Patterning 2 : Drum Machine for Positive User Reviews

AmazingI paid for version 1, I paid for version 2 and I’ll pay for version 3. Brilliant drum machine and sequencer. I use it standalone and to sequence hardware. I’ll drop in a long sample from AudioShare, cut it up and make something mad. I love it. It’s on a par with certain Swedish hardware, at least in terms of its depth..Version: 2.2.3

A Brilliant App Made even more.I have owned Patterning since it came out in 2015, I have used it as my main drum app since then. This new app is so much more, with ratcheting added, major upgrade to the amount of automation it is capable of. The kits how easy it is to use anything as a sample. I could go on and on. I understand it is not capable of being used on 4th generation iPADS but I have an Air 2 so I have no issue. If you are thinking of upgrading that old machine, don’t think any longer, Do it simply for this app! You will not be sorry you did..Version: 2.0.3

Makes beats hardProbably work the way you get the money from you and your dad and the bank account to make sure your credit score will work up to the next couple weeks so that will help me with your schedule so that we could have the next one or a few days before I could have them for a while or if.Version: 2.2.8

Dope dope dope give the people hopeThis app is intuitive, fun, and worth so much more than the asking price. I use it in my live setup, in the studio, and while I'm taking a dump. It's perfect for every occasion..Version: 2.2.9

Awesome Drum App! I have some requests...Olympia Noise Co, Patterning 2 is simply amazing and worth 5 Stars if you can give us the below features. Please give us: 1. MIDI Export all patterns as an Abelton Live Drum Rack Format and/or as individual tracks. I would love to be able to not worry about what drum samples I am using and export out the MIDI from Patterning 2 into an Abelton Live Drum Rack or into another iOS app. 2. iPhone iOS app version. I don’t always have my iPad with me, but I always have my iPhone. 3. AUv3 Compatibility. Keep up the good work with this app. Definitely has been allowing me to create great drum parts on the go..Version: 2.2.1

Worthy update to a 5-star, essential, all-time iOS appMy four stars is based upon this being an update to the classic Patterning, not as a stand-alone app by itself. The new features are great, but it's pretty much a sequel and as such there's no way it could match the magic of the first. Happy to pay for the new stuff, but nothing groundbreaking here like before. Hint: in iOS settings, you can opt to revert to the default colors (instead of this bland new crap) to make the app as fun as it's always been..Version: 2.0.3

GarbageTell me why you can’t do the most basic of functions.... Sample from multiple samples?? Oh I know cause this cause this dude doesn’t know how to make an app. Go to school and learn something about programming before trying to play with the big boy. Your company is lame!.Version: 2.2.3

One of the bestOne of the best drum machines on iOS (or anywhere) and arguably the best drum sequencer interface ever created..Version: 2.2.3

AUv3?This need to be AUv3 to be useable these days..Version: 2.2.19

Easiest, most organic beat-makerI've tried tons of drum machines on the iPad, looking for one that made it easiest to create new beats and capture ideas. I keep coming back to this one! The circular interface is creative, and as easy as a grid to use. But I can change subdivisions and offset the timing of individual instruments easily, which lends itself to getting a more in-the-pocket feel and adding polyrhythms. Lastly, there's a huge selection of downloadable kits ranging from electronic and acoustic drums to traditional instruments of many kinds to provide inspiration. Love it!.Version: 2.2.19

Feature request -pattern Randomizer generatorPartnering is a great app as it is, however would be even greater if you had a pattern generator radomiser. This would help spark new pattern ideas..Version: 2.2.9

We’re still having fun,...and you’re still the one. - AT.Version: 2.1.8

Still my favouriteAs the title says. Patterning 2 is still my favourite IAA drum app and one of the few IAA apps I still use..Version: 2.0.6

Fantastic App, but missing essential featureFirst up I want to say that this is by far my favourite sample based drum machine app on iPasOS. It has almost everything I could ask for in a drum sampler, and I have used it as a stand in for my Digitakt on several occasions as I has a lot of the same functionality. Unfortunately however, I can’t use it in my usual workflow as it doesn’t have AUV3 functionality, so i dont use it nearly as much as i would like to. I usually make music in Drambo when using my iPad, and unfortunately Drambo doesn’t support IAA apps, which i totally understand as it is old and almost obsolete technology, so why bother incorporating it, right? I genuinely hope that AUV3 functionality is incorporated into this app to future proof it as it would be a huge shame to lose it. If it wasn’t for that though, I would give Patterning 2 a perfect score..Version: 2.2.10

