Collins Italian-English for Negative User Reviews

Icon? What? So, three years after ruining the app with an update, this week you finally fix an issue that should never have been seen. Every time I opened the app it paused all audio, and I put up with this for three years. Finally, you’ve now fixed it. Yet now you’ve given me this ugly and nondescript icon that means nothing. The old one was clean and clear. Change is good only when it improves things, change for the sake of change is not. This is an expensive app, it should work perfectly and be completely polished. Sort it out.Version: 2.8

Collins Italian English DictionaryI use this when I'm watching Italian TV, and there are many common words missing. Furthermore, about every ten entries, it crashes. Also wish it had audio as there are many times, when phonetic component is not sufficient. Then, I must resort to free app that works like a charm. However, much better, if it were all in one spot. However, shortcomings aside, it trumps using a cumbersome hardcover version. The verb conjugations also eliminates the need for a dedicated verb book. Make improvements and I'll be in heaven..Version: 1.5.2

Mistakes and supportThe conjugation for "succedere" is incorrect - using avere as auxiliary instead of essere. I don't bother to contact the developer since Collins and Ultralingua gave me the run-around last time I reported an error: Quote Collins: "We do not produce iPhone applications in house, rather we license them to third party developers. We would recommend contacting the developer directly. The information on the developer can be found on the product page on iTunes, under the pricing details. Kind regards Collins Language Dept" Quote Ultralingua: " Unfortunately, the Collins dictionaries aren't as responsive because the data is managed by the publisher HarperCollins and is licensed by Ultralingua. We'll be sure to inform HarperCollins of your finding, although a fix will likely not be forthcoming very soon.".Version: 1.4.3

What have you done? Not an improvement. Please reinstate previous version. Ghastly font and not always helpful. The previous version enemy impressed my Italian teacher who is a native speaker..Version: 2.3

Horrible updateHate the update from Ultralingua! If I'd noticed it was no longer Collins I would not have updated. I've lost all the words I looked up in the original version. Having paid £20 for the original, I feel really cheated with this version I now have. I used Collins paper dictionaries for decades and knew I could rely on them as much as you can with any bilingual dictionary. I was completely happy with the original app, but I'll be looking for another dictionary now..Version: 2.3

Terrible updateWhy has this update been released? Just so that it fits a taller screen? If so, the developers need to get a grip. This app has a significant flaw in that the screen doesn't rotate and the keyboard is permanently at 90 degrees to the screen. This is mentioned on App Store and apparently they are working on fixing it. Frankly, the update shouldn't have been released until this bug was sorted. It's an expensive (and otherwise excellent app) and I expect better..Version: 1.5.3

More expensive does not necessarily equal better quality!!While it is true that this app. delivers on everything that it promises, I would not recommend that anyone download it as it is, in my opinion, far inferior to similar apps. that I have downloaded and which are free of charge. The 'Wordreference' app., for example, is much simpler to use and seems to me to have a broader range of words, more accurate conjugation etc... Please don't waste your money. At least try 'Wordreference' or similar first. I made the mistake of equating expense to quality, thereby wasting $30!.Version: 0

A good dictionary...Been using it for a few days and holds up very well as a portable dictionary. I particulary like the verb conjugator and number / word generator. It's pricey (maybe as there's no real competition at this level) when compared to Collins gem pocket Italian dictionary (£4.99 in any bookshop.) So it would be nice to see updates with new features including a "favourites" to store all those "irregular verbs" and speech synthesis to hear pronunciation to make good use of the iPhone platform. So I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars! Buon Fortuna!.Version: 0

Inexcusable$25. The app structure is terrible - visually disorganized, forcing you to wade through text to find what you're looking for. Often requires typing the word out fully, with perfect spelling, in order to pull up a result. Includes no reflexive verbs, which differ in meaning. Often excludes important context for compound tenses - sometimes verbs use different auxiliary verbs depending upon meaning. Example: cominciare uses essere for pp when intransitive, but avere for transitive. Ingrassare means to fatten or gain weight - with avere, it would mean you're fattening something else up. Gaining weight would require essere. Piovere may use either, though the app shows only one. I repeat, $25 for a messy, incomplete and sometimes incorrect app. Not happy..Version: 2.7

Only verbs and very expensiveThis advertises itself as a complete dictionary, but it only does verbs. It’s completely stupid and a total rip off..Version: 2.8

Latest update crashes a lotCrashes on about 1 in 10 lookups now, or doesn't crash but shows a blank screen. Otherwise, I would give this app 4/5. Some more minor annoyances: – if you highlight a word and look it up, the app often searches the wrong side of the dictionary. – labels, e.g "Comput" for a Computer word are not formatted any differently from the translation – there is no key to abbreviations used – verb conjugation (very useful!) doesn't remember the tense you last used..Version: 1.5.1

