SlideScan - Slide Scanner App for Negative User Reviews

Free version is just a sampleIf you select their free version just to use their basic app you will only get to scan about 10 photos before it locks and you can’t save them to your photo gallery.Version: 2.4

There is betterThis app does what it says on the tin, but it makes a dogs breakfast of doing it. Constant interruptions from within the app. I imagine most people using this app will want to scan old slides and immediately save to their iPhone photos app, and do whatever they want from within the Apple range of apps embedded within phones and iPads. Ok - you ca, but it is a mess to get there. The basic app platform needs a rethink.Version: 3.1

TerribleTerrible. The slides I scanned were very blurry and the colour distorted. Was excited when I saw this but but was let down very quickly..Version: 3.0

Unclear infoIt is unclear how many slides you get without subscribing, and there is a lack of clarity in general. If this is a pay only app it should be clear, and this information was not available in the accessible sections (FAQ etc). It allowed to"skip" and "subscribe later" and appeared to be ready to take photos - unclear if this is a free version with limited number of slides or if this automatically starts a trial or monthly subscription. Best to be clear with your downloaders, as other reviews attest to, or you will be deemed underhand. 2 stars as I can't comment on the use because of the above..Version: 2.0

Photomyne slide scanningThis app is very fast compared to other slide scanners. I made a stand with a slide holder at about 60 mm from the bright white screen and iphone holder as close as it will clearly focus so as to preserve position and steadiness. A zoom facility would be useful. On the downside the picture quality is poor. In most cases this doesn’t matter as many 30 to 60 year old slides have deteriorated (especially Agfa). (In fact the older Kodak are better than the newer ones). The Photomyne definition reproduction for the good slides is poorer than my other scanners. My £120 Kenro gives better definition but is slower. My 10 year old £600 Nikon scanner is too slow to use for large scale production but very good definition. Keith Stringer.Version: 2.4

SlideScanThe app works fine but it is very slow and it is not possible to organize scanned items. Once you scan a lot of slides you have to go through all the slides to get to the latest ones. This is especially true if using the web version. When saving or sharing on from the web version it takes ages for the scans to load, and there is no easy way to group slides. In addition, the app takes forever to sync the slides…. I scanned 400 slides yesterday day and 24 hours later, it is still syncing. So for small scans it is fine, but it is not very well organized..Version: 3.11

Watermarks on the free versionFound this app today and thought great I’ve got loads of slides on Kodachrome, thought I’d try the free version, all good picture quality not that bad either. Didn’t have a problem with the ads as I know the developer has to make money my rub is that after the first 3 scans you get a watermark on the picture which forces you to buy the app to remove. Out of principal I deleted the app and I will find another way to transfer these slides to digital. So to summarise the free app isn’t free unless you don’t have a problem with a watermark on all your scans..Version: 3.10

Great app but too many ads!Too many ads!.Version: 3.7

This is very poor qualityI am disappointed in the quality It is just taking a photo over a light box Great for a bit of a lark but truly not for slides you want to keep.Version: 2.4

SlideScanAm not able to get it working on my iPhone 6 Plus.Version: 2.6

I have canceled my sub as this system does not reproduce an adequate copy to useThis software requires some more work.Version: 2.1

Only good for six thumb nailsFree version is not much use. Can’t download the images to photos for closer look. Full version is quite expensive and I don’t know if it will be satisfactory. Sly marketing in my view..Version: 3.4

Version: 3.1

Misleading presentationThis is not a free app with in-app purchase... it has a free trial but you have to pay to use it.Version: 2.6

Lack of info before downloadThe App Store for iPad says the first few slides are free, no exact number given. A reply to another review states that all the details are given in the App Store - this is NOT true. Once downloaded it then become clear that the free trial only lasts three days. This is not enough time to scan a slide and then get a print done and returned by post. Most apps give a months (at least) free trial or a specified number of uses. All this information is given before the download. You do neither but say you do. Very poor information..Version: 2.2

