CARROT Hunger for Negative User Reviews

I need help with the oppositeI love all the CARROT apps, I was hoping she’d also hate on you if you missed meals? I have i much bigger problem with not eating. Will there ever be a CARROT app that aggressively makes you look after yourself? It’d be cool to see one geared towards depression. I need to be told to get out of bed, to get sunlight and eat food and to take showers regularly. I bet CARROT would be good at breaking you out of funks..Version: 1.0.5

Don't waste your moneyDon't waste your money on upgrading can't even find the foods you buy in the shops or scan half the barcodes!.Version: 1.0

Need to be able to change unitsIt's a decent app and a great UI as you'd expect from Carrot however, living in the UK, we don't measure food in cups! Yes, it's simple enough to convert but the app only has the functionality to input to one decimal place and this isn't flexible enough. If they could add the functionality to choose the measurement unit I would start using this app..Version: 1.0.10

Nice app, bad dataLike everyone else has already said, the scanning database used by this app is useless in the UK. You're better off just using my fitness pal and syncing the data via HealthKit. Hope they improve things in future updates..Version: 1.0.1

Age RestrictionIt's a great app with a creative character, but you can't use it unless your 18 or over..Version: 1.0

Love at first, but over time it's eh.At first I loved this app, now I semi enjoy it. Once the funny comments get old, you realize this app doesn't do much. I also bought the exercise one, and these 2 apps don't talk to each other. So if I do a workout on the other, I have to manually input it on this calorie counter one. What begins to irk me are how little they give you for a few bucks... After the snarky robot comments cease to be funny you start to notice all the opportunities they use to try to nickel and dime you. So your initial purchase gets you funny comments and bare bones features... Ads still exist (another $4 to remove them), and they intentionally make the calorie/exercise input harder to accomplish (pay another $2 to be able to tap once to auto input frequent items). In the end, you'll end up paying $8 for what the app should be from the beginning. Even just $5 from the start would be better than their money grabbing in app purchases all over the place. All these 5 star reviews are probably people who haven't gotten tired of the routine yet..Version: 1.0.1

Almost awesomeI love CARROT, and this app certainly is motivating... mostly. Australian products aren't in there yet, and with the limited custom option I'm left trying to work out calorie content on the spot. When the developers can fix that aspect it'll be awesome!!.Version: 1.0.1

Needs an AuS food bankApps good but needs to have an Aussie food bank.Version: 1.0.1

Funny but incomplete and not freeHas adds but you have to purchase to do things like adding by clicking on a recent food (I can do that for free in myfitnesspal). Data base is poor. Very nice look and funny but needs improvement in function.Version: 1.0.1

Good idea, but the functionality needs improvementIt's clever to have the mechanical voice berate you for overindulging and food entry is pretty easy (barcode scan works well and it haven't yet found a barcode it wouldn't match), but activity tracking is another matter. This app syncs to Apple's HealthKit, but doesn't seem to read updates made by other apps. I log my activity in another app which also syncs to HealthKit, but this app doesn't show that activity. If I also enter it here, it will add a duplicate data point. I guess I could turn off activity writing for this app, but I'd still have to manually enter the activity I've already logged. The in-app purchases also seem overpriced..Version: 1.0.1

Could be much better...It would be better if they just let you pay for the dumb thing up front instead of surprising you at every turn with an opportunity to pay for features or pay to get rid of features. The reminders don’t show as being “on” and the fridge location thing doesn’t work either. I’m in the UK and a lot of foods don’t scan for me. What a waste. I bought this and a whole suite of carrot apps and they are all the worst..Version: 1.0.7

Needs ImprovementClearly not designed for UK people BUT I love how blunt the voice is so I use it alongside MyFitnessPal... It'd be great if I didn't have to though. Maybe in the next update they'll include UK foods?!.Version: 1.0.1

UselessWouldn’t let me log more than one food before bugging me for an in-app purchase. Wouldn’t let me enter it no matter what..Version: 1.0.7

Like it but need to edit previous dayI work nights. There is no food journal app that allows you to set the end of your day after midnight. It ALWAYS starts logging the following day at 12:00 on the dot. With other apps, I can at least edit the previous day to add what I ate after midnight or update the log when I remember. With this one, the previous day is locked for editing. So, I just remembered at 12:03 that I needed to update my food diary. Oh well… It’s unfortunate because I really do enjoy this app more than the others available..Version: 1.0.10

