Carista OBD2 for Negative User Reviews

Slow AFOne time I tried to scan my 2015 VWGTI for trouble codes and it drained the entire battery. The next time I tried it took 35 minutes to get to 90% Any other app on the market would’ve scanned the car 10 - 20 times in that amount of time. It’s time to step up your game guys, wait times are an EXTREME ISSUE!.Version: 3.6

Great app but too expensiveThe app works exactly as advertised, I was able to reset my service due warning and make some customizations I never knew possible on my Audi. Great job guys! However, the only reason I cannot give it 5 stars is because of the ridiculous yearly pricing! I find this app seriously overpriced. It seems to me that for a regular user who needs the app roughly twice a year to reset some service due warning it shouldn't cost that much! Why can't we just pay one time fee and that's it?...It seems much more suitable....Version: 3.7.2

Toyota Camry Hybrid 2019Couldn’t do what it advertised being able to do. Reasonable (if somewhat patronising) communication from the developer, though..Version: 7.0.1

Annual subscription for minimal useful featuresBit ridiculous to charge a monthly or annual subscription when you’re already charging for the device. Makes it useless without the subscription that doesn’t offer that much to warrant a year or less subscription..Version: 8.0.1

A bit scammyBought this a while ago to turn on a few features in my car. Worked fine. Recently bought ‘1 month’ @ £9.99 top up to check a few faults etc. Turns out that it was a monthly subscription service- seems that the wording is deliberately deceiving. Save your cash and get proper OBD stuff that doesn’t need a sub..Version: 6.3.3

Don't update - app now broke 1 July 2023It wants us to register, if you register by email and input all info it doesn't have a button to accept / complete it so you can't proceed or use the app / subscription !.Version: 8.0

No registration availablePurchased Nexas diagnostic interface, instruction provided stated this app is compatible. I recently updated the app. I recently opened the app, was informed I needed to register it ( again) but app stuck and will not proceed to actual registration page. Can't use my tool..Version: 8.1

What happened to Code reading?Code reading used to be free! What happened? Your premium plan is a bit much just for me to clear an engine code. A $1 day pass might fly. Even then. I love the simplicity of your app. but the price change is a bummer..Version: 3.4.3

These guys are just thievesPlease be aware that these guys will charge you more than they advertise. I have subscribed to one month and they charged me for two months. I was not aware and when I tried to contact them no one was answering. Very expensive for just resetting service indicator on my Audi..Version: 6.5.1

Issues with Bluetooth on mobile and OBD deviceSince update unable to connect to device while connected to car saying hardware problem please turn on Bluetooth when it’s already on.Version: 3.6.5

Works for what I want but an expensive serviceGot a new job much closer to home so now I’m only really doing ~10 minute trips in my TDI. So I got this app to monitor DPF load and force a regen when I know I’m on a slightly longer trip. First time I was a bit alarmed as it threw up a few warning lights on the dash, but successful regen and then they disappeared, so I find it useful. That being said, the subscription cost for what you get is way too high in my opinion..Version: 5.1

Very disappointed. Want my money back.Does not do what it is advertising. Misleading! I had my doubts but gave it a go, never trust these cheap imitations. I never will. Very disappointed I did buy this..Version: 6.4

It’s ok, but doesn’t worth its price!40 bucks for this is unreal, the app it self is okay. But for the price we should have more options instead windows/lights and door to be reprogrammed. My Audi A3 could be reprogrammed on how I want to lock and unlock, windows, lights (which was cool) but it doesn’t justifies the price! It does reads hidden codes (which is cool) but again 40 bucks nahhh I’d say for 9,99 it’s okay, and they do have this price but for a week lol (see they think that this thing worth like gold). Nice try, I took advantage of the free week that they gave me and could do everything I wanted during this time. Even after finished I said ... okay I’ll buy it cause it was cool, then 40 bucks lol (nope) 9,99 per year and I’ll be here buying and also giving the 5 stars..Version: 3.8.3

Pay wall!Fairly disappointed, I gathered through the description that I could write new TPMS ID’s into the ecu. And you can… as long as you buy the subscription. Either pay $15/month or buy the full version for close to $100. No thanks!.Version: 6.2.1

