Downwell for Positive User Reviews

Well Done!I'm very impressed by this game in so many ways! At first glance, it doesn't look like an enticing game in any way, and it seems like it should be played on a gaming system of some sort instead of a handheld device. But I absolutely assure you, it's marvelous! Downwell has me addicted simply because it is a one-of-a-kind app that runs smoothly and plays beautifully. The soundtrack fits the game perfectly. My favorite part of Downwell is the pure joy my fingers get from tapping on the simple controls. I don't normally spend money on apps, but this is an exception I'm glad I made. Thank you so much Moppin!!!.Version: 1.0.2

A game done well5/5 will not get boring like most other mobile games.Version: 1.0.2

Game is amazing! One minor problem howeverI love this game, gameplay feels smooth and satisfying, and difficulty feels hard, but accomplishable. One minuscule problem is a lot of the time when I play rogue-likes/rogue-lites like this, I like to listen to a podcast in the background as I go through run after run, and turning off the excellent music is possible, but there’s no way to turn off the sound effects. I realize it would be a whole thing to go and change that now, but really my only issue with this otherwise impeccable game!.Version: 1.0.72

Best iPhone game, period. Please add option to turn down sound fx!Downwell is certainly one of the most addictive games I’ve ever played on iPhone. A little tough to get the hang of at first, especially with the touch screen controls. Your fingers tend to be right in the way of where the enemies are coming from. But, it’s crazy fun and I’ve put countless hours into this game getting the skins and trying to beat my times! The music and 8-but graphics are sublime and it’s truly a full experience that is simple and elegant. I couldn’t recommend this game more. The only thing I would change is adding the option to turn off the sound effects as they can be a bit loud compared to Spotify and this is already an option in the console versions. And add more levels or a sequel, please! The game hasn’t really been updated in years because it doesn’t need to be but it would be cool to see more content with this formula..Version: 1.0.72

Good game but...Its a good game but i wish you could mute the sound because i like music and that would amazing.Version: 1.0.63

Pricy, but worth itAlthough it's a bit on the expensive side, such a small game for $2.99, this is one of my all one favorite iOS games. It's very smooth, action packed, and it keeps you interested. It has very simple three button controls, cool/retro visuals, and it's very easy to play. All you have to do is kill enemies and fall- there's not really any aiming- it's just a great game. I've always been stingy with prices, but if you aren't me, it's worth the money..Version: 1.0.2

Highly addictive play at own riskIt’s gotten to the point where I open this up instinctively whenever I go on my phone. I blame this on my failing grades, play with caution.Version: 1.0.72

WowVery, very good!.Version: 1.0.2

DownwellFirst and foremost, Downwell is my favourite iPhone game so far! I love it to bits! It would be awesome if there were new modes. Maybe a mode where you start with 4 health. Once you lose one health, you can't go above. Eg: if you were at 4, then lost one, so now you're at 3, you can't go above 3 health. A mode where you get to pick your starting gun, but can only change it after completing a set of levels (eg: Cavern). A mode where you don't have a gun, but you do have a double jump and a safety jetpack (you get a gun for the boss level). Also, I saw the gif for the no blocks/platform style, and I really, really want to play it. Last thing. Will Downwell be coming to the Mac? Thanks for making such an incredible game! I'll be playing this one for a long time! :).Version: 1.0.2

Great game but has some small issuesDownwell is an amazing game and a perfect example of a good mobile version of a game. However, the hitboxes can seem a little off sometimes and the game will often crash if you leave and come back, which can be a little frustrating..Version: 1.0.2

Best. iOS. Game. Ever?I'd long fallen out of love with mobile gaming - the free to play domination, the poorly controlling console ports, and all the broken promises. Downwell has changed all that. A pixel perfect blend of Spelunky's randomly generated dungeon platforming and Metroid's 8 bit visuals, Downwell is a twitch platformer that's so smart, so well designed, it has quickly shone as one my favourite games on ANY platform of the last few years. Miraculously the controls work better than any platformer I've played on a touch screen, and that's partly down to the fact you are mainly falling rather than progressing left to right. While there is a jump button, success or failure will be down to split second decisions on whether to shift left or right mid air, stomping on enemies, and then hovering and hopping with gun boots that only reload when you touch an enemy or the ground (a genius mechanic that is bound to be copied). At its best, the game is almost hypnotic despite being fiendishly hard, and it'll test your decision-making under immense pressure. When you die (and die you will) you start again and the levels regenerate into new pits of death you just won't be able to resist. The sessions are short enough, the difficulty so well balanced, and the progression loop that satisfying you won't mind dying hundreds of times, if not thousands. If you're normally put off by "rogue likes" and difficult retro titles - don't be - I was and this has absolutely converted me. And at this price Downwell is Downright essential and possibly the best iOS game ever made..Version: 1.0.2

Lag issuesThis game is the best platformer in recent years. I've loved devolver's work and have played way too much luftrausers. Unfortunately, this game runs at what appears to be half if it's intended speed. It has done this since i first opened the app. I'm on an older iPhone but i thought it could handle this. Pleasebring some performance upgrades. (Seriously, im stuck in a well).Version: 1.0.2

Well worth itHave put hours into it already and more comin.Version: 1.0.1

Best game everReally love it very well done.Version: 1.0.2

AmazingAddictive and infuriating. One of the best games I've played in a long time..Version: 1.0.1

👌👌👌👏👏👏💯💯❤Yes.Version: 1.0.2

Best Arcade Style IOS Application EVER.I would like to start of by saying, NO there is no story to this, this is an endless arcade shooter/platforming game so, YES of course you will love it if you like arcade games. The thing is, unlike most arcade games, there are millions of ways to play this game. No joke. The description and pictures don't serve it justice. I see a lot of people complaining about button placement, but you can simply go into options and set "Buttons" to "No". And besides, when an enemy nears the buttons, the button goes semi-transparent in that region in order to make way for the enemy. The only issue I had with this game was my own issue, the way you hold it. But ignore that! This game is great and it deserves 5 stars. I have written one review in my time and that was to get credits, but honest to god, this game is perfect and customizable down to the color of the screen. YES, tap that buy button, YES!.Version: 1.0.2

PerfectGreat mobile games are different to great home console games, and Downwell knows this. It is fabulously fun, completely addictive and one of the best iOS games I have ever played..Version: 1.0.1

