Natural Cycles: Birth Control for Negative User Reviews

A mixed experienceWent on this app with the plan of getting pregnant fairly soon after coming off the pill, but wanting to get to know my cycle first. Had a bad experience with this app at first and getting the thermometer (which is just a bog standard one, they don’t make that clear), getting charged extra too and after much back and forth with customer services my complaints were taken seriously and I gave them another chance, 6 weeks later. However the app was extremely inaccurate for me - thought it was great once it got to know me better, I got pregnant within a few months but after going for an early ultrasound it completely missed my ovulation, conception etc and I am actually over 4 weeks more pregnant than it thought. I’ve tried to change my due date multiple times in the app so I can continue using it but it keeps telling me I’m wrong so I can no longer actually use this and it’s a waste of money having if any longer as it’s rendered all remaining features useless. Some of the pregnancy stuff was useful (tips, week by week updates) but even logging symptoms was very limited, there wasn’t even an option to log morning sickness! So I’m going to cancel my subscription now and I won’t be recommending this app. It’s not been the best experience with this company as a whole and with the app being fairly limiting that’s the reason for this review..Version: 4.7.4

Good app, thermometer provided could be betterSo far I like the app. Although the thermometer provided could be better as the screen on the thermometer doesn’t light up so I have to make sure I put a light on it to ensure I am reading it accurately or else I can’t see it. I also use the memory option every morning as I like to press snooze. But when you turn it on it shows the memory for maybe 2 seconds before it disappears so I have to make sure I’m paying attention and catch it quick before it disappears..Version: 4.4.7

ScamI downloaded the app and subscribed to the one year plan with thermometer because I’m coming off of birth control for the first time in 18 years. It has been one month and the thermometer has not been sent to me yet so the app is not tracking my cycle properly at all. Apparently the shipping provider they use cannot confirm shipment or tracking information so it has been radio silence from them since subscribing until I finally submitted a help ticket..Version: 5.1.5

Pregnant with twins three months inI used the app as directed. Took my temperature, no intimacy on red days…pregnant before my 4th cycle. They wouldn’t even give me a refund as they said “even with perfect use 2 out of every 100 users will get pregnant”. So I’m just a fluke? Don’t think so. Found out later three more of my friends using NC also got pregnant. I DO NOT recommend this app if you really don’t want to get pregnant..Version: 4.7.4

Read the terms of service - no refundsNot only is this product not 100% effective, as followed with my doc alongside tracking here, like other reviewers below, I actively check my subscriptions and had canceled (or so I thought) this app a very long time ago. Cut to now when I’ve been charged for a product I haven’t used in a very long time, and they blame “email being sent to spam” and claim I had not properly processed the cancellation on my end. This is an issue the company can resolve, but chooses not to. How convenient that there is a pattern of user experience that is confusing enough to where they conveniently get to charge our cards for services we don’t use. A business like this app should be drafting communications in their email manager to prevent being sent to spam. And even if it does get sent - why am I being charged for services which have not been rendered? This company needs to reevaluate how they audit utilization. If the user shows no data after 3 months, we should be actively informed of proper cancellation procedures, many times over (especially since they are not auditing email communications for spam)..Version: 4.4.1

They don’t care about the customerThe app works just ok if you keep up with it. Took months for mine to be kind of right. Never really was spot on. Wouldn’t recommend to prevent pregnancy unless you are super always 100% regular. WARNING/BEWARE: if you get busy like most moms do and stop using the app beware! The app DOES NOT show up in your active subscriptions in the App Store. So if you use that to monitor all of your charges it will not work in this case. I stopped using the app due to being busy and having a toddler who prevented me from keeping on the schedule. I check my active app subscriptions regularly to avoid being charged for what I don't want. This app does not show up. I forgot I was subscribed then I wake up to an email from them and a credit card charge saying I have been charged. Their policy also prevents you from getting any refunds. I emailed them as soon as I saw the email (within half an hour of receiving) and while my card charge was still pending. They refused my refund even though it was not showing as an active subscription. I didn’t even get a courtesy email that my app would be renewing soon. They just want to screw you out of money. No support for their customer base at all. They are just in it for the money..Version: 3.2.13