Yes it is worth it...Has enough new features to justify it being a new app. Random, better midi, pitch quantization with scale, and really slick ratcheting for starters. Better polyrhythmic implementations. Few quirks here or there but right out of the gate it’s a solid release. Used on both iPad Air and iPad Pro without issue. Well done..Version: 2.0.3

From the Basic to the ExperimentalThis is a great app. It is fun. It is easy to make a basic pattern, but the fun comes when you explore all the possibilities..Version: 2.1.5

This is how I think of musicEspecially for drums, the circle makes sense in my brain. I pop out beats and loops so fast in this app, and they have more soul than linear programming. So simple to use, but so much under the hood including; probability, timeline shift, a ton of free kits and ability to dd your own sounds. Can’t wait for AUV3 to come!.Version: 2.2.16

One of the bestSequel to the best drum app almost ever. Best sequencer for poly and cross rhythm, totally amazing circular sequencer. Limited by being only 8 channel super simple sampler.Version: 2.2.2

Is Patterning 2 the Best App of it's KindIPADOS/IOS has sooo many apps, high quality competitive apps of every possible type that it's not possible for any one app to be the top banana, best of the best, the one and only. BUT there are apps that are so incredible that they belong in the best short list. Patterning 2 is one of those top of the heap apps, which means that anyone interested in using apps for what Patterning 2 is used for MUST have Patterning 2 Installed on their device(s) and more importantly, MUST actually use it as often as possible. Why, you ask? So that you gave the chance to create wonderful musical, special music. Get it, spend time to learn how to get the most of it, and finally put it to use to create music.it's the kind of app that provokes statements like "WHAT!!! It does that too!!!" and "I have an idea. Open Patterning 2 and let's do,it".Version: 2.2.8

Phenomenal & beautiful sequencerThis is THE most fun unique sequencer I’ve ever used!?! I’ve experienced a few crashes here n there and rarely a few imported samples randomly go missing upon loading some projects, so I end up just replacing them. Other than that, I appreciate the unfamiliarity and unique ways of programming drums and little melodies. I absolutely love the probability and ratchet randomness that you can get outta this app.. seriously, amazing job dev’s, thank you for your creative tools in which you share for us to collaborate... Immensely grateful....Version: 2.1.1

💚🙏Can we pls have the option for the sequence to be a rectangular step sequencer too someday in some iap? we’d love that too.Version: 2.2.19

Perfect executionI’ve spent all of 10 minutes with this app, a lifetime with various DAW’s, and can honestly say this is incredible. The value for price point is off the charts. Really well done devs..Version: 2.2.19

Doesn’t Fit New iPad MiniApp needs to be updated to fit the new iPad mini. UI is cut off Edit: fixed by dev, thank you.Version: 2.2.15

Essential StuffEssential drum tool that brings out ideas and patterns in my creative work that previously evaded me. Pretty much the ‘go to’ drum pattern maker. Oh, and it’s fun too..Version: 2.2.12

Although a great concept and perfect marriage…It seems to have lost something for me… Pattern (the first app) just appealed to me in every way. Simple on the surface and very deep once you explore. I loved the magic of that initial release, and still do. But because I have an iPad Pro I figured I would go ahead and get Pattern 2 because of landscape mode. But felt let down when basically it’s just an iPad version, of the Pattern 1. There were NO new drums or Pattern 2 exclusive drums, so a little let down. Yes there are some extra features, as there is when buying an iPad app, and getting the free iPhone version. If you already have the iPhone version, and you love it, maybe just stick with the free iPhone version. ***I will say I didn’t mind paying the developer for his/her work and hours spent on these apps! It was WELL worth the money!.Version: 2.2.9

Good sample playing app.Unique and very accessible UI. Love the probability settings which help to vary the Beats. My only wish is for a polyphony setting or a way for samples to choke themselves. This would help immensely with writing phrase based beats. Please please can this be added?.Version: 2.1.1