I wanted to like this1. But the app doesn’t support Macro mode on iPhone 13 Pro, so you can only get so close the slide, resulting in smaller, lower resolution captures. I actually got better, higher resolution results with Apple’s camera app. 2. Focus detection would help too, showing in-focus edges in a color, like digital cameras. 3. Cropping is a little too conservative; picking less of the image margins. 4. Adjusting the crop is possible but fussy. No way to revert to the autocrop after you adjust it manually. 5. It Would be great, since the app detects a backlight, if it would color balance it. I keep my display warm, and I noticed off-temperature highlights In the captures. 6. Would gladly pay the full price if quality-improving features were there. 7. Unfortunately, the developer response to this review missed the point of my criticisms, and worse, did not address the inexplicable lack of support for macro mode..Version: 3.0

Bait and switchDownloaded, then scanned a dozen slides… then unable to save or send without a subscription called optional. Unable to tell from the tiny image if the quality is worth anything. Bait and switch. If zero stars were possible… The “optional in-app purchase” is required to use any features other than scan. Ergo, it is NOT optional..Version: 3.5

PhotomyneHorrible app. Not user friendly. Very difficult to navigate around..Version: 3.7

OK if you have no other wayThe old adage once again should be heeded. If it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. These apps do great on printed analog photos. But on slides, not good at all. If you have no other means to scan your slides then this will give you a very low res, rough picture of your slide. I tried this against slides that I had already scanned with a fairly cheap Wolverine slide scanner. As common sense would dictate, taking a picture of a slide (even with an iphone 13) on a very bright white background will never get you close to an actual slide scanner. Even slides where the people are up close to the camera do not come out clear. They are all fairly blurred. And that’s where the sharpening tool supposedly comes into play. But this only changes the faces and makes them seem superimposed onto the picture with very little quality increase. Do yourself a favor. With what it would cost to pay the monthly subscription on this app for 6 months, you can buy a dedicated slide scanner that plugs right into any laptop and scans slides in seconds. And the quality is very good. 5 to 10 times better than this workaround app..Version: 3.5

Slide scanFrom what I have tried and observed when you blow the slide up and the background light requirements it is a poor quality program. Another thing is that it only will work on my iPad on the vertical way and not on the horizontal way..Version: 2.5

Doesn’t workDoesn’t work. Pics are always blurry.Version: 2.4

Use CameraMy iPhone 7s+ camera did a better quality job without the app. I believe it adds an unnecessary sharpen filter which pixelates the pictures. The app does recrop and kinda retint fast, but it's easy to do a square recrop without it. I never encourage these apps with reoccurring hard to cancel app fees. This should be sold at a one time 5 to max 10$ fee..Version: 2.3

Can’t save images where I want toIt’s not bad software but you cannot save these images to your own photo library, they just stay in this ap?🤬 I cannot move the images from the ap.Version: 3.5

Low quality result, bad customer serviceThe process to scan your slides is archaic to say it best. Hold the slide, hold your phone, say ‘go”, try to hold it still for 3 seconds and get a low quality rendition of your slide. I expected much more. Also, I chose a free trial and now they won’t cancel the service. There was no way to cancel online, only by contacting them, and I sent THREE emails with no response. Contact them on Facebook and they say the cancellation was processed. Then a day later I get a welcome email and a pending charge on my credit card. Not to be trusted!! Update: despite the developer response, they have charged my credit card. BEWARE!!!!.Version: 3.1

I would never buy this appI found it slow shaky and you get constant emails with no easy way to unsubscribe..Version: 3.7

RubbishOver expensive junk, cost you less for a quality scanner. Watermark on photos or pay the price..Version: 3.4

Works real wellThis program works much better than I thought it would. I bought a Kodak Mobile slide box, but the software that comes With it is just ok. Using this program with the box works very well. The image are very sharp and it even catches small details in the slide. I have yet to try it with my light-table, but I’ll bet it works well. The only reason I give it 3 stars is because I think it is too pricey. Paying 4.99 a month to use this software is a bit much. I wish it was a pay one price, and that would be it..Version: 1.0

CrapHmm. In app purchases. Misleading at best. The “free” version lets you scan about ten slides, then it’s done. Now, there’s an option for a 3 day trial, but you are agreeing to continue from the start at a cost. From the ten I actually scanned, I think they were a little over pixelated, grainy and not very clear. Yeah, the colourizing is quick and cool, but.. it’s a pass for me. I’ll stick with my scanner. The response in app purchase from the developer… hah! You can’t use the app without buying it… the in app isn’t about add one. It’s the app itself..Version: 3.0