Another abandoned CARROT appI don’t know if it’s due to lack if use and demand but these CARROT apps are never kept up to date. So I would not recommend..Version: 1.0.1

GoodI like the app. I use the other carrot apps and was hoping something like this would come along. The only drawback is that the food database is a little poor. It may be because I live in the UK. I've found that most if the food I put in only has data for food places that don't really exist in the UK. I also find that most homemade foods are not available either. That said the app is good and I've been using HealthKit to sync my food data from my fitness pal. I would go up to 5 stars once the database for food is as good as my fitness pal and if it started maybe tracking steps like other fitness apps. Maybe another carrot app that tracks exercise like walking or even running. Imagine carrot "motivating" you to run..Version: 1.0.1

I really want to like it but it's impossible to use as someone shorter trying to lose weightThe app won't let me set a calorie limit under 1500, even though 1500 is already over my TDEE and would cause me to gain weight. i'm 4'11, the most i need a day is 1200 on my current activity level, and to lose weight i go to 1000 too which is completely healthy for someone of my height and activity level, but the app won't let me change the goal at all, so it's useless to me. i really like the design and the layout and the voice, and i really want to use it but please let people put their own calorie goals in..Version: 1.0.7

Pop up ads (aka digital finger poke in the eye)The app is simple to use - good ux. But ultimately I had to delete as the pop up ads became increasingly more intrusive, obnoxious, annoying and utterly useless. This strategy- this business model - really amounts to digitally assaulting the user. You all know what I’m talking about/ the obnoxious casino games et al - these are like the pathetic phishing email scams desperately looking for some sucker or chump who will actually be dumb enough or distracted enough to actually click through. When really many users are just plain annoyed af. I know many will respond “well they have to make money” - “they have to have a revenue model to allow for free version” “don’t be so cheap and pay for premium”. I get all that - I’ve been there. But I know that you can be successful and make $$ without assaulting, torturing and alienating users. It’s an art and a fine line. Sadly many apps like Carrot have crossed it. When I walk into Macy’s I don’t expect the store to let (nay, encourage) hucksters and con artists to wait inside the door to shove random crap in my face..Version: 1.0.2

Needs multiple updatesI’m not one to write reviews, but after reaching out to their support team with no response, I figured I’d try here so maybe they’ll listen. It won’t let me set any reminders. None of them. I was excited about having an alarm go off when I get near my refrigerator, but it won’t let me set up an iBeacon either. I want to like and use this app so badly, but it has bugs and major flaws. It needs to have the ability to track more than just weight and calories. So many people track macros these days and I think this app would be a huge hit with that ability added. Also, instead of just tracking each individual item you eat, it would be nice if you could add in your own full recipes and ingredients that are then divided into portions, like some other health apps let you do. I hope to see some improvements soon or this app is going in the trash..Version: 1.0.7

It's funny and simple. But too simple. This app is great if you are just tracking your calories on the day that you are eating day after day. It’s also funny and entertaining, and I suppose motivating. However, an email to support twice resulted in no response after a week. Also, there is no way to plan your calories a day in advance and to see your macros. so while it’s a very entertaining app and useful tool, for someone who just is looking for something simple, there is not enough meat and potatoes, if you will, to track the basic things I’m looking for..Version: 1.0.10

It works, but has some design issuesI really like that this is one of the few good tracking apps that isn’t trying to build a profile of your habits to sell to advertisers. However, the UI has some mildly abusive flaws. Certain options are shown in the UI, and even highlighted with colour (so you’re likely to click them) but require a specific IAP to use. I was happy to purchase the ad-free IAP, but every time an IAP pop up shows it just makes me frustrated. There’s also the occasional pop up to do things like share with Facebook and so on. Ew! Just get out of the way and let me log my meal. The database is OK, but I find missing items every day. It’s good enough for me given you’re just tracking calories..Version: 1.0.5

