Blue Apron: Meal Kits for Negative User Reviews

Good product, abysmal customer serviceOkay, so the positives are what everyone already knows. The food is good quality and the recipes are simple but tasty. Here is the bad: There is no “pause” button for anything indefinite. You have to manually skip, week by week, which can be a huge pain. Sometimes the skip button won’t work and you’ll get billed for orders you don’t want. There is no way to cancel this, and you’re not given an alert as to your deadline to skip things you don’t want. And once you get fed up with all of that, there’s no way to cancel the subscription in app! You have to call. I can’t see any technical reason why these features can’t be integrated into this app, so it really feels like intentional oversights. As much as I genuinely like the product, I have no plan to continue giving money to a company with such awful customer service (or at best, a horrible app development team, which I think is incredibly unlikely). This has been a very upsetting experience..Version: 2.11.1

Good food/Meh serviceOut of three boxes, all contained meals that were good to great. Two arrived late, however, so I wasn’t able to use all the meals and didn’t want to bother with seeking a refund. My real issue started when I tried to reschedule my delivery date from Monday to Sunday; it was a debacle. Although the app says your delivery choices run from Sunday to Saturday, their week really runs from Monday to Sunday. So when I switched from Monday delivery to Sunday delivery, they cancelled the Monday delivery and didn’t schedule a delivery until the following Sunday—leaving me with no food for a week. But then they kept the old Mondays scheduled too! So I had food being scheduled to arrive Sunday followed by another delivery the next day. Customer service was not helpful. The concept is great; the execution needs some work though. Too bad because the food was good..Version: 3.137.14

No ValueI’m truly confused on where people are finding value in this service. It’s cheaper to shop elsewhere. It’s more convenient as well. The meal options aren’t particularly quick to make. If you want to set it and forget it and simply allow the service to pick your meals, you’ll end up with the cheapest option they can provide. For example, I let it auto pick my options one week and they sent me a pasta dish that should have one of two meats, without the meat. Why would you default to the alternative vegetarian option if I’m not on a vegetarian plan and have ordered meat dishes? Lastly, I don’t find the dishes particularly healthy. It feels like they overcomplicate some dishes so you feel like the service is more worthwhile (because people might question the value if they were sent a dish with just a few ingredients which would be easy to shop for on your own). But in doing so, they’re adding so many calories to dishes..Version: 3.182.16

Food consistently rotten or missingTried to cancel after the veggies we got were brown and mushy and/or meat had ripped packaging (aka not safe to eat) five weeks in a row. They make it very difficult to cancel. Every time I tried I was ~*mysteriously*~ logged out. Feature or bug? It’s not clear. Like others have mentioned, Blue Apron will not refund you for spoiled food. They keep offering you gift cards that will cover at most 20% of another order. When I said I don’t plan to order again because the quality has gone way down hill they refused to refund me for the spoiled, inedible food they mailed me. :) cool. If I’m paying a huge premium for the convenience of having food delivered right to my door and every week something is spoiled and I need to go to the grocery store, how do you possibly think reimbursing me for the money I spend at the grocery store is somehow fixing the problem? I literally paid you 5x specifically to not have to go to the grocery store. Not at all impressed with the customer service..Version: 3.139.2

Gone Downhill FastWe had the Blue Apron service for over a year. At first we liked the variety, getting precise quantities of ingredients and the flavor was generally good. But in the last couple of months, things have deteriorated. First was when all the vegetables froze during cold periods (cold but normal winter weather for Chicago). The mushrooms were so solid the could have been used on a pool table. Then the delays started happening. Shipments wouldn’t arrive on time. Coupled with the less cold but normal winter temperatures, we again received frozen vegetables (bok choy doesn’t do well frozen). We also received ingredients that had been unsealed at some point in the process so we were afraid to use them. Then we got moldy cheese. The last straw was last night’s delivery that didn’t come last night. It was supposedly delivered today at 12:09pm but when we went outside within an hour, no package. I hope the delivery guy enjoyed my $90 of food. Subscription cancelled as of today. Something is amiss with BA quality control. Hope they fix it but I’ll never know..Version: 3.199.15

