Trainline: Buy train tickets for Negative User Reviews

Beware! App appears to make false purchasesHave not used this terrible app since before 2020 and all credit cards have now expired. Seeking to reserve train tickets now but never purchased any. Then magically nonrefundable tickets with incorrect date appear as purchases; no idea why. Most outrageous flaw is that Apple Pay now appears as valid form of payment though I never added it and obviously it did not exist when i last used this app. I strongly advise against launching this app until developer corrects these serious bugs. IMO Trainline is dishonest and unethical..Version: 279

BuggyConstantly comes up stating there's a connection error, no matter what search criteria I use..Version: 0

UK nightmareTrainline does an exceptionally poor job communicating that when taking trains from EU to UK you need to arrive early and go straight to customs. Because of this I missed my train, along with 20 other people. The station had many attendants ready to handle this, because 20 people miss every train because of this poor messaging. I thus missed my connecting train in London and had to buy a new ticket at 600% the price. Trainline customer support was no help. In fact their phone number just went straight to voice mail regardless of how many times I called, forcing me to use their text chat..Version: 299

Fatal coding errorHere’s a fun trick the app does: say you search for a train ticket for the next day, but you’re conducting a search just before midnight. If, by the time you make your purchase, it’s past midnight, it automatically books the ticket for the following day. So it doesn’t lock in a specific DATE, it uses “tomorrow”. Which is idiotically ambiguous. Then, when you want to reach support; they have no option for that either. So instead I just paid the train company an additional 25 euro to have my ticket changed to the correct day..Version: 144

Give me ORARIOTRENII use OrarioTreni to check and control the time and status of trains in Italy. It has been bought by train line yet TRAINLINE doesn’t give me the features of OrarioTreni. And on iPhone 15, for some reason I am unable to close the prompt to transfer to TRAINLINE. I’m so annoyed that the one app I used daily (ORARIOTRENI) is no unavailable to me. And train line is not a substitute for me. I’m sitting on a train now, wanting the live status of my train. It doesn’t help me…...Version: 310

AWFUL DO NOT USEThe app threw in random other stops into my search results so I accidentally booked the wrong destination station. Could not exchange my or ticket or change it even though I called within minutes of booking it. Ended up wasting 40 euros for a bad and confusing interface and a company that won’t honor its own exchange policy. Absolutely terrible and unacceptable..Version: 297

Not user friendlyNot able to purchase multiple journeys in one go so you get hit for double booking fee and double c/card charge - a proper rip-off..Version: 3.3.2

Doesn’t give good seatsThis is my second review today. First train was a bad seat but at least it faced forward. I requested a single seat in first class facing forward. This time I have the window seat at a table with three strangers in standard class and I’m backwards. Didn’t get even one thing right. I thought the app worked great and was easy to use. I liked that a link to my ticket appeared on my phone this morning. But I’ll delete it and just book direct with the train company next time. Or at least give the opportunity to pick our own seat cause this sucks..Version: 230

Rip off pricesI spent a weekend in England using this app and spent hundreds. Of dollars using the train system. I just got back to England and realized I could have taken all of those trains for pennys on the dollar and maybe spent 100 dollars instead of over 600 by using the tap method at the stations or buying the tickets from the kiosks. Would not recommend this app unless you know what the prices should be and can compare yourself..Version: 250

Charged me twice and didn’t send me the ticketI booked a bus for today and never received my ticket. They also charged me twice, the ticket shows with an amount of 23 euros, but the charge was of 70 Canadian dollars. I requested a refund and they offer 15 euros. Ridiculous!.Version: 294

Train websiteHad a very difficult experience trying to change a ticket previously booked earlier in the day. The website would not accept password that it had previously accepted when booking. I was told to use Forgot Password option, that didn’t work, phone in for help and got a Parkistan call Centre, English heavily accented and difficult. Only option was to re-book tickets and apply for a refund, colossal pain and would not wish it on anyone. Get real you guys..Version: 89

Great app, BUT...Let’s face it, the app is brilliant. It’s intuitive, it’s clean, it’s reliable and it holds your e-tickets or sticks them in your Apple wallet. Sadly, it’s for a company that charges a booking fee, which you may well accept on the basis that it’s for a nice service, but just think, every time your train is cancelled, they’ll rob you of that booking fee, and they’ll do the same to everyone else who would have been travelling. So imagine they sold every ticket on that train, and let’s imagine it’s a Grand Central service of 268 seats, and there are four services per day for a month, per line, over four lines, five days a week, all cancelled due to COVID restrictions reducing profitability, and everyone got charged the same £1.75 booking fee, that’s £163,000 a month smashed into the biscuits and cake fund whilst all those people have to cancel arrangements, pay for Uber, parking, wherever. Of course I’m being ridiculous, and it’s a lot more that that. Don’t bother, and use Trainpal instead..Version: 173

Doesn’t work, goodbye TrainlineI have not managed to buy a ticket on the Trainline app or website for well over a 1.5yrs. Every single time I try, either on the app or website, no matter which payment method I use or how many times I reinstall, restart, wipe and re-enter my payment details, I get an error - the current one says ‘this is awkward’ whereas the earlier one was an ‘oops’. I am glad I don’t have to use the train as much as I used to, because I’m forced to fork out full price at the ticket machine instead of saving money, every single time. Clearly there is a serious problem somewhere deep within the server that affects individual accounts, given I’m not the only one having issues but others can buy tickets no problem. Goodbye Trainline, I will be deleting my now-useless account because it’s obvious this is an issue which will never be investigated or fixed. (I have contacted customer support about this several times already but it’s clear nothing has been done)..Version: 204

Hot GarbageWe purchased multiple tickets through their system. Some tickets came through email as an attachment for iwallet which worked GREAT. Other tickets came through as a link to the app. These (1) had different train times in the header than for the body of the ticket and (2) didn't always show up on the app but as a download to print or just not at all. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this system. It’s confusing, inaccurate, and just an all-around frustration for my wife and I. Zero stars..Version: 282

