IFinance 5 for Negative User Reviews

A failing app and supportI have been an iFinance user since version 3; 7 years. I had very few problems with any version through version 4. However, since upgrading to iFinance 5 on both my Macintosh and iPhone, the capabilities of both apps have progressively deteriorated. Late in 2022 the Macintosh app lost its ability to calculate the value of stocks using the shares owned and the market prices. Contact with Synium received "We cannot duplicate that issue" and there it ended. This year the iPhone app also lost its ability to calculate the value of stocks. Now the Macintosh app has lost its ability to correctly add the total value of assets which have been designated in the app to be included. This time contact with Synium received; "There some customers who experienced this while using a VPN or firewall that block server connections. We just got a few cases where the customer seems to not use any of those and still got this issue but we were never able to recreate it. However, we will try to improve this with one of the next updates." Updates to both came in today (6Mar24), but these still issues persist. I tried removing and downloading the apps to no avail. In fact I get the same problems if I enter stock data in their "Demo" sample app..Version: 5.1.9

This is the pitsI have loved this app over the years. This version is the easiest to use and setup yet. The problem is that the programmers take some time to catch up when there is an IOS update. The app appeared to work at first but didn’t update from the bank properly. They came out with an update after a week or so and all appeared to work properly. With the latest IOS update the app has ceased to update from the bank. Without bank update that are reliable THE APP IS USELESS!! Please get with it and keep up with the updates. Totally unhappy customer.Version: 5.0.12

Don't addNothing but trouble trying to set up..Version: 5.0.24

ReviewHave set this up a dozen times, this weekend, and it is totally unstable. The online connection works maybe once in each 5 times, then the commection is lost and not recovered. No response at all from support - basically this is a useless product.Version: 5.0.23

It's messed upCompared to Ifinance4 this is a disaster. Import QFX does not work as smoothly as 4, have to input the target account every time, 4 remembered which account it was assigned to. Csv import is similar. Column headings do not match. The general presentation is more cluttered, Data base migration does not migrate catagory assignments. This is the first backwards step!.Version: 5.0.12

Not completeNeeds Bill Payment Organizer or Calendar to track everything in one place.Version: 5.0.28

Currency problemI've been using two currencies USDollar and New Taiwan Dollar in iFinance 4, there is no New Taiwan Dollar in iFinance 5, so total assets is not able th display. Please review and corret asap..Version: 5.0.11

Buyer BewareOnce you buy the program, you still cannot connect any of your accounts without purchasing a recurring subscription from Synium. Would be nice to know the program is useless without additional cost before extracting the purchase price..Version: 5.0.21

Difficult to UseI found this program to be user unfriendly. I could not get correct balances, statements, or reconciliations. I wrote the company, deleted the accounts. And then tried to load my accounts once more with no success. I have cancelled this program altogether. Truly not worth my time or money. Hoping Intuit brings Quickbooks to imac. Much easier to use..Version: 5.1.4

DisappointingI've been an iFinance user through 'many' iterations. I've only just returned for Version 5, and there's still so much that is difficult about the app. One example, I'm trying to edit one of my contacts to have an icon. What a nightmare... Something SO SIMPLE... yet, searching the 'help' files there is not one reference to the 'size' the icon must be to fit in the window... I've spent far too much time, using a heavy duty photo editing app, to try and try again, to fit my icon into the window... I've done it, but man... what a drag!!! And this is but ONE issue... I have so many it seems... Not impressed!!!.Version: 5.0.17

WELL....I love the interface, the color, layout... BUT its so annoying in many ways I found it so much clunckier and difficult than the previous one (4), that I decided to go back. Most annoying: even though network discovery is definetely enabled both on Mac and iPhone, the systems do NOT see each other via WiFi, and yes, of course since I am working at home, they are both logged into the same WiFi..Version: 5.0.17

Could do betterI've used this and its earlier versions for around 10 years. It has more functionality than I need just to give me a vague idea of how I spend money. Dispite my simple needs it makes a meal of importing CSV files of bank data leaving me to select only recent transactions and invert amounts. It has crashed several times loosing recent data so remember to save regularly..Version: 5.1.9