Do NOT use for contraceptionI fell accidentally pregnant with this app twice - the second time with very careful use. Both times the app did not suggest that I might want to take a pregnancy test, despite I’m sure knowing from my temperature readings that this was very likely a good idea. I was also unable to clearly log the app failure once I’d discovered for myself that I was in fact pregnant. Instead I had to change my settings to ‘trying to get pregnant’ to record my pregnancy - this suggests to me that NaturalCycles is deliberately not collecting data on app contraception failures outside their own controlled research studies..Version: 3.0.13

Use With Caution...Girls, make sure you do your research before using this. I started using it and thought it was the best thing ever after coming off he pill.. it’s only a year later that I have now discovered how falsely advertised this app is.. when you start using the app, you fill out your information then off you go, then you just buy the subscription when the free trail ends. I have now discovered that on the website that is meant for GP’s, there is a questionnaire that they are supposed to ask patients if they want to use the app. One of the questions is ‘would it be devastating if you became pregnant in the next year’ if you answer no, carry on, if you answer yes it says to not recommend Natural Cycles as an option. The Co-Founder also said in an interview that the app was meant to prevent pregnancy in people that were looking to conceive in the next couple of years and wouldn’t be bothered if it happened earlier. This app has been falsely advertised and NONE of the instagram endorsements that enticed me in to the app state this fact either.. it is a struggle to find it on the website as well. If you want this app for long term use and you don’t want any surprises, look elsewhere, because also once they have taken your money, there is no getting it back.. Only reason I have not given it 1 star is because I thankfully didn’t get knocked up, think it deserves a star...Version: 3.0.18

Didn’t work for meFound it easy to use for one year until I got pregnant, did not work for birth control for me!.Version: 5.1.12

SillyThe silliest part of this app is that your subscription starts before you receive your thermometer. Just an extreme lack of common sense. Essentially pointless up to that point..Version: 4.5.7

Shouldn’t be a certified contraceptiveI have been using this for five months while coming off hormonal birth control and getting ready to try for a baby. I have also been using other charting methods and researching how to chart your fertility. Natural Cycles is not as accurate as other apps and charting methods. It does not change your cover line from month to month and misdetects ovulation, not taking into account irregular cycles. For me this is fine as I am starting to try for a baby now. However if I weren’t in a stable relationship and planning for a child, it would be a massive mistake to use NC as a contraceptive. It has changed my fertile window retrospectively when I ovulated earlier than usual, so days that were green turned red after the fact. If you would consider a termination if you were to fall pregnant, do not use this app as birth control. Only use it if you’re planning a child in the near future. I think it’s awful that this inaccurate app is marketed at people that really don’t want to get pregnant, and I think there will be law suits..Version: 3.1.5

Subscription is impossible to cancelI used this app to help track my cycle for conception. The problem came after I received the email telling me my subscription would renew a month later. So I re-downloaded the app in order to cancel. I found the instructions on the website and the app very confusing but after an hour of following the instructions very carefully was certain I had cancelled. Then a month later I receive a receipt email saying it’s renewed. When I complained over email I was told I had not cancelled it, there was “nothing they could do” and as a gesture of good will they would give me credit should I return. I have no intention of using this app for contraception reasons so will not be returning and the trust in the company is now lost for me. The customer support person has finally cancelled my subscription for the following year but I am out £50 for an app I have no plans to use. No idea how a business thinks it’s a good idea to treat customers like this!.Version: 4.4.8

Watch out for automatic renewalThe app is alright. Good for tracking. Be very diligent with entering your temperature. I was not going to renew my subscription just because I cannot remember to do my temperature every morning making the app useless for me. When it auto renews I was shocked and they do not issue any returns and I'm finding it near impossible to cancel the auto renewal. Didn't even send an email saying my renewal was coming up..Version: 4.7.2