Nearly PerfectMy only issue with this great game is that the controls are somewhat difficult and twitchy. Not only are they at the bottom of the screen (where you are heading), but the arrow keys are too close to each other. I constantly find myself moving the opposite direction intended when I'm caught in the game. The fire button is also too small for a quick use, and its placement makes it hard to reach at times. If the game could be played on a sideways orientation, it would deserve a 5-star rating..Version: 1.0.2

Great fun now speed issue fixedUpdate: fixed the slowness issue for earlier iPads - now you get a 5* review! Awesome at full speed. Just what I first expected, good job. Game looks great in the videos so I paid my money and opened it with excitement, but it plays in super slow motion! It's not really playable. Looks like an early spectrum game, that's fine. Plays like one in 2015, that's not fine. Wish I had never updated to iOS9, I've seen nothing but negative changes from it. Sorry to the devs as I'm guessing this is more apple's fault than yours, but this game is the most affected I have seen and you need to know..Version: 1.0.2

Genuinely fun - a delightful game! You know how great you think those games you played in the '80s were? But you know deep down that you're remembering them three decades on through the rosiest of rose-tinted spectacles &, in reality, they were mostly a bit rubbish & not particularly playable, don't you? Hmm? Go on, admit it… Well, this is how those C64 & ZXS games should've been. This game is laugh-out-loud fun at a breakneck pace & I'm missing playing it even as I hurriedly type these words. So ignore any grumpy-pants reviewers here who don't get just how ingenious & creative you have to be to design such appealing pixel art while keeping the colour palette to the bare minimum & who actually need to be spoon-fed instructions on how to play this game (you learn how to play it by, erm, playing it: fall a bit; control your fall; land; jump; shoot; collect; die; repeat; improve. It's not rocket science). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (6 stars out of 5).Version: 1.0.2

Smooth Platformer With A Great TwistDownwell is one of the most fun and addicting games I've played in a while. Most iOS games are fun at first but I lose interest after a few days. This is definitely not the case for this game. It has a very interesting way of shooting that makes it stand out from most games. It's a little frustrating when you lose your upgrades after you die but it's fun progressing through each of the levels, seeing new enemy types, and collecting new weapons..Version: 1.0.2

A level of twitch-gaming I did not expect to find on a iPhone! This blew away all my expectations of what an action twitchy game on a phone could be. With tight controls and an addictive gameplay loop, I can't ask for much more..Version: 1.0.2

10/10Downwell is a simple game with a simple control scheme and a simple goal: Find out what's at the bottom of the well. After that however, the game starts throwing everything at you. It's a game that gives you everything you need to win but the amount of effort you put into it is the difference between success and failure. I've had the game for about two months and just reached the last floor of the game...Before dieing of course lol. It's retro, challenging and fun to play.Version: 1.0.2

Best game on the AppStoreI’m killing hours with this app!.Version: 1.0.72

The perfectly designed gameA thing of true beauty.Version: 1.0.1

Version: 1.0.2

Please help mePlease... I can't stop... I just can't... Help me take my thumbs off the screen for just a moment. Please... PLEEEEAAAAASE!!! Eh, okay, another hour on the best iPhone game ever. THEN I'll stop.Version: 1.0.1

What ios games should beDownwell is an amazing, minimalist game, reminiscent of Megaman or maybe Sonic. You can jump right in or out, do a run, then hop out again, which is in essence what ios games should be. None of this amazing nextgen graphics or online multiplayer rubbish, just something fun and clever to play while you're waiting for the bus. A masterpiece, and I thank the developers!.Version: 1.0.2

A masterpieceThis game is excellent, one of my favourites games of all time. This game has an amazing control scheme and visual style. This game has no tutorial and yet, I fully understood how to play the game with 30 seconds. 9.5/10.Version: 1.0.2

Excellent GameThe best iOS game in existence, period. I’ve been playing this game regularly for about a year now and I love it more and more each time I play (still haven’t quite beaten it yet tho lol). Intuitive yet challenging, simple yet engaging. The fast pace and permadeath also work so well for a mobile game. I love this game so much. I also love just paying a flat fee and then never seeing a single ad. Such a rare and beautiful thing. Plus, I’ve played more hours and had more fun with Downwell than I have with some full-price console games, so safe to say it’s well worth the price..Version: 1.0.72

Old school, the way I miss it!!High octane, old school, 8-Bit, button bashing gameplay!! Feels like a 'PC Engine meets Gameboy' kinda thing here, and I LOVE IT. The music is awesome too. It has the makings of a really cool game. Great stuff! Keep building on it and introduce different styles of levels. That'd keep it interesting. Very enjoyable for any 8-Bit lover..Version: 1.0.2

Best Game on iOSI've had an iPod/iPhone for more than 5 years and never have I had this much fun with a game. Never have I played a more responsive and fluid game on any touch screen device. Technically, the game is nearly flawless. Downwell is an easy to learn but difficult master kind of game. It took me about a week before I ever saw the end boss and I still haven't beat him. The constant unlockables, like different play styles and palette choices leave you wanting to play more just to see what comes next. It's always surprising you, even until the very end..Version: 1.0.2

One of the bestThere are only 2 games I’ve ever played more than a month or two on iOS and this is one of them. Simple, challenging, addictive, and most importantly, elegant gameplay. I never get frustrated with the controls, rare for a mobile game. I like how easy it is to get back in to another game after you die, similar to hotline miami. No ads, nothing to buy to make the game less frustrating, just a simple, fun game you can enjoy for years..Version: 1.0.72

The best platformer/descent into hell I've played on iOS.Unbelievably brutal. Perfectly balanced. It's a nightmare and I am entirely addicted to being the coolest shooty ninja falling down bounce on heads madness thing in the world..Version: 1.0.1

Undoubtedly deserves 5 starsI was skeptic at first before I bought the game, but now that I have, I can say that it is truly worth the 5 stars and 5 dollars. Amazing detail with a great soundtrack. Plus what's more is your own music can play as the BGM just as easily. As somebody who loves customisation, I thought it was great how there are different pallets thrown into the mix. All in all an amazing game, definitely lives up to the perfect ratings.Version: 1.0.2

