covers the screen and asks if you want to solve another--but that happens so quickly, you can no longer see the puzzle you just completed! Much better would be a simple message below the puzzle, so that you could keep on admiring your handiwork! (You can get back to the puzzle, but it requires several steps!).Version: 2.47

Content is the problem. The ones I’ve done so far are heavily, heavily USA centric and banallly so at that. Think quiz show hosts of the past, US breakfast cereals, restaurant chains. You’ll also need a thorough knowledge of US sports terminology and personalities. Clues sometimes also assume a USA basis (e.g. referring to congress rather than the US Congress). The narrow world view on display is somewhat nauseating at times as is the use of bastardised and US slang English..Version: 2.80.03

✓ Great but glitchyDecent number of free puzzles to solve. But there's a technical problem I keep running into. Swapping clues from "across" to "down" is done by double-tapping any of the squares. But every time I play, I run into the issue of the double tap not working and I get stuck in either "down" or "across" orientation until the glitch decides to work. Sometimes it takes several minutes of randomly tapping around the board until it finally starts working again. Very frustrating!!.Version: 2.70