UK database pleaseThis app is quite good and fun to use but as other reviewers have pointed out the lack of UK food database and metric measurements (oz what?) makes it a bit problematic. The manual entry of every food becomes frus very quickly..Version: 1.0.1

VoiceThe voice of the person that is Tuanting does not sound right, it sounds like a broken tape in a tape player, it sounds really slow.Version: 1.0.2

Crashes :(Looks good, but crashes during setup every time, when I get to the activity level page. There is no way to progress past this page. Shame..Version: 1.0.4

I give up...I'm a long time user of the CARROT apps but in the end, you just give up. Without a UK database for food entry the calorie counting is so inaccurate it's a major task trying to stay on top of it. Entering your own calories means you miss out on other things like protein syncing to the health app. Also doesn't sync with other exercise apps like Runtastic Me - you have to enter any exercise manually, which then syncs to the health app and doubles up the data because Runtastic has already added it. I emailed the dev ages ago and was just told 'the minions were working on it' or something to that effect. The quick add upgrade is rubbish, just as quick to start typing the first few letters and the food item appears. Shame..Version: 1.0.1

Fun, but a little buggy and needs an update. This app is fun, has a good interface, and is pretty streamlined. However, there are a few annoying bugs which make it necessary to force quit the app, and it really needs to be updated to work on iPhone X display..Version: 1.0.5

Not a great startFreezes and loses everything when modifying goal during the initial setup. Hard to rate an app that can’t even get through the initialisation..Version: 1.0.5

Helps me stay on track, but needs updatesI would love to give this app five stars, but it hasn't been updated in nearly a year and a half, and it lacks some important features. For example, there's no way to build meals you eat regularly. I have a protein shake made with protein powder, powdered peanut butter, and coconut water almost every day. It would be nice to just save that combo and be able to access it instantly without having to reenter every ingredient every time. Same goes for the meals I eat regularly. It's a hassle to enter every ingredient in a meal you cooked and then try and figure out how much of that ingredient you had; every meal. Also, a surprising number of foods are not in the barcode database. I recognize that keeping that up to date is a monumental task, and not even up to CARROT, but it is still frustrating. While those things annoy me, this is still the best tracker I've used because the robotic banter keeps things entertaining and I find it motivating to get to come in and be belittled by my CARROT overlord. What does that say about me?.Version: 1.0.1

Bug?Why does it not automatically reset for the next day im still seeing yesterday’s food and exercise? when tf does it reset??? 👎🏽.Version: 1.0.10

Has potentialNeeds to improve the barcode scanner as it only works for about 5% of the food brands I eat. The databank also includes hundreds of brands I've never heard of but won't show the most common brands. For this app to be perfect they need to step up the barcode scanner so it's worth using and also improve the data search.Version: 1.0.1

Funny but buggy and annoyingOther than having full page ads that take a lot of cellular, this app suffers from some major flaws. You can't edit it, because the edits don't make it to the health kit. You can't enter data in the past. The database of food is poor, and if your use another app (mfp) it reads the data incorrectly and blows up your skeleton..Version: 1.0.1

Hilarious, but flawed. The speed, interface and pure comedy of this app make it a joy to use. However, its biggest, almost game-breaking drawback is how poor its food database is here in Canada. Many Canadian chains have menus that aren't the same as their American counterparts and it's painful to have to add in anything from a major restaurant like Tim Hortons. From a database and features perspective, something like MyFitnessPal wins hands down, but is rather boring and uncultured compared to Carrot. I'm using this app as my primary tracker because I feel it's shortcomings are going to be ironed out, and because the core experience is so excellent already. Two things are needed: 1. Match the breadth of the MyFitnessPal database 2. Allow foods to be grouped into a "meal shortcut" relieving the user of having to enter each item of a meal individually. 3. Somehow do #2 without the horrible sense of feature creep that plagues other health apps..Version: 1.0.1

Unusable in the UKThough the concept is great, which is why chose a paid app over all the free ones I could have downloaded. But the database being so tiny renders this app completely unusable, unless you have time to type in the details of everything you eat. It doesn't recognise any of the items I tried to scan, and I don't think my food tastes are particularly obscure. Life is too short I'm afraid, I will be deleting this app feeling pretty disgruntled that I can't get a refund to spend on an app that really fits into my everyday life....Version: 1.0.1