A backwards step and buggyCloud sync stopped working, I had to revert to WiFi sync. Cloud sync can have issues since repeat rules can causes the database in iCloud to be overriden beforfe it is pulled down. When syncing, sometimes the repeat rules get repeated and you need to remove entries. Previously you could search for contacts and payee in one go, now you have to press the icon to search contacts. The Entry field now only searches payee. .00 removed from amount entry. If you change a repeat rule to never, it removes old entries. This is different to the behaviour in iFinance 4 and is quite dangerous. I removed the database and resynced to fix the issue. If you do not meed to upgrade, I would suggest sticky with iFinance 4. This really is a poor upgrade. The only reason I upgraded was because I also wanted the Mac OS desktop app, I wish I had never bothered..Version: 5.0.24

Waste of timePlain does not connect to any bank account.Version: 5.0.11

Charges RentBull crap that you have to pay for this app AND then pay for another service (Synium who made this app I believe) in order to link accounts. Other fin apps I’ve used don’t do this.Version: 5.0.11

Nice butNot as good as its predecessor - the shortcomings of the previous version have surely been taken into account and Synium have tried to improve them. However, sync process creates discrepancies and the interface is just not as good as the iFinance 4 version..Version: 5.0.18

Quite a changeHave to get used to the new method of reconcilling bank statements in the MAC here in Australia. The zoom function is dissappointing in that it does not enlarge the text. The database manager is cumbersome, and the 'open' word is very small. New entries with a very small ' ' on the top and the split also so small. Would be good if it is bold and larger or if the zoom actually worked. I was so used to having it clearly at the bottom in version 4. Its a shame that the software was changed so much..Version: 5.0.12

Poor functionalityIt would be good to be able to categorise accounts (credit cards, Bank accounts, Loans etc). It would also be useful to be able to schedule income and expenses, against a bank account or credit card, and see a calendar of bills coming up against bank or credit card balances, to ensure funds are available against the nominated account. That would make this a true finance program rather than a slightly dressed-up excel spreasheet. Very disappointing .... I want my money back!.Version: 5.1.8

AwfulI am already regretting the upgrade. Has mangled my iFinance 4 records and I have no idea how to re-import an iFinance 4 archive. A complete waste of money and time, neither of which I have in large supply..Version: 5.0.28

Prior Version Was betterThe prior verision had a well designed reconciliation feature. It doesn't exist in this version..Version: 5.1.4

IFinance 4 is much betterThis is a backwards step in interface terms. It is much harder to see in dark mode than the old iFinance 4, font seems smaller, layoout more cluttered. You have to manually enter -/ . Many of the helpful shortcut assists and buttons are now missing. Also trying and failing to give some kind of 1980s vibe at the launch menu. Wish I hadn't bothered at this point - too late now. So if you have iFinance 4, skip 5 unless you need it for compatilibility reasons. I would only adopt if they improve it..Version: 5.0.11

Bugs"view Today" doesn't work if type a specific word in "search" textbox figures have a too small text size missing ability to personalise (left) sidebar menu: give the usert to chose keep it on the left or at the bottom as previous version.Version: 5.0.21

Not ready for US MarketPros: Simple/clean interface. Cons: Online connectivity to accounts: * Uses Plaid - $7 bucks per month * Plaid doesn't play nice with Chase, so those accounts won't import. * Retirement accounts (Empower) also can't be imported via Plaid. * EU currency symbol attached to US dollar amounts. Not a big deal, and it's a 1:1 currency exchange at the moment, but amounts should denote in $. * Again, it's 7 bucks a month for online connectivity..Version: 5.0.5

Update iFinance4 to iFinance5Way too many bugs. can't see any improvements. lost screen viewing width. many issues trying to get back to where I was in 4. may go back to iFinance 4. and worst of all. WHY do I have to pay for an update anyway? :(.Version: 5.0.6

Interface & Manual are awfulAfter wasting 3 hours getting nowhere & no in-sreen explanations of Plaid & how it works, I gave up & renewed my Quicken membership. Bloody awful software. Sorry for the brutal honesty..Version: 5.1.4

Open bankingIt was a big disappointment to discover that this app doesn’t support open banking in the UK, with automatic transaction downloads. There are free alternatives available, albeit without all the tools that iFinance provides. It could be a very useful app if it caught up with the market and offered open banking capabilities..Version: 5.0.24

Good but could be betterMissing a few good features from iFinance 4, would be good to see this updated based on reviews. - No top 5 categories screen as standard - no overall balance, only a chart to show the particular accounts balance. - Entering a value is now much more difficult, tab does not always jump to the next box; and when a minus figure is in it works as general math. -£2.00 which I used to be able to type "2-0.5" to get to £1.50. Now does a -2-0.5==-£2.50 (this is accurate math yes, but makes a good feature more difficult to use. (example, someone sends me half for something I half it on the app). Overall good in ways, but I would prefer to use iFinance 4 at this point. Sadly it had started crashing for me forcing me to move to 5..Version: 5.0.18