Great GameStaying on my phone forever, really like it. If I could change anything, I would add more simple core colors. What I mean by this is simple, in the game, you can unlock color palettes to make the colors different. The first 3 are Downwell, Matcha, and Aqua (red, green, and blue respectively), these palettes don’t change anything but the primary color. I would add more palettes, so we can have yellow, purple, orange, and pink types of these, or even a custom palette maker. I know you get Nikaido later on, but it isn’t true to the core 3 because it changes the background. Other than that it’s a great game, add a “tip the dev” in-app purchase so I can give you more money, if the dev(s) are listening..Version: 1.0.63

Top game!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎈 great concept and cool retro graphics!! 🎈 some of my fav power ups include the drone and laser sights.... particularly like the noppy as well!!! highly addictive and very replay able... 👍🏻.Version: 1.0.1

Best game EVER!!!!!!!Definitely worth buying.Version: 1.0.1

Don't buy on iPhone 4This is probably my favourite mobile game of all time, but if you have an iPhone 4, the experience is subpar. The games page on the App Store states it's recommended you have an iPhone 5 and above to be able to play it. I thought I'd take a chance and get it anyways on my iPhone 4, but the game runs at 1/4 of its regular speed (which almost makes it easier, but a lot less fun). Just a PSA for anyone who's rocking an older phone..Version: 1.0.2

One of my favouritesInstantly a fan upon download. Crazy fast retro fun, ultimate "one more go" app..Version: 1.0.1

Perfect gameJust what I've been looking for 10/10 IGN Please make more games.Version: 1.0.2

5 stars if not for annoying button lock!I would absolutely give Downwell 5 stars if it it worked perfectly. I can’t stop playing it, even though I can’t get past 2-2. I’m having a real annoying issue, and I don’t know if it’s due to the type of phone or what, because I’ve seen others having the same experience as me. There are often times when I can’t jump and move at the same time. One button works while the other does not until I tap them separately. Makes the game a lot harder than it already is. Hope there’s an explanation or it’s fixed at some point! It’s gotten worse lately, which is weird, and it’s rendering the game almost unplayable..Version: 1.0.2

Pretty sweetIt's a very solid, tight iOS game that represents everything that they should be. Makes excellent use of the screen and the graphics are pretty nice once you get used to it. It's simplicity and difficulty hides hours of good gameplay. Don't let the price tag scare you away - It's worth getting and yet another home run from Devolver..Version: 1.0.2

Completely brilliantI've bought a lot of iOS games in my time and, whilst a lot of them provide a nice distraction on the train or bus, I've never found any that I've been compelled to play at home. Downwell is the first. Since I bought it my PS3 has sat completely untouched. This game is brilliantly realised, a marvellous achievement, and the developer ought to be very very proud of themselves..Version: 1.0.1

ProblemThe Iphone 13 notch overlaps the game display. Also, when the phone is turned off, the game does not automatically pause. This game needs an update like the Apple Arcade version (Downwell+)..Version: 1.0.72

Great game spoilt by poor optimisationI love this game on PC, but on my iPad mini 1st generation the game runs ridiculously slowly, how can a game with game boy style graphics run worse than a 3D fps? A part of me thinks that apps are being made slow on purpose to make us update our devices..Version: 1.0.1

What mobile gaming should beThis game is a perfect example of what mobile games should be: they shouldn't have a million micro-transactions and have a freemium style model to them, they should be highly addictive fun like this. A perfectly crafted homage to retro games that works absolutely amazingly on the mobile platform.Version: 1.0.1

GemThis is a rare game, instinctively understood, easy to pick up yet incredibly hard to master - but you feel like you're always so close - you just know next time you can make it... The level of attention to detail is amazing, shows how much love has gone into this game. We should all buy this, play and understand the meaning of FUN.Version: 1.0.2

Great game, just fix a couple thingsPlease add an option to move controls towards the top of the screen. Falling down into things which you can't see because of your fingers getting in the way gets frustrating. Also could we have a chapter select option once we beat that chapter? I can make it to the catacombs but it'd be nice if I could start at catacombs level 1 after I die instead of starting back at the beginning of the game. Love the gameplay.Version: 1.0.2

Awesome!!!Shooting these monsters with the different weapons is way too satisfying to handle!.Version: 1.0.2

Fanatically addictively fun!Best game i've played for a long time the music is so catchy i play it on guitar the developers did a fantastic job now we need a volume for the sound and music. Other than that best game ever..Version: 1.0.2

Absolutely PhonominalEver play a game and think to yourself "This is cool, but, it would be really neat if the designers added X to a mechanic"? Well Downwell does exactly that. If you think of a cool idea that could be implemented into the game, then there's a high chance that it IS in the game. There is just so much to love about this game; from it's ingenious use of a minimalistic, but still visually pleasing art-style, to it's incredibly rewarding combos, it's just a complete masterclass of game design that needs to be taught in programming schools..Version: 1.0.63

Amazing ExperienceThis is definitely one of my favorite games ever. The tight controls, great visual style, and interesting concept make this game a treat to play. The team behind this game definitely knows how to take an interesting concept, and do so much right with it. The gunboots, for example, are something you would never think would exist in anything, but they’re applied so well that you just forget about it. The controls work great on mobile, and I rarely go in a direction I don’t intend. All the explosions feel impactful, and it’s just great to sink a little bit into each play session whenever I want to play. It’s tough, but once you beat it, you’ll feel accomplished. You’ll never have the same experience every game, and it mixes up the game all the time. I’d recommend this game to everyone, and it’s definitely worth the $3 it is. (This isn’t a paid review, I just love this game)..Version: 1.0.63

Awesome!Super impressed to see that the framerate issue on older iPads has been fixed. It's telling that a small game like this listens to feedback and actually does something about it when so many AAA games don't bother..Version: 1.0.2

Genuinely GoodThis game is super duper fun. The GunBoots are very intuitive and creative for an iPad app. Random enemies, creepy locations, and perfect difficulty make this game a really good time. Final Rating: I give this game a Dead Body/10..Version: 1.0.2

SO CLOSEI absolutely love this game, don't get me wrong. There are just a few features that hold it back from perfection. First off, there's no save feature, so when you leave the app for like five minutes you have to restart your whole run. That coupled with the fact that runs take about 30 minutes makes the lack of a save crippling. Additionally, the game sometimes crashes when you run music streams in the background. Please fix this, lovely developers. Your game is too good not to..Version: 1.0.2