OkThis app is pretty good but there are still a couple problems. 1) You should be able to type in an English word into the conjugation search bar and be able to get the Italian infinitive. This should also go the other way for Italian to English. ex. To go - andare To be - essere To clean - pulire 2) When you conjugate a verb in either language and want to change the tense you should be able to see the name of the tense in both languages. ex. Present (the Italian word for present) Past (the Italian word for past) Past perfect (the Italian words for past perfect) 3) This does not truly matter, but I would like to be able to use this app sideways on my iPod. 4) The price is pretty high, but it is a pretty good app. If you did decide to lower it I would not lower it much. Maybe to $20 or so (I would not go any lower than that), but this would not affect me since I have already bought the app and do not plan on deleting it. This was only an idea for getting more customers..Version: 0

What's with the awful icon?See title.Version: 2.8

Not much of a dictionaryThis dictionary doesn’t cover the language well. I’m reading Il Gattopardo and having much better luck looking up words in the free WordReference dictionary than in the Collins. The Collins doesn’t even have all the words in the average article in Corriera della Sera. What’s it actually good for?.Version: 2.10

Disgusting. Ripped Off TotallyRestore our original version urgently. We paid a lot of money for it and the way we have been treated is absolutely disgusting. Nothing like the original, which we loved. Do not purchase this app until the original version is restored. Total waste of £15.00..Version: 2.3

Good, But Not ConciseI have been learning Italian in a class for 4 years now and have used many different dictionary apps (free and paid). None of them are perfect and it’s hard to get one that does everything an Italian-English dictionary should do. This *seems* to be free of grammatical errors, but it lacks (at the time of writing) something which is an egregious oversight on the developer’s part - NO CONJUGATION FOR REFLEXIVE VERBS! Anyone who learns Italian in a class will come across reflexive verbs at some point as a beginner. Scary as they are, the most basic introduction verb taught to beginners is lavarsi (to wash oneself). I looked this up in this dictionary and it was there, indicated as riflessivo, but WITHOUT CONJUGATION! So I looked up some other Italian reflexive verbs and none of them have any conjugation for mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si. This really devalues the high asking price for this app as reflexive conjugation is essential and believe me, the Italian language throws up reflexives all the time. This needs rectifying immediately. Furthermore, on normal verb conjugation the formal Lei has been omitted from the lui/lei conjugation. In the 21st century, not all Italians automatically ‘give the tu’ and there are many situations where you will be spoken to using formal verbs. Stuff like this needs to be sorted out as I assumed such oversights would not exist for the price! I am considering asking for a refund now, but I’ve raised the issue with support and if they indicate the dictionary will be improved I’ll keep it..Version: 2.9

Please Update! The app is getting slow. Please update it to iOS 11..Version: 2.7

Collins Italian DictionaryI thoroughly endorse the feelings of the reviewer who called this a 'horrible update.' Please bring back a.s.a.p. the Collins Italian Dictionary app for which I paid £20..Version: 2.3

MsI am very disappointed in the update. It is not an improvement and I miss the previous more detailed information about the use of words in various contexts when translated.Version: 2.3

It doesn't work any moreWell, I wish I could agree with Adam. Since the new version was released,it won't open on my iPhone. When it was working it was a good app. I've notified Ultralingua of the problem..Version: 2.4.1

What happened? This used to be the best dictionary on the App Store but the developers (new owners?) have decided to kill the most useful functions such as conjugations. I'm truly wondering if this is even legal given the fact that I paid for a fully functional and very useful dictionary in the first place. Now I have an ugly looking, crippled app that I will never use..Version: 2.3

A suggestion for improvementWhenever I press the erase button in the search window, I hit the change language button. Please move the change language button more toward the words Italian/English. I hope this makes to other users and especially the vendor..Version: 2.3

LimitedColour for detailed definitions poor . No speaker pronunciation available. Expensive for what it is..Version: 2.10

Ultralingua UpdateWhat a disappointing update. Why change something that worked so well? How do I get my money back for what I originally paid for?.Version: 2.3

Upgrade has slowed this downBefore the latest upgrade this app was much snappier and easier to use. This version for iPad for me is clunky and has an annoying lag which means the characters don't appear as rapidly as they are typed. I won't be upgrading the app on my iPod Touch for this reason. Perhaps there will be an update to get it back to the previous speed of use?.Version: 1.4

Better beforeSince the "upgrade" this app is more difficult to use, requiring more "strokes" to find/get what you want. Also, the fancy lettering is distracting. They have removed the names of the tenses in the language being used, replacing them with the English equivalents, which is NOT helpful when the tense names are different than English. Looks like they tried to,make it look more streamlined, but all they did was make it fancy and harder to us. Please remember the KISS principle!.Version: 2.3