It works, but so much room for improvementThe good: I’m much happier overall for not being on hormonal contraception. I’m glad this exists. I didn’t realise how bad my side effects from the had been till coming off because they become so normalised. I feel like I understand my body better which is awesome. It’s a bit scary at first but it has worked for me for the last 6 months. I don’t plan to switch back. However. The bad: the app looks terrible. It is ugly and hard to use. The way data is visualised is basic af so loads of room for improvement there. The copywriting is also terrible. Some of the messages are incredibly alarming. I had one which said i could be pregnant and needed to take a test... which is a terrifying thing to read first thing in the morning. (In fact my period came later that day, I think the algorithm was being over cautious but in this case was more upsetting than helpful). The other sad thing is that there don’t seem to be any updates or improvements in the works, so I guess we just have to make do and hope for the best. Even FitBit has launched female health tracking for other symptoms such as cramps, period flow, etc which I’d love to see integrated in NC. Just feel it could be so much better..Version: 3.0.9

Waste of Time and MoneySo many problems with this system, none of which are tech glitches. 1: The free trial starts when you pay for their thermometer to ship, but it takes 2-3 weeks to reach you. 2: Despite entering all other symptoms without fail, it still says I am on a red day every single cycle day and even once I’m entering temperatures. 3: Said it would upload my previous cycle calendars from Garmin and all permissions were given then it never synced. Finally it’s telling me I am in the follicular phase when I haven’t started my new cycle yet. 4 years of tracking fertility on my own was way more reliable and way cheaper than this..Version: 4.6.8

Unplanned pregnancy from this appSubject line says it all. I did enjoy tracking my period using the app and getting to know my cycle, however I did get pregnant, so I’m of course not pleased. The ovulation predictor must have been incorrect…. Beware! Worst part? My subscription renewed the week I found out I’m pregnant and charged me for the entire year. There should be some kind of refund if this happens. Even for part of the year, as I clearly don’t need the app anymore. Very disappointed..Version: 4.6.9 Ready for Sale

Don’t 100% TrustI think this is good to use as a guide more than anything. I definitely have noticed it give me wrong advice!!It seems to only take into account when you get your period and then guess that it’s gonna keep being the same time, i swear it didn’t even take into account my temperature this cycle. Make sure you take into account your discharge and i’m going to buy ovulation tests now as well… which might make the app more correct. DEFINITELY don’t trust this 100% because you’ll probably get pregnant. The thermometer is really great tho… Oh AND it took MONTHS for the thermometer to come, i honestly gave up on it ever coming. So that was a waste of money as i couldn’t even use the app that whole time! I ended up having to go back on the pill which i got off when i first bought the app!!!.Version: 4.5.6

Unsure About AccuracySo far, I’ve used the app faithfully for over a month. I take my temperature at the same time every morning as soon as I wake up. My temperature variation has been very low. I’ve even been taking LH tests on the days the app suggests it. Despite this, the app still initially got my ovulation date completely wrong. The app said I ovulated on July 15th, despite negative LH tests, but my temperature did increase. I trusted it and figured I would have had a positive LH test on the one day that was skipped for testing. I had green days from then on. However, I had symptoms of ovulation more than a week after—increased libido, changes in cervical mucus, etc. Once my next period came, I logged it, and the app recalculated my cycle. It’s now displaying that I ovulated on July 25th, which based on my symptoms, sounds more likely. That’s a huge difference, and the app was telling me it was safe to have unprotected sex while I was fertile. I’m going to keep using it, because it is only the first month. Perhaps the app just needs time to adjust to my cycle. Just keep this in mind if you’re using the app for the first time. Thankfully, I’m not using this as birth control yet. I’ll update if my experience changes..Version: 4.6.0