IPhone XPlease please please update it for iPhone x!.Version: 1.0.2

Beautiful simplicitySuch a gorgeous little game. I'll echo what everyone else is saying; this is what mobile gaming could/should be! Just a few bucks will get you a gorgeous, addictive, polished, responsive, full featured, (and most importantly) fun experience! Definitely worth a buy, supporting games like this is important..Version: 1.0.1

Holy crapThis is absolutely amazing, worth the money. I love this game..Version: 1.0.2

Perfect Mobile GameThis game is worth the money. It's great for a short play and for longer sessions. It's one of those games where when you die it's your own fault - and you instantly have another go because you know you will do better the next time. Sound effects are great, fantastic chiptune music. Rewards (extra themes and game modes) come regularly. There's this excellent risk/reward gameplay. Do you go for combos (and extra gems)? Or play more carefully (but with lower rewards)? Note: your thumbs will be slightly in the way on iPhone. This is only a small issue. Won't run on my iPad 3 (as detailed in the game info above) and is a battery hog, so could do with some optimisation..Version: 1.0.1

Fantastic! This game is simply fantastic! It's simple, very, very fun, and addictive. No microtransactions either! The game rewards you with different styles and palettes. Not only that, the game is reminiscent of classic side scrolling arcade games, but you're going down instead of side to side. You jump into a well filled with different kinds of beasts, armed with only your gunboots. It takes a bit of time to get used to the fast paced action, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a sort of adrenaline rush. You collect gems, find gunboot weapons, shotgun, burst shot, etc, and after every level are rewarded with a new ability that is permanent, until you lose all of your lives that is. I can't praise this game enough, not only is it good for passing time, it genuinely makes you feel great whenever you get further and further down the well. Buy it! It is great!.Version: 1.0.2

WonderfulFresh, fast, responsive retro style shooter - comes highly recommended. Buy it now!.Version: 1.0.1

BEST GAME ON THE APP STOREHighly replayable, nice to look at (you can change the color palette) and easy to get into, I find it hard to find much wrong with this game. I’ve put more time into this game than I care to admit and I’ve only just beat it for the first time (great ending btw). Looking forward to hard mode. The only thing I can think of that I would change, or rather add, is a few more mods to take at the end of each mission. I found myself making the same build each drop. Other than that. I highly recommend this game to anyone considering. At only ¢99, I’ve gotten so much entertainment for the price..Version: 1.0.72

Hotline Miami meets terminal velocityWhen I get many games, they start out endearingly basic and some bloom into monstrously entertaining games. When I got Downwell I thought this was going to be a quickly boring jaunt into thumb-busting 8-bit territory. While not a strategy-rewarding life-devourer like Imbroglio, this is a fun time-waster with a novel way of making a fall down a hole appealing to roguelife players - players of those games where repeated deaths lead to better starting options. If you are looking for a soul-altering game, $2.99 is a bit of a question mark, but otherwise a fantastic job. Not recommended for slow types, but DW did help me dust my game thumbs off and get away from turn-based play for a bit. Just one addendum: while this is procedurally generated, it is an action game above all. Look up Bump & Jump..Version: 1.0.2

An Amazing GameLet me start of by saying that I love this game. Like, deeply. The pick up and play value is phenomenal, as it never requires too much of your attention. Holy crap, though. It's hard. It'll have you asking yourself "Why am I even playing this?!" before long (as you start again without thinking any further). I only withhold the fifth star because it would be the best game on iOS by FAR with only one more feature... The ability to choose a chapter after you've cleared the previous ones. Given that the games highest value to me is as a short, something to do between responsibilities ten minutes at a time game- it's painful to know I'll be back at 1-1 when I inevitably bite the bullet..Version: 1.0.2

Best well.Downwell. Best well. Get it..Version: 1.0.2

5 StarsNow, for those who don't want to read this review, I'll sum it up real quick. It's good, and you won't get bored of it. It's worth it. For those who need REASON as to why the game is so good, then here we go. Some people have rated this game poorly due to its retro graphics and simple gameplay. This game is superb, and an amazing experience. It is very polished and very fun, and that gives it HUGE replay value. The game is very big, and I don't see it ever growing old. It has simple controls, but requires a certain skill that must be developed. With the leveling system and the color pallets, this game is a fresh breath of life into indie retro a evade games. 1 purchase and boom. Infinite fun. Why are you still reading? Download it already!.Version: 1.0.2

GOTY!!!!This game is simply amazing, best 2$ ever spent in the Apple Store!!! 2015's GOTY.Version: 1.0.2

Revising my reviewI had given this game five stars earlier this year. I stopped playing this game a while ago, but then two days ago I picked it up again and it was just as much (if not more) fun..Version: 1.0.2

Amazing!Wow! Such a well put together game. I didn't expect anything less....Am I the first reviewer? That's probably because everybody else is that addicted to this game already. More than worth the asking price. What are you still reading this for? Go and buy it!.Version: 1.0.1

Bought on PS4......had to get on iPhone. Simply brilliant, so much so that I've got it here so I can practice while I'm out and about. It's SO good, simple, fiendish, tough and leaves you wanting more every time! Haven't bought a game this addictive in a long time!.Version: 1.0.2

PerfectI normally don't write reviews, however this game is perfect that I want more people to experience the joy and genuine fun that this game gives. So here's to downwell, the best game in the App Store..Version: 1.0.1

Amazing.I've reached the final boss once and died. I miss games like these where once you die it's game over, this makes you have to really work to master it and complete it. The difficulty level (even on easy mode) is hard, which makes this game fantastic. My favourite game on iOS. Thank you designers and developers!.Version: 1.0.2

Perfect in every sense of the word!Fantastic, love letter to retro gaming. Such amazing attention to detail! BUY THIS GAME! Definitely worth the money.Version: 1.0.1

CowspiracyThis is the first time I write a review. I am doing it to thank the developers for making a fantastic game. I had a 2 hour wait (boys ice skating) and I started playing this game. It felt like only 20 minutes had past but no, the whole 2 hours had flashed by. Scary time sink!!!!.Version: 1.0.1

Great Game, but Control Problem Literally Gets In The WayI already owned Downwell on another system, but I love it so much I figured I would also get it on my phone for quick bursts of action before getting back to work. The game is minimalist in the best way: the 3 color graphics (with your choice of unlockable palettes) instantly convey what you can land on and what is better avoided, and the single button (besides left and right movement) that combines jumping and shooting gives you a surprising amount of agility that allows you to strategize your ammo as you assess on-the-fly whether to plunge ahead to preserve a combo or to take your time and plan your next jump. This leads to this version’s major fault that cost it a star: you can turn off the visibility of the onscreen buttons, but unless you have an external controller, your own thumbs are still going to be blocking your vision of what threats you’re about to pounce onto or dodge! If only there was an option to switch the button zones to the top of the screen with the threats you’ve already passed. Still great game, though!.Version: 1.0.63