Collins dictionaryThe change is terrible. I hate it..Version: 2.3

Lack of important information at such a priceAfter a term of Italian study I was doing a bit review. The text book is 'Chiaro'. On the title page of the 2nd chapter something annoyed me. What it was is that I could not figure out the exact meaning of the word 'parlane' as in 'Parlane con un compagno'. I would imagine it got something to do with 'parlare' but in what way? I could not find it in other free dictionaries nor on Google so I thought I should get a better reference book. I bought this one and found myself screwed. Collins does not have the information I wanted either. I searched on Google again for like 30 minutes and after so many wrong directions and finally found my answer. Turns out parlane= ne parla =(you) talk about it. The meaning of that sentence is talk about it with a classmate. Yes may be I am too fussy but the point is , the whole idea to spend 30 something dollars on this is i want something better than the free ones. I want the answers ready for me. I don't want to go to google every time. As a beginner i found that with my limited Italian it's very hard for me to get the information I wanted. But turns out this dictionary isn't much(or any) better than the free dictionaries out there. So anyone who is reading this, don't throw your money down the drain like me. Just get a free dictionary. If it is not enough, most likely Collins can't help you either. Just go to google..Version: 2.6

Needs interface workThe dictionary itself deserves 4.5 stars: Ultralingua's interface is not well-thought-through. How do you use a bilingual dictionary? First, you almost always use it in one direction. So making it way too easy to reverse direction by putting the toggle too near another far more frequently used button is a serious design flaw. Second: Once you've looked up a word, you don't use the interface again until you need to look up another. So it ought to require minimum effort to start a new search. With the Ultralingua interface, you first must go to the upper right corner of the display to clear the (tiny) search box by tapping the (even tinier) "x" inside, then redirect your fingers to the keyboard at the screen bottom. There really needs to be a "clear search box and start a new search" button right next to the keyboard. On the plus side, it's great to have the word-search history window--once you find out that it's there..Version: 2.3

Good product, turned badIt saddens me to write badly about this dictionary. It was good, it׳s now nearly useless. No browsing. No fuzzy search. No wild card search. None of the features that used to be so good. Please restore these immediately. Without them this product is useless..Version: 2.4.2

What a terrible updateIt is such a shame to have messed about with what used to be an excellent Collins Dictionary. The original layout & font were superb and well thought out for linguists to use. The verb table was perfectly organised. I used to highly recommend it to friends, but not now. A suggested improvement that could have been made, would have been to introduce the facility of being able to listen to the pronunciation of a word, which other dictionaries have. I wish it were possible to dismiss the update and go back to how it was before..Version: 2.3

Good but room for improvementEasy interface and information clear. Missing some vocabulary e.g. Fennel. search function could be smarter by making suggestions for minor user spelling mistakes. Does the search have to be either in Italian to English or English to Italian exclusively? Why not both at same time, would make UX faster. Still the go to app on my iPhone. Google translate does a good job when word is not in dictionary..Version: 2.7

Why the icon change?!I don’t understand why then icons were changed. The previous icons provided a powerful context to help me choose which app I needed to use since I own all versions of the Collins library. The new icons are completely useless. Please change the icons back to the original or find an interesting way to show the language of the app..Version: 2.8

MultitaskingIn this version the multitasking got less immediate, please fix it..!!! :).Version: 1.4.3

Disgusted with this treatment - warning - do not purchaseI paid for a dictionary which no longer exists in the form it did previously. This update allows no verb conjugation or other features that the Collins dictionary previously offered. In what marketplace is it reasonable that a product should be so devalued by something termed as an update? I see it is no longer branded as Collins but the 'About' section still calls it that. Treating customers like this is very poor business sense. Please remedy this situation. I have been cheated of a large sum of money..Version: 2.3

Disappointment with this referenceI have two major issues with this reference - my first is a general one in that when you buy an app, prior to purchase you can only ever see a snapshot of the product, which is so limiting a view that you can make an error. And so I did make a big mistake with this dictionary. Which comes to my second issue which is with the presentation of verbs - more specifically reflexive verbs. This dictionary does not display the reflexive pronoun in the verb table (ie you get io alzo - rather than io mi alzo) and I note that the reflexive version of the verb is not listed in the search menu anyway. I would not recommend this dictionary to language students as this omission is a real problem, in my view..Version: 1.4.1

AwfulHugely expensive and not at all user friendly. I would ask for my money back but I don't know how to. I would give it no stars but was forced to give it one.Version: 2.6

Collins italian dictionaryGhastly upgrade. I miss the original very much..Version: 2.3

Awful updateUpdate very, very disappointing. I have stopped using the app. Any possibility of reverting to original version?.Version: 2.3