They keep cancelling my booking and won’t resolve the issueI booked trains from London to Germany for Christmas and they took the money out of my account and then cancelled the tickets. I contacted their customer support but they can’t help with tickets to Europe. Grand ! Now I am left without money and tickets to go home for Christmas and by the time I get a refund ticket prices will be up by a lot! Update: I got the money back and was told this rarely happens and not to reserve seats . I tried to book tickets again and the same thing happened AGAIN. Trainline has been absolutely unhelpful in getting me the tickets they offer on their website / app. The total price for a comparable journey went up from 186£ to 240£ as well. How are people supposed to fly less and be environmentally friendly when booking a train home is IMPOSSIBLE and expensive and booking a flight takes about 10min :(.Version: 111

DisappointedVery disappointed - cannot Open the pdf to access my tickets in the app. Much simpler to just use the email with attached tickets..Version: 233

Extremely disappointedMy baggage was delayed at the airport, which made me miss my coach. There’s a section on the app to change or amend the ticket which Has to be done before the journey and it does not work. It kept saying sorry. Somethings gone wrong. Sorry somethings gone wrong. You could do everything else on the app but you couldn’t do that.(haha reminds me of a song) anyway very annoying and extremely disappointing.Version: 254

Train ticket needs more infoTrain ticket I got has no seat number, no carriage number, no class of service, etc. All of that info needs to be clearly on the ticket and it’s not. I had to dig through my e-mail to find that info..Version: 280

Refund errorMy last experience with this app very bad trying to request refund for the booking journey I have not used due emergency circumstances and the app refused to do it and the error came phone the train line failed to refund your money back I phone the train line about 30 minutes waiting on the line then one of the worst costumer service answered my call in very rude manners and started question me why I did not make the journey and he said there is bug in the app stopped me from requesting the refund and he said is going to race the transaction to the refund department who’s will look into it and back to me in 2 working days and I might be charged up 10 £ I said what charges me 10 £ to claim 4.50 £ are u crazy plus he was not professional at all this guy on the phone i talk and he keeps talking on the top of me never let me speak the worst customer service ever be carful using their service and then I asked him to delete my account and he said wait on the line and just disconnected the call ..Version: 237

Stops tracking before train stopsI use the Trainline to track my husband's progress when he travels from Yorkshire to Norfolk. He often runs late (thank you East Midlands Railway) and Trainline is great for seeing how late he's going to be until ... the timetabled arrival time arrives, then the tracking stops and app says the train has arrived. For example, last night the train was nearly an hour late. It was tracked with expected arrival time at Norwich until Ely, at which point it stopped tracking because the timetabled arrival time passed. If there were further delays during the remaining hour's journey, I would have had no idea. Please set the app so that it tracks the train until it actually arrives rather than when it's supposed to arrive..Version: 205

Awful Customer Service and They Removed Free Exchange Policy without NotificationTrainline used to have a fee free exchange policy for advanced tickets but they secretly removed it in September without any notification on their website or on the app. I usually buy more tickets than I need for flexibility, and then change them the day before traveling if I don’t feel like commuting the next day. I found out this month that they are charging £15 per round trip for exchange and now I am forced to go into the office to utilize my tickets. Total lost is around £200. You can’t even find their customer service email on their website and I had to find it via google. The team is obviously based offshore as all their emails were sent at 3am. They don’t have a complaint procedure and no matter what you say, their response is always a polite fxxx off. The only reason I used this app and paid booking fee is because they provide free exchange, now that the policy is gone and I’ve had such a bad experience dealing with them, I will not use them again. I am sure there are some other apps that don’t charge booking fee and have lower exchange cost. TrainPal is a good alternative for now. I’ve told everyone around me about this and everyone who was using Trainline are switching to other apps like TrainPal..Version: 294

Purchase tickets through webThe app glitches with ticket upload and booking date. I purchased the wrong date thanks to this and their customer services refuses to take responsibility even if you’ve spent heaps!.Version: 281.1

Avoid - it’s just terribleI am beyond furious with the Trainline app. I have never encountered such a terrible and unreliable app in my life. I was trying to buy train tickets for an important trip, and the app kept crashing. It was so slow, and it was impossible to navigate. I was on the phone with their customer service for an hour, and they were no help. They kept blaming my phone and internet connection, but I have a brand new phone and a great connection. I ended up missing the train I wanted to take because of this app and had to pay extra for a different one. To top it off, I was charged twice for the same tickets, and customer service was no help with that either. I spent hours on the phone trying to get my money back. I will never use this app again, and I advise anyone else to stay far away from it. It's a complete waste of time and money. Zero stars..Version: 258

Be aware about this app. Can let you with out your tickets in the middle of your tripIf you the app be careful. I bought my train tickets and in the worse moment in the middle of the trip block my user name. The result: lost of my tickets. Try to get in contact and no answer. So again be careful..Version: 312

Experiencing issues with app and websiteI’m not too sure if it a local issue or the version of the app I have, but I am unable to log into the app and the website is also not working (which I assume is temporary). I also just tried to book train tickets and got a confirmation that the booking had failed and that my money would be refunded. However, unsurprisingly, like many companies the Trainline seem to be absolutely fine with taking my money (£130) instantly for a payment (even though the service failed) and don’t see any issue with making me wait 5 working days for a refund. Im sure most people are totally fine with being £130 or more short for 5 days. I also don’t see any good in not having the direct capability to change the email address associated with my account like I’m able to with a lot of other user accounts for other websites / online services. The process of changing this via customer services seem archaic and inefficient..Version: 201

What is the point of the app?I cannot link my railcard to my account. There is no option (at least no visible one) to link an existing railcard. It keeps suggesting that I buy a new one. When buying the tickets, since the card is not linked it prompts me to verify said card at the ticket booth defeating the whole point of having an app. Why is navigating this app so frustrating if the end result remains to see a ticket booth..Version: 264

Mostly easy to use but Not clear enoughWhile the app works smoothly most of the time, it doesn’t give enough information on train ticket validity and the FAQs are sparse in providing these answers. only after having to repay for a ticket was I explained to by a ticket collector the times for off peak and super off peak, the weekday to weekend difference and how to change tickets in the station. None of this Information is easy to find or clear on the app itself when booking the ticket. even with an open return, the varying and unclear nature of peak, off peak and super off peak is different from service to service and day to day meaning that it’s easy to be caught out with a ticket that is no longer valid..Version: 117