All good but food database is poor. The personality of this app is great. It makes you laugh and makes you think a little extra about what you actually put into your body. The option to add exercise activity is also a really good feature. My complaint about this app is about the food database. For instance, the smallest amount of peanut butter that you can select is 2 tbsp, however I only use 1 tbsp. It can't get really accurate like that. Plus a lot of big brand names I have used such as a variety of Arnott's biscuits weren't available for selection, so I had to research the other options and go with the one I thought was closest to the biscuits I ate..Version: 1.0.1

A bit too simple & buggy 😖Love the approach with it's fun humour and whit. Unfortunately limited food database and although you can manually input food it won't let you input anything more than the kilojoules/calories. So carbs, protein, serving size -- forget it. Also imports duplicate entries from HealthKit when other apps write data and seems to compound the total kilojoules/calories giving an inaccurate intake making it useless/angry. 😖.Version: 1.0.1

A good upcoming appI really liked the interface of the app and the idea, but I disliked how I couldn't enter my own calorie intake and the food database was really lacking as I entered most things by hand as I found the barcode scanner to not function either..Version: 1.0.1

OkThis app is ok. I actually like it much better than my fitness pal. I wish it worked better with health. I have an Apple Watch and my fitness pal would count my watch steps towards my exercise on the app. It did this with Fitbit and other wearables as well. All of which have developer packages to integrate. Further more this suite of apps nickels and dimes you to death. It's clear that the developer is more focused on the money making aspect than actually adding useful features. I'm perfectly fine spending even $10 on a quality app. I am not fine with spending that for a gold podium. Oh then also having to pay to unlock quick task features. Then pay again to unlock ads. No. I'll keep using the app because it's cute but that will eventually wear off..Version: 1.0.1

Needs UK FoodGreat app. Love the interface and the way the app motivates you. But the food database is pants in the UK doesn't recognise anything I scan. Which is a shame and is unfortunately the reason why I am uninstalling it. Maybe when the database is better I will reinstall..Version: 1.0.1

Suspicious activitySure it’s funny, but is very limited. Also the most suspicious thing is every time you launch this app you will see an iPhone notification that the app has read/copied from your clipboard - who knows why it’s trying to do that but id steer clear..Version: 1.0.10

What is this game!?When I downloaded the app, it shows a squirrel as gender, being push screaming out of a mom’s wound and more snarky messages, what the heck is this?!!.Version: 1.0.4

YikesMost people start a weight loss regimen out of negative feelings about themselves. We're so inured to abusive and cynical external and internal scripts that we think following them on purpose is funny – i.e. we're willing to give this "Carrot" app a shot. A brave name for an app that's nothing but stick. Nobody will keep weight off out of attempts to appease negative internal emotions. No matter how slick an app is designed or how into the zeitgeist it places itself. There is only one way to lose weight and keep it off: Accept and love yourself as you are now, being completely willing to stay as you presently are. Then, you must decide to lose weight for your own reasons -- ones that don't involve appeasing those who scorn you and that aren't born of a negative self image..Version: 1.0.1

Fun for a day! But this app isn’t very good.MAJOR gap to this app is that you cannot log food any other day than the exact day you ate it. There is no functionality to go back a day and add food you forgot/missed. So, if you had a few drinks and fell asleep, tough cookies - your punishment is an inaccurate log for that day. This makes the app mostly useless, because surely you can’t use it for the long without this feature. I messaged support to see if I just missed this obviously important feature, but no reply after 4 days and counting. Too bad I didn’t know about this flaw before I spent $1.99 on an in-app upgrade!.Version: 1.0.10

Good for weight lossOverall this is a pretty entertaining app to help with calorie reduction. The big flaw is that it basically is built to keep you under a calorie limit per day. That's fine if your goal is weight loss. But for maintenance, it's a bit over the top. You can be short one day and a bit over the next. There's no averaging. Also, the Canadian food database is laughably bad.Version: 1.0.1

Was a great app, but...When I first got this app, I used it religiously. I started getting frustrated when after an update, the app would crash as soon as I tried to open it. This went on for about a month, before the app actually started working again. Now that it actually works again, instead of sending me one notification asking me to log my lunch, it sends me SIXTEEN. In one minute! Every single day. Please fix this, it's incredibly irritating. Seriously, months later this is still happening every single day. I paid for your apps, I want to be able to use them.Version: 1.0.1