Poorly optimizedGreat little game but starts getting alot of slow down issues from 1-3 onwards (iPhone 5, though friends with a 5s/6+ are experiencing the same problem). The fact this game isn't supported on more devices shows optimization is needed so would love an update!.Version: 1.0.1

Amazing gameI couldn’t get into it at first, but after getting the hang of the mechanics it has become one of my favorite arcade style games of all time. The epitome of easy to learn, hard to master. The mechanics are very simple. It cleverly rewards risk taking without forcing you to take risks. This allows you to naturally adapt the difficulty of the game based on your current skill level. In the beginning you can land on the ground a lot to reset your gun. However, the key to mastering the game is learning to create long combos which you can do by not touching the ground between killing enemies. If you only land on enemies or in safe zones, you can keep the chain going. But why would you want to do this and make the game harder for yourself? Every time you get a combo of 25 enemy kills, you can land to end the combo and gain 1 health. If you are full health when you get health (from a 25 enemy combo or from the shop), the bar beneath your health will start to fill up. When all 4 white rectangles under your health are full, you increase your max health by 1. The key is to focus on increasing your max health as much as possible before you reach the final boss. You’ll need all the health you can get!.Version: 1.0.72

Tour de forceThe depth (no pun intended) in this game is quite astonishing. It's unlike anything I've seen in recent times and goes to show that Japanese game development still takes some beating. What an amazing achievement by the developer. Congratulations!.Version: 1.0.1

The best mobile game ever. This is by far the best game on this site. This game has the quality of a game on consoles or pc, but on your phone. The gameplay is fun to play and replay, and the graphics and music is great to look at and listen to. The only thing I would say is bad is that the game doesn't give too much to make you want to come back except for the fun gameplay. But this game still needs to be more known because it's the best mobile game ever made..Version: 1.0.2

A Gem.Simply put, this ode to classic gaming has it all. The introduction leaves an enticing feeling as you decide to leave the comfort of your bed for an adventure down a challenging and exciting well hole. As far as iPhone controls go, this game has a smooth feel with a three button layout. The animations of the sprites are cute and well thought out giving way to the simple color palette. Overall a complete experience for handheld gaming and worth your cash. I look to developers to take something from this game in terms of style and simplicity..Version: 1.0.2

This is a REAL video game!If you are looking for a mobile game that actually feels like a "real" video game, then you've found it. It's got beautiful 8-bit graphics, excellent sound, responsive controls, and it's difficult enough to keep you going for a good while. I have enjoyed the heck out of this game. I do have two complaints- First, I often wind up with a frozen game when I leave it for whatever reason, whether it be to read a text, or maybe just having to put the phone down for a while. Exiting and returning to this app often causes it to freeze upon return (iOS 9.2.1 on a 5s). Second, it does not play well with other audio, i.e. music, podcasts, whatever. Having a podcast running makes it almost certain that my run is done if I should happen to leave it for some reason. Now, in spite of the fact that it is *incredibly* frustrating to lose my progress 2/3 of the way through a winning run, I'm *still* giving 5 stars, because this game is just that much fun. I've been playin' video games for over 20 years now, and this is one of the greats. The learning curve is steep, but the depth is there, and the end is worth it. This isn't some dandy rush/mash of blands garbage; this is the real deal. Good luck with hard mode! (^_^).Version: 1.0.2

The bestVery fun.Version: 1.0.2

One thing to make it excellentAs others have said, the buttons at the bottom are elevated to the point where it makes it difficult to see what comes ahead. If the powerup/status icons were moved from the bottom of the screen to the top (say just under the health bar), then the action buttons could be moved lower and let the player see more of the enemies and terrain that lie ahead. (Putting it more on par with the PC version.) Please make this change! EDIT: After playing the game a while longer, I've noted that you can turn off the visible buttons by tapping the top bar and going to options. Anywhere in the lower half of the screen can be tapped instead, making it easier to see..Version: 1.0.2

Hall of famerBuying this game feels like a win. I hesitated at first thinking the black and red colour scheme would eventually get too much, I was wrong. Fluid, crisp controls - fast and fun gameplay and beautiful 8-bit graphics. What’s not to love?.Version: 1.0.2

A Rare GemAfter 30 seconds of playing Downwell, I was hooked. This is a beautiful game with engaging gameplay and a rich atmosphere. An absolute steal at less than 3 quid - pick it up today, you won't regret it!.Version: 1.0.1

Would be 5 star if you could play in vertical mode on an iPadAmazing game, great mechanics, with a massive omission of vertical play mode for iPad. The game is designed to be played vertically, and with controller mode it’s a massive oversight that you can’t enable TATE mode on an iPad..Version: 1.0.63

Great GameReally love the feel of it, the way it looks and the sound effects. Would be cool if there were more styles and maybe different modes, but definitely worth $3.99.Version: 1.0.2

Love itGreat game. 5 stars. Simple, yet amazing..Version: 1.0.71

Well well wellThis is such a good game! Looks and sounds great, simple but strategic and has that 'just one more go' sense of fun. I'm recommending this to everybody!.Version: 1.0.1

ExceptionalAmazing 2bit graphics, amazingly right controls, amazing rogue-like replay ability. Amazing game. Buy it because free to play games make to pay more for a much lesser games..Version: 1.0.1

Great funJust discovered this - beautifully designed and works great on iPhone..Version: 1.0.71

Fantastic! This is as good an iPhone game is there is. The touch controls may drive you crazy at first, because this is the kind of old-school fast-paced twitch game that you ideally want a classic controller for. But when you get used to the touch controls, they actually work fairly well..Version: 1.0.2

Addicting and FunOne of the best games I've ever played. It has amazing graphics and sound. With fun gameplay. However I recommend playing on an Ipad.Version: 1.0.2

Perfect 10/10One of the few mobile games that is undeniably perfect at what it does, amazing pick up and play game and there is so much variety in colour pallets, weapons and play styles to where it could be played near infinitely.Version: 1.0.72