Gives you random dates not from the dayI booked a ticket thinking it was giving me the dates of today and ended up buying a ticket for in 2 days. The refund you get is minimal against the charging fee. The app should allow you to just switch the day easily if there are confusions like this or make you put the date you want to travel first..Version: 207

Money theftDo not use this Api to book travel. Both times I used it did not secure tickets but took my money. did not arrive and then I had to wait for refund. Buy tickets at stations..Version: 119

What have you done to the app?! 🤯I love love love adore adore and obsessively use this Train Line app. Last few weeks the app is very clunky. It is very very slow in opening up, in processing searches for tickets and finding tickets. Instead of seemingly instantaneous like usual it takes 5-10 seconds! Making me think each time it has frozen!! Today after update the app gave me a black screen, on shut down and reopen it gives me BLANK blue heading and green box screen 🙈🤯☠️ And it's NOT giving ME ANY INFO 😡 I've screenshot it if you don't believe me. I've never seen the app done this since I've used it for nearly 6 years now. Only change I did was UPDATE the app just now before I write this review!! Thought you should know the new update done on 4 Nov 2019 gives blank screen of blank blue and green boxes when open app after update ☠️.Version: 110

Beware: Cancellation Technically ImpossibleThe promise made in the app is that you have several hours to cancel for a refund after booking. However, cancellation is technically impossible while the ticket is in a status of ‘creating’, which mine was for several hours after my purchase. I needed to cancel and I was unable to do so before the cancellation window expired. I tried to reach out directly for support but there was no chat or call option easily available. If you are going to use buggy software with your business you need a reachable support team. Very disappointed..Version: 239

App cost me lots of money. They never acknowledged to the issue. When I purchased a train ticket, the number on the ticket provide by the app did not match the actual train number that I was to take. Therefore I missed the train. Because it was the last train of the night I had to stay overnight in a hotel. The cost of a taxi to/from the station, hotel and new ticket was significant. I emailed the company yet never received a response. In conclusion, this app is not accurate. It’s not reliable. It’s not responsive and could end up costing you a lot of money..Version: 244

Give live tracking functionality backSince the recent update the most useful functionality of the app has been either hidden or gone completely and it causes a real pain when you need to take a train with few changes. Having only 10 minutes to change and no information on the app to which platform should you rush to is the most stressful thing ever, especially when your change is in York and there are at least 2 or 3 trains setting off to Leeds at similar time. Which one did I buy the ticket for? It’s a real nightmare to find that out on time and I am terrified to even think what if I travelled somewhere completely new and didn’t know the station at all. There is no information to be found on which train time is the planned one for your change. Absolute chaos and it makes me want to ditch trains whatsoever..Version: 311

Terrible AppPrice changed when making booking. Ended up paying an extra £26. Find alternative travel arrangements if possible.Version: 29

Appropriately useless for Uk travelIt’s very difficult to get a refund from the trainline and if you do they take loads of charges off you prior which makes it feel not worthwhile, which I imagine is the purpose. Given the pathetic state of trains in the UK this means loosing a lot of money. Have lost tickets to app glitches and been stranded. Also frustrated with the upselling, adding 1st class to your journey without asking and then those trains not even having first class on board. As useless as the train system and frankly a scam. Every so often I forget and in a rush or panic order a ticket for what feels like ease but it just makes more sense to pay more in the station. As national rail app is terrible this app can be helpful for seeing times of trains..Version: 217

Apple Pay problemsIt asks me to set up Apple Pay when I already have a working credit card installed..Version: 28.0.1

Can't call a taxi number :-(Fail.Version: 2.1.4

Take my money & run!!!Unbelievable! App allows me to book train tickets Munich-Zurich, yet all train services have been suspended for 3 days in Germany. DB has offered flexibility of travel & refund… but NOT this app. Ha! I will delete App immediately… Long distance to travel from Australia to be RIPPED OFF in this way!!.Version: 301

So useful and shockingly awful at the same timeHi Trainline, on the days your app works I’d say it’s the best on the market, but over the last year (with updates) I’d say it’s failed more often than not. I’ve not been able to search or buy tickets because “oops, somethings gone wrong on our end” or I’ve not been able to open a bought ticket because “ oops, somethings gone wrong on our end” or I’ve not even been able to open the help section because .. well in this case nothing happens. Irritatingly you come to rely on an app like Trainline to emergency purchase tickets because it’s quicker and better than going to a booth or buying via the website but that means when it fails it’s the most frustrating thing ever. As a fellow Product Manager - please introduce reliability into your Production application. It needs to work every time for the most basic of tasks - like buying a ticket. Thank you very much..Version: 242

Serious Problem with changes of trainsI have used this app for a long time and was my most favourite app in travels- unfortunately recent changes have some serious flows-particularly for off peak return tickets - if you have a connecting trains and your ticket was checked at first train it is marked as used on the app and when you go to next train connecting train the conductor doesn’t accept the ticket as it says it was used - this is particularly problem if for off peak return and your train is different than the one printed on the ticket, please look into that, I experienced it on my journey to London- I bought the off peak return ticket- hot on my connecting local train - which is half an hour- the ticket was checked and marked as used- than I took my main train to London- the conductor didn’t accept the ticket saying it was used- I had to buy a new ticket- similar problem happened on the way back as well- I hope this is a glitch in the software and you can sorted it soon- it is a shame to ruin such a lovely app with this nonsense, thank you.Version: 243

Can’t check past tickets. The app was wonderful until you could no longer check tickets purchased over the website or in the past..Version: 112

ScammersDo not ever buy a ticket through these guys they will scam you they have four if even know customer service whatsoever and if you do by then you’re going to get stuck with their scamm and nobody will be there to help to help you i got scamm for 53 euro.Version: 203

Timeout connectionGreat features; shame the connectivity is usually flawed..Version: 2.0.6.1

Useless - charging money for nothing!Rubbish app doesn’t have the correct up to date information so selling tickets for services that aren’t running! Then they mug you off and say its not their problem and you’ll have to chase the rail company for a refund. Trainline charges money for its ticket selling service. Of course it had a responsibility to ensure the tickets it is selling are valid. If it is selling people tickets they can’t use, it shouldn’t be in business. Yeah - developer response - planned engineering works are planned months in advance and the train operators make this info public - it isn’t a secret! Trainline is provided with the information, just doesn’t ensure the information is available to customers. Why tell people the service isn’t running when you can sell them a ticket, charge a service fee on top, and then tell them its not your problem they need to chase the train operator. Clearly Trainline doesn’t understand consumer contract law as well as train time tables - should really get put out of business :-/.Version: 299