Amazing! This is the best Euclidean sequencer I have ever seen, on account of the user actually being able to punch in notes. But I wish this app had a feature ing multiple circles at once (like multi-page view) like HI-RPE2 (which does not allow the user to punch in notes, in the Euclidean view) does. I would have given it five stars if it had this feature..Version: 2.2.9

Insane MIDI CC for Hardware Synths😎👌For me, the only thing missing from the original Patterning was being able to assign whatever Midi CC # value to control my hardware synths. Now I can automate any parameter easily! That would have been enough for me, but he took it to the next level, because you can have different midi channels per track, and assign different midi cc values on every track!!! It’s insane..Version: 2.0.3

The app is the best sequencer I’ve ever used!I really love everything about the UI. It’s great for making beats using the internal drum kits, but it’s also amazing as a sequencer for external synths, etc. The midi routing flexibility makes this app very flexible. Currently my favorite app on my iPad..Version: 2.2.19

Amazing Drum Machine but .... 🧐Fix It Plz !!! 😭 The original patterning was much faster when tapping on songs patterns , this one just lacks the speed , it shows a little outline loading after tapping the pattern. Not instantly like its predecessor. Im talking about the - Song- Module.... After I create multiple patterns with different drum variations, i go into the - song - module to generate a drum loop for export. For some unknown reason it lingers before playing the selected song pattern, is not instantly like the original patterning. A total train wreck !!! 😔i have to fix it in my DAW after exporting the loops , i never have to do such thing with the original patterning . Can someone explain how to fix it ... thanks 🙏.Version: 2.2.3

Every Patterning 1 user should get Patterning 2. End of story. If you’re even mildly interested in iOS Music Production then you’ve heard of or own Patterning, the most innovative drum machine app ever released. It was a tall order, but the developer tweaked the foundation and added some majorly useful additions that make Patterning 2 a must buy. The ability to assign multiple kits and several grooves to a song makes it possible to arrange a track completely inside Patterning 2 and then export that drum part to your DAW of choice. An incredible app...Highly Recommended..Version: 2.0.8

This app is a gemI’ve gone through a lot of software, hardware groove boxes and drum machines over many years and this one is so good. Great for subtle variations to spice things up, to full kits in the available sound packs..Version: 2.2.16

The Gold Standard of SequencersThere’s a reason why Patterning is considered by many to be the ultimate sample sequencer - it’s intuitive, fun and incredibly powerful all at the same time. The design of this app is magnificent, everything is laid out intuitively and the more one experiments with the features the full potential becomes apparent. There are those who consider Patterning to be the closest software has ever come to the depth of the mighty Elektron sequencer, particularly the Digitakt. I am amongst those who believe this app makes the Digitakt largely redundant, which is significant considering the price difference. However, comparisons are for scrubs, so I won’t dwell on this. Simply put, this is the most awe-inspiring sequencer I have ever used, and it is a must-have for musicians on an iOS device..Version: 2.2.3

Awesome tool, best iOS drum machinePerfect drum machine app, no 5 dollar drum kits, no nonsense. Big props to dev for getting this to work as well as it does while having so many advanced features. I’d pay again for this gem XD.Version: 2.1.1

Better than an Elektron machineI was considering an Elektron sample based drum machine recently, comparing features & workflows, etc. Patterning 2 has all the features (parameter lock, chromatic midi out) I need from a Digitakt & more than a Model:Samples. Plus it has that genius circle/layer programming interface, stereo samples (as many as your iPad can store) and Ableton project export..Version: 2.1

Amazing but flawed app…This is a fantastic drum machine. The way you construct beats with it is very unique and inspiring. You can easily come up with grooves that you’ve never heard before. But there’s one major featuring missing that’s driving me crazy… you can’t delete patterns once you create them! At least there is no obvious way I can see. If this single issue was fixed, I’d easily rate Patterning 5 stars..Version: 2.2.9

BestThere’s nothing that comes close to form and function for this sort of software. I have the most fantastic apps and there’s some amazingly fine gear on iOS but this is a “must have “ for all the things that it does so very well.Version: 2.2.8