Not obvious how to create accountYep, I’m having a hard time figuring out how to set up an account thru SlideScan so I can view my photos on my laptop once I scan them on my phone. It’s been really frustrating. I paid with Apple so tried to log in that way—that didn’t work either. So I had originally downloaded the paid version of SlideScan, but I cancelled my subscription until I get instructions from you on how to do this. It would be a shame to pay, scan a bunch of slides, And then find out I could only view them on my phone. It should be way more obvious on your app how to move between the SlideScan app and your website..Version: 2.4

Not perfectVery difficult to avoid getting an unwanted reflection forming part of the image. Perhaps a dark room would work better. Also quite hard to keep phone and slide still long enough to capture the image. Handy if you’re out and about with no access to a scanner, but nowhere near as good as a dedicated slide scanner, and at £5.99 a month it won’t be long till it costs more than one..Version: 2.1

GarbageIPhone does a better job. Horribly grainy scan..Version: 3.0

Great Idea but ...Will cancel my subscription until app is improved. Many lines on copied slides..Version: 1.0

Fraud !!This app offers you a 3 days free trial but then they charge you after 10 hours even thought I canceled my membership. Good luck getting your money back !!! 😡😡😡.Version: 2.7

Shady developersOn the App Store, it says that there is a plan for $6 for a month. Then you go to buy it in the app and they tell you it’s $20 for two years. I have 20 slides to back up. It’s much cheaper to go to a local slide scan place and the quality would be exponentially better. Since I only have a few photos, I was fine with the lower quality within the app but the price is outrageous. They also tell you that you can scan all you want for free. They don’t tell you that you can’t save any for free. What’s the point of scanning is they stay in this app? I’m fine with paying some money, but not a dollar a slide. It worked fine for what it is, but the price is way too high and you don’t realize this until you’ve finished the scanning that they lied about the price on the app page..Version: 2.5

Terrible Scans! with Essential Edit Features ABSENT!Your slide needs to be in good shape to begin with — If the slide is clear the scan is clear. But if the slide is dark like many older slides you are stuck with no features available to lighten or sharpen the photo, only to colorize which does barely anything. This means that you need to purchase other editing apps from Photomyne with the additional features raising the overall costs substantially. Another big problem is that ALL time slides are scanned with a reflection of your phone. The 3 lenses in my iphone reflected on all my scans. If you buy this app be ready to add 3 times the cost for additional apps to get your slides in acceptable order. As for me, the ad did not fit the experience so I am asking for a refund..Version: 3.2

Don’t get this app! This app is designed to hold you and your photos captive, and to find numerous ways to charge you for even the most mundane features. Avoid it!.Version: 3.7

Could be great…I love the idea of this app. But I have a couple problems with it. First of all, I see a reflection of my phone no matter what I do. I even tried making a black cover to go over my phone. But I still see the round circle where the camera is showing up in every picture I take. I saw other people in the reviews have said something similar and customer service says to contact them. I did, but have not heard anything back yet and my free trial ends tomorrow. Secondly, I want to airdrop the photos that I scan from my iPhone to my iMac. But it only lets me do five at a time. I am hoping there is a way around this. If I could get customer service to get back to me, perhaps these problems could be solved and I would give it a much better rating..Version: 2.4

Reflection ProblemWhen I use the backlight suggested and then hold my phone up to scan the slide the reflection of the back of my cell phone shows up on the photo! I’ve scanned over a hundred slides and you can see the reflection of my phone in the digital photos. I was so excited to scan all my photos but this doesn’t work. I have tried adjusting my display brightness but then it’s not bright enough to scan the slide. Also, the digital pictures are not nearly as sharp and clear as the slides! When I try to zoom in to view the photo it is grainy and blurry. Maybe my phone doesn’t have a good enough camera? I have an iPhone 8..Version: 2.0

BlurryVery poor image quality. I am deleting this app..Version: 3.5

Quality is InconsistentAbout a third of the scans come out good and the other 2/3 are grainy. The pictures look fine on my phone but not very good on my laptop. Be sure to hold the slide 2 inches from the light source. It makes for a better scan but requires 2 steady hands. The app is a bit quirky. They have a feature that starts the scan by voice command, but it doesn’t stay on so for each scan you need to reset this feature. Overall, my feeling is that these slides have been sitting in a box in my garage for years and will never be looked at as slides. I scanned just the best ones and while the quality is questionable, I can look at them easily on my phone and they bring back good memories and a smile to my face..Version: 2.4