App not user friendlyI tried looking for trains in Greece but the app kept saying “not available” there should be a list of countries before it’s downloaded..Version: 282

Don’t trust them!!!I used this company to purchase tickets from Italy to go to Germany and to return. the Italian train was canceled and this company said you can’t get a refund from us because the trains you had to reschedule in Germany had nothing to do with the trains that I purchased in Italy. so if you have to reschedule tickets because of one company but they’re booking everything separately for you, you will be screwed. and then they refuse to even give you a refund for their service fees, it’s ridiculous. It says you can easily reschedule and Manage the tickets to their app but you cannot. when you go to click on manage or reschedule it says that you have to call their customer service, the number doesn’t work, or you have to email them. by that point your travel plans have already been disrupted you will be forced to purchase additional tickets and you won’t be able to wait for their customer service team to respond to reschedule your tickets. This is just ridiculous. Do not ever use this app and I will never be using this app again I’m gonna use it to find out where the tickets and the trains are but I will never purchase through them again..Version: 285

It wouldn’t book trainsNo matter where I was going it wouldn’t book the trains. Always gave a generic error message..Version: 53

Watch out for overbooking or selling off peak 1st class without seat reservationMostly, the Trainline is ok. But for that one time that they mess up, I have to give a 1 star rating. Just had a chat with the train guard who listed multiple problems he encountered with Trainline customers. Don’t buy an off peak 1st class without confirmation of seat reservation. Trainline state that “seat reservations are subject to availability “ but selling 1st class tickets without guarantee of a seat is in my opinion, a rip off. I won’t use them again due to this bad experience of having to stand up from Berwick upon tween to London kings cross. I’ll book direct. The customer chat line tried to say it’s LNERs problem, while LNER say it’s the Trainlines, as they are my service provider. Trainline should never sell any 1st class tickets without confirmation of a seat, off peak or otherwise. And I think that their “subject to availability “ clause is an excuse to get out of careless over selling of seats..Version: 230

MrBook your tickets from the train line company itself don’t use Trainline I’ve been using Trainline for 5 years without any issues they have a summary of my bookings which exceed 150+ or 200+ bookings I booked a train for my parents and were humiliated in front of everyone because other people had the same seat and we were forced to leave the seats my issue isn’t with standing which I don’t mind but I had two sick parents with me who were forced to stand when confronting Trainline and asking them for a refund they reply by it’s not there issue they booked me seats for one stop and then for the rest hour and a half of the train it was fully booked and they still booked us the train. At least have the decency to apologise they just told me they can’t do anything about it nothing else we had to deal with it..Version: 280

Defective appWhile booking sncf tgv ticket in france i asked for solo seat on empty train but app books me an unwanted seat face to face with another passenger. Cancelled my booking..Version: 119

Never buy a train ticket from this appBought a OUIGO train ticket from Paris to Marseille. We arrived on time and expected to have a seat. We went looking for our seat and there’s no Carriage 18 on this train. It looks like we got the correct train to Marseille which left the station at the exact time we were supposed to be leaving. The train only has 10 carriages and yet our ticket says Carriage 18. There’s a carriage 8 with our seat number but he showed us a ticket for theirs. So we are now stuck here on this train to Marseille for 3+ hours without a seat at this super hot carriage. Never again!!.Version: 280

Awful app and customer serviceNo way of cancelling mistaken tickets if the ticket is marked as non refundable which goes against consumer law, there should at least be a short cooling off period especially when mistakes happen with technology so easily. Tried to get a refund after talking to an agent which they accepted but it turns out I later scanned the mistaken ticket by accident (because I had another identical ticket in my tickets) so they only gave me £15 out of £61. If I’ve asked to cancel and refund a ticket it shouldn’t even be visible in my app nor scannable, yet they use a 24 hour processing excuse. Now because of a simple mistake I’ve lost a massive £45 on a ticket I didn’t need alongside cost of living increases. Trainline takes no responsibility for their unlawful non refundable ticket policy nor their terrible app that takes so long to process cancellations and gives you the chance to accidentally use a ticket which rejects any refund you could have gotten that they promised to give. Useless customer service as they just blame it on their system despite promising a refund that they can’t follow through on and refusing to take any responsibility for their flawed app and policies. Never using this app again..Version: 229

UnacceptableProcessed the payment and then notified me that the app was unable to confirm the ticket and a refund would be processed in 5 days. Taking money prior to confirmation of the booking is bad enough but a 5 day delay in returning my money is not acceptable. Do not use this app..Version: 277

Terrible customer serviceI contacted support after I bought 4 of the wrong tickets asking for a refund which they refused because the tickets had been scanned but by a guard I never went through the gates but apparently they couldn’t do it but I said that I had t used it and they still refused and they said they needed confirmation from southwestern railways so I contacted them and they said they’d call Trainline who did t pick up so they sent an email I then contacted Trainline again who denied receiving the email so I called swr and they said Trainline had even sent them a confirmation email saying they had received it and told me the even specified that my tickets should be refunded no matter what so I went back to Trainline who denied it again and kept saying my ticket had been scanned so I called swr again and they looked at the email and then Trainline finally responded to them agreeing to refund my tickets. I have never struggled with a support service this much especially considering I was fully in the right to receive a refund on these tickets I hope nobody else has to deal with them in the future as they are extremely uncooperative and helpful always asking the same questions and not listening to what you say.Version: 270

Money gauging appThis app can be really convenient at times but in the 2-3 months we’ve used it, there have been multiple occasions of the app suddenly refusing a ticket as “sold out” only to up the price for the exact same trip. We once went from tickets costing €89 to €129 in less than 5 min. We’re now getting payment issues to get to Dublin, but if we only go to Holyhead the ticket is over €50 more! Also two tickets frequently cost €10-20 more together than buying two single tickets. Just annoying to be gauged for money but still using as it is often more convenient for the international or long distance trains despite the extra charge..Version: 253