Losing interestI’ve been using this app for 6 months now. According to the app, I haven’t ovulated since May! Natural Cycles doesn’t “take into account” cervical mucus, so even though my body has had all the signs of ovulation, because “their” thermometer didn’t register a temperature jump, according to them I haven’t been ovulating. (I keep being told my temperature is “erratic” even though my measuring times usually differ only by an hour or two). This app is starting to appear unreliable. Being trained to disregard my own body in favour of their thermometer is hardly “natural”..Version: 4.2.4

Does the jobNot pregnant yet so the app does what I need it to, and I think it’s really cool to track what’s happening in my body. However when I first started this app it was so easy to use. I especially enjoyed and appreciated how well it worked in the morning when I would take my temperature while still laying down and try to go back to sleep to get some extra hours of rest. I would quickly and easily tap all the buttons, put my temp in, and it submits right away. It was so easy to steal an extra little bit of sleep. There was an update a little while back and now the buttons barely ever work the first time you press them. Sometimes I have to press “submit” 10-12 times before my temperature goes through. It’s a small issue but it’s extremely agitating especially after I’ve seen how well the app can run. I have made sure everything is up to date before writing this review. I’d be happy to change my review if this bug can be fixed. I truly appreciate the service it provides, I just feel like staring at the blue screen an extra 1-2 minutes in the morning prevents me from the quality of sleep I get when I snooze..Version: 3.4.6

Unplanned pregnancyI came off the pill in November 2020, and started using Natural cycles as contraception. My cycle became regular very quickly and I absolutely LOVED being off hormonal birth control. Learning about my body and being in control was great; I felt like this was the education I needed to really understand my cycle! However, after my second Covid jab (which I did log into the app as requested) my cycle changed and I was late on my period. It eventually arrived, but my cycle still hadn’t returned to normal. Natural cycles definitely didn’t allow for this, and I know that it couldn’t have known because there hasn’t been enough time for research, but I fell pregnant the second month. I am in a stable relationship and for us this is a very happy accident, however I can’t recommend this app if you really don’t want an unplanned pregnancy and are looking for an alternative to hormonal birth control. The moment something changes in your cycle the app doesn’t change and become more cautious!.Version: 4.4.5

Ok, too much effort, terrible website user experienceIt was too much effort for me, also I have other apps that I can already record things in it. The thermometer they sent was interesting but the problem was that it makes a very loud noise when it’s done. It’s suggested to record the temperature before moving around, while still lying in bed right after waking up. This meant if I wanted to use this, I would wake up my partner, and if you have a partner who can’t go back to sleep easily, this is a big problem. The website user experience is awful. I had to search for a long time to even figure out where and how to login so that I could manage my account! Very bad experience. I gave it 3 stars because it might still possibly work for other people, and they sent me an email reminding me about my account renewal, so I cancelled on time before wasting money..Version: 4.7.5

Bummed outI liked the thought of natural cycles when I went off of hormonal birth control last year due to depression. Over the course of the year my periods were so irregular, natural cycles couldn’t predict anything (which is fair my body was being weird), so I stopped tracking with it. I started gaining weight, growing facial hair, and has crazy acne and was quickly diagnosed with PCOS. I’ve been so overwhelmed with the diagnosis and nervous for what that means for family planning. I haven’t opened the app in months when I saw a charge pending for the $100 subscription in my account, I quickly cancelled my subscription (which I thought I had already as it hadn’t shown up on my apple subscriptions when I looked at it last month) and contacted customer support. They were not very helpful or very kind via email, I’m out the $100 and since I had already cancelled my subscription I don’t get anything for that money. I’m mostly upset at how rude they were in the email, I was hoping for some grace. UPDATE: I wrote a strongly worded email back (not something I do often and I feel a bit bad about) and have received a full refund - make sure to advocate for yourselves, this is obviously a reoccurring issue for many people..Version: 5.1.6

Unimpressed!! WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!I have been using two different period/ovulation apps to see which one was better. And my other app has way more accurate information. Not to mention it auto charged me $90…. i did receive any email stating that my free trial was ending. It also ended 3 days sooner then i started my trial !! After going thru my junk mail, i have found the email.. what kind of company doesn’t get that figured out first !! I will never be using this app again. I cannot afford a $90 app….Version: 4.5.7

