MSW Surf Forecast for Negative User Reviews

Great way to plan my weekends….for most spotsSince I live in Seattle, every time I go surfing, I have a choice to surf the straight (northern coast of the Olympic peninsula) or go to the ocean just south of the peninsula. When this app says that Crescent Beach or Twin Rivers is having a 5 star day, it’s a little shorter of a hike for us to get some good waves. There have been a handful of times that we have been skunked just taking this apps ratings heading there. Because the difference is about a 4 hour drive, if we make a wrong decision due to an inaccurate prediction, the day is spent. I understand that it’s hard to predict but it seems like there is information that’s being taken from the coast and applied to the spots on the straight of Juan De Fuca. It can be firing on the coast and dead on the straight depending on swell direction. If more attention could be paid to that, this app would have a 5 star review from me..Version: 7.7.1

What a conThe recent change to remove webcams from people who don’t sign up for their pro subscription is a real error on the part of MSW. With truly poor accuracy on surf predictions already the cams were the key element to checking the surf from a distance without this this app has nothing to offer… ride times and wind can be gained from many other apps/sites as can wave buoy info so I will be cutting out the middle man and deleting this now and I would advise others to also! Luckily I have direct access to one of the 2 cams I mainly use via another web site and I’d encourage all others to search out direct connections wherever possible rather than pay for a subscription! Why do this and lose you advertising revenue? Ridiculous!!!!!!.Version: 7.7.0

InaccurateNever had a problem with Magic Seaweed, couldn’t fault them - their app layout was easy to read/use and the forecast was always accurate. Since MSW have joined Surfline, I’ve had to try look for another app - as Surfline is inaccurate. I live in a city and drove 4 hours (there and back) for no surf at all because the app was wrong. I checked 3 different beaches and each one had an incorrect forecast on the app. I had used Surfline in the past before MSW and had the same problem back then..Version: 7.8.6

Best daily conditionsGood app, I find it’s really easy to read the star features, which makes me think of different locations to surf, and love the different surf breaks to choose from. It’s super intuitive. While not always accurate, it does provide a good starting point of where to look. It would be great if you could find where to find the best surf on the day within a state or a specified km radius from a map point..Version: 7.3.1

Major Beach not listed!I know most people wouldn’t think of Chicago as place were people are using this app but they would be wrong. Paddle boarding/surfing, windsurfing, and Kitesurfing are huge sports here. The rules are strict here as far as where one can “launch” their boards. In fact the two beaches are Montrose beach and North Avenue beach. This is also where we store our equipment. You have North Ave. listed but Montrose beach. This would be in my opinion the best app out there if only Montrose Beach in Chicago was listed which is the Number 2 spot for this sport in Chicago. Is there anything that could be done to add Montrose to app.? Thanks.Version: 6.6.1

Ocean swimmerI use the app to provide an early forecast in swimming conditions to out ocean swimming group. It is usually pretty spot but I also use a second website for comparison and to get the wave energy rating. Would love to see the wave energy rating added here as well!.Version: 7.7.1

Shame on you!I loved this app until you required me to purchase the pro package to view the cameras! Why was it ok to have free access to the cameras for all those years and now it must be purchased? I patiently watched the advertisements and was happy to watch the ads in order to see the live camera feeds. Shame on you for taking that away, especially in this economy. Even a few dollars a month is more than we can afford. It is obvious that you care more about increasing your profits than helping surfers and beach goers know where best to go and enjoy the surf. I have erased your app from my phone; you will no longer have the privilege of my support..Version: 7.7.3

App is deadDon’t bother downloading. Developer, just remove the app?.Version: 7.8.6

Good for beginnersGives good indication of how the wind and swell should be for good surfing at different breaks. Good idea with the star ratings. But… I am in Victoria, Australia. I have found that sometimes the data presented in MSW app does not reflect the actual data the the point nepean bouy is listing. The bouy data on Vic Ports website is better once you know the breaks and how they work. It is nice to have tides/forecast/swell height ect all packed into one app, just seems that the data doesn’t refresh often enough! Also does not account swell direction, not making its way past peninsulas and heads ect, for example point Leo surf break often is listed as 2-3 stars when it is flat..Version: 7.8.2

Feels outdated.Firstly let me say I used to like MSW and still do to a lesser extent. Now unfortunately the adverts are excessive and intrusive much the same as the other app I use from WeeSurf. I think the app Ferris dated compared to others and cluttered. It needs a complete strip back and made cleaner and more user friendly. The app has not really progressed in many years and as a result has been left behind in my opinion. I will not be paying for any subscription again until the are big improvements..Version: 6.5.3

MSW is good, but pays less attention to Texas.I live and surf in Texas where our surf has some hidden gems. You have to be very knowledgeable to know where to find tubes, offshore winds, and quality uncrowded surf. I’ve used MSW for a few years now and noticed that the report is updated pretty frequently - a pro. I’ve also noticed that whoever makes the report doesn’t quite understand how swell hits different spots along the Texas coast - a con. For any surfer who knows something about Texas surf, he knows to pay little mind to MSW’s forecast and to just look at the swell and swell direction. I think that for any forecast everything else is pretty much impossible to predict with any certainty. MSW has plenty of forecasts in surf spots along the Texas coast, but they usually get everything wrong about the descriptions of the spots. Other than usually giving you an idea of when there’s going to be surf, MSW doesn’t really do much else unless it’s about the day before you plan to surf. MSW is easy to use, has a ton of features and cams and is helpful when planning trips. Would definitely recommend to anyone; even though it has its imperfections..Version: 7.7.1

Perth Surf forecasts wave size incorrectPerth Beach Surf forecasts for places like Trigg, Scarborough and Cottesloe need to have the wave size scaled down by 60-70%. The reason is the swell size is taken from offshore readings, however a Perth waves are always at least 1/2 the size due to the blocking effect of the offshore reefs and Rottnest Island. I’ve seen Cottesloe with bigger wave size than Margaret River!.Version: 7.7.3

FreezesOpen the app and it freezes every time won’t let me search or click on anything, it’s been this way for weeks now which is a shame as it was a great app when it worked..Version: 6.9.0

Better than most, but.....This is probably the best forecasting app I have found. But there are a few places along my coastline that it consistently gets way off... Bells Beach is called about 4 ft bigger than the rest of the coast every day of the year.. yes the topography of the bottom at Bells can push swell a bit bigger than other spots nearby and sometimes it is even close to 4 ft bigger but every single day.. it’s just laughable..Version: 7.4.0

ProfiteeringThis is a great app. don’t get me wrong, but the recent change to the service meaning you have to pay £7.99 a month to access cameras, as what was previously free is profiteering pure and simple. I don’t use this app very often but the camera function was a key feature as to why I did and I’m not paying £7.99 a month to use gain access to a camera that I might view for less than 30 seconds at a time a few times a months or less. They claim this is to pay for investment into new cameras but this is simply too much money and I’ll be forced to use a different service. I simply cannot justify paying this amount of money or understand it. Netflix is cheaper and I use that more 1000%. Do better..Version: 7.7.1