My new favourite time killer.Seriously addictive game, well worth the price. Beautiful visuals, fun game play and great style. It reminds me of Kid Icarus where you fall instead of climb. Try it out you won't regret it..Version: 1.0.2

Needs sound toggle!Incredible game, you’ve probably gathered that from all the other reviews. It feels like a real arcade or console game on my phone which is unreal. However, I wish I could turn off sound effects in game so I can listen to my own music while playing without the effects!.Version: 1.0.72

Just awesomeI can't believe this was just a couple of bucks. Compelling gameplay, cool sound design and neat pixel art. This is what casual mobile gaming should be..Version: 1.0.1

Favorite iPhone Game in Years.I do not put that title lightly. I have been playing games on my phone for over seven years. Most iPhone games age badly or have terrible micro transactions these days. This game is timeless, super fun, and has great music. The animation is fluid and funny at times. The power up system makes every game feel different. It's so satisfying to get further down the well every game. I've been playing for months but I've never beat the games four locations, because it's such a perfectly challenging game. There are four characters that play differently, so even more replay value. And then there is one of my favorite features, the color pallets. The gems can unlock new color schemes the longer you play. It's like throwing a fresh coat of paint on the game every time. I simply love this game. You should play it if you like real games..Version: 1.0.2

FlawlessThe art style struck me straight away along with the music. Full controller support surprised me too. The gameplay is a nice mix of Metroid and Spelunkly. It's pretty much perfect. 5/5.Version: 1.0.1

WoowI love this game. I am addicted.Version: 1.0.2

Got stuck in a wallThis is a great game and I really do love it but I encountered a glitch in one of the side rooms where I managed to clip off the top of the screen and ended up stuck in a wall in the main cavern. I don’t think it’s common but just wanted to point it out.Version: 1.0.2

Please make the laser fire up and down at the same timePlease make the laser shoot up too. I’m suffering from the bats. Apart from that amazing game..Version: 1.0.63

It’s a great game BUT…I love playing this game to pass the time but one gripe I have is that I can’t listen to my music with headphones on without hearing the game audio if you can make it so that I can play my music with headphones without hearing the game sound effects that would be great thank you..Version: 1.0.72

YES THIS GAME IS PERFECT BUT!!IF YOU LOVE YOURSELF BUY THIS GAME <3 PLEASE READ THIS PLEASE ADD TILTING THE IPHONE FOR CONTROLS SO TILTING THE IPHONE TO THE LEFT YOU RUN TO THE LEFT<- TILT TO THE RIGHT YOU RUN TO THE RIGHT -> TO PLAY WITH ONE HAND =) Please add this option !!!BEST GAME IN THE WORLD!!!.Version: 1.0.2

The best mobile gameThis is actually my first App Store review, because Downwell is that good. It is not just a great game, but a perfect game for its format. It’s quick, arcade-y rogeulike gameplay with its intuitive simple controls and gameplay make it perfect to play on your phone. The combo system allows its surface simplicity to actually have a lot of depth and challenge. It really is the best mobile game no doubt, 5 stars. However, I do have complaints. As a UX change, I wish you could also turn off sound-effects. You can turn off background music, but it’s pretty annoying when you’re trying to listen to music and you hear the little beeps and boops. As an actual gameplay complaint, while I really appreciate the simplicity I do wish their were more upgrades with more diversity. The very few in the game feel somewhat limited after enough gameplay. They haven’t updated this game in a year so I really hope they make a sequel with more content. This game is truly amazing and if you’re gonna have 1 game on your phone it should be Downwell..Version: 1.0.63

Really amazing game!!!I'm just going to say I haven't fully played this game, I got it a few days ago and (Maybe it just me) but this game is hard!!! But that and a whole lot of other things makes me really like it, like the fact there is no story, or that there are different gun upgrades that help you change the type of gun you have or when you get an extra 4 health you get 1 more health point, And it's really addicting. Totally recommend it!!!.Version: 1.0.2

Brilliant GameSound design is brilliant, plays beautifully. Addictive fun with a 'just one more run' feel..Version: 1.0.1

A Work of ArtYears later, I’m still not tired of Downwell. The play control, sounds, and graphics are undeniably solid. The upgrades, shop system, and difficulty of the game are perfect. The game plays well on iPhone, PC, and Macbook (using boot camp), and its small footprint makes it even more attractive to have installed at all times. The touch screen controls are fine, but the game is even better with a paired controller..Version: 1.0.72

Great gameLots of fun. Very addictive. Great game by the developers.Version: 1.0.2

AmazingFantastic game, super tight controls and really addictive. I'm not usually into the rogue-like games, but this one is just great. If you're on the fence, go for it..Version: 1.0.2

Fantastic GameUsually, apps and games on the phone/mobile are LOADED with Pointless adverts, this is what got me back into mobile gaming, along with The Battle Cats and Terraria, I HIGHLY recommend this game to those who enjoy mobile games, sure it’s hard at first but the more you play, the better you get, just like anything else. Yeah it costs money, but it’s only 3.99. 3.99 for a Fantastic game. Go play this. It’s great.Version: 1.0.2

Amazing pixel style arcade falling shooterDownwell is a ridiculously addicting vertical shooter where you slowly fall to the bottom of a well while trying to collect gems, find gun boot upgrades or purchase health or charge upgrades from the shops along the way down. The game sports a classic retro look with its 8-bit pixel graphics and also let's the player unlock skins that will have you thinking you're playing it on your first ever game boy. After completing normal mode you're given an even more challenging mode which I have yet to beat to do this day. Even though the game is for the most part repetitive, the upgrades you'll receive after completing each level will make it seem like a different run through each time. It also rewards skilled playing by giving you health, gems and charge points after racking up large combos. The combo system makes the game feel very rewarding and gives the player a reason to keep playing to rack up even bigger combos. I have been unable to delete this game from my phone and will continue to play this for the foreseeable future. Amazing game Devolver keep up the amazing work..Version: 1.0.2

[Almost] PerfectDownwell is comfortably my favourite — and dare I say it, the best — iOS game of the last two years. Bar none! I've probably ploughed through 12hrs of head-stomping, boot-firing fun in the last week alone... I just really wish there was an option to play it in landscape on my iPhone 6s Plus!.Version: 1.0.2

Reviewers were right!Heard a lot about this game from several videogame reviewers, and they were right :). The game has great gameplay and I think it fits in perfectly with mobile gaming. Great for times when you only have some time to spare playing something..Version: 1.0.2