Scam?Be careful with this! I downloaded both Slidescan and Filmbox free trials one year ago. Found it of no use to me so decided against keeping it. Now I find my credit card has been charged exactly one year on without my authority. Is this just negligence, or criminal? In either case, I'm due a refund, but it's not clear how I can get one..Version: 3.5

Mixed reviewThe developers clearly have some talent, but marketing and customer service isn’t among them. What are otherwise pretty good apps by photomyne are spoiled by their snotty responses and confusing messaging. I have paid subscriptions to two of their apps - FilmBox and SlideScan. They do a pretty good job of digitizing photos from negatives and slides. I’d like to use their cloud service, but apparently - from all I can gather from their short, snotty responses and referrals back to their faq (which does nothing to answer the questions) you must have a Photomyne Account to do that. And it appears that purchasing one or two photomyne apps and registering both with an email address via their in app purchase, does not constitute having a photomyne account. You *also* need to purchase their Photomyne photo scanning app in order to have access to the cloud storage. Three things are consistent throughout the Photomyne app experience - you can see this in the reviews of all of the Photomyne apps: 1. The apps core functions are well designed. 2. The cost to get the promoted functionality is obscured by the developers almost to the point of being a scam. They will deny this, and further obfuscate their intentions by saying “we clearly told you so” when in fact, nothing is clear. 3. The developers responses are rude and generally unhelpful. I’d give the apps a 4 star rating, the cost is plenty once you figure it out - so that part gets a 2 star rating, and their communications are so bad that overall this barely rates one star..Version: 2.4

Slide scanImages are not sharp and app requires additional payments to remove adds.Version: 3.7

Go get Photomyne suite and save yourself troubleThey let you buy just a membership for one app that does one thing but you’ll want the Photomyne suite once you’re trying to download, etc and ironically you can’t use the same login because it’s different even though it’s all the same company. Customer service is consistent but seems to be one person answering messages at 4am so you won’t get a chat response Generally everything works well but when it doesn’t, it’s really frustrating to pay for something and not have live support.Version: 3.1

Resolution is very low on iPad miniMaybe better on a good phone.. Very difficult to accurately point a tripod mounted iPad to cover the slide. Raising or lowering or rotating tripod head can be confusing and getting the slide oriented portrait or landscape needs to be set and remembered for the next slide. I mounted slide at front of a tube with a LED light shining into and turned room lights off to avoid extraneous light on the front of the slide. Long axis still only 2172 pixels and would not stand zooming in..Version: 3.2

Nice product but not worth buyingBought a light box that said use this app in the instructions and yes its ok but after six slides it won’t allow saving of photos without buying an overpriced annual contract - would have happily paid up to £3.99 for this with basic features but far too expensive for the use a general user will have for it..Version: 3.5

Efficace.

$50 lostThis app seemed a good one but it is NOT I tried with the iPadpro but is quite impossible to have focused images also using a tripod It is much better to make a photo with a canon 90d. Or even an old Sony rx100II And then use an edit program.Version: 3.0

FrustratingI reckon I’ve tried to purchase this 20 times but it’s not working. Also it’s a complete scam that you can only use it on one of your devices and have to pay extra if I want it on my phone and iPad..Version: 2.4

En général c’est très bonBeaucoup de diapositives sont trop foncées. Ça serait vraiment bien de pouvoir les éclaircir. J’espère que le nombre de pixels augmentera. Les photos numérisées seront plus nettes..Version: 3.7

App no longer functional after latest updateI’ve used this app for over a month with an iPhone 13 Pro and the light pad with general success. The backlight causes reflection off of the phone to create a reflection on the slide image itself. I was able to correct this by creating a box around the slide to limit the reflection. However as of tonight the app no longer detects any backlight and can’t seem to focus. I’ve tried turning ambient lights on and off, using the light pad, using a computer screen - nothing seems to work rendering the app useless right after I’ve paid for another month. Extremely dissatisfied..Version: 3.7

Worst app ever!!!Terrible. Please avoid this scamming product. Waste of money!.Version: 2.6
