Sid Meier's Colonization for Positive User Reviews

Needs a few things worked on but great otherwiseThis is a great throw back to MSDOS based games. The only issue is how the keyboard overlays the screen but after a little while you get used to it. I wish they were able to use the keyboard attachment for the IPad Pro. I would rate 5 stars when that is updated..Version: 2.4

Great except for the controlsPerfect port of the game onto the iOS platform. My only complaint is the controls. It does take a long time to figure things out and is frustrating at times. Fix the controls please. Love this game. I hope to se a Master of Magic port happen in the future..Version: 2.4

Excellent game then and still is now.. great depth, mechanics and advancement..Highly rate this, if you work out the controls. its exactly the same game as originally released.. so if you want a manual, go online and search for the original pdf players guide..Version: 2.4

SnapHMU on snap @awsommguy.Version: 2.4

Great old school gameGreat game from the 90s. The only problem with it is interface. The game uses a simulated mouse and keyboard for controls. I got used to it after about 10 games..Version: 2.4

I’m all about it!!!This game is one of my favorites from back in the day. I see all the negative reviews and I’m my opinion they just don’t want to embrace the keyboard. When I played the original it was all about using the keyboard, mice were new at the time. It would be nice to be able to increase the transparency of the keyboard though. Everything else is perfect..Version: 2.4

Almost thereBeen waiting for this for ages It takes a while to start and it's a bit clunky at first but once you get used to the tricks of dragging this game is great If you can make the starting of a new game quicker you would get 5.Version: 2.2

Love itThis is the same Sid Meier's classic that I enjoyed playing in my childhood in 94. The music is the same but of a lower quality , and the buttons get a while to get to know which is why most people here gave the game negative review due to frustration. The game should come with a page of instructions on how to use the new controls on iPhone. It's very playable once you know what you should be doing. to load /unload cargo ,select the cargo with your finger then select the keyboard and use + or - . To move across terrain just press on the square you want to move to and hold it then release. To check a square click on the brown board on the right side of the screen until a flashing square appears, then touch on a terrain then press f1 for info on the terrain, but don't click on a city directly with the flashing square that'll take you into the city. Instead click on a terrain next to the city then choose the keyboard and move the square with the arrows to the city , then select A to get a list of the units that you want to activate that are stacked in the city. Hope this helps . Enjoy the game it's lovely and addicting and the best way to pass time during long flights..Version: 2.4

A Great Game -Love it!I will admit that it takes awhile to figure out and get use to the controls but it is 100% worth it - I am totally addicted AGAIN I remember playing this when I was a kid. They don’t really make a lot games like this anymore it is complicated you have to think and contemplate so many different variables. The game plays out slowly over time instead of bam bam bam, which is a nice contrast to the contemporary games I love. I really love it and am so glad someone adapted it to phone/iPad. I would love the controls to be a little easier but you do get the hang of it after awhile and I almost like the throw back nature of those too. I wish there were an easier way to keep track of things and jump from colony to colony. There might be I seem to discover new tricks all the time. So don’t give up on it bc the controls are complicated and frustrating push through -look up control short cuts online. If you played this way back in “the olden days”you won’t be disappointed just impressed with what a great it always was and still remains..Version: 2.4

Update iOS and reboot and the app will work!Update iOS and reboot and the app will work!.Version: 2.4

I love this deeply problematic gameI played this in middle school. I rediscovered it a few months ago and have played way too much of it. But I also discovered that it is deeply problematic and now I feel guilty for playing it. This is a game in which you establish missions to win Indian converts that are only able to do physical labor. Dang. Play this because it is fun and addictive, but spend some time meditating on the plight of Native Americans in this country and maybe think about doing something to help right this historic wrong..Version: 2.4

Good portIt’s a straight port of colonization. A lot of complaints about the touch controls in here but it’s really not bad once you figure it out Tap = right click Press/hold = left click (“go to” functions and all) Press/hold, then with second finger press and drag = drag and drop The virtual keyboard isn’t ideal but works fine, especially if you learn to use the touch controls primarily.Version: 2.4

ColinYou need to persevere with the controls and keyboard overlay. Once you get the idea it is a brilliant conversion to iPhone..Version: 2.4

Ok it now works on ios9 So I can re review!Loved this game and still do, took a while to get to grips with the keyboard interface and controls now I've got it working like a dream and enjoying it all over again! Would like to be able to drag/drop cargo as currently I can only use L and U to load unload cargo which adds and removes the greatest value cargo so sometimes I'm finding myself loading food to take to Europe just to get at the small amount of rum I've made. Also on the keyboard I can't seem to get a diagonal move, I've either not found it yet or it's not there. All in all thou I'm enjoying it!.Version: 2.2