Lost ProgrammingProgramming went smoothly for my 2008 Camry after paying $10 for a month’s subscription. A few weeks later my car suspiciously lost the programming after the subscription expired. I now have to purchase another month to reprogram my car. I asked for a refund to cover the cost of reprogramming but was denied. Want to like the app and dongle but it was troublesome..Version: 8.1.3

Doesn’t properly support obdlink mx+Claims to support obdlink Mx+. Latest update notes even state improved support. However it keeps telling me to update the firmware with the obdlink app. Obdlink app says it’s on the latest firmware. I would pay to use the paid features of this app but I’m not willing to pay for yet another dongle to do so..Version: 4.0.4

Subscription “optional”Subscription required to make the app useful in any way, the only thing you can do without it is see which ECU is giving faults, it blanks out the fault codes without subscription.Version: 5.5.1

Customization not workingThis app is unable to recognize my vehicle VW Jetta 2008 GLI. I can scan for errors, but when I try to customize something I only see an error that there is no customization for my vehicle and it doesn’t supported, while this vehicle is the same platform as Jetta Mk5. Please fix this issue somehow.Version: 3.9.3

Does what it says, but only minimal usefulnessFirst, it works perfectly. For customization, though, while there are probably a hundred different options I can customize, most are options I could already customize right from the car’s menus. They also include a lot of useless options that nobody would ever care or want to change. That said, I bought it to fix two issues and it was able to solve one beautifully. I used it to shut off the engine auto-off when stopped at a stoplight. For that alone, it was worth the price of the module (and I accomplished that with the free trial, so no cost for the app). The other issue I was hoping it would fix was the unreasonably loud and long warning dings when I open the car door with the car running. Sadly, turning that off (or even adjusting the volume) isn’t an option. Either way, it was worth the cost for the one problem it solved, so I can’t complain. It may be great for the diagnostic tools, but I have no need for that, so I can’t comment..Version: 3.9

Misleading free trialFree trial is misleading, when trying to access paid features there is no free trial option to select only paid subscriptions. Other than that the app works as expected..Version: 3.9.6

Useless with a TPMS on a prius.Same message for months of trying multiple parts of the app. Get a message under TIre Pressure that says “ECU Not Found”. It also says this about airbags, seatbelts, A/C, window control units.. After $60 in purchases my problems are left unanswered. Toyota wants to replace all 4 sensors and computer for 1300$, even though they NEVER hooked a machine to it. Very frustrating. As for mods to the car, the change from multiple beeps to 1 beep was a HUGE deal for me.Version: 5.4.3

Great kit, but…This is a great bit of kit, and has been great for diagnosing problems on my BMW, but there is no way to turn off the spam notifications for sales. If there was an option to turn off sales notifications it would get 5 stars, as I LOATHE having offers etc on my Home Screen. It is annoying enough for me to write a review about it, and maybe enough for me to delete the app until a problem occurs with my car..Version: 6.4

Subscription Fee ?First of all, I wanted to say that I was doing my homework before buying an OBD device to use with this app. I’ve almost decided against it. If a user wants the advanced features, there is a subscription fee that practically charges $10/month, $20/3 months, or $50/12 months. To be fair, I asked them if this app was based on cloud servers to perform its function, but they said it was to maintain and improve the app. Well, I have several other apps that serve various functions like for my thermostat, but they don’t charge a recurring fee. And considering that most users aren’t going to use this app very often at all, it’s ridiculous to charge a subscription. I was told that I could cancel every month if I don’t use it often, but then if I want to use it again, that’s another $10. Really ??? If there was a reasonable one-time fee, I would be much more willing to bite. A lot of feedback in the reviews about the subscription fees..Version: 6.5.1

Too expensive for what you getMay use it one time but have to pay a lot for it..Version: 3.9.6

Good app but limitedCovers a fair bit of VAG specific coding, but also leaves a lot out. Got the free Pro trial and made all the codings that I wanted in a day. Cannot justify recurring annual subscription costs for something that’ll barely get used. If it had real-time monitoring, e.g. DPF regens or additional gauges like Torque Pro, and was a daily use App then you’d have a winner..Version: 3.6.2

Mk6 jetta updatesNeed more mk6 stuff there's been like no updates for that.Version: 3.4.5