A Beautiful Game with Amazing Animation, But...I'm going to start off by saying this is probably the best looking game on iOS, in my opinion. The animation is just flawless. With that said, playing the game on the iPhone is hindered, not by virtual controls, but by the size of the phone. It actually cramps my hand when I attempt to hold my phone the way they intend. I would MUCH prefer holding the phone horizontally, even at the sacrifice of screen usage. At least give players that option! The way it currently is, I just can't play the game..Version: 1.0.2

Awesome!Still one of IOS’s top games!.Version: 1.0.63

FunA little tough to play on a tiny iPhone se but after some practice it becomes so addictive.Version: 1.0.2

FantasticThis is a fantastic game, and well worth the price. The controls are tight, the game always feels fresh, and the style is great. Random level generation means that every game is a different experience, so you can play it over and over without repetition. The progression is nice, though some more palates would be nice for a future update. It's definitely unforgiving, and a single mistap in hard mode can destroy a run. But all in all, it's a must-buy for whatever platform you have..Version: 1.0.2

Spectacular except for one bug....This game is amazing. Looks great, plays smooth, and all-around fun & addicting gameplay that will make you say "Just one more...." This game is perfection except for one pesky bug. Sometimes, when a person calls me, Facetimes me or exit the app and go back to it, the sound turns off. I check settings and it says it's on. So, I keep switching in on and off, but sadly you need to close the game and open it back. I don't know what the problem is, I'm playing on a 1-month old, brand new iPhone 6S, so I don't know what's happening. Please solve this imperfection for an otherwise stellar game! You guys are amazing :).Version: 1.0.2

SlickAwesome music, feels great. Everything is lovely. I wish my phone had buttons to play it with though.Version: 1.0.1

EpicGreat game mechanics just keep me coming back for more. Simple yet sophisticated, a true hidden gem..Version: 1.0.2

The one game to rule them all.It makes me want to come back every time. I just want to get further into the well and see what is down there. I don't know if it's the simplicity of the game, the nostalgic factor it gives me when I play it, or the fact that it can go from being a quick dopamine-fix game to a hour long session. Worth every penny. I'd love to have more updates added to the game, new power ups, new modes, new enemies. I'm just craving more and more..Version: 1.0.2

BrilliantOne of the more amazing apps I've seen in quite a long time. The gameplay is seemless, responsive and very entertaining. The item and shop aspect of the game is one I didn't expect but I absolutely love. It'd be great to see continued work and updates to this game, because it's one of the few that really deserve it..Version: 1.0.2

Incredible game!Beating Downwell (on normal) was one of the most satisfying gaming experiences of my life! Such a perfect balance of skill and strategy. You discover the great depth of mechanics gradually overtime but it never feels frustrating. Can’t recommend it enough!.Version: 1.0.2

Perfect! This game is worth the money, it has no in game purchases and the developers could easily have added those but they haven't! (Thank god!!!). The gameplay is fast paced and challenging, the upgrade system has a very similar feel to the upgrade system in the Binding of Isaac and the shops are similar to. The gameplay is unique and fun, I love the retro style and the brilliantly charming character. 100% Worth a buy!.Version: 1.0.2

SO ADDICTIVEWhen I first stumbled upon this game I was trying to think if I should spend 5.00 on it. Then, I just ended up getting it and sort of regretting it. But then I played it for the first time. And I absolutely loved it so much. This is definitely the best game on mobile and I am very sad to see that it is not on the top ten games of 2016. If you are reading this review, then download this game. It will be well worth your time..Version: 1.0.2

Great!Simple and have hours of fun!.Version: 1.0.2

Fantastic!Just a phenomenal game, challenging but fair. One of the best games I've ever played on iOS!.Version: 1.0.72

GoodGreat game, would love controller support though!.Version: 1.0.63

Awesome totally worth $4 cadReally fun, love the game. A tip for the developers, if u could make an option for the controls to not cover the bottom of the screen, like maybe put them on the side or on the top, it’d be nice. Can be a bit annoying falling and not seeing what’s next cause ur thumbs are in the way :) still absolutely fantastic game.Version: 1.0.63

Great gameI'm really happy to see this game in the indie game showcase this time because this game certainly deserves it.Version: 1.0.2

Amazing Game!Downwell is the best game I have on my iPhone, though i played it on my friend's iPhone 6 and it was a bit easier cuz of the bigger screen. I also would like to see a mode that resembles the PC version and lets you play the game holding your phone horizontally. But it is an awesome game and worth every cent!.Version: 1.0.2

Keep It Simple StupidAwesome time killer. You fall. You shoot things. You get gems. Tons of unlockable palettes and game modes incentivize continued play and keep things interesting even after you've cleared the game. Clearing the game will take a while however. It took me a dozen tries just to get to 2-1 and I promptly died to the first enemy there. The game is difficult but having to restart isn't rage inducing since everything is a little different for each playthrough. Downwell is definitely worth the $2.99 for hours of "jump in and go" entertainment..Version: 1.0.2

Great but...Lots of fun, but I can't put my phone to sleep or use any other app without the game crashing. Very annoying when I click a text message notification or something....Version: 1.0.2

AddictingVery fun gameplay; I connected my controller to my iPad and even though there are three buttons, it really enhances the experience. The game is still very fun, nonetheless..Version: 1.0.72

FANTASTIC!Awesome game probably the best game I’ve played all day😄.Version: 1.0.63

Instant ClassicAmazing atmosphere and retro inspired visuals, excellent sound design and tight controls make this game a wonderfully challenging experience. Going for big combos is incredibly fun and satisfying. Downwell is pure elegance!.Version: 1.0.1

Seriously goodThis game is fantastic, I absolutely love it. The sfx and gfx are beautiful and clean. The game is captivating and always interesting. BUY IT NOW!! :D.Version: 1.0.1

Great gameI love this game, with its simple controls, yet difficult gameplay there is a lot of things going on in this game. I think this game deserves a lot more recognition. Great game keep up the great work..Version: 1.0.63

Best iOS game I've ever playedI've played some good mobile games before - but nothing like Downwell. All of the other games have really felt like a mobile game. Downwell simply doesn't. It feels like something I could have played on my Gameboy when I was six years old. The graphics and sounds are so authentic that, when coupled with the original gameplay, you've got a serious winner on your hands. I can't stop playing. So worth the money..Version: 1.0.2