Actual Fraud Problem: beware!!! FRAUDI downloaded this app and tried to buy a ticket but once I had entered my credit card information I was oddly invited to join a movie service. This I declined, but then was contacted by my credit card company about a fraudulent transaction. I had just been charged 5 pounds by the movie service!!! I was unable to buy the train ticket. This is a shocking experience that they need to fix asap!.Version: 302

Used to be a lifesaver- now sluggish and laggyI used to use this app for my daily commute and had no issues with it. It was great for quickly checking prices and train times. Now it is a hot mess that only works 1/5 times. When I do open the app without it immediately crashing it takes 39 seconds to load properly and then another minute of no buttons working when i’m trying to enter my destinations. Oh and then if it didn’t crash at first it does then. I used to be able to open my app in under 10 seconds and show my ticket with ease but now it takes about 3 minutes and lots of impatient train inspectors having to walk away and come back to me because this app made to help people with their journeys only seems to make them worse! Until they fix the bugs and the lag they’ve lost a customer- for one of the most used apps you’d think they’d have a decent development team??? clearly i set my expectations too high..Version: 290

Pointless appThis is a pointless and unnecessary app designed for the company and not for the customer. Did not work on hates when I first activated my ticket..Version: 19

Works but…It works for basic operations and easy to use but the canceling and refund is sometimes misleading, it shows you can cancel your ticket and get refund but if the ticket policy is not supporting any refund still shows you can get refund ! But when you cancel you will get 0 refund ! Very funny process so if you made a mistake and cancel your ticket will be lost and with 0 refund very funny and dodgy process..Version: 225

The favourites section is awfulThe only thing it saves is the route and time (although there’s a problem with selecting a favourite time, as I want to save a train that’s at 7 o’clock in the morning and it’s 1 o’clock in the afternoon now, and it’s showing me train times up to 10 at night and not the previous train times before 1 o’clock either, so I’ll have to wait until later). It also doesn’t save if you want a return or not which makes it completely useless for me as I only want to buy returns. The favourites tab also doesn’t allow you to search in the tab itself, you have to search for the service you want on the main section and then it appears in the favourites menu. This section is completely useless to me and probably for a lot of other people..Version: 148

Buyer BewareIf you’re not an EU or UK citizen *don’t* use this app. I spent thousands on it in Europe, including $600 tickets for a Thalys train that was cancelled. When you click through the refund on the app, it says you must contact customer service. So I did; Trainline says they’ll talk to Thalys. Thalys says you must apply for the refund through Trainline because that’s where the tickets were purchased; Trainline then sent me an email that Thalys rejected the refund - even though I have screenshots and communications from Thalys telling me I was entitled to it. Making matters worse, Trainline refused to provide any documentation, explanation why it was rejected, communications with Thalys, nothing. All for a refund that Thalys own materials say we’re entitled to. I had to pay hundreds more to complete my trip. I’m now having to spend hours figuring out how to apply for Thalys mediator and bring a claim in the EU, and all because Trainline refuses to provide any information. This would be consumer fraud under US law; but because it’s a British app, you can pay hundreds and receive nothing. Bottom line: buy your train tickets direct from the provider or face the risk of complete loss..Version: 238.1

Great app overall!New review Great app overall, in particular when travelling across borders/different train companies. I‘ve had one negative experience which I have detailed below but the dev team responded promptly and hopefully won’t be reproduced. Previous review: « Do not buy tickets for trains in Italy via the app. Despite the few euros you will pay for the ease of use you will lose some key functionalities as the booking is done via the trainline email address. This means that these tickets cannot be modified or cancelled directly on the trenitalia website. So it is better to directly buy the tickets (cheaper and more cancellation option) on the trenitalia website directly. As Trainline s only advice if you wish to exchange is to not use the online method but to try to explain yourself at the train station. A risky option... ».Version: 151

Better to buy the tickets at the stationUsed on a trip thru Europe. Useful for searching the train schedules. Buying tickets thru them is a bad idea. App sometimes changes the stations you are searching (for no apparent reason). Once you purchase, you are out of luck- nice gentlemen at customer service empathized with me because ‘no one likes to lose their money’ but the ticket policies are up to the train and Trainline can do nothing even if the tickets were purchased a few seconds ago. At least the app could prompt ‘you are buying tickets to leave in one hour from a station 1000 km from your current location. Are you sure?’ Wrote off those tickets and bought at the station- cheaper base fare, no ‘service’ fee, and the machine defaulted to start the trip at the station where I was. Don’t see any reason to pay extra to buy via the app.Version: 281

Convoluted routes and expensive ticketsCheck out the national rail app and see how much cheaper and more straightforward your travel can be..Version: 56

Terrible processThe app appears to have a sleek user experience until you need additional support. Tickets take hours to generate. The window of making changes would have passed after the tickets were generated. No contact info anywhere in App. Found chat through website. After going back and forth for 20mins they can’t do anything about seat assignments. Then asked me to contact train station. Doesn’t know contact info for train station either citing they are just a retailer. What’s the point of this App? Maybe good for browsing..Version: 227

Old app had better functionalityWhere has the Australian dollar option gone? Where has the calendar ics ability gone? There is no invoice receipt option either. Trip history did not carry over. Old app was excellent!!.Version: 74

Apple Watch app not workingThe Apple Watch app is not currently working. I have a business and personal account for tickets, when I’m logged into one account with no bookings on it, the Apple Watch app shows as “no upcoming trips” which is correct. But when logging into an account where I have purchased tickets, the Apple Watch app opens with a blank black screen, then closes immediately. I initially thought this was due to the app not working with one of the accounts, I contacted Trainline through the chat function and had all of my tickets and railcard transferred to the other account that the Apple Watch app was working with, which before was showing as “no upcoming trips”, but now this account opens with a blank black screen on the watch and closes immediately. It looks as though whatever account has trips/tickets associated with it, will not open or work on the Watch app. This is very disappointing but I hope it’s fixed soon..Version: 269

Buggy and unreliableUsed this app for my trip to Austria. 1. It doesn’t give you all the possible routes. I found faster and better routes by manually playing with the different stations. 2. When looking to by a ticket routes kept disappearing 3. When trying to buy a ticket for my son I kept getting a generic error and was about to be late for the train. 4. Booked a ride which turned out to switch to a bus and that had no indication in the app. Would recommend using the trains app which is much better..Version: 269.1