NOT WORTH ITCheck online if your vehicle is supported before you buy. App has let me reset fault codes p0299 etc however no support for live data (to do proper diagnostics) if you have a relatively ‘old’ car (4 years old). not worth the money at all, best to save and buy a decent reader as this is only worth it if your vehicle is supported..Version: 6.2.1

When it worksFor some reason it doesn’t connect half the time. I have to delete app and reload it then restore purchases. Then hope it works. When it does work it’s pretty cool. Customize settings for your car like windows, door locks, lights and signal options..Version: 3.6.6

Poor Business practices.I purchased the full version a few years ago, then they switched to a subscription model and I am out the original price. Neither Apple nor Carista have offered any help after much back and forth aside from giving me a free week. Dishonest business practices..Version: 6.4

I used to love this appThis app was great when you could do a one off purchase whenever you needed it. I’d service my car once a year and pay the $10 or so to reset the service message. Now the only option available is a subscription that renews every month or year! I hate this kind of sneakiness where they suck you into a purchase thinking it’s one off then they hit you up every month. If you weren’t aware of what you’d signed up to you’d be paying $15 every month! The owners are getting greedy so I’m going to look for another app. Not impressed guys. Not impressed..Version: 6.3.1

It’s an impressive scamWhat they don’t tell you when you buy the physical hardware is that a yearly subscription is $67. Not sure why they think that their app is worth that much, when there are many other better and cheaper products out there. For that price you might as well buy OBDeleven, instead of a knockoff version like Carista. Would not recommend, as the scanner is basically useless without paying for the subscription. I’m mostly disappointed in myself, since they tricked me into buying their expensive product. That part was well done..Version: 5.1

Nothing usefulI’m sure this is useful to many, but I couldn’t find anything at all that I wanted. Maybe it’s just my car, but I thought it was a waste of money buying the adapter.Version: 3.9.3

Ok before reading the terms of useThe application seems okay, but after reading their terms of use, I deleted it as quickly as I could. Quoting a section (capitalisation in the original text), read part vi: “TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, WE MAKE NO WARRANTY THAT (i) CARISTA WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, (ii) DELIVERY OF ANY PORTION OF CARISTA WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, TIMELY, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE, (iii) THE FAULT CODES, AS WELL AS THE SHORT DESCRIPTIONS APPEARING NEXT TO THEM, THAT MAY BE OBTAINED FROM THE USE OF CARISTA WILL BE ACCURATE OR RELIABLE, (iv) ANY ERRORS IN THE SOFTWARE WILL BE CORRECTED, (vi) ANY PORTION OF CARISTA OR ANY OTHER APPLICATION PROVIDED BY US WILL BE OF SATISFACTORY QUALITY, FAULT OR VIRUS FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED OR SATISFY ANY CONDITIONS OF QUALITY AND FITNESS FOR PURPOSE. GarbageThis app is trash, my sunroof stopped working properly since I used it. Never buy !!!.Version: 3.7.4

It’s ok.It’s ok- I’ve use this on a BMW 520d. There is just not enough options for BMW for £31 a year. £31 is expensive. A DPF regen option would be a great for BMW and the live date should be able to access BMW. (I have free car scanner that can do it) My biggest issue is that I’ve toggled (on and off) an Air Conditioning option within the customize section on the app. I’ve now inadvertently turned off my air condition system and it will not turn back on. I have contacted Carista but with little help or assistance..Version: 5.5

CaristaI have used it on Ford, Mini and BMW and has been able to erase 90% of fault codes. However no customisation available for BMW and Mini which is disappointing, when it’s a listed feature..Version: 6.6

Changed available servicesPurchased with the ability to read the codes from the device. Making programming changes was extra after the trial period. Two years later the device is useless unless you purchase their subscription. This is not what was advertised when I purchased the device. I should be able to read the codes. Now just get Oxxxx. Doesn’t seem right that they would remove the available features (codes) you paid for after the purchase of the unit and require you to purchase what was available previously for free..Version: 6.1

Automatically bills for subscriptionWhen you opt for the free trial of the premium features it automatically signs you up for a paid subscription at the end of it. The first you notice if this is when the payment is taken (£34). Complained through Apple and was told that the subscription was not eligible for a refund. It was very underhand and very sneaky..Version: 3.7.5