Works well only if you are regularI became pregnant on a form of birth control called an IUD. I had had it for 5 years. This pregnancy ended in a miscarriage and it was incredibly rough physically and emotionally. My doctor and I were unsure of what to do when it came to birth control because she didn’t trust another IUD, and there were no other non-hormone options I preferred. I researched and came across Natural Cycles, I paid and received a thermometer. Firstly, the thermometer was a disappointment as it was the exact same one I had purchased that was store brand from a local chain. I got over it and started the process of checking my temp and recording every morning. Things because tricky as my body began to do funky things it hadn’t done before my miscarriage. I missed a period, or I was late. Six months later I ended up pregnant again, while I shouldn’t have been able to. It was a mix of my body being all over the place, and your app not knowing the situation. Now I am 20 weeks pregnant, and I had switched the app over to track pregnancy from it preventing pregnancy. How awful. I lost out on so much money for something that didn’t work for me, then I thought it should be the best pregnancy tracker and have all sorts of info because of the science aspect. Nope, none of it. I am so disappointed that I have this useless app that I paid so much for. Some of it has to do with my unfortunate situation, but not all of it..Version: 3.0.18

Great at first... but now I'm pregnantI've waited a good while to leave my review as I wanted to fully test it out. I started using this as a contraceptive and my boyfriend was dubious, but we discussed it, evaluated the statistics and he agreed. We had used it for some time and I was additionally inputting the LH data. Back in July I was telling my friend what I use, that I don't like to mess with my body and that I was so happy to find something out there that can cater to that. My friend starts telling me that she's been using it for about 18 months and thinks it's great. My boyfriend is happier that someone has been using this for that time and it's worked. Ironically, I found out last week that my friend was in fact pregnant and didn't realise, all while she was telling me how great it was. So skip forward to last night, after noticing I had a lot of pregnancy symptoms and a period that was a week late, I get two lines on the test... 'pregnant'. I will be going on the pill..Version: 2.9.4

Review on Natural CyclesGlitch in the app where it doesn’t always update temperature reading from OuraRing as quick as I would like. Sometimes takes hours before they sync instead of taking it right in the morning as it should..Version: 5.1.10

Please don’t buy this productHi - please don’t buy this product. I purchased the trial of Natural Cycles to try out the temperature model of tracking my cycle. I was tentative, as I’d heard mixed reviews, but decided petty quickly that this wasn’t for me. The thermometer was not simple to use - the screen doesn’t light up and it was always a hassle to read and input my temp first thing in the morning in the dark. Plus, too many people were getting pregnant using this method of birth control. I stopped using the product, assuming that because I had paid for the trial that I was safe after the trial ended, but I got charged for a full subscription. When I contacted customer service, they informed me that I had agreed to the fine print when buying the trial - I’ve never heard of a paid trial rolling into a full on subscription without additional consent. Furthermore, I looked deeper into the company, and found out that it is founded and lead by a white man! Unsurprising. Any company that exploits people with periods to make a buck, spearheaded by a white man is not a place I want to be. Trying to navigate the crazy world of birth control and being entrapped by purchasing a trail is scammy. Please, don’t support this company!.Version: 3.3.1

Don’t trust themI was all smiles and extremely excited about using a natural app to prevent a pregnancy! I was diligent and cautious however this algorithm didn’t work for me and the team at natural cycles were extremely rude and unhelpful. You’d think the least they could do would be to refund your subscription costs! So just a word of warning to other women out there Please know what your in for and be at a place in life where you can accept the consequences of the app not working.Version: 2.9.4

Slow delivery, I got pregnant beforeIt took so long for the thermometer to arrive the delivery service that they used is so cheap that don’t tell you when you will get it. Actually I got pregnant before that. I hate the renewal programs that makes so difficult to cancel.Version: 4.2.1