Refuses all paymentsI purchased one set of tickets and went to book for a second trip. No matter which card I use (all with ample funding), the app and the website both refuse payment saying there has been an error. Incredibly frustrating when trying to book a trip..Version: 206

Easy to book, impossible to cancelThe app works very well for booking train travel, but I attempted to cancel to pre-booked train tickets that were “refundable”, the app malfunctioned in both cases and would not allow me to cancel travel. It referred me to a bad number for customer service, leaving me only email. Since email is only checked every 24 hours, they didn’t honor the requested cancellation. The Trainline contact information does not appear on the website, and the referral number provided by the app was incorrect. As a result, I did not get my refund. when I eventually reached the call center after endless emails, they were of absolutely no help. If I could give zero stars, I would..Version: 279

Very bad applicationI used the app for the first time to book a train ticket from Mulhouse in France to Munich in Germany but it was a complete disappointment . The full ticket price was extracted (taken) from my credit card but I received an instant message that the booking was unsuccessful and a refund will be issued! so far I haven’t received any refund and I am not sure who to contact to get this refund sorted out. Definitely there is an issue with the app and/or the processes of this company..Version: 237

Online travel agency during Covid-19If you want no help and lose your money, use this app. Its convenient when buying your tickets, its a pain when asking for a refund. I live in the USA, and bought train tickets for our trip in Spain. When our trip was cancelled by Renfe(Spanish train operator), I initiated a refund process with Trainline. Trainline responded that I should call Renfe( its a long distance call for me$$$), to get a refund. I was able to finally got hold of a Renfe call-agent after several days of attempting to get in touch with a Renfe agent($$$), and was told that, I should get hold of my travel agent because all tickets during our travel date was cancelled and was refunded back to our pay-source irrespective of ticket type. So, when I communicated again with trainline. Guess what, I was again advised to call Renfe!!#%#%%*+*\\|*%%#%^*$$$@@:;;(##%%%* My 2 cents, cut out the middleman and go directly to the service provider. The service provider all have online footprints now. So when travel plans go awry, you only have to deal directly with the provider. DO NOT USE THIS APP!!!!.Version: 127

Pandemic - Money making leechIts really disappointing that this companies are actually leeching money off ppl due to the pandemic. I bought an advance return ticket to see my family unfortunately due to the recent corona restriction i was not able to travel at all. I wanted to get a refund however i was told that one of my ticket is none refundable and due to the huge admin charge i was getting refund like 15% of what i had actually paid. I was also suggested that i should change my date instead 😂😂 is this a JOKE how would i know when thing will settle down . I did try to change my ticket but i was not able to do it since one of my ticket was none refundable🤦🏻‍♀️. Previously i was refunded a full amount even tho both my return tickets were non refundable due to the previous restrictions. Whats really funny is that couple of times before the pandemic i had made a mistake to some of my ticket purchases cuz the app is really unreliable i wanted to get a refund and of course i dont want to pay the huge admin fee. I contact them, My tickets were none refundable and i was issued a full refund with out the admin charge. 😂😂 Plus the customer service chat in train line is getting worst all they do is copy and paste the same thing again and again. Talking to them is waste of your time and waste of your phone min..Version: 156

You Will Lose Money if You Use This AppIf you use this app to buy an open return, and let’s say, you accidentally buy a day return you’ve just lost money. The train workers will not help you because you used a third party app to buy the ticket. Bare in mind, if you bought the wrong tickets using machine however, they will be more than happy to help, and you can easily change your tickets. Another feature of this app that makes you lose money, is if you filter tickets to open returns only, this app will STILL always advertise you prices for day returns. What is the purpose of this? To lure you into buying the wrong ticket I reckon. It will sneakily display the open returns (THE TICKET YOU ACTUALLY WANT) underneath. Hello trainline, I don’t want day returns I want open ones, that’s why I used the bloody filter. This app is hilarious, you request a refund and they expect you to put your tickets into an envelope, seal it shut, go to a post office, send them to Edinburg, THEN wait 5 days for 70% of your money back. I’m sorry what century are we in? The 1800s? This long winded refund method is a sneaky technique to deter people from getting refunds. I think it will be easier for me to just delete this app, never use it again, and buy my tickets from a machine or the official south west train app. Thanks for making me waste money😊.Version: 222

Honest review of TrainlineThis app is very easy and intuitive… until you actually have to use it. Do not use this app— especially if you are traveling in a foreign country!!! It will screw you sideways and make you think it’s your fault, or that you are crazy. I absolutely never write reviews for anything, but I want to save someone else the trouble. DO NOT USE TRAINLINE TO TRAVEL!!!!.Version: 303

Bike reservation system brokenTLDR: Don’t book bike reservations through Trainline I booked tickets with bike reservations on trainline for an Avanti West route. When I went to redeem the bike reservation ticket before my train, Avanti West had no record of my bike reservation. I ended up missing my train and getting put on a later train (thanks to the help of the train staff). I called Trainline support about this issue after the fact to hopefully avoid this for my return trip. The rep said that my bike reservation was in fact booked and that I wouldn’t need to worry. Three days later, the same thing happens again and I get put on a train two hours later. This seems to be known problem — the Avanti agent claimed it happens over 30 times a week and has been this way for a while! Given that this part of Trainline is clearly broken and incorrectly reserving bike spaces, Trainline should remove bike reservation functionality to avoid headaches like mine or contact Avanti and other train lines to resolve this issue..Version: 274

Better off somewhere elseSure booking your trip is easy, but the app shows the train number and not the line number or platform when looking at your journey. On top of that, I purchased what I believed to be first class tickets for my departing and return trip, because I selected first class. When I boarded the train I was informed that I had second class tickets and had to pay €106 to “upgrade” my ticket, which I had wanted to be first class anyways. I recommend the DB navigator app in Germany as it has more information and clear platform and train information. Do NOT book with this app, honestly even the terminal at the station will be better..Version: 223

Worked only onceThis app worked the first time used it but now I cannot log in or change my password. All that appears is a blank screen after brief flicker. If I try to create a new account, it says that my email already exists. Online chat was of no help..Version: 297