IFinance 5Need a lot of improvements. It is hard to read, writing is to small with no option to make fond biger. Why they moved the menu bar on leftside? Now is les space for account view. I was thinking that they did some improvements to iFinance 4 but they actualy downgreated it..Version: 5.0.12

Poor ProductHorrible look and feel. Sync overwrites activities Not intuitive Sync fails bacuse the mobile app doesnt hold the screen from locking.Version: 5.0.24

Poorly conceived, poorly implementedI used to have good will for the publisher of iFinance. They filtered it ALL away with this app. The trial version isn't. To see if this app will connect with your accounts, you have to buy it. Spoiler: It didn't. But wait! You also have to pay for a subscription to keep the data coming. You do get a free trial week AFTER you have paid for the app, but subsequently, you get dinged on a monthly or annual basis to keep your bank accounts up to date. Even if this app were not a huge cheat, it's not reliable. As others have noted, it keeps switching accounts to be based in Euros. If you manage to connect with an account, dont assume that iFinance will fetch your data reliably. Synium have published some decent software, but this one is a dog. Stay away..Version: 5.0.23

Buggy, reduced functionality, slowI have already sent my report on V.5 to ~Synium, but thought I'd post it here to warn others who might be about to "upgrade", if you can call it that. v.5 is very slow to start up. The database window appears immediately, but it takes 60 seconds or more to open the database file. Once database file is opened, v.5 can be unresponsive to keyboard and mouse. So far I can fix this only by closing the database file and reopening it. Selecting more than one OFX file in the finder and asking to open them in iFinance 5 doesn’t work anymore: only one of the files is actually opened. The delete key no longer deletes the selected transaction(s). This morning, all debit transactions in all accounts in the database I have opened are displayed as £0.00. However, they are displayed correctly in the details pane of a selected transaction, and the balance is correct. Neither closing and reopening the file, nor quitting and restarting the app fixes this. In the dialog that appears when importing a downloaded transaction file, there is a column titled “Payee/Payer”. This should surely be “Contact” to be consistent with the account display. The field mapping shown in the import dialog does not always correspond to the way the fields are imported, as illustrated by the two screenshots below. As others have noted, manual account reconciliation is no longer possible, which disadvantages users for whom automatic bank downloads are possible. I can’t rely on iFinance 5 in its current condition, so I have reverted to v.4 until v.5 is significantly improved and reliable, and the above missing features restored. Fortunately, I discovered these defects before committing to v.5, so returning to v.4 was still an option. Steer clear of iFinance 5, and approach any new releases with caution..Version: 5.0.5

Bad reconciliation processThe application is very nice. However, the developers have no idea of finance. Specifically, in an effort to make the reconciliation as friendly as possible, they have made it as dum as it can be to the point to be useless. The process was bad in version 4 but now users cannot even know what values need to be reconciled because there is no place to enter the beginning and ending balances given by the financial institutions. Then, how can a user know if all values have been reconciled? The only way is by pulling a statement from the financial institution. The reconciliation should not be a "rolling" process, which is what the developers have done. Reconciliation should be isolated process for each reconciling period..Version: 5.0.25

Concerning Pop Up AdsI used to like this software and have previously written positivly about it. It's a little clunky but has a good level of sophstication for someone wanting reasonable home accounting finance without the hassle of formal double entry bookeeping. But - since the start of 2024 I have been getting pop up advertisements every time I open the software. I'm not sure why, or even how. I don't use any of IFinance online services and I don't even have an online account set up - so how did they get access to the software on my computer to be able to install these advertisements? I have contacted Synium about this using their online contact forms twice but with no response. So until they at lest start talking to me about this they have a one star review as this is a worrying infringement of privacy..Version: 5.1.4

No Online Accounts in UKThe fact that customers based in the UK can't retreive transactions from the bank directly is puzzling and not made clear in this app's description..Version: 5.1.2

Still usingI wanted to move away and tried lots of the other options but keep coming back to iFinance. The interface is so much better compared to the others. Some frustrating bugs that don't seem to get fixed no mater how many times I raise a support query. I always add transactions manually so have never cared about no automatic download options.Version: 5.0.28

