Birds of Northern Europe for Negative User Reviews

Electronic book slightly disappointingLacks imagination for an app, it is just a scanned in book with the added benefit of some audio. If you already have the actual book and do not mind carrying it whilst bird watching, then do not buy this app. Would be nice to have some additional features such as a bird log (many of the cheaper birding apps have this). On the upside you would find this app useful when out and about and over a period (long) of time will pay for itself. Hopefully the developers will produce some new features and role them out in an update..Version: 1.0.2

Bad updateAm unhappy that information has been omitted such as population figures for different countries and that the navigation has been made more difficult. Looks nicer though and a few bugs have been resolved..Version: 2.0.0

Clunky & primitiveLots of information but difficult to navigate. No easy way to switch between similar bird pictures or songs to compare. No way to annotate birds seen. Range maps and songs require too many clicks to find and are ignored when scrolling through pictures & BWP. Too expensive for such a clunky & primitive app..Version: 1.0.2

Oh dear oh dearDo you ever wish you'd never updated an app ? I certainly do with this effort . Take something that works perfectly and ruin it in one go . Everything is so long winded to get to , and the songs don't loop anymore , also we'res the a-z down the side ? Pointless and perplexing in one easy lesson ..Version: 2.0.0

Good information, low-resolution images, poor interfaceThis application is a mixed bag and my initial enthusiasm quickly turned to disappointment as I started to navigate the application. Having kept it for a while, I would still probably rather have my money back, given the choice. It provides a good level of detail on each bird but it's presented in a fairly basic and non-interactive way and some of the visual content is of very poor quality. It feels like someone simply uploaded a database of bird information into a simple display container, without any real thought regarding presentation and interaction. There is so much useful data locked into the text that could be useful points of interaction. The maps aren't interactive, just simple static low-resolution images that go very blurry when zooming (even the map key is virtually unreadable) and, in fact, all the application contains is a series of low-resolution images, a sound file and a text file with sub-headings for each bird, which you navigate through like a slideshow. I'd like to see a nicely presented overview page for each bird, which provides a summary of key details plus access to the more in-depth information, full-screen images, etc. as required. Even improving the presentation of the text pages, perhaps breaking it up into separate sections would be a big win. It would be nice if the application had real geographic data allowing the guide to highlight likely birds for your location and time of year or to show breeding pairs and related info for a particular country when you click on a map. Additionally a bird's main page could have links to related birds rather than having to back out to the top menu to find the next bird. All in all, it seems like old (low-resolution) content re-purposed without much thought and sold at a high price..Version: 1.0.2

Great value but a few bugs! This app is well presented, easy to use and functional. The content is not the most up-to-date but it is a great value portable resource given the included calls and info. On the downside there are still a few bugs mainly around the resize and orientation of the text and images. It also seems to crash quite often so far with no pattern that I have been able to find..Version: 0

Disapointing new versionAutomatically uploaded new version a great disappointment, will probably delete it, waste of money now, previous version got a five star :( As a post script, this has put me off their other apps..Version: 2.0.0

Crashing on iphone 4s, IOS 7.1.1The new 2.0.0 updated is crashing. After 5 minutes I can only access text, then after another 5 minutes it freezes. Reloaded, and had the same problem. Anyone else having the same problem, or any suggestions?.Version: 2.0.0

Not overly impressedAs a basic guide this is ok but i would have to say the price of £14.99 for poor quality graphics (on ipad) and data which is often out of date is far too high Could be much better.Version: 1.0.2

Great but needs an updateAt the very least for iPhone 5. And some of the photos and videos are less than stella. Still the best but is creaking. It was a 5 star but has aged.Version: 1.0.2

Trading Standards?I love this app, it's always been very good. But where are "the full, detailed text accounts" from BCP, which were there in the previous version and are advertised as being a major feature in this version? The text of each entry cuts off at Distribution, so there is no info on Population, Movements, Food, Social Pattern and Behaviour, Voice, Breeding, Length and Weight or Geographical Variation. Please release an update that lives up to the description of the product, as this falls a long way short..Version: 2.0.0