Wrong languageAs soon as I downloaded it, it was in a different language. It’s in French and because it’s in French and I don’t read French i can’t figure out how to change it?.Version: 76

Great taking your money, not great on refundsGreat service when it works, but when it goes wrong and you need a refund you better be prepared for some pain holding on the phone for an hour and then jumping through hoops to prove that their process didn’t work. You can request a refund online but they take a £10 admin fee even though it wasn’t your fault, so you then need to call and hold for an hour, then email photos of receipts of replacement tickets you had to buy at the station because the Trainline ticket didn’t work. I’ve yet to see if I get a full refund but suffice to say I’ll be adding a new 1* review if I don’t and asking my credit card company to refund the payment. My advice …. use Trainline for info but buy your tickets at the station … save yourself the Trainline fee and the pain when it goes wrong!.Version: 193

Where is my railcard?I’ve used trainline for a few years with no problems but my most recent experience has been a nightmare. I purchased a £70 senior railcard on 1 September for a £160 rail journey on 9 September. I checked up after a few days later booking a short journey which told me I had no railcard only notifying me that my old card had expired. Fine I’ll sort it out with customer services. What a joke. What customer services. This is my only means of lodging a complaint. Nowhere did I find a means of emailing or phoning trainline. Any other method just ended up in circles or wanted me to buy a railcard. I have an email confirmation, the transaction appears in my bank statement and it also appears in my Apple Pay. But none of this is evidence of purchase. So I travel on Friday having to pay the £80 discount back on my ticket and £70 out of pocket for the invisible senior railcard. And I’m buying another railcard from a different company. I will either be complaining to the ombudsman or taking trainline to court as I can’t even get a refund! I’m 76 and can do without this hassle. So Goodbye trainline. You are useless and thieves. I do hope someone t trainline reads this and reaches out to help me. Pensioners can’t afford to throw away £150..Version: 240

Differing prices on appWas living the app until I checked prices on the Trainline website to find for the exact same train journey, prices were at least £30 more expensive to buy through the app rather than on the website.Version: iOS App 17

Quite disappointing; look elsewhere.Tried to book tickets for Europe trip. Unfortunately, an immature app, poor infrastructure, and horrendous customer service resulted in a substantial waste of time and money. “We are just the reseller” is what they say to deflect responsibility; actually their business is just reselling, so they should try to do it well. Not the case..Version: 270

Can’t buy train ticketsThis app simply says “oops something went wrong, please try again later” every single time I try to book a train ticket. It also gives results to stations differing from what was initially searched for. Massive waste of time and energy with the end result being booking at the station the old fashioned way. Complete lack of timely support. What a hassle..Version: 90

Changed info to avoid compensationTrainline sold me a ticket on Boxing Day through EMR. No trains were available on that day since i learned later that WMR never sell tickets on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. I asked for a refund for my ticket and hotel as I had to spend the night before returning home the second day. They refunded me the ticket and not the hotel , and then they changed the dates of the ticket on my app so that it couldn’t show that they sold me a ticket that EMR would never sell on Boxing Day. There is no way to reach them properly and I’ve been chasing this for 3 months now. Trainline have successfully lost a customer who has been with them for years as they did not give me my due right when I deserved it. I even stayed at a cheap hotel. I now book through other apps for free and avoid the charge Trainline imposed on me in return for nothing..Version: 219

Trap for taking money on mistakesThe app saves whatever destination you previously put in for ticket. Accidentally bought a ticket for destination B to A instead of A to B. Used the return ticket on my journey there. Customer service stated I cannot get a journey back to destination B as I have already used the return ticket. Costumer service are uncooperative, cold, loud, rude and started yelling at me through the phone. Their costumer service are located in Indian. Do not expect the greatest level of English speakers to answer your call which is also rated at 2p/min. Forced to pay for another ticket from B to A home even though my first ticket was never used. Download whatever respective train service app their is available as this app doesn’t provide any lower of a price the other ones do..Version: 274

Inconvenient ticket bookingI am highly disappointed by using “Trainline” to book train tickets online. I wanted to book ticket for 6th of January but it keeps the current date despite the fact that future date was selected for couple of times. After booking, the payment deducted and I was not able to amend the ticket. The app says “to amend the ticket you need to book another ticket and the original ticket will be refunded”. So I booked another ticket but was not able to amend the original ticket. I am unable to contact anyone for the refund and now when I am getting closer to the travelling date and time, the app does not show my tickets by displaying messages that “something went wrong please contact the customer service centre”. My first ticket cost me £75 and second ticket cost me £112. After paying these huge amounts still I am stuck in the app to get the ticket. Further, I am not able to contact anyone for assistance or to resolve the issue..Version: 211

Really bad appPlease STOP sending me emails telling me I have a train journey coming up. I know! I put it in my calendar which reminds me. I also know I’m going away naturally. I don’t need emails from Trainline telling me I’m going on a train. Absolutely shocking who thinks that’s a good idea badgering customers!?!? And there’s no way of turning it off! App just hangs on first opening screen when first opened. Crashes to springboard. Then have to open again. Can’t download train tickets to apple wallet. No one at Trainline cares to do anything. You can always judge a company on how they deal with problems and complaints. Can’t add two for one railcard to apple wallet so forces user to use the app instead of apple wallet , apple wallet is way more streamlined and automatically shows passes and travel on the day. Favourites are useless as adding journeys only shows the price etc for one person not two. So totally useless. It saves you money is just about the only saving grace of this app..Version: 276

No Aus SupportSo disappointing. Just the app I needed but no Australian train support :(.Version: 0

Been very useful in the past, but need car park informationI had to cancel my return trip to Cardiff today because commuters had filled up the limited spaces in Lydney. The app could have informed me of the risk of the car park being full up at the time of arrival and informed me of alternative car parks nearby for me to use (as Lydney had failed to expand their car park or build another site), so that my trip would not have been wasted. I received my refund for my last minute cancellation but would have appreciated an earlier heads up so my plans wouldn’t have been scarpered. The app is streamlined useful, fast and very informative on ticket options, but need travel and parking information to go with it!.Version: 258