BEWARE OF DATABASE CORRUPTION WHEN SYNCINGIFinance 5, and its predecessor iFinance 4, are very fine apps - with one VERY IMPORTANT EXCEPTION. Do not rely on the sync function. In preparing to switch to a mobile office situation as i was about to travel for a month, i obviously synced iMac desktop with MacbookPro laptop, and iPad Pro devices. The result was very sluggish performance on all devices - i mean a multiple-minute wait to get the transaction screen displayed - not just a few minutes, but 10 or 20 minutes! This renders the app essentially unusable. After reaching out to Synium (Florian) there is nothing they can or will do to assist/fix unless i send them my database of transactions - well, that i cannot do for security reasons, obviously. I eventually figured out that the syncing process made hundreds of copies of the file/s i had attached to my transactions (the actual invoices/receipts). In total this amounted to so much data that the app needed to 'acquire' on startup that the time delay was such as to make the app essentially unusable. A solution is to delete the file repetitions but that is very tedious as the is no means by which to <select all> files and invoking a 'bulk' delete. Another solution would be for Synium to provide some function to manage the repeated files - essentially this would be just reversing the creation of the replication that occurred during syncing. Yet another possibility is to use another app - and this is eventually what Synium/Florian suggested. In summary, SYNCING IS FLAWED and CANNOT BE RELIED UPON. For heavens sakes, make a backup immediately before each sync and then check if your database is usable on each device immediately after each sync. That would be my advice to all you good folks. If you don't like that approach, get Synium to fix its app, or move to a more rugged and reliable software artefact. Good luck. The above is pertinent to April/May 2023 timeframe. -------- end -----.Version: 5.0.25

Really Unhappy SyniumIFinance 4 and its previous versions are pretty reliable. Finance applications have to be. Sadly the upgrade to V5 seems to have broken just about everything that was good. I am sure things will get better, but right now do not commit your time to this application..Version: 5.0.21

Data keeps deleting from accountsThis is a good app in principle but I keep loosing data that I have manually downloaded to accounts. Really annoying after you have spent time categorising spending to find it all missing next time you open the program. Have sent a message to the tech support but no reply. Based on the problems I am having this program is not worth spending money on..Version: 5.1.6

Not able to sync between my mac and iphone & tabletThe synchronization feature that I value most is completely not working! It used to work and I could "enable network discovery" and sync data for all devices, but now I can only use it on my Mac and can't sync it to my iPhones (both iPhone 7 and iPhone 11) and iPad 8. To be honest, this app is useless even with now the discounted price of $16.99. I would like to enter an expense on the go, but now it's not working. I stuck with using only my Mac. Please fix this immediately. I have had this syncing issue with this app for at least 4 months (since Sep 2022), and was hoping someone might report this same issue and it will get fixed. However, after so long without a solution, I decided that I will write this review to get my message across. I don't usually write reviews, but I felt I really have the need to do so now!.Version: 5.0.21

Still need a proper fix since oct 2023Fix the date thing so its easier to see and select 'TODAYS" date. someone people input cost as forcasting or a payment date changed. make the calander date thing with 'today' and make it easier to see which date is selected. thanks. -aug 2022.Version: 5.0.28

Hardly worth itThe software itself is unreliable on an ongoing basis. The software is also unreliable as part as imported data is concerned. I had imported several years worth of data and categorized it. iFInance scrambled it. Finally, its connection to Plaid to bank accounts is even more unreliable. I understand that Mint must have been a money-loser, and it was shut down for that reason, but while it worked, Mint was head and shoulders above this software..Version: 5.1.8

Paid app and then they hit you with a subscription!!Don’t buy this app unless your comfortable paying a monthly subscription. Rip off!.Version: 5.0.18

Won’t update accountI tried and tried. But nothing happens. It download the first 30 days od transactions but none after that. Disgusted at this point want money back..Version: 5.0.12

IFinance August 2023 ReviewNot happy with the fact that every few weeks I must re-establish my purchase that I have made for a years services. I am looking at my accounts multiple times a week, enough to validate who I am I would think. I also am confused by different wording about my current paid up status that does not tell me that I am paid but asks if I want to make a change to premium, when I have had Premium in the past/currently. Also, I use Apple sign-in and sometimes it works and sometimes it fials. That is confusing, and irritating..Version: 5.0.28