CRAZY number of interesting Kits and a neat way to program them! The interface is perfect for fast programming if you want to keep it simple, but also lends itself to searching for happy accidents (rhythmically speaking) if you want to dig a little deeper. The best thing about it though is the HUGE number of kits available for it - all free for the downloading. Tons of bread-and-butter good sounding drums but also a good helping of weird percussion to provide creative fuel! The IAA is a little quirky to set up in Cubasis but now that I know how to route it into an audio track this app has become my go-to drum machine. If this app was had AU3 compatibility it would be the perfect drum app. So instead of rating it perfect I’ll just have to rate it the best one I’ve seen yet..Version: 2.0.6

Worth living in the 21st CenturyI swear the developers of this app created something so awesomely sophisticated and beautiful that I don’t know where to begin. I’m a bit fan of loops and randomness and polyrhythms and automation and they’ve created such a perfectly designed environment for creativity and play and invention that I could kiss their feet. It’s deep and approachable and the visual design is so appealing. The cloud kit idea is so cool and wonderful. The flexibility and immediacy of access is I think unparalleled. I love working with Patterning 2 and since the first iteration of this stellar app that brings the concept of drum machine into orbit and beyond..Version: 2.2.19

Amazing drum/rhythm machineWas initially taken back by the interface but figured it out the basics in under an hour. One cool thing: You can change SONGS instantly and seamlessly from the file menu, wherever you are in the measure and at the same count, if this makes sense. This makes it easy to create a live set with different songs without a break ever happening. Also, lots of options to randomize patterns. This sat unused on my iPad for almost a year. Now that I’ve figured it out and see all its potential, it’s seriously my no.1 music making app. Get AudioShare or Dropbox to import your own audio files..Version: 2.1.5

The best drum machineOne of the best drum machines out there for an app.Version: 2.2.17

Absolutely brilliant.I already loved the original version of patterning but version 2 takes it to a whole new level!. The fact that you can record each loop in by hand for each part of the numerous drum kits and then send them collectively or individually via midi to other apps is just amazing. Not only to one app either. You can send each note to different apps you have loaded into your AUM session and you can play just the midi send, just the patterning kit sound or both. I also love the new ratchet count effect you can place on any note in the loop. Bloody awesome drum sequencer this is…. Love, love, love it 😊.Version: 2.2.20

I’ve changed my mind...Patterning 2 is a good drum machine app with some nice features. But, I never use it. Why? 1. It’s not an Audio Unit. This means I can’t have multiple instances. I can’t have the huge benefit of state saving in AUM projects. And I have to switch apps to access the UI. 2. The UI itself doesn’t fit correctly on my 11” iPad Pro and is spread across too many screens. Not a showstopper, but I’ve already had to switch apps to access Patterning. 3. There are better options. Not least: Pure Acid by JimAudio, which is AUv3, and has multiple outs! BeatHawk, which is AUv3 and has the best quality sounds on the platform. And there’s Playbeat, which is also AUv3, is really simple to use, produces immediate useable results, and also has great randomisation options. Patterning 2 is a great concept; but there are just too many reasons NOT to use it..Version: 2.2.3

Get this app dummyDo you want personal power over beats, clock and random events? Yes you do and you want this app.Version: 2.2.19

Instantly HookedAs a new iPad music creator I didn’t know of this till today. Downloaded it and some very cool kits, made 3 patterns with variations, loaded them easily into a 4 minute song…all by intuition and common sense, no how to vids needed. Exported to AudioShare and sounds fantastic, ready for daw work and flame. Er…uh…fame. All within 2 hours of first download. This app lives up to its promise, glad to be aboard!.Version: 2.2.15

When I load......patches from the drum kit library...(or an entire drum kit), they appear to load but once you draw some input on the wheel...and press play, different patches are playing (seems like the default kit). Once I save the project and reopen it, the correct (selected) patches or drum kit are/is loaded. But only after saving the project and then reopening...or just closing down the app and restarting it. I do have to admit I’m running on a beta iPad iOS so it might just get resolved once the latest update from either you or apple will come through..Version: 2.1.5

Apologies for lateThis Dev is at the very least thinks 250 years ahead of what others are not being capable of understanding. Are you a Demigod? Like me? Regards, lots of of love. I’m not even gonna tell anybody to to purchase it. If your iq is less than 147 you’re not gonna get this Food for the Beat Gods!.Version: 2.2.19