Honest, down to earth reviewHaving done lots of research after wanting to come off the pill I decided to try natural cycles. My partner and I aren’t ready for a baby yet so are using condoms 99% of the time as a precaution. I know several people who have been using an app (not just this one) and have become pregnant due to inaccuracy of info. There is a huge amount of scope for human error. Used without LH tests there is a big potential window for ovulation so, for me, it’s not worth the risk. I received a message from the app asking me to specify vaccinations for their data by using a # in my notes. I recorded a spike in my temperature but it still marked me as ovulating which changed my cycle and messed up all the accurate date. Don’t get me wrong, I quiet like the app! I feel way more in control of my emotions and more up to date with how my cycle may be effecting my day to day life and how I feel. But, do I trust the red and green day system…? Not as far as I can throw my thermometer..Version: 4.4.7

Please Read this ReviewI would be cautious about using this app. If you are someone with a really strict routine this app could work well for you. The way the app works is that it doesn’t count your temp measure if there is some reason it could be varied; so if you sleep more or too little, you have had alcohol etc. This meant that there were a lot of days my temp didn’t count towards the algorithm for me. However as I work five (5)days per week and get up to go to the gym early those days too measuring my temperature on the weekend is useless. All long weekends and vacations were out as well. The app only predicted once when my period would start. I was trying to get pregnant and I am not. This app also made the baby making very unappealing to my partner and me as it was very regimented l and unsexy. I would go as far as to say it has been detrimental and depressing. For those trying to get pregnant this app can be added anxiety. And for those trying to prevent a pregnancy life changing. Additionally the thermometer I was sent took a month to arrive so I was already one (1) month into my subscription before I could do anything and it malfunctions a lot making it impossible for me to use the snooze function on it. It also beeps randomly..Version: 3.2.4

Hate itUseless at predicting my ovulation- used it for 5 months and it never got it right. Ended up going to a fertility specialist and used scans to accurately predict. The app was off by up to a week, despite carefully following the instructions and using the thermometer. When I did fall pregnant, the app thought that my increased temp meant I had ovulated two weeks after conception, and has now logged the conception date three weeks off- so all the pregnancy tracking data is way off. No way to edit this date. What a waste of money..Version: 4.6.6

Customer Service is terribleThe app itself is ok. It’s not the best app I’ve used but it’s fine for basic cycle tracking. I used it for a couple of months before deciding to track my cycle elsewhere. Anyway, I received warning of the apps renewal in an email that was delivered to my spam, so I didn’t see it. And then I got charged for the subscription totally unexpectedly since I hadn’t used it, it wasn’t in my apple subscriptions list, and I didn’t see the email. I emailed the support immediately to explain my situation, since most apps with usually refund you if you contact within 24 hours of the charge. Not this place. They could clearly see I haven’t used their app in months. So as far as cycle tracking apps go, you could find better with people who will actually work with you should you find yourself in a problem with your subscription. It’s really a shame. I don’t even usually post reviews on anything but I’m so disappointed with the customer service. It’s really turned me off from trying this app again and truly I think there are better, more informative apps out there anyway. Don’t waste your time because you might get charged a year from now for trying it out today with no way to get your money back. I’d try Glow or Flo before trying this app. They both give you a lot more information that is helpful anyway..Version: 4.6.5

Don’t RecommendUnfortunately for me, this sounded better than it worked. Reviews were great, seems like the best way to track without using hormonal contraception. But it doesn’t work if you don’t get up at the same time every day/have interrupted sleep. The thermometer beeps 10 times (loudly). It would be nicer if it only beeped 3 times max? You also can’t read the screen unless you have a light on. Also find it annoying that every day is Red except for the days you have your period & would be nice to know you have to take a ovulation tests to make sure the temps are accurate. Think this app would be better if you could purchase a thermometer separately & had a trial period. It sounded like it would be great, signed up for a year without realising there is no refund if you decide to cancel early, waste of money..Version: 4.5.0