Will never use this company againBought tickets from the website and was only able to access them via the app, which wouldn’t work when I arrived at the station. There was no other way to access my tickets. I also had to take time to create an account, and then log in to this account via the app to see the tickets I’d paid for. Excruciatingly difficult to simply access tickets. The ticket inspector even tried to help but couldn’t get the app to connect. I ended up being forced to buy 3 more tickets at 4x the price on the day of travel..Version: 60

ChristineI just bought 2 additional tickets for the same journey. my son and his friend missed their connection due to train delay in the Netherlands (on their way to Paris France) I called trainline right away to exchange the tickets for the next available train. I got a voice message saying that due to COVID19 phone calls were not being answered and all question answered online(did not know you could catch COVID19 over the phone). They were stuck in a countryside town, train station was closed and no ways to exchange their tickets for a later train. They bought new tickets and will have to get reimbursement via internet. We will write a review on the process. Otherwise buying ticket is easy!.Version: 139

What a disasterThis has long been mine go-to app for rail travel. Unfortunately, since they have added the ability to purchase a railcard, there is absolutely no way to add an existing railcard to the app..Version: 176

Horrible appThis is actually one of the worst apps I have ever downloaded. So Inconvenient, the website says there’s buttons you can press on the app that don’t exist, Can’t change my advance single train time. It requires me to have a transaction ID ready before contacting them, which can only be found on the expense receipt, FORCING you to close down that window on your phone to go open the expense receipt only to realise you can’t even copy that 12-digit number and so you must memorize it (obviously) until you open up the page again and put it in. When asking for a refund they will also burden for every transaction detail and personal info you can imagine before conveniently telling you “sorry we only manage bookings, for refunds please contact the train company which you took e.g. GWR or whatever”. In short, this app is horrible..Version: 233

Slick interface, horrible payment experienceVery easy to navigate and plan. Actually getting payment to work is impossible. Tried 4 different ways. Gave up. Take care of your customers or someone else will. ✌️.Version: 255

Wrong departing location provided!!The search results sometimes include a train station that would be the next closest to the searched location without clarifying that it is not the searched location until you manually check in the details or catch it while purchasing the ticket. This caused us to pay for train tickets from a station that was an hour away from the train station next to our hotel in Rome. We had to buy new tickets and the previous ones were not refundable. VERY ANNOYING... I will try another app to avoid this potential mishap going forward..Version: 228

App issues - zero supportThe app was all well and good - until it wasn’t! Despite updates, the tickets I purchase now load perhaps only 50% of the time. Not realising this for some time, I had purchased tickets only to find nothing in the app - assuming it hadn’t gone through, I’d hurriedly order more at the station. Only to discover much later on my bank statement that I’d been charged every time and so had been paying double on multiple occasions. I’m now having to screenshot tickets from my emails (?!) in order to use them a lot of the time which defeats the point of having the app. Further, upon emailing customer service I have had zero response and no mention of a refund for the multiple failed ticket purchases so I am massively out of pocket. So frustrating and really poor customer service. When will I hear back from you?.Version: 311

Great app, until there’s a problemIve booked multiple tickets through the app and loved the ease of use. The problem Ive come across is trying to take kids into Belgium from France. The app gives an error message whenever I try to book my kids tickets. I’m sure it is a country related issue where kids might not need tickets to be on the train/bus or something like that. The problem is there is no clear guidance on how to proceed within the app. I’ve contacted customer service. They are good to respond within a day, but through email only and once you reply, it takes another day for a response and as of yet, after three separate communications over a week, I still have no solutions on how to proceed. Even a chat line with a customer service agent would be fantastic but the current form of email only, 24 hr window for response is ponderous at best..Version: 219

Payment Not Accepted & ZERO Help from Customer ServiceAfter working to purchase train tickets twice, the app suddenly stopped working. It says “oops” every time I try to submit payment - I’ve tried multiple different credit cards, Apple Pay and PayPal and none work. Yet I’ve used those cards in numerous other places with no issue and spoke to the card company and there is no block on my card. I reached out to their support two days ago and the customer service rep sent a generic form of info to fill out, then said he didn’t know what was wrong and was sending it up the chain. ZERO follow up since then. He also said them to purchase over the phone instead. No thanks, I have no interest in giving this company my business. Will purchase at the train station, directly from the train company instead. Avoid this app, it’ll just waste your time and frustrate you. A quick google search shows I’m not the only one with this issue either. Some from years ago yet the company still doesn’t seem to have a solution to their problem!.Version: 113

Great until No SupportBuy your tickets direct. Trainline doesn’t live up to its ticket sale contract. Says you can exchange tickets, but app won’t allow it and referee to contact website which asks for your email which tells your to wait. How are you supposed to exchange within an hour when the technology and company won’t allow you to..Version: 225

They sell you tickets you can’t useI bought a few tickets… ok. My settings always the same: adult/child and open return. I bought tickets to Bath — but unbeknownst to me, Trainline ignored “open return” and took money for utterly useless “day return” tickets. My daughter and I arrived in Bath at 4pm… stayed two days, and then when we tried to get the train home discovered what we had been sold: useless expensive tickets. Nearly an hour on the phone. They care nothing for customers. Then the inevitable: I had to buy new expensive single tickets home. Not a £60 trip, £100+. Its like saying I’d like to buy a cake, they give you and bag that you take home, but its bread. They sell what they have, regardless of what you ask for. Trainline have replied. Blaming the customer: with app firmly set to Open Return. Always set to Open Return. Every previous purchase an Open Return. Never expecting anything except Open Return. But sold a Day Return??? To Bath? Arriving at 3pm? What use are those tickets? They cannot be used..Version: 268

Trainline are thievesTrainline are thieves. Multiple times, when I have booked through Trainline, my train has been cancelled and it is impossible to obtain a refund through the app unless you want to only be refunded half the price of the ticket or less, as they take off so much money off in admin fees. Even if you contact them directly to get a full refund, they will not refund the booking fee for cancelled services. While the booking fee is not generally a lot, if you get trains frequently like I do, and considering how often the get cancelled, it will really add up. Even if 1 train gets cancelled per week, you could easily be giving Trainline £30-£50 a year without even travelling. This experience has happened to be too many times now, I will be deleting the app and only booking through Trainpal or the train companies directly..Version: 305