Reading duplicates from the Health appFor whatever reason, this app does not seem to reset itself when another app makes changes to dietary calories in the Health app. So there ends up being duplicate entries which makes Carrot angry for no reason..Version: 1.0.1

Really Poor DatabaseThe food database on this app is extremely poor - it's not yet managed to find a single item that I've searched for - either by scanning the barcode or searching manually. As others have mentioned, this may be due to living in the UK, but other similar apps don't have this problem..Version: 1.0.1

BuggyThe app keeps changing my weight for no reason and whenever i fix it it changes again also why cant you edit or add food to previous days it's so frustrating.Version: 1.0.10

CrapBought this app yesterday and loved it straight away. Then today it was reminding me to log my meals (so it knew I had completed yesterday's entries), but still only had 177 calories left from yesterday so couldn't log my breakfast without it going 'overboard'. The day just won't change..Version: 1.0.1

Changes are seriously neededFirst of all, I do like the idea of a robot that tells you things you need to know. I myself love robots. However, with this app, some serious changing is needed. For one, please stop with the constant demand for money. I understand that developers have to make a living to, but you really should not pester people so much to buy what you want us to buy. Also, we don’t need to Pay 10 bucks or more just to get the basic essentials of the app. number two, there are other kinds of diets out there rather than just calorie restriction. There is no way to track your carbs on this app so you can’t do a ketogenic diet if you want to continue to use this app. I myself am trying to focus on carbs instead of calories. I got the app in hopes that it might have actually changed a little bit since the last time I used it. Well, I am very disappointed. I think your robot needs some heavy reprogramming. You shouldn’t have to pay that much money and if you want to track either calories or carbs, that should also be a thing. I appreciate your work and trying to help get people healthy. I am sorry if I’m ranting and raving so much, but I’m very disappointed in the way this is turning out..Version: 1.0.10

Offensive and not applicable in the UKThe food database on this app is shockingly bad, it makes it practically unusable, apps like myfitnesspal are so much better than this one. I understand that the premise of the app is to give a judgemental view, however this one is just plain rude and in no way funny, for someone who wants to loose weight the app is in no way supportive and has no way to track your goals and progress. I wouldn't even bother trying this app, as I said earlier myfitnesspal is a more superior app..Version: 1.0.1

2021 reviewLets start by saying, Carrots weather app is very impressive, and while I’d like to blanket say the same here, there are many things which need fixes/updates to be a recommendable modern app: -Nutrient overviews As of right now the app is only focused on calories, which makes it extremely limited in its usefulness, despite having further details on the deeper pages for each individual diary item. A nice way to implement this would be to have the data displayed on the home page with progress bars or categories, as well a visual representation on your “future self” after multiple days logged, with the “future you” getting fatter or slimmer in response -Carrot intensity The bot right now is quite timid compared to its weather counterpart, and could use a lot more aggression, with user permission of course and possibly profanity like in the modern weather app -Visual update The app doesn’t currently match the new weather app in terms of brand identity -iPad visual support Currently the app is limited to an iPhone view, which can be fullscreened if only in the vertical orientation, for which most iPads are running the keyboard these days and even in vertical it doesn’t pad to the edges but leaves black bars and is blurry from weird scaling, even on the pro model -iOS / iPadOS widgets for adding food or your “future self” noted above, even the carrot AI encouraging a bit coy would be nice Will check this app again in a year.Version: 1.0.10

Good, not greatThe best part about this app is the ease of inputting an item. The problem is that the NutritonX index is nowhere near as extensive as something like My Fitness Pal possesses. I can find basic items but it lacks SEVERELY when searching other food items. For example, alcoholic drinks are never matched. The barcode scanner can barely find anything. Can't even find a chicken breast from Kroger. Once the database can find as much as other apps, this will be 5 stars, Until then it's just frustrating. The snark is amusing and keeps me coming back, but the functionality keeps me inputting on My Fitness Pal. To the developers. I want to use your app, please let me justify using it..Version: 1.0.1