Used to be greatThis dongle/ app used to be wonderful, showing diagnostic codes for free and then charging for doing customizations. Just looked at a car and went to scan it, now they don’t show diagnostic codes unless you pay!? Can’t find a way to pay through the app so couldn’t check the codes and left disappointed. Will be purchasing a different dongle..Version: 6.2

Carista - Catch 22Catch 22 - In order to use the Carista adapter, you must suscribe to the introductory offer, which is 1 month free, but by doing that your suscription will renew at $52.99/year unless cancelled within 30 days of the « purchase ». Problem is that the provided link to the Carista web site, that should allow you to cancel your suscription does not allow you to do anything...!!!.Version: 3.8.4

Audi Q5 FY 2017+Bought this thing over a year ago, Audi FY 2017+ years as not supported at the time, which I knew and it was okay. Used it a few times during trial and emailed the guys about the supporting 2017+ Q5 and they said they’re working on it and stuff like that. Yet we’re still waiting for support to come out after a year and a half... and still nothing. I emailed them once again and they totally changed their mind and said they’re not gonna work on it any time soon, BS!.Version: 3.8.1

Readiness monitors gone in latest update? This app has been pretty helpful in quick diagnosing of codes in my modified cars, I have a unit permanently in all 5 of my vehicles just so I can keep an eye on things in real time should the CEL ever come on. I have noticed since the last update the Readiness Monitor check that used to show up at the bottom of the Fault screen after doing a scan is now gone, which ended up costing me $21 for a Ny state inspection that I didn’t know the monitors weren’t ready for. Please fix!.Version: 3.6.3

Sneaky tacticsQuality application but the subscription for a year states one month free. So should be free then charged after a month, but sneaky tactics are you don’t get your free month. They take payment straight away & Apple being Apple block the refunds! Thief’s would be being nice to them!.Version: 3.9

Don’t be fooled!Requires subscription for individual use. This used to be decent but now requires subscription. Now I regret previously buying the OBD2 Carista device. I use it for my personal car(s), not as a commercial tool; there’s no reason to charge a subscription fee for this. And a one time fee for $10/month is too expensive. Bought their hardware, now they’re trying to get even more money out of you. Shame on them. Just greedy. There are better free options out there for diagnostics and much cheaper generic OBD2 devices. Don’t be fooled! Do not recommend, and will not support future devices/services. ——- I suggest making this completely free for up to 2 cars per year. Your ratings and downloads will go up, and users who will actually get use out of it to be worth the subscription fee will rise as well..Version: 4.0.6

Can I get help, I’ve been charged twice !?Went to download app/ weekly pass and ended up being charged twice and now don’t know who to talk to or who to phone !?.Version: 3.6.4

Avoid, rip off charges for service functionsDon’t mind paying a top up for extra features, but a one off would be fine. This is a subscription service. Just buy a stand alone unit, and save yourself the hassle..Version: 5.1

TerribleBrought this unit I have several cars from modern to slightly older Fiat BMWs Audi Pergout and Mini and brand new Vivaro van after plugging in the unit gave very little information about the cars just emission info and all functions where not available or supported very dissapointed really is over rated and badly advertised as a wonderful unit that you can access all options one of the cars the Audi it didnt even reconise the manufacturer. I wont be subscribing after the free trial ends with unit sorry Carista the unit gone in the rubbish bin where it belongs..Version: 7.0.1

Watch out for recurring monthly fee.I did not sign up or notice when I purchased this product that they would then bill each month thereafter for a recurring service. Watch you accounts closely with these people. The product did do what it was supposed to however..Version: 6.1

Get a Vagcom 401This app wants way too much money for basic functions. Get yourself a 401 VAGCOM and save your money..Version: 5.0

Nice app...Need further q5 features enabled.Version: 2.6

Subscription needs to be reviewed.I have used this device for month, it is great app to diagnose and clear codes when required but one thing which not it good with this is yearly subscription. I don’t understand why they charge every year. Why can’t they make one off payment for it to work for life..Version: 3.7.5