Robbery!Much of the text from earlier versions has been removed (eg Black Stork is missing all the following sections now: behavior, population, movements, voice and breeding; all species seem to at least bd missing population now!). Nature Guides should offer users to opt for a full refund instead. This is no longer what I purchased!.Version: 2.0.0

RubbishAsked for a refund, but apple said no! The illustrations are poor and the information is limited, was expecting BWP. The Collins bird id app is 100% superior. Just hope they work on it and that it improves in the future, but wont hold my breath..Version: 2.0.0

Low res images spoil itA nice enough app if the images had been up to the job..Version: 1.0.2

Content 5 star; design (affecting usefulness of app) 2 starToo often the bird may well have flown before I've accessed the info I need with this design. Unfortunately the search only seems to work on the bird name, not the grouping. At first I searched on warbler and it brought up several groups, I assumed all. But I noticed no chiffchaff. Search on that, brings up the Phylloscopid warblers - heading, but only the one listed. I tapped on the heading, thinking this would indicate I wanted to see them all - strangely, it said "No results". Enter the chiffchaff pages. The "up" and "down" buttons do nothing - only work on list and I had list of 1. "Concise BWP" - don't know what that stands for but it's a good, thorough account of the species. Mentions other similar - but no quick way of switching to them. It would be good to have a line with links - to others in the family, to those easily confused, quickly back to search. Notes pages would be useful too. This app is not cheap, the info. was already available. Birdguides are an experienced firm. It is a great shame and to their discredit that they neglected to spend more time thinking about the design..Version: 0

For the money little functionalityFor the money to receive a simple scan of a bird encyclopaedia and a few birdsong samples is very poor. Come on guys at least give us the ability to search by colours or beak shape or silhouette. If you know the bird why would you want this app? I feel cheated.Version: 0

AJB63This was going to get an absolute slating, but I've just discovered how to change the language from its ridiculous American default setting (Birds of Northern Europe, for heaven's sake) to English. Go into settings; language; primary language "English" and all is well with the world again. It could do with the return of the alphabetically arranged scroll bar and it does have a tendency to freeze, but at least I don't have to remember how to spell grey, I mean gray and not to introduce searches with 'Eurasian' or 'European'. And I no longer feel the need to demand my money back for an app that no longer represents the birds I expect it to..Version: 2.0.0

Make sure you keep version 1 before you try this!I updated this app - which has been a long term favourite of mine - to Version 2. It is simply horrid on an iPhone. Navigation is unnatural and long-winded, it’s ugly, and it makes such appalling use of the iPhone screen real estate, that finding anything takes an absolute age. It was like having an old friend beaten up and mutilated by thugs. Luckily, I still had Version 1 in the iTunes library on my Mac, so I deleted the new version from the iPhone, and restored the old version. I heartedly recommend to anyone that they keep this escape route open, in case you have the same reaction to Version 2 as I did..Version: 2.0.0

Just awfulThis updated version is even worse than the previous one and that one was dreadful. All of the species sections are open by default making it difficult to scroll down though them. Why is there no preferences to switch this annoying feature off? The new layout feels crammed and very poorly laid out. Why are species such as Glossy Ibis, Rose Coloured Starling, Red Rumped Swallow and Wallcreeper again omitted? This app is invaluable in the field but they have not ironed out the deficiencies of the previous version but compounded them. Any decent app developer could ‘knock this one out of the ballpark’. There is so much potential here but whoever has had the greasy paws on this update has failed utterly. Very disappointing..Version: 2.0.0

Can't clear searchWhen I enter a search to find a particular bird, there is no way of clearing the search field and returning to the full list, or of entering another search value. Please sort this out..Version: 1.0.2

Could have been much better! This will not be replacing the Collins Field Guide anytime soon - or any other guide for that matter! Not the cheapest app and so much missing. Hopefully future upgrades might improve things. A nice facility to add a section for birds seen or a year lost section could easily be incorporated. The Florida guide has this simple but effective facility. Perhaps I expected too much?.Version: 1.0.2