No longer worksStopped working for iOS17.Version: 5.0.28

Unreliable and TemperamentalI loaded the iPad version of iFinance 5. I live in Canada. The interface was an unprofessional pink colour. After syncing my bank transactions, Canadian dollars switched to euros even though I had set the app for Canadian dollars. I spent twenty minutes of my time to switched the euros back to Canadian dollars and I made sure the default remained set at Canadian dollars. A short time later, the currency changed to euros again. Syncing with Tangerine Bank caused the app to crash. I gave up after several retries. A Waste of time and money..Version: 5.0.23

Backward stepThe purchase of version 5 has been a backward step for me and so will continue with version 4 until I see some improvement..Version: 5.0.22

Paying for online service?Well, that was a waste of money. I've never had to pay to use Plaid anywhere else - and I won't start now..Version: 5.0.11

Too buggy for releaseThis should not been released in its current form, it's far too buggy. Synchronising via Wi-Fi commonly results in data loss, where it decides to overwrite more recent changes (e.g. dates, etc.) with older data. iCloud sync remains very poor, as it was in V4, and also results in similar data loss. As others have pointed out, it's also become annoyingly slow to use. Avoid this version until such times as it is fixed..Version: 5.0.6

Generally pretty uselessSlow, almost no real useful info other than showing me the transactions. Subscription required for an additional 6/month or 40/yr to get your transactions from your accounts into this program..Version: 5.0.17

Not as good as the old versionSeems to have been an upgrade for upgrading's sake. There is no facility to manually reconcile a bank statment if your banking provider doesn't do online statments. All you can do is load a pdf copy into the app for reference. Thus bloating the database. It is possible to manually reconcile transactions but you cant reconcile them against a statement total The upgrade was rather a waste of money really presumable someone thought it out to look more "whizzy wig" and swish. It certainly doesn't seem to cater for UK customers in a sound bite "waste of money".Version: 5.0.27

Back to version 4I went back to version 4, as it's easier to use and to read. I also miss the 3 letter abreviation next to the date in the daily summary row. I had hoped that there would be new icons as category symbols, but no such luck. The Comment field used to be directly below the Category drop-down box, but now Tags and Check Number come before the Commets - I only use Comments. The date pickers are over-engineerd, as are the amount plus/minus and the Payee/Payer edit feature. But the Repeat Transactions appear to have been made simpler to understand..Version: 5.0.4

Down loadQuicken on MAC does not save it QIF file the same as Microsoft. Unable to find way to tranfer Quicken MAC to program..Version: 5.0.14

IFinance5 Changes seem unnecessaryRather a large set of changes, and some really useful functions from 4 appear to be missing, e.g. the indication of icloud updates being completed. All in all one wonders why the changes were needed..Version: 5.0.16

Where’s the legit updateApp still in beta mode. Need some good updates guys.Version: 5.0.21

Lots to like BUTTransactions for a single date are displayed in a completely random order, and it's impossible to change it. The final balance for the day is unidentifiable because it isn't at the bottom of the day list but somewhere in the middle. And several other minor irritations..Version: 5.0.19

More of a point release, than a full upgradeFirstly - paying for an upgrade - big no! Especially when the product still has the same look and feel that 4 (and 3!) had - which is good I suppose, in that you will find it easy and intuitive to use. But personally I find it slower and more clunky in many respects. 3 point releases in 2 days, suggests that the testing was not robust. When 6 comes out I won't be falling for the payment swindle (not saying scam - yet!) again..Version: 5.0.3

Terrible UpgradeI have been using iFinance4 as long as it has been out. It worked perfectly. The new iFinance5 is a desaster. I downloaded it, paid the subscription and registered my bank accounts with Plaid. The app doesn't refresh the bank account data. It says it is connected with the bank via Plaid but the data only refreshed the first time I used the app, after that, I can't get it to refresh. It has a setting to tell it to refresh upon opening, however; that setting will not work, it only stays on manual. THIS IS THE PITS - I used to love iFinance but now it's usless!.Version: 5.0.12

Not completeThis app in order to be the best of the best needs a calendar for bill tracker and needs to keep track of loans(Mortgage).Version: 5.1.1

Not what I expectedSeems like the transactions don't update like they are suppose to, even after connecting my accounts and paying not only for the app, but also the subscription service in the app for Plaid. I reached out to the developers and mentioned my issues, they did reply very quickly, but the update they added still didn't fix the issue. Seems like this app would worl for anyone that is dealing with raw files, but for people who want it directly connected to their banks, credit cards, etc. I would look else where..Version: 5.1.2