Levels🥺Please please please please please, make levels in this game! It is awesome, but with levels as well , it would be absolutely perfect 👌! I bet you MUCH more people would get your awesome game if you did that! Downwell is amazing but it would be even more so if you did that! I would never get tired of it!.Version: 1.0.63

Excellent game, but has an issueI love this game! I've played it for ages now, its great fun and I can't imagine I'll stop playing any time soon. However, recently I've started experiencing a really annoying problem. On many occasions, if I either leave the app quickly to do something else or turn my phone off for a minute, the game will crash when I come back to it and I'll lose everything I've just been doing. It's terrible, especially if I'm in the middle of a great run! Can the devs please take a look at this and see if there's a solution? Thanks for your time. Great game!.Version: 1.0.2

Excellent GameI have a hard time spending money on a game that isn’t optimized for my phone, because I want the best experience that I can get out of it. That was basically my only reason to hold back on this title, but when I figured out that an update optimized it for the XS Max, I immediately wanted to try it out. So far, it hasn’t disappointed, and will probably stay on my phone as a game to play on the train or when I have absolutely nothing else to do..Version: 1.0.63

One-of-a-kind gem!I have never had anything bad to say about this game. It keeps me coming back with the unlocks and characters, and gets my blood pumping with gems as I fly through the increasingly difficult levels. You really care about how much health you have and upgrades will truly help you stay alive in this action packed adventure. Starting above the well on the surface really tops things off. The one thing I would like to see change is iPhone X full screen support. It would let the player see much more of the screen with less finger in the way. To be honest if you never changed it I would still play everyday. It would be nice though! Fantastic game 5/5 *UPDATED REVIEW BELOW* Wow, this game hasn’t left my phone since I downloaded it. And that’s saying a lot because I get bored of games really quickly. You would think there’s not much to do, but that’s the beauty of it; you are perfecting the art of falling in a way that hasn’t been done before! Reaction time, patience, and a few minutes are the ingredients for a good time in Downwell. But there’s nothing stopping you from playing it like a slow paced Mario level! With the characters, upgrades, shop items, and pallete options, this game can be played in countless ways! Amazing!!!!!! Oh and the only thing I would have added has been added just recently! iPhone X support!.Version: 1.0.63

DamnDamn I like this game. It's so addictive and fun, well worth the money.Version: 1.0.1

Mint gameThe game is quality and takes a while to complete as it is pretty hard but definitely worth it give it a blast..Version: 1.0.2

Bring Downwell to the Next LevelThis game is one of my all time favourites for its unique, fast paced action proving it to be the ultimate time killer. I absolutely love the retro styling and game mechanics. Everything's balanced perfectly in Downwell. It's relatively difficult yet not impossible and it's quite fast paced, yet not overwhelming. So why not 5 stars? Repetitiveness. Nothing to do with how hard or easy the game is, it's just that after a while it starts to just get... sort of boring. I feel like something more needs to be added. Maybe add characters instead of just changing the styles, and I'd love to see stuff like daily challenges, achievement etc. implemented in the game, to bring this game to the next level. There's been no update in ages and I really do hope they haven't neglected this masterpiece..Version: 1.0.2

Downwell is Down Right Awesome! So I am usually a fan of games like these, I saw the price and the good praise from many places and people, and I bought it. I had seen it on steam before but I just hadn't gotten around to buying it yet. Now that I have, I can't stop playing it! I have yet to find any bugs (is the moon supposed to be flickering? It might just be my iPod 5th gen acting up...) and the game play is simply awesome. I love the controls, and to hose who are complaining about having to tap each button, I think you can just slide your finger, but you get less control as you descend into the depths. The unlock able pallets are what makes me keep coming back, and trying to hit the highest combo. I love the concept, too. I live everything about this game! 10/5 all day long! -Turtle.Version: 1.0.2

Bought this on iOS and steamThis game is freaking addicting! Unlocking and playing all the different color pallets reminds me of playing 90's GB and GBC games. Favorite is the black and red scheme though. It just seems easier to see gems and such. Really fun game! I flat out hate a couple weapon types, but the first gun actually holds up well as long as you increase its capacity, so it's more of A personal observation than A complaint. I think it's easier to play on iOS, but I did play it for two months on iOS before getting the PC version. It just has A more fluid feel to it control-wise..Version: 1.0.2

IncredibleThis is one of the best games I've ever played on my phone. The novel approach of a platformer in a constant descent brings up some great aspects to gameplay, like physics based combos where you leap from enemy to enemy, in a ballet of destruction. This game is easy to play but challenging to beat. And after you beat it the first time you unlock hard mode, which unsurprisingly, is very hard. There is an incredible attention to detail in the pixelated animations and physics. I played this over and over for many months and still find it entertaining and challenging..Version: 1.0.2

Long time gamer first time all the way downI downloaded Downwell two years ago when it came out and beat it for the FIRST time yesterday (the final boss is insane). Just to give you an idea of how insanely fun this game is, perfect combo of old school gaming and modern phone games. Amazing way to kill half an hour when you’re stuck somewhere. The controls are difficult but imho that’s a plus, reminds me of double dragon II where it feels like it takes actual thumb skills. Make more games please!!!.Version: 1.0.2

Not a phone game fan but this game got meReally cool game! Just like way back to last 80s game style but it's a lot fun! Worth the money! 👍🏻👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿.Version: 1.0.1

What a mobile game should beGreat. Addictive. Perfect controls. Lovely retro graphics. Buy it 😍.Version: 1.0.2

Definitely worth the money. When I watched the video in the description for this app it looked complicated because of the amount of stuff in the screen. However this game is extremely simple and easy to learn but not to master. :).Version: 1.0.2

Excellent gameGreat game, well worth the money. My only issues are that it overheats my iPhone 6, and it crashes if I switch app or lock my phone. Hoping that this is fixed in an update soon, because other than that it's my favourite iOS game by far..Version: 1.0.1

Fantastic quick paced distractionThe rougelite elements of this game work wonderfully for mobile, being able to play a few games on the go is exactly how this game was designed. It helps that the focus of the game, constantly moving downwards, is aided by the vertical shape of the mobile itself, your target is always on focus. Naturally, the touch controls can be an issue at times, but the buttons given to you are large enough spaces that it's very easy to adjust to them..Version: 1.0.2