Great gameI really enjoyed and really appreciate it, next please bring “ Mad-Tv” to ios.Version: 2.4

Very goodYou can drag and drop. On iPad you tap and hold on the item you want with left thumb, then keeping it pressed down you use right hand and one finger to drag the item into your ship or wagon, then just let go..Version: 2.2

Great game, controls fiddly. This is a faithful port of a fantastic game. If a bit of a lazy port. However the controls are very fiddly. They do work, but some of the two fingered features took me many hours of playtime to figure out, like cargo, highlight with press and hold on the mouse cursor, and drag with 2nd finger! I found this by accident, game is almost broken without that bit of knowledge. Once you get to grips with it though, it’s a great, fun game..Version: 2.4

Awesome Nostalgic GameThe courser isn’t intuitive to play game. The learning curve is steep to figure out how to do the finer points like buying/selling anything less than 100 units. After a few hours you’ll be as fast as running it on a PC..Version: 2.4

Same as the origionalThis game is great, the playability though makes it difficult due the touch mouse. Would be great if i had a bluetooth mouse to connect. This is the DOS version of the game set to run in iOS, which is what i wished civilization was. It is a very long game and would recommend reading a guide online. Also you can find quick commands for the keyboard so you do not need to use the mouse so often. You must use the popup keyboard to control movements and use the hotkey commands. Settlers: p=plow/clear land, r=build road B=build colony In europe or in colony w/boat: l=load cargo, shift+l=load cargo w/choice of how much cargo to load. If you go to the internet and review the hotkeys used on the pc version you can play this game much more easily. Touch/slide mouse control and holding mouse acts as a click..Version: 2.4

An old favoriteBasically the old PC game, toggling to bring up an on-screen keyboard. Still fun, and now much more portable. One star taken off for lack of user support/instructions. Thanks to Makamlar for directions on how to move cargo!.Version: 2.4

Exactly like the original 👌Ok there’s a few bad reviews here and I’m not sure why? Yes the controls are slightly fiddly at first but once you get used to them game play is brilliant. Ignore the bad reviews guys, they must be old as it’s simply ‘not that hard’ to figure out. Classic game, much love Sid 5 ⭐️.Version: 2.4

Give it a shotThis is a great economic game that is well worth your time and rewards effort and experimentation. Firstly, don't expect the app to work the second you download it. I had to leave my iPad overnight and it worked fine in the morning. Second, although the keyboard controls are a pain, they are not broken. You can use them to move units diagonally and you can select goods and load them with the + key rather than relying on "L". It does help, however, if you have played the original!.Version: 2.2

Playable but controls leave much to desireThis review rates the work of the app makers since this is a verbatim port from the 1990s PC game. As others noted, mouse control is very basic and many in-game operations are quite awkward compared to the original PC version. A Colonization newbie would have hard time figuring them out. What could be easy to do for developers, is to add at least support for a Bluetooth keyboard, would have made a difference for me. So I give three stars for good intentions and one extra as the app is priced very reasonably..Version: 2.4

A great game a poor portThe game works as advertised, it's a port from dos, I personally love this game and am willing to put up with the port gaps. Im on ios8.4 No crash issues, can get around a lack of keyboard using goto, click and drag needs to be mastered, but works quite well (hint - you need two thumbs). The only thing you can't do is shift drop stock to cargo. So only full qtys or lots of 100. Guys thanks for porting this it made my year. PS no in app purchases !! Brilliant..Version: 1.6.0

Good first attemptThe idea of porting some of these old classic pc games into iOS is brilliant so I hope we see more of them become available in the future. Fantastic that they've started with Colonization as well. It doesn't work well on my iPhone and takes too long to load into the actual game. However, it's a lot smoother on the iPad (mini 1st gen) and have already enjoyed hours of the fantastic gameplay Colonization was renowned for. You do need to get used to the keyboard UI but this is a small price to pay to have access to this game on your tablet..Version: 1.6.0

It’s exactly the old pc gameSo yeah controls (specially moving) can be a nuisance. That being said you need to use all the short cut keys won the keyboard provided to make it more streamlined. How to load unload stuff from ship to port or port to ship. Hover over the crate space and click “u” for unload or “L” to load items into it. It could use improvement in the moving, maybe an option that doesn’t require you to use the mouse, i mean come on developers it’s an app, i appreciate it being just like old one but there’s room for improvement given the new format. I used to play this game so it’s nostalgia for me, a new player may not enjoy it as much or would have a more difficult time figuring out the controls.Version: 2.4

