OutstandingAn entirely successful APP! Very comprehensive, quick and easy to use; all features are great but the calls and songs are especially useful. Worth more than double the price!.Version: 0

Great app but caution with iOS 4.0 upgradesI initially had a problem with the app crashing on an iPhone 3G newly-upgraded to iOS 4.0. However, this appears to be the result of issues with the upgrade rather than the app itself. I found the app was fine after I had restored the iPhone and done a couple of syncs (I also had problems syncing playlists that were previously fine). Bear this in mind if you upgrade to iOS 4.0. Tech support at Birdguides are helpful and fast to respond. From what I have seen so far of this app (and it is big - lots of data), I would say it is even better than the equivalent on the Mac and having it on the iPhone is going to be far more useful when out and about. Definitely worth the price..Version: 0

Excellent upgradeThis is an exceptional upgrade making it MUCH easier to navigate I especially like the search function and especially that it remains on the last section ie calls on each search. Try Warbler as an example. This is now the 'bird guides ' for iPhone and iPad. 10 out of 10.Version: 2.0.0

GreatI have had this about 6 months or so. I have used it quite a lot too. Fab pics and very useful info. other birdwatchers jn the hides have seen me use this and then ask me to look up things for them. People that are moaning about the pics arent you being a tad picky? Isn't this supposed to be a guide to help you out in the field? As long as you can tell the difference between birds does it matter? I think the pics are pretty good and really about the same quality you get in a pocket hand book. You get a lot more info, pics and even calls that you wouldnt get in a handbook because it's just not possible to fit all the info into a small pocket book! The only thing I would negatively say is that you have to search carefully for names of birds as they can be different from what used to. I.e Lapland bunting is called a Lapland longspur. So when searching that name pops up and Its a little confusing. Also a snipe is called a great snipe, and lots of other birds are called 'eurasian' at the beginning of their names which can make it difficult when looking through the a-z of birds..Version: 1.0.2

Comprehensive CoveragePros: Comprehensive. Each entry has many drawings, some photographs, a range map, and several sound recordings. Also shows nests, immatures, and fledglings in many cases. Navigation is easy. Only choice I found for iPad/iPod/iPhone. (Probably why the charge so much! The USA Audubon birds has twice the birds, better navigation, and costs half as much). Cons: Does not enable annotation or establishing your own list. Does not have a facility to show like species. Cost is about double what it should be..Version: 1.0.2

Good Application but not perfectI bought this to replace taking my RSPB field reference book with me each time I go for a walk. As an amateur bird spotter I'm no expert and found the bird groupings not always helpful in finding a specific bird. No problem, just use the the A-Z grouping instead although common names can't be relied on to find what your looking for. I couldn't find Redstart and Curlew under R or C (they're listed as Common Redstart and Eurasian Curlew which is fine if you know the full name in the first place). Ok, you can revert to a search under the name you know and you'll find what your looking for - not quite. I tried looking for Common Gull and couldn't find it anywhere until I checked a reference book for the latin name Larus Canus, typed this in the search mode and discovered it is listed as a Mew Gull (never heard of it). I had to check several reference books before I found the name Mew Gull being used for Common Gull (it's actually the American name). I don't regret buying this albeit you need a bit of knowledge to navigate through it and it certainly won't replace my RSPB field reference book..Version: 0

Birds of Northern EuropeContent excellent, but the pictures are not up to Birdguides usual standards. It seems like the app was developed for I Pod, and when re sized for I Pad, has lost definition. come on Birdguides, let's have an update that shows off the I Pads graphics..Version: 1.0.2

Superb for the birderMy wife bought this - and after watching her use it on our recent trip, I just did the same. It is the only serious app. for the European birder - at least as good as iBird Pro is for North America. And when she couldn't figure out how to do something, and sent an email to the developers, she got a prompt and very helpful personal response. It has all the tools one needs - range maps, recorded calls, excellent descriptions, good illustrations (mixture of drawings and photos) - really makes bird identification a pleasure. Note that although the title implies a limitation to Northern Europe, we found it covered all of the birds we saw further south - of course this was not a systematic check. Cons - nothing worth mentioning. Recommended..Version: 1.0.2

