✓ What a messI bought this hoping that the reviewer who wrote about how the controls worked was right. My mistake. It's like whoever made this into an app has never tried to play it. All they did was import the game exactly as it was for a PC and did nothing to make it playable on an iPhone. What a waste of everyone's time and money. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME..Version: 2.4
✓ Just AWFULLike a poor Atari game from the early 1980s, Fine if you want to get nostalgic but utterly unplayable on iPad. Every little action is fiddley, unrewarding and unsatisfying. Sid Meier's civilisation on PlayStation is simply glorious so I did not hesitate to purchase this when I saw this but I'm left raging that I paid over 2 quid for it - I genuinely want to phone the police and report this app - please avoid it..Version: 2.2

There's definitely a bug with the load mechanic when you were loading ships and unloading them in the traditional game you could use the mouse to load and unload specific items. Can drudge through it, but occasionally it stops working altogether (especially when you need to click and drag) there are also instances where you need to click and drag whilst holding down a key (like when trying to move a portion of goods rather than the whole load) zero thought has been put into this. The game itself works well after getting used to the interface, however it is not compatible with external keyboards which doesn't make sense as the game relies on a keyboard. ✓ I used to love this gameFirstly, the graphics and sound are exactly as I remember them, which brought back a lot of memories of playing this game for almost constantly for months. The main problem is the controls. Time and time again as I'd be trying to get my pioneers to perform a specific action, instead they'd start going on a journey half way across the map. And then I'd have to wait till next turn to try and send them back! The 'touch control' -where they have tried to make it work like a mouse, doesn't work very well. Sometimes it registers as a 'click' when you are just trying to move the curser around- causing things to happen that you didn't want, other times you can't seem to get a click no matter how hard you try! Also, later in the game, the time between turns becomes so long that you forget what your plan for your units was when it comes back round for their turn again. If you can put up with the fiddly/frustrating controls and loooong waiting time between turns, it is not entirely unplayable. I managed to put up with it for long enough to win the war of independence so it can be done! But if you are someone who gets easily irritated by controls that often don't do as you want them, then don't bother. You'll take one look and never play it again..Version: 1.6.0

✓ Several ProblemsI'm very happy this game has been brought back as it was my favourite game long time back. I'm also happy it is the original MS DOS version. It is quite tricky to get used to the controls but it is possible and then it also works quite well. The main problems are that if you play the game for a longer time the moves of Indians and other nations just take ages. How is this possible developers? It should be possible to get that fast on a modern device with a game that old with basically 0 requirements. Otherwise players spend most time waiting in front of the screen. Second problem is that I have been playing a game for several days and now it always crashes at the same move - even after I reloaded the game several times. Hence I can not finish my game. That is very annoying. I suppose it may be a bug due to the customs houses I just build but that's just a hint for the developers. I’m hoping that Retrosim improve the controls – being able to ‘tap-move’ rather than ‘cursor-move’ units would make a huge difference alone. ✓ Extremely hard to useI loved this game as a kid and play FreeCol, the open source clone, on my computer. However, this game is near impossible to play. You have to move your finger to the fake mouse then use that to do anything, it’s totally unclear and difficult. You can’t just click on something and it reacts like you’d expect an app to do. The mouse is really hard to use and bizarre: why even have it? I spent about five frustrating minutes trying to move my ship four spaces and another five to move a guy ashore. It stinks. ✓ NightmareMy favourite game from my childhood - unfortunately, unplayable. Takes ages to get into the gameplay (seems to be no way to skip past the animation when leaving the port), and then the keyboard mode, apparently required to be on in order to move units around, takes up half the screen on my 6S Plus - virtually obscuring everything (map, units etc)? Also, it's the MS-DOS version with pixelated graphics that has been ported, rather than the smoother, Windows/Mac OS one (I remember both). It's a shame, I've been secretly hoping that Colonization would arrive on iOS one day, but with this crude port I'm afraid we might not get a proper conversion anymore (unless someone redesigns the game from scratch which wouldn't really be too ideal either, as the iOS games tend to have a certain saccharine vibe to them that I don't really enjoy too much myself). If the devs are reading this, it would be nice if you had put a bit more effort, please - as as of the moment being the game is unplayable and that's about it, and unfortunately I have to agree with the negative reviews all around..Version: 2.2

✓ Retro gamingA great game from my past that is just as I remember it. Unfortunately as many post have mentioned the controls are an issue. The keyboard controls do work just like a keyboard should but it is overlaid on the bottom half of the screen obscuring important information, so you need to keep switching the keyboard off and on, using touch to control the mouse pointer can be very frustrating at times and other times it works well, I'm about half through my game and now the touch control has stopped working. ✓ CrashThe app crashes on the first screen that pops up opening the app. I have an iPhone 11 Pro. I have contacted the tech support and am waiting to hear back from them. ✓ Amazing game with terrible control/interface portingAs many others have said, the UI/controls in this port are horrendous. Doesn’t even hook up to a Logitech Smart Cover keyboard and forces you to use the “tap screen to touch” keyboard instead (which then sits over the game overlay - making it unsightly and pretty useless anyway). In-game pointer touch functionality doesn’t work correctly on brand new iPad Air 3 10.5” (released March 2019) so moving or selecting or simply navigating the map is a chore. The original Colonization is one of my favourite games of all time, so it was a instant buy from me in spite of the reviews... but it’s shocking how greedy/lazy/apathetic the port devs/publishers are. Expected better considering Retroism’s involvement. TLDR; Don’t buy. Wait for UI/control updates..Version: 2.4

✓ A messColonization is a real classic game, but this transition to the iPad has been badly carried out. The problem is the controls. The key board covers half the screen, and the absence of a mouse means actions that took seconds on a PC become very fiddly on an iPad. A shame, as I am sure a bit of test playing and extra development could have sorted those problems. Don't waste your money..Version: 2.2
✓ Doesn’t work on my iPhone 8I loved this game growing up and I’m very frustrated to pay for this title just to have it crash on the quick start page. I tried re-installing and it continues to crash. ✓ True to original, but could benefit from better touch integration.This game heralds from a golden age when the player was not spoon fed everything and had their hand held like an over protective nanny. You had to work at getting the best out of it, and rewards came in the joy of setting up complex trade routes and seeing your colonies thrive as you marched ever forward to the great Declaration of Independence. This iOS port is true to the original in that it does require a lot of hard work, the interface is rough, but works well enough provided the player has enough patience. More annoying to me is the soundtrack (also true to the original with all its catchiness!) won't play at a consistent tempo. Great game for the mature gamer who has learnt that true rewards come through perseverance, but could still benefit from some interface enhancements..Version: 1.6.0
✓ So hopefulThis is horribly implemented. A fake keyboard covering everything? A mouse cursor(?) that doesn't follow your finger exactly? If the keyboard wasn't needed it would probably be fine, but you are forced to use the keyboard a lot! It is just too painful to use. Even worse is it won't work with the iPad pro's keyboard.