Super sound, excellent UI and great creative concept but lacks AUv3 plugin version.I can fully recommend this app. Bought it today and the very intuitive UI got me drumming quickly. It’s a shame that an app that claims to be the next generation drum machine lacks an AUv3 plugin version. AU has become the de facto standard of this generation already and inter app audio is a deprecated technology. I would be happy to pay for an IAP to get this - and give the app five stars….Version: 2.2.18

Nothing really compares to this drum programmerIn my 20 years of sound design and music production, I have never come across anything as intuitive, innovative and inspiring as the patterning project. Don’t sleep, pick this up now..Version: 2.2.3

My #1 for years… and about to become my sequencing choice for a hybrid modular setup. One feature request if possible-allow arbitrary editing of midi ‘learned’ control note assignments for pattern changes. Currently (I think) midi learning the note is the only way. This is fine if one wants to set up patterns before a jam, but if eg you wanted to duplicate a pattern to develop it while jamming, you’d have to set up a scenario where the pattern change note could be received. If one was able to just write it in that would give more flexibility: I could duplicate a running pattern, make my edits, then assign a pattern change control note to it by typing it in, then switch to the new pattern when I’m ready to..Version: 2.2.10

Powerful and intuitiveAt last a viable alternative to using highly limited drum drops in our keyboard. We are already using Patterning 2 in our home studio. Still trying to learn and use its full capability. You can search for drum patterns on line and find neat examples of various popular beat patterns, then recreate them in Patterning 2. Then use them with modifications for your tastes and music needed..Version: 2.0.3

AmazingAmazing.Version: 2.0.6

Looks downgraded?Everything is great but why is everything similar looking?.Version: 2.0.3

Really goodIf this was auv3, it’d be 5 stars all day. I know the arguments for not having this app as auv3, but the ‘integrated’ nature of a modern iOS music setup needs it. Come on devs, update this to auv3!.Version: 2.1

🔥🔥best sequencer ever.Version: 2.2.3

The best rhythm app available…Being the lucky owner of a new 12.9 iPad Pro this app has proved be the most complete and inspiring drum and percussion tool available. It’s ability to be musical and elegant with such little input and the lightest of touch is astounding. Connect it with the rest of the studio by midi and the artistic landscape that opens up is overwhelming. Well done to the developers, £20 seems a laughable cost..Version: 2.2.9

Fantastic beat making appSo, I’ve owned patterning 1, and I enjoyed it. I think the whole concept of both apps is interesting and original, and well executed. I decided To get patterning 2 recently, and I love it. There are so many new features. I love the record feature, as well as the song/timeline feature. I would say this app is worth it for $15..Version: 2.1.1

Easy to Populate Ableton Session ViewIf you finish your productions in Ableton Live and like to use Ableton Session View during the songwriting phase, Patterning is an easy and intuitive way to quickly create a beat, then use that beat in Patterning to populate the foundational tracks and clips (including MIDI clips) in Ableton Session View by exporting the Patterning project to a Live Set..Version: 2.2.16

Perfect.Expertly filled the black hole in iPadOS between drum and daw. Has the perfect routing for the musician that wants full control over arrangements and mixes. Perfect for samples that want rock a groove real fast. I have tried a few and this worth it for the musician..Version: 2.2.7

Brilliant!A cut above the rest in iOS music..Version: 2.0.10

Best drum machineNo doubt about it this is my favorite drum machine. A beast that is a pleasure to use.Version: 2.2.1

Intuitive instrumentInterface is exceptional in terms of creativity. It has its limitations if compared to much more expensive software/hardware, however the effects and variables are enough to develop interesting sounds and the Patterning 2’s sequencing abilities are just incredible. I’d recommend this for anyone who is looking for a different way to create beats and music. It will be very exciting to see how this app develops over time. I think the interface alone is a step towards developing a more intuitive and creative space for musicians. thanks!.Version: 2.2.7

Splendid Idea, now falling behindI don’t understand how an app can be this creative, yet still lacks AU3 and randomisation of kits/ kit elements. Surely, anyone who bought this originally would jump at an IAP or entirely new model that included those features? I know I would buy that in an instant. Sadly, as things stand I rarely use it because of what is missing..Version: 2.2.19