Insanely hit or missAmazing recipe IDEAS and general flavors, but the written recipes are normally so sloppy or if followed exactly will result in a terrible outcome. You must have some knowledge in the kitchen for for this delivery service to be at all plausible for you, because you often have to improvise around their inadequate instructions or ingredients. Speaking of ingredients, there is ALWAYS at least one ingredient missing, rotten, or otherwise unusable (looking at that nasty, rubbery tilapia and tough steak) in each box and nobody at the company will do anything to remedy these problems. Most recently, weeks after I’d confirmed the recipes in an upcoming order of mine, I went to check it (out of habit?) and it had changed to three recipes I did not want without notifying me. Thank god I had checked in time to cancel the order, because upon further inspection, almost all of the recipes offered for that week were suddenly “sold out”. Sold to who? I’m a paying customer, a subscriber to the service who confirmed my order, and for whatever reason they’ve been sold to someone else without any notification asking if I’d still like my box despite the fact that I can’t get any of the meals that I wanted? What a nightmare. Most likely making the full switch to Home Chef soon if all this trouble continues..Version: 3.4.0

Not good. What started off as the go to meal delivery service has taken a turn for the worse. I used it years ago in another state and was thrilled with the service and innovative recipes available. After getting an offer in the mail, I decided to try them out again, but I was sorely disappointed. The first delivery was delivered a day late. The second delivery was then canceled by blue apron. We are now on week three and the delivery was said to be shipped and delivering today. After not showing up, I got an email at 5pm saying that it had been delayed again. On top of the inconvenience of having to scramble for dinner tonight, I have been let down with the choices now available. What used to be exciting dishes with flavors from across the globe has become cheap and mundane. I have tried out other meal kit deliveries, and your money is better spent with pretty much anyone else..Version: 3.45.15

Scam or really bad developersThis site is either a scam, or written by really bad developers. We were given a gift card to try this service. It said in the info that we did not need to supply a credit card to try it. After multiple tries with both the website and app (working with a customer support person on the “chat” who kept telling us to click on buttons that didn’t exist) we think we had an “order” placed. Three days later our account is canceled and the gift card no longer works! We were told that the account was canceled because we didn’t put in a credit card (which the site specifically said we did NOT need to do). They re-activated the gift card, AND we put in a credit card number, but it was impossible to tell what would be charged, if the gift-card was actually recognized and going to be used, etc. There seems to be no “account” information anywhere in their system so you never know what you are actually going to be charged! So, to us, this seems more like some kind of scam so we just canceled our account and are closely monitoring our credit card for unauthorized charges..Version: 3.125.2

Do not sign up!!Do not sign up for this food delivery service! They will take your money and not help you when THEY make a mistake. They charged me for a delivery that was canceled, as soon as I saw this charge I sent an email informing them of the mistake. They then tell me “ok well thank you for letting us know we need more information.” After they receive said information they do not respond to me emails until 2 days later and proceeded to tell me they can’t do anything about it. Not to mention the meals they sent were not anything my family would eat. So I asked if they could at least change what meals we would be getting. Nope they wouldn’t help at all. So then on top of them charging me for an order that I did not want, it overdrafts our account and we end up paying 140$ for food no one would eat. Do yourself a favor and do not sign up for this service. There is more than one company to provide this service that I’m sure cares about their customer base than Blue Apron..Version: 2.5.0

Not so “fresh ingredients* & Bad customer serviceSometimes when I ordered food from blue apron it was good or just ok. But sometimes it wasn’t such as receiving spoiled tilapia or like my last order had the ponzu sauce spilt all over the bag and all over other ingredients when it arrived ruining the entire meal. When I voiced my concerns to customer service they refused to issue a refund and said I could receive a credit towards future orders. I said no thank you, I don’t know when I’ll be ordering again and would just like a refund, they still refused. If I were to buy defective or spoiled food from the grocery store they would give me a refund with my receipt if that’s what I wanted not a gift card, and for this I cannot give blue apron a good rating. A customer should not be forced to get a gift card for defective food they should get a refund if desired within a reasonable amount of time. I was forced to purchase and for this I will not be ordering from blue apron again. I feel it’s dishonest business practices and stealing from my credit card..Version: 2.64.0

HorribleI was very excited about using Blue Apron. However, I was a member for four months and every shipment had an issue. These included gel packs leaking all over the ingredients (the gel isn’t food safe but they don’t tell you this until you report it), lost shipments, shipments arriving days ahead of the scheduled arrival date (so I wasn’t home to receive them), ingredient/dish substitutions without asking me first, etc. Whenever I reached out to their customer service, they would send the same template response that they’ll let their quality and logistics team know. I wanted to enjoy this because the idea was perfect on paper for my lifestyle (I like to cook but have little time to plan meals and purchase ingredients) but the quality and customer service are extremely low. Save yourself money and headaches by using a competing service or delivering ingredients from your local supermarket. I hope this review helps..Version: 3.129.6