Excellent appGreat pictures, descriptions and distribution maps, looking forward to a future version that includes southern Europe.Version: 2.0.0

Great app - shame about the lack of upgradeI've been using the British Birds app since it came out and found it invaluable in the field. The only problem was that it was missing lots of British rarities. This app fixes that problem, but now my B. Birds app is totally redundant - everything it contains is in here. It would have been nice of Birdguides to offer an upgrade path from B. Birds to N. Europe. Apparently they're planning on doing an in-app upgrade from B. Birds app in the near future, so if you own that one hold back on buying this one. No idea what will happen to us fools who've already got both..Version: 0

ShameThis is a big improvement on the old version which I used a lot anyway. It's a shame the names are American with no acknowledgement of the different names we use in England. We call loons divers, bank swallow is a sand martin and barn swallow is just a swallow. I've always found it annoying that searches can miss out birds in a group, if you put in warbler you won't get Chiffchaff or white throat which are also warblers, same thing with finches. I suppose the comparison feature deals with that. Despite the niggles it is still a great app..Version: 2.0.0

Beautiful app!Gorgeous illustrations, well-organized. I like how it lists all species in taxonomic order, by family. The other review says there aren't descriptions and bird calls, but this is incorrect. The app does include bird calls and descriptions. Just scroll along thumbnails at bottom..Version: 2.0.0

An excellent baseThis is, by far, the best bird reference app available for the iPad. Just a couple of additional features would make it truly indispensable. A key to identification from observed features would improve things considerably, differentiating any number of LBJs is not easy when the only categorisation options are taxonomic or alphabetic. A few more photographs per species would also be useful, the illustrations are very good, particularly the ones with key features labelled but nothing beats an image of the actual bird as it would be seen in the wild. A superb guide that is well translated to the iPad but it could so easily be perfect..Version: 1.0.2

Birds of Northern EuropeExcellent App.Version: 0

ExcellentJust what I wanted.Version: 2.0.0

Another great app from BirdGuidesAll the content from BirdGuide's Birds of Britain and Ireland and with the same layout. The additional species however make all the difference, there aren't many birds you're going to come across in the UK that aren't included here. An invaluable aid for a day's birding!.Version: 0

A good startGood information but a lot of it long out of date Illustrations & photos not bad but could be higher res and photos could show a greater variety of plumages, not just adult male as is the case in many species on this app. A list making function would be good but if you do this please give an option for the entire BOU British List as many of us will have seen rarer visitors that are not included in the app. Also, a 'confusion species' option for beginners would be a good idea as would a facility which allows quick comparison between two specific plumages in different species e.g. if someone wanted to quickly switch back and worth between juvenile Black-necked and Slavonian Grebes rather than having to go back and find the other species every time. The songs and calls are generally gold but as mentioned could include calls of different races included in the text/illustrations. Also, higher pitched birds such as Goldcrest and Firecrest don't come out well - this is not down to the physics of the iPhone because other recordings of these species on my phone come out fine. My main problem with this app is a technical one: one cannot comfortably zoom into and pan around an image without it restricting what you're doing, returning to your previous 'position' on that image or the whole app crashing. One more thing, it can get a bit annoying having Swans and Geese opening every time so open the main list afresh. These are the few issues/suggestions I have for this app. Overall it is very useful and definitely worth the money, I use this app a lot and enjoy it. Oh, one more thing . . . wouldn't it be wizard if you could somehow link your birdnews system to this app. E.g. 'sightings of this bird in Britain' giving species date and county for non-subscribers but full details for those signed up. Don't do a user sightings thing where anyone can add a little post to a public database though, because these things never work and are an awkward waste of time. Best David.Version: 1.0.2