Great job!Once I learned the controls and how they work I was completely hooked on this classic game again! It’s just as good as I remember! The only thing I would suggest is a tutorial on how to properly work the mouse. That way all the people that get angry about the controls can rate this game higher..Version: 2.4

So goodThis is one of my favourite games, it’s great having it on the iPhone. Yes the controls aren’t perfect without a mouse but it works well once you get used to it..Version: 2.4

Yes you can!!Excellent game. Good port :) Yes you can move diagonally: (Press fn on the keyboard) ↗️ pg up ↘️ pg dn ↙️ end ↖️ home Yes you can load different amounts: 1- open keyboard 2- press and hold 'shift' with you left hands index finger. (Do not let go of the screen or move your finger) 3- double click and hold on the item you want to move with your right middle finger. (Do not move this finger or let go of the screen) 4- when the item has become the mouse and started floating (if not repeat step 3) use your right index finger to drag the item to your desired location/ship/wagon train/colony/Europe.Version: 2.2

Download the manual online-then the controls make senseIf you are not familiar with late ‘90’s computing you will be reminded the controls then were like playing a piano. Intricate and arcane. Mouse AND Keyboard. Search online for Downloadable manual and read it from abandonware sites. First 3 pages are on controls. Uses ALT key a lot. Works better with a Zagg folio keyboard but not for arrow key direction. Stylus helps. Good on a iPad. iPhone would be hard. Great escape and still immersive after all these years. Definitely worth contributing to Sid’s retirement fund! Would Love to see Original Civ as well. Still fun. Go Pixels!.Version: 2.4

UnplayableI should have believed the reviews and saved £2.99, the game works but to control it you have to use the on-screen keyboard (which covers the lower 1/3rd of the screen) and whilst you can touch to move the mouse pointer, I couldn’t work out how to drag and drop, which makes the mouse useless. How long can you tolerate playing the game using the keyboard short cuts?.Version: 2.4

Amazing!I have played this game since my teenage years and can confirm the controls were an issue to begin with. One you have got used to them the game play is just as I remember and far easier to play than loading up dosbox on the pc! Persevere with it and it will become second nature..Version: 2.4

Incredible...on the right platformI originally posted a 1 star review because I couldn't get this to work properly on my first generation iPad Mini. However, I downloaded it on my iPhone 6 plus and have to say it works like a dream. The touch screen can lead to some frustration but that's an epidemic issue with smartphones. Apart from that it's just like the glory days on the PC. I'm hooked once again! Many thanks to the developers for bringing this back - it's a classic and has been missing for too long!.Version: 1.6.0

Game’s Good, 1 star people are badThis games is a perfect port of the original colonization game, it operates exactly like it does on PC, with the only downside being that a phone can’t properly replicate a mouse control with left and right click functions in this specific context. Its wonky to use the clicking and mouse, but unlike what all the 1 star review bombers are saying, you CAN move diagonally in this game, and the controls work fine once you learn how they work. Your basic tap is like left mouse button every time. To do things like tell your currently selected unit to move to a position, you must click AND HOLD, which has hit or miss results on the holding depending on how much touchscreens like your fingers. To move things between a boat and a colony is the hardest, as you have to click and hold on the item you want to move, then once its picked up, you use a different finger to then drag the item over to the desired spot. All gameplay elements have been left the same, the game saves work, you can sell things and buy things from europe and your colonies do all the normal colony things. One thing I want to figure out though is how to get to a map editor to make custom maps! On the PC, there is a seperate launcher on Steam to make a custom map, then going back to the main game you can pick the map you made to then play on, and I’m hoping that can be on this mobile version too, either added to this version or as a seperate app that connects with this app. TL/DR: people are too impatient to learn the controls, game good..Version: 2.4

Developers gave up on it.Great game, but unfortunately no longer updated! I wish I didn't buy it (not because it's a bad game, but because I can no longer play it)..Version: 2.4

Love this game, drag and drop tip!I have been playing every year for the last 20 year, very happy to be on iOs. Once you figure-out how to drag and drop it well done. You need to hold 1 finger press until you see the green fingerprint and use an other finger to move. Some accidental clic occurs but other else wow! Thanks so much. Next game I would like to see pizza tycoon..Version: 2.2

True to formThis game is absolutely true to form of the original. Nostalgic and truly applaud the effort. The user interface has a learning curve, but is acceptable once you figure out the nuances. Well done overall..Version: 2.4

Straight forward port. This game is simply a port of the DOS game, with no changes. Controls take a bit getting used to, but are very simple and easy to learn. The only problem Ive encountered is trying to get terrain info on an arbitrary piece of land. Ignore all of the negative posts you see. If you're used to old school sid meier games, this is perfect..Version: 2.4