Not user friendly or flexibleI bought the dongle and never got my month of free service. Further more there is no option to buy anything in the app. ~~Please add more buying features to the app in the menu!~~ You Carista devs don’t seem to realize that you would get more consumers if you made an option for some features available with one single purchase. Like one car company only with single purchase. The monthly payment shouldn’t be the only option. And paying monthly just to be able to adjust my seatbelt light flashing is downright ridiculous!! ONE STAR until this app is overhauled. There are many better apps out that offer the same stuff but cheaper or free..Version: 3.9.7

Very disappointed in the removal of WiFi adaptersI used to love this app, and was an early purchaser, but now will have to find something else. First it seems I can’t use the app without making some kind of app, and I don’t seem to be able to restore my original purchase anymore. The removal of WiFi adapters is really annoying though, and I can’t seem to downgrade, just recently this app was working fine with my purchases and my adapter. Overall very upset, I guess I’ll have to find something else now if I can’t downgrade..Version: 8.2.1

Not impressedWill not connect to any in app feature, won’t load past 5%. Brings up an error about the car not being compatible when it has been confirmed on the website and in writing that it is. Car is a Audi a3 8v 2014.Version: 3.6.7

More vehicles customisationNice app but I have a Ford and I bought the OBD 2 to customise my fiesta but it says it’s incompatible. Is there a way for you to update and allow this ?.Version: 6.1

Too Expensive! As a (former) retail software developer, I understand why devs are moving toward subscription models. But $40/year is too expensive for what is generally an infrequently-used, casual-use app. None of the other apps I subscribe to, like RoboKiller and Overcast to name just two, cost anywhere near as much and I use them *far more often*. Overcast could quadruple its subscription and I’d still pay it because I use it heavily – hours per week. Its use:cost ratio is very favorable. But Carista, not so much. I’d probably use this a few times per year, that’s all. Very unfavorable use:cost ratio. Carista, as I understand, already discourages commercial use and “oversharing” by limiting the number of vehicles (by VIN) that can be tweaked. I’m fine with that. I just want to tweak our two cars, that’s all. But I want to revisit my tweaks occasionally. Offer a $10 or $15(tops) per year sub and I’m pretty sure the developer will see many more annual subs. I would sub for that. $40 is a lot for a seldom-used app. $10 or $15 isn’t. And I will not pay $10 for one week, either. That math is even worse..Version: 3.8

No iTunes, no functionI bought Caristas dongle. Have tried for a week with several emails to make changes to the seat belt dings. The app stalls every single freaking time and says can’t open a payment in app, so NO freaking functionality. What a Sheety system and so far a waste of money buying the dongle. I’m po’d. And NO I don’t want an iTunes account. Jeez take a bank card like everyone else..Version: 6.5.1

2015 Toyota 4RunnerI have a 2015 4Runner, options are limited to seatbelt chime on/off, eco mode on/off, and 3 HVAC options. For some reason, no power window control, or any of the other cool features other users have shown possible..Version: 7.5

DisappointingI purchased the OBD2 adaptor and used it once. It reported that all the running lights of my car were faulty, when they were all working correctly. It also failed to reset the engine warning light, produced an error internal to the app and requested that I send a narrative error report to Carista. I am disappointed that an app this costly and its associated device do not work out of the box. I will be returning the device for a full refund..Version: 3.8.3

Purchases Don’t WorkPaid £9.99 to renew my subscription to force a regen, which I have done before with no issues. But now, no matter what I do, the app will not register that I have paid. When I try it takes me to their plans but won’t actually load them. Trying to restore purchases doesn’t work, it just endlessly loads… useless. Basically stolen my money and I get nothing in return. Thanks Carista! Sort it out..Version: 7.0.1

Thank you ‘rackintosh'Thanks for the ‘heads-up’ - take-away is, approach App Updates wi a degree of skepticism!!.Version: 3.4.3

Worked twice.Worked twice. Even with active subscription. I couldn’t reset. I had to take to a garage and rest. Useless.Version: 5.0

Not as advertisedNot as advertised.Version: 8.0.2

UnfortunateI brought a WIFI ELM, like it said in the app it works so- I thought why not, i got one quite cheap. After getting it and plugging it in the app can not connect at all, I get stuck on around 25% on the fault check, and don’t even get past 0% on the customisation. I’ve tried it in other OBD apps on the store and it loaded up fine and showed all the information. Could this be an iPhone X issue?.Version: 3.6.4