Birds of Northern EuropeOkay, this is not for beginners. What can birdwatchers expect ? Lets take Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava). There are 4 pages showing 44 illustrations of the various subspecies breeding and winter; four photos - all flava; song and call (flava); map. And the text from the 4kg/9lbs £120 Concise BWP! Likewise Bullfinch shows subspecies, but not that important call difference. eagles have adult and juvenile plumage as does (Western) Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus, but you don't get transitional juv to adult Hen Harrier Circus Cyaneus. So not perfect but worth every penny..Version: 1.0.1

Great app, use it all the timeI love having all this information plus bird calls with me all the time. It's good to know you can change the bird names back to their more familiar versions, and I was pleased to find that the latest version supports multitasking properly as well, so that it remembers what you were last looking at when you reopen the app..Version: 1.0.2

Bird names easy to fixTo address the issue raised by ColinWH on the names being a bit odd: that is because you have the language set to "English (International)". If you change it (by clicking on the i symbol in the top right of the screen, then settings, then language) to the one that is just called "English" you will get the British English names of the birds, ie Common Gull, Curlew, Redstart instead of Mew Gull, Eurasian Curlew, Common Redstart. It confused me at first but is easily fixed. I've enjoyed using this so far - not a perfect substitute for a field guide but a useful thing to have on you day to day, and the ability to play back calls in the field is invaluable. It has also already been very useful on birding trips to Germany, as you can change the langage very easily so that you can tell your companions what bird you've just seen in their langauge!.Version: 1.0.2

FantasticThis is an excellent app. Intelligent, informative, easy to use and brilliantly illustrated. Thank you.Version: 1.0.2

Great field tool, now 64 bitAlways liked this app, well worth the initial outlay. I understand this is now optimised for 64 bit, so ready for when iOS drops 32 bit architecture. Possibly a little nippier. Still the best bird field guide around..Version: 2.0.1

Quite goodI had a similar app on a win mobile device and wanted one for the iPhone so after careful consideration decided on this one. As apps go it is quite expensive but I feel it is worth the money for the amount of information it contains. The picture quality is good as are the sounds and the text is comprehensive. It would be nice to be able to keep year/life lists and there are a few birds missing but on the whole I would throughly recommend this app. It will probably never replace the traditional books but to have this amount of information in your pocket at all times is extremely helpful..Version: 1.0.2

What about the MedGreat app but would love to know whether plans to create a sister app for southern Europe are in the pipeline?! Hopefully sooner rather than later!.Version: 1.0.2

GmiesterAs an in the field ID guide this app is fantastic, the bird calls are great for attracting birds nearer to you. Informative, great photos and the drawings are ok. It's great in the field as a first port of call identifier. Great.Version: 1.0.2

Excellent bird guide with audioTruly excellent with a broad range of information. 4 stars for one reason - the audio clips have been badly processed (not a recording issue) during production, with too much output gain applied, destroying both their quality and accuracy..Version: 2.0.4

Simply the bestI have tried all the birding apps for Europe and most are quite lacking in one or more basic facilities. This "book" has calls, song, a number of drawings and photos, good search facilities, maps and lots of written details. I have owned this app for a few years now. It is a fantastic piece of work. Never lets me down. Congratulations are due to the developers. At £15, this is my most expensive app by far but has been worth every penny! Please bring out a Birds of Southern Europe!!!!!!!!.Version: 1.0.2

I don't know what people expectIt's hard to see why everyone doesn't give this five stars. I have at least £1000 pounds worth of bird books at home because there is no perfect guide or one reference that covers all aspects. The BWP is as close as it gets but I can't take that into the field with me. This is as close as you can get and on top of that I can hear calls too; no book can do that. I have to ask those that think this is expensive if they have ever bought a book before. If you are looking at this app you surely already have your bins, scope, goretex everything, etc. What's 15 quid on top of that to get the equivalent of £200 worth of reference books that can't go out of date, plus a box set of bird call CDs, all in a pocket-sized format (smaller than any of my field guides) that you don't have to re-wrap in parcel tape every other trip to stop it disintegrating. This is a bargain! Great update thanks..Version: 2.0.0

Very good apQuite pleased with this ap. Very useful when out and about. You don't always want to carry a bird book, but having this ap is like having your bird book with all the time. Only pity is you can't log sightings..Version: 0
